ou couldn’t pick a better place to enjoy autumn than in Southwest Michigan – the state’s fertile fruit belt. U-pick orchards heavy with apples and peaches, family-owned wineries, countless farmers markets, mysterious corn mazes, and high-spirited fall festivals promise bushels of family fun! And when the cool autumn air plucks the last crimson and gold leaves from the trees, another exciting season waits in the wings. You’ll find cross-country ski trails in parks throughout the region and exhilarating downhill slopes within an hour’s drive of St. Joseph. The area’s serpentine snowmobile trail system leads in every direction, rambling through the woods and offering scenic beauty and adventure around every bend. Cozy lakeshore cottages, gourmet restaurants, unique boutiques, and inspiring cultural offerings make fall and winter especially memorable in Michigan’s great southwest. Magical Ice Carving Festival “Do you believe in magic? . . .” You will as you watch some of the country’s finest professional ice sculptors perform at St. Joseph’s 10th Annual Magical Ice Fest, Feb. 7-9. Dremels, chisels, and chainsaws are used to create extraordinary crystal-like carvings from ordinary blocks of ice. Only the sculptor knows what will emerge from the glistening cube of ice – a fish, falcons, or perhaps a fanciful fairy? Kicking off the magic weekend is the Fire & Ice Reception at the Shadowland Ballroom, (Feb. 7) with live music, Hawaiian fire dancers, and a martini ice luge. Also on tap are Ice Wars!, a speed-carving competition that gives competitors 15-minutes to create a carving; magic shows by magician John Dudley (Feb. 8); the SnowBiz Scavenger Hunt, which has you searching for ice sculptures throughout town for an opportunity to win prizes; kids’ activities (with cookies and hot cocoa!); ice skating; and of course, food and spirits! And if all of these icy activities have your teeth chattering, make your way down to the Silver Beach Carousel where you can escape from the cold into a tropical paradise during Waikiki Weekend. Sporting grass skirts, floral leis, and other tropical attire from our 50th state, the carousel critters await your arrival and promise a hula-va good time with surfing music, hula demonstrations, and warm Aloha greetings!
Slow Down. Enjoy. Experience
rural tranquility as you stroll through U-pick orchards, partake in 25 flavors of apple cider, picnic on a rolling vista and indulge in fine wines.

little bit of heaven awaits you in South H(e)aven! Nestled in southwest Michigan’s bountiful fruit-growing region, a patchwork quilt of orchards, vineyards, and family farms embrace this picturesque lakeside community. Beginning in August and stretching into late autumn, you can enjoy the just-picked goodness of blueberries, apples, peaches, and vegetables still warm from the sun, and sample lip-smacking fresh-pressed apple cider, wines, and spirits from area wineries and distilleries. When winter snow transforms the colorful quilt of farmers’ fields to one of pure white, strap on your cross-country skis or snowshoes for an invigorating workout on area trails. The 34-mile-long Kal-Haven Trail, which stretches between South Haven and Kalamazoo, is a popular route for snowmobilers. And the ice rink in downtown’s Dyckman Park will have skaters going in circles! Intimate cafés and restaurants serve up warm beverages and local dishes; and you can cozy up in quaint bed and breakfasts, luxurious inns, and convenient motels after a playful day in the snow. Clementine’s
T
ake your darlin’ to Clementine’s in downtown South Haven for a leisurely lunch or delightful dinner. A South Haven institution, Clementine’s restaurant is on the corner of Phoenix and Center Streets in the stately Old Citizen’s Bank building. It’s a virtual time capsule with original turn-of-the-century tin ceilings, brickwork, and a massive wood bar, and its walls are covered with photographs of the early days in South Haven. A favorite of locals and tourists alike for more than 30 years, this family-owned restaurant has an extensive menu, but is known for its fresh perch and hand-battered onion rings. You’ll also want to check out the “Brown Bag Specials” available during the fall and winter months. A second location – Clementine’s Too – sits on the banks of the St. Joseph River in St. Joseph, less than 25 miles south of South Haven. It features the same delicious menu items found at South Haven’s Clementine’s. For hours of operation and to check out the menu, visit www.ohmydarling.com. Clementine’s does not accept reservations.

Then scoot your boots on down to the “Boot Scoot” Bar Hop hosted by local wineries and pubs for some libations and grub, pick up produce at the farmers market, enjoy the biggest pumpkin and squash competition, pumpkin carving contests, seed-spitting contests, the Hoedown Street Dance with live band, and so much more. olland’s vivid tulips have long since faded, but a colorful new season awaits under a leafy canopy of crimson and gold. Autumn strolls into town Labor Day weekend with the annual Labor Day BoardWALK and Truck Parade, and picks up its pace as the months rush toward the New Year. A full roster of festivals and special events guarantee wagon-loads of family fun even as the color of autumn fades to winter white. Holland’s streets light up at the annual Parade of Lights (Dec. 3), followed by a month-long display of special holiday events and Christmas markets. Even though the area is blanketed in new-fallen snow, walking and driving in downtown Holland is a snap due to its state-of-the-art snowmelt system. The radiant heat that warms the cobblestone sidewalks and streets keeps snow and ice at bay all winter long. And the outdoor fireplace on Eighth Street not only toasts chilly fingers and noses, it also warms the soul. Exhibits
at the Holland Museum
F
rom the old country to the New World, Holland Museum presents a diverse collection of art, artifacts, and permanent and temporary exhibits that tell the story of Holland, Michigan. Now through December in the museum’s Wichers Gallery is “From Craft to Industry: The Ship and Boat Builders of Holland.” This special exhibit tells the story of Holland’s watercraft building industry from its earliest beginnings dating back to 1836. It focuses on the personal stories of the men and women of Holland who built ships and boats, and delves into the creativity, skills, and tenaciousness they employed during challenging times. Also on exhibit in the Focus Gallery through the end of December is “Harnessing the Wind,” which explores the past, present, and future of windmills – one of the most well-known Dutch icons. The exhibit looks at how they are used for industry, as a tourist attraction, and their future in the energy field. Visit historic Van Raalte Farm the weekend of September 7-8, when it hosts Holland Museum’s 5th Annual Civil War re-enactment extravaganza. This free event features two days of music, portrayals of historic figures, medical scenarios, period-style vendors, a dinner and night fire, Dutch church service, and of course, battle re-enactments. Coming to the Local History Gallery in November is a new exhibition, “Medal of Honor.” Get into the holiday spirit at Holland Museum’s Holiday Open House on December 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy refreshments, live music, and holiday merriment in the festively decorated museum. Holland museum’s permanent exhibits include an extensive collection of Dutch fine and decorative arts spanning 400 years, and an historic paper collection highlighting the history of both the Netherlands and Holland, Michigan. Bike
Holland
“East side, west side, all around the town” . . . take a spin through Ottawa County this fall perched on the seat of a bicycle. Feel the crisp autumn air caress your face, hear the crunch of leaves under your tires, and be embraced by spectacular autumn-tinged landscapes and shoreline. A web of more than 150 miles of paved, separate-use bike paths meander throughout the county, offering adventure around every bend. Holland’s bike path network includes several looped routes that incorporate some of the area’s most popular parks. A favorite is the Lakeshore Connector Path between Holland and Grand Haven. This trail runs for nearly 20 miles along the shoreline between Holland State Park and downtown Grand Haven. It features several beachfront parks including Holland’s Tunnel Park, Rosy Mound Natural Area, and Grand Haven State Park. And if you want to get off the beaten path, the Holland area also has a number of off-road trails for mountain biking. The “Holland & Grand Haven Bike” brochure features trail maps and information about picnic areas, popular attractions, and places to stay. You’ll also find out where you can rent a bicycle if you don’t have one of your own. Several merchants even offer electric bikes! To download and print the brochure, visit www.holland.org, or you can pick one up at the Holland Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at 78 East 8th Street.

Grand Haven & Spring Lake Y
ou’re ‘shore’ to have a great time in the Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg area! More than 30 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and countless bayous, estuaries, islands, and peninsulas offer adventures untold during Michigan’s most colorful season. You can explore from a canoe or kayak on the meandering Grand River Heritage Water Trail. Bike along more than 100 miles of trails that run through all three communities. Stroll the 2-½-mile-long wooden boardwalk that runs along Grand Haven’s scenic waterfront. Or get behind the wheel of your car for a self-guided tour of the lakeshore. Skis and snowshoes are in order when the landscape sports a coat of new-fallen snow. Listen to the quietude as you trek or glide over snow-covered trails that wind through silent woodlands and along ice-encrusted lakeshores. And if you prefer the great indoors, the local history museum offers exhibits and events that will ignite and inspire you on the coolest days. Lodging is plentiful and includes bed and breakfast inns, cabin and cottage rentals, and convenient hotels and motels, many of which offer fall and winter specials.

here else could you ride a trolley to a cardboard sled race, to snowboard and ski competition, to a “Family Dog Pull” or an “Intergalactic Human Sled Race”? Well, Grand Haven at the end of January for one. We’re not sure where else or “when else” might qualify as number two. A luau in January in Grand Haven? You bet. In fact, it’s billed as a Luau Extravaganza. A music pass will get you into the luau and into local bars for music, fun and drinks on Friday and Saturday nights. And as if that weren’t enough, Snow Angels will be competing, hamsters and gerbils will be racing and euchre players will be slamming down the cards and dueling to the . . . well, whatever in the Euchre Tournament. Where else but in Grand Haven? For more information visit http://winterfestmi.org

eanuts, pumpkins, workers, and weddings highlight the exhibitions at Muskegon’s Lakeshore Museum Center. “Peanuts . . . Naturally,” takes a light-hearted look at Charles Schultz’s exploration of the natural world through Peanuts comic strips, videos, objects, and interactive stations. Activity stations allow kids to learn more about and appreciate the wonders of the natural world. This exhibition runs through November 1. “They’re gettin’ married in the mornin’. . .” Running through December 29 is the “Here Come the Humes” exhibit. Twenty thirteen marks the 100th anniversary of the double wedding of the daughters of one of Muskegon’s most famous lumber barons. The Hume family home has been restaged as if the family were preparing for the 1913 wedding breakfast for Florence and Constance. The sisters’ wedding dresses are on display in the gallery of the City Barn, as is that of the bride of Tim Hume, who was also married in 1913. Opening November 16 and running until January 26, 2014, is “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964.” This bi-lingual (English/Spanish) exhibit created by the national Museum of American History and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services explores the Braceros’ contributions to communities in Mexico and the United States. It features the opportunities that became available and the challenges they faced as guest workers during the war years and afterwards. The exhibition includes oral histories and quotes and photographs by Leonard Nadel, a photographer who exposed employer violations endured by many braceros in 1956. October at the Lakeshore Museum Center and Hackley & Hume Historic Site means FREE tours all month long! hoose a Saturday (or pick all three!) and explore one of Michigan’s most scenic drives, Oct. 5, 12, and 19, during the 8th Annual Depot to Depot Fall Color Tour. Drive your car or pedal your bike on a self-guided tour between Montague and Muskegon (doesn’t matter in which city you start) to see fantastic fall color along the lakeshore. Anchoring each end of the route are two historic train depots that house the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Muskegon County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Stop in at either location to pick up a free map of the tour route that you can get stamped at designated sites. Get seven stamps on your map and turn it in at either depot to be entered to win either two round-trip passes on the Lake Express Ferry, which provides high-speed ferry service between Muskegon and Milwaukee, or four tickets to Muskegon’s own Michigan’s Adventure Amusement & Water Park to use in the 2014 season. Color-tour participants who stop in at the depots also receive discounts to area museums, fall refreshments, and coupons from area businesses. Free pumpkins to children while they last! Both the chamber and the convention and visitors bureau can provide you with details. For more information, visit www.whitelake.org, www.visitmuskegon.org, or call (231) 893-4585 or (231) 724-3100.

ut your family in the picture-perfect lakeside setting of Pentwater for fall and winter fun! The warm sunny days and long cool nights of autumn transform the village’s trees and gardens from lush greens and pastel pinks to a vibrant palette of primary colors against a backdrop of sparkling blue. View the radiant reds and glowing golds from the comfort of your car, a hiking or biking trail, or while paddling quiet waters in a canoe or kayak. And when crisp winter winds bring in the first snow of the season, join the flurry of skiers, sledders, and snowmobilers whose colorful outerwear looks like multi-colored sprinkles against the white of new-fallen snow. Pentwater likes to party and invites you to celebrate the seasons at community festivals and special events. Head downtown for Oktoberfest and the Annual Classic Car and Hot Rod Show & Cruise (Oct. 11-12), the annual Festival of Lights (Nov. 29), Christmas in the Village (Dec. 1-31), and WinterFest weekends in Hart and Pentwater (Feb. 8 & 15, 2014). Make a weekend out of it, and stay in any one of the area’s cozy motels, Victorian-era bed and breakfast inns, or a lakeside rental cottage. For more information, visit www.pentwater.org.

Ludington
rom its expansive, award-winning white sand beach-front and iconic lighthouses to the massive murals adorning downtown buildings, the popular port city of Ludington offers old-fashioned charm and an exciting slate of festivals and fun for the entire family. Kicking off the fall season is Downtown Ludington’s Oktoberfest Music & Craft Beer Festival (Oct. 12), which brings together Michigan beer, music, and cycling to celebrate the season and vibrant downtown Ludington. And closing out the old year and welcoming in the new is Ludington’s 5th Annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop (Dec. 31). Ludington’s woods and waters offer endless opportunities to experience the crisp air and beautiful fall colors. Enjoy invigorating jaunts along more than 21 miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through the dunes, along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and through the colorful woodlands of one of Michigan’s top state parks, Ludington State Park. Meandering through Mason County is the Pere Marquette River, which offers the opportunity to kayak or canoe through kaleidoscopically-colored leaves and experience fall from a unique perspective. Autumn in Pure Ludington also brings travelers discounts on overnight stays. Many hotels and motels in the area offer 50 percent off a second night stay on weekdays. When the snow falls, it blankets the trails to the delight of cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers; and it forms dramatic ice sculptures on windblown beaches. Fishing is a year-round sport in Mason County and winter is no exception. Many of the area’s inland lakes and rivers freeze over in winter, creating the perfect place to ice fish. Anglers can expect to catch blue gills, walleye, and more. For more information on places to stay and play this fall and winter, visit www.PureLudington.com, or call the Ludington Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at (800) 542-4600.
