Fall for Fishing on the St. Joseph River
j o s e p h
fun events year-round!!
Most people associate fishing out of St. Joseph with summer fishing on Lake Michigan, but the St. Joseph River is actually home to one of the country’s best fall and winter steelheading fisheries. Here are a few interesting points about St. Joseph River fishing, courtesy of Gold Coast Fishing Company: · Steelhead are migratory rainbow trout. · The best fishing for steelhead typically takes place from late October/early November through April. · Steelhead not only provide great table fare, but they are probably the best freshwater fighting fish you will ever find. Our clients enjoy battling steelhead on light tackle when we take them fishing on the river. · We make the trip comfortable for our guests by taking them on Chameleon, our heated and enclosed river boat. · We supply all of the tackle, gear and bait, and we clean and bag our clients’ catch. · The snow-covered banks of the St. Joe River provide a peaceful and scenic setting that most people never get to see. In the fall, the changing colors of the trees along the bank are a beautiful sight as well. For more information, visit www.gcfishco.com.

augatuck hugs the harbor along the Kalamazoo River, its brightly painted shops and galleries framed in a cloak of brilliantly colored autumn leaves. Fanciful 1800s homes and beautifully restored inns and bed-and-breakfasts adorn village streets and beckon to visitors with the warm glow of lamplight. The sound of crunching leaves under shoppers’ feet and the honk of Canadian geese overhead salute the arrival of autumn. It won’t be long before the crystal calm of winter settles over the towns – snow dusting gabled roofs and muffling the fall of footsteps on village sidewalks. Throughout town, you’ll find a variety of quaint shops offering eclectic wares. After a day of browsing, you can relax and enjoy refreshment and rejuvenation at one of the area’s cozy and inviting dining establishments.

Designing for Generations “There is nothing quite like seeing gold transform into molten glowing liquid,” said third generation goldsmith Grace Koorey . “I’ve been involved in this process since I was a little girl and to this day it still holds a great deal of wonder for me.” Koorey Creations is nestled in the beautiful downtown area of Saugatuck, a small gallery like most in the town, built in historic homes that have a quaint European feeling. “Our gallery is small and unobtrusive. Usually people are caught off guard with what we have.” Koorey Creations specializes in high quality craftsmanship and artistic designed jewelry in wide variety of metals. Paired with international award winning gemstone cutters and experience in complicated repair/alteration services, this cozy store has given them a niche in this industry for years. Twenty years to be exact! This past year the Koorey family added a long awaited workshop demonstration room. “Making jewelry the way that we do can be a very “closed door” experience. We have for years wanted to share some of the crafting processes with customers. They are always very curious.” The Koorey Team invites you to come in to visit this fall and winter season. Watch and experience the wonder of molten metal being transformed into beautiful, artistic jewelry. Check out their website for demonstration show times and store hours.

Fenn Valley Vineyards & Wine Cellar
F
enn Valley Vineyards and Cellars has been a family owned and operated vineyard, and a wonderful member of the lakeshore community since 1973. The Welsch family began the winery by carefully selecting a beautiful 240 acre site as the ideal location for their venture by factoring in climate, landscape and fertile soil. Throughout the world, major viticultural areas are almost always located near a large body of water. Areas like California, Washington, Oregon, Australia, Germany, Italy, France--and Michigan--with it’s moderating Lake Michigan breezes. Today Fenn Valley continues to be a progressive estate winery, growing grapes to be later processed in their cellar. The vineyard is being expanded as new varieties of grapes are proven to work well in the Michigan climate. Fenn Valley offers fun and informative tours year around. Their tasting room and retail shop is also open year round. Visit them and see how world class wine is made from grapes grown in Michigan. Foods
Comfort F
all and Winter--the seasons evoke images of cozy fireplaces, fuzzy warm sweaters, and yes, a yearning for comfort foods. Here in the Michigan mitten, we are perfectly situated to enjoy this very heartwarming trio. In Holland, there’s an abundance of great restaurants offering familiar favorites that bring back childhood memories; serving delicious foods that make us smile, and are oh soo satisfying. At the Biscuit in Holland, (Washington Square), just imagine-warm, homemade biscuits with strawberries and whipped cream. Specializing in tantalizing breakfasts, (they even make their own Brioche for French Toast), they also serve delicious lunches. The Good Earth proudly serves homemade soups, salads, wraps and even fresh-baked bagels. When it’s cold outside, there’s six or so soups (including chili) to choose from, along with hot chocolate, espresso and a warm atmosphere to go with it. Alpen Rose Restaurant brings the authentic taste of the Alps to downtown Holland. The famed European mountain range carves through countries as diverse as Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland–a cornucopia of cultures and cuisines which can all claim the title “Alpen.” Pastries, soups, pastas, & hearty American favorites along with European fare are served in a warm and inviting atmosphere. At the Currah Irish Pub, you can experience the friendly nature of Ireland right in downtown Holland. The Curragh offers a great menu of traditional Irish cuisine, with daily specials, exceptional desserts and warm, friendly service and surroundings. Cranes in the City serves hot coffee, freshly made cider donuts, and delicious warm apple pie. Need we say more? Well, there is more...sandwiches, soups, and salads. At Salt and Pepper, you can enjoy a burger, pasta, salads, delicious entrees and a variety of freshly prepared foods and beverages. Taking the Seas:
The Rise of the American Aircraft Carrier
F
or one hundred years, aircraft carriers have launched their planes over the seas, assuring the fleet and soldiers ashore air superiority and support in the far-flung corners of the map, where leaders determine our interests are at risk. They are the largest, most powerful warships ever to plow the waves, monuments to our nation’s strength, ready to respond to crises abroad. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum offers Taking the Seas: The Rise of the American Aircraft Carrier, an exhibit that explores the development of this unique ship and the role it plays in projecting our nation’s influence abroad. From the first efforts at the close of the First World War, to the central role the carrier played in winning World War II, to the newest super-carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, the exhibit offers key artifacts, documents, and video of the rise of the American carrier. You don’t have to go all the way to New York to join a happy crowd and watch a ball drop down to start another year, you can count down to 2015 a lot closer to home – and the celebration is FREE. The ball, the biggest in Michigan, sports more than 6,000 LED lights and is the center of attention for this all-important holiday. After the countdown, fireworks will light the ToddandBradReed.com Ludington sky in celebration of a brand new year. The fun starts at 9:30 p.m. with music, an entertainment tent and commemorative light-up glasses. For more information on the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, visit www.downtownludington.org/light-upthe-lake/.

Rolling hills of the breathtaking colors of the autumn season will welcome you as far as the eye can see. This beauty is almost a half million acres of opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and appreciate. The Pine and Pere Marquette Rivers snake through the forest and are waiting for you to raft, canoe and kayak their currents.
