Nearly 500 generous community members gathered for the 17th Annual Corks & Crush event for the MultiCare Good Samaritan Foundation, which benefits patients of MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital. The gala raised more than $1 million to support emergency services and access to care.

Good Samaritan Hospital’s emergency department is one of the busiest in the state. Funds from the gala will help bring improvements to the emergency department and increase access to care for families in East Pierce County.

Six Appeal to perform at the Washington Center

On October 13, Six Appeal will bring their world-class vocal ensemble infused with impeccable comedic timing to the Washington Center for Performing Arts. Swearing off instruments, the awardwinning vocal band Six Appeal takes you on a journey that spans decades of music, performing classic oldies, current chart toppers, and catchy original tunes—all sung a cappella. Featuring vocal dexterity and adventurous song selection, this remarkably talented sextet of young singers navigates multiple genres of music with a wonderfully eclectic repertoire that is guaranteed to captivate and entertain audiences of all ages.

Despite their cheeky group name, the antics of these six group members provide a good-natured atmosphere for their electrifying performance. A Six Appeal show will split your sides, feed your musical sweet tooth, and leave you wondering how in the world they pulled it off just with voices.

In the spring of 2012, Six Appeal achieved the title of National Champion at the National Harmony Sweepstakes

A Cappella Festival in San Rafael, CA. In addition to their 1st place win, they also won the award for Best Original Song as well as the coveted Audience

Favorite award. Fast-forward a few years and Six Appeal is now the reigning world-champion (for the second consecutive year) from the acclaimed Moscow Spring A Cappella Festival in

2018 andi 2019 (considered the largest a cappella festival in the world).

With members formally instructed in singing, music education, composition, and over 70 combined years of musical training and experience, Six Appeal brings a diverse arsenal of style and entertainment to the stage. Live Edge Masterpieces by Wane + Flitch

Wane + Flitch live edge wood company has been creating custom, one-of-thekind projects for clients since 2015.

Wane, a term for the live edge of a wood slab, and flitch, a lumber term for milling, is exactly what they do at the three-acre Tacoma campus.

From floating shelves to custom dining tables, epoxy pours, large-scale projects and more, owners Jon Sayre, Brett Johnson, Jeff Wolff, and an amazing staff offer unique character and quality in every design.

Within the 10,000-square-foot building space, customers can visit the showroom to learn about different wood species and colors while browsing kiln-dried slab options in the warehouse.

They also have the opportunity to visit the on-site sawmill and woodshop, where various projects are underway, oftentimes helping inspire ideas.

“Our showroom is very exploratory. It’s all about experience with us,” says Jeff Wolff, co-owner, and operations manager. “Our showroom is filled with pieces that help people visualize their next table, or furniture piece, rather than pre-made furniture for people to buy. They get to touch and see the wood.”

Besides being huge proponents of the urban lumber movement and utilizing wood from local sources like

homeowners and land clearings — where most of their slabs come from — they are open to working with clientprovided materials.

Along with a number of community collaborations, they serve residential and commercial clients as well as providing slabs and supplies for DIYers.

A portfolio of work can be found across the region. Look for the showstopper oak bar top recently completed for the new Virtue Cellars Winery in Edmonds. A conference table for Central Pierce Fire and Rescue’s new headquarters was

recently finished, and a collaborative piece is in the works for Tacoma Fire Department’s Station 11.

“There’s a lot of trust that goes into this process,” says Wolff. “We really want to make sure clients understand every stage, and things like maintenance down the line. This is an investment, and a legacy piece that is going to be around forever.”

Dr. Kelly Goodsell Named Bellarmine President

The Bellarmine Board of Directors recently announced the appointment of Dr. Kelly Goodsell as the school’s next President. “Dr. Goodsell is a collaborative leader, rooted in Jesuit ideals, with a passion for Bellarmine’s mission,” said the Bellarmine Board of Directors Chair, Zeb Madison.

Most recently, Goodsell was the Director of Bellarmine’s Academic Center of Excellence, a role in which she created, executed, and expanded a multifaceted program offering pathways of scholarship and support to all students. Rooted in her lifelong commitment to a focus on holistic education, Goodsell believes, “At Bellarmine, students can choose whatever pathway that gives them purpose and passion; we just want our students to live lives inspired by our Jesuit values.”

As a mother of four, Goodsell brings a different perspective to her new position. “I am aware of the world we live in . . . all the beauty as well as the hard.”

She added, “I know what it means to raise kids and educate our students today.” Through deep relationships, partnerships, and collaborations, Goodsell plans to lead while holding fast to the Bellarmine mission of dedication to academic excellence and development of the whole person.

Goodsell was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon attending Catholic school with her three brothers. While attending PLU, Goodsell was introduced to Tacoma as well as her husband.

Following her undergraduate degree, she spent time on an AmeriCorps assignment on the South Side of Chicago. “The time I spent in Chicago really turned me toward the field of education.” Goodsell returned to Eugene to earn her Master’s in Special Education from the University of Oregon and then her Doctorate from Seattle University in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Organizational Systems Design. She worked in various positions with the Puget Sound Educational Service District where she rose to the role of Executive Director.

Prior to working at the Puget Sound Educational Service District, Goodsell spent time with the Tacoma and Puyallup School Districts. “Working with underserved students and families has been an integral part of my life’s work. I also have deep passion and expertise for college readiness and success. At Bellarmine, we work hard to build bridges, so all students are successful in their college years and beyond.”

Founded in 1928 on the site in Tacoma that it still occupies today, Bellarmine is a Catholic college preparatory school in the Jesuit tradition of education.

1889 PRIME Steakhouse

“We intend 1889 PRIME Steakhouse to be the premier steak house in Olympia,” says Drew MacEwen, co-owner. The upscale restaurant in the heart of downtown Olympia transformed the ground floor of the Views on Fifth luxury apartment building into a stylish establishment where diners can feast on an excellent steak accompanied by a glass of wine. The menu will highlight steaks, but there are plenty of other options.

Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the expansive views of Isthmus Park with grassy lawns and views of our Capitol dome and Capitol Lake. Inside seating accommodates 135 people, with a private room available for parties up to 30 guests. During the warmer weather people can sit outside on the wrap-around patio.

The name refers to the time when Washington gained its statehood, when thenPresident Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation approving the Constitution on November 11, 1889. MacEwen is a state senator representing the 35th legislative district.

1889 PRIME will maintain its focus on Washington. Beef, produce, and wines will primarily be local and regional. Beef is being sourced from Double R Ranch, where cattle are thoughtfully raised by a network of families in the Northwest. The hand-selected beef is USDA Choice or higher marbling

levels. The business practices humane treatment of animals and ecological treatment of the earth.

The menu will evolve as Executive Chef Josh Race gets to know his customers. “I put my heart into the creation of food that puts a smile on people’s faces,” he says. Race has made a career in the restaurant business, getting an early start decades ago at the New Market Skill Center. “I’ve had great mentors along the way,” he recalls as he looks ahead to turning up the heat in his new kitchen. General Manager Nicole Andres is already known by many through her restaurant associations and business, Nicole’s Bar, also in downtown Olympia.

Keep up to date on special events such as wine tasting or a specialty jazz brunch on social media. “I look forward to welcoming everyone in,” say MacEwen. “The restaurant is a labor of love.”

Celebrity Cakes Owners Create a Sweet Legacy

Celebrity Cake Studio is a family-owned and operated artisan cake boutique in Tacoma. The family has been baking joy into all of their artistically designed cakes and desserts for 25 years. Odette D’Aniello, sister Mary Ann Quitugua and cousin Wallace Bolo (the “Baker Supreme”), are third-generation bakers who grew up in their family’s bakery on Guam.

The CEO and visionary behind the organization, Odette D’Aniello, says that they enjoy running a lean, fun, creative business. “I like the styling of wedding cakes and custom cakes — it’s our medium of art. My sister is now my partner and has been for the past 21 years. She and I are cake designers; that’s what we love to do. I’m the CEO and my sister is the COO.”

From the beginning, they decided that family was a priority. “We love to learn and we are a very warm and welcoming family-owned company. Our culture has been easygoing and we love that our kids can now also be a part of the company,” says Odette.

Designer Helped Couple Create a Striking Harborfront Home

Ready to build a dream home, retired owners Del and Lee Deide of Whistle Workwear set out to create a new home for themselves in Gig Harbor. The finished product is a 5,800-square-foot home with sweeping views of the harbor perched on the hill with show-stopping waterfront views. Even before they’d broken ground for the house’s foundation, the couple turned to Sara Bass from Signature Design Cabinetry in Tacoma.

Working closely with their son and architect Brent Deide and Harrison Homes, the team customized “every last detail” during the multiyear process to help bring the contemporary, finelytuned home to life. Throughout, a timeless, largely neutral palette plays with texture and shape in a sophisticated way, keeping the focus on the living landscape outside.

“Our vision was to have a contemporary home that would be mostly all on one level and an elevator was added for accessing the second level,” says Lee Deide. In addition, the couple envisioned a space with a white/black/tan/taupe color palette with beautiful gold accents. The kitchen is clean and sleek with a butlers pantry off the kitchen, allowing for dishes to be cleared and cleaned away while guests are still seated for a dinner party. Lee says, “My favorite aspect of the kitchen is probably the waterfall island. I like sleek things and the island waterfall is beautiful and up-to-date.”

“During the build there were challenges with the pandemic and supply chain issues, but Sara and the team at Harrison Homes did an excellent job communicating and they were wonderful to work with throughout the process,” says Lee.

Terra Blanca Winery and Estate Vineyard has an exquisite Tuscan-style winery. This location is one of the only wineries on Red Mountain to offer a full restaurant menu of mouthwatering dining options that pair well with their amazing wines all set in picturesque grounds. We recommend making reservations for lunch and a tour.

French-inspired Hedges Family Estate is a lovely spot to sit back and relax with friends while enjoying a tasting or a glass

of wine. There is a beautiful patio and a French-inspired chateau tasting room. The chateau is gorgeous and a work of art in itself.

Tip: Since no one wants to feel unsafe driving impaired, have TC Black do all the driving so you can enjoy the wineries.

It’s hard to have a bad meal in the Tri-Cities, whether you’re in the mood for comfort food, something light, or an elevated dining experience. The food scene there is amazing. Two standouts are Fiction by J. Bookwalter which offers a bookthemed dining experience. Their name offers a nod to the winery and restaurant’s book-themed wines. The restaurant has a hip vibe and a very stylish dining experience. Food is locally sourced. Award-winning Executive Chef Francisco Mendoza adheres to a truly farm-to-table philosophy in sourcing ingredients from the Pacific Northwest.

The other restaurant which is perched on the Columbia River is Budds Broiler . This approachable steakhouse specializes in premium Northwest beef complemented by Anthony’s fresh seafood, local seasonal produce, and award-winning Washington wines. PLAY

Brimming with plenty of outdoor activities, the Tri-Cities is a great place to paddleboard, bike, kayak, boat or hop aboard a luxury cruise ship.

Pedego Electric Bikes is a fun place to rent electric bikes. It’s an easy outdoor activity that the entire family can enjoy. Starting in Richland, you can ride along the Richland Riverfront Trail next to the river and connect to the Sacagawea Heritage Trail which goes for 23 miles.

Badger Mountain is a preserve that is open to the public and has quickly become one of the most popular Tri-Cities hiking trails. Hikers gain about 800 feet in elevation from base to

summit and, since sagebrush is the tallest plant, a hike to the top affords spectacular vistas of the Tri-Cities and Yakima and Columbia River Valleys.

Kayak Bateman rents kayaks to community members and visitors interested in leisure water sports and lets you enjoy the Columbia and Yakima Rivers at hourly rates. Rentals to explore the Bateman Island area come complete with everything that is needed.

Local Woman’s Story

see and suffering terrible head pain, she was able to contact her brother with the help of her small but capable toddler. Paramedics were called to assist, having to use paddles to get her racing heart back into a slower rhythm.

Following a second emergency intervention while pregnant, Maria underwent a heart ablation after her son was born. “The heart ablation sustained me for a few years, helping with my AFib, but the leaking heart valve was still an issue.” At the time, a pig valve or an artificial metal valve were her only options, so she and her family opted for lifestyle changes that included no smoking, reduced alcohol consumption, and more exercise.

Advancements in medical research surrounding heart disease treatments made all the difference in one Lakewood woman’s life. Maria Camilon-Price was diagnosed with a heart murmur at age 14 when she and her family moved from the Philippines. “During that time in my life, they told me it was likely a hereditary feature and something they said we should watch,” said Price. She added, “While it took a long time to manifest, it really took a toll on my body.”

In the mid-80s, she encountered her first battle when her heart unexpectedly started racing in downtown Tacoma. “I had no idea what was going on as I slumped in my car.” Luckily a couple found Maria and noticed her blue lips and called paramedics. Maria was put through a series of tests and worked with wonderful cardiologists that diagnosed her with a leaking heart valve and that her heart murmur was causing atrial fibrillation (AFib)—irregular or rapid heart rate.

“In the years that followed, I was able to maintain and control the symptoms of my AFib with natural coping mechanisms like controlled breathing.” But in 1998 while getting her 3-yearold son and herself ready for the day, Maria’s heart began to race and she couldn’t control it. Despite being unable to

Fast forward to 2016 when Maria, who was suffering from a sinus infection, misjudged her heart failure symptoms. That is, until she flunked a regularly scheduled angiogram. Her cardiothoracic surgeon recommended immediate surgery to fix the valve with the latest procedures, cleaning up the valve and trimming the mitral valve leaks using Gortex stiches. “Everything is going well now because generous people have given to the American Heart Association and research continues to evolve. In 1998, I would have been exposed to open heart surgery. But due to amazing research, in 2016 my procedure was much less invasive and my recovery period was greatly reduced.”

Because of her experience, Maria is a Go Red For Women Ambassador and advocates for all parents to have their children screened for heart defects. She also leads a team during the Puget Sound Heart and Stroke Walk. “This Walk is my 7th year that I have gathered my wonderful family, friends, and co-workers from the City of Tacoma to organize a team. I am a survivor and I’d like to see more survivors— especially adults.”

The Heart and Stroke Walk is a non-competitive 5K that benefits the American Heart Association. It will be held at Cheney Stadium on Saturday, October 21, 2023.

Olympia gym redefines woman-focused fitness

With group classes led by certified personal trainers, Athena is a great fit for all levels of fitness and weightlifting experience.

“What I love about Athena is that it is a safe place. The gym space can be intimidating but at Athena it’s not all about gains and personal records but more about conversations and connection,” says Nikky Castillo, an Athena member who was inspired to also become an instructor. “My role as an instructor is not something I take lightly and it has taught me the power of our words and community, and with that, we’re unstoppable.”

Athena offers a range of Les Mills programs, from weightlifting-focused Bodypump to high intensity, 30-minute bike sprint classes akin to spin, to calming and centering yoga and pilates. Class times range from 5:30am to 6:30pm and vary from 30 minutes to an hour, making catching a class accessible for all schedules. Athena also hosts open gym hours between classes for members and communitybuilding events.

Athena Fitness and Wellness is an Olympia-based gym centered on women’s holistic health. Owner and operator Tiffany Jones opened Athena in 2020 with the mission to “redefine womanfocused fitness and build community through action and education about what it means to love our bodies and live our best lives.” Three years later, Athena is a thriving community offering not only fitness classes, but dance workshops, nutrition and health coaching, massage therapy, and salt and sauna rooms.

For decades, people with poor eyesight had to settle for improved vision with the assistance of glasses or contacts. But in the last decade, technology advancements in eye care have opened an incredible new world of options for people of every age with eye issues.

According to Dr. Joshua Frenkel of Evergreen Eye Care Center, “Advancements in lens technology have allowed us to provide highquality vision that we can really fit to a patient’s lifestyle. One recent jump in technology is the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), which has been a game changer.” Previously, surgeons had to rely on formulas that were an estimate of the power needed to correct vision. Since every person heals differently, the outcome can be somewhat unpredictable. LAL’s allow surgeons to change the prescription in your new lens after the surgery through a special light delivery device, effectively customizing it for each individual patient’s needs and wants.

People ages 20-40 with eye issues, whether nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatism, have treatment options.

Many are candidates for LASIK, and most of those who aren’t good candidates for LASIK are candidates for an Implantable Contact Lens (ICL).

“I am so passionate about the new technologies,” said Frenkel, selected as a 2022 Castle Connelly “Rising Star” award winner. “At Evergreen we continue to add the newest advancements in our clinics.”

A benefit for patients ages 40-60 who select Refractive Lens Exchange, RLE, is they will never develop a cataract. This is the only procedure that will prevent cataracts from forming. Doctors remove your natural lens before it becomes a cataract. “The technology is really improving in RLE making it a great option for this age group,” said Frenkel.

Older patients may already be suffering from cataract symptoms, a condition related to changes in your natural lens that often begin to surface after the age of 50. These patients can now also select from new artificial lens technologies.
