ichRelevance, by the company’s own assertion, “is the global leader in omnichannel personalization.” When I first encountered that sentence, I had to stop and think about it. Then I said to myself, “Omnichannel personalization? What the hell is that?” Basically, “omnichannel personalization” is the process by which retailers present personalized content to each consumer, regardless of the access channel, time, and location. In essence, it’s a sophisticated search engine that uses digital technology (in many cases, whatever mobile device you happen to have on you while you walk through a store) to provide personalized, targeted product recommendations, without necessarily engaging the customer face-to-face. If it sounds kind of creepy, it is. But in the future, you will see more of it. Because this kind of shopping experience is the way of the future, RichRelevance thought it important to look into consumer attitudes toward the process, rating various aspects as “Cool” or “Creepy.” Under the “Cool” category, two areas received overwhelming approval. First, the ability to scan a product on your mobile device to see product reviews and recommendations for other items you might like; second, an interactive map on your mobile phone that shows exactly where items are located and charts your most efficient path through the store. In the “Getting Creepy” category, the survey found less support for the practice of eliminating traditional price tags on the products. Instead, digital screens display 4 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS ❚ JANUARY 2016

prices that are tailored just to you. And in the full “Creepy” mode was facial recognition technology that identifies age and gender to target advertisements on digital screens; the ability for a salesperson to greet you by name when you enter a store because your mobile phone signals your entrance; and facial recognition technology that identifies you as a high-value shopper and relays this information to a sales associate. “Our study shows that retailers need to focus on digital store capabilities that drive engagement and convenience by making sure the right products and content are always available to shoppers,” says Diane Kegley, RichRelevance’s CMO. “Retailers have a huge opportunity to leverage their biggest asset, the store, to gain an edge when it comes to customer experience.” That said, the survey also revealed that, not surprisingly, younger shoppers were less bothered by all this than were older customers. Shooting sports retailers with a small footprint may not need to focus on any of this, but larger enterprises may find an investment in digital technology will pay off.

Mystery Ranch Provides Hunters With a New Backbone Vapur, Mossy Hauling out elk quarters is one of the toughest tasks any backcountry hunter can undertake. Mystery Ranch believes its new line of packs—the Wilderness Series—can make the process a whole lot more bearable. That’s because the packs benefit from the new Guide Light Frame, an ultralight and ultra-strong foundation for each of the new packs. “We believe the Guide Light Frame will become the new standard in the industry for backcountry hunters and guides who have been looking for an innovative solution to help the harvest process suck less,” says Ryan Holm, Mystery Ranch’s marketing manager. The Guide Light Frame is lighter and taller than its predecessors. But that’s not all. The frame has also been designed to get stiffer as more weight is added,

enabling hunters to be more nimble during the stalk and more stabilized on the extraction. “You won’t find any B-grade materials to save a few nickels or ounces here,” says Holm. “We cut no corners to save a few minutes in production. These packs are for sportsmen who seek the highest quality— both in their hunts and in their gear.” Holm says the Redirect waist belt allows a very tight fit without a hunter having to exert extra pressure on the strap. “The result is a more ergonomic fit to keep the load from shifting while in use. In addition, a fully tunable torso adjustment aids in perfect load placement, and an incorporated load-lifter extension allows better posture and greater functional stability for long packs with heavy weight.” (mysteryranch.com)

Oak Partner For Camo Water Bottle

Vapur, manufacturer of the flexible, reusable Anti-Bottle, is partnering with Mossy Oak in the launch of the new Mossy Oak Break-Up Infinity Bottle. “The flexible, lightweight features of the Vapur bottle make it an ideal hydration solution for hunters and fishermen. This was a natural next step for Vapur, and we are excited to be partnering with Mossy Oak to make it happen. We see a lot of potential for Vapur in this market, and we look forward to what the future holds,” says Brent Reinke, cofounder of Vapur. Weighing just a few ounces (85 percent lighter than a rigid bottle), the Mossy Oak BreakUp Infinity Bottle is BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, made in the U.S., and freezable. SRP: $11.99, .7-liter bottle. Tested Tough

Many hunters think being a guide would be an ideal job—until they confront reality. Guiding is a demanding vocation, one that requires a wide variety of skills to do well. In a similar vein, shooters might believe that product testing would be a lot of fun, but the reality is a bit different. Dedicated product testers spend hours punching paper targets. Frankly, it’s exhausting work. But for a shooting sports manufacturer, that’s the only way to find out how well that product will perform in the long run. “We have more than 50 certified shooters here at Crimson Trace, and this year they will shoot more than 100,000 rounds,” says Charlie Sunderlin, Crimson Trace armorer. “Product testing can be a grueling affair, with thousands of rounds shot through a single firearm during the process. Sometimes the firearm fails well before the Crimson Trace laser sight testing is completed. This testing process is not for weak or poorly designed products.” All product test shooters are required to wear ear and eye protection, and are limited to no more than 500 rounds (or fewer with some firearms) per day. Shooters also follow all range safety rules and adhere to standard hygiene rules regarding exposure to lead. Testing can be an endurance event. Testers often tape fingers and hands to prevent blisters or wear shooting gloves to offset hand fatigue. Along with the physical challenges are the pages of paperwork and forms to be completed regarding the product’s performance. Sunderlin notes that Crimson Trace product testing is so challenging that a specially designed pneumatic test shooting machine also failed. “It simply could not handle the high volume of rounds and the resulting recoil,” he says. “That machine was replaced by the 50-plus test shooters who volunteer to test new products before those items are released to the retail market.” The good news for consumers is that this rigorous product testing results in high-performing, reliable products. “We believe our testing methods and standards are unequaled in the shooting sports industry,” he says. “As a result, Crimson Trace creates products that firearms owners, shooters, law enforcement, and soldiers can rely on.” (crimsontrace.com)

Crimson Trace products undergo a rigorous testing process to assure functionality.

Mark Frances first made waves with Browning’s HydroFleece, which revolutionized the industry.

The Man Behind the Camo Clothing Revolution Mark Frances, Browning’s apparel manager, is set to hang up his scissors after 45 years

If you’ve ever hunted in the rain and cold, you should probably send Mark Frances a thank-you card for keeping you dry and warm. Or better yet, pen him a congratulatory note: The longtime Browning employee is retiring after 45 years with the Utah-based firearms and hunting company. For the last 20 years, the senior product manager of apparel for Browning has been at the development and design forefront of some of the biggest advances in clothing and outerwear for hunters. During his tenure, Browning

brought new fabrics and advanced technologies to a segment of the market that had been heavily garbed in materials not wholly suited for the hunter’s environment. While still a student at nearby Weber State, Frances got his start at Browning in 1971, serving as chauffeur and go-fer for Val Browning. From that entry-level position, he worked up through the company, learning everything he could, before volunteering for an open position in apparel during a period when sourcing was headed overseas. In his new position, Frances was part of the first overseas team to work and develop relationships with manufacturing facilities in Asia. “Being young and naïve, I said, ‘I’ll do that,’ not knowing what I had gotten myself into,” says Frances. “Browning has been very good to me. I was a kid, wet behind the ears, and they let me grow at my own pace. I did all kinds of things in product development, but I always had my eye on apparel, as I liked that category. It’s been a lot of fun, with a lot of challenges and a few successes.” Always humble, Frances’ “few” successes mark some of the most important advancements for hunters, including Browning Hydro-Fleece. Launched in 1993, Hydro-Fleece was without question the first waterproof, breathable rainwear that was also quiet. It was a game-changer in the way hunters could stay protected and concealed in any weather conditions. He also created Browning’s down program, working to adapt the traditional insulation

The new Speed line, which features an athletic fit, is Frances’ final innovation.

for modern hunters. More recently, Frances and Browning introduced hunters to nextgeneration synthetic insulations, and was among the first apparel designers to build Primaloft into hunting clothing. Not one to rest on his laurels, Frances plans to go out on top. His latest project is the Speed line of athletic-inspired hunting clothing, which features what Frances is calling a “hero-fit” for backcountry athletes, and Browning-exclusive ATACS camo. This

advanced combination of fit, features, and camo is designed to be the pinnacle of Browning’s line of hunting apparel. “Browning wouldn’t be where it is now in the clothing world without Mark Frances—and, frankly, neither would the industry,” says Travis Hall, president and CEO of Browning. “The innovations he pioneered at Browning revolutionized performance technical apparel in the hunting market.”—David Draper

FROM THE NSSF

Government Relations Team Has Banner Year Significant legislative victories involving ammo, suppressors, hunting, and anti-gun programs highlighted 2015—but there are more challenges ahead

N

SSF’s No. 1 strategic goal is to promote and protect our industry in the legislative, regulatory, and legal areas in a proactive and timely manner. Our expanding government relations efforts are the primary reason most companies belong to NSSF. We achieved some significant victories in 2015, but there are major challenges ahead. The stakes for our industry couldn’t be higher than they will be in the 2016 elections, where the contrast between Democrats and Republicans on various gun issues couldn’t be starker.

The #GUNVOTE could very well decide whether the Clintons take up residence in the White House once again and renew their all-out assault on our industry, and whether New York Sen. Charles Schumer (Dem.) will become the next Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate. So while we savor our accomplishments of this past year, we need to join together as an industry in 2016 and work to ensure that our industry not only survives, but continues to grow and prosper.

D.C. OFFICE IN FULL SWING ➤ Last

year, 2015, was the first full year of the expanded NSSF Washington, D.C., Government Relations office. After a successful SHOT Show, it didn’t take long for our team to come into its own as it embarked on its first full year in operation. In February, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) issued its armor-piercing “framework” proposal that, among

14 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS ❚ JANUARY 2016

other things, sought to ban the sale of M855 “green tip” ammunition—ammunition that’s popular for target shooting in modern sporting rifles—by repealing its 30-year-old “sporting purpose” exemption. NSSF led the fight to stop ATF’s regulatory overreach by educating our allies in Congress. We also brought national media attention to the issue, and helped rally grassroots gun owners, who sent ATF a record 311,000 comments. By mid-March, ATF had withdrawn the proposal. Unfortunately, ATF continues to sit on more than 30 “sporting purpose” exemption applications for alternative rifle hunting ammunition. In October, Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX) introduced the NSSFsupported Alternative Ammunition Manufacturing Act (H.R. 3802) to help ensure ammunition manufacturers gain the certainty needed to produce alternative types of ammo. The measure requires the ATF to issue a ruling within 60 days

of receiving an exemption application. In April, our Washington, D.C., office hosted our most successful and well-attended Congressional Fly-In yet. More than 50 executives from NSSF leading companies attended. The Fly-In is one of the most important tools in our government relations toolbox that is used to advance our industry’s federal legislative agenda. The spring of 2015 also saw the reintroduction of the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act, the most significant pro-sportsmen bill in a generation. Among other provisions, the bill would provide more flexibility to state fish and game agencies in their use of Pittman-Robertson excise tax dollars for constructing and maintaining public shooting ranges, just as it works to increase access and opportunities for hunters and target shooters on public lands. The House version of the bill, known as the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act

of 2015, was also introduced. We remain hopeful the bill can soon move forward in the Senate in a bipartisan fashion during 2016.

STOPPING THE CHOKE ➤ Working

closely with Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO), NSSF helped force the Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) to cease its discriminatory, anti-firearms-industry program known as Operation Choke Point, which coerced banks and financial services institutions to withhold services or refuse to do business with members of our industry. NSSF’s efforts to stop discrimination against members of the firearms and ammunition industry were further expanded with the introduction of the Firearms Industry Nondiscrimination Act (FIND Act) in several states. The FIND Act would make it an unlawful business practice to refuse to provide goods or services solely

B Y L AW R E N C E K E A N E , N S S F S E N I O R V I C E P R E S I D E N T A N D G E N E R A L C O U N S E L

because a business or individual is engaged in the lawful commerce of firearms or ammunition products. NSSF will continue to work toward passage of the FIND Act on the state front in 2016. One of our proudest moments came when Maryland enacted NSSFsupported legislation and repealed its failed ballistics imaging law. NSSF had previously succeeded in getting New York’s system repealed in 2012. The victory in Maryland brought to a close a failed gun control experiment that never solved a single crime, but cost our industry and taxpayers millions of dollars. Today, “firearms microstamping” and so-called “smart guns” are touted by gun control groups as a gun violence panacea, just like these same groups described ballistics imaging 15 years ago. NSSF continued to make progress in our ongoing FixNICS campaign, when Vermont became the 16th state to pass NSSF’s FixNICS language. This language requires the state to report to NICS those records documenting that someone is a prohibited person. Many don’t realize it, but Colonial-era “blue laws” still on the books in several Eastern states make it illegal to hunt on Sundays. But the NSSF-led Sunday Hunting Coalition, using economic impact and common sense, scored another important victory this year when North Carolina changed its law to allow for Sunday hunting. In 2016, the Sunday Hunting Coalition will continue its

effort to repeal the remaining “blue laws” in states like West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maine. It will take time and effort, but we will not be deterred.

nearly 800,000 suppressors in circulation and consumer demand growing by more than 30 percent a year, NSSF has taken a greater role in supporting efforts to legalize the ownership and use of suppressors for recreational shooting, self-defense, and hunting. In 2015 alone, three states legalized the use of suppressors for all lawful hunting, bringing the total to 37 states that allow hunting with suppressors. Additionally, Minnesota and Vermont legalized the ownership and use of suppressors; the addition of these two states now makes it legal to own and use suppressors in 41 states. NSSF will continue to work toward normalizing the use of suppressors, as well as reducing the paperwork and inherent delays, with the ultimate goal of having suppressors removed from National Firearms Act regulations and simply be regulated like non-NFA firearms. NSSF achieved some important victories in the courtroom during 2015. After a long battle, NSSF prevailed in preventing the Center for Biological Diversity and similar antihunting organizations from pursuing their goal of having the EPA ban traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control

Act. The U.S. Court of Appeals ruled against the CBD, holding that ammunition is beyond the EPA’s regulatory reach. In late November, Congress further clarified that the EPA does not have authority to regulate ammunition and its components. One of the gun control community’s ever-evolving tactics is to push for more gun control at the local level. That’s why NSSF, along with one of its member retailers, joined forces with the NRA and Second Amendment Foundation to challenge the City of Seattle’s latest attempt to skirt the Washington State firearms preemption statute. In the summer of 2015, Seattle passed a firearms and ammunition tax ordinance that would levy a $25 tax on the sale of every firearm, and a tax ranging from $.02 to $.05 on each round of ammunition sold at retail. The purpose of the tax is to drive retailers out of business and impose a Second Amendment “poll tax.” We filed a summary judgment motion in November.

A POSITIVE FUTURE ➤ Without

question, NSSF members are benefitting from our enhanced presence on Capitol Hill. The D.C. press corps now routinely seeks out NSSF for comment on legislative and regulatory developments that affect our industry. And NSSF is now frequently referred to as the nation’s second most powerful gun rights group, even as liberal anti-gun media outlets wrongly refer to the

National Rifle Association as the “corporate gun lobby.” NRA—the most powerful lobbying group in the nation on any issue— represents its individual members, a membership that includes virtually all of us who work in the industry (and if you’re not an NRA member, you should be). But, as you know, the NSSF, as the trade association for America’s firearms, ammunition, hunting, and shooting sports industry, is “The Voice of Industry” on Capitol Hill and in state capitals all across America. NSSF is proud to be the “corporate gun lobby.” Protecting our industry is why the NSSF formed a Political Action Committee several years ago, which we know will be very active in 2016. To learn more about the NSSF PAC, go to NSSFPAC.org.

In 2016, NSSF will expand its #GUNVOTE campaign to encourage gun owners, hunters, and sportsmen across the country to register to vote, to learn where the candidates stand on the Second Amendment and conservation issues we all care deeply about, and, come Election Day, to #GUNVOTE. Description of Business: “The heritage of

Browning dates back to 1878, with John M. Browning’s first firearm design. From that date forward, the Browning name has been associated with some of the most significant gun designs in the history of firearms development. From military standards such as the 1911, BAR, and 50 BMG to the classic sporting arms of the Superposed and Auto-5, Browning has been a leader in quality and innovation. Today, that heritage lives on in the modern designs of the X-Bolt, 1911-22, and 380, and the Citori, Maxus, and A5, as well as a wide range of clothing, knives, lights, safes, and accessory products. When our own field research, focus groups, and case studies are supported with findings from NSSF, we know we’re on the right path. This allows us to target specific markets and segments with confidence. Some of our most recent successful product launches are a testament to good research. Finding niche markets, oversaturated markets, gaps in product offerings, and so on, are huge pieces of the puzzle in deciding how to develop products and bring them to market. Traditional Ammo Gets Protection

T

he National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) hailed Congressional passage of legislation that precludes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from asserting Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) authority over ammunition and its component parts. A top legislative priority for NSSF, this important provision was included in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015, which President Obama signed into law in late November. In recent years, anti-hunting organizations have been trying to force the EPA to issue a regulation under TSCA to ban ammunition made with lead components. Had they prevailed, it would have resulted in detrimental impacts on countless manufacturing facilities and increased costs to the

Department of Defense. TSCA jurisdiction also would have resulted in considerable reductions to the excise taxes ammunition manufacturers pay—a critical source of wildlife and habitat conservation funding. “This important amendment to the Toxic Substance Control Act demonstrates the continued ability of Congress to unite, on a bipartisan basis, behind a shared commitment to enhanc-

ing our hunting and recreational shooting heritage while also protecting jobs in an important sector of our economy,” said Lawrence Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Our industry owes a debt of gratitude to a number of longtime champions of this effort, including Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain and Sens. Jeff Miller. “As Co-Chair of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus and sponsor of the Sportsmen’s Heritage Recreational Enhancement Act of 2015, which includes this measure, I am committed to preserving and enhancing sportsmen-led conservation,” Rep. MEDIA TRAINING: EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED ➤ TUESDAY,

JANUARY 19, 1:30–4:00 P.M., LANDO BALLROOM, VENETIAN ROOM 4302

The media can be friend or foe—and often you won’t know which when they pay you an unexpected visit. Are you ready when the local TV news affiliate shows up to cover a human-interest story on a rash of home break-ins and a rise in gun sales? What about when a national news outlet calls and says they want your take on gun control and the presidential candidates? As a retailer, range owner, or manufacturer, if you don’t have a specific and decisive plan in place to work with media when they come unannounced through your front door, microphones in hand and video cameras rolling, then you need to include attending this Retailer Seminar in your 2016 SHOT Show planning. Moderated by former NBC news anchor and communications expert Ann Baldwin, this important session will teach attendees the importance of putting a written plan in place to work with media and having a designated spokesperson trained in how, when, and what questions to answer. Tricks of the trade will also be dis-

cussed—you’ll come away with a better understanding of what the media is looking for when they do surprise interviews. Attendees will have the opportunity to roleplay in camera training exercises.

FIRING LINE

Clays Crusher Winchester Super X3 makes the grade

R

ecently, I decided to get more serious about clay target shooting—particularly sporting clays—so I set out to buy a new shotgun dedicated to that particular sport. I had two main criteria: a semi-automatic action and a price tag of less than $2,000. I ended up buying something that I had not initially considered: a Winchester Super X3 Sporting.

This 12-gauge shotgun has extremely fast cycling speed, capable of firing 12 shots in just 1.442 seconds. The Grade II/III satin oil-finished walnut stock boasts cut checkering and a fully adjustable comb. Bolt, carrier, slide, and cocking handle are all nickel-plated. Both the bore and firing chamber are chrome-plated. Being a target gun, the Super X3 Sporting is chambered for 2¾-inch shells only. The magazine holds up to four rounds. The front sight of the gun is a Truglo Tru-Bead fiber-optic, with interchangeable light pipes of various colors. The ported, ribbed barrel’s midbead is white. Five InvectorPlus screw-in choke tubes (extended signature) come standard: Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved/ Modified, and Light Full. Also included is a T-shaped choketube wrench. The recoil pad is a black Pachmayr Decelerator, and the shotgun has an ambidextrous cross-bolt safety. A drop-out trigger group allows for easy cleaning. The barrel is .742-inch backbored. According to Winchester, research and testing have shown that .742 inch is the ideal interior barrel diameter for a 12-gauge, ensuring tight and consistent patterns. Any larger and gases blow by the shot cup, reducing pellet velocity. Too small and pellets are deformed as they pass through the forcing cone of the barrel, causing poor ballistic performance. 20 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS ❚ JANUARY 2016

Three barrel lengths are available: 28, 30, and 32 inches. This gun tips the scales at anywhere from 7 pounds 6 ounces to 7 pounds 10 ounces, depending upon which barrel you choose. (I chose the 30-inch barrel.) The aluminum-alloy receiver helps shave weight.

Fast Action ➤ A fitted, hard-plastic case (red ABS) comes standard and is embossed with the Winchester logo. The Winchester Super X-3 Sporting has an SRP of $1,699, which makes it a moderately priced clays shotgun. If you are familiar with the Winchester SX2, the forerunner of this shotgun, you’ll find that the Super X3’s waist diameter of the grip and the diameter of the forearm have both been reduced. These new dimensions not only accommodate shooters with smaller hands, they also give every shooter better control. The new, trim forearm is one of the slimmest available on a 12-gauge gasoperated autoloader. While at the gun shop, what initially attracted me to this shotgun was the way it easily came up to my shoulder and naturally aligned with my dominant eye. The gun just felt right—every time I shouldered it. I’m getting older and wanted to reduce felt recoil as much as possible, which is why I chose a semi-auto. I’d never owned one before; I was a dedicated over/

under guy and feared that the change to another action might cause some shooting problems. But the transition has not only been smooth but really a lot of fun. I truly enjoy shooting this shotgun. I am breaking more targets than ever and am more than pleased with the gun’s soft-shooting, reliable performance. It's been such a joy to shoot that I find myself spending more time at the range. On the range, one advantage of the natural feel of the shotgun is that it allows me to concentrate on targets and not have to unduly concern myself with gun mount. It’s basically just point and shoot—see the birdie, shoot the birdie. Another feature I’ve come to appreciate is the quick cycling speed of the action. It’s so fast that you don’t get that “clunk-clunk” sensation of the bolt moving back and forth in front of your face as you do with with some other autoloaders. The only tweak I plan to make to the gun is having the slop taken out of the trigger. But that will be a simple $50 fix from a competent gunsmith. Shotgun shooting boils down to fit and feel, and the Winchester Super X3 Sporting has both. This shotgun will shoot where you point it, and the fact that it looks classy while doing so is icing on the cake. And that fitted case, embossed with the Winchester logo? It tells other shooters that I mean business. (winchesterguns.com)

Winchester's Super X3 Sporting is a reasonably priced semiauto target shotgun. One of its strongest selling points is its fast cycling time.

Looking for the Perfect Duck Gun Our intrepid shopper sets down in Springfield, Missouri

Doesn’t this point to the importance of teaching your sales associates how to sell all guns in stock? Fortunately, this expert knew about duck hunting. He showed me a small line of duck guns, from American to Italian models. He knew which chokes

nal in strength and reliability. For 2016, Cimarron has three to choose from. The Model 71 Premium 24 is chambered in .45/70, has a case-hardened receiver, checkered walnut stock, sling-swivel studs, and a 24-inch barrel. SRP: $1,940.21. The Model 71 Classic 24 is similar to the Premium but with a blued steel receiver. Cimarron’s Model 71 Hogzilla Killa is a bit of a departure from its cowboy roots. It has a 19-inch barrel and is chambered for the .45/70. But, this carbine is fitted with a barrel-mounted rail to allow for the mounting of an extended-eye-relief scout-style scope. Advertised as a feral-hog slayer, this rifle has a plethora of uses worldwide. SRP: $1,846.48. More in line with its old Western firearms heritage, Cimarron is also offering an exquisite side-lock muzzleloader. The Santa Fe Hawken, made by D. Pedersoli, is perfect for target shooters and hunters. Cimarron offers this model with a fancy maple stock, and the rifle features a custom shallow-groove fasttwist, Sharps-style barrel for making long shots or a more traditional deepgrooved and slow-twist barrel for round or mini-ball shooting. Available in .50 caliber only. SRP: $1,418. (cimarron-firearms.com)

CMMG î CMMG has unveiled the Mk47 lineup featuring a KRINK muzzle device. Similar to the original Mk47 MUTANT design, these new rifles are built around the 7.62x39mm cartridge and feature a shortened AR-10-size bolt-carrier

group that is paired with a unique upper and lower receiver to minimize weight and increase ergonomics. One of the primary benefits of the Mk47 design is its ability to accept existing AK magazines and drums. Three models are available. SRP: $1,550 to $1,750. (cmmginc.com)

CZ-USA î CZ has no shortage of new rifles for 2016. Its rimfire category has 10 new entries alone. The model 455 bolt-action additions include four Varmint Evolution variants, two in .17 HMR and two in .22 LR. Both sport the radically shaped laminated stock available with either a coyote or gloss pink finish. There are also two Varmint Precision Trainer Camo Suppressor Ready models in .22 LR. One has a 16.5-inch barrel, the other a 24-inch tube. Both come with a fiveround detachable magazine and a Manners stock. The semi-automatic 512 series has four additions, two in .22 LR and two in .22 Magnum. The carbine version—available in both chamberings— has a black beechwood stock, a five-round detachable magazine, and tangent rear sights, and is suppressor ready with a 1/2x28 thread pattern. The semi-auto 512 American comes with a walnut stock and a five-round detachable magazine. New centerfire rifle introductions in the compact 527 line include a 527 American in .221 Remington Fireball with a detachable five-round magazine. The second new 527 is in the Varmint configuration and is chambered for the .17 Remington. In the 557 Sporter line, CZ has added two short-action offer-

ings. Both have walnut stocks and four-round detachable magazines. New chamberings are the .243 and .308 Winchester. There is also a new model 557 Varmint in .308 Winchester. For the tactical-minded or law enforcement, CZ’s new model 557 Urban Counter Sniper should turn some heads. Its compact build is designed to excel at engaging targets within 400 yards. Chambered in .308 Winchester, the short 16-inch barrel only sacrifices 150 fps compared to a standard barrel, and its threeprong flash hider serves as a QD for a suppressor. The carbon-fiber composite Manners stock provides a rock-solid platform without weighing the rifle down, and it comes with a detachable box magazine and oversize bolt handle. The Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Carbine line from CZ has five additions. All are chambered for the 9mm Luger and come with a threaded muzzle in the 1/2x28 pattern. Two come with a faux suppressor and two with a muzzle brake. The Scorpion EVO S1 Pistol has a flat dark earth finish. It has a threaded muzzle, too, but is shipped without a faux suppressor or brake. The CZ model 805 Bren S1 Carbine has four additions to the lineup. All are chambered for the .223 Remington/5.56x45 NATO and come with a threaded muzzle in the 1/2 x 28 thread pattern. These carbines are shipped with either a 10- or 30-round magazine, and two come in basic black and two in flat dark earth. (cz-usa.com)

CIMARRON

î Cimarron has added the 1883 deluxe shotgun and the 1889 standard shotgun to its line of double-barrel scatterguns. The Cimarron 1883 and 1889 shotguns are modern inside but period outside. They do not replicate or copy any specific firearm; however, features of original shotguns from the Cimarron collection inspired these pieces. The most striking visual feature of the deluxe is the engraved sidelock-style construction. These shotguns, with 18- and 20-inch barrels in .410, and with 22-inch barrels in 12-gauge,

andguns remain the top-selling firearms in America. Even though manufacturers are having no problems selling revolvers and pistols, they have stepped up for 2016 to keep customers happy with new models and innovations, primarily in suppressor-ready variants with the inclusion of semiauto versions of machine-styled pistols.

CIMARRON

î Cimarron offers firearms used to tame the frontier in Texas and the American West. Often regarded as the leader in Cowboy Action authenticity, Cimarron has supported Cowboy Action Shooters since 1987. For 2016, Cimarron continues that tradition with three new pistols in the Eliminator series. Cimarron’s new Eliminator Octagon features a 4.75-inch octagonal barrel, checkered Army-style grips, and a pre-war frame. It also has a 25 percent shorter hammer stroke for fast, easy cocking, which is a real plus for one-handed (duelists and mounted) shooters. It has a case-hardened/blued-frame/ cylinder assembly and is

available in .357 Magnum/.38 Special and .45 Long Colt. SRP: $778.70 Cimarron’s new singleaction Eliminator Competition features a 4.75inch round barrel, checkered grips, and a pre-war frame. Like the Eliminator Octagon, it has a 25 percent shorter hammer stroke and a Cowboy Comp U.S. action job. The Eliminator Competition is available in a color case-hardened/bluedframe/cylinder assembly or stainless steel. It’s also available with a standard or low, wide hammer. Available in .357 Magnum/.38 Special and .45 Long Colt. SRP: $713.70. Cimarron’s new Eliminator Thunderstorm is

available with a 3.5- or 4.75inch barrel and checkered grips. Its specially designed Thunderstorm hammer is low and wide for comfortable no-slip cocking. The hammer—along with the 25 percent shorter hammer stroke and Cowboy Comp Thunderstorm action job— makes it an ideal competition gun for mounted shooters. The Eliminator Thunderstorm is available in standard blue or polished stainless steel in .45 Long Colt. SRP: $747, blue; $973, stainless. Cimarron is also offering four laser-engraved revolvers from Pietta, Italy. All are great looking and affordably priced. They are available in two finishes: nickel and old

silver frame (OSF). OSF is a two-tone finish, where the barrel, cylinder, and grip assembly are blued and the frame is left in white for a polished steel finish. There are also two grip options—a poly-ivory grip or checkered walnut. SRP: starts at $648.70. (cimarron-firearms. com)

that is threaded 18x1 to accept the factory flash hider, but also threaded 1/2x28 underneath the flash hider to allow for the easy addition of a suppressor or aftermarket muzzle device. The folding stock goes on quickly and easily, and is sold in a 922(r) compliance kit so you have all the required parts to stay on the up-and-up. An 11-inch Picatinny rail rides on top, and aluminum adjustable sights are fitted from the factory. Chambered only in 9mm Luger. CZ’s Bren 805 S1 Pistol has an 11-inch barrel and has proven a popular SBR candidate for customers wanting to convert it into an NFA firearm. Those who don’t wish to register with the ATF can always equip it with CZ’s adapter kit, which allows easy installation of aftermarket arm braces or other devices meant to help stabilize large-format pistols. Chambered in .223/5.56 and using the STANAG magazine from the AR16/M16, it easily accepts optics and lights on its top and bottom Picatinny rails. In the last few years, there has been a huge spike in requests for suppressor-

ready firearms, and for 2016, CZ has more than doubled its threaded-pistol lineup. Clad in an urban-gray color, CZ’s limited-edition Urban Gray Suppressor Ready Series of pistols come with a set of high suppressor sights equipped with tritium lamps front and rear. Extendedcapacity magazines boost the capacity on all but the SP-01 by two rounds. Some models, like the P-01 Omega and the 75 Omega, are completely new. Variants include a P-09 with a 12+1 capacity, a P-07 with 17+1 capacity, a 75 SP-01 and a 75 B that hold 18 cartridges, and a 75 P-01 with a capacity of 16+1. SRP: $537 to $723. Recognizing that practicing with .22-rimfire ammunition is less expensive and just plain fun, CZ has added a new Kadet Kit to the line. Designed to swap onto current P-07s and older P-07 Duty pistols, the P-07 Kadet Kit enables shooters to train using cheaper .22 LR ammo. With a 10-round magazine and fully reciprocating-slide function, shooting the P-07 Kadet Kit will be identical to shooting the host pistol in factory form. SRP: $237.

magnum research The new Cerakote Tungsten Desert Eagle is offered in either the .50AE or .44 Magnum.

Turning the Tactical Sport up a notch, the CZ 75 Tactical Sport Orange borrows a number of design features from the Czechmate and incorporates a few of its own. With the slimmer trigger guard, revised grip geometry, and finer checkering from the Czechmate frame, it adds a thumb stop and fully adjustable target sights. With the same long slide and full-length dust cover as the standard TS, it also shares the single-actiononly trigger, giving it an incredibly light pull and short reset. SRP: $1,784. (czusa.com)

DAN WESSON î With more folks than ever choosing to hunt with a handgun and the continuing resurgence of the 10mm cartridge, Dan Wesson decided it was time to bring the heat. Dan Wesson’s first long-slide 1911, the Bruin, was born to hunt. The long slide means a long sight radius, and the 6-inch barrel allows full-power 10mm loads as much time as possible to use their powder charge. Fully adjustable tritium sights ensure that when shooting hours arrive,

JANUARY 2016

you’ll be able to see the sights. Additionally, there’s a tritium/fiber-optic combo front sight to make sure the front glows day or night. SRP: $2,064, .45 ACP; $2,194, 10mm. With suppressors becoming more and more mainstream, another interesting pistol from Dan Wesson is the Discretion. With its match-grade stainless barrel, which is extended and threaded, it is suppressorready out of the box. Its aggressively ported slide, serrated trigger, and competition-inspired hammer give it a radical look. High tritium sights allow for sighting over the top of most pistol suppressors. Available in 9mm Luger and .45 ACP. SRP: $2,142. Dan Wesson has seen a steady increase in requests for a non-bobbed Valor Commander, and for 2016, it has delivered. What sets the Valor apart from the rest of Dan Wesson’s 1911 lineup is the sheer amount of time spent hand-polishing, handfitting, and finishing. Not only do they get the best quality parts, they get the most individual attention of any model Dan Wesson builds. It is arguably the best sized .45 ACP or 9mm Luger 1911 for concealed carry. SRP: $1,688 to $2,012. Sharing the features that make the Dan Wesson Valkyrie one of its most popular concealed-carry 1911s, the Valkyrie Commander simply adds an aluminum Commander-size frame, making it ideal for those who need a bit more purchase than an Officersize frame allows. The Valkyrie Commander is available in 9mm Luger and .45 ACP with a black duty/ anodized finish. SRP: $2,012.

In Dan Wesson’s efforts to appease 1911 aficionados, it has not forgotten wheel gunners. The Dan Wesson 715 Pistol Pack is as it was before—designed and built to be the most accurate, rugged, and versatile revolver on the market. This year sees the revival of the Pistol Pack, famous for its swappable barrels. The Pistol Pack is shipped with 4-, 6-, and 8-inch barrel/shroud assemblies, in the modern heavy vent shroud profile. A custom Dan Wesson hard case, with compartments for the additional barrel assemblies and a factory-supplied barrel wrench kit, is included. SRP: $1,688. (cz-usa.com)

Doppler Design Hornady’s new proprietary bullet tip can take the heat

A

n ammo company that is deeply invested in polymer-tip bullets says the plastic that some manufacturers are using at the top of their projectiles is hurting aerodynamics at long distances. Sounds like a typical advertising claim, doesn’t it? But in this case, Hornady Manufacturing admits that even their own designs are at fault.

“We had it wrong, too,” says Dave Emary, lead ballistician at Hornady, known for developing the A-MAX and SST bullets and .17HMR cartridge. “Their tips are melting. Our tips are melting, too.” Manufacturers have been putting polymer tips on hunting bullets since before Nosler turned out the Ballistic Tip in the 1970s. The plastic helps expansion and aerodynamics, and is far easier to produce than a metallic spire point. But it turns out that the polymer or nylon that the Winchesters, Noslers, and Hornadys of the world are using on long-range bullets deforms, melts, and otherwise changes shape in flight. Hornady engineers likened the high-speed violence to the Space Shuttle’s intense friction 52 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS ❚ JANUARY 2016

on re-entering the atmosphere. With some tinkering in the lab, and trial and error at the range, Emary came up with a new polymer formula—and he’s not sharing the ingredients. And the Heat Shield Tips are now yielding dramatic improvements in long-range performance. For example, Hornady’s 6.5mm 140-grain A-MAX bullet with the old tips has a BC of .545. All things being equal, with the new Heat Shield Tip, the BC jumps to .610, according to their testing. Hornady will be selling these bullets, called ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag, eXpanding), in a cartridge line called Precision Hunter and ELD-X Match. The initial offering will be for eight long-range calibers, from 6.5mm Creedmoor

A redesigned proprietary polymer tip yields a big increase in accuracy.

to .300 Rem. Ultra Mag. Prices are expected to be in the neighborhood of $40 per box of ammo in the .30-caliber range. Where did this lightbulb moment come from? It came from shooting at the range. In 2011, Hornady was conducting final testing on a new long-range bullet. Around that time, the company acquired Doppler radar, which gave its engineers a detailed picture of the aerodynamics—specifically drag—of the soon-to-be-

Hornady’s new Heat Shield Tips won’t degrade at high velocities.

released bullet. The radar recorded BCs lower than they were expecting by about 15 percent. After they stopped scratching their heads, they took a closer look at the Doppler data and concluded that the bullet must actually be changing shape at different points during the flight. But why? After floating and dismissing several theories, they concluded that if a polymer-tipped bullet reached high velocities and remained there for a period of time, the plastic tip was melting. Specifically, if the bullet reached 800 degrees for more than a second or two, the radar showed a drop in speed, erratic flight, and then a plateauing after it slowed to below 2,100 fps. Will Hornady change all their bullet tips now? Not immediately. Some bullets will continue to have the traditional tips. Lighter varmint bullets, like the V-MAX, reach high speeds but lose velocity quickly, and therefore don’t show the funky flight characteristics, Hornady says. In addition, bullets used for conventional ranges—those less than about 300 yards—also don’t immediately need their tips replaced. In addition to a new tip and better accuracy, the company also redesigned the bullet jacket and bullet itself, to expand properly at close as well as long distances. “Making a long-range bullet would have been easy,” says Neal Emery of Hornady. “This is an all-range bullet.” Time on the range seemed to back up the engineers’ claims. I pulled the trigger on several .30-caliber-class rifles loaded with Precision Hunter rounds and shot tight groups, close and far. And that’s the hunting-grade bullet, not the match. No doubt about it, this is a game-changer.

Sporting UT Al’s Goods, Logan

Keeping an average of 900 firearms inventoried in 1,900 square feet, this retailer uses every inch of display space. Sales of handguns are up by nearly 15 percent compared to 2014 sales, and this retailer forecasts a good 2016. “The election should keep our sales of pistols and MSRs rising,” said manager Val Spileitt. Glocks lead the sales charts, primarily with the newer model 43s and the long-established 19s. Smith & Wesson K-frame revolvers also are on the rise, and Springfield XDMs continue to move every few days. Sales of modern sporting rifles have consistently inched up since November. Colts, Daniel Defense, and Mossbergs are all selling well.

Gun ID Boise Company, Boise

In business for more than 16 years, this store has two locations that specialize in hunting and home defense firearms. It keeps as many as 4,000 guns in inventory. The fall hunting season helped move Kimbers in .308 and .270 and Ruger All-Americans in .30/06. For winter, varmint calibers are beginning to move. Sales of MSRs are beginning to climb, owner Gary Hopper said. “We see a definite trend with MSRs on a steady path to higher prices and greater demand in the coming year,” said Hopper. Top sellers include the entire line of S&W M&P rifles. LWRC and Daniel Defense are also attracting attention. Handgun sales are climbing, especially SIG 938s and Smith Bodyguards.

Midwest

Cabin Fever MN Sporting Goods, Victoria

Located in western suburban Minneapolis, this 6,000-square-foot storefront stocks bait, tackle, and more than 600 firearms. It stays open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sales of Glock 43s and 42s have increased to the point where they have overtaken last year’s highest sellers, the Springfield XD and XDM. “Our handgun sales inched up this fall earlier than usual, and with some local crime issues our handgun numbers are strong,” said owner Jeff Byrne. December saw high traffic on .22s, with 10/22s and target pistols leading the way. Savage Mark IIs in both .22 and .17HMR are in demand. Sporting rifles are slowing; however, varmint versions of the Tikka

T3 and the Savage Model 10 are still crossing the counter. Sales of MSRs are steady.

Little Joe’s KS Pawn & Gun West, Kansas City

Keeping about 200 guns in stock, this family-run pawn and gun shop has two locations and specializes in used rifles and handguns. Glock Model 43s and 19s are holding the top spot for both new and used guns. Smith Bodyguards are also moving quickly. Traditional hunting rifles keep the register warm. Top movers here are Remington 700 Varmint specials and a few .270s BDLs. In the MSR category, M&P Sports are increasing. “MSRs are not a primary focus for our store, but they are picking up,” said manager Sean Boyd.

Jerry’s Outdoor CO Sports, Grand Junction

This mountain retailer uses 11,000 square feet to stock more than 1,200 firearms. It also has large inventories of safes, holsters, and reloading equipment. Handgun sales are very strong. Smith M&P Shields are in the top spot; SIG 938s and 238s are just behind. MSRs are turning multiple units daily. Smith M&P Sports have posted the highest numbers, but ArmaLite is also getting attention. “MSR sales are certainly getting less price-sensitive, and we are keeping up with demand,” said owner Jerry Stehman. Savage Axis bolts in .22/250 are gaining steam among winter varmint hunters. Ammo stocks are good, with the exception of .22 Mag rimfire.

County MO Osage Guns, Belle

Located in mid-Missouri, about 60 miles north of Fort Leonard Wood, this retailer keeps more than 3,000 guns on the floor. It has seven employees who oversee 5,000 square feet of retail space. SIG SAUER holds a commanding lead, and the new Legion line, especially Models 516 and 916, all posted strong turns. “Our overall business has leveled out since Memorial Day,” owner Edward Pepper said. “But we don’t count on the spikes. Instead we deliver great service that we can make a profit on.” Sales of sporting rifle were off during the fall, though a few Kimbers and higher-grade Remington 700s saw turns. Sales of MSRs are steady, but not increasing.

Island PA Firearms, Pittsburgh

With only 800 square feet of floor space, this retailer also uses the ceiling to display more than 500 firearms in the store. At the handgun counter, activity is notably higher than at this time last year. Glock 9mm and .40s hold the high ground; SIG .357s and S&W 686s are right behind. Ammo stocks just may be the best in two years. “We finally have .22 Magnum ammo in volume, and overall .22 rifle sales were great during Christmas,” said owner Wayne Lyken. MSRs are turning at a rate of about one a week, mostly Smith Sports. Shotguns are turning consistently, with tactical Mossberg 500s, Remington 870s, and a few Savage youth models crossing the counter.

South

TX McClelland Guns, Dallas

Family owned since 1972, this 8,000-square-foot retailer averages 1,000 guns in inventory and employs five gunsmiths. Handguns are selling well; hot sellers include Springfield 1911s, Para Pro Customs in .45, and Ruger LCR .38s. Smith & Wesson 642s also are moving well. Shotguns are winding down, with a few Beretta A300s and 400s crossing the counter. MSRs are selling daily, mostly DPMS Bull 20s and Bushmaster XM-15s. There are also a large number of custom-shop hog guns on order. “Our custom rifles sales continue to increase in scale. We see it as a great way to interact with our customers, creating a strong bond. You build them a gun they love, and they come back,” said owner Ron Rutledge.

Enck’s Gun PA Barn, Newmanstown

River City KY Firearms, Louisville

This small-town dealer is south of Asbury Park and stocks more than 400 guns in 5,000 square feet. Waterfowl guns are still moving, including Benelli Super Black Eagles and a few Browning A5s. Sales of MSRs have increased to four a week. Smith M&Ps are the top sellers, but Adams Arms and Rebel Arms are right behind. “We are starting to see demand increase for MSRs, and hopefully with distributor inventories in good shape this election time, we will have some pricing stability,” said general manager Tim Carey. Handguns sales are steadily inching up. The SIG 220 10mm gets the most attention. Other highdemand handguns include nearly every Smith & Wesson revolver in stock.

This small, independent pawnshop is located 40 miles east of Fort Smith off of Interstate 40. It stocks an average of 250 firearms and has two employees. The Glock 43 and the SIG 220 are the two strongest sellers at the store. Springfield XDMs in 9mm are in the third spot. Demand for MSRs is steady, but didn’t increase during 2015. “We really haven’t seen an uptick in rifle sales and it surprises us. That said, we are expecting demand to rise in the next 60 days,” said counter salesperson Kelly Elam. Savage Model 10 Predators and Remington 700 varmints are doing well as cold temperatures settle in. Ammo stocks are good; however, specialty .22 Mag is still hard to keep on the shelf.

This store averages 400 firearms in stock. Handgun sales are strong, with high inventories of product. Ruger LC9s and Glock 43s and 26s pulled excellent numbers before and after the holidays. Cowboy Action revolvers are in good inventory, with Ruger Vaqueros topping the list. Ruger 10/22s had one of the strongest holiday seasons on record. “It’s nice to see demand climbing, and for the first time in years, I have almost no shortages,” said owner Bob Enck. “Right now I can get just about anything my customers are looking for.” Sales of MSRs are up, turning about three a week. DPMS and Smith M&P Sports see the most attention. High-end Lancer Rifles also are selling.

This dealer stocks an average of 300 handguns and keeps up to three employees busy. Handgun sales are at record highs. “We have seen steady increases in demand for MSRs and handguns since the Paris terrorist event,” said owner Derrick Myers. Although S&W Bodyguards and Shields have sold well, the December price drop on Ruger LCPs sent turns through the roof. Other brisk sellers include M&P models and Taurus PT22s. MSR demand is up nearly 200 percent from late November, with multiple turns daily. Top brands include M&P Sports and Ruger 556s. There is also high traffic on ATI mil-specs from Davidson’s. Ammo stocks are better than they’ve been across the board.
