Entrepreneurship and Creativity are Nourished at Lacey MakerSpace
The Lacey MakerSpace is a community workshop space that provides tools and equipment for learning job skills, prototyping, and expressing creativity. It is a partnership with the Thurston County Economic Development Council, the City of Lacey, and Saint Martin’s University. The MakerSpace is open to the public. Recently, the space expanded to 8,000 square feet, nearly tripling its size.
Director Michelle Pope is enthusiastic with the progress in fulfilling Lacey MakerSpace’s mission, which is to empower makers to bring ideas to life and cultivate an innovative economy through training on high-tech equipment in a regional workspace for learning new skills. Its three main principles rely on education, inspiration, and community.
The environment also creates pathways for students to become entrepreneurs. There are classes for skills in wood and metal working, 3D printing, and CNC (computer numerical control), which is the automated control of tools through a computer to operate drills, lathes, mills, routers, and 3D printers. People can learn to code their own video game or fashion a stained glass window panel. There are welding instructions and a class to learn to turn a pen.
This summer, Lacey MakerSpace is collaborating with AJAC, a statewide Washington instructional workforce of industry professionals. There will be a series of preapprentice, advanced manufacturing courses geared to both youth and displaced adults. Students will train and learn on high-powered equipment to gain skills necessary for jobs in aerospace and other advanced manufacturing careers.
“Anyone 12 years and older can take a class and become a member,” says Pope. There are many levels including proficiency in multiple areas. The bigger vision is that people take their skills and join the local workforce and/or start their own businesses.
There are membership discounts for military and both high school and college students. If you have a Timberland Regional Library card, you can enjoy a month of free membership to check things out.
“Come visit the MakerSpace,” encourages Pope. There’s an open house every Saturday morning. There are opportunities for volunteering as well. Share your expertise, be a mentor, and meet others in our amazing community.
Lacey MakerSpace is open Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm and on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11am to 6pm.

Shinka: The Immersive Japanese Automobile Exhibit at LeMay–America’s Car Museum
LeMay–America’s Car Museum (ACM) opened their largest, most captivating exhibit to date. The new exhibit, called “Shinka An Immersive Japanese Automobile Exhibit,” is a collaboration with the community and local artists. It’s one you won’t want to miss.
The word “Shinka” is a Japanese term that translates to “evolution” or “progress.” The name of the exhibit itself represents the theme and direction ACM has taken with this new display, highlighting the history, progression, and sheer impact that Japanese car manufacturers have made on the automotive industry and the rest of the world throughout history, ultimately helping to shape the global automotive industry into what it is today.
“We are excited to bring such a unique and immersive exhibit to the community here in the Pacific Northwest,” says Gary Yamamoto, Executive Director of LeMay–America’s Car Museum. “With Shinka, we took our definition of ‘car exhibit’ to new heights by deciding to display these amazing and unique cars in a way we never have before. When you visit the Museum to see our new exhibit, you will see these vehicles displayed together with cultural and artistic elements in a way that will stimulate many different senses all at once. By showcasing these vehicles in this more immersive environment, we hope museum guests will feel a deeper connection and appreciation for these cars. It will definitely be an exhibit that you have to see in person in order to truly appreciate these amazing vehicles.”
Shinka is the largest undertaking in ACM’s 12-year history. The exhibit will span the entire top floor of the Museum’s distinguished Showcase Gallery and will consist of nearly 50 vehicles on display ranging from Japanese originals like the legendary Toyota 2000GT to the iconic cars of the ‘90s like the Nissan Skyline GT-R, and even a mix of modern-day performance like the new Acura NSX.
Though the vehicles are the focus, there will also be many additional immersive and artistic components on display, complimenting the cars throughout the exhibit while also paying homage to various parts of Japanese culture including modern anime, historical Samurai, peaceful Japanese country-side rural landscapes, and bustling Tokyo streets and nightlife.
In an ever-evolving world that is the automotive industry and car culture, America’s Car Museum, which sits just three hours away from the “Mount Fuji of the West,” is thrilled to bring an exhibit to the Pacific Northwest community that reflects the currently blazing hot market of Japanese vehicles and JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) culture. v

Expansive [re]Frame: Haub Family Collections
What is the art that represents the American West? The answer is more expansive than you might imagine. Tacoma Art Museum opened the [re]Frame: Haub Family Collection of Western American Art exhibit in May. This is a major reinstallation of the Haub Family Galleries. The [re]Frame project meaningfully expands on the stories and perspectives about the art of the American West by opening four brand new exhibitions developed by notable guest curators from around the country who draw inspiration from TAM’s Haub Family Collection.
The Haub Family Collection of Western American Art is one of the highlights of a visit to TAM. The important collection includes approximately 250 works that span the 20th century, with remarkable works from the 18th, 19th, and 21st centuries, as well. “The Haub Family Collection has a strong reputation in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, as it includes exceptional paintings and sculptures,” says Andy Maus, executive director of Tacoma Art Museum.“We have been building on this legacy gift in order to prepare for four new exhibitions that
will deepen our understanding of the art of the region and provide exemplary leadership for other museums with similar permanent collections.”
The new and exciting exhibitions opened at the Haub Family Galleries invite visitors to connect with art from and about many important communities in the American West, including indigenous communities in the Southwest and specifically Genízaro communities, the Chinese American experience, and artists in the African and Arab diasporas.
The four new exhibitions are on long-term view at the Tacoma Art Museum:
FINDING HOME: THE CHINESE AMERICAN WEST on view from May 18, 2024 to September 5, 2027
BLACKNESS IS . . . THE REFUSAL TO BE REDUCED on view from May 18, 2024 to March 14, 2027
NEPANTLA: THE LAND IS THE BELOVED on view from May 18, 2024 to September 6, 2026
THE ABIQUEÑOS AND THE ARTIST on view from May 18, 2024 to May 31, 2026
The four separate and distinct exhibitions individually explore a range of important themes about the American West, and, in so doing, the Haub Family Galleries will demonstrate how Western art can be more inclusive of diverse narratives.
The Haub Family Galleries will open with four new exhibitions to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the Haub Family Galleries in November 2024. All exhibitions in the [re]Frame project are organized by Tacoma Art Museum and funded in part by the Terra Foundation for American Art.

An Elevated Evening at Amor Wine & Tapas
Whether its casual or fine dining you seek, Amor Wine & Tapas has all the right ingredients for an elevated evening. Situated on Pacific Avenue in the heart of downtown Tacoma, the stylish venue that debuted last spring has quickly risen to the top of an A-list of South Sound eateries.
Alongside a focus on fresh Northwest ingredients, Amor takes it a step further by intertwining the diverse culinary traditions of countries like Spain, Italy, France, and Morocco.
A carefully curated series of tapas (or small plates), entrees, and desserts sets them apart. Along with a seemingly endless wine list, one of the largest in the region, owner Chris Dasef and his staff create an experience guests won’t soon forget.
“Everything is hand-selected, or made fresh in-house,” says Dasef. “People ask me all the time, ‘What’s your favorite thing on the menu?’ It’s hard for me to answer that, because if it wasn’t good, it would not be on the menu. Trust me, if it’s on our menu, you’re going to love it.”
One way to experience Amor’s distinct flavors is by choosing ‘All Tapas’ from the ‘Tapas at the Table’ menu. Recommended per couple, guests have an opportunity to taste a bit of everything.
Another option is to pick several tapas followed by an entrée. ‘Paella for Two,’ a tasty and sharable frontrunner, is a hearty plate packing clams, mussels, calamari, prawns, and chorizo into a delicious Spanish charred rice.
The freshest selection of cut-to-order herbs and plants such as baby fennel, radish, cilantro and the like, also are featured on many dishes.
Particularly noteworthy is the casual yet refined atmosphere creating a perfect destination for a low-key evening or special occasion. Warm hues of the stunning rose wall mural are flanked by a cascading chandelier and focal point, as outdoor courtyard seating aglow with string lights entices.
Enjoy brunch served on Saturdays and Sundays, special wine pairing events, live music, and monthly Flamenco dancing by Tablao Sabor Flamenco.

Celebrity Chef Pati Jinich to Host Saint Martin’s 2024 Gala
The 2024 Saint Martin’s Annual Gala will feature Chef Pati Jinich, whose deep love for culinary authenticity and culture will deliver a meal to remember. The Gala is the University’s annual signature fundraising event for student scholarships, which raised more than two million dollars last year. With Chef Pati’s infectious energy and unwavering dedication to ethnic flavors, the Saint Martin’s 2024 Gala promises to be as exhilarating as it is delicious.
Chef Jinich’s full schedule includes her three-time James Beard Awardwinning PBS television series “Pati’s Mexican Table.” The taping is done in her own kitchen where she shares family recipes and culinary tips along with heartwarming stories that celebrate the complex history of Mexican cuisine. Her PBS primetime docuseries, “La Frontera,” took her on the exploration of the border shared by the US and Mexico where culture has overlapped for centuries.
Her next cookbook is in process. Jinich is also the resident chef at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. She lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland with her husband Daniel Jinich. They have three sons and her youngest will graduate from high school this spring. She makes time daily to walk the family dog, Mila, a golden lab.
How does she keep cooking fresh? “That’s the thing,” she explains. “I can’t keep up with the wonders of Mexico. It’s humbling and I am honored. I am learning something new all the time.”
Her family is her tasting team. “For me, testing things is super fun. We do that all the time at home. They come on the journey with me,” Jinich explains.
The Saint Martin’s Gala will be held on Saturday, November 2, in the Hal and Inge Marcus Pavilion on Saint Martin’s main campus in Lacey. The menu is being curated and Chef Jinich promises, “It will be absolutely delicious.” She can choose from a wealth of cooking experiences and travels to bring the tastes of Mexico to our plates.
Over the years, the black-tie affair has grown to be the premier culinary event in the South Sound region, featuring a live auction, a fivecourse gourmet dinner, and on-stage cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs. Mark your calendar!

Alderbrook Resort Offers Laid-Back Luxury for Creating Memories
When I went to the beach on Hood Canal to visit my grandma as a child, we would stop by Alderbrook Resort and Spa to enjoy lunch and the beauty of the water. Twenty years later, the destination is still a beautiful place in a natural setting that welcomes you and seems to say, “Let’s play and relax in the forest and on the beach.”
The historic Alderbrook Resort and Spa opened in 1913 and the iconic property is still a gem which is an easy, one-hour drive from Tacoma and 40 minutes from Olympia. The property is 88 acres with 93 well-appointed guest rooms and 15 two-bedroom cottages perfect for families to stay together on the beach.
Mark Phelan, manager at the resort says, “We want this to feel like grandma’s cabin for our guests.” Along those lines, the resort is not stuffy; in fact, they pride themselves on offering
laid-back luxury to guests. It is apparent in everything they do. The staff are relaxed and servers smile and greet you with ease. The resort is also home to two cats affectionately named Alder and Brook who are residents of the property. It is perfect for couples and great for family getaways. With miles of beachcombing, water activities, and hiking, there are lots of adventures — or you can choose to simply enjoy the art of relaxing.
Guests in need of pampering and relaxing will enjoy the well-appointed Alderbrook Spa . This serene spa offers a luxury oasis complete with calming music filling the air. The relaxation is palpable here. The spa manager says, ”We want guests to have a very personalized experience that is tailored to their needs.”
There are plenty of dining options for foodies at the resort from the
on-site restaurant at the Restaurant at Alderbrook with magnificent views of the water and mouthwatering delights. We loved the Grand Marnier Black Tiger Prawns, a rich and creamy appetizer and a staple on the menu. Our favorite main course is the savory King Salmon cooked to perfection and accompanied by fresh, local, seasonal sides. Don’t skip dessert! Be sure to try the locally made Olympic Mountain Ice Creams — the vanilla ice cream tastes like homemade cake batter.
Alderbrook Resort and Spa offers plenty of special events and a timeless vacation for couples and families. It is a unique, laid-back escape that will create long-lasting memories for you and your loved ones. v

FoxFire Salon and Spa Celebrates 40 Years
Tenacity and perseverance are two traits that have helped FoxFire Salon and Spa reach an impressive milestone—40 years in business. “It was never my intention to be a business owner,” said Karin Walker, founder and owner. “I just wanted to work with my friends doing great hair and having fun in a really nice environment.”
“I was 26 years old and needed $25,000 for the build-out of my first location,” Walker recalled. “I kept getting turned down because the bankers didn’t think I knew what I was doing, and they were right!” Young and fearless, the aspiring salon owner kept applying. Eventually she found the right lender, who by happenstance was also her client. Walker’s parents offered their home as collateral.
The founder’s vision of a high-end salon was the catalyst for FoxFire. The business opened on February 14, 1984 with a six-station salon that she built and designed. Located at the intersection of Center and Orchard
Streets in Tacoma, Walker credits her six original employees with playing a huge role in the salon’s overall success. One still works with her in a staff that now numbers close to 30.
In 2001 she expanded the business to its Fircrest location. She built this salon from the ground up. In 2009 she heard a rumor that a prime location in the Proctor District might soon be available. Karin contacted the owners of the historical Gamble Building and expressed interest in opening an Aveda lifestyle salon in the vibrant Proctor business district. Just a few months later, she opened this second location.
“It’s been quite the journey, but I have enjoyed it,” said Walker. “I’m a people person and have loved working with my team.” She is also proud of the many awards the salons have earned over the years. One of her most memorable awards was being recognized in 2013 by Salon Today, the top business publication for owners of salons and spas. FoxFire made the publication’s list of the Top 200 Salons in the country.
“I’m so thankful for having an amazing team and the support from loyal guests for more than 40 years,” says Walker.

23 | Kitchens
Pickleball enthusiasts and their friends are having smashingly good times at 23|Kitchens in Lacey. The worldclass indoor/outdoor entertainment complex provides six indoor courts in the temperature-controlled pavilion. Five are outdoor lighted courts that are open to the public. It’s located in the developing Hogum Bay Town Center with easy access from I-5.
The cool and modern restaurant brings the kitchen count to 23. The other 22 come from the seven-foot, no-volley zone on each side of the net that is commonly called “the kitchen.” Eleven courts equal 22 kitchens.
23|Kitchen owners Josh Carpenter and Craig Millsap became friends and then business partners after a serendipitous meeting resulting from a snowmobile mishap. Meridian Campus Family Dental is owned and operated by Dr. Carpenter and C&S Construction is owned by Millsap.
Not only is pickleball Washington’s official state sport, it’s also the fastest growing one in America. Pickleball offers low-barrier entry, requiring only shoes, a paddle, and balls. Players reap health benefits, and it’s easy for everyone to get in on the fun. Kids can play with grandparents and age is not important.
Membership at 23|Kitchens are optional. However, it provides numerous benefits. Players get earlier court access (5am vs. 7am) and can play later. Reservations and drop-in play are free, and there’s priority access to events, lessons, and other activities. There’s no initiation fee for annual or monthly memberships. Join as a single, couple or family. “Whatever works best for you,” suggests Carol Peebles, General Manager.
With the opening of the restaurant, hunger is easily satisfied. Rotisserie chicken, salads, soups, and sandwiches are made to order. All food is made from scratch including
the salad dressings. Try out the wall of beer where you pull your own. Seating all over the complex makes for great spectating, chatting with friends, and enjoying time together. The rooftop bar offers spectacular vistas of Mt. Rainier.
The high-capacity kitchen can cater all-sized events. Plan a team building event or a birthday party. Play pickleball or any of the yard games like cornhole and giant Jenga. Peebles would love to talk with you about your special event. v MARY ELLEN PSALTIS

Team RED Gets Things DONE
The transition from living on your own to needing skilled medical care can happen practically overnight. After suffering a fall and recovering from COVID-19, Sara Fasoli’s parents were in just such a position. They had lived in their family home in the Issaquah area since 1972 when they purchased it for just $14,000. Fast forward 52 years and they needed immediate help.
“Reality came so quick,” said Fasoli. “I was weighing my options about the family home when my aunt recommended I talk to Kathy Kleber.” Living out-of-state in Lincoln, Nebraska, Fasoli needed more than just what a typical realtor provides. Kleber and her Team RED (Resourceful, Experienced, and Dedicated) members provided the expertise and resources to help Fasoli from start to finish.
Early on, Kleber helped Fasoli and her sister navigate gap financing which allowed them to access the home’s equity ahead of its sale to pay for their mom and dad’s immediate medical needs. She also assisted with an attorney to prepare legal documents so Fasoli could sell the house and act on her parents’ behalf as their power of attorney. Utilizing her
resources, Kleber had inspectors to evaluate the condition of the house and contractors to make the suggested repairs that would ensure the property would sell quickly while providing its best return on investment. Once sold, she provided the move-out support for auction, donation, and discard.
“She is not only professional, but she has a team that delivers results,” said Fasoli. From providing the dump guy to a gardener, Team RED oversaw the project of bringing the home and property to a level that allowed it to sell in one week. “I needed someone to make this old house look pretty.”
“Sara and her sister were amazing family support. Our job was to come beside them and to make their job just a little easier,” said Kleber. “In the end, we were able to help the family get far more for the house than they thought possible.”

Ted Brown Music Outreach Provides Therapy
Ted Brown Music has served the music needs for much of Washington for 90 years with rentals, repairs, lessons, event services, and making music. There is also the Ted Brown Music (TBM) Outreach, a non-profit arm that offers music therapy to our community. Music therapy harnesses the extraordinary power of music to treat people with diseases, chronic pain, Alzheimer’s, and psychological issues. Science is showing how air vibrations (music) can profoundly impact damaged bodies and brains.
Ben Kendall is the TBM Outreach lead music therapist who runs group sessions and provides individual sessions for students, active military, vets, and other adults. “Depending on population and goals you are working towards, there are many musical activities,” says Kendall. “We are working on group cohesion, emotion regulation, and expression through music.”
Participants may write songs or analyze lyrics to find emotional connections. Music therapy can help people identify their triggers and regain their center as they work through challenging emotions. “I work a lot with mindfulness,” Kendall adds, which helps people realize the present moment. Participants learn coping skills to deal with everyday living. Goals are often about growing emotional awareness and improving social skills.
TBM Outreach offers programs for soldiers who are healing from past traumas. They may be active military, in a recovery unit, or a vet. Both men and women attend. Music therapy is an avenue that works better for some than conventional talk therapy. A grant allows military personnel to attend at no cost.
MORE TBM OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Sprouting Joy is an inclusive musical therapy group for children 3 to 8 and their caregivers. “We do summer instrument exploration camps for kids in fourth through sixth grades,” explains TBM Outreach Executive Director, Stephanie Howe. Youth ages 12 to 16 can learn the art of jazz improv. There is rock school for those from 12 to 18. All camps happen in Tacoma. Harmonic
Connections is an adult choir that includes people with disabilities.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
TBM Outreach accepts new and reasonably used band or orchestra instruments and sound equipment. After instruments are repaired, cleaned, and sanitized they can be given to youth who could not otherwise afford one. (Organs, pianos, or keyboards are not currently accepted.) You can also donate financially, sponsor a scholarship for an up-and-coming musician, or become a mentor.
Do you know someone who may benefit from music therapy? Direct them to TBM Outreach. v

Laughing Yoga, Mind Body and Social Benefits for Seniors
Laughing yoga is a movement and breathing exercise that aims to cultivate joy, bring out your inner child, and help you let go of daily life stressors. It uses deliberate laughter to promote overall wellness and claims to be beneficial against various chronic illnesses.
It is a simple, affordable and fun alternative to conventional yoga. A typical session involves stretching, deep breathing and laughter exercises. Laughter yoga is easy to incorporate into your daily life and requires no special skill or athletic ability to practice.
Last fall, GenCare started the Laughing Yoga program for its residents and the community. Candace Snapp, the head of Vitality says, “We started talking about social fitness and it was a missing piece of the puzzle. Laughing Yoga is filling the missing piece. Sometimes new residents have a hard time going through this life change and making the transition. We
brought laughing yoga in to encourage seniors to laugh and get to know others in the class.”
There was a study done in 2022 with nurses that had worked through COVID and that study found that laughing yoga actually helped the nurses feel much better and make deeper connections with their associates. Why did they see these changes? During the class there are hormones released into the body.
The simple act of laughing releases dopamine to the brain. The simple act of smiling creates good hormones. Our bodies release oxytocin and serotonin which helps to boost mood. Not to mention that endorphins released reduce inflammation and increase pleasure. v
