We were honored this year for Valdosta Magazine to be named a “Best of Georgia” winner from the Georgia Business Journal. Readers, advertisers, and friends from all over Georgia voted and helped us win in the Magazine Publications category in their annual readers’ poll, for which we are grateful! One thing we know is that it takes more than just us to make Valdosta Magazine the award-winning publication that it is. It takes many people working together with a shared love of this great community. The writers, photographers, and friends who help us tell the stories of the people that make Valdosta so unique. “The piece you did on Ben Copeland and the Distinguished Citizens event last fall was awesome!” “I’M HONORED BEYOND DESCRIPTION TO HAVE MY NAME ON THE LIST.”

SEEDS Ben I. Copeland Sr. Honored as Boy Scout’s 2021 Distinguished Citizen
W
STORY BY K.T. MCKEE | PHOTOS BY LINDSI JONES PHOTOGRAPHY
hen Ben Copeland heard he was being recognized by the Boy Scouts of America’s South Georgia Council as this year’s Distinguished Citizen, he figured they must have been “scraping the bottom of the barrel,” according to Valdosta Mayor Scott James Matheson. “Did I forget to mention humble?” Matheson later added to his long list of reasons why the longtime supporter of the Boy Scouts deserved the honor at the annual Distinguished Citizen’s Dinner at the Rainwater Conference Center in Valdosta earlier this fall. Copeland - a Valdosta-born landscape architect whose resume includes a lengthy 66
list of service opportunities - did start out his speech by joking that it must have been a slow night in town for so many people to show up for the event. “I told Judge (Tyson) McLane, ‘Don’t you have somebody else?’,” Copeland said with a laugh. “I’m honored beyond description to have my name on the list.” Matheson and others had no problem making their case for Copeland to take home the trophy signifying the highest honor presented by the council. He has been an active promoter of scouting, having served on the Alapaha Council (now the South Georgia Council) for many years and has been actively involved in upgrading facilities at Camp Patten.
Valdosta Magazine
As a vital part of the community for many years, Matheson said Copeland has had lasting impacts on agriculture, education, health care and, of course, scouting. “With any board he sits on, any charity he gives his efforts to, if they’re struggling for ideas, he’ll always offer his wisdom. If they’re struggling to raise money, he’ll offer a dollar or two or way more,” Matheson said of his friend. “If they just need his effort, he gives that, as well, depending on the board and depending on the need. But I promise you, if he steps up and offers his wisdom, his cash and his effort, it’s going to be an absolutely amazing event, as always.” He went on to say the former Tennessee Department of Conservation’s Chief of Design of Planning exemplifies the Scout Law in that he’s trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. “In today’s world, a person who exhibits ethical behavior, self-reliance, and caring and concern for others as shown in the Scout Law brings to mind Ben Copeland every time,” Matheson said of Copeland before passing the podium to Jason Shaw, the Georgia Public Service Commissioner. Although Shaw’s job was to introduce the keynote speaker, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black, he spent a good portion of his time explaining how Copeland served as a second father to him as he was growing up with Copeland’s son, Ben Copeland Jr. “The honoree this evening is a big part of the reason I am who I am,” Shaw said. “We lived right down the street from
the Copelands on Lake Irma and Ben Junior and I got into a lot of trouble … But Mr. Copeland, I always looked up to you. You were a father figure to me. I remember when you got me on the Valdosta Technical Foundation right out of college. This man is the technical college. He put his heart and soul into improving the technical system in Georgia, starting right here in Valdosta, and I know his heart is still there.” Indeed, after working for the Patten Seed Company in Lakeland, becoming president in 1995, he served as chairman of the Board of Directors of VTC (now Wiregrass Georgia Technical College) and The Wiregrass Foundation. He was the recipient of the 2002 Volunteer of the Year award for the Technical College System of Georgia and appointed to the state Board of TCSG by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2003 until his retirement a year ago. Copeland was inducted into The Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2014 and has served on the boards of several organizations, including the Georgia Sod Producers Association, Turfgrass Producers International and The Turner Center for the Arts. He currently serves on the Valdosta Lowndes County Hospital Authority. Keynote Speaker Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said Copeland has been a mentor to him and that he appreciated the high expectations placed on him over the years.
“There were so many people like Ben Copeland who made a difference in me and invested in me,” Black said of his career. Copeland said during his speech he agreed with Black’s “Ph.D in life” principles of preserving the land for future generations, being lifelong learners, staying healthy physically and mentally, and mending fences -- literally and figuratively. “Folks, in these very, very strange times that we live in, these principles the commissioner referred to could solve a lot of our social problems,” Copeland said. “And it’s up to folks like us to strive to live these every day. I don’t know of any better organization than the Boy Scouts of America. We’ve been beat up and shot at for the past few years, but that’s OK. You folks here tonight exemplify what scouting is all about. To be reverent and friendly and as the commissioner said, ‘mend your fences.’ If we don’t work at it, then who is going to? Who is going to?” Copeland said one of his biggest regrets in life is never having the opportunity to be in scouting as a young boy. “Certainly growing up as a skinny kid on Bemis Road, I certainly never dreamed I’d see my name on a list of distinguished citizens that have been honored before,” he said. “I’m really in awe that somehow I made it here.” | VM

FOLLOWING THE WONDERFUL STORY in the Spring 2021 issue of Valdosta Magazine about the former home of Doc Holliday and his family (Old House New Attitude by Susanna D. Harris) I, being a western history enthusiast, just had to make another special trip back to Tombstone Arizona armed with a number of copies to present to worthy recipients. I also took photos of Major Henry Holliday and Alice Jane Holliday together with photos of their graves in Sunset Hill Cemetery and of the Holliday home in Valdosta with its outside plaque. A lot of people don't realize the strong ties and fascinating legend Valdosta has with Tombstone because of the Doc Holliday story, but I was able to officially present more photos and copies of the magazine to worthy recipients to display in various museums. There is, of course, the famous legendary, “Birdcage Theatre” for one, plus the “Gunfighters Hall of Fame,” and the “The Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park.” On my next trip, I will carry more copies for the many others who want one. ~ COMMANDER TERRY BURTON

Jake and Davis Lastinger met in Oxford, Mississippi, at Ole Miss after being introduced by her best friend after a football game. It was clear that it was meant to be, as three months later, Jake asked Davis to be his girlfriend in New Orleans at the 2015 Sugar Bowl. Then, after three years of dating and living in different cities, with Jake in Valdosta and Davis in Atlanta, he proposed to her at her parent’s home in Nashville, Tennessee. Winter Winter 2022 2022

TRULY SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE DAY, AS IT FLIES BY SO QUICKLY. On August 1, 2020, when their big plans for a wedding in Oxford were postponed by Covid in 2020, Davis and Jake turned to his hometown of Valdosta and his childhood home for the perfect place to exchange vows. They continued a special family memory by getting married in the same location that Jake’s sister was married the year before in a lovely, intimate ceremony with their families and close friends. Their friend and officiant, Justin Crenshaw, thought to have them each write a letter to the other before the wedding. He incorporated the letters into the ceremony by reading them aloud for the first time in an unforgettable moment for everyone who was there. Once they were married, they continued to plan their larger celebration in Oxford for June of 2021. The wonderful thing about that event was that they were able to share their wedding in Valdosta with everyone in Oxford after Davis's future sister-in-law, Haley, surprised them with a video of their hometown ceremony. Davis wore a diamond necklace made from her grandmother’s wedding ring, and she had her Mimi’s handkerchief wrapped around her bouquet. Her advice to brides is to truly slow down to enjoy the day, as it flies by so quickly. She also shares that having a wedding planner helps to ease the stress of the event, and she couldn’t imagine her celebration without one! From engagement in her family’s home to their ceremony at Jake's childhood home in Valdosta, home is truly where the heart is for this couple who were able to share their love with family and create safe, lasting memories in Valdosta on solid foundations that will endure for years to come. | VM

A CHANCE FOR LOVE Story by MEGAN PIPER WHITE Photography by JENNA LINDSEY
Patrick and Chandler Chancy have a special love story that all began with Patrick’s Aunt Cyndi taking a chance on playing matchmaker. Cyndi met Chandler at a weekend-long Chrysalis Christian event in 2019, and she instantly thought of Patrick. She set them up with a phone call, and they connected from the start like lifelong friends.

At the time that they met, Chandler already had a 4-year-old Boxer named Hudson, who had been by her side through thick and thin for the past few years. She let Patrick know that Hudson would have to approve of him, and when they met, they were best buds from the start! By the end of 2020, on December 23, Patrick took a chance by presenting Chandler with a manila folder addressed to “Chandler Chancy.” When she opened it, it was a formal letter of adoption of Hudson by Patrick Chancy. She turned around with tears in her eyes to find Patrick on one knee, and it was one of the best moments of her life. Of course, she said yes! On April 16, 2021, Patrick and Chandler had what she describes as the most perfect wedding day, at the place where Jesus put their relationship into motion in 2019, Camp Tygart, long before they could have even imagined meeting one another. She describes the day, “It was one of the most sacred days of our lives, at the most special place in our lives, with the most important people in our lives. And for that, I am forever grateful for a stranger, turned friend, turned Aunt, who introduced me to my forever person.” She explains their venue, “On the outside looking in, it may seem like a dusty old church camp, but once you’ve served together, worshipped together, and prayed together on the Holy Ground, it’s the closest thing to Heaven while on Earth.” The wedding ceremony included 30 members of their immediate family and closest friends, and Patrick and Chandler were able to serve Communion to every single person in attendance, which they hope to make a tradition in their family in the years to come. “Marriage shouldn’t be about how many bridesmaids/groomsmen you have, how many guests in attendance, or being flashy. It’s a sacred, intimate ceremony of two becoming one.” While they had their intimate ceremony in light of the pandemic, they planned a celebration in February of this year at the Highgrove Farm, where they celebrated with even more family and friends with dinner and dancing all night long. When asked for advice to give future brides, Chandler encourages them to do what is best for them, as every single detail of their beautifully unique wedding was what she and Patrick envisioned. It was the perfect chance for them to celebrate their love and the family they now share, furry family members included, in their most special place that they love! | VM

LASTING CONNECTIONS Story by MEGAN PIPER WHITE Photography by WES SEWELL PHOTOGRAPHY
The fourth generation of her family to attend First Presbyterian Church, Whitney Jones knew that she had to be married in the church she grew up and was baptized in. Even as a little girl, she wanted to have her wedding reception at the Crescent, and those dreams came true once she met Corey.

Valdosta Valdosta Magazine Magazine
Whitney Williams and Corey Jones first connected online in a dating app, with an interesting detail mentioned in Corey’s description, that he was originally from West Virginia. Whitney asked where in West Virginia, and she was shocked when he replied with Morgantown. Whitney shares, “my grandmother’s family lived in Morgantown for several generations. I had never met anyone from Morgantown until I met Corey. My grandmother met my grandfather in Washington, D.C. during World War II and moved to Valdosta. I just felt like it was meant to be, and my mom still cannot believe I am married to someone from Morgantown! We got engaged after two years together. He proposed on the 4th of July, my favorite holiday. I like to tell people I got a sparkler of a lifetime that day!” With many family traditions planned for their wedding, Whitney wanted a true Southern wedding, as a fifth generation Valdosta native especially. Their wedding cake was a mandarin orange cake that her mom made for their family growing up. Her father/daughter dance was very important to her because of a special connection with her dad through the years. “My dad chose songs for my sisters and myself when we were little; mine was ‘California Girls’ by the Beach Boys, and that is what we danced to together at the wedding.” Whitney encourages future brides with very wise advice, “Do not stress on your wedding day! If you can afford one, hire a wedding planner. Do trials (hair and make-up) ahead of time. Invitations can really set the tone for the event to come. Flowers set the mood and atmosphere of the wedding. Make sure to get your dress as soon as you can as it may involve several alterations. I would also suggest doing pictures beforehand so you can spend more time with your loved ones at the reception. Another tip is to have extra wedding cake in the kitchen in case you run out. We ran out fast and were so lucky to have extra!” (That’s the sign of a really good cake!) The wedding celebration ended fittingly with something that brought Whitney and Corey together from the start - a West Virginia tradition of the final dance of the night to “Country Roads” by John Denver. “It’s the state song, played at the end of a win for WVU sports, and all West Virginia weddings. It was special to end on this.” A small connection that led to a lasting love and marriage, rooted in Valdosta tradition, for many years to come. | VM

SOUTHERN TRADITIONS Story by MEGAN PIPER WHITE Photography by JENNA LINDSEY
Parker and Ariel Bonner couldn’t imagine their wedding anywhere but Valdosta, Georgia, as it’s where they met and where Parker has lived for all of his life. They met during their freshman year of college, when Ariel was back for a visit from the University of Alabama, and Parker was with her friends from high school at Valdosta State University. Their proposal location will always be a special place – he asked her to marry him on the lot they’re now building a house on in Thomasville, Georgia. Winter Winter 2022 2022

An exciting tradition said to bring good weather on a wedding day is to bury a bottle of bourbon in advance of the wedding, and then dig it up on the day of the wedding! Parker and Ariel had fun locating it and digging it up with their bridal party, with a toast to a beautiful wedding ahead. Ariel credits her perfect day to her team of vendors. “We had the best team that anyone could ever ask for. Spend time selecting amazing vendors and all your stresses will melt away when it is finally wedding time! They will ensure that you are able to relax and really soak in the entire day. It really does fly by, but I am so thankful to say that I remember every moment from our special day!” When asked to share her favorite moments of the wedding day, Ariel described walking down the aisle with Parker after they were married as the best feeling in the world! Earlier in the day, a moment that will always stay with her is when her bridesmaids prayed over her before she was tucked away for the ceremony. Another precious detail was a bouquet on the chair next to her in memory of her mother, who passed away when Ariel was young. Their roots run deep in Valdosta, and they agree that it will always feel like home to them. Their dream wedding day was full of personal connections, from the venue at The Langdale Residence at Loblolly Hill to the makeup artist Makenzie Shea, who was also the Maid of Honor and Ariel’s college roommate, to their wedding planner and friend, Rachel Scott with Rachel Scott Weddings. Ariel and Rachel actually worked together in the past at Only Options and Perfect Settings in Valdosta, which is who provided the stationery and invitations, as well as custom napkins for the event. Ariel wore a family heirloom necklace, created from diamonds passed down from Parker’s late great grandmother, her bridal gown is from White Weddings Valdosta, and Parker’s ring is from Steel’s Jewelry. A fun addition to the late December wedding was Santa hats for the guests to wear on the dance floor and to see the happy couple off at the end of the night in a beautiful, mint green classic car. Truly a Southern affair, Ariel and Parker’s wedding day was one that was steeped in Valdosta tradition and love, surrounded by family and wedding vendors turned friends. | VM

As with most industries, florists have seen an up and down ride in supply shortages and a sharp rise in costs of products over the past two years. These price increases are due to low production, transportation costs, weather challenges, and the COVID pandemic. This is something brides need to keep in mind when planning for their big day. Seasoned floral professionals who have a strong relationship with their wholesalers will normally place their orders at least two to four weeks in advance to help ensure they get the flowers they need – and you want. When meeting with a florist, be sure to ask about timeframes and backup plans. The best advice for brides is to be flexible when choosing flowers and find a reputable florist that you can trust. Also, be aware that florists are booking up very quickly so it is wise to secure a florist at least twelve – sixteen months in advance. | VM

Bashful

Blush and bashful have been the inspiration colors not only for Shelby in Steel Magnolias, but for brides throughout the South for decades. In this case, the bride, Annelise Brown Branham, began with dreams of white florals, champagne bridesmaid dresses and romantic pale pink tones. With a twoyear engagement, she and her fiancé, Tanner Branham, had plenty of time to change their minds not only on these elements, but also the location and venue. Once the venue was set at Lee Farm Reserve in DuPont, her vision changed as well. “I decided that if there were enough beautiful florals and vibrant colors for guests to enjoy, then maybe they’d forget about being outside in South Georgia in June,” remembers Annelise.

She turned to The Avriett House and Corey Brice McCants in Homerville to master her new vision by bringing flowers and details to a command performance on a sultry night and Georgia. B. Claire Luxury Event Rentals was called upon to ensure furnishings under the grand tents and pavilion matched the bold and stylish attitude of the wedding reception. Annelise and her mother worked with Paula Ramey and Susanna Harris of Pink Bee Events in Valdosta to pull the logistics of the day together to make sure all the details and vendors melded seamlessly for a smooth evening under the stars. Southern hospitality was a central theme throughout the wedding events and became a tenet carried into all the details that visually enhanced the festive atmosphere. Many of the details, such as the cornflower blue monogrammed linens on the long banquet table and the dried citrus on each place setting, added dimension that picked up on the blue and white overtones and citrus used in the arrangements. Fresh fruit epitomizes summer and was incorporated to enhance textures and color. “As a woman born and raised in the South, I love blue and white china and Steel Magnolias more than Clairee loves her luggage. So, naturally, the Spode blue Italian dinner plates, chinoiserie ginger jars, and armadillo cake were a must. It ended up that the design and decor was anything but “bashful.”

HERE COMES THE
One Size Fits All Garden Variety Wedding…. We Think Not Many brides have trouble defining their overall vision for a wedding. They get lost in what is expected, and they forget to put their own spin on their event. Some suggestions to refine your wedding style so that you can focus on your details are below. • Are you casual or formal? What kind of environment will you and your guests feel most comfortable celebrating in that day? Are you a black tie and bubbly couple or do you prefer a romantic, rustic surrounding? • Match your venue to your overall vibe. Some venues can go either way as much can be overcome with décor. However, unless the vision and plan are crystal clear, don’t fight the space, or it will be awkward. • Hire vendors that are in line with your event vision. Consider how their style will meld with your overall vibe. For instance, do you want a jazz group, a country band, a party band, or just background music? Make sure it meshes with your other details for seamless party flow.

Dish out The Details Ask yourself what will add personality to your wedding to make it stand out from the others? Fun touches will create laughs and memories for your guests. • It all begins with the mail – from the save the date to the invitation, make sure they are included in your theme • Fashion – dresses don’t have to be long or ultra conservative, think beyond traditional • Fun cocktails – add colorful straws, umbrellas, monogrammed drink stirrers • Don’t forget the ceiling – garlands, lit orbs, dangling orchids • Create floral design that is unique with different flowers and containers • Lighting – inexpensive and makes a wow statement • Colors – go bold, go different • Tablespace – more than just flowers, consider the napkin fold, the silverware, the plates, add in colorful rented glassware | VM

Tanner and Annelise met in March before both graduating from the University of Georgia in May of 2017. She took a job in her hometown of Homerville while Tanner stayed in Athens for veterinary school. In 2019, Tanner proposed, and they set the date for June 5, 2021. As if planning a wedding wasn’t enough, Annelise decided to change career paths and began teaching at Valwood School in Hahira. In May of 2021, soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. became soon-to-be Dr. and Mrs. as Tanner accepted a job at Hahira Veterinary Clinic. After a whirlwind of planning a wedding during a global pandemic, they decided to continue the “chaos,” and are excitedly expecting a baby girl in May!

Honeymoon! YES, YOU CAN STILL

ravel is rather challenging amidst COVID; however, it is still possible when using great care and following guidelines when traveling. Honeymoons in the Caribbean are still a valid option with islands putting in place their own guidelines and requirements. It is imperative that you check with your travel advisor when planning your honeymoon so that you will be sure to have all the information you need to travel safely and worry-free. First, being fully vaccinated makes traveling so much easier and many more destinations more accessible, as well as restaurants and other venues. Some destinations require PCR COVID-19 testing prior to your arrival, even if you are vaccinated. These regulations vary depending on which island or country you are flying or cruising to for your honeymoon. Information is changing daily, and it is imperative that you have the correct information on entry requirements before you depart, and having a travel advisor assist you to be sure you have everything you need prior to arriving at the airport is definitely something you will want to do. When choosing a travel advisor, be sure you choose someone with a lot of personal travel experience, and who has been in the business for several years. They will have a better understanding of the complete travel process, as well as your needs to make for a smoother journey. If testing internationally is not on your bucket list of things to do for your honeymoon, then I would suggest considering a U.S. destination with your travel advisor. Make sure you contact your travel advisor well in advance of your honeymoon to walk you through the planning stages of your vacation so that you are well-informed, especially if you are planning a wedding destination. We’ll be here for you from the first conversation to begin your plans until your safe return home. | VM

That’ s BROOKE & CHARLES WHITE
Story by Mattia Goddard // Photography by Wes Sewell Photography
We Over Me, The White Family Way he owners of White Weddings know a thing or two about happy marriages. Not only have they been a part of many couples’ nuptial plans, but they also work hard on their own. After 14 years, they’ve figured out how to work together to make each other better and to live a life that is both intentional and complete. Brooke and Charles both went to VSU, but didn’t meet until they were on Spring Break in Destin, back in 2004. She was born and raised in Valdosta and he was from Albany, but Charles spent many summers in Valdosta growing up. He is very close to his uncle, Jeff White, and his wife, Mandy. Charles applied only to VSU; he knew that’s where he would go to college, and Valdosta was where he would one day live. The young couple began dating after that fateful Spring Break, and they stayed together while Brooke finished college and have been inseparable ever since. The couple married at Northside Baptist Church in January of 2008, surrounded by their family and friends. The two settled into life in Valdosta, Brooke teaching third grade and Charles working as Senior Sports Program Manager with the Special Olympics of Georgia before becoming a Field Representative for U.S. Senator David Perdue. Brooke completed her Masters in Early Childhood Education, but somewhere in the back of her mind, her family’s 42 40
Valdosta Valdosta Magazine Magazine
entrepreneurial spirit was beginning to take shape. Brooke comes from a long line of entrepreneurs in Valdosta. She fondly recalls her grandfather’s grocery store, Steinberg’s Grocery on River Street, and she could feel a similar calling for herself. Fast forward 10 years, and these two are about to celebrate a decade in business with their bridal store, White Weddings. Brooke opened a second White Weddings in Tallahassee, three years ago, and they are currently expanding it to include a prom store. The entrepreneurial bug that bit all those years ago has really paid off, giving this couple, with their two young children, the flexibility to decide how
they choose to live each day. Brooke and Charles prefer to spend their days together. They’re not big fans of the “divide and conquer” mentality. They run errands together, and they both take the kids to school. Their friends laugh at them, but they are good natured about it. They enjoy each other’s company and enjoy sharing life’s duties. These days Charles works for Congressman Austin Scott as his field representative, which gives him the flexibility to also help his wife with the family business. They have non-traditional roles for day-to-day activities. Charles does the grocery shopping, meal prep, and cooking. Brooke comes behind him and does the cleaning and organizing. Brooke says, “Nobody has any specific chore. If it’ll help our household, one of us just does it. We don’t believe in keeping score.” When Charles and Brooke were first married, they didn’t have it all figured out. They often weren’t on the same page and didn’t bring out the best in each other. Brooke says, “I’m a gas pusher, he’s a brake stomper. We had to learn to balance each other out.” They credit their discipleship journey with the strength they now have in their marriage. Charles went through his faith journey with Joe Glenn Smith and Brooke was discipled by Irene Dodd. That journey of discovery has led them to see every day as a gift. Charles says, “I know that while every day won’t be a home run, that’s ok. Continue every day to honor God first, have that foundation.”
“Communication is the key. Communicate constantly. Figure out what your spouse needs to feel heard and understood and then respond accordingly.”
Brooke says, “Every day, we are intentional about staying on the same page and if we’re not, we stop and take steps to reconnect.” When asked what advice they would offer to young newlyweds or to couples beginning the marriage journey, both Brooke and Charles agree that communication is the key. Communicate constantly. Figure out what your spouse needs to feel heard and understood and then respond accordingly. Charles says, “One of the ways I show her she is loved is by sitting down and giving her my full attention when she has an idea she wants to run by me. Whether that takes five minutes or sixty minutes, that’s what she needs. I’ve figured out that’s
her love language. Letting her talk things through.” Brooke says, “The adjectives you use when you’re mad, consider the opposite words. Those are the ones that you probably need. I’m often captivated by my phone since I mostly work from my phone, so Charles might say you’re not listening to me, you don’t care, you’re ignoring me.... so, the opposite would be to pay attention, to notice, compliment, observe, listen to, agree with.” Brooke and Charles are deeply committed to Valdosta, and they find value in connecting people in the community. They enjoy bringing different people together and making new connections. They have chosen to invest spiritually in
the couples who shop at White Weddings with their Marriage Ministry. They have a Facebook group specifically for these couples called Equip, where they share insights into what works for them on their marriage journey and helpful ideas and acts that others might benefit from. They put together dinners for their couples and give talks where they share stories, the good and the bad. Brooke and Charles see this as a natural fit with their wedding business and as a way to reach couples about the value of communication. Charles added one last bit of advice for couples, “Bloom where you are planted. It's easy to always want what is next. It’s hard to sit tight where you’re at sometimes.” | VM

That’ s WADE & ANGELA CRANCE
Story by Mattia Goddard // Photography by Wes Sewell Photography
Still Going Strong Four Decades of Life and Love ngela and Wade Crance celebrated 42 years of marriage this past November. This couple knows a thing or two about the secret to a happy marriage. Read on to learn from these two, who have been going strong since 1979. “Marriage and love is a commitment -til death do you part - and hopefully that's a long road, so if you choose it, be ready to put the effort in to make it a success. Before you marry, know each other's families because how someone was raised can affect the way they raise their children. We were blessed with great parents that stayed married, so our examples were a help. Love is a beautiful gift, cherish it. When you go through a rough patch... remember why and who you fell in love with and know that person is still there - even if they or y'all don't act like it during tough times. We are living proof the greatest years you can have are after the hardest (only a few) years!” Both from Alabama, Angela from Anniston, and Wade from Mobile, they met in a bar while Angela was in college. It was a memorable night. Angela fell off a long bench, or as she is quick to clarify, she was pushed off the end, due to too many people on the bench. Wade tried to help her up, but Angela let him know she was just fine. Mutual friends saw it happen and made the introductions. They were married six months later at a historic church with dirt floors at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, Alabama. 42
Valdosta Valdosta Magazine Magazine
Wade’s job with West Lumber company transferred him to Valdosta in 1985. They fell in love with the community and never left. Angela says, “Valdosta is home, the people, the southern charm makes this community special. There is a church on every corner which means people are trying to be good. We wanted to raise our children around friends of faith because life can be hard and who better to help you through the tough times. You are who you hang around!”
These days, they are both retired from their career jobs, Angela from Wiregrass GA Tech and Wade from Lowe's DC. Being retired has made their marriage easier. If you make it to retirement, get ready to rediscover your partner. According to these two, it's fabulous. When Angela remembers back to the days when they worked, she says, “Especially during those peak career highs it was tough, we thought we had to be so work driven it didn't leave time for each other. If we were
“God willing, we still have many years together, the longer we are married, and the older we get the more we appreciate, love and respect each other. We plan on laughing a lot, playing a lot, and enjoying each day as the gift it truly is!”
not working, we were taking care of the children. Love during those years was hard for us, and we went through a few stressful years, but we persevered and we are so much stronger because of the challenging times. I guess we are proud of ourselves for not giving up! We did lots wrong then, we did not take time for us, we gave all of our time to work or the kids. Love is a decision and that decision takes cultivating. If you don't invest in love, you can lose it. Having a good church, and God in our lives is very important, I'm not sure how a human can survive without believing in a higher power - prayer, and the Bible are the greatest gift, knowing God is listening.” Their days are spent very differently now. They own a business called Art and Soul downtown, and their two children are adults, married with children of their own. They have six grandchildren, all of whom live in Valdosta, so family time is a big part of their retirement. Attending sporting, school, and church events fills their calendar, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. They are so very proud of their children and grandchildren. Angela is also blessed to have her mother join her in Valdosta as well. They are happily surrounded by family. Big music lovers, Angela and Wade also like to get out and support the local restaurant scene and enjoy live music. There is usually a band playing somewhere most every night of the week. Angela really enjoys dancing, so Wade learned how to dance years ago so she would always have a partner.
They are passionate about Downtown Valdosta, as owners of a historic building, and Art and Soul, they know the importance of maintaining beautiful buildings. They also love to travel with family and friends, and they go on several trips each year. They also understand the value of spending time alone. Angela enjoys painting, has fun at Art and Soul, and makes time to volunteer. Wade also enjoys time alone. He builds tables and enjoys woodworking, as well as cooking and fishing. “There is so much to do here. We have always been very involved in charities and with that alone you could attend an event, or help with a fundraiser every week! We also love the arts, and the art culture in Valdosta is amazing from theatre, to visual art, to music, to dance...there is art everywhere!” Wade and Angela offer this piece of advice to newlyweds: “Each year is different. Most years have been great, but some not so great. Taking marriage vows seriously is key, because if you stay married, you will experience every single vow. Our sweet Lord created everyone with great, good, not so good, and imperfect qualities - don't ever think you can change those traits, they are God-given! So don't go into a marriage thinking you can change someone! You have to acknowledge the differences, compromise, be patient, kind and communicate. If each person and their partner knows their virtues and faults, and they know what bothers their partner, they will be more sensitive and respectful. Most of all...always strive to give your spouse the very best of yourself, not what's left over after you gave your best to work, children or others.” | VM

That’ s KENJI & COURTNEY BOLDEN
Story by Mattia Goddard // Photography by Wes Sewell Photography
Six Blessed Years of Music & Teamwork
K
enji and Courtney Bolden joined the ranks of Valdosta citizens in 2016. Kenji was born and raised not far from Valdosta, in the orange groves of Sebring, Florida. He met Courtney in Kansas in 2012, while in pursuit of his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Emporia State University. Raised in a musical family and in the church, Kenji’s role as Director of Music Ministry for First United Methodist Church is a natural fit for his talents. He plays the piano and effortlessly sings beautiful traditional hymns, then he will switch to timeless Christmas carols, and just as easily he can play a contemporary gospel piece. His ability at the piano is astonishing, like it is an extension of himself, as he sings with his deep, full voice. When he is not at the church, Kenji can be found directing the Valdosta Choral Guild and performing with the Kenji Bolden Trio, and sometimes Quartet. His musical talents are so wide reaching he performs Jazz, Blues, Funk, and Soul. He and his band members play locally and as far away as Tallahassee. They perform at weddings, restaurants, bars, and have even performed at Wild Adventures on New Year’s Eve. During the school year, Kenji can often have rehearsals Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with performances on Fridays and Saturdays and church on Sundays. With a four-year-old, a six-year46 44

old, and a twelve-year-old at home, there is only one way this is possible: Teamwork. Kenji and Courtney work together, staying on the same page to make sure that during this busy season of their lives, when their children are young, they manage to stay on top of everything they have going on. Theirs is a musical family. Courtney grew up playing musical instruments, and Kenji is proud that his daughters and stepson can all carry pitch. Justin, the oldest child, is in the band at Valdosta Middle School and all of them have shown interest and skill with music. Courtney was born and raised in Emporia, Kansas, which is a small town, much smaller than Valdosta. She met Kenji, who was a friend of her brother, and they began dating. They had a small marriage ceremony on February 25, 2015, in Kansas, but because Kenji’s mother could not travel for it, they had another wedding ceremony day with his family in Florida later that same year in September. While Courtney misses her parents back in Kansas, she does not miss the weather or small-town life. She loves all that Valdosta has to offer. Because they have young children, much of their free time is spent doing kid-friendly activities. The kids enjoy local favorites like Red Lobster that their youngest, Scarlett, calls Red Monster. These days their schedule revolves around school and church. They make an effort to have fun together, lots of laughter fills their home, as well as plenty of music. When
they have down time, the family likes to binge watch Netflix as a way to relax. They love the beach. This past summer, they thoroughly enjoyed experiencing St. Augustine and with Kenji’s family close by, they were able to spend time with his mother and family during the holidays. They encourage each other’s dreams and give each other space to grow, both individually and as a couple. Courtney loves Kenji’s musical passion and always supports his plans and goals. Kenji is not one to stay idle, and is always working and improving. He says the only thing he is calm and still for is fishing, which is a pastime that he loves. Because Courtney spends so much time with the children, Kenji makes sure to give her time out with her girlfriends. She especially loves to have girls’ nights out at Steel Magnolias. Kenji’s advice to newlyweds is this, “It’s a journey when you say ‘I do.’” Once the flowers are taken down, the tuxes are returned, then the I do’s show themselves. For better or for worse, you don’t realize what it really means until you’re confronted with a cross country move and children enter the picture. Life happens. Then you realize, oh, that’s what it means. Really give it some thought, don’t rush it.” Both Kenji and Courtney place a high priority on a healthy prayer life. Courtney believes it is essential to pray for your spouse. “Always pray for your spouse. Never stop praying, even if you’re upset. Keep them in prayer.” | VM

HOME ADVICE
FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER? Written by TOM CALL
T
he prospect of buying a house can be scary for the first-time homebuyer. But, the prospect of not investing money in something of value and "throwing" it away on rent each month is even scarier for others. With a number of loan programs for first-time homebuyers and low-interest rates, it's still a great time to buy your first house. Financial Advice One of the first steps every first-time homebuyer should take is to talk with a lender. A lender will help you determine your budget. The lender will run your credit score and help you identify which loan program may best fit your needs. Many homebuyers still believe that you have to have a 20 percent down payment. Let’s be honest, not many people have that much cash sitting in the bank. There are a wide variety of loan programs available to a first-time homebuyer, ranging from zero percent down to over 10 percent down, with many first-time buyers choosing a 3.5 to 5 percent down payment. A lender can also provide you with a good idea as to what your monthly payments will run, taking into account property taxes, insurance, and the loan amount. While you may qualify for a maximum loan of $250,000, you may decide to go with a house that costs less in order to keep your payments down. Let’s be honest, no one wants to be “house poor” by spending so much on your monthly payments and utilities that there’s no cash left at the end of the month for other fun stuff. Find a “Matchmaker” Once your budget has been set, it’s time to find the right “matchmaker” to help you find the right house. This matchmaker, a.k.a. a real estate agent, will walk you through
Tom Call, Broker Premier Real Estate VALDOSTA, GA
the entire process of buying your house. So, it’s extremely important to find the right agent. There are a number of ways to choose an agent. Asking family and friends for recommendations and attending open houses are two great ways to find an agent. Don’t forget to do your research. It’s important to find an agent who understands your wants, needs, and situation. Go through the agent’s social media sites and website to get a feel for who he/she is and what they do. Does the agent have experience working with a first-time homebuyer? Is the agent someone you like and can get along with? Whether it takes you a week or three months to find the right house, you will be talking often with your agent and spending time together. It’s important that you can get along. Be Flexible As you begin your search, know that no house will be perfect. There will be little quirks with almost every house you tour. Develop a list of the needs, wants, and desires you are looking for in your first house. Share that information with your real estate agent so that he/she can incorporate that into the search. As you look, be open to suggestions. You’re bound to see some interesting choices in paint color and decor, leaving you to question, “Why in the world did they do that?” But don’t be afraid to look past the “outer beauty” and see the true potential the house has to become your first home. For example, some changes to a house are rather simple fixes. Flooring, paint, countertops, etc., can be changed over time. The location cannot. Don’t Wait for the “Perfect” Moment When you find a house that truly interests you, don’t wait to make an offer. Buying in this tight market presents a unique set of challenges. Regardless of how long a house has been on the market, it is one offer away from going under contract. In Valdosta, it’s not uncommon for a house that is priced right to receive multiple offers within days of being listed. Have Fun Buying your first home shouldn’t be a chore. Sure, it can be a challenge, but at the end of the day, you’ll have a place to call all your own! Give us a call at Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate today to get started! | VM

helma Force, affectionately called Sister, celebrated her 90th birthday at The Crescent on December 4, 2021, with her entire family in attendance. Celebrating milestones at The Crescent holds a special place in the family’s history. Sister was the first bride at The Crescent where, on June 11, 1955, she married Everett Gornto Force. On two other occasions, a family wedding or reception was held there. To return for such a significant celebration seemed only fitting and brought the life of Sister Force full circle.

1st Bride
Sister with her daughter, Deena Hunter, and granddaughter, Lauren Hunter Malone
Sister was born on December 6, 1931, in Valdosta and has lived most of her life in Valdosta except for brief stays in Ocala and Miami, Florida. She graduated from Valdosta High School and Valdosta State University. Her father was killed in an automobile accident when she was in fifth grade, and her family then lived with her Mother’s parents, James Littleton and Mae Belle Touchton Spivey, on Webster Street. Her grandfather, James Spivey, Sr., was the Lowndes County Sheriff for many years. The idea to have her birthday party at The Crescent was an easy one for the family. "It is a special place for her. Every time we ride by there she says, 'that's where it all began,'" explained Sister's daughter, Dena Hunter. “It is such a special place for our entire family,” Dena said. “Our paternal grandmother, Beulah Gornto Force, was a member of the Valdosta Garden Club and was instrumental in securing The Crescent for our parent’s wedding in 1955. My wedding reception was held there in 1981 and my daughter, Lauren Hunter Malone, was married at The Crescent in 2015.” When Sister was asked about her memories of that blissful day she was married at The Crescent she said, “I remember he was a good-looking man and a good man. We had so many special friends and family members there to celebrate that day.” She has lived in the same house for sixty-seven years – the house her husband built for them. So, for Thelma "Sister" Force to celebrate such a milestone at The Crescent was very fitting – like coming home again. After all, as she says, "The Crescent is where it all began." | VM

FARMERS OF THE YEAR / PROFILES
First Annual Farming Recognition Event Names Farmers of the Year STORY AND PHOTOS BY MEGHAN BARWICK
griculture is Georgia’s number one industry and the agriculture industry represents more than $337 million in annual farm gate value within Lowndes and Echols counties. In December 2021, farming was highlighted for the important role it plays in the economic vitality of the region with an appreciation breakfast recognizing two farming operations as large and small Farmer of the Year. The inaugural event was a joint effort between the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners, Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, and the Lowndes County Extension Office, to recognize farmers in Lowndes or Echols counties.

“Lowndes and Echols Counties have a rich tradition of being large farming communities and providing an abundant supply of food and fiber to not only our community and state but all around the world.” Bill Slaughter, Lowndes County Board of Commission Chairman. “Lowndes and Echols Counties have a rich tradition of being large farming communities and providing an abundant supply of food and fiber to not only our community and state but all around the world,” said Bill Slaughter, Lowndes County Board of Commission Chairman. “The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners are proud to recognize our farmers and show appreciation to them.” "It would be difficult to overstate the importance of agriculture to our community, local economy, and state. The Chamber was thrilled to show our appreciation for our hard-working agricultural community,” explained Christie Moore, President, Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce. “It would not have been made possible without the support from our partners including, Lowndes County Board of Commissioners, our sponsor, CJB Applied Technologies, Georgia Grown, and the Lowndes County Extension Office. We are grateful to have partnered with entities who share the same strong appreciation for our local agricultural community,” he said. Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black was the keynote speaker for the breakfast. The plan is for the Farmer Appreciation Breakfast to become an annual recognition event. | VM
At the event, Jared and Justin Corbett with Corbett Brothers Farms were named Large Farmer of the Year, and Aaron Horne with Horne Legacy Farms was named Small Farmer of the Year from the forty-six nominations received.
Corbett Brothers Farms Following in their father's footsteps, Justin and Jared Corbett took over Ken Corbett Farms at the beginning of 2019, which is now known as Corbett Brothers Farms. They specialize in growing a multitude of crops including bell pepper, squash, and cucumbers. Corbett Brothers Farms also opened the first U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified citrus packing facility in the State of Georgia. They also grow a trademarked brand of citrus located in many grocery stores known as Besties.
Horne Legacy Farms Aaron Horne owns Horne Legacy Farms, a family-owned and operated blueberry farm located in Valdosta, Georgia. This small family farm operation provides blueberries to local distributors and holds an annual "u-pick" event that helps give the local community a fun agriculture-centric experience.

We Must Never Forget Garden at The Crescent Honors the Sacrifice of Veterans
N
Com p i l ed by Jo hn Rid d le
ovember 2021 marked the centennial of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which was dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 1921, following the end of World War I. The repatriated remains of an unknown member of the American Expeditionary Forces were interred at Arlington National Cemetery on that day and have provided a final resting place for unknown soldiers since then. To commemorate the anniversary, the Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier issued a nationwide invitation to plant individual and public gardens as a visual way to represent “America’s sacred duty to remember our veterans and their families, now and for all time.” Locally, two organizations, the General James Jackson Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Garden Center, owners of The Crescent,

answered the call to honor our fallen warriors and collaborated to create the Never Forget Garden which was dedicated on November 11, 2021, at The Crescent. Patti Strickland, a member of both organizations, and Vicki Fenstermaker, representing The Crescent, spearheaded the planning, fundraising efforts, and design of the garden which includes engraved memorial bricks. Beth Hendrix, of the General James Jackson Chapter, planned the dedication ceremony attended by veterans, members of both organizations, and dignitaries including Congressman Buddy Carter. After a program inside The Crescent, participants followed the music of a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace to the Never Forget Garden where they participated in two minutes of silence to “ponder the sacrifices of veterans past
and of warriors to come.” Afterward, a trumpeter played Taps at the end of the ceremony. A marker stands in the middle of the garden with an inscription that reads: “THIS GARDEN IS A LIVING TRIBUTE TO ALL OF AMERICA’S VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. IN SILENCE AND RESPECT, THIS IS A PLACE TO REMEMBER WHY MILLIONS OF AMERICANS HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR OUR LIBERTY AND OUR FREEDOM. HERE WE RENEW OUR PROMISE TO FULFILL AMERICA’S SACRED DUTY TO NEVER FORGET. HERE WE RENEW OUR MUTUAL PLEDGE TO SUPPORT THEM WITH ‘OUR LIVES, OUR FORTUNES, AND OUR SACRED HONOR.’” The Never Forget Garden now stands in the public gardens of The Crescent as a place of honor, remembrance, patriotism, love, and mourning for anyone who wishes to recharge and remember America’s sacred duty to recognize, remember, and honor our veterans. | VM

VSU COACH / PROFILES
Blazer Nation’s New Leader Tremaine Jackson, VSU’s New Head Football Coach STORY BY KILIE HUCKLEBY & JOHN RIDDLE PHOTO BY PAUL LEVY VSU
B
lazer fans have a big reason to be excited with the announcement in January of Tremaine Jackson as the new head football coach for the VSU Blazers. Jackson brings experience in shaping winning football teams to the winning tradition of the VSU football program which just competed in the national championship playoff game in December. Jackson comes to Titletown from Colorado Mesa University where he was head coach and went 10-3 in his two seasons including 8-2 this season and posted a thrilling 26-21 victory over then-No. 3-ranked Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 23, 2021, for homecoming. It was the Mavericks' first victory over a top 5 opponent since they became an NCAA Division II school in 1994. Jackson's squad went 2-1 in the spring of 2021 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Prior to Colorado Mesa, Jackson was the defensive line coach at Texas State and before that served as defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian (2017-18). At Abilene Christian, Jackson led one of the biggest defensive turnarounds in the country as the Wildcats recorded their first winning season in their Division I history in 2018 (6-5). After they were ranked last in the country before his arrival, Jackson's defensive unit ranked amongst the nation's top 25 in five different team categories in 2018 after leading the Southland Conference in pass defense in 2017. “I am very excited to have Tremaine join our Blazer family,” VSU’s Director of Athletics Herb Reinhard said when made the announcement. “The football programs he has been associated with have had great success on the field. Tremaine also has had an impressive track record of his teams excelling in the classroom and playing a prominent role in the community. I look forward to the work he will do with our young men.” Jackson, a 2006 graduate of the University of Houston, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies, is excited about being at VSU. “I am honored and humbled to be named the Head Football Coach at Valdosta State University,” Jackson said. “There are three main things that attracted me to Valdosta State: the history, tradition, and brand of VSU football, the chance to compete on the national stage
every year, and the chance to be coached by a seasoned Athletic Director like Mr. Reinhard.” The new head coach is currently evaluating players for the 2022 season looking for a history of success on the field. But Jackson also puts a strong emphasis on the ability to communicate and create relationships which he believes can help build a much stronger team. “People listen to winners and I want to be part of an athletic department that changes lives. If we do people right, the game will be alright,” he said. Jackson, VSU’s eleventh head coach and the school’s first black head coach, looks forward to building on the past success of the football program. “It is my intent to continue and enhance the storied tradition of Blazer football for many years to come.” No one is rooting harder for his success than the Blazer Nation. | VM

new amphitheater park being developed in downtown Valdosta is scheduled for completion this summer. Located at the corner of Lee Street and Central Avenue, it will provide a much-needed venue space for downtown, as well as, green space including a walking path, park benches, and landscaping. The development of a Downtown Amphitheater Park was a Mayor/Council Action Item agreed upon at the 2020 Strategic Initiatives Summit. “The hottest thing we have going right now is our Downtown, it makes perfect sense to keep that rolling with the addition of our beautiful new amphitheater,” said Mayor Scott James Matteson. “I can envision standing amongst a crowd of 5,000 people this Summer enjoying a big-time concert and community gathering. We are all craving some normalcy and without a doubt miss our friends and neighbors, this will be a gathering point for this community for decades to come.” Since the ceremonial groundbreaking in April 2021, the park has gotten a lot of attention. "The park has The park is scheduled to open in Summer 2022. proven to be extremely popular even in its undeveloped stage and has hosted multiple events over the last two years," explained City Manager Mark Barber. "This new venue will bring more people to the Downtown area and can be used for so many great events such as concerts, food truck events, movie nights, as well as make the Downtown area more vibrant and beautiful." The Valdosta Main Street staff is excited to see this project come to fruition and start planning events in the new venue. "Downtown Valdosta's amphitheater is destined to become a central gathering place for activity, growth, unity, and energy. This project will create increased visibility for local shops and restaurants and create more interest in investment in downtown, which will improve the quality of life for Valdosta residents. Easy-Cheesy Crab and Mushroom Mac n’ Cheese
4 cups whole milk 5 oz gruyere cheese 6 oz mild cheddar (I used white cheddar) 8 oz Italian cheese blend (I used a six-cheese blend, but it's your preference) 16 oz jumbo lump crab meat, drained of any excess liquid 1 cup croutons 2 cloves garlic 1 tbsp dried parsley DIRECTIONS
EASY-CHEESY CRAB AND MUSHROOM MAC N’ CHEESE Rich and decadent, but fairly easy to prepare, this mac n' cheese will keep you warm and cozy on a cold winter night - whether you serve it alone or with some tasty veggie sides, this is a dish that is sure to impress. INGREDIENTS
4 oz pancetta 8 oz sliced mushrooms (I used the gourmet blend from Publix) ¼ cup cream sherry 2 cups fresh spinach, shredded or finely chopped 16 oz pasta - I prefer cavatappi or corkscrew 4 tbsp butter 4 tbsp flour 70
Valdosta Valdosta Magazine Magazine
• Bring water to a boil in a five-quart pot. • Cook pasta according to directions. Drain pasta into a colander and set aside. • In a large skillet, cook pancetta until nice and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove from pan into a small bowl and allow to cool. • Add mushrooms to pan and sauté for 2-3 mins, just until tender. • Add sherry to pan, and sauté for a couple minutes more - just until sherry is mostly absorbed. Add in spinach and stir for one minute. Remove from heat and set aside. • In a large pot, melt the butter. Add the flour, whisking constantly. Allow to brown for just one minute, then whisk in the milk. • Whisking occasionally, allow milk to come to a simmer. Stir and cook until thick. • Remove from heat and stir in cheeses. • When cheeses have melted down, stir in pasta, mushroom mixture, and the crab meat. Salt and pepper to taste. • Pour into a greased 9x13 pan. • Combine garlic, croutons, parsley, and reserved pancetta in a food processor or blender. Pulse until nice and crumbly, and sprinkle over the top of mac n’ cheese. • Bake at 375 F for 30-35 minutes until sauce is bubbly and crumbs are toasty. • Serve with a side of your favorite veggie (I served steamed broccoli and cauliflower), and enjoy!
APPLE PECAN CRUMBLE Whether you serve it for a healthier dessert option, or for a lighter breakfast, this little crumble is warm and comforting with all the coziness of those familiar fall / winter flavors we all love. INGREDIENTS
3 apples, cored and cut into chunks 2 tbsp butter 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ cup cranberries ½ cup chopped pecans ½ cup granola ½ cup plain Greek yogurt 2 tsp honey ½ tsp vanilla 2 tbsp pecan butter 2 tsp liquid coconut oil DIRECTIONS
• Combine butter, apples, and cinnamon in a skillet. Sauté on high for 5-6 mins until apples are just tender. Stir in pecans and cranberries. • Combine yogurt, honey, and vanilla together in a small bowl and set aside (can also use sweetened vanilla yogurt). • Mix pecan butter and coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl and heat on high for 30 sec intervals until melted and easy to drizzle. • Layer in individual serving bowls, apples first, then yogurt, pecan butter and granola. Makes 5-6 servings.
Apple Pecan Crumble GRANOLA While some might consider it "extra" to make your own granola, I like having the freedom to add what I want. Adjust however you like and add whatever you want - but you'll love the way your house smells while it's baking, and everyone will be ready to gobble this straight out of the oven while it's still warm. INGREDIENTS
1 ½ sticks (12 tbsp) butter ½ cup honey 2 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp orange juice 2 tsp vanilla
8 cups rolled (old fashioned) oats 1 cup flaked coconut 1 cup nuts of choice
DIRECTIONS
• Melt butter and honey in a large microwave safe bowl. Whisk in brown sugar, orange juice and vanilla. Stir in oats and coconut, making sure that the liquid mix evenly coats all of the oats. Spread oat mixture out on parchment lined pan. Bake at 300 F for one hour, checking and stirring every 20 minutes. Toss in nuts and bake for another 10-20 minutes until evenly browned and toasty. Cool and store in an air-tight jar for up to six months. Winter 2022

hristine Cabral is a professional artist who not only produces art as a career, but teaches it as well. Art has always been a major part of Cabral’s life. From an early age, she expressed herself through art, a passion she never questioned pursuing. She recalls being young and staying up late into the night drawing. A Valdostan since the age of two, Cabral

ART IS CABRAL’S LIFE’S WORK earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Valdosta State University and a Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in mixed media and installation from Florida State University. She taught as an adjunct professor for a couple of years in VSU’s art department. When an opportunity to teach art to elementary students arose, she added an art education degree and has been an art educator for twenty years, currently part time at St. John’s Catholic School. Some of Cabral’s earlier works, created while in graduate school, were three-dimensional, welded and sculptural works, installation pieces and 78 80

found objects. She would stiffen fabric and mold it into human forms and install scenes in a gallery setting to recreate a memory. Although now Cabral mostly paints acrylic on canvas, she occasionally incorporates mixed media fabrics and vinyls. There’s never been a time she wasn’t producing art for exhibit and sale. Art is Cabral’s life’s work. She reflects that this journey has seen some vicissitudes, especially after the death of her beloved mother and biggest supporter, Anna Taormina, in 1997. The mourning over this loss affected her artistic style and expression, which was touched by grief. Eventually, Cabral evolved into a
style with powerful imagery and universal appeal. She often features a red chair, which she observes “is symbolic of her own childhood memories as well as the loneliness and void created when one loses a parent.” Old toys and playful vintage images connect to childhood joy, sometimes forgotten. She carries this concept into her contemporary abstract pieces, on which she will saturate a canvas until she achieves a “moment of clarity” – then apply bright whites or foggy taupes until she achieves a magical, ethereal quality that captures emotion, connection, and time. Cabral’s commission pieces receive this focused

devotion, capturing magic in layers of paint on canvas for her clients. In early 2020, Cabral’s work was shown in an exhibit titled “Remnants” at The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. This particular collection of works explored the bond between mother and child through the changing seasons of life: being a child, losing a parent, having children, and embracing the joy of motherhood. In “Remnants,” Cabral’s art pays tribute to the mother who, she notes, “raised me to become the mother I am today.” She also shows at the Turner Center’s “Artoberfest,” held annually in October, as well as their “Spring into Art” and “Drawproject.” Married with two small children, Cabral enjoys a nice studio space in her home. She can be found painting there or outside on the patio in the fresh air. She finds that painting needs perspective, and she likes to take steps back and view a piece in progress. Those details in the piece (like the red chair of her childhood) may begin as a vivid, remembered object, then end veiled or covered, just like memories of objects in the mind. Because she has an innate desire to make art as a form of expression, Cabral states that it is something she will always do, without regard to sales or exhibits. That professional passion, a process and a path, is certainly apparent. To see more, visit christinecabralart.com. | VM

THE SPLENDID AND THE VILE: A SAGA OF CHURCHILL, FA M I LY A N D D E F I A N C E DURING THE BLITZ
F CROSSROADS
S
by Jonathan Franzen (2021)
et in 1971 in the fictional Illinois town of New Prospect, the first section of this nearly 600-page novel is titled “Advent” and the final section, “Easter.” The Christian connotations apply symbolically, as “Crossroads” is the name of the church youth group around which the plot revolves. Although this group features some evangelical ethos -charismatic leader, fund raising, serving others – the youth aren’t busy praying and studying the Bible. They are busy playing guitar, smoking cigarettes, and sharing feelings (some heated). They seem typical of the Woodstock era. Russ Hildebrandt, the disillusioned associate pastor of First Reformed Church, contemplates an affair with a young widow and holds a grudge against the youth group leader, but he’s not the most compelling character. Each of the Hildebrandt family (except the very youngest) tells their own stories: Marion, the secret-keeping wife and mother of four; Clem, the college student who confronts his Vietnam status; Becky, the beautiful high school “Miss Popularity” who yearns; and finally, Perry, the brilliant and witty drug user/dealer. You will find humor, nostalgia, and humanity in this unforgettable modern masterpiece.

a decade or so after September 11, 2001, that sparked his realization of how different that experience had been for New Yorkers than for those “who watched the nightmare unfold at a distance.” So - he focused on London and the German aerial assault of 1940-41 with its unimaginable 57 consecutive nights of bombing followed by intense raids that exacerbated, wreaking mass destruction, but not destroying morale over the next months. Larson’s tome is not a biography of Churchill, but rather the backstory of how he helped his country manage daily survival under Hitler’s “tempest of steel.” One surprising tidbit gleaned from his meticulous research into artifacts like diaries, letters, and newspapers is that not everyone reacted positively to his famous “We shall fight…” speech delivered in Parliament on June 4, 1940, following the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk. Larson continues to prove that “History is a lively abode, full of surprises.”
THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD MOTHERS
Narci Drossos describes herself as a compulsive reader, saved in her youth by a summer bookmobile librarian who ignored the bi-weekly limit of five books; thus, allowing her in one summer, to go from Harriet the Spy and Nancy Drew to David Copperfield and Jane Eyre. She holds three degrees from Valdosta State University and has been teaching English at Valdosta High School for over 30 years. She’s published book reviews in ELLE magazine and online on Instagram @novels_with_narci, where she’d appreciate a follow and your feedback on this VM feature using #VMbookreview.

han’s debut novel, released in January, hit the authors’ lottery by being named a “Read with Jenna” selection and thus an instant New York Times bestseller. The plot centers on a contemporary Philadelphia mother, Frida Liu, who has a(n) [unforgiveable?] lapse of judgment when caring for her

A neighbor calls CPS and Harriet is taken away. Frida’s being Asian is mentioned often, as is her ex-husband, the tall, white, and handsome Gust. They are divorced and share custody. Gust and his new girlfriend, Susanna, a lovely new age type “goddess” seem to support Frida in her efforts to regain her parental rights, but the judge sends her to “The School for Good Mothers” which is really for BAD mothers. The oft-repeated mantra is, “I am a bad mother, but I am learning to be good.” On so many levels, reading this bizarre, dystopic story is horrifying; it’s the train wreck you can’t resist slowing down to look at. Chan’s gift is not only constructing an unexpected satire on American parenting in the modern age, but also in evoking sympathy for Frida. This one will have your book club debating.
Billy has never forgotten a single word he’s read, and he mythologizes the story of the Lincoln Highway. The story begins, sort of, with his dream to find the mother who abandoned them years previously. Billy’s yearning for his lost mother is the heart of the story, and he believes that they will find her in California. They encounter colorful detours along the road in Emmett’s Studebaker, a suitably bigger-than-life car. Readers have embraced this story with its themes of home, family, and love, although some quibble about the ending on social media. Avoid the spoilers and read it for yourself.

hefty and pithy journey novel of nearly 600 pages, Towles’s narrative reveals the turning points of three young men in the 1950s, only one of whom, Emmett, is legally released from reform school in Nebraska. You can rightly assume that he’s the voice of reason. The point of view alternates between teenagers Emmett, Duchess, and Woolly, with contributions from smart Sally, Emmett’s neighbor, and precocious Billy, his younger brother.

itoniak, a Yale graduate, was an editor at Random House prior to writing this impressive debut novel. Her protagonist, Sophie Morse, is a seasoned but principled White House correspondent for a New York magazine. Lara Maine is the Russian-born, former model First Lady who asks Sophie to write her memoir. The compelling dual narrative is split between Sophie and Lara in present-day Washington, D. C., and cold-war era teenage Lara in Moscow and Paris. There are engaging details of both Sophie’s and Lara’s daily lives that ring with authenticity: romance, conflict, danger, and travel. Does the first lady seem familiar? Yes. The tense action, enough to satisfy thriller fans, builds to stunning revelations.

id you know that when you preorder a book, retailers will ship it early so that it arrives on your doorstep on its release day? You will want this one ASAP. A UNC at Chapel Hill graduate, Myers grew up in Asheville, N. C., and spent her summers in Winston-Salem. Her grandmother was a hairdresser for the wives of R. J. Reynolds executives, and those experiences inspired this historical novel. During the 1940s, people had such pride about tobacco. It was touted as “good for your health” – although the growing, cropping/ harvesting, curing, and manufacturing into cigarettes was often brutally laborious. Few may realize that this work was accomplished by working class women when their husbands went off to WWII, while the rich tobacco executive wives gave teas, lunches, dinners and balls. What will happen when the golden future of “Bright Leaf” tobacco is threatened? Maddie Sykes, a young seamstress, has access to them all, sewing coarse uniforms for the factory wives and elegant silks for the “tobacco wives.” What she learns and the ultimate outcome will keep you turning pages and thinking twice when you next see the popular “Tobacco Leaf” porcelain pattern. | VM

Lena Bosch lived a life of service. She was not only a leader in the arts community, having been a founding member of the Annette Howell Center for the Arts, but in other aspects of the community as well. She served as president of the ValdostaLowndes Chamber of Commerce. But her service extended across the state as well as the first female to serve as the president of the Georgia Automobile Dealers Association. She was also a torch carrier for the 1996 Olympics. Community leaders remember her fondly for her devotion to service and her friendship. “I was privileged to work with Lena years ago in the chamber. She was always a classy lady and very talented in so many ways. If you were around her very long, you would notice her faith and she was not ashamed to share it with others. I'll cherish her memory,” stated Glenn Copeland. The inaugural Lena Bosch Lifetime Achievement Award was established to recognize Bosch’s lifetime of contributions to the Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Commission (LVAC), the Turner Center, and the overall arts community. It will recognize individuals who
“have exhibited outstanding, creative, innovative, and visionary leadership in the growth and advancement of the arts in our community through involvement with the Turner Center.” “Lena was a lifelong friend of Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Commission and to countless people in our community,” said LVAC President Bruce Smith. “It is
an honor to remember her life in this way and to celebrate the dedication of others with an award that bears her name.” A six-member awards committee will accept and judge the nominations based solely on the content provided on the award applications. The committee's selection is also subject to approval by the LVAC Board of Directors, before being officially announced to the community. “My mother lived her entire life serving others,” said her son, Bart Bosch. “She loved the arts, and she loved people. I cannot remember a time during my life when my mother was not serving the Turner Center, fundraising, or expanding opportunities for others to appreciate the arts. This award continues her legacy through the contributions of those who receive the award.” The award announcement will be made at Spring Into Art Gala opening on April 11, 2022. The name of the initial award recipient (and future recipients) will be displayed on a plaque that bears Bosch’s bronze image, located in the Price-Campbell Gallery in the Turner Center’s main facility. Recipients will also receive a commemorative award. | VM Winter 2022 Winter 2022
