It’s Personal Always has been…always will be

I

t’s January, so it must be time for our annual survey of new firearms, which you will find on page 40. This is vital reading for a firearms retailer, but I’d also like to direct your attention to a pair of smaller—but no less important—items that you might overlook. The first is “The Odd Couple” (page 7), which details the incredible success of Levy’s Leathers.

The Canadian company, founded in 1973, makes guitar straps and rifle slings—an odd combo at first blush, but the duo makes sense when you consider each is made with the same machinery and the same attention to detail. Levy’s has a curious history, as it was founded

by Dennis Levy, a self-described hippie who wanted to produce leather goods—belts, floppy hats, wide watchbands, and other required accoutrements—for welldressed members of the counterculture.

When I talked to the founder recently, he told me, “Our success is due to two simple principles: hard work and an unwavering respect for the customer.”

Now let’s go to Elizabethtown, North Carolina, where we encounter Del-Ton Incorporated. (You’ll find “The Del-Ton Dream” on page 8.) The brainchild of Tony Autry, it stems from a singular American dream: Although Autry was employed by the telecommunications industry, he longed for something far more meaningful to do.

He liked the modularity and simplicity of the modern sporting rifle, so in his spare time he began selling parts via the Internet. Very quickly, the business expanded. In short order, he recruited his wife and father. They bought a building, then another. They moved past parts to complete assemblies, and then moved the business again to an even larger building.

Obviously, Autry was giving his customers the products they wanted. But when I talked to him, he said the key move was hiring his mother to work the phones. The

focus on customer service reaped a big dividend. “By being more available by phone, and thus, more responsive, we got the best feedback you can get from customers— increased sales,” he said.

retailer’s phone system. I knew that if I could only connect with a real, live human being, I could resolve my issue in less than a minute.

Instead, I got menu after menu, every one of which led to an infuriating dead end.

Del-Ton and Levy’s Leathers, however, have never forgotten that the customer comes first. Yes, you must be able to deliver a quality product. But that old-fashioned person-to-person relationship still rules the roost.

Carl Zeiss Sports Optics has hired Murski Breeding Sales (MBS) as its sales agency for the South and Southeast. This is the latest move by Zeiss as it continues to execute an aggressive growth strategy that started last year.

Team Remington/ Bushmaster Win Big in Arizona

The Odd Couple

Levy’s Leathers , makers of guitar straps and rifle slings, is still going strong after almost 40 years

I

n the mid-1970s, leather and polyester were fighting tooth and nail for the hearts and minds of a generation that believed it was destined to change the world. As Dennis Levy, founder of the company that now bears his name, says, “It was a time when longhaired hippies roamed free, and the elite of the counter-culture preferred to be festooned in leather adornments: leather belts, leather barrettes, floppy leather hats, wide leather watchbands, leather pouches and purses.”

So, drawn by the siren call of the times, Levy went to Nova Scotia in 1973 with two hundred dollars’ (Canadian) worth of leather-working tools and set up a shop, fittingly, between a tavern and a healthfood store. He called it Levy’s Handcrafts Limited.

These days, Levy’s Leathers Limited, which employs 200 people in two state-ofthe-art facilities in Manitoba and Nova Scotia, focuses on two key—but seemingly different—areas: guitar straps and gun slings. An odd pair, perhaps, but a niche market that assures the company continued success.

“Getting from watchbands to guitar straps and rifle slings had more twists and turns than your average clairvoyant could anticipate,” Levy says. “But our mission was to create a profitable company. Our success is due to adherence to two simple principles: hard work and an unwavering respect for the customer.” To that end, he says, “As employees, we all work together to make sure that if you need guitar straps in Hong Kong by Friday, or gun slings in Peoria by Tuesday next, we’ll jump through the necessary hoops required to make sure they get there.

Levy says the first thing consumers will notice about his products is the quality of the leather. “Whether it’s top-grain vegetable-tanned carving leather or plushnap suede, we use only the best available hides. Look closely and you’ll notice that the workmanship is also first rate.”

All of this raises the question, just what is the appeal of a leather sling?

Function? Fashion? A little of both?

“Foremost in our minds when designing a sling is function,” Levy says. “Will it hold up in the rugged outdoor conditions that hunters find themselves in?” He adds, “‘Fashion’ may not be quite the right word, but a rifle is a beautiful marriage of craft and art, and it is important to design a sling that complements the gun.” (800-565-0203; levysleathers.com) —Slaton L. The Del-Ton Dream

T

ony Autry had a dream. Was there any profit in selling firearmsrelated goods on the Internet? “I always enjoyed playing around with guns, and I especially liked the modularity and simplicity of the modern sporting rifle platform,” he says. So, in 2000, he began selling various items on eBay—spare parts, mainly. He experienced some success, but still kept his day job in telecommunications. But both he and his wife, Kassandra, wanted to strike out on their own.

In a few short years, Del-Ton has evolved from a firearms enthusiast’s spareparts business on eBay to a busy manufacturing and distribution company.

Though neither had any training in website design, they decided it was time to see if the dream could be realized. “We bought a book,” says Kassandra. Obviously they read it, because they managed to launch Del-Ton.com (Del, for Delmar, Tony’s father, who had joined the venture, and Ton, for Tony) and quickly found they were on to something. That same year they began buying upper assemblies, which Tony and Delmar built in their shop.

“I have no idea how many I built,” says Tony. “Over time, probably several hundred. I have always been mechanically inclined and detail minded, and I got pretty good at it.”

The following year, growing pains forced the Autrys to build a 1,000-square-foot steel building to accommodate the expanding business. Two years later, Tony’s mother, Betty, came on board to answer the phones.

“We saw a real increase in the business when Betty began answering the phones full-time,” says Kassandra. “It’s amazing how such a simple thing like this helped our business grow so much.”

That growth helped cement the importance of being customer-centric and making certain the customer is happy. “By being more available by phone, and thus, more responsive, we got the best feedback you can get from customers—increased sales,” says Tony.

In 2007, Del-Ton moved into a 4,500square-foot building in an industrial park in Elizabethtown, N.C. Del-Ton quickly outgrew that building, so in 2009, the Autrys moved the business into a 10,800-squarefoot building in the same industrial park.

And Del-Ton is leasing the 4,500-squarefoot structure back again as a stopgap measure until an additional building can be constructed some time this year.

The Del-Ton website now carries more than 1,600 products—a number, according to Tony, that is sure to expand.

“Our goals for 2012 are to increase sales to law enforcement, build our dealer network, and continue to improve our products and service to our customers,” he says. Sounds like a dream come true. (910645-2172; del-ton.com)

Gore Hits the Marsh W.L. Gore & Associates, the manufacturer behind Gore-Tex, announced that it has developed a new concealment pattern, Gore Optifade Concealment Marsh. The pattern is the third science-based Gore Optifade pattern, and the first to be optimized for hunting waterfowl. The pattern is available on gear from Beretta and Sitka, and will debut this month at the 2012 SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Gear will be available at retail for consumers in the summer of 2012.

“Our aim is to create the most scientifically advanced technologies to help hunters maximize their performance in the field and improve the outcome of their hunt,” said David Dillon, hunting category leader at Gore. “Gore Optifade is the only concealment technolo-

gy based on the science of animal vision, engagement distance, and angles of attack.

The Gore Optifade Marsh pattern takes into account the large, almost panoramic field of vision of most waterfowl.

Additionally, the contrasting pattern colors have been manipulated to create a great deal of depth.

Gore announced the development of Gore Optifade back in 2008. All Gore Optifade patterns incorporate a micro and a macro pattern. The micro pattern helps hunters blend with the environment, while the macro pattern disrupts the symmetry of the human shape, so the animal does not see the hunter as a predator.

Colt, Magpul Team Up Colt Defense is bringing to market its new LE6920MP, a rifle standard-equipped with many of Magpul’s most popular firearm accessories. Available to retailers now, this version of Colt’s top-selling LE6920 is available in a variety of color combinations, complete with a number of Magpul accessories.

This rifle is the first product Colt Defense and Magpul have developed together. “By combining Colt’s quality firearm with Magpul’s popular accessories and offering them together in one standard product, we are giving customers an option to save time and money,” says David

Green Laser From SSI Green lasers are more vivid from great distances.

Sight System Instruments (SSI) recently released its new Sight-Rite laser bore sighter. The company’s Green Laser Bore Sight is engineered for use on .17- to .50-caliber rifles and 10-, 12-, and 20-gauge shotguns.

The new green-laser technology in the bore sight projects a much brighter, concentrated beam compared to previous models, making it highly visible both indoors and outdoors. The improvements, according to the company, make the sight-in process much faster and easier for shooters.

SSI has made a name for itself by releasing a number of Sight-Rite laser bore sighters in a variety of calibers. The new Green Laser Bore Sight’s patented design prevents damage to the bore or the finish of a firearm during calibration. Additionally, the Sight-Rite laser bore sighter has incorporated a precise bore-alignment system that inhibits metal-on-metal contact.

The new Sight-Rite DX Kit includes a calibration target for aid in sighting in a firearm with greater accuracy, and the machined-aluminum construction makes the bore sight durable in extreme backcountry conditions.

LaserMax Launches New Series The CenterFire laser works with Ruger LC9 (pictured) and LCP pistols.

LaserMax announced the launch of the CenterFire laser series, as well as the debut of the first models designed specifically for the Ruger LCP and LC9. The CenterFire lasers can easily be installed by mounting to the frame without changing

parts or altering the exterior of the gun.

The 5mW CenterFire red laser for Ruger LCP and LC9 mounts just under the bore for highest accuracy and prevents the user from blocking the beam.

The CenterFire series lasers have a simple toggle-switch activation for right- and left-handed shooters. Like other LaserMax products, the exclusive ambidextrous, distinct on/off switch turns the laser on only when needed. (So it will not inadvertently reveal the user’s position in low light or darkness.) The CenterFire laser uses a 1/3N lithium battery that provides more than four hours of continuous runtime.

New Stealth Cam App Brings Field Info Home As more outdoors companies get on board with digital technology and see the sales benefits that can come with it, more are choosing to develop apps that give smart phone users brand-specific experiences. Scouting-camera company Stealth Cam is one of the latest companies to jump on the app bandwagon. It recently introduced its new Trail Camera Field App for iPhones and Androids.

The Trail Camera Field App is available through iTunes or the Android Market for $1.99. The app incorporates GPS mapping capability to track one’s location and mark camera locations, as well as mark other key elements such as water holes, treestands, camps, game trails, and rub and scrape lines. Users can

Rapid Growth of College Shooting Sports CSSI encourages student participation

H

ow do we accommodate the growing interest of young shooters who want to stay engaged in their sport as they head off to college? How do we educate and introduce college students who have never had the opportunity to experience the shooting sports? These questions resulted in the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s creation of the Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative (CSSI). Its primary goal is to grow the shooting sports at the college level, not only by retaining those who have been involved, but also by introducing new students and faculty.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, the NSSF has awarded close to $600,000 in grants to help start up new college shooting clubs while assisting existing clubs looking to expand or sustain their club activities. Sixty-five colleges submitted grant proposals in 2011, an increase of more than 30 percent compared to the previous year. Forty-three of these colleges received grants totaling $299,200. Ten of those grants are for new college club programs; the remaining 33 are for established college clubs, some of which had previously received CSSI grants.

This grant program’s success is visible in many ways. It motivates students and adults to take on leadership roles by serving as ambassadors for the shooting sports. These participants are taking the initiative to start new clubs, raise awareness on campus, introduce new people, and increase participation. Two years ago, coach David Dobson started programs at Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida—programs that are serving as models of success that other schools in Florida are adopting. As a result, University of Florida and Florida State University started new shooting clubs this past fall. One of Dobson’s graduates from Jacksonville University, now pursuing his master’s at the University of Florida, is serving as the club president of U.F.’s newly formed club program. The future is bright for college shotgun sports in the Sunshine State.

opportunity to target an untapped market.

Not only is working with local colleges great community relations, but it’s also a way to grow your business and the sport.

Ranges that have jumped on this opportunity are experiencing a fresh and enthusiastic influx of shooters. Students new to the shooting sports are expressing a strong interest and want to participate whenever possible. In some cases, ranges that have opened their doors to the local colleges are facing the welcome challenge of how to accommodate the number of students and or colleges interested in using their facility.

A great example of this is the Minute Man Sportsman’s Club in Burlington, Massachusetts, which has become the home club for Harvard, Harvard Law, Northeastern, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Tufts.

Another growing element within college shooting sports is intercollegiate events.

Colleges and shooting ranges are coming together to host competitions for schools in their region. This is not only creating new opportunities to keep students actively involved, but it’s also bringing shooting clubs together on a more regular basis.

While these students are shooting and competing, they also are making new friends and brainstorming ideas on how to take their programs to the next level.

During the fall of 2011, George Mason University held an intercollegiate event.

Some 114 competitors from 12 colleges, spanning from Vermont to Virginia, partic-

ipated. This event has more than doubled in size from when it began in 2009, and is now at full capacity. Organizers are looking at ways to accommodate more participants for future years, and may have to add another day to the event in order to do so.

It’s clear that the shooting sports at the college level are gaining momentum. Now is the time to see how you, your business, and/ or your home range can become part of this very exciting movement. How can you get involved with this effort? You can host a First Shots event for the students at a college or university near your home range. You can provide special offers on products your company produces or that you sell in your store.

Or you can serve as a volunteer coach/mentor for students looking to further structured programs or get them started. Time Capsule Marks NSSF’s 50th Anniversary Packing a time capsule culminated the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary.

The 1x2x3-foot compositematerial box (stamped “Open in 2061!”) is on display at the NSSF’s headquarters in Newtown, Conn. Its contents reflect the state of firearms ownership, target shooting, and hunting in the year 2011, and tell the story of how the NSSF, the firearms industry’s trade association, has helped promote, protect, and preserve those freedoms over the last half century.

“The Second Amendment, our industry, and our sports are in surprisingly good shape at this juncture,” said NSSF president and CEO Steve Sanetti. “It’s our great hope that things will be as good or better for us 50 years from now. Don’t Lie Promoted in times Square While tens of thousands of people huddled in New York City’s Times Square awaiting the arrival of the New Year, the giant 18x34-foot screen that is an icon of the tourist mecca flashed a message that read, “Buy a gun for someone who can’t and buy yourself 10 years in jail. Whatever you do…Don’t Lie for the Other Guy…dontlie.org.”

“Don’t Lie” is a cooperative program between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the NSSF. The effort was developed more than a decade ago to raise public awareness about the seriousness of the crime of purchasing a firearm for someone who cannot legally do so. The program

also helps the ATF educate firearms retailers so that they can be better prepared to detect and help deter potential straw purchases.

The Times Square message actually appeared from Oct. 15, 2011, through Jan. 1, 2012. More than 365,000 pedestrians walk through the area on any given day.

“Our goal was to raise awareness among New Yorkers and tourists coming into the city that there are serious consequences for illegally straw purchasing a firearm,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. “This warning can help deter an illegal purchase long before a person steps into a licensed retail store.”

First Shots Big City tour hits Miami, Sacramento Following a successful day of introductory shooting seminars in Madison, Wisconsin, and Chicago and environs, the NSSF’s First Shots Big City Tour has scheduled its next stops for March 3 in Miami, Florida, and Sacramento, California.

First Shots is the time-proven seminar for newcomers to shooting that teaches firearms safety fundamentals and ownership regulations in a classroom setting and follows up with a live-fire session on the range under the close supervision of expert instructors.

The program’s effectiveness has produced new, educated shooters and has been profitable for participating ranges. In fact, recent studies indicate that 43 percent of First Shots participants return to the host range five times in the first six months after the event.

The site allows anyone to search for a place to shoot in their area. Visitors simply enter their state or zip code, and a list of shooting ranges is created. Searches can be

further narrowed by selecting which shooting discipline you are interested in.

Survey Shows Strong Public Support for Hunting A fact-finding telephone survey of American adults 18 and older commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation showed strong support for hunting.

Three-fourths of survey respondents (74 percent) said they approved of hunting, a level of support that has not varied by more than a few percentage points since 1995.

“The numbers have been consistent over the past two decades,” said Mark Damian Duda, executive director of Responsive Management, the research firm that conducted the study.

“Support for hunting is solid,” Duda added.

opinion about hunting, Americans stand firmly behind a person’s right to hunt, with 94 percent agreeing it is “OK for other people to hunt if they do so legally and in accordance with hunting laws and regulations.” Only 4 percent of respondents wanted to strip citizens of the right to hunt.

“It’s gratifying to see that strong public support for our great tradition of hunting is unwavering,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. “For many of us, it is extremely fulfilling to provide food for ourselves and our families through hunting, even if only on a few days a year.

That’s one of many reasons why NSSF and others work so

diligently to protect hunting.”

The survey also revealed that Americans have a taste for eating what sportsmen harvest. Sixty-seven percent of respondents indicated they have eaten some type of wild (non-farm) game meat or fish within the last 12 months. This finding corresponds to people’s growing interest about their food sources. Hunters and their families have always known the benefits of eating healthful, hormone-free game meat, and now more people are enjoying cooking and eating game, with some of them even taking up hunting because it connects them directly with locally acquired, sustainable foods.

The survey also revealed the public was equally supportive of target shooting, with 93 percent agreeing that target shooting is acceptable.

nSSF Study Quantifies hunters’ Generosity A new study commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and conducted by Mile Creek Communications reveals that in 2010, some 11 million meals were provided to the less fortunate through donations of venison by hunters. Nearly 2.8 million pounds of game meat made its way to shelters, food banks, and church kitchens and onto the plates of those in need.

“Given our challenging economic times, hunters’ donations of venison have never been more important to so many people,” said Steve Sanetti, president and CEO of the NSSF, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting, and shooting sports industry. “These contributions are just one way hunting and hunters are important to our way of life in America.

Learning about these impressive figures makes me proud to be a hunter. I have donated game meat during the past year, and I urge my fellow hunters to strongly

consider sharing their harvest.”

Though the 11 million meals represent an incredibly generous donation, the actual amount of gifted game meat may have been much higher.

“These figures are from confirmed sources, but annual donations could easily be double this amount if ‘direct’ donations from hunters to friends and family are included,” said Jim Curcuruto, NSSF’s director of statistics and research.

Curcuruto added that the NSSF commissioned the study to better understand the size and scope of these venison donations. Groups often cooperate to ensure a successful donation program. In Georgia, according to the Athens Banner Herald, the Georgia Wildlife Federation pays for the meat to be butchered and packaged at state-licensed processors, the state Department of Natural

Resources oversees the program, and the Georgia Food Bank Association coordinates distributions. Additionally, the game meat satisfies shelters’ need for nutritious food items. Dave Williams, who manages food resources for a northeastern Georgia food bank, said in the Banner Herald that he is focused on acquiring more nutritious items, and noted, “Deer venison is such a low-fat, high-protein item, agencies greatly appreciate getting it.”

Another news report out of the IndianaKentucky-Illinois area pointed out that one deer can feed up to 200 people. Ground venison is a versatile food, with cooks using it in pasta sauces, chili, tacos, meatloaf, burgers, and other dishes.

Individual hunters donate game meat and even pay for processing, though many hunters choose to work with organizations.

Technology: Ignore it at your peril!

W

ith another business year drawing quickly to a close, I took a minute to browse through the FYIs that ran in the 2011 issues of SHOT Business. Often such reflection is little more than a time marker, a nostalgic review of another 12 months that passed too quickly. But in some years, a common theme emerges, and this season I was struck by an unmistakable thread: In virtually every FYI column for the season, retailers and experts I interviewed offered their take on some aspect of technology that could help us all conduct business better or more efficiently.

This can be tough medicine to swallow for those of us with balding pates and graying temples. I was dragged kicking and screaming into the computer age, and even now—nearly 20 years after buying my first IBM “word processor”—when my machine crashes, I can spew venom that would earn a swat from the back of my mother’s hand. But gosh darn it, when a computer works, it’s a thing to behold, and I’d be a fool if I said it wasn’t a time-saver and a money-maker. And, of course, technology seems to make quantum leaps each year, and in 2011 it was foremost on the minds of the retailers I interviewed. In case you’ve forgotten, here’s a quick review.

We also covered online training seminars when we turned to Joel VanderHoek, co-owner of Dave’s Sports Shop in Linden, Washington. VanderHoek noted the efficiency of having employees staying up-to-date on various product lines by completing computer-generated training courses that not only keep staff informed of new products, but offers instruction on the best methods for selling them. Even better, the cyber-training provides financial incentives for achieving mastery—all at zero cost to the shop owner struggling with low margins and searching for bonuses to reward good employees.

These columns—all written with no prompting to retailers or forethought by this magazine—painted a clear picture: The groundswell of technological offerings available to the modern gun shop or range owner/operator is too comprehensive and alluring to ignore. As we flip the calendar to a new business year, let’s all make a resolution to embrace the hardware, software, and electronic gizmos that can not only make our lives easier, but pad that bottom line.

Power needn’t be ugly. Cooper’s new muscle gun boasts classic lines and fine wood

“P

lain French, please.” Claro walnut is standard; French meant I’d pay extra. Fancy French would have hiked the price substantially, so I resisted. Besides, even a basic Cooper 56 is an upscale rifle.

The Model 56 from Cooper combines an elegant look with faultless function. As for accuracy, you’d be hard-pressed to find a magnum bolt-action that can outshoot it.

Announced early last year, the first magnum bolt rifle from the Stevensville, Montana, firm has a lot in common with its older siblings, the Model 52 long-action and the more recent Model 54 short-action sporters. Its 26-inch barrel is a giveaway (the 52 and 54 wear 24- and 22-inch barrels), though Cooper accommodates special orders for other lengths. The 56 has flush crossbolts fore and aft of the magazine; its siblings do not. All are stocked in handcheckered walnut (polymers, if you choose), with a steel grip cap and a Decelerator pad. The 56’s one-piece bottom metal is steel or alloy, depending on which of six versions you order.

Long ago, as we discussed his Model 57 rimfire and 38 centerfire .22 mechanisms, Dan Cooper told me that reliable cartridge feed “is much harder to guarantee than you’d think.”

But his slick-cycling bolt-actions

always delivered. Cooper has since relinquished the company reins to Hugo Vivero, who also owns the Wilson barrel company that supplies Cooper barrels. Ian, Hugo’s son, is an engineer now engrossed in rifle design. Retailers can rest assured that Cooper will continue to focus on faultless function and accuracy.

Fit and Finish Recently I revisited the Montana factory to see how new Cooper rifles come together. Model 56 receivers start as bar stock. Blanks are meticulously machined, each three-lug bolt finished to slide like a piston. The Sako-style extractor works opposite a bolt-face plunger ejector. The serrated bolt release and rocking two-position thumb safety are small and neatly inletted.

The safety doesn’t lock the

bolt. A thick-walled stainlesssteel magazine corrals a threeround, single-file stack. The box fits almost flush; a tidy forward latch drops it into your hand for loading. Cartridges slip smoothly off the dished follower. A modest ejection port keeps the receiver stiff for best accuracy, but it’s open enough to permit easy singlefeed. Shaped on CNC machines, stocks are hand-bedded for seamless marriage to the receiver.

Perfect Balance Cooper’s trigger for the 56 is adjustable from 1.5 to 5 pounds. My Timney gauge registered 3.5 pounds on the test rifle, a .308 Norma Magnum.

Each rifle comes with Talley or Leupold scope bases. I topped this 56 with 30mm Leupold rings on Leupold bases and a Swarovski 1.7–10x42 Z6 scope.

Closing the Deal

Cooper rifles are classy, not cheap.

Make the most of fine wood and fetching profiles with side-to displays; a floorplate view doesn’t do these rifles justice. Also, show the tight groups with supplied test targets. Remind customers that a fine sporter is an investment.

Pretty walnut is getting harder to find and more costly. The most famous of the M56’s forebears, the Model 70 Winchester, once retailed for $61.25.

At 8.3 pounds, the Model 56 is no lightweight, but its perfect balance gives it a lively feel.

Grip and forend are comfortable—slim enough for quick pointing, but with the beef for sure recoil control. The comb is ideally proportioned for quick aim through a low-mounted scope. Its 13 chamberings include rounds as frisky as the .340 Weatherby, so stock shape matters a great deal. Launching 180-grain bullets at 3,000 fps, this magnum was civil in recoil.

The accuracy bar was set pretty high, as my .270 Model 52 had punched a .6-inch group with its first magazine of Remington factory loads. A Model 54 on loan delivered a .35 cluster with a handload of 34-grain IMR 4895 pushing 87-grain Sierras. The six loads I tried in this M56 averaged 1.3 inches. The best, a TSX load from Safari Arms, printed a .6-inch group while clocking 3,001 fps. SRP: starts at $2,795.

Centerfire Conundrum

Why would you “spank” a customer if he asks which rifle is best for deer hunting?

I

f you have an interest in hunting deer, you’d think a gun store would be a good place to start your research. In search of a suitable budget-priced centerfire rifle, I visited four retailers in northern Georgia to ask about getting started in whitetail deer hunting.

Model 336 without much explanation except to note the prices. When I handed them back, he put them up on the rack and just looked at me. I tried to initiate some talk about the guns’ features. That’s when Joe pulled down my pants and spanked me—or at least it felt like he did.

STORE A This independent retailer is in a large steel building that was clean and had an outdoor-adventure atmosphere. It had a lot of clothing, camping gear, and hunting accessories.

When I arrived at the gun counter, I noticed a decent selection of about 50 rifles and maybe another 50 shotguns. Three other customers were eying handguns in the glass counters, and three clerks milled about behind the counter. Right away when I walked up, an older man—let’s call him Joe—cheerfully asked if he could help me with anything.

It went downhill from there.

I said I was looking for a deer rifle to start hunting deer in the area. When he asked me what caliber, I said, “Maybe a .243 or .270. What would you recommend for deer in this area?”

He seemed annoyed and rattled off another five calibers, up to .300 Win. Mag. Then he handed me a Marlin XS7 in .270 and a lever-action .30/30 Marlin

STORE B This small, bustling independent hunting and shooting store is about to move into a new, larger building nearby. I stopped by on a Monday around noon and waited about five minutes for help from one of the three

I told them I was looking for a rifle to get started deer hunting in the area. I also said I did not want to spend a whole lot of money.

One of the clerks seemed enthusiastic about helping me, and answered my questions about hunting in the area, what calibers might be best for the region, and what models would be in my price range. “Kyle” steered me to guns in the $300 range: a Savage Axis, a Mossberg 100 ATR, and a Marlin 336.

We talked about Remington 700s as the next step up in price and quality. He discouraged me from looking at the lowerpriced Remington 710 TFL, saying it was made for box-store distribution and was “garbage.”

After that spanking, no way would I be back. But in the three other stores, the clerks seemed to enjoy bringing a future Blood Brother aboard. They took their time as we explored what might be the right centerfire, caliber, and model for this “new recruit.”

When “Bob” asked me if I needed help, I asked him to recommend a gun that I might buy for getting into deer hunting in the area. Bob rattled off a few calibers in the .270- to .30-caliber range, and through some voodoo settled on .308 for me.

“Around here, you don’t need a magnum, flat-shooting gun. Shots are usually within 150 yards because of all the hills and dense trees.”

Regarding guns, he recommended three models: a Savage Axis (formerly called Edge), a Mossberg Maverick, and a CVA Scout. All were in the $300 range.

He didn’t offer to hand me a gun to shoulder. Still, I ran out of questions before he ran out of time, even though there was at least one other person browsing nearby.

STORE D A clean operation with well-stocked shelves, this small, independent store is located on a rural road northwest of Atlanta. The bulk of the business is in 25-yard indoor shooting lanes. There are some rifles on racks behind a counter, perhaps 50 or so appropriate for hunting

deer. One clerk was helping a man who was looking at handguns. The other clerk was chatting about guns in general with someone who seemed like a regular. I browsed and waited about five minutes before anyone said anything to me.

The young clerk—we’ll call her Jessica—was energetic and helpful, and seemed genuinely interested in my pursuit. When I mentioned I wanted to get into deer hunting, she said, “Oh, yeah!”

She showed me a Thompson/Center Venture (which she inadvertently called a Contender) in .30/06 that had “been shot

once or twice” but was traded in for a lighter-recoiling .243. She said that the Venture was one of her favorites, and explained some of the features. The price tag was about $550. She asked if that’s what I was looking for as far as price range, and I told her that was on the high side. She happily checked around and showed me a few used rifles.

We had a discussion about calibers, and she was very informative and passed along her extensive knowledge. As I thanked her, she gave me a 2011 Savage product catalog.

All but one of the guns we spoke about were on the wall at the store. he led me to believe that the centerfire selection is much better closer to deer season.

This year’s crop of new rifles is noticeably larger, and more diverse, than that of recent years. As has been the case during the last few years, the AR-derived Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) is wellrepresented. But manufacturers are adding calibers beyond the traditional 5.56mm, and among the new models are more 6.8mm SPC, 7.62x39mm, and a pair of relatively new .30 calibers that provide the same magazine capacity as the 5.56mm.

On the bolt-action scene, new tactical models make an appearance, but traditional hunting models are also on display, including an innovative new bolt-action design from Merkel. Rimfire fans won’t be disappointed, especially with the new lineup from CZ-USA. Lever-action buffs will want to check out two new models from Winchester—the upgraded models in the Marlin line and the classic 1886 offered by Cimarron.

features a two-row six-lug bolt mated directly to a cold-hammer-forged 22.1-inch barrel for a 60-degree bolt throw. ARMALITE For 2012, ArmaLite adds two calibers to its popular M-15 SPR Mod 1 system that features the one-piece upper receiver/

rail system with detachable side and bottom rails. New this year are the 6.8mm SPC and the 7.62x39mm. Both feature a 16-inch, free-floated, doublelapped, chrome-lined chromemoly barrel that is threaded ⅝-24 to accept most suppressors. Equipped with a flash suppressor, the 6.8mm has a 1:11 twist rate; the 7.62x39 has a 1:10 twist rate.

The remaining features are identical and include a frontsight-base gas block with a Picatinny rail top that sits .293 inches lower than the receiver top, a forged flat-top upper receiver with an 8-inch hand guard, and a Picatinny rail with laser-engraved rail-slot numbering. Both upper and lower receivers are forged from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy.

The trigger assembly is a tactical two-stage; the first stage measures 3.5 pounds, the sec-

CENTURY INTERNATIONAL ARMS A new Romanian manufactured recoil-reducing buttstock (designed to reduce felt recoil by up to 50 percent) will be available on the Century Arms WASR rifle. The WASR equipped with this stock is chambered for the 7.62x39mm and features a synthetic forearm and hand guard. It also has a 16.25-inch barrel with traditional AK-47-style sights, an empty weight of 7.6 pounds, and ships with a 30-round

CIMARRON FIREARMS The Winchester 1886 was one of the most popular rifles of the Old West, and one of the strongest lever-action designs ever made. This year, Cimarron introduces its 1886 ($1,620.52) made by Armi Sport in Italy. The rifle features a traditional case-hardened receiver and a rifle buttplate, and is chambered for the .4570 Gov’t. CZ-USA The CZ 455 rimfire bolt-action is intended to consolidate all the receivers of the Model 452 line into one uniform base rimfire platform while adding the ability to interchange barrels, rimfire calibers, and stock configurations. All 455 models feature an action machined from bar stock, an adjustable trigger, a detachable magazine feed, coldhammer-forged barrels, and a standard 11mm optic-mounting dovetail. Four new models enter the 455 model line this year.

The CZ 455 FS features a full-length Mannlicher walnut stock, a 20.6-inch barrel, and adjustable iron sights. Available in .22LR ($499) and .22 WMR and .17 HMR ($524), it ships with a single five-round magazine. The 455 Varmint (walnut stock) features a heavier and stiffer barrel for enhanced accuracy. Available in .22LR ($456) and .22 WMR and .17 HMR ($483), it also accepts all accessory barrels available for the 455 platform and ships

The CZ 455 Varmint with SS Evolution Stock features a Sky Blue/Gray laminated stock. While the bolt is on the righthand side, the SS Evolution stock is designed to be fully ambidextrous, including cheekpiece, teardrop pistol grip, and palm swell. The barrel is free-floated. The base rifle is available in .22LR ($522), but also accepts all currently available accessory barrels in all rimfire calibers.

The CZ 455 Precision Trainer .22LR ($899) was designed to produce the same look and feel as a full-size tactical rifle while allowing economical rimfire training. The Precision Trainer features a MCS-T4 Manners composite stock and a heavy .886-inch diameter barrel. The CZ 527 bolt-action is a true micro-length Mauser action designed specifically for small-based .223-sized rounds. LEGACY SPORTS INTERNATIONAL New from Howa this year is a redesigned trigger system for Howa rifles and an accessory kit that allows detachable magazines of five or 10 rounds to be used with the M-1500 series of bolt-action rifles. The Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger system (HACT) is a completely redesigned trigger and sear unit that creates a two-stage trigger. This allows the shooter to take up designed trigger slack/creep to arrive at a crisp let-off point of between 2.5 to 3.8 pounds. SMITH & WESSON For 2012, S&W will add the .300 Whisper to the M&P rifle series. The new M&P 15 .300 Whisper features a 16-inch 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel

with a 1:7.5 twist, and a Melonite finish. The barrel is threaded ⅝-24 to accept most suppressors, and is equipped with an A-2-style flash hider.

The forged 7075 aluminumalloy upper and lower receivers are covered in Realtree APG camouflage. Additional features include a single-stage trigger assembly, a chromelined gas key and bolt carrier, a six-position collapsible CAR buttstock, forward assist, and an integral one-piece trigger guard. WEATHERBY The Mark V .338 Lapua Mag Accumark ($2,300) features a hand-laminated raised-comb, composite Monte Carlo stock with a matte gel-coat finish, and sling-swivel studs. The buttonrifled and free-floated barrel is a blued, chrome-moly 26-inch No. 3 contour (.705-inch muzzle diameter) with a target crown.

An Accubrake brings the total length to 28 inches. Additional features include a factory-tuned fully adjustable trigger, CNCmachined T-6 aluminum bedding plate, and a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.

The .338 Lapua MAG TRR ($2,900) is part of the

Weatherby Threat Response line. It features the same barrel, Accubrake, and bedding block as the Accumark, but is supplied with an ergonomic full-pistol grip, fully adjustable (length of pull, cast, and comb height) stock to allow individual fitting. The hand-tuned fully adjustable trigger is set from the factory at 3 pounds.

Two new models join the popular Vanguard Series 2 line in the RC (Range Certified) series. To gain this label, the guns are tested at the Weatherby range. All RC guns are guaranteed to shoot subMOA with a specified Weatherby factory load, or other premium ammunition brands, and a test target is included with the gun.

Those who love lever guns, and equally love the convenience of a take-down model, will want to look at the new Winchester Model 94 Trails End Takedown ($1,459.99).

Chambered for .30/30 Win. and .450 Marlin, it easily disassembles into two parts for storage or transport. It will feature a walnut stock and forearm with satin finish with a straight-grip style. The 20-inch barrel and the receiver are blue steel. A Marble Arms front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear sight are standard.

The .450 Marlin version also features a thick Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad and barrel porting to help reduce muzzle jump. Overall length for each is 38 inches, and they weigh a trim 6.75 pounds.

Cowboy Action shooters, as well as those who just like “fun guns,” will want to check out the new Winchester Model 1892 Large Loop Carbine ($1,259.99). This year sees a varied selection of smoothbores that covers just about any shotgun use. A redesigned Citori over/under and a new over/under and a single-barrel trap gun from Ithaca will appeal to fixed-breech fans, while CZ-USA offers two new side-by-side models at attractive prices.

The trend toward task-specific models at popular prices continues with new waterfowl and turkey models from a number of companies. You’ll also see a steady mix of 20-gauge chamberings in the turkey lines. A number of new Youth models make an appearance, and while they may be intended for the field, many self-defense experts would cheerfully take those compact models in 20-gauge for home defense. Fans of recoil-operated shotguns will want to take a look at the reintroduced Browning A-5. Whether it’s a basic field gun, a high-tech competition gun, or a sturdy home defense gun, there’s plenty to see this year.

A refined 12-gauge waterfowl gun and an ultralight 28-gauge semi-auto highlight Benelli’s new 2012 offerings. The new Benelli Super Black Eagle II (SBE II) Performance Shop Waterfowl Edition ($2,899) is a highly tuned 12-gauge semiauto with a 3.5-inch chamber designed for serious waterfowl enthusiasts. This year will see the reintroduction of Browning’s classic A-5 “humpback” recoiloperated 12-gauge, but the familiar humpback profile is about the only thing the new A-5 shares with its predecessor.

CZ-USA Five new model variations of existing designs enter the CZ shotgun line this year. The 712 Target 12-gauge ($660) is built on the proven gas-operated aluminum-alloy 712 action with target-grade enhancements for the price-conscious shooter. Chambered for 3-inch shells (with a gas system that will reliably handle 2.75-inch

target loads), it features a 30-inch chrome-lined barrel with a fiber-optic front sight on a 10mm stepped rib.

Magazine capacity is 4+1, and interchangeable choke tubes in F, M, and IC are included.

The 712 Adjustable Length Stock 12-gauge ($562) is the basic 712 action with the polymer ATI adjustable stock that provides a 12- to 14-inch length of pull to allow easy fitting to shooters of differing stature. The 28-inch barrel features a fiber-optic front sight.

This new Target version adds additional features that include a 30-inch barrel with a 10mm stepped rib, Schnabel forend, smooth rounded heel, 14.75-inch length of pull, and a Monte Carlo buttstock with castoff for right-handed shooters. Fans of side-by-sides will want to check out two new versions of CZ’s Ringneck SxS. The Ringneck Straight Grip 20-Gauge ($993) features 26-inch barrels chambered for

3-inch shells, a Turkish walnut stock with a straight English pistol grip, a case-hardened receiver, polished blued barrels, a single selective mechanical trigger, and extractors rather than auto ejectors. The Greener Top Cross Bolt system and bottom-locking action make for a strong action. Five interchangeable, flush-fitting choke tubes (C, IC, M, IM, and F) are included.

The Ringneck Target 12-Gauge ($1,143) provides the same features, but in a 12-gauge with 3-inch chambers, a full-size target grip, and 30-inch barrels. Turkey hunters (or those looking for a handy home defense shotgun) will want to check out the new SA-459 Turkey gun.

Available in 12- and 20-gauge ($699), these gas-operated semiautos feature a 21.5-inch barrel chambered for 3-inch shells.

They are threaded for interchangeable choke tubes and are shipped with an extra Full extended tube (accessory tubes

In many areas of the country, hunters who wish to mix fur with feathers in their freezer are required to use a shotgun for both birds and deer. In other areas, the shotgun for

deer is a personal preference, and when ranges are under 150 yards, few would argue with the effectiveness of a 12-gauge sabot slug when it comes to bringing home the venison. For 2012, Weatherby introduces two new combo shotgun versions of its PA-08 pump action that can handle both chores at a wallet-friendly price.

The CNC-machined PA-08 action is constructed of aircraft-

grade aluminum alloy, with a chrome-plated bolt in the operating action. A drop-out trigger system allows for easy cleaning.

Line upgrades to Winchester’s Super X3 semi-auto and Super X pump-action lines highlight its new 2012 product offerings.

New in the Super X3 line are the Black Field and Black Field Compact models.

Both will feature satin oil-finished walnut stocks with classic cut checkering and matte black receivers of high-strength aluminum alloy. The barrels feature 3-inch chambers with a chrome-plated bore and chamber, and are threaded for the Invector Plus interchangeable choke tube system.

Both models will be offered in 12- and 20-gauge and will be available with either 26- or 28-inch barrels. The Black Field has standard stock dimensions while the Compact model has a 13-inch length of pull to better accommodate smallerframed shooters. SRP: $1,069.

The Super X Pump line (SXP) will now see a 12-gauge 3.5-inch version in three different model variations. All feature hard-chrome chamber and bores, the Invector Plus choke tube system, and a drop-out trigger group for easy cleaning.

The SXP Waterfowl Hunter ($579.99) will be offered in 26- or 28-inch barrel lengths with a synthetic stock featuring textured gripping surfaces and covered in Mossy Oak Duck Blind Camo. The dominant theme in this year’s new crop of handguns really hasn’t changed all that much from what we’ve seen the past couple of years. Personal defense still rules, as seen by the new model launches by a number of companies. In addition, new caliber offerings in proven models appear from Springfield Armory and Kahr, while Colt joins the lightweight pocket .380 market.

Although striker-fired polymer guns are strong, the 1911 is still big, with new models from Dan Wesson and Para USA. Old West single-action fans, especially movie buffs, will find some new models from Cimarron interesting, and SIG Sauer is reimagining the P226 as the MK25.

Those who enjoy double-action revolvers—and the low cost of rimfire ammunition—will definitely want to check out Ruger’s new eight-shot SP101.

CENTURY INTERNATIONAL ARMS Two new 9mm handguns, manufactured in Turkey by Canik 55, will begin being imported into the U.S. this year.

The Stingray-C pistol is built on an operating action similar to the CZ-75. Chambered for 9mm, it features a 3.5-inch barrel, an overall length of 6.75 inches, and an accessory rail on the dust cover. It provides DA/ SA function, with the capability to carry cocked and locked.

Finished in black matte, it has an ambidextrous slide release and thumb safeties and a loaded-chamber indicator. A windage-adjustable rear sight completes the package. It can be had with 10- or 13-round magazines and ships with two.

The TP-9 pistol is a polymerframed double-action strikerfired 9mm. It features a 4-inch barrel, with an overall length of 7.25 inches, and a dust-cover rail, and is equipped with a click-adjustable rear sight. CZ-USA Two new versions of the CZ P-07, and new competitionready models from the CZ Custom Shop, highlight the 2012 offerings from CZ-USA. Although its name is Duty, the P-07 is a midsize semi-auto with a 3.8-inch barrel and

lightweight polymer frame.

Available in 9mm (16+1 capacity) and .40 S&W (12+1), it has proven a popular choice for civilian concealed carry. Its Omega Trigger System allows shooters to operate the gun as a traditional DA/SA with a decock lever or shift to a manual safety in the same manner as the venerable CZ-75 series. A reversible magazine release makes it southpaw-friendly.

This year it will be available in the OD Green model, with an olive drab frame and black polycoat upper ($489).

The P-07 with threaded barrel ($528) features an extended barrel that is threaded ½x28 to accept most sound suppressors made for the U.S. market.

Finished in black polycoat, it features elevated sights that will clear a 1-inch-diameter suppressor; an enlarged rear sight provides a positive sight picture over the suppressor.

The CZ Custom Shop produces competition-ready handguns based on the CZ-75 and the CZ SP-01 under the Shadow series. All models feature swept high-rise beavertail frames, a competition hammer, an extended firing pin, a drop-free magazine break, reduced weight springs, an ambidextrous extended manual safety, and two 18+1 extended magazine base plates. There is no firing-pin block (in order to produce a better trigger pull). SA trigger weight is set at 3.5 to 4 pounds; the DA pull

CIMARRON FIREARMS Well-known for replica firearms that have proven very popular with Cowboy Action shooters, Cimarron expands that line this year. But it also adds a classic 1911 .45 ACP and a big-bore derringer.

The new Cimarron Thunderstorm ($606.15) is

designed for the Cowboy Action Mounted Shooter and is competition-ready out of the box. The single-action six-shot .45 Colt is built on the Model P platform and features either a 3.5- or 4.75-inch barrel with the Model P grip that features checkering to eliminate shifting in the hand while mounted shooting. A wide front sight and deep rear notch provide faster target acquisition, while a knurled hammer designed for easy one-hand cocking prevents the thumb from slipping off. It will be offered in a stainlesssteel or standard blue finish.

The Cimarron Hollywood line gives movie buffs the opportunity to own the handguns inspired by some classic Westerns, but built from modern materials (by Pietta of Italy). The Man With No Name Single Action (from A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More) is a Model P in .45 Colt with either a 4.75- or 5.5-inch barrel ($810.55). The Man With No Name Conversion—the 1851 appearing in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly—completes the set. It has a 7.5-inch octagon barrel and is chambered for .38 Special/.38 Colt ($810.55). The Holy Smoker (from 3:10 to Yuma) is a 4.75inch .45 Colt ($810.55). The Rooster Shooter (inspired by the movie True Grit) is a 4.75inch barrel available in .45 Colt, .44 WCF, or .357 ($845.11). DAN WESSON Two new 1911 handguns—a compact in 9mm or .45 ACP and a full-size .45 ACP—enter the Dan Wesson line this year.

The company is also bringing back the Razorback 1911.

The DW ECO is a singlestack Officer’s-size 1911 chambered for 9mm ($1,623) and .45 ACP ($1,662). Both feature a 7+1 capacity. The gun is built on an aluminum-alloy frame with undercut trigger guards and 25 lpi checkering. The mainspring housing is also aluminum with 25 lpi checkering and features a rounded bottom for easier concealment, as well as an Ed Brown high-rise grip safety. The forged-steel slide carries tritium night sights with a tactical ledge rear sight on the 3.5-inch slide. The barrel is a flush-cut ramped bull barrel (with a target crown). KAHR ARMS The Kahr CM series debuted in 2011 with the 9mm model.

It incorporated many of the features of the CW model into a smaller 3-inch-barrel package, with some new features that resulted in a lower price point. For 2012, Kahr brings the same gun out in a bigger bore.

The new CM4043 ($517) is chambered for .40 S&W and has a 3-inch barrel. Overall length is 5.47 inches. It uses a conventionally rifled barrel instead of the polygonal barrel on Kahr’s PM series, and is shipped with one 5-round stainless-steel flush-floor-plate magazine instead of the two provided with the more expensive PM models.

The CM4043 features a black polymer frame with 4140 steel inserts molded into the frame, a machined 416 stainless-steel slide with a matte finish, and Kahr’s safe-cam action double-action trigger that incorporates a passive firing-pin block. RUGER FIREARMS Customers asked for it, and this year Ruger will build it. New for 2012 is an eight-shot Ruger SP101 chambered for the .22LR. The double-action stainless-steel satin-finish revolver has a 4.2inch barrel, a fully adjustable (windage and elevation) square notch rear sight, a fiber-optic front sight, and a half shroud on the ejector rod. One-piece rubber grips with engraved wood side panel inserts complete the package ($675).

In the personal-protection line, Ruger adds a LaserMax centerfire trigger-guardmounted laser to the polymerframed semi-auto LCP .380 ACP ($443) and the LC9 9mm ($525). The laser features an ambidextrous on/off switch and is adjustable for windage and elevation. It can be easily removed and reinstalled with the included Allen wrench.

SIG SAUER Two new major product launches, a new frame design, several upgrades to existing models, and a new carbine package that can turn many existing SIG handguns into a stable long-range platform highlight the 2012 offerings from SIG Sauer. The new P224 is the classic SIG design in a true sub-compact package. It will be available in 9mm (11+1 capacity), .40 S&W, and .357 SIG (10+1), and can be had with either a DA/SA or DAK trigger system.

The P224 will be offered in four versions.The SAS SIG Anti-Snag features a de-horned slide and frame, one-piece ergonomic grips, and Siglite night sights. The Equinox offers the same configuration as the rest of the Equinox series, but with a two-toneaccented Nitron stainless-steel slide, a Tru-Glo tritium fiber-optic front sight with a Siglite rear sight, Hogue blackdiamond grips, and nickelplated controls.

The Nickel variant features a nickel slide and controls over a black hardcoat-anodized aluminum frame with custom Hogue black G-10 grips and Siglite night sights. The Extreme model features Hogue black-and-gray Piranha grips and Siglite night sights.

The Extreme offers a Nitroncoated stainless-steel slide over a hard-anodized-alloy frame, Hogue’s G-10 black-and-gray Piranha grips, and Siglite night sights. The SAS model has a fully dehorned slide and frame, a natural finished stainless-steel slide over a hard-anodized black frame, walnut stippled grips, and Siglite night sights. The Equinox has a polished twotone Nitron slide over a hardanodized-alloy frame, the TFO front sight with the Siglite rear, and black diamond-wood grips.

The new frame design is the 1911 Fastback. This 1911 SA frame is designed for concealed carry with a SIG proprietary rounded frame and mainspring housing. It will become available in both fullsize and carry (Commandersized) guns.

Two variants in both sizes will appear this year. The Nightmare features a black Nitron stainless-steel frame and slide, Hogue Double Diamond black G-10 grips, low-pro night sights, and stainless-finished controls and grippanel screws. The Rosewood is a reverse two-tone all-stainless

The new 1911 Ultra is the smallest 1911 yet produced by SIG. The .45 ACP features a 6+1 capacity, a stainless-steel slide over an alloy frame, and 26 lpi front-strap checkering.

Two variants will be offered: the Nitron, with an all-black finish with black Diamondwood grips, low-pro night sights, and a skeletonized trigger; and the Two-Tone, which features a natural-finish stainless-steel slide over a black hard-anodized-alloy frame, rosewood grips, a skeletonized trigger, and night sights.

In the P250 Sub-Compact platform, three new releases appear this year. The .45 ACP version has a 6+1 capacity with the same function as the rest of the P250 series. A .380 ACP locked-breech version will have a 12+1 capacity (15round magazines should be available in the near future). A Sub-Compact Rail model will feature a medium frame with a 1913 rail. The initial launch will be as a 9mm, but the grip module assembly will soon be available for P250 owners of 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG guns that have the small grip module without a rail.

The MK25 is the new designation for the P226 9mm model variant that is issued to the Navy Special Warfare Group (SEALs). Like the original, it features phosphated internal action parts, Siglite night sights, and classic twopiece polymer grips. It ships with three 15-round magazines. It now includes a M1913 rail and an engraved anchor on the slide. It will be packaged with a FDE grip band and a certificate of authenticity.

Have trouble estimating range? Bushnell has the answer

T

hese days, binoculars can’t just be binoculars. They have to be something more. Case in point: Bushnell’s Fusion 1600 ARC (Angle Range Compensation) laser rangefinding binocular.

This model not only helps a hunter find game, but it helps him determine where to hold for the most accurate shot.

I used a 10x42 model on an elk hunt in Oregon’s Blue Mountains last fall and found that there was a lot to like. The Fusion features BaK-4 prisms with a PC-3 phase-corrective coating for superior resolution and clarity, as well as the red Vivid Display Technology (VDT), which enhances the display readout in all lighting conditions. But that’s not all.

Range Made Easy “We also have a digital accelerometer, which is just a fancy way of saying it’s an inclinometer that tells a hunter the degree of slope,” says Jordan Vermillion, Bushnell’s product director of sports optics, who accompanied me.

Flatlanders may not be interested in this feature, but to anyone who hunts in the mountains, where elk are usually found,

this is a shot saver. “The Fusion works both for bowhunters and rifle hunters,” Vermillion says. “Just toggle the mode switch to get the proper setting. You’ll know which is which because of the icons we use—bow or rifle.”

Vermillion also points out another invaluable feature for rifle hunters—a bullet-drop calculator. “We worked with Sierra Bullets and looked at 2,000 caliber and grain combinations,” he says.

Don’t worry; the result is not some ballistic chart nightmare. All you need to do is go to the Bushnell website and click on the Ballistic Charts icon. Find the brand of ammo, then the caliber and grain. The chart will give you a centerfire ballistic setting that ranges from A to H; blackpowder hunters will use settings I and J. Peer through the lenses and toggle the mode switch until the proper letter comes

Closing the Sale Though the Fusion 1600 ARC is not complicated to operate, your sales staff needs to be able to toggle effortlessly through the Mode switch to show off the features quickly.

And give the buyer a helpful hint. The best way to use this binocular is to pre-range the area around a blind or stand.

That way, when the shot presents itself, a hunter will know exactly where to hold without any further fumbling around.

No One-Trick Pony Keep in mind that the laser rangefinder is located in the right lens, so make sure your eyes line up properly or you won’t see the display. I speak from personal experience here—when 30 elk move through a timbered draw, you can get a little excited trying to find the branch bull.

According to Vermillion, the Fusion 1600 is capable of providing 10 to 1,600 yards of ranging performance as well as a sight-in performance of 100, 150, 200, or 300 yards. “This is not a one-trick pony,” he says. “In addition, by combining two accessories—a binocular and a rangefinder— into one compact unit, we’re not only providing enhanced value, we’re creating a tool that requires less movement on the part of the hunter—and that’s critical when hunting elk or other sharp-eyed big game.”

Vermillion also emphasizes one other advantage of the Fusion. “It completely takes the guesswork out of figuring range, bullet drop, and degree of slope,” variables that have bedeviled hunters since we first threw spears at woolly mammoths.

“When it’s minus 35 outside, our customers are thinking about scopes for their rifles or reloading.

The winter is one of our strongest accessory sales periods,” says owner Chris Yeager.

Besides Leupold and Nikon scopes, handguns are steady sellers, and much of the new inventory is dedicated to .40 Glocks and Springfield XDs. At the rifle counter, it’s mostly Ruger 10/22s, although a few modern sporting rifles (MSRs) turn each month from Bushmaster in .223.

Located on U.S. Routes 160/550, this general hunting store carries archery, soft goods, firearms, and reloading supplies. All things .22-caliber are hot at this retailer, and plenty of Ruger 10/22s are ringing the register. Marlin XTs in .22 and .17HMR are also strong sellers.

This retailer depends on postChristmas traffic from gift certificate sales. “This was a strongerthan-ever year for certificate sales.

They range from $50 to $350, and almost all of them are redeemed by the third week of January,” says counterperson Dale Williams.

MSR sales remain strong, outpacing December and November, when Williams says, “varmint hunters are gearing up.” Handgun sales are strong for classic Springfield 1911s in .45ACP and XDMs in .40.

Midwest Sports IL Shooting Unlimited, Moline

With nine handgun shooting lanes and 250 guns in stock, this Quad Cities gun shop’s handgun business pulls from a two-state area. The store’s handgun sales have exceeded that of last December. “The 100year anniversary of the 1911 has been very good to us, with customers—some coming from as far away as 100 miles—seeking out our inventory,” says counterperson Chris Smith. Ruger and Springfield top the classic 1911 brands; Kimber is in third place. The Springfield XDM in 9mm is another strong seller.

In addition to Ruger Mark III’s, Ruger 10/22s are turning after the holidays. MSR sales have slowed to an average of three per month, mostly Rock Rivers in .223. Savage Varmint guns are starting to sell in Model 10s and 12s in .223 and .243.

This specialty rifle shop keeps an average of 400 boltaction rifles in stock year-round.

Although Januarys are slower for this unique store, long guns are continuing to ship well. “All we do are bolt-action rifles. When our customers need to choose an ideal caliber for a quality rifle, they come to us,” says owner Jack Cherry.

Remington custom actions and Remington Custom Factory guns are the largest sellers; .308 and .30/06 attract the most attention.

Ruger Number 1s and special-order Model 77s are also in demand.

“Our customer demands have changed greatly from the days of trap and skeet guns to custom .22s and handguns. We see more pistols that need a simple cleaning than any other problem,” says owner George Scoutus. Custom triggers and smoothing actions are also a significant part of their business.

In long guns, Ruger 10/22s receive the most modifications, while older Marlin and Savage Model 99 leveractions are in high demand.

By January, sales are driven heavily by gift certificates. “We have special holiday range-training gift cards that are often given to first-time gun buyers.

Once someone receives a range package and training course, they almost always buy a new gun,” says salesman and instructor Kevin Lane.

Home shotguns are heating up, and Mossberg 500 Home Defense models top the list. Smith M&P 15s and Saiga .223 carbines hold the high spot for rifle sales. The store has expanded its training-scenario

home defense room, which has fueled handgun and shotgun sales.

Stocking 250 used and new firearms, this small-town store near the Canadian border specializes in hunting guns and hardware.

Handgun sales are slowing at this shop, with a few Judges on order and a small number of used .357 Smith K-Frames crossing the counter. “Our handgun business continues to fall. My customers hate—and I do mean hate—that most handguns have parts from China. They simply refuse to buy them,” says owner Mark Giroux.

Rabbit guns are hot here. Top sellers are H&R 20- and 12-gauge single-shots and Savage Model 10s in .223. A few Remington 700 BDLs in .223 have also sold.

Stocking an average of 1,500 guns, this metro store holds a wide variety of traditional firearms and home defense guns. Glocks and Springfield XDs in 9mm and .40 are outpacing SIG 229s and P226s. “In January, burglaries garner a lot of attention in the local media, and we see a high sales spike from the coverage,” says manager Slone Fountain.

MSRs continue to post strong numbers. Top sellers include Stag and CMMG, mostly in .223. Boltaction guns have slackened, but the Remington CDL in .308 and .30/06 are still seeing a few turns.

Defense shotguns are hotter than last year, with Mossberg hunting and home-defense combos pulling high numbers. Surefire LED flashlights top the accessory sales.

Sapp’s Pawn FL Gun & Archery, Gainesville

Renowned for its ’50s Coke machine that still offers customers a cold soda for only 10 cents, this 3,000-square-foot shop stocks firearms, archery, and tools.

Sporting rifle sales have just had the worst year in the store’s 50-year history. “We may have sold less than five bolt-actions all year. We don’t expect them to recover until the economy improves,” says owner Butch Ford.

Of the few bolt-actions sold, the sales leader is the Remington 700 BDL in .30/06. MSR sales are holding steady, with Bushmasters and Olympics in .223 realizing consistent sales. Handguns are in high demand, with the Smith SW9VE and Model 85 Taurus maintaining the top positions at the handgun case.

Gunrunner VA Sports, Charlotte

This retailer combines sales and engraving. Handgun sales are steady, but the store has changed its inventory within the last two years. “Locally we have high unemployment, so we’re stocking value-priced guns across the board, especially in handguns,” says owner Dan Wickham.

Phoenix Arms HP22s in .22 and HP25s in .25, along with Taurus Model 228s in .22, are consistent sellers. Blackpowder replicas from Navy Arms are posting some turns, as are Remington Model 1858s and Colt 1860s. A few Savage Model 10s in .223 and Ruger 10/22s have been sold to rabbit hunters.

Engraving services are growing; Cowboy Action shooters have been bringing in Henry gold-plated leveraction rifles for dressing up.

Bianchi is introducing four new Cowboy Action holsters designed by world-champion Kenda Lenseigne. The Getaway, Path Blazer, Cattle Driver, and Smokechaser feature a strong-side 10-degree cant and a cross-draw 20-degree cant, allowing a quick draw and re-holster. Made from heavyweight 12- to 14-ounce leather with steel reinforcement, the holsters have a hidden tension screw that offers custom adjustability. A wide top design keeps the holster open for easy, instinctive re-holstering.

The belt, also made from heavyweight full-grain leather, is a twopiece design featuring an elongated back support, ideal for mounted shooting. It is available either straight or with a 1.5-inch drop front. The drop front is made to position the holsters comfortably and securely (Continued on page 78)
