Tacoma is known as an entertainment destination. From cultural attractions to outdoor pursuits, the city offers an array of options. Consider dividing your time between culture, shopping and outdoor recreation. Start by learning about local history at the Washington State History Museum. Take a stroll across the Chihuly Bridge of Glass to view $12 million worth of ornamental glass in the Seafoam Pavilion and the Venetian Wall. The bridge leads to the Museum of Glass, a world-renowned contemporary artist hot spot, where the craft of creating works from molten glass happens live.
To observe natural beauty in the heart of the city, visit Wright Park and the1908 Seymour Botanical Conservatory, one of only three such Victorian greenhouses on the west coast. Enjoy 500 species of exotic and fragrant flowers, foliage and an on-site gift shop.
Taking in the museums builds up the appetite, and you’re in luck! There are several spots to eat right on nearby Pacific Ave: Indochine Cafe, Pacific Grill and Harmon Brewery are all local favorites. After lunch, head north to the Tacoma Art Museum. Founded in 1935, the museum has a permanent collection of some 3200 artworks by European, American and Asian artists of the last two centuries.
At Bella Balls, you can choose from an extensive selection of hand blown glass balls: these pieces are unique and create a remarkable story. Pause for a spot of tea at the Healing Garden Tea Room or for lunch at the Hub Restaurant; their sweet potato fries are delicious.

dozen specialty gardens. The Japanese, Rose and Rhododendron gardens are a few favorites. You can also tour the Living History Museum, a replica of a Hudson Bay fur trading post with docents who reenact life in 1855. Camp 6 Logging Exhibit Museum tells the story of Washington’s steam logging industry which thrived from 1880 to 1950. A Night on the Town Looking for performing arts? Outstanding shows are presented at the Broadway Center for Performing Arts and its affiliates, the Pantages Theater, the Rialto and Theater on the Square. The Broadway Center is proud to provide a vital home to eight local arts organizations which form the core of the performing arts coalition in the south Puget Sound region: among them are the Northwest Sinfonietta, the Puget Sound Revels, and the Tacoma City Ballet.

LOCAL FAVORITE MAKES TOP TRAVEL CHOICE menu includes almost every burger VARSITY GRILL The variation ever thought of, both chicken 1114 Broadway, Tacoma (253) 627-1229 varsitygrill.com
With its casual, bustling atmosphere and walls studded with ten plasma televisions, Varsity Grill is the place to be on game day—or on any day. With generous portions of enticing food, this sports bar is an excellent locale for lunch or to unwind after a busy day. For starters, try one of the two signature items. Buffalo chicken strips are fried to a golden brown and tossed in homemade wing sauce. Served with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing, this classic appetizer is a small meal in itself. Sour cream and guacamole accompany Varsity nachos; crisp tortilla chips are smothered with pepper jack and cheddar cheeses, tomatoes, green onions, and your choice of chicken or beef. The full bar features a rotating selection of domestic and microbrews; just ask your server what’s currently available. Inclined to sample a new specialty cocktail? The menu offers close to a dozen signature drinks. The grapefruit Collins is a blend of Finlandia Grapefruit vodka, Pama and sweet and sour. A hint of grapefruit with a pomegranate undertone make it tart and invigorating. One of their biggest sellers—both literally and figuratively—is the Varsity burger. This diner chose to make the
double patty burger a knife and fork affair! This American classic is made with one pound of fresh ground beef, two slices of cheddar, and two huge slices of applewood smoked bacon, all topped with an onion ring and blue cheese dressing. Served with some of the crispiest, best fries around, this is definitely a meal for a hearty appetite. A fresh salmon filet is basted in garlic herb butter and grilled to moist, succulent perfection. The accompanying subtly seasoned fresh vegetables do not detract from the seafood’s distinctive, delicate attributes; nor does the rice pilaf. The natural aroma and flavor of the salmon is allowed to shine. St. Louis Ribs are slow smoked until falling-off-the-bone tender, then basted with homemade Varsity BBQ sauce; the condiment is mild—smoky and sweet. Available as a full- or half- slab, the pork is served with fries and lightly dressed coleslaw. Sandwich choices are plentiful—choose anything from a BBQ pork sandwich to a club wrap or a French dip. The eatery’s BLTA is a remake of an old classic. It’s composed of house-smoked applewood bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and mayo on a fresh croissant.
and beef. Three different cuts of choice, juicy steaks are served. The restaurant also serves up favorites like chicken penne and fish and chips. Save room for dessert! The jumbo apple turnover, made in-house, is a must-try! With its paper-thin layers of flaky filo crust, it is reminiscent of apple strudel. Encased in the tender pastry are tender apple chunks in a thick caramel-colored sauce laced with cinnamon. Served on a caramel-drizzled platter, this treat is enough for at least four people.
The eatery is close to downtown and the theatre district. With a different special or promotion every day of the week, a relaxed mood and quality fare, Varsity Grill is the place to try while you are in Tacoma. JANAE COLOMBINI

OLYMPIA left: FARMER’S MARKET right: WASHINGTON STATE CAPITAL BUILDING; by dinea norrell far right: TOLMIE STATE PARK; by jennifer boutell
Compact, culturally diverse Olympia is a progressive town blending funky, local charm, indulging any traveler’s whim. Although you can see most, if not all, of Washington’s capital in a day, it offers more points of interest than some much larger cities. At the southern tip of Puget Sound, the easily walkable, shop-lined downtown is snugly seated between both Budd and Eld Inlet Bays. Made for strolling, the business district is flanked by a park at one end and the water’s edge at the other. The better part of a day can be whiled away perusing independent shops and cafes. Counter and consumer culture happily converge here, with used bookstores and local clothiers co-existing with high-end jewelry stores and galleries. Artistically-inclined visitors will love the myriad of galleries, artisan shops and local arts and crafts vendors. We recommend starting down Capital Way and heading west on Legion.

You will pass the iron gates of Adesso and Tasty Morsels, a favorite specialty scone baker. For a stunning photo opportunity, turn down Water Street and continue past Heritage Fountain to the pier at Percival Landing. Stroll by “The Kiss”, a well-known statue on the dock. From the dock, snap a few photos for your scrapbook or holiday greeting; the majestic Olympic Mountains offer themselves as a spectacular backdrop. Continuing down the pier you will encounter Budd Bay Cafe, Dockside Bistro and Anthony’s Homeport. Olympia’s foremost attraction is the Olympia Farmer’s Market, a quintessential experience which is colorful and overflowing with fresh food and community spirit. Local farms serve up the season’s freshest harvests. Lunch options abound, whether you’re craving Asian food or bakery items for a picnic on the waterfront, which is located within minutes. The market is an excellent low cost alternative; a visit to this open air market is a must.
Cross back over Market Street to the Batdorf & Bronson Coffee House. Try their velvety iced coffee to sip as you meander back downtown. Take a moment to notice the waterfront’s timeless beauty, then make your way back into Olympia’s charming downtown district.
Best Shopping
Lined with shops, Capital and Washington are the main thoroughfares. The downtown corridor’s boutiques, art and antique dealers are ideal for shopping for that one-of-a-kind purchase. You can also browse down-toearth destinations from Red Door, a wonderful place for specialty home decor and gifts, to Belleza Ropa a mustsee clothier. Olympia’s downtown also offers antique and vintage shops; Courtyard Antique Mall and Antique Junkie offer funky accents and special vintage treasures. The former is a choice place to lunch and shop all in one location.
A Night Out On The Town
Olympia’s evening options are similarly eclectic. Stop at SWING Wine Bar for an avante-garde libation; ask for a table perched over the lake. Move to the dining room for a tempting dinner or head out to one of the top-notch restaurants in town. Cicada Restaurant and Lounge offers fresh Northwest cuisine inspired by the soulful South. Fresh beef, seafood and an endless view of the sound make Anthony’s Hearthfire Grill stand out. Mercato, another urban eatery, offers a casual setting focusing on fresh Italian fare. On a warm night all have outdoor seating. Good restaurants for families are Casa Mia’s award winning Italian Pizzeria and South Bay BBQ for ribs and chicken. After dinner pubs, jazz bars and clubs offer a variety of live music. Local theater should not be missed. The town has two reliable sources of evening entertainment. The elegant

Continued from page 17 Washington Center for the Performing Arts is the South Sound’s largest performing arts center. The facility hosts a wide variety of entertainment and cultural activities. Concerts, comedy shows and art exhibitions are among featured events. Refurbished grandeur can be found at Harlequin Productions. These stages bring compelling work from local actors and world class performers.
Exploration
As in most cities in the South Puget Sound, being downtown means you’re just a stone’s throw away from the great outdoors. In the morning, cardio buffs skip tea for a run or power walk, enjoying the paths that encircle Capital Lake. Feeling energetic? Kick things up a notch by combining the lake loop with an uphill trek across the 4th Street Bridge to the second roundabout at Seven Oars Park. Not too far beyond is the new West

Bay Park. Head back around the lake again and finish up the Heritage Park Trail, a switchback at the south end that winds uphill to the Capitol. The route offers an invigorating walk or run and amazing views. Tugboat Annie’s has an exceptional deal: two kayaks for two hours and two breakfasts for around $40.00. Reserve kayaks early so you can experience the morning marine life. Seals and bald eagles are often spotted. Skirt the water’s edge or paddle across Budd Inlet to the downtown marina or all the way across to Priest Point. Ankle biters need a break from adult pursuits? Youngsters love the Hands on Children’s Museum. The largest kid-friendly museum in southwest Washington places an emphasis on hands-on science and art education. The exhibits are designed to encourage play, interaction

LOCAL FAVORITE MAKES TOP TRAVEL CHOICE THE OYSTER HOUSE
320 4th Ave, Olympia (360) 753-7000
The oldest seafood restaurant in Washington, The Oyster House, overlooks Olympia’s Percival Landing and Budd Inlet. It’s a casual family eatery where diners can watch televised athletic events and view sports memorabilia displayed in the lobby. Dark wood and rich green colors make the dining room warm and welcoming. We began with angels on horseback—oysters wrapped in bacon, skewered and then broiled. As the shellfish cook, they curl, resembling angel wings. The smoky cured pork, sweet mollusks, and zesty cocktail sauce are a satisfying starter. Others include Cognac oysters, crab cocktail, nachos and potato skins. The house dressing is fresh ginger vinaigrette. Mixed greens come alive with flavor when combined with the spiciness of the pungent root. Pacific oysters are lightly dusted with flour and pan-fried in butter. The delicate shellfish are accompanied by tangy cocktail sauce, a lemon wedge, and choice of baked potato, rice, vegetables or fries. The grilled halibut sandwich is wellprepared, the flatfish firm and fresh. The Oyster House buys local seafood whenever possible; it’s purchased fresh seven days a week. Only oysters from Oyster Bay, procured from Olympia Oyster Company, are served here. Other seafood entrees include crab and gorgonzola tortellini, steamers, blackened salmon and coconut prawns. The extensive menu is not limited to seafood, however. Also available are burgers, sandwiches, steaks and pasta. Try the
bacon wrapped filet mignon, teriyaki chicken sandwich or baby back ribs. Salad entrées range from cobb to seafood louie to wonton chicken. A variety of tempting options are presented on the dessert tray, including mud pie, M&M fudge brownies, bread pudding with caramel sauce, cheesecake and chocolate cake. Fudgy French silk pie is decadent with a double crust—dense brownie on sugar cookie; a tunnel of caramel is hidden within the filling. Multi-layered banana poppy seed cake is slightly lemony and the flavors are enhanced by buttercream. Appropriately, the dining establishment began as an oyster culling house owned by the Olympia Oyster Company. As far back as 1859, the company shipped the delicacies to San Francisco where diners would pay $20 per plate. Eventually, the original owners started a small seafood bar in the southeast corner where oyster cocktails were served. In the 1940s, the eatery began to evolve into a larger operation. Two or three additions were completed before it was purchased and completely remodeled by the current owner, Rich Barrett, in 1996. The establishment is still patronized by loyal elderly diners who reminisce about the restaurant’s evolution. With public docking available, it’s also a popular place with boaters and families. There’s a reason The Oyster House is the oldest seafood restaurant in Washington. Fresh, generously portioned food and relaxed, casual dining with a view keep customers coming back. JANAE COLOMBINI

PUYALLUP &SUMNER far left: COURTESY OF PIONEER PARK PAVILION left: FRIENDS HAVING COFFEE right: COURTESY OF PUYALLUP FAIR
Pierce County’s second largest city, Puyallup (pewalup) is thriving with travel and fun. Abounding in art, historical attractions, antique shops, and the state’s largest fair, Puyallup has been a top tourist destination for decades. The combination of historical character, firstclass amenities and nearby attractions such as Mount Rainier make the area a playground in all seasons. Sights In A Day Start your day in Puyallup’s most dynamic public space - downtown’s main street, Meridian Avenue. This very walkable corridor offers people watching, shopping and dining choices. Start at favorite, Forza Coffee, located at the corner of East Pioneer and Meridian. The café brews the best cup of coffee in town (say hi to our favorite barista, Alex). While getting your daily caffeine fix, notice the shop flanks Pioneer Park. With a summer wading pool and playground equipment, this is a fun way to spend a morning; the park displays three local art pieces to admire. It is also home to the Puyallup
28 showcasemedialive.com
Farmer’s Market, which is one of the largest and longest-standing markets in Washington. Local farmers and craftsmen display their produce, arts and crafts, and freshly-prepared food. There are places to sit and chat and enjoy the small-town ambiance. Ready for some lunch and shopping? Head south on Meridian to some of our favorite lunch spots. At Auntee B’s you will savor generous portions of home cooked meals. Craving pizza? Track Side Pizza is your best bet. The pizzeria makes hand tossed pizza; the kids can create their own child-size pizzas to be baked, hollering “PIZZA UP!” as they’re completed. Best Shopping Puyallup is known for its “old fashioned” downtown shopping areas; many of the shops are located adjacent to one another on the city’s primary thoroughfare, Meridian Avenue.
Start shopping at 3rd Street Antiques, a 15,000 square foot mall; more than 60 vendors make it the largest antique mall in the district. Just a block over is Victoria Antiques featuring upscale antique furniture, home decor, estate jewelry, black Americana, reproduction Victorian lamp shades and period lighting. The city of Sumner is just minutes from Puyallup and offers unique shops and a downtown shopping district. You won’t want to miss The Old Cannery Furniture and Fudge Factory where you can shop, nibble fudge, watch a miniature train and take in the largest furniture store on the West Coast! Picket Fence is always a great boutique to visit; it has a fabulous selection of unique gifts through which to browse. Museums and Entertainment Meeker Mansion was built in the late 1800’s; the beautifully restored two-story home was built by Ezra Meeker, Puyallup’s founder and first mayor. Go back in
time with a tour through this historic home. Looking for evening entertainment? Don’t miss live music Fridays through Sundays at the HG Bistro. Then swing by Mama Stortini’s for an appetizer or dessert.
The Puyallup Fairgrounds is a 160-acres hub of year-long activity. Not only is it home to the state’s largest annual fair, the venue also features a concert series, A Victorian Country Christmas and other events throughout the year.
