ucked away among the gently rolling hills of southwest Michigan is one of the newest members of Michigan’s wine-making family, 12 Corners Vineyards. This up and coming winery takes its name from the rural hamlet, Twelve Corners, which is curled up at the crossroads of Red Arrow Highway and Benton Center Road, about two miles east of Benton Harbor. Owned and operated by a group of lifelong Michigan farmers, the 115-acre vineyard grows vinifera and hybrid grapes and produces a variety of estate wines such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The recently opened 12 Corners Vineyards Tasting Room in South Haven (511 Phoenix Street) soon will be joined by another in Benton Harbor (at the intersection of I-94 and I-196/US-31). It is set to open in June. At both convenient locations, you can sample the winery’s vintages as well as purchase a bottle or a case for your enjoyment at home with family and friends. The Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven, dedicated to the preservation of Michigan Great Lakes maritime history and culture, offers engaging museum displays; the Great Lakes Research Library, open by appointment, with nearly 4,000 books, maps, DVDs, nautical charts, periodicals, and more; classes in building your own wooden boat; and exciting on-water experiences! You’ll get a thrill aboard the Friends Good Will, a replica square topsail sloop that fought for both the U.S. and Great Britain during the War of 1812. The ship takes regularly scheduled sails on Lake Michigan from late-May through mid-September, with its crew dressed in full 1812-era regalia. Or you can take a leisurely cruise up and down the Black River aboard the electric river launch, Lindy Lou. The launch is a replica of the recreational vessels once found in South Haven in the early 1900s. The launch cruises daily from mid-May through mid-September. A new onwater experience features the Bernida, a prize-winning 1921 R-Class yacht, famous for winning her class in the inaugural 1925 Bayview to Mackinac race and again in 2012! All of the museum’s on-water experiences require reservations. Saugatuck & Douglas T

ucked between the folds of southern Lake Michigan’s soaring sand dunes and sparkling blue waters are the sister cities of Saugatuck and the Village of Douglas. Embraced by lush natural beauty, the area has been inspiring artists for more than a century, compelling them to build studios and establish galleries here. The “Art Coast of Michigan,” as the region has become known, celebrates its history and creativity every day of the year with gallery strolls and open houses, jazz concerts, art fairs, heritage walks, culinary tours, and more. A walk on Saugatuck’s boardwalk and village streets takes you past glistening yachts, sleek sailboats, charter-fishing vessels, marinas, shops, restaurants, gazebos, and the hand-cranked Saugatuck Chain Ferry. This quaint piece of Victorian technology will transport you across the Kalamazoo River to one of the most fabulous beaches in the world – the award-winning Oval Beach – in a matter of minutes. And if this seems a little tame, you can climb aboard a dune schooner with its over-sized tires and open-air seating for a thrilling ride over the rolling mountains of sand along the Lake Michigan shoreline. For more information about the Saugatuck/Douglas area, stop in at the new Saugatuck/Douglas Visitor & Convention Bureau Welcome Center at 95 Blue Star Highway (the former You’nique Art Gallery building), visit www.saugatuck.com, or call (269) 857-1701. www.shorelinevisitorsguide.com

Human Powered Adventure S

augatuck Michigan has one of the oldest handcranked chain ferries in America. It operates only in the summer and takes visitors across the Kalamazoo River by an operator hand-cranking it along a chain that stretches across the river. Saugatuck has had a ferry crossing on the river since 1838 and it’s the last of its kind on the Great Lakes. Three pullies keep it in line as it is being pulled across the Kalamazoo River. This is an unusual operation to watch. When it is ready to cross the Kalamazoo River, the operator takes a can of compressed air and blows a very loud whistle (airhorn) alerting all boat traffic to stop. The operator turns a crank on the inside and this pulls the ferry along the chain. The ferry goes from downtown Saugatuck across the river and back.

Clearbrook Golf Club E

stablished in 1926, Clearbrook Golf Club’s course just keeps getting better with age. Its most recent accolades come from the editors of Golf Digest’s Places to Play Guide, who gave Clearbrook 4.5 stars out of 5, and rated it “superior” for Pace of Play and Value. This championship layout in the Saugatuck/Douglas area is well-groomed and beautifully landscaped with water and woods on nearly every hole; and recent improvements and upgrades will only make it better. Its Grill Room restaurant is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Holland Museum F

rom the old country to the new world, Holland Museum presents a diverse collection of art and artifacts that tell the story of this vibrant and historic west Michigan community. The museum’s permanent exhibitions include an extensive collection of Dutch fine and decorative arts spanning 400 years, and an historic paper collection highlighting the history of both the Netherlands and Holland, Michigan. In Wichers Gallery, June 14 through December 30, is “From Craft to Industry: The Ship and Boat Builders of Holland.” This special exhibit tells the story of Holland’s watercraft building industry from its earliest beginnings dating back to 1836. Focusing on the personal stories of the men and women of Holland who built ships and boats, the exhibit delves into the creativity, skills, and tenaciousness they employed during challenging times. Be on hand the weekend of September 7-8, as the historic Van Raalte Farm hosts Holland Museum’s 5th Annual Civil War re-enactment extravaganza. This free event features two days of music, portrayals of historic figures, medical scenarios, period-style vendors, a dinner and night fire, Dutch church service, and of course, battle re-enactments. The Cappon and Settlers Houses, just a few short blocks from the museum, tell the story of Holland’s earliest settlers. The Cappon House is a beautifully restored Italianate Victorian home once occupied by Holland’s first mayor, Isaac Cappon. In it you will find one of the country’s largest collections of early Grand Rapids furniture. The Settlers House is a quaint cottage of a working class family furnished with locally used objects from 1845-1880. ublic, the new full service restaurant in downtown Zeeland has quickly become a favorite of locals and visitors alike with its “handcrafted comfort food” and urban yet homey décor. And you can feel the passion that chef/owner Lucas Grill has for this place in every detail and you can taste it in every bite. As a youngster, Grill knew he wanted to own a restaurant (one Christmas he asked for an Easy Bake Oven!). “Sometimes a profession picks you,” he said. As soon as he graduated from high school, Grill enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America, followed by graduation from Michigan State University’s hospitality program where he learned the business-end of being a restaurateur. Over the next several years he worked for a number of five-diamond restaurants around the country, learning from some of the best chefs in the trade. He was now ready to head out on his own and fulfill a childhood dream. A trained businessman, Grill saw the need for a restaurant such as Public in the Zeeland area and knew he had found his new home. The restaurant’s name, Public, has no hidden meaning: “of or concerning the people or community . . .” Chef Grill wanted his restaurant to be a place where people could get the comfort foods they grew up with. So he set out to create a menu that incorporated such dishes, and then added his own special twists.

“Everything is made from scratch and is fresh,” says Grill. Public’s menu changes seasonally, to make use of local fresh fruits and vegetables. “We know the farmer down the road where we get our pork chops, and in season, we have a grower who stops by the back door to drop off fresh produce,” he added. Public also prides itself in offering more than 35 Michigan microbrews, 12 by-the-glass wines, 100 bottles of on-reserve wine, and it even makes its own ginger ale. Public serves lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. “We have everything from a burger and beer for $10, to steak and a $200 bottle of wine,” said Grill. On Monday nights, Burger Night, you can get a freshly-ground handcrafted burger and a domestic beer for $5; and on Wednesday, Wine Down Night, you get 25 percent off all wine by the bottle – including reserve bottles. Once a month, Chef Grill hosts a special wine and beer dinner. At these events, you dine family style at the restaurant’s Community Table and have the opportunity to chat with the brew masters and vintners about the beverages selected to accompany the evening meal. “I feel really blessed. The community has been so supportive. I absolutely love what I do, and I love talking to our customers,” Grill added. Arts, Culture and Artifacts at the Tri-Cities Museum F

rom functional art to woolly mammoths, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum in Grand Haven has two exciting exhibitions for you to explore this summer. On display now through August 31 is Form & Function: Ethnographic Art from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. This exhibition “combines history, art, and culture,” and shows the differences between “beliefs, religions and ideas – most notably the difference between the material, ‘throw-away’ culture we are used to and that of other countries where scarce resources are carefully and lovingly preserved.” View an array of beautifully-made pieces crafted from wood, textiles, metal, basketry, and ceramics used in everyday tasks such as storage, cooking, etc. Through August 31, come and experience the highly-anticipated Ice Age Imperials. This interactive exhibition presents a dramatic and realistic picture of Michigan some 12,000 years ago when mastodons and woolly mammoths roamed the wilds of Michigan, six-foot tall beavers swam in the lakes, and packs of fearsome dire wolves and saber tooth cats hunted the musk oxen that grazed in woodlands. As you wander through full-scale dioramas, you can hear the roar of a saber tooth cat, see the tusks and matted hair from an enormous mammoth, and touch the fossilized teeth from these awesome ancients. Kids especially will enjoy ‘digging’ for artifacts and making cave art. Tri-Cities Historical Museum is the premier showcase for the history of the Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg areas. It is housed in two historic buildings – the former Grand Trunk Railroad Depot built in 1870 (1 N. Harbor Drive) and the Akeley Building constructed in 1871 (200 N. Washington). The museum’s ongoing exhibits feature artifacts from fur trading and lumbering days, railroad history, transportation, medical, Native American, and the United States Coast Guard. But the museum’s most eye-popping artifact is the 800,000-pound, 101-foot long, 2,979-horsepower Pere Marquette 1223 steam locomotive, listed on the National Historic Register. For more information, visit the museum online at www.tri-citiesmuseum.org, on Facebook, or call (616) 842-0700. FREE Admission

Using ice luge sleds that have been outfitted with special wheels, you lie on your back on the sled and let gravity do its thing, flying down the fiberglass track, covering 300 feet in just nine seconds! For more information about the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex and hours of operation, visit www.mssports.org. A motor vehicle permit is required for admission to the park. he White Lake Area has long been known as a “relaxing vacation destination.” The peaceful White River, which meanders through the twin cities of Montague and Whitehall, offers leisurely afternoons of floating, paddling, and fishing; the scenic 22-mile-long Hart-Montague Trail State Park has its southern trailhead here; and Lake Michigan’s stunning white sand beaches and refreshing surf offer hours of fun in the sun. Perched on the picturesque shores of White Lake, both towns share a rich maritime history and a warm community spirit. All season long they host a variety of family-friendly festivals and special events. Summertime staples include Montague’s farmers and artisan markets; monthly guided nature walks; arts and crafts fairs; and evening concerts at the tree-shaded lakeside band shell. And, if you need a little drama in your life, Whitehall’s historic Howmet Play House, which has been in nearly continuous operation since 1916, offers a variety of theatrical performances and live concerts all summer long. For a look back in time, visit the White River Light Station & Museum in Whitehall. Since 1875, this historic lighthouse has marked the channel entrance from Lake Michigan into White Lake. In the museum you can examine exhibits about Michigan’s rich maritime and lumbering history; outside, you can watch pleasure boats motoring through the channel’s blue-green waters. Another chapter of the communities’ history is depicted on the world’s largest weathervane, which stands proudly at the corner of Dowling and Water Streets. A replica of the famous lumber schooner, Ella Ellenwood, graces its top. For more information about the White Lake Area, visit www.whitelake.org, call (800) 879-9702, or stop in at the Welcome Center housed in the historic C&O Railroad Depot building on the For more information about the Causeway between Montague and Whitehall (124 W. Grand Rapids

ess than an hour from the welcoming waters and sugar-sand beaches of Lake Michigan, you’ll find hot fun in a cool city— Grand Rapids, Michigan. Distinctive enough to be named by Forbes as one of the Top 10 Places To Raise A Family and delicious enough to be ranked among the Top 10 Vacation Cities for Beer Lovers, Grand Rapids is the perfect escape for a casual daytrip or weekend excursion. Home to one of TIME Magazine’s “Five Festive Events You Won’t Want To Miss in 2013,” ArtPrize (Sept. 18-Oct. 6), and other great celebrations from GRandJazzFest (August 17-18) to Blues on the Mall (Wednesdays from June to August) and Festival of the Arts (June 7-9), Grand Rapids is always buzzing with the art and music scene that makes it so unique. Stirring things up this summer is the opening of the first LEED-certified market in the country, Downtown Market Grand Rapids. Filling over 25,000 sq. ft. of space, this one-of-a-kind urban oasis will blend 24 retail shops, a fresh local produce market, bakery, butchery, brewery, restaurant, school, performance hall, rooftop greenhouse, kids’ learning kitchen, and, if you can imagine it, even more! The new Downtown Market is just the beginning to the Grand Rapids’ food and beer story. Home to more than 20 local craft breweries, the #1 Brew Pub in the U.S. (HopCat), and the 3rd Best Brewery in the World (Founders Brewing Co.), Grand Rapids is fueled by its passionate local chefs and master brewers. From Restaurant Week GR (August 14-24) to the newest winter food & beer promotion, Cool Brews. Hot Eats, held in late February, Grand Rapids is serving up farm-to-fork creations and award-winning craft beer like never before. If you can pry yourself away from the endless list of great places to eat and drink, there’s plenty more in store for you in Grand Rapids. An entire day could be spent exploring all 132 acres of one of the Top 30 Must-See Museums on the Planet, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, or going out on a limb for a ziplining adventure and visit to John Ball Zoo’s newly expanded bear exhibit. Or, you can always opt for a day of classic family fun at the ballpark with the West Michigan Whitecaps, Class A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. No trip to Grand Rapids would be complete without a little something to bring back home with you. That’s why you’ll love exploring the unique clothing boutiques that range from modern to vintage, antique dealers that line the East town streets, and the gourmet specialty stores and art shops that give Grand Rapids shopping its creative flair. You’ll also notice a few new popular favorites to explore, including the new Cabela’s location in Grandville and HomeGoods on 28th street. So, while you’re stretching out your beach towel and basking in the sun on the shoreline, grab your copy of The Experience, Grand Rapids’ official visitor guide, or browse the blog and mobile site at expereincegr.com to start dreaming up your own way to experience the hot fun of this cool city.

Grand Rapids Art Museum

Current exhibitions include:

ocated in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM), established in 1910, has grown to include more than 5,000 works of art, including American and European 19th and 20th century paintings and sculpture, and more than 3,000 works on paper. Embracing the city’s legacy as a leading center of design and manufacturing, GRAM also has a growing collection in the area of design and modern craft. The new Art Museum is internationally known for its distinguished design and LEED Gold certified status. For more information and hours of operation, visit GRAM online at www.artmuseum.org, on Facebook, or call (616) 831-1000.

The exhibition, The Jansma Print Collection at the Grand Rapids Art Museum: Five Centuries of Masterpieces, celebrates the donation of “The Flight into Egypt” by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italian, 1727–1804). Acquisition of the set of 18th-century prints by Tiepolo marks a milestone for the Jansma Print Collection by representing Christian art in five consecutive centuries of printmaking. These gifts help make GRAM a destination for print scholars, printmakers, and students. Other artists featured in this exhibition and representing each century are: Albrecht Dürer, 16th century; Rembrandt van Rijn, 17th century; Edouard Manet, 19th century; and Max Pechstein, 20th century.

The Improvisational Quilts of Susana Allen Hunter May 10 through August 25

Using her innate flair for abstract design, Susana Allen Hunter (1912–2005) created hundreds of colorful improvisational quilts throughout her lifetime. From the 1930s to the 1970s she lived in Wilcox County, Alabama, and created brightly-patterned quilts that reflected her life in that rural community as well as her experiences as an African-American woman. Hunter turned the “fabric” of everyday life into eye-catching quilts with an abstract, asymmetrical and often modern feel.

GRAM on the Green July 12 through August 23

Friday Nights at GRAM moves outdoors for live music and a cash bar on the Museum Terrace, sketching, games, and more. Enjoy dance fitness classes before the event, and join ballroom dancing afterward, courtesy of the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown Alliance. For more information, visit www.artmuseumgr.org.

ArtPrize 2013

A

rtPrize is an open arts competition that takes place each autumn in Grand Rapids. The event is scheduled to take place September 18 through October 6, 2013. More than 1,500 artists display their work throughout downtown--on lawns and open spaces, in hotel lobbies, at museums and restaurants, and various other venues. ArtPrize is a true community event, where everyone is encouraged to experience the art, consider the artists’ message and then vote to determine the winner.

hile Yogi and Boo Boo dozed this winter, crews at the John Ball Zoo were busy expanding and renovating their home. The grizzly bears’ new habitat now features a soft metal mesh that allows you to better see them through glass viewing windows. You may even have the opportunity to get nose to nose with one of the furry brown beauties! A new waterfall and bathing pool will undoubtedly inspire all kinds of splishing, splashing, and taking a bath(ing)! Also new this year is the training wall where you can watch zookeepers working with the bears. Just up the hill from this exhibit is the new Jandernoa Children’s Tree Top Outpost. Here kids can clamber up a cargo net climb, wander through an arbor tunnel, kick back in the kids’ clubhouse, and get a bird’s-eye view of the grizzlies and their new home. Rope bridges connecting different sections of the Outpost offer plenty of play activity throughout. Spend a family day at the zoo enjoying its recreation areas with picnic tables and grills, concession stands, zip line, a sky trail ropes course, swan boat and camel rides, a Budgy aviary, petting corral, the sting ray lagoon, a Funicular, gift shop, and more! Also located on the museum grounds in the shade of towering pines are the resting places of President and Mrs. Ford. From May 7 through January 2014, the museum is hosting a special exhibition, “Growing up Grand,” which follows Gerald Ford from his birth in Nebraska, to his growing up in Grand Rapid, and his graduation from the University of Michigan.
