One Cool Customer By Aram von Benedikt

T

here’s a a new cartridge on the block, and it’s one cool customer. Built to fulfill the desires of the classic .270 Winchester shooting crowd while meeting the demands of today’s long-range shooting and hunting protocol, the 6.8 Western steps into the arena and doffs its ten-gallon hat.

The Six-Eight is the brainchild of a collaboration between the engineers at Winchester and Browning. Its parent cartridge is Winchester’s own .270 WSM, with the shoulder pushed back to accommodate the long, heavy-for-caliber aerodynamic projectiles that modern long-range shooters love to send downrange. Barrel twist rate in rifles chambered for the new cartridge is updated as well, in order to accommodate and stabilize those same high-BC bullets. Twist rate in traditional .277 barrels (.270 Win, .270 WSM) is 1:10, while twist rate in new 6.8 Western rifles will be 1:8. Most at home in short-action rifles, the 6.8 is a cartridge suitable for lightweight, fast-cycling hunting rifles, as well as heavier, more stable platforms. The 6.8 Western has proven to be accurate, efficient and deadly (more on that in a minute). It’s not a barrel-burner, either, with factory ammo producing advertised muzzle velocities ranging from 2,835 up to 2,970 feet per second. Two loads were initially available: Winchester’s Expedition Long Range load (Booth #11827) features Nosler 165-grain Accubond Long Range bullets and sports a muzzle velocity of 2,970 fps

and a G1 BC of 0.620. Browning’s Long Range Pro Hunter load (Booth #12234) is topped with a new 175-grain Tipped Game King bullet from Sierra and offers a muzzle velocity of 2,835 fps, with a G1 BC of 0.617. Additional loads will soon be available, including a “green” load topped with a 160-grain Winchester Copper Impact projectile, and a 165-grain Match Competitive Target round from Winchester. Browning will make its X-Bolt rifle lineup available in the new 6.8 Western, and Winchester will chamber the new round in both the XPR and M70 rifle lineups. If your clientele demonstrates any interest in long-range shooting and hunting, or feels any loyalty to the venerable old .270 Winchester, it would behoove you to front-and-center some of these rifles on your shelves. I was able to get my hands on a 6.8 Western Browning X-Bolt Hunter early in the game. Only the Browning Long Range Pro Hunter ammo was available at the time — the one loaded with Sierra’s new 175-grain TGK bullet. Initial testing produced remarkable accuracy, with average threeshot group size coming in well under .75 MOA.

 The author with his elk, taken with Browning's 6.8 Western at a distance of 679 yards.

An early-season elk hunt found me afield with the 6.8 Western X-Bolt in hand. I had worked the rifle out to ranges approaching 850 yards, so while I hoped for a close shot I was prepared for a long one if it became necessary. A surprise encounter with a monster bull that showed up the second night of hunting proved the mettle of the new cartridge. With my son watching through a spotting scope, I made a perfect first-shot kill at 679 yards, dropping the 3983⁄8 B&C bull in his tracks.

 Initial testing produced remarkable accuracy, with the average three-shot group size coming in well under .75 MOA.

LEGAL DEFENSE FOR SELF DEFENSE

F

ounded by attorneys in 2009, U.S. LawShield protects and defends law-abiding gun owners from the legal fallout of using a firearm to defend themselves. “In the event of an emergency, our members have the peace of mind of immediate access to an Independent Program Attorney,” said Kirk Evans, president of U.S. LawShield. The company works with firearms dealers, instructors and ranges to add value to members by providing gun owners education and knowledge on state-specific self-defense law. U.S. LawShield member Jack Wilson experienced that reassurance on December 29, 2019, during an attack at the West Freeway Church of Christ in Texas. Wilson was an armed civilian leader of the church’s security program when a gunman attacked his fellow churchgoers inside the sanctuary. “Within a matter of seconds, Jack stopped the killer and defended his friends and family through

his life-saving actions,” Evans said. “Even though the parties involved did not treat him as a hero, Jack’s membership in the U.S. LawShield Legal Defense for Self Defense Program protected him from legal landmines the moment he fired his gun.” “Many people don’t consider the act of selfdefense a crime,” said Evans. “However, chances are good that all involved parties will be part of an investigation, and charges against either side may result. In an instant, you may have protected the ones you love, only to find your freedom is at stake — forcing you to find, retain and pay for a criminal defense attorney. As a member of U.S. LawShield, you have immediate access to an Independent Program Attorney in your greatest time of need.”

BENEFITS OF U.S. LAWSHIELD MEMBERSHIP

An Independent Program Attorney will answer emergency calls from members any time of day or

night — whether at 3 a.m. on a holiday morning or during afternoon rush hour. Members speak with an actual attorney who provides critically important and timely professional advice with attorney-client privilege. “Imagine having all attorneys’ fees covered for self-defense,” said Evans. U.S. LawShield coverage stands at the ready throughout the entire legal process. In some cases, the nightmare doesn’t end with acquittal in criminal court — there may be appeals, retrials or even civil lawsuits. Uniquely, your U.S. LawShield membership is with you in both criminal and civil court. No matter how much time it takes to defend your liberties in the courtroom, we have your back. There’s no cap regarding attorneys’ fees.” U.S. LawShield membership covers all legal weapons. No matter what a person uses to defend themselves, they are covered. And while gun laws everywhere are constantly changing, ignorance of

them is not an excuse. U.S. LawShield offers members state-specific members-only legal content not available anywhere else. “A major focus for U.S. LawShield is education,” said Evans. “We keep our members informed and empowered through our book series on gun laws, online resources, and in-person programs that feature experienced attorneys, firearms instructors and self-defense experts.” Evans also notes that members receive discounts through a national network of more than 6,000 affiliate gun ranges, gun stores and retailers.

CUSTOMIZED COVERAGE

With U.S. LawShield, members receive affordable coverage for as little as $10.95 per month, plus the ability to customize their plan with meaningful, affordable and exclusive added benefits to fit their unique needs. Add-ons include Gun Owner Identity Theft Coverage, Multi-State Protection (available in certain states only), Minor Children Coverage and Bail Bond & Expert Witness Coverage. “We call our mission ‘Preserving Freedom for Good,’” said Evans. “Through our program, we educate our members in self-defense law, empower

SAR’S MODERN MARVEL SAR USA is the American subsidiary of its Turkish parent company, Sarsilmaz. Founded in 1880, Sarsilmaz is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of small arms, and its state-ofthe-art firearms manufacturing facility is considered a modern marvel. The massive facility has 118,000 square feet of indoor space and over 164,000 square feet of outdoor space. Sarsilmaz utilizes the latest in CNC machining technology and equipment, including 11-axis mills and robotic cells, all of which incorporate high-end production software to eliminate human error during production. There are many factories in Turkey, but only SAR has this level of precision capabilities. As a result, SAR believes its quality, fit and finish are second to none. Continuous investment in R&D, technologically advanced equipment and expanding product lines has enhanced the company’s ability to produce outstanding pistols, shotguns and ammunition for customers in 78 countries, including the Turkish military, NATO and law-enforcement entities. The SAR9, which is the workhorse of the SAR pistol line, was originally designed and engineered to compete on the world stage as a military and lawenforcement sidearm. The NATO test the SAR9 had to pass was extremely rigorous. The first hurdle was a live-fire test that consisted of 50,000 rounds. A gun undergoing this test stage can experience, at most, only three failures. The SAR9 had zero failures and was the only gun to pass the test. After that, NATO testers ran 90,000 rounds through the gun. The SAR9 failed only once. Retailers can rest assured that all SAR USA products are manufactured with the same quality and workmanship as the SAR9. Booth #12838 (Sarusa.COM)

RCBS ROLLS OUT BLUETOOTH POWDER DISPENSER RCBS, the leading manufacturer of ammunition reloading equipment for rifles and pistols, has decided that even powder dispensers need to enter the modern age. That’s why its new ChargeMaster Link powder dispenser now offers Bluetooth technology to make the reloading process easier and faster. The ChargeMaster Link’s Bluetooth capabilities give the discerning handloader the ability to run the entire unit from a smartphone using the free, newly redesigned RCBS app. Doing so allows a user to save custom loads on the app and run the machine more quickly and efficiently. Hands-free operation with the app also means a reloader never has to touch the dispenser during the weighing process, ensuring more accurate readings. “The Link is the perfect dispenser for the budget-conscious handloader who is looking for a dispenser that is going to deliver consistent powder charges each and every time but does not need all of the additional features that our other models provide,” says Will Hemeyer, Sr., RCBS product manager. The ChargeMaster Link boasts 0.1-grain accuracy and a 2,000grain load-cell capacity. The unit can run on an external battery, meaning reloaders can operate it at home or in the field without being tied to power cords. The unit also features a universal fourcountry CE approved power supply and an LCD display with intuitive push-button controls. SRP: $349.95. Booth #42605 (rcbs.com)

Global Reach A relentless focus on product development helps make Hawke Optics a world leader in sport optics. By Slaton L. White

H

awke Optics, like many startups, began humbly, in a garage in the United Kingdom. Forty years later, Hawke has become a world leader in sport optics with a presence in 61 countries. It entered the United States in 2007 by establishing offices in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Along the way, the company has expanded its dealer network from a few hundred to thousands across the globe. It has also tripled the size of its staff. Just how did Hawke accomplish this? “Our company is blessed with very dedicated owners,” says Kevin Sheehan, Hawke’s vice president of sales and marketing. “Over the past several years, we have invested heavily in new product development and the expansion of our sales force, as well as in advertising. Hawke products have always been great; we just needed a great staff of sales reps to spread the word, along with lots of advertising to inform consumers. Each year, we have added many new products as well as hundreds of new dealers. We are very proud of our brand, and the growth has been very exciting.” Hawke has a wide range of products — 118 riflescopes, 48 binoculars, 65 models of rings, spotting scopes, and rangefinders. Sheehan says this plenitude of product is a result of the company’s relentless focus on product development. “Our product development team is always working on something new,” he says. “Many of our innovations come from them. However, many of our new product ideas also have come from our customers and employees. The result is an extensive line of optics with a wide variety of magnifications, reticles and features. We can meet the needs of just about any type of shooter. Some of our new products have been simple variations of existing products, such as a new magnification or reticle. Others, such as the new line of Sidewinder riflescopes, take years to develop. Our product development plan is constantly changing and is typically looking out three years. Launching new, innovative products is one of the most enjoyable parts of our work, and it has been a big part of our growth.”

The Sidewinder, by the way, is an on-target example of customer input. The new push/pull locking elevation turret has a “witness window” to ensure the shooter always knows which revolution the turret is on. “Many customers were asking for zero-stop turrets for our higher-end riflescopes,” Sheehan says. “In 2019, we introduced our patented Zero Lock ‘N’ Stop turrets in our Frontier 30 line, and they have been very popular. Some precision shooters, however, needed a quick way to get back to their zero, but didn’t want the stop. We developed the witness window for the Sidewinder, and it has been a very effective solution. “This feature is especially useful for shooters who like to dial out to longer distances and need to keep track of just how many revolutions have been made. As the elevation turret passes through each full rotation, the internal scale travels up or down and can be seen at a glance. Now, there’s no more uncertainty or lengthy click counting needed to get back to your original zero.” Another example of consumer input on Hawke’s product line is its extensive list of reticles. “Consumer demand has had a huge influence on the development of our reticles,” Sheehan says. “We sometimes joke that we are not an optics company, we are a ‘reticle’ company. There are so many different types of shooting, and a reticle that works great for a long-distance precision shooter is not necessarily great for a whitetail hunter. We are proud to offer a wide range from which to choose. In particular, many of our caliber-specific reticles, such as our .223/.308 marksman reticle and .22 HV LR and .17 HMR rimfire reticles, are very popular." Sheehan notes that along with innovation, Hawke is also known for quality, but quality that doesn’t cost a king’s ransom to own. He says this quality-price balance is baked into the company’s DNA: “Whether it’s our top-end Frontier 30 FFP riflescope for $1,100 or our Nature Trek monocular for $60, we are focused on quality and value. We develop our products with very practical features, and then we charge a fair price. We recognize that there are many good brands of optics, but you shouldn’t have to spend a fortune to get a great product.” Sheehan also says the company backs up its commitment to quality with a lifetime, no-fault warranty for consumers and dealers. “When the Hawke line of optics was developed many years ago, it was extremely important to our founder that the products be built with a very high standard for quality and durability,” he says. “Many of our scopes are used on magnum-caliber rifles, heavy-spring airguns, and crossbows. These can be very punishing on optics. We have to make sure the products are built strong, and we want our customers to know that we stand behind our quality. Knowing that they are covered for life brings them peace of mind.” Booth #43126 (hawkeoptics.com)

CHAMPION CONTINUES KIDS & CLAYS PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSES Champion Traps & Targets, makers of interactive and challenging target systems and trusted eye and ear protection, is continuing its support of the Kids & Clays Foundation for the second year in a row to help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities chapters. Kids & Clays supports participating Ronald McDonald House Charities chapters through shooting sports to improve the lives of critically ill children and their families. As a national sponsor, Champion sent a team to participate in the 20th annual sporting clays tournament fundraiser held by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa. In all, 54 squads participated. Two local Ronald McDonald Houses were the beneficiaries of the fundraiser, supporting their mission to provide a home away from home for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. The sold-out event raised over $110,000, money that provides thousands of room nights and other comforts to critically ill children and their families at a time when they need it the most. “The program has made an incredibly meaningful impact over the years, thanks in part to the strong support we have from partners like Champion,” said Doug Jeanneret, Kids & Clays executive director. “Champion’s commitment to positive change extends well beyond their passion for shooting sports. It has resulted in critically ill children and their families seeing more compassion in their lives.” Eliza Graves, Champion’s senior brand marketing manager for shooting accessories, was part of the Champion team at the tournament. “We’re honored to continue this tremendous partnership with Kids & Clays,” she said. “Not only was it a fun event, but it truly makes a difference in the lives of so many people.” Booth #42605 (championtarget.com)

SMITH & WESSON MOVING SOUTH Springfield, Massachusetts, has been the home of Smith & Wesson since the company was incorporated in 1852. That is about to change; the company intends to move its headquarters and significant elements of its operations to Maryville, Tennessee, just south of Knoxville. “This has been an extremely difficult and emotional decision for us, but after an exhaustive and thorough analysis, for the continued health and strength of our iconic company, we feel that we have been left with no other alternative,” said Mark Smith, president and chief executive officer. He specifically cited proposed legislation in Massachusetts that, if enacted, would prohibit the company from manufacturing certain firearms in the state. “These bills would prevent Smith & Wesson from manufacturing firearms that are legal in almost every state in America and that are safely used by tens of millions of law-abiding citizens every day exercising their Constitutional Second Amendment rights, protecting themselves and their families, and enjoying the shooting sports.” Because the products in question make up more than 60 percent of Smith & Wesson’s profits, the company felt it had no alternative but to relocate to a more firearm-friendly state. Smith indicated that the company vetted a number of locations, and then made the decision to relocate 750 jobs and its headquarters to Maryville. Key factors in the decision included support for the Second Amendment, a business-friendly environment, quality of life for S&W employees, cost of living and affordability, access to higher-education institutions, availability of qualified labor for its operations and headquarter functions, and favorable location for efficiency of distribution. “The strong support we have received from the State of Tennessee and the entire leadership of Blount County throughout this process, combined with the quality of life, outdoor lifestyle, and low cost of living in the greater Knoxville area, has left no doubt that Tennessee is the ideal location for Smith & Wesson’s new headquarters,” Smith said. “We would like to specifically thank Governor Bill Lee for his decisive contributions and the entire state legislature for their unwavering support of the Second Amendment and for creating a welcoming, business-friendly environment.” The move will not begin until 2023 and will not have an impact on employees’ jobs until then. “Our loyal employees are the reason for our success and are always our number-one

priority,” Smith said. “We are deeply saddened by the impact that this difficult decision will have on so many of our dedicated employees, but in order to preserve future jobs and for the viability of our business in the long term, we are left with no choice but to relocate these functions to a state that does not propose burdensome restrictions on our company.” As part of this strategic move, the facility in Springfield will be reconfigured, but will remain operational. Forging, machining, metal finishing and assembly of revolvers will be done there. The new facility that will be built in Maryville will contain the company’s headquarters, plastic-injection molding, pistol and long-gun assembly, and distribution. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021 and be substantially complete by the summer of 2023. Booth #12427 (smith-wesson.COM)

SLIM AND TRIM The new Pack9 from Trailblazer Firearms is a dynamic rifle chambered in 9mm that utilizes Glock-compatible magazines. It also features the company’s newest innovation — the Pivot — to create a slim and portable rifle. The Pack9 is less than 21 inches long when folded, but that collapsible stock gives the user a full length of pull when fully extended. Weighing approximately 5 pounds, the Pack9 is only 1.15 inches wide. The aluminum upper features an integral mil-spec optics-ready Picatinny rail. A second magazine stores securely in the glass-filled nylon stock. The 16-inch button-rifled and threaded steel barrel comes with a 1:10 twist. “In 2010, I came up with the crazy idea to fit a pistol in a candy tin. The same innovative spirit that brought you the LifeCard now brings you the Pack9,” says Aaron Voigt, president and founder of Trailblazer Firearms. “We believe the years of work poured into the Pack9 have resulted in a 9mm rifle at the intersection of design, innovation, performance, and survival.” Booth #41654 (trailblazerfirearms.COM)

FN UPGRADES THE 303 TACTICAL LESS-LETHAL LAUNCHER

fter setting the global standard in lesslethal technology with the original FN 303 system, FN America, LLC, a world leader in developing law-enforcement technology and training, has released the FN 303 Tactical Less Lethal Launcher. FN answered requests from law enforcement officers and agencies to make key improvements to ergonomics and adaptability while extending service life. “For nearly 20 years, FN has been in front of the ever-changing landscape of less-lethal product development with the FN 303 Less Lethal Launcher,” says Charles “Bucky” Mills, Sr., director of law enforcement and federal sales for FN America, LLC. “From the original FN 303 to a recent upgrade with the FN 303 Mk2, and now with the FN 303 Tactical, the constant evolution of our less-lethal product designs ensures users have the most versatile and innovative solutions to meet the dynamic needs of federal, state, and local agencies.” With the new, modular chassis system in the FN 303 Tactical, operators and armorers can quickly customize the buttstock, grip and sighting systems. The included FN SCAR buttstock is adjustable for length of pull, cheek rise and foldability, enhancing the ergonomics and sight alignment for patrol and civil-disturbance-unit officers. Optional stocks, such as the Drop-Down Folding Visor Helmet Stock, can be changed out easily for officers wearing full riot gear. A telescopic PDW Stock can also be added for com-

pact transport and close-quarters applications. A standard mil-spec A2-style pistol grip is included with the FN 303 Tactical Less Lethal Launcher, but it is fully interchangeable with aftermarket A2-style options. Fully adjustable polymer sights are mounted to a continuous Picatinny rail with 60 MOA of compensation to ease zeroing. The MIL-STD 1913 top rail accepts red-dot sights and other sights and lights. Upgrades to the air-operating system improve handling of the FN 303 Tactical and cuts department maintenance in half. The new, shorter air tank and compact 7.6-inch barrel transfers the weight balance farther back between the hands, allowing officers faster handling, sighting and less fatigue. Built from lightweight, rugged polymer and driven by the new, compact, compressed-air tank, the FN 303 Tactical upgrades deliver fin-stabilized projectiles with speed and accuracy. An optimized operating system doubles the service life of the FN 303 Tactical. Agencies can fire 5,000 projectiles before first routine maintenance is required. The fin-stabilized, .68-caliber FN 303 projectiles deliver optimum accuracy with maximum effectiveness and safety. Officers can quickly change projectiles, choosing between inert, marking impact, or irritant projectiles. The clear, rear magazine cover allows officers to see the projectile type and remaining count in the 15-round magazine. SRP: $1,439. Booth #11860 (fnamerica.com/law-enforcement/less-lethal)

WE’RE JUST GETTING WARMED UP

-----Back in 1922, it was just a fireproof building on the outskirts of Anoka, Minnesota, that 30 paces would get you across. But our founders had the vision to see something more. They knew that, when driven by a constant flow of new ideas and staffed by hardworking American employees, the plant would become a cornerstone of manufacturing might. It was that spirit of innovation, constant push for advancement and tireless dedication to our customers that brought Federal ® Ammunition into being, sustained us through the years, and keeps us going strong today—and for our next 100 years.

MEET THE 30 SUPER CARRY Federal’s exciting new cartridge is designed with concealed carry in mind.

By Brad Fitzpatrick

O

ne of the most notable product introductions at SHOT Show 2022 is Federal’s new concealed-carry cartridge, the 30 Super Carry. The two most popular semiauto-carry cartridges are the .380 ACP and the 9mm Luger, but Federal engineers realized that both cartridge designs could be improved upon. The .380 ACP is a compact, light-recoiling round that’s suitable for new shooters, but the cartridge’s terminal ballistics are at the minimal threshold for effective personal defense. The 9mm Luger is the most popular carry cartridge today, but it’s not as compact as the .380 ACP. The 30 Super Carry was designed to bridge the gap between these established cartridges. Since it utilizes a smaller .312-inch bullet (the same used by the .327 Federal Magnum), the 30 Super Carry allows for a magazine capacity that

is at least one more than a 9mm in single-stack magazines; furthermore, it holds at least two rounds more than most 9mm double-stack magazines. Guns chambered for 30 Super Carry can be built with a smaller grip circumference than 9mm guns, but the 30 Super Carry gives up nothing to the 9mm regarding terminal ballistics. In essence, the new 30 Carry carries like a .380, but hits like a 9mm. When Federal tested the new 100-grain 30 Super Carry HST load against its 9mm and .380 ACP HST loads, the results were telling. The 30 Super Carry load generates 347 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle, which isn’t far removed from the company’s 124-grain HST load (which generates 381 foot-pounds of energy). And, that is far more than the 233 foot-pounds produced by the 99-grain .380 ACP HST load. The same 30 Super Carry load penetrates 15.5 inches

through a heavy clothing barrier into gel versus 14.5 inches for the 9mm HST load and 9.95 inches for the .380 HST bullet. Federal and its sister companies are already offering no fewer than six different 30 Super Carry loads for target shooting and defense. The target loads currently offered include Federal American Eagle 100-grain FMJ (1,250 fps), CCI Blazer 100-grain FMJ (1,150 fps), and Remington UMC 100-grain FMJ (1,250 fps). Defensive loads include Federal Premium HST 100-grain (1,250 fps), Speer 115-grain Gold Dot (1,150 fps), and Remington 100-grain HTP (1,230 fps). Nighthawk is offering its President and GRP 1911 pistols chambered in 30 Super Carry, both of which will have a magazine capacity of 12 rounds. Smith & Wesson is also offering two new 30 Super Carry pistols: the M&P30 Shield Plus and the M&P 30 Shield EZ. Both hold two

WITH ... created for a hunting trip, but it quickly became an obsession to provide wingshooters with topperforming ammunition. APEX Ammunition soon pioneered the commercial application of ultra-high-density Tungsten Super Shot to create hard-hitting, accurate shot loads. The driving principle behind the company’s continued quest for innovation and better performance is its deep commitment to delivering a hunting experience like no other.

SHOT Daily: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next five years?

Jason Lonsberry: As an industry, we need

to assist and help educate the millions of new gun owners while continuing to serve experienced hunters and shooters with excellent customer service and innovative products and programs, all while keeping up with the unprecedented demand for ammunition. For APEX, growing our brand recognition, market share, and production capacity while continuing to handcraft our premium Tungsten Super Shot (TSS) loads will be the key to success in the years ahead. Our goal has always been to deliver the ultimate hunting experience for our customers—and that drives us every day.

ason Lonsberry launched Mississippi-based APEX Ammunition in 2017 with two hunting buddies, Jared Lewis and Nick Charney. Lewis is now COO, and Charney, who is still on active duty in the Air Force, handles sales. (Lewis is also a veteran of the U.S. military, and their wives are Air Force pilots.) present a tremendous opportunity for us. Engaging and educating these new hunters in meaningful ways is critical. Doing so also provides intrinsic value to any brand. Education is key on so many levels. First, we need to make sure these new hunters know how to hunt safely. Second, we need to impart the importance of practice in order to hone one’s shooting skills. In the case of hunters, that means helping them learn the ways in which they can improve their chances of making clean shots. With wingshooters, we emphasize that the choice of load can make the difference between clean, quick kills and wounding birds.

SD: When you get up in the morning, what gets you excited about working in the industry? jl: Besides getting up before shooting light,

which I enjoy, it’s the excitement of bringing tangible value to APEX and our customers. We are constantly experimenting and innovating with performance and customer experience in mind. The daily victories, challenges and opportunities that we encounter keep me coming back for more.

SD: How will you meet the expectations of your customers? jl: APEX was built on the foundation of customer experience, and by that, I mean customer service and incredibly effective shotgun loads. For example, we design our handloaded TSS line for superior patterning and knockdown power as well as consistent performance. To ensure that these objectives are achieved, we have created a system to guarantee that each shell that leaves our facility has gone through proper component selection and quality assurance. As for customer service, our team is on the phone through the entire business day answering questions, taking orders and listening to the hunting stories our customers share with us. SD: Creating a successful business from scratch is hard work. What was your motivation to start APEX Ammunition? jl: We felt there was a huge hole to fill, both in product and in customer service. Before we started producing TSS loads for the commercial market, there was no clear top-performing shotshell for wingshooters. As more and more hunters are learning, tungsten is the gold standard for hardhitting loads. It is significantly denser than steel, lead and bismuth. We also saw an opportunity to handload to such precision that we could produce superior patterning. We also felt customer service in our space was severely lacking. We set out to do that better than the competition. SD: Please explain the Small Batch Series. How does a customer order this ammo? jl: Similar to the traditions of small-batch handcrafted whiskeys, we run a “Small Batch” of certain

shot sizes or combinations of shot in a very limited run. Under our Small Batch line, we also offer a Private Label that allows the customer to select their preferred gauge, shell length and shot sizes. They can customize their own shell (under the safety guidelines we provide), and they receive their shells in a handwritten custom box with their name and shell recipe on it.

shooting round while getting as many pellets downrange as possible to maximize the harvest. So, our team set out to make speed and pattern density meet in a certain way to create our deadly Upland and Waterfowl ammo. Our Turkey Ninja line is another great example; we tested and perfected the 8.5 shot load for a year before introducing it to our customers.

SD: What properties differentiate your product from the mass-market products available from larger manufacturers?

SD: How has the military experience you and your

jl: One word: handmade. The process of our

meticulously handcrafted shells is the secret to producing what we believe are the best TSS shells on the market today. When using Tungsten Super Shot (instead of blended or steel shot), handloading is the only way to ensure that every shell that leaves APEX is within the tolerances we require and our customers expect.

partners have contributed to the company’s success?

jl: Adaptability and overcoming adversity is the first and foremost experience that is synonymous with the military and APEX. The veterans who work with us bring the experience of working within a chain of command, and there is a level of discipline that is ingrained in our team that keeps us moving forward. Booth #71104. SD: You say your turkey load delivers the best patterns of any ammo now on the market. How did you do this? jl: By conducting a tremendous amount of

testing and research. We have put a lot of TSS into our backstop, adjusting our shell recipe for maximum consistency and performance.

SD: You’ve said, “Our enduring commitment to design, test, evaluate and introduce new ideas that better capture the experience is the driving force of our continuing innovation.” Can you provide an example of how this commitment led to a specific product? jl: Our TSS Waterfowl and Upland lines are a great example of this. uring the second year of Covid 19, high demand for footwear outpaced production as limited space at western port facilities reigned. Compared

to the U.S. and some Asian countries, European factories struggled with intermittent closures. On the manufacturing side, obtaining raw materials was a challenging task across the category. Although demand was high throughout the segment, retailers were hampered by inventory selection. But the coming year promises increased retail traffic as consumers continue to set records for spending time outside. Meanwhile, they’ll be searching for what’s new on your shelves. Here’s a look at some of what they may find.

Wildland firefighters subject themselves to one of the most physically demanding jobs in the world. Certified NFPA 1977-2016 for wildland firefighting, the Missoula 2.1 women's firefighting boots are up to that task. The tough European split bull leather is water-resistant, hydrophobic, and breathable. The Missoula 2.1’s lighter weight helps alleviate leg fatigue while on long hikes. The newly designed, heat-resistant (up to 572 degrees F.) Vibram anti-slip sole offers greater footholds across dynamically different terrain. The special heel design offers strong footholds on steep and uneven surfaces. In addition, the sturdy and stable midsole ensures shock protection. A built-in bootjack at the boot’s rear makes it easier to remove after a long day. The two-zone lacing system allows separate tension adjustment for the upper and the lower parts of the boot. For downward descents, tighten the upper and the lowers evenly. For upward ascents, leave the upper a little looser to prevent shin constriction. The two-zone lacing aids in preventing potential ankle injuries out on the line. The new roller-ball eyelets on the lower part of the lacing system offer minimal friction, reducing wear and tear on the flame-resistant Nomex laces. Women’s sizing includes half, narrow, medium and wide widths from 5 to 10. SRP: $325. Booth #20571 (haixusa.com)

KENETREK

When some hunters hear the words “light hiker,” all they can think of is “under performance.” Not in this case. Weighing in at only 3.2 pounds per pair, the Corrie Hiker is built for long, arduous hauls while delivering excellent agility and control. The word “Corrie” is Scottish and means “a half-open steep-sided hollow on a mountainside.” Its Grapon outsoles delivers excellent traction, and the K-Straps tie the base of the heel to the seven-inch, double- and triple-stitched padded upper, providing complete comfort and control. The Corrie boasts a waterproof and breathable Windtex membrane with a 5mm full-length nylon midsole and a reinforced toe and heel atop Kenetrek’s supportive footbed. This 7-inch-tall light hiker becomes a serious tool for those who trek the high ground for elk and deer. Sizes are 5 to 13 (half-sizes are 5.5 to 11.5) in medium and wide widths. SRP: $300. Combining high-quality, scent-free rubber with naturally insulating neoprene, the LaCrosse Alpha Burly Pro is a staple among seasoned hunters. This year, LaCrosse has added a solid brown option to this popular family of rubber boots. It features hand-laid premium rubber over a 3.5mm neoprene core for flexible, waterproof, scent-free comfort. The embossed liner increases air circulation inside the boot and wicks moisture, making them quick to dry. In addition, an adjustable neoprene gusset helps with easy on and off. Available in non-insulated and insulated versions with 1,600 grams of Thinsulate Ultra. Sizes are 6 to 15. SRP: $160-$190. Booth #15155 (lacrossefootwear.com)

Winchester Ammo Launches

arget shooting is one of the most popular and fastest-growing high school sports in the United States. This is not something a person hears every day, and neither is the fact that more than 60 million adults participate in the shooting sports each year, making it one of the most popular recreation activities in the country. Yet there are still

millions of individuals (young and old) who have never joined family and friends to participate in the variety of challenging shooting sports. That’s the impetus behind Shoot United, a dynamic initiative designed to promote all that’s wholesome and healthful about the shooting sports. It’s about time spent outdoors with family and friends; it’s about competition; and it’s about one of the most enjoyable and safe recreational activities in the country.

“More people than ever before participate in target shooting and hunting,” says Brett Flaugher, president of Winchester Ammunition. “These sports are fun and appealing, and people need to hear the stories of how these activities have a positive impact on our lives and relationships. That’s what we plan to do. We’re going to share these stories with an even broader audience and continue to nurture a diverse participation.” Throughout 2022 and 2023, engaging content will be shared nationwide through mainstream

media. Shoot United will also release content through its own digital and social platforms. The content is meant to entertain and inform and to foster a healthy and transparent dialogue. Grassroots events will be coordinated throughout the U.S., with the mission to drive awareness and introduce new participants to the sport. “Shoot United will be inclusive,” says Flaugher. “We want to bring shooting and responsible firearm ownership to as wide a variety of people as possible from all walks of life. We are committed to echoing these positive messages beyond our core audience and welcoming new people in. Winchester is wholly committed to this initiative, and we have high expectations that it will bring new energy and excitement to the shooting sports. As a world leader in delivering innovative products, Winchester is a brand built on integrity, hard work and a deep focus on its loyal customers. Shoot United is another example of our industry leadership.” To a newcomer, gaining shooting experience can seem to be an intimidating ordeal. Shoot United seeks to make the process a whole lot easier through a series of videos that can be found at shootunited.com. Topics include “The Four Rules of Firearm Safety” and “Common Practices,” the latter of which gives basic advice on how to conduct yourself at a shooting range. For instance, the video explains the meaning of the terms “going hot” and “going cold” that will be heard at a range — and how a shooter must react when they hear them. The videos are free of jargon that only experienced shooters will understand and are short, touching on the salient points quickly in an entertaining fashion. Booth #11828

Grassroots events will be coordinated throughout the United States for people to join, with the mission to drive awareness and introduce new participants to the sport.

GUNS 2022

by Eve Flanigan

The unprecedented demand for firearms over the past two years has strained manufacturing capacity. Nevertheless, in 2022 retailers will see new models.

I

f there’s a term that can describe the industry’s focus in the past year, it’s “supply chain issues.” These range from the availability and cost of raw materials and parts to building sufficient firearms to maintain inventory at the retail level. That’s one reason retailers saw so few new products released in 2021. It’s difficult to stop or reduce production of core products to begin production of a new firearm when demand is so high for existing products. But in 2022, retailers will begin to see more new models hit the market. Many of these will be line extensions, but there are a few surprises that should whet the appetite of your customers. Here are some of the highlights.

RIFLES BROWNING

Browning is introducing two new line extensions of its popular X-Bolt Series. The X-Bolt Mountain Pro sports a carbon-fiber barrel that lightens the package. The barrel includes a muzzle brake and thread protector. Weather resistance is given consideration via the stainless-steel receiver, available in two Cerakote finishes. It also has a Picatinny rail for a bipod. SRP: $2,479.99-2,499.99. The X-Bolt Speed gets the company’s OVIX camo with bronze Cerakote finish. Its fluted, sporter-contour barrel is threaded. Browning includes both a thread protector and a muzzle brake with purchase. SRP: $1,339.99-1,379.99. Booth #10938 (browning.com)

BUSHMASTER

The Bushmaster 450 is a gas-driven carbine. As the name implies, it’s chambered for the company’s straight-walled namesake big-game cartridge. The Bushmaster 450 has an A2-style stock and grip, 14-inch free-floating BFI rail, and M-Lok handguard. A Snake Charmer muzzle brake is included to tame recoil. The trigger is a two-stage DM2S. It ships with a five-round aluminum magazine. SRP: $1,329.99. Booth #20341 (bushmaster.com)

CADEX DEFENSE

Cadex Defense is a chassis-gun manufacturer based in Quebec. Its U.S. civilian market headquarters is in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2022 it will offer new additions to its family of long-range precision rifles. The CDX-SS Seven S.T.A.R.S. (Sport and Tactical Application Rifle System) Pro is designed for precision-match competitors. As such, it features a skeletonized stock with almost unlimited adjustability, a 16-inch Bartlein barrel, a futuristic-looking receiver equipped with an adjustable magazine catch, and numerous other upscale features. Several brilliant Cerakote finishes will be offered. Chamberings will include .223 Rem., 6BR, 6 DASHER, 6 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x47 Lapua and .308 Win. Booth #70423 (cadexdefense.com)

CZ-USA

The new 600 Series of rifles includes four models, covering a wide range of stock materials, barrel profiles, action lengths and cartridge combinations. User-friendly options include an adjustable trigger, 60-degree bolt throw, and the ability to swap caliber without a gunsmith, using an optional conversion kit. Since reliability was a vital consideration, CZ selected the controlled-round feed design for cycling consistency. A quiet, two-position safety complements this action. The 60-degree bolt throw increases clearance between the bolt and optic, allowing for larger scopes. In addition, it cycles considerably faster than traditional designs. All models use an oversized bolt knob for improved control with gloved hands. There are four models: Alpha, Lux, Range and Trail. The Alpha has an aluminum receiver and black soft-touch synthetic stock. Chamberings range from .223 Rem. to .300 Win Mag. Classic wood furniture dresses up the Lux. It includes a steel receiver, wooden stock with Schnabel tip, and an oversized wooden bolt knob. The Lux is chambered for four popular hunting cartridges from .223 Rem. to .300 Win. Mag. The Range model features a steel receiver, heavy barrel and laminate wood stock with a toolless height-adjustable cheekpiece and is chambered in .308 Win and 6mm. The Trail is a super-lightweight rifle built with an aluminum receiver, polymer chassis and aluminum forend with an M-Lock interface. The Trail is chambered in .223 Rem or 7.62x39 and uses AR-15 or Bren 2 magazines. It also features familiar AR-15 controls (safety and mag release). SRP: $749-1,119. Booth #12654 (cz-usa.com)

HECKLER & KOCH

H&K may just have the year’s most notable fun-first entry with a rifle variant of its venerable MP5 — chambered in .22LR. The guns are made in partnership with Umarex of Germany and distributed via HK’s USA headquarters. The MP5 22 sports a barrel sleeve to lend the classic MP5SD look, sans the expense and recoil of the original submachine gun. It’s also suppressor-ready. SRP: $479. Booth #12227 (hk-usa.com)

NOSLER

The new Model 21 is a feature-rich production firearm that has the feel and performance of a custom build. The heart of the rifle is a new Model 21 action, which has been designed in collaboration with Mack Brothers, a South Dakota shop with a growing reputation for building some of the finest rifle actions in the industry, including their popular EVO action. The Model 21 blends the best features of the EVO with unique Nosler-engineered customizations, delivering a solid foundation for peak performance right out of the box. Another key feature is a spiral, fluted, one-piece nitride-coated bolt made of 4340 chrome-moly steel. In addition to a sleek look and nearly effortless functioning, the fluted design provides a reduction in weight and helps to channel debris, preventing the bolt from jamming in environments where dirt and sand are an issue. In line with the M21 action’s practical design philosophy, the bolt’s upgraded M16-style extractor and fire-control group feature tool-less takedown. Top-of-the-line components that round out the Model 21 rifle include a crisp, single-stage TriggerTech Field model trigger (user-adjustable to a pull weight of 2.5 to 5 pounds) and top safety. A Shilen match-grade barrel with a threaded muzzle is hand lapped for the ultimate in bore smoothness, and the lightweight synthetic carbon-fiber stock shaves weight off the complete build while providing extreme durability. Popular chamberings will include 22 Nosler, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 26 Nosler, 27 Nosler, .280 Ackley Improved, 28 Nosler, .308 Win., .300 Win. Mag., 30 Nosler, 33 Nosler and .375 H&H. SRP: $2,495. MOSSBERG

Mossberg shakes things up this year with the addition of two new pump-action 590S models, based on its established 500 tactical series. The new 12-gauge defense guns are ground-breaking in that they’re capable of cycling 1.75-, 2.75-, and 3-inch shotshells interchangeably, in any combination, without the use of an adapter. The series includes two full-length stock options and two versions of the bird’s-head-gripped Shockwave. The full-length 590S has an 18.5-inch barrel with a front bead sight and corncob forend. The 20-inch version has an adjustable ghost-ring sight, AccuChoke-compatible barrel, and M-Lok forend. SRP: $605-708. On the compact bird’s head-gripped Shockwave 590S, there’s a choice of 14.3- or 18.5inch barrel length. It has a front bead sight and a strapped, corncob-style forend. SRP: $605. Capacity on any 590S ranges from 4+1 to 12+1, depending on barrel length and shell size. Overall lengths range from 30.75 to 41 inches. On the waterfowl side of the Mossberg house are two new guns that borrow from the company’s 940 JM Pro shotguns. The 940 Pro Waterfowl series has a base-model 12 gauge with a 28-inch vent-rib barrel, Hi-Viz TriComp fiber-optic front sight (with interchangeable triangular and round LitePipes), and an AccuChoke-compatible X-Factor ported choke tube. Metal surfaces are finished with brown Cerakote to complement a TrueTimber Prairie camo stock and forend. It also has aggressive texturing on the forend and stock, sling-swivel studs, a drilled-and-tapped receiver and an ambidextrous safety. Capacity is five rounds. SRP: $1,050. The Snow Goose edition of the 940 Pro Waterfowl line also has a 28-inch barrel and an extended magazine tube that holds up to 12 23⁄4-inch shells. It has an extended X-Factor ported choke tube that’s compatible with other AccuChoke tubes. There are two available barrel finishes: Battleship Gray Cerakote and Viper Snow camouflage. SRP: $1,120. SAVAGE ARMS

Savage is adding a personal-defense model to the Renegauge line. The Renegauge Security is a 12 gauge that, like others in the line, uses the Dual Regulating Inline Valve (D.R.I.V.) system to ensure reliable cycling of shells from 23⁄4 inches to 3-inch magnums with no gas adjustments required. Barrel length is 18.5 inches, and magazine capacity is six. Oversized controls help function in low-light conditions, and length of pull, comb height, heel/toe drop and pitch can all be changed to suit the needs of individual users. SRP: $1,499. Like many other recent releases, this one has a long slide over a 4.5inch barrel and is marketed as a competition gun. It has a black anodized finish, and the low bore axis, fairly straight grip angle, integral beavertail and large lightening cuts of the STK 100 make for a flatshooting platform. SRP: $599. SAR USA

The American subsidiary of longtime Turkish weapons manufacturer Sarsilmaz, SAR USA, is releasing the SAR9 Compact. As the name implies, this is a compact version of the company’s popular full-size SAR9 pistol, chambered in 9mm Luger. The striker-fired, polymerframe gun ships with 15-round magazines (10-round mags are offered for restrictive jurisdictions). Three choices of interchangeable backstrap/side panels are included. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY

Springfield Armory has one of the season’s biggest surprises. The SA-35 is a new, more modern interpretation of John Browning’s acclaimed Hi Power design. This version retains the iconic wood-and-steel appearance of the original, but capacity is now more robust, at 15 rounds of 9mm. It boasts a factory-tuned trigger, a reconfigured hammer that’s less likely to “bite,” modern sights, an extended slide safety, and beveled magazine well. The gun also has checkered walnut grips for a classic appearance. SRP: $699. Also new are optics-ready variants of the subcompact XD-S Mod.2. With “OSP” added to the name, the new models are chambered in 9mm and .45 ACP. A pre-milled slide accommodates a Crimson Trace micro red-dot sight. Both have the grip safety and ambidextrous magazine release featured on other guns in the XD Mod.2 line. The .45 ACP model has a 3.3-inch barrel; the 9mm has a 4-inch barrel. Two magazines are included: one flush-fit and one extended. Capacity is 7+1, 9+1 for the 9mm. In .45 ACP, the mags hold five or six rounds. SRP: $425-550, depending on chambering and optic option. Booth #70443 (springfield-armory.com)

SMITH & WESSON

Smith & Wesson is adding a 10mm model to its M&P M2.0 line. Features include a new flat-face trigger design as well as an optics cut slide with the C.O.R.E. system that enables users to mount a variety of popular optics. The 10mm will be available with or without an ambidextrous manual thumb safety, four interchangeable palm-swell grip inserts, and enhanced grip texture to help manage recoil. Smith & Wesson will also offer a shorter 4-inch configuration to allow for quicker clearance of a holster and a slightly longer 4.6-inch configuration to provide for a longer sight radius. The handgun has a 15+1 capacity and ships with two magazines. SRP: $654-$665. Also new for 2022, the CSX Metal Micro 9mm features 12+1 capacity. A hammerfired design with a 3.1-inch barrel and an overall length of 6.1 inches, the CSX also has a flat-faced trigger with an integrated safety that provides a smooth, crisp single-action trigger squeeze. The new Shield Plus 30 Super Carry and the Shield EZ 30 Super Carry take advantage of Federal’s new 30 Super Carry ammo. With the new 30 Super Carry round, both platforms gain an additional two rounds of capacity while maintaining the same performance of the 9mm. Booth #12427 (smith-wesson.com)

TAURUS USA

Taurus' most popular personal-defense revolver, the 856, will now be chambered for the .327 Federal. The .327 Federal Magnum is one of the “dark horse” cartridges in the personal defense world. Based on a lengthened .32 H&R Magnum cartridge case, the .327 Federal Magnum exceeds the performance of its parent cartridge with velocity pushing toward the .357 Magnum range without the heavy perceived recoil pulse. The new Taurus 327 is a double-action/single-action, two-inch-barrel firearm that is multi-cartridge compatible, able to accept .32 H&R Magnum and .32 S&W Long cartridges. The matte-black carbon-steel or stainless-steel barrel, cylinder and frame are backed by a recoil-absorbing, comfortable rubber grip that provides excellent retention in a compact handgun platform. The Taurus 327’s front, serrated ramp sight and no-snag rear sight channel provide quick and clear target acquisition supported by consistent accuracy. SRP: $371.05, black; $388.32, stainless. n 1998, as a growing number of states enacted concealed-carry legislation, Joe Roebuck recognized increased demand for a safe, simple-to-use, affordable firearm. He was ideally situated to do this, as he had more than four decades of experience in the manufacturing industry. So,

he applied his skills and ingenuity as a tool and die maker and mechanical design engineer to create the CPX series of 9mm and .380 firearms. In 2003, Roebuck founded Skyy Industries, LLC, (now known as SCCY Industries, LLC), to produce the innovative CPX line. The company’s first offices and manufacturing facilities were located in South Daytona, Florida. In February 2010, it relocated to its present 21,000-square-foot

facility in Daytona Beach, just a half-mile from the famous Daytona International Speedway. Contained in SCCY’s new factory are numerous state-of-the-art CNC machining centers of various types, all of which use custom tooling and programs designed by Roebuck. The barrel, slide, receiver and all other major metal components of SCCY’s firearm lines are manufactured at this facility.

SHOT Business: What was your vision for starting the company? Joe Roebuck: As I studied the handgun market, I saw there were three segmented levels of product: bottom, middle, and upper, running

 Joe Roebuck, CEO of SCCY Industries, believed the market needed a high-quality but reasonably priced concealed-carry handgun. That was the impetus for the CPX series.

from the least expensive to the most expensive, respectively. My research told me there was a need for a high-quality, cost-effective semi-automatic handgun. So, I put my talents to work and achieved my vision — SCCY Firearms.

Sb: You’ve referred to SCCY as “The King of Concealed Carry.” Why is that?

JR: A writer coined that phrase after test-firing

our CPX series of handguns. He was amazed at the level of quality versus the price. I believe our products deliver the best price point/quality ratio on the market. All SCCY handguns are fully machined from 100-percent billet using premium American-made materials. As a tool and die maker and mechanical design engineer, I frown on using castings and metal injection-molded parts for critical components. Machining from billet or forging is the way to go.

Want faster target acquisition and low-light performance? The DVG-1RD comes factory equipped with a Crimson Trace CTS-1500 red-dot optic.

Sb: The company was launched with the intro-

duction of the CPX, of which there are now four versions. What are the distinguishing characteristics of this gun?

JR: The CPX-1 is a 9mm double-action-only with an ambidextrous safety. The CPX-2 is also a 9mm double-action-only, but in this case, it has no safety. The CPX-3 is a .380 double-action-only with no safety. The CPX-4 is a .380 double-action-only with an ambidextrous safety. The CPX-3 and CPX-4 also feature the new Roebuck Quad Lock system. This is a design that fully locks up the barrel to the slide. It’s similar to what you see in plumbing with tapered male and female fittings. Using the Roebuck Quad Lock system provides an efficient barrel-slide lockup at a lower cost.

Sb: Upon launching the company, you

obviously saw a market for your product.

When dealers first saw the CPX, they w e r e i n i t i a l ly s k e p t i c a l . How was the CPX first received by dealers and consumers?

Sb: Your latest launch is the striker-fired DVG-1.

JR: When dealers first saw the CPX, they were

JR: The CPX series has a double-action-only fir-

initially skeptical because it was priced slightly higher than the lower segment (zinc-diecast handguns) then on the market. However, after receiving it, taking it apart, and then test-firing it, they were bowled over with the quality of materials and workmanship. I was told by many dealers that I had a winner on my hands.

How is this series different from the CPX?

ing system with a long, stiff trigger pull—a nonstacking nine pounds. The DVG series is a striker-fired system with a shorter and lighter trigger pull of 5.5 pounds.

Sb: What is the advantage of the DVG-1’s straight trigger?

JR: The straight-trigger design offers the shoot-

er more freedom of finger placement. That’s because a trigger with a radius can force the shooter’s finger into one location due to its curvature. Shooters tend to find the straight-trigger design somewhat more comfortable.

Sb: The company says it is committed to pro-

ducing cost-effective and precisely manufactured concealed-carry handguns. How do you do this? Is it an advantage in manufacturing processes, design elements, or other forms of cost control?

JR: Several factors go into achieving this. It

starts with a cost-effective design. My background as a class “A” tool and die maker and mechanical design engineer is a key element. During the product-design phase, I’m concurrently considering tooling design. I have passed this method down to my engineering staff. Another cost-saving factor is that we make much of our tooling in house. Due to our unique tooling design and machining processes, we can achieve shorter machine-cycle times. We use top-brand machining, manufacturing, and quality-control equipment while using all of our own custom programing. Our motto is: “SCCY is the presence of talent and technology with the absence of greed.” By fusing all these dynamics together, we’re able to meet our objective of offering a high-quality firearm at a cost-effective price.

 The DVG-1 is SCCY's first strikerfired design.

Sb: How do you continue to meet the expecta-

tions of your customers — both dealers and consumers?

JR: Our marketing department keeps their ears To assure high quality, all SCCY handguns are machined from 100-percent billet using premium American-made materials.

to the tracks. At times we reach out to both dealers and retail customers and gather their thoughts. After compiling this data and filtering it to the most commonly expressed desires, new ideas and products are developed.

AMERICAN TREASURES

TRUE GRIT

Cimarron’s Hollywood Gun collection is a dream come true for fans of Western movies. It includes a wide range of replica guns, such as John Wayne’s Rooster Shooter (True Grit) and the Wyatt Earp Buntline pistol (Tombstone). You name the movie — Fist Full of Dollars, Wild Bunch, 3:10 to Yuma, or Quigley Down Under — and Cimarron can offer customers a piece of cinematic history to own and shoot. “Pale Rider must have come on TV a lot last year, because I got it in my mind that Cimarron really needed to offer a dual-cylinder Model 1858,” says Harvey. Cimarron calls this model The Preacher. My favorite Cimarron Hollywood gun is the Man with No Name 1851 Navy Conversion, which is a replica of the gun used by Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It’s complete with the silver inlaid rattlesnake in the grip. I might just need to complete the set with the Tuco Special, an 1860 Army Conversion, and Angel Eyes, an 1858 Conversion. “At Cimarron we take a lot of shots at new products,” says Harvey. “Not all are blockbusters, but we really like what we do and enjoy coming up with new things that we would want to own.” Hits far outnumber duds, and Cimarron’s catalog continues to grow. Just recently the company launched the Lonesome Dove Walker revolvers in .44, honoring Larry McMurtry’s best-selling Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel about the end of the Old West.

Cimarron’s customer base is more varied than you might expect and includes SASS competitors, Old West enthusiasts and hunters. (SASS is the acronym for the Single Action Shooting Society, the governing body for Cowboy Action events.) “Cimarron has been lucky to be involved with SASS since it began,” says Harvey. “We helped the sport to grow, supporting the sport as one of its main sponsors. Old West enthusiasts, historians, and collectors enjoy Cimarron’s authenticity and unique products.” I do, too. I’ve hunted with a Model 1873 Deluxe Sporting Rifle in .44 WCR. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly rifle. This ’73 has brought back the tradition and challenge to me. It’s also comforting to know the quality of this firearm. I can use the rifle to hunt for the rest of my life and then pass it on to my son. If you have customers who are SASS competitors or buyers who simply appreciate a fine-tuned revolver, make sure they know about Cimarron’s Competition SAA revolvers. These guns feature fine details, like a wide square-notch rear sight for fast target acquisition, slimmer checkered grip for a better hold, a wide, low hammer for faster shooting, and a tuned action that is smoother so the trigger has no creep and is consistently crisp.

Customization is another aspect of Cimarron’s business proposition. A variety of available finishes and laser engraving allows your customer to create a

one-of-a-kind gun that reflects their personality. If you want a six-gun worthy of being a BBQ Gun (a term from the old Southwest for a gun that is not worn daily), Cimarron has got you covered. Most of Cimarron’s dealers get 3 percent off when they buy three guns. If you move more Cimarron product, the incentives get better. Like any successful brand, Cimarron wants to better understand their customers in order to meet their needs. Customer service representatives track where customers hear about the brand, resolve any issues they may be experiencing with the website or products, and determine which products people are ordering that may be out of stock. It is a constant cycle of learning and responding. And yes, as much as Cimarron is rooted in the late 19th century, the company participates in social media and chat rooms. Even though Mike Harvey is now 77 years old, he still can be found every day at the office (now located in Fredericksburg in the heart of the Texas Hill Country). His daughter, Jamie, and her husband, Bryce, have been helping run the business for the last few years, and they intend to keep to the pace that has been set by Mike and Mary Lou Harvey. And that pace is fostered by Mike Harvey’s love of history, hunting, shooting sports and Western movies, all of which guide Cimarron’s every effort. The end result is a product people want to not only own, but treasure. Booth #10933 (cimarron-firearms.com)

6 WALKER’S ATACS SPORT EARBUDS Increasingly, professional shooters, recreational shooters and hunters are favoring the comfort and digital control of earbud-style sound-management systems to protect their hearing and to amplify and discern ambient sound. Although earbuds perform these tasks admirably, fitment and security can vary between shooters — especially during high-activity, high-mobility scenarios such as competition shooting and hunting. The all-new ATACS Sport Earbuds from Walker’s address these challenges by incorporating a dual-retention system into a sophisticated and ergonomic platform. Since shooters come in all shapes and sizes, Walker’s engineers set out to develop an earbud system that would work for everyone. They did this by incorporating soft and flexible ear hooks and a behind-the-neck retention strap into a freshly designed earbud chassis. This unitized retention system, combined with multi-sized foam ear tips, means the ATACS Sport Earbuds are comfortable to wear under any condition and will remain in place even during high-mobility activities. Beyond the comfort and ergonomic features, the ATACS Sport Earbuds include the latest in sound-suppression/enhancement technology and operational control. Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, for example, pairs the ATACS Sport Earbuds to your phone via the Walker’s LINK 2.0 app, providing remote control of the listening mode settings (universal, clear voice, power boost and high-frequency boost) as well as auto shutoff times (off, two, four and six hours), volume control, battery level, ambient mute and social media links. The new ATACS Sport Earbuds come with three different-size foam ear tips and a USB-C charging cable to deliver up to 7.5 hours of battery life per charge. Booth #12669 (gsmoutdoors.com)
