“Mysteries Beneath the Waves: Wrecks of the Sunset Coast” Commercial transportation on Lake Michigan flourished after the War of 1812, and with the increased traffic came tragedy. Thousands of ships sank and dozens went missing off Michigan’s sunset coast. View equipment used to locate and document these wrecks as well as artifacts that washed ashore or were recovered. Shipwrecks featured in this exhibit include the Ann Arbor No. 5, the Verano, the Hennepin, the Rockaway, and a mystery sloop. Visit the Michigan Maritime Museum website for additional information about a lecture series and other events created for this special exhibition.

“Fatal Crossing”

This companion exhibit explores the only commercial airline accident in Michigan waters and the worst aviation disaster in the country at the time. Northwest Airlines Flight 2501 went down in the waters off South Haven in June 1950. Experience the emotion felt by local residents when evidence of the disaster washed up along the beaches of southwest Michigan. Personal effects found among the debris, never before seen by the public, give face to this local tragedy. The exhibit is based upon the recently released book, “Fatal Crossing: The Mysterious Disappearance of NWA Flight 2501 and the Quest for Answers,” by V.O. van Heest.

Michigan Maritime Museum I

f you’ve ever gazed out over the endless Lake Michigan horizon and wondered what lies beneath its steely blue waters, you won’t want to miss “Mysteries Beneath the Waves: Wrecks of the Sunset Coast,” a new exhibition opening in May at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven. This exhibition features some of the countless shipwrecks that happened on Lake Michigan, dating back to the early 19th century when commercial boat traffic began to increase following the War of 1812. Some ships met their fate due to violent storms, consuming fires, crushing ice and other mishaps, yet the effects of cold fresh water helped to preserve these fascinating underwater time capsules. Learn about the daring rescues by life-saving personnel, and the tragic loss of life and property. Artifacts that washed ashore or were recovered are on display and offer insight into life aboard the ships. A companion exhibit, “Fatal Crossing,” explores the only commercial airline accident in Michigan waters, and the worst aviation disaster in the country at the time, when Northwest Airlines Flight 2501 went down in the waters off South Haven in June 1950. You will see debris and personal effects never before seen by the public that washed up along the beaches of Southwest Michigan. This exhibit is based on the recently released book, “Fatal Crossing: The Mysterious Disappearance of NWA Flight 2501 and the Quest for Answers,” by V.O. van Heest. The Michigan Maritime Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Michigan Great Lakes maritime history and culture, and offers engaging museum displays. The Great Lakes Research Library, also on site, is open by appointment and offers nearly 4,000 books, maps, DVDs, nautical charts, periodicals, and more. The museum also offers classes in building your own wooden boat and exciting on-water experiences, which include the Friends Good Will, a replica square topsail sloop that fought for both the U.S. and Great Britain during the War of 1812. The ship takes regularly scheduled sails on Lake Michigan from late-May through mid-September, with its crew dressed in full 1812-era regalia. You can also take a leisurely cruise up and down the Black River aboard the electric river launch, the Lindy Lou. The launch is a replica of the recreational vessels once found in South Haven in the early 1900s and cruises daily from mid-May through mid-September. The museum’s newest on-water experience features the Bernida, a prize-winning 1921 R-Class yacht, famous for winning her class in the inaugural 1925 Bayview to Mackinac race, and again in 2012! All of the museum’s on-water experiences require reservations. For more information about the museum, its upcoming events, classes, and lectures, or to schedule an on-water experience, visit www.michiganmaritimemuseum.org, or call (800) 747-3810.

Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant and Bakery

C

rane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant and Bakery, nestled among lush, fruit-growing orchards in Fennville, has been a West Michigan tradition for four decades. Over the years, it has grown from serving fresh-pressed cider and slices of apple pie in a orchard barn to offering a full super-sized menu that includes handcrafted soups, sandwiches made with homemade bread, fruit pies (their specialty!), desserts, fruit preserves, and fresh-pressed cider in a warm, antique-filled dining room. New this year on the menu are artisan cookies, which are made using local eggs, butter, flour, and sugar, just like all of Crane’s baked goods. Dine in or take out. An expanded retail room makes it easier to shop for cakes, strudels, and pies to take home – both fresh and frozen – and that includes Crane’s award-winning apple pie. Visit Crane’s Facebook page or its website at www.cranespiepantry.com to sign up for monthly coupon specials, for hours of operation, and to see which fruits are ripe and being harvested. olland, Michigan is a beautiful, modern community charmingly graced by it’s Dutch Heritage. This town comes alive in spring with the annual Tulip Time Festival; full of music, dancing, wooden shoes and exciting colorful parades. The festival is familyfriendly and marks the opening of the summer season for many of Holland’s restaurants and shops. The entrance to extraordinary Windmill Island Gardens is located downtown. A short but very pleasant drive through a natural wetland brings you to the Island, where the feature windmill, DeZwaan, is the center of attention. Over over 250 years old, and taller than a ten story building, the windmill is surrounded by gorgeous gardens full of blooms and serene picnic spots. Within the Holland area, there are wonderful and popular Lake Michigan beaches and parks. Tunnel park, which is named for the entranceway tunneled through a sand dune, is great for picnics, sunbathing, beach volleyball, swimming and dune-climbing. Holland State Park is a must-see with the “Big Red” lighthouse standing sentinel on the north pier. Holland State Park has and outstanding views of the Lake Macatawa channel, where you can walk along the seawalls and and watch a variety of vessels make their way out to Lake Michigan. Kirk Park is just north of Holland, where you’ll find a nice beach and a stunning vista of Lake Michigan. For more information, visit the Holland Area Convention and Visitors Bureau in downtown Holland (78 E. 8th Street), visit them online at www.holland.org, or call 800-506-1299.

Fine & casual dining, coffee, frozen yogurt, sporting goods, home decor, home improvement, and most of all--amazing apparel establishments are found in downtown Holland. Shopping here is an experience meant to be practically savored-strolling the sidewalks, admiring the historic buildings, lingering on convenient benches, hearing the gentle splashing of fountains, gazing upon artistic statues-the environment is a backdrop that sets the mood for the goods and services found here. Walking through the campus of Hope College is beautiful too, where there’s room to take a jog or a nap in the shade. It’s easy to make a day of it in downtown Holland.

Holland Museum F

rom the old country to the new world, Holland Museum presents a diverse collection of art and artifacts that tell the story of this historic west Michigan community. Holland Museum’s permanent exhibits include an extensive collection of Dutch fine and decorative arts spanning 400 years,

and an historic paper collection that highlights the history of both the Netherlands and Holland, Michigan. On display now through May 18 is “Dutch Folklore: The Linocuts of Cornelia VanGeuns Exhibition.” Ms. VanGuens was an artist, musician, and singer who traveled to several West Michigan cities in 1941 to help raise money for Netherlands war relief. This collection of 15 prints represents Dutch songs, stories, and customs. Also on exhibit now through October 4 is “Art and Propaganda in Nazi-Occupied Holland.” This is a traveling exhibit for mature audiences based on three collections from the archives of The Anne Frank Center USA. It includes eight original lithographs by Henri Pieck, drawn by Pieck during his internment at Buchenwald concentration camp; and linoleum and woodcut prints by Marie deZaaijer, which depict the suffering and hardship endured by Holland during the war. Just a few short blocks from the museum are The Cappon and Settlers Houses, which tell the story of Holland’s earliest settlers. The Cappon House is a beautifully restored Italianate Victorian home once occupied by Holland’s first mayor, Isaac Cappon. In it you will find one of the country’s largest collections of early Grand Rapids furniture. The Settlers House is a quaint cottage of a working class family, furnished with locally-used objects from 1845-1880. For more information about the museum, its historic sites, and special exhibitions and events, visit www.hollandmuseum.org, or call (616) 796-3329.

Attractions Windmill Island Gardens This beautiful oasis on the outskirts of downtown Holland is reminiscent of the old-world Netherlands. Windmill Island’s centuries-old working Dutch windmill, “De Zwaan,” is the star attraction, towering over 36 acres of manicured gardens, dikes, canals, and picnic areas. Each spring, more than 150,000 tulips bloom throughout the gardens, while other annual flowers and plants provide an explosion of color all summer long. Enjoy the performances of costumed Dutch dancers in wooden shoes, take a spin on the antique Dutch carousel, or stop by the Posthouse Museum, a replica of a 14th century wayside inn where you can view a presentation about windmills, the Netherlands, and “De Zwaan.” Windmill Island is open April 19 through October 4. Nelis’ Dutch Village “Experience a bit of Old Holland without leaving the States” at Nelis’ Dutch Village theme park. Authentic Dutch architecture, flowering gardens, canals, windmills, and costumed interpreters demonstrate village life in this re-creation of a Dutch village from more than 100 years ago. Watch as costumed klompen dancers sway to Dutch folk music, listen to the music of Amsterdam street organs and the 25-bell carillon, sample Dutch food, visit the wooden shoe factory where you can see shoes carved by hand, and browse the village’s specialty shops filled with foods, gifts, and souvenirs imported from Holland. Kids will enjoy riding the restored antique carousel, sliding down the giant wooden shoe slide, petting and feeding the farm animals, swinging on the Zweefmolen – a giant Dutch swing ride, peddling the new Petal Pumper cars, or taking village goats out for a walk! Nelis’ Dutch Village opens for the season April 20. For more information about Nelis’ Dutch Village, visit www.dutchvillage.com or call (616) 396-1475.

Windmill Ride at Nelis’ Dutch Village Your trip to Holland, is not complete without an exploration of the city’s deep Dutch roots. Be sure to visit Dutch Village where you can ride upon the fins of the new windmill and ferris wheel hybrid ride. This windmill ferris wheel officially known as “Henry’s Windmill Ride” is not only enchanting, but historical! An accurate reproduction of an actual windmill in the Dutch village of Hoogmade, called “de Grosmolen”, Henry’s Windmill Ride is not only historically and artfully accurate, but it’s also pretty cool. Many people have stared up at the towering height of a windmill and wondered what it would be like to ride on the fins, and now you have the opportunity to find out. From Zeel to Zoom! N

othing stands still in Zeeland for very long! The city hosts two very different, yet active events in June that prove it. The City of Zeeland invites running enthusiasts to join the almost 1,000 participants winding their Julie McGraw Photography way through the beautiful streets of Zeeland. Whether you are a die-hard runner, or just an every-day Joe wanting to have some fun, this wonderful 5K race fits the bill. You are able to get an up close and personal look at gorgeous downtown Zeeland, and its surrounding neighborhoods. Participants - and spectators alike - are invited to enjoy entertainment and an award ceremony after the race concludes. The race starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24. If you are ready for some fast-paced excitement, be sure to be in Zeeland on Friday, June 27, from 6-9:30 p.m. The Zeeland Criterium, Michigan’s premier twilight race, is promising to be even better and more exciting than its inaugural debut in 2013. Organizers are keeping the same course and format as in 2013, including primes - prizes for winning specific laps, during the race. If you are not a rider, you can join the fun by sitting along the race course and watching the bikes whip by you, lap after lap. Feel the thrill as the riders fly by you on the way to the finish line. The riders follow a loop from E. Main St., to North Centennial St., to East Cherry, to South Church St., to East Central Avenue, to South Elm St. and back to E. Main St. 152 E. Main Ave. • Zeeland For more information on these two 616-741-9442 events, or to find out how to register, go to Mon-Sat. 10am -8pm www.feelthezeel.com.

Easy answer. Good Food. Comfort Food. Juicy delicious burgers, piping hot fries for example. All served in a friendly-hometown atmosphere. And, the big news is--Franks is expanding. They are taking over the space next door, and soon they’ll be able to serve even more customers. Head to downtown Zeeland to experience a tradition worth keeping around another 100 years. f you are a military or history buff, you simply must visit the USS Silversides Museum. If you’re not, you will be transformed after visiting! With two retired vessels on display, and a special exhibit on Lake Michigan shipwrecks, this museum does a fantastic job to “honor the men & women of the military, preserve military history, and provide experiences that educate the public about past & present military history and technology.” Climb aboard and tour the USS Silverside WWII submarine which was commissioned shortly after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and completed 14 combat war patrols. You will discover the challenges and aspects of a serviceman’s life aboard a naval submarine during WWII. You can also board and explore the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter McLane, and examine unsolved mysteries of shipwrecks and cargo vessels that frequented the Great Lakes. Don’t want the experience to end there? You might be able to book an overnight stay and become an “honorary crew member” of the USS Silversides or join the ROV classes and you can create and control your own Remotely Operated Vehicle underwater. Robots are no longer a thing of the future! For more information call (231) 755-1230 or visit www.silversidesmuseum.org.

Grand Rapids

lobal travel company Lonely Planet knew what it was doing when it named Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan’s Gold Coast the #1 US travel destination for 2014 – because no trip to this area is complete without visiting both the city and the shoreline! Less than an hour away from the coast, Grand Rapids offers big-city art, culture, entertainment, dining and family fun. Its annual ArtPrize competition (Sept. 24 – Oct. 12, 2014) has been recognized as one of the world’s top five festive events by Time magazine. Downtown Market Grand Rapids, a dazzling urban oasis of fresh and artisan foods, furthers the city’s foodie reputation. Two huge culinary events – Restaurant Week GR (Aug. 13-24) and Cool Brews. Hot Eats. (late Feb.) – celebrate the art of farm-to-fork dining. The art of craft brewing is also celebrated here. Grand Rapids has earned the title “Beer City USA” for two year’s running, and it’s home to both America’s best brewpub (HopCat) and the world’s 3rd best brewery (Founders Brewing Co.). Beer lovers can travel the Beer City Ale Trail, a driving tour of 30+ breweries that stretches from here to the lakeshore. Every corner of Grand Rapids is packed with awesome things to do, from Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park (one of the world’s 100 most visited art museums) to John Ball Zoo (Michigan’s 4th most visited cultural institution) to Fifth Third Ballpark (home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, a Detroit Tigers affiliate). Downtown Grand Rapids may offer the most fun per square inch, as more than 90 restaurants, shops, museums, theaters and nightclubs are located within a five-minute walk of each other. Downtown is also home to the city’s largest community events, including ArtPrize, Festival of the Arts (June 6-8), Blues on the Mall (Wednesdays from June-Aug.) and GRandJazzFest (Aug. 16-17). Grand Rapids was just named the 2nd most secure large city in the US, so you can count on feeling safe and comfortable here. Forbes magazine named Grand Rapids the #1 place to raise a family in America, so you’ll also feel welcome if you’re traveling with kids. Want to bring a little of Grand Rapids home with you? Explore unique clothing boutiques, antique dealers, gourmet specialty shops and art galleries that spill out from downtown streets to surrounding neighborhoods. For famous brand names, shop two massive malls and such sought-after retailers as Cabela’s and HomeGoods. So grab your copy of The Experience, Grand Rapids’ official visitor guide, to plan a city getaway while you’re basking in the sun on a lakeshore beach. Or browse the blog and mobile site at ExperienceGR.com. Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan’s Gold Coast give you the best of both worlds!

From a seasonal outdoor farmer’s market to an indoor market hall with 20+ vendors, along with events, live entertainment and cooking classes, the Market is more than a place to shop; it’s a food experience. Open seven days a week, the Indoor Market Hall hosts a culinary collective of butchers, bakers, fishmongers, chocolatiers and more. Pick up a freshly juiced smoothie for a snack, gourmet tacos for lunch and a scoop of freshly made ice cream for dessert. Need a hostess present? Artisan gift ideas include hand-infused olive oil, tea, herbs and spices or a fresh bouquet of flowers. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from June through mid-October, the outdoor Market features fresh fruits and vegetables, fragrant herbs, flowers, honey, eggs and more. Taste the sweet-tartness of a perfect Michigan cherry and pick up fresh veggies or a pint of locally-grown blueberries. If you’re curious, knowledgeable vendors can tell you how long until something ripens, or how to prepare it in a new way. (Outdoor Market is also open on Saturdays in May and early December.) If you’re starting your weekend early, check out happy hour at the Market from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Grab a local beer, specialty cocktail, or glass of wine and listen to live music while you sit and sip (or shop!). From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, visit the Market for “Brunch Bites and Bloody Marys.” Build-your-own Bloodies and eat your way around the 20+ vendors offering specialty “brunch bites.” The menu changes weekly, and includes goodies like quiche, breakfast tacos, apple cranberry croissants and paella. Trying to decide when to visit? Plan your trip around a class in the Demo Kitchen or Teaching Kitchen! From “girls night out” classes and cooking lessons for families to chef’s tasting dinners, classes at the Market are a fun and social way to learn about the food we eat. For hours, locations and more, visit www.downtownmarketgr.com.

he Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library Museum in downtown Grand Rapids pays tribute to our nation’s 38th president, Gerald R. Ford. Here you can see a full-scale replica of the Oval Office, the actual tools used in the Watergate burglary, a section of the Berlin Wall, and a tribute to First Lady Betty Ford who helped pave the way for modern First Ladies. Also located on the museum grounds in the shade of towering pines are the resting places of President and Mrs. Ford. The museum is hosting a special exhibition through June 16, 2014; “Growing up Grand,” which follows Gerald Ford from his birth in Nebraska, to his growing up in Grand Rapid, and his graduation from the University of Michigan. This is a first-of-its-kind look at the life of Ford, the only president to hail from Michigan. For more information and hours, visit www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov or call (616) 254-0400.

June 12-15 Waterfront Film Festival South Haven

igers are returning to Grand Rapids’ John Ball Zoo! This summer, a new state-ofthe-art exhibit, “Crawford Tigers of the Realm,” becomes the home of three Amur tigers, the largest cats in the world. The exhibit features multiple habitats that allow the big cats to patrol the woods much like they would in the wild, and a mesh-enclosed tiger trail. The trail is viewable from the visitor boardwalk that meanders through the habitat, allowing you to spot tigers strolling the forest path as you walk the boardwalk! The zoo also has plans to add a holding/breeding facility that will make it eligible to participate in the Tiger Species Survival Plan and play a crucial role in helping to save wild tigers from extinction. More than 250 species of animals at the zoo represent the wilds of Africa, Asia, Australia, North and South America, and Michigan. Spend a fun family day at the zoo enjoying the aquarium and tropical building, a frog exhibit, and the TreeTops Outpost and Children’s Nature Play Zones. Here kids can clamber up a cargo net-climb, wander through an arbor tunnel, kick back in the kids’ tree house, and get a bird’s-eye view of the grizzly and maned-wolf habitats. Recreation areas with picnic tables and grills, concession stands, a zip line, sky trail ropes course, camel rides, Budgy aviary, Pygmy goat corral, hobby farm, sting ray lagoon, the Funicular, gift shop, and more provide something for everyone! For more information about the zoo, summer programs, special events, and hours of operation, visit www.johnballzoosociety.org, Facebook, or call (616) 336-4300.
