VALDOSTA IS OUR HOME TOO! As they say, “home is where the heart is.” I guess that’s why our annual “Home Sweet Home” issue is one we, and our readers, really look forward to each Spring. It certainly is one of the most beautiful issues we publish. That is possible only with the help of our many advertisers and local experts who provide stunning images and design advice on how to make our own homes even more appealing. And, of course, our friends who open the doors of their homes – and hearts – to share their beautiful homes with all of us. If “home is where the heart is,” then part of our heart is in Valdosta. We have made so many friends and are fortunate to work with so many interesting people in the community. Of course, none more endearing than Lamb Lastinger, whose husband, Johnny B. Lastinger, started Valdosta Magazine with Wink Devane more than 20 years ago. We love running into Lamb at social functions and always look forward to sharing each new issue with her. She is still one of Valdosta Magazine’s biggest advocates helping ensure each magazine gets into the “right hands.” As always, many thanks to all those who helped make this issue possible…and…beautiful! We encourage you to leave no page unturned and no word unread. You’ll be glad you lingered with this issue!
Sincerely,
John & Connie Riddle

A Design-Build of Their Own Todd & Kelly Wilson’s New Build in Eager Neighborhood
STORY BY JOHN RIDDLE | PHOTOS BY WES SEWELL PHOTOGRAPHY

hat should you expect when you walk into a custom home designed by a nationally-recognized designer and builder awarded Southern Living Magazine’s Builder of the Year; a home that he and his wife built for their own family? Well, simply put, you expect to be dazzled! And this new home by Todd and Kelly Wilson certainly delivers! Todd Wilson, and Wilson Design & Construction, have been in the design and construction business for over two decades. Todd has designed and built some of the area’s most recognizable homes including South Georgia’s first-ever Southern Living Magazine Showcase Home featured in Valdosta Magazine’s “Home Sweet Home” 12

last spring. So, understandably, we are thrilled that the couple agreed for us to feature their new home in this year's issue. With their daughter and son-in-law living nearby plus their three sons still living at home, the home design needed to be spacious enough to accommodate the couple’s large family while also remaining intimate enough for those rare occasions when it’s just the two of them. This modified, open-concept design with the master bedroom and guest room on the main level and three additional bedrooms upstairs accomplishes just that. The originality of the design comes into view immediately upon making the turn into the cul-de-sac
Home Sweet Home The stairs are located with easy access by family members from the kitchen and side entry. The unique detail for the area includes paneled walls, a diamond-shaped clerestory window, and sisal risers on the steps. The diamond shaped window is a pattern repeated in the home’s design.

that the couple developed with the purpose of locating their new home. The arched porch design provides an elegant focal point and includes a custom door – painted a pleasing blue--a flickeringgas copper lantern, richly detailed siding and corbel details all surrounded by lime-wash finished brick and a copper bay roof. These elements all combine to instantly add a sense of history and character to the home. And, the home offers a variety of unique interior and exterior places and private spaces for family and friends to gather including a sunroom just off the kitchen, an upstairs den and music room, and a covered outdoor living space complete with a dining table and fireplace overlooking the pool. When walking through the home with Todd, it’s the attention to subtle detail, some of which one might otherwise miss if they were to rush through, that make this custom design really come together. For instance, the details for the kitchen island which include corbels matching the front porch, the eclectic lighting choices the couple made, sisal that Spring 2019

Home Sweet Home covers the stair risers, the herringboned-patterned brick in the back hallway, and the skylight in the master bathroom shower. But if Todd can claim responsibility for the overall home design, it’s Kelly, who gets the credit for the interior décor. Many, maybe most, homeowners rely on experts to help in color selection, determining finishes, and furniture placement – Kelly has her own distinct style blending classical elements, traditional furnishings and new – even a little edgy – design details that really make for spectacular living spaces. To accomplish her goals, Kelly utilized local vendors and a few trusted consultants but, in the end, she is her own curator. It is her style that combines the flair of the dry bar’s coral painted cabinet and patterned wallpaper with the mix of traditional furnishings in the dining area and heirloom pieces throughout the home. Together, Todd and Kelly make a great team. They have designed, built and styled a beautiful home on Ravenwood Circle in the Eager neighborhood filled with exquisite detail, and distinctive elements – this time built not for others, but for a home all their own.

A space might typically be designed as a back porch, Todd and Kelly integrated this space into the home by opening the kitchen with a serving bar and French doors to the outdoor living area and pool. The hallway, boasts a herring-bone brick floor which connects the sunroom to the back of the house and access to the garage, a half-bath, laundry and working pantry. It is one of the more unique spaces and a favorite of Maggie, the family’s black lab. Before & After
A closet awkwardly split the space in the guest bath. It was removed to make room for a much-needed walk-in shower, complete with a corner seat and glass door.

The original tub/shower in the guest bath was dark. In its place now is a fantastic soaking tub with attractive fixtures. The tub is surrounded by decorative tile.
Bathroom
Makeover I STORY BY ERIN MCCLOUD, MIZELL FLOOR COVERING & INTERIORS, INC.
t all started as I was escorted through Joe and Marghy Smothers charming 1970’s home. It was warm and inviting, with delightful features that were characteristic of the time period. My tour stopped at the top of the stairs as I was shown into the master bathroom. All the tile and fixtures were original to the home and had seen lots of love and wear. I was then taken down the hall to the guest bathroom, which was also in need of a makeover. The Smothers’ number one request: for these bathrooms to be nicely updated with the guidance of a professional, because handling it all independently was going to be quite daunting.
Custom vanities were made for each bathroom, crafted exactly to the homeowner’s preferences.
24
Valdosta Magazine
Home Sweet Home We started with inspiration concepts and color schemes. The Smothers wanted light and airy neutrals with lots of texture. We discussed shower tile designs and selections. Once a plan was set in place, the demolition began. We expanded the footprint of the tiny master bath so that it could accommodate a double vanity. A bulky closet was torn out of the guest bath to make room for a spacious walk-in shower. Both of the old shower spaces were stripped down to bare bones. It was a whirlwind dance of framing, plumbing, sheetrock, fresh paint, and lighting.
The old shower in the master was gloomy and closed; it felt tiny. Tearing out part of the right wall and finishing it off with a glass door made it open and bright.
The finished product? Two brand new bathrooms that practically sing when you walk in the doors. The updated showers are open, and they get ample lighting through glistening glass doors. The guest bathroom boasts a gorgeous soaking tub. Both bathroom spaces are much more functional. But the best thing about this remodel: the homeowners are thrilled, and that’s the absolute best kind of satisfaction!
Extending the master bathroom into the bedroom a bit and installing a convenient pocket door for access from the bedroom created enough space for the homeowner to have a double vanity.

TAKING YOUR
Outdoor Living to a New Level
By Outdoor Living Proficient Pool & Landscaping
Let’s imagine for a moment…
I
magine yourself basking in a natural mural painted with fragrant flowers and shrubs, or a canopy of trees, as you sit and relax on comfortable cushioned chairs while trickling water dances nearby to your favorite music. The reality of bringing the comfort, style, convenience, and tranquility of indoors to the outdoors is closer than you might imagine. Creating your own backyard oasis might include adding or remodeling a swimming pool, a new paver patio, creating an outdoor kitchen, water features, landscape lighting, and more. Let your imagination take over to bring your outdoor living and enjoyment of your backyard to a new level. However, one of the most important decisions you will make is choosing the right company in helping make your outdoor living dreams a reality. The right partner on this project will walk you through the entire process of selecting the most durable products and the highest quality design to help you achieve and maintain your outdoor living space.
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU GET STARTED:
• Decide what you want in your
landscape/outdoor living design: Before you call on the landscape contractor or visit your local garden
26
Valdosta Magazine
center, it’s best to have a plan. What is the primary purpose of changes in your outdoor living space? Are you looking to transform your yard into an outdoor oasis? Or are you more interested in how your landscape can provide fresh veggies and healing herbs for your family? Start by gathering photos of the type of space you want including various features. The more you know about what you want, the more someone can help you.
• Create a Budget: While it is hard to
know what a project will cost, you should know what you have available to spend. Choose a company who can meet your landscaping/maintenance budget.
• Make a list of your “must-haves” and
then a list of your desires: While your budget may dictate your final project, must-haves Must haves may influence which extras you choose. No matter what
you spend, if you do not get your “musthaves” you will not be happy.
• Choose a company to design
and implement your plans: Many components factor into your final decision about who should partner with you on making your outdoor-living dreams a reality. Some of the most important factors to consider are having a team approach to the project and that the company you choose is experienced and knowledgeable. Request a certificate of insurance for Workman’s Compensation & General Liability. It’s YOUR dream! Don’t trust it to just anyone. Choose a company that not only can help you envision, but also design and create the new outdoor living space that you and your family can enjoy for years to come.
Brent Moore II is a Valdosta native that grew up loving to work outside with his grandfather. Brent started the business eight years ago maintaining lawns and one pool. Today, Outdoor Living Proficient Pool & Landscaping employs 25 plus people. Brent is married to Amanda and they have two children.

A Kitchen Renovation STORY BY JOHN RIDDLE | STYLED BY KATHRYN LOTT

utton and Donna Miller are empty nesters so when they decided to down-size they wanted to update their home’s interiors to attract more potential buyers. “It ended up as a stemto-stern renovation. All the bathrooms, the kitchen, a new roof, exterior paint, new wood floors, basically everything,” explained Dutton. The updating did the trick. The house sold quickly, and they are building a new home in the same neighborhood. The “heart” of the renovation was the kitchen. It’s extensive make-over included all new finishes, an expansion into the existing breakfast room, and rearranging some of the appliances for better flow. They are excited

about the kitchen, but they didn’t agree with all of the concepts initially. “Todd Wilson convinced us to remove a wall that separated the kitchen from the breakfast room in order to open things up. We were concerned about losing our upper cabinets on that wall,” Dutton said. That decision turned out to be one of the most significant changes. “We ended up adding storage space by increasing the lower cabinets and by adding drawers for storage under the overhang on the island. It worked perfectly,” Donna explained. We now store dishes and glassware down low in the drawers. It simplified emptying the dishwasher and we ended up with a beautiful open and more efficient kitchen.”

The refrigerator and cabinets housed on that wall were moved across the room replacing what had been a built-in desk and shelving. Many homeowners choose Granite for the rich, unmistakable elegance if offers as a natural building product. There are many options for color and texture to take your home renovation project to the next level. Because it’s an extremely hard material, Granite is suitable in many different applications: Granite is also heat tolerant, suitable for installation near a range or cooktop, or in a bathroom where high-heat hair tools may be present. Granite may not be the right fit if you prefer a uniform look in your home, as each slab of this material brings unique shading and striations. Granite resists scratches and stains, and can withstand normal wear and tear with proper sealing and maintenance. It requires a minimal annual re-sealing to protect against stains and prevent it from harboring bacteria.
You might a consider quartz countertop if you want a streamlined look with clean lines, as the slabs are extremely uniform due to its composition of natural stone mixed with resins. As a manufactured product, there is a wide range of colors available for quartz. Because it’s non-porous, Quartz does not require sealing or special treatment, and its surface prevents the buildup of bacteria. It’s resistant to staining, acids, and scratches, so all you need is water and a mild detergent for cleanup. If your personal tastes tend to be more traditional, the modern edginess of quartz may not fit with your design style. Quartz seams can be more noticeable due to the solid colors. Quartz can discolor when exposed to strong sunlight so is not recommended for outdoor settings.
H MARBLE: If you’re looking for spectacular, sophisticated appeal, a marble countertop may be the right choice for you. It’s an igneous stone, meaning that it derives from solidified lava, so marble offers a stunning display of color and veining. You may have concerns about installing Marble due to its porous nature; it’s even more porous than Granite and will absorb liquids, so oil, wine, juices, and acids will penetrate quickly. The stains can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Because the minerals that compose marble are sensitive to certain chemical agents, it is important to wipe spills away quickly. Anything acidic will leave an etch mark if left on the stone for too long. Marble needs to be cared for in the same manner a fine piece of wood. While marble is quite durable, it may not work well in busy kitchens where it can be scratched by knives or chipped by heavy pots.

having a kitchen in which it’s easy to store and find items.” Having a large island that functions as both a work area with extra storage below as well as a casual eating space with bar stools is a space saver. The surrounding custom cabinetry and built-in storage units add to the room’s efficiency and enhance the clean lines and modern style. 3. QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS. The Houzz study also found that Quartz was the most popular countertop material in 2018. It has become a growing alternative to granite and marble for its durability, versatility and custom appeal. 4. FULL-TILE FEATURE WALLS. With the popularity of open first-floor layouts and kitchens with wall-free transitions, there is more of a need for a focal point. 1. CABINET COLOR. Replacing or repainting dark, dated cabinets is a priority in any kitchen update as cabinets are both an aesthetic and functional focal point which get noticed immediately by buyers. Bright white shaker cabinets remain a current favorite to brighten the space and provide a clean, modern appeal. Or, add on-trend navy blue for perimeter cabinets and a built-in pantry and coffee bar to add depth and contrast to the white subway tile backsplash, white Quartz counters, wood flooring and stainless-steel appliances.
5. MIXED METALS. Designers are now selecting a mix of metal finishes for faucets, hardware, lighting and appliances to add a new level of depth, sophisticated style and personality to a space. A House They Love to Come Home To STORY BY JOHN RIDDLE AND DOUG CARTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY WES SEWELL PHOTOGRAPHY
I
t seems as if Cathy and Brian Peters have lived in their home in the Crestwood neighborhood for years though they only purchased it in 2016. The interior design is timeless which helps create the impression they've always been there. And, in their hearts, they've always seen themselves in this home. “We had admired the home for years so when it came on the market it didn’t take us long to decide we were ready to buy it,” Cathy said of their decision to leave the home where they had raised the oldest of their three children, Clay, Emily, and Hatcher, near Hahira. For the most part, they mainly had cosmetic work to do – repainting the walls and having the floors redone – however, a few walls were moved to provide a better flow and open up the living spaces. Guiding them through the home's transformation was Doug Carter, of Carter Design and Consulting. Incorporated into the interior design is the family’s story and their love of outdoors – the Peters are farmers – and Cathy’s love of blue and white accent pieces which were inspired by her Mother. The family enjoys the various spaces, the formal dining room, a gentlemen's room that has the feel of an English country estate, and the large living room with skylights that "…make it very cozy when it rains…", but, more than anything – at the end of the day – it's a house they love to come home to.
Cathy Peters in the living room/sunroom, the family's favorite, in the back of the house. The window walls and skylights allow the space to be flooded with natural light. The antique early French plate rack on the wall is one of the oldest pieces in the home, and it hangs above a welch cupboard. Not originally a set, Doug Carter married the pieces as a perfect combination in this room.

The gentleman's room/library replete with a fireplace was initially used as a quaint and comfy family den in the original design. After the addition of the large sun room, this room seemed to lose its function simply "holding the house together." The Peters needed a space to showcase their love of the outdoors. Doug helped them transform the odd connecting room into a handsome richly appointed conversational space perfect for a cold Winter evening.

The formal dining room, formerly the "out-of-date formal living room" greets you as you leave the foyer area. The fireplace is flanked with matching built-in cabinets loaded with a collection of blue and white porcelain. To help with the symmetry, the original dining entry from this room was closed and filled in with one of these cabinets transforming the original dining area into a nicely scaled home office.

Books are needed in a bookcase. While accessories do the “heavy lifting” when it comes to staging, books definitely play a big role too and should be included. A neutral palate is great to showcase pops of color. When you start with a

Layers add dimension. Don’t think you can only hang a picture or mirror on a wall. If you have a cool architectural element that can be the base for something else then have fun with it! You don’t need something on every wall and in every corner. Less is usually

Blue & White
THE REVIVAL OF A TIMELESS CLASSIC
B
STORY BY DOUG CARTER Carter Design and Consulting
lue and white has been a staple in interior design for centuries. This dramatic color combination is a timeless classic that has always found a way to stand the test of time in well appointed traditional interiors. Once limited to Chinese export porcelains, this rich indigo and white color pallet has reinvented itself into textiles, wallpapers, and floor coverings too. First discovered in Persia during the 9th century, cobalt ores became the ingredient used to decorate and adorn Chinese wares as early as the 14th century. Through shipping and various trade routes by the 18th century blue and white porcelains adorned the homes of wealthier British and colonial homes. The fascination with the blue and white has remained deep rooted in the traditional Southern interiors.
42
Valdosta Magazine
Various fads and phases have influenced its appeal briefly at times. But, like gold/brass finishes or hardware, richly patterned wallpapers, and bright white painted kitchen cabinets…blue and white is back stronger and as desirable as ever in well appointed Southern interiors. Making me pose the question…. is this truly a blue and white revival…or is it just yet another time to recognize a classic once again?
THE USE OF BLUE AND WHITE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE LIMITED TO THE KITCHEN OR DINING AREAS. SOME INTERIORS CALL FOR A MORE RESTRAINED USE OF BLUE AN WHITE. OTHERS, LIKE THIS BEDROOM EMBRACE THE DRAMATIC COLOR COMBINATION IN FULL FORCE.

Blue and White porcelains have been prized possessions of homes for centuries. This large antique tureen shows the laborious measures many would take to ensure this prize possession remains in the home. Notice the primitive staples used to “glue back” this broken piece.

Simple, Thoughtful Touches
to Update Your Home with the Seasons STORY BY MARY BETH SMOTHERMAN, PERFECT SETTINGS
M
any people decorate their homes for the holidays. From Christmas lights and Easter wreaths, to giant Thanksgiving cornucopias, holiday decorating can be a huge (and fun) task. But what if you just need to add a little "fluff" to your home that isn't so "holiday specific"? Often, my friends and customers ask me, "What is an easy and inexpensive way to update my home as the seasons change?" My answer is simple. Purchase fun and happy items for your powder room or guest bathroom! Adding a few consumable goods that coordinate with the time of the year will make your guests feel welcomed, comfortable, and prepared for. Not only will your home smell amazing and look pretty, but your guests will be excited to use your new products!

My favorite additions to any guest bathroom are: • A seasonal candle • Colorful guest towels • A nice room spray or potpourri (or both) • A sink set with hand soap and lotion For an extra special touch, cut a few flowers or some greenery from your backyard. Add these to a beautiful bud vase to make your home extra inviting. When is the best time to "fluff" your powder room or guest bathroom? As the seasons change or before hosting guests at your home. This is a quick and easy step to add to your entertaining checklist! You and your guests are sure to enjoy your simple, yet thoughtful seasonal touches. "I love to help Valdosta discover the art of entertaining!"

BUILD OR REMODEL YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO Just like building or remodeling a home, your investment portfolio requires a selection process that is in line with your needs and goals. To meet goals, investors must identify their objectives and an investment mix to help them pursue those goals. When it comes to investing, greater reward generally carries greater risk. If you’re looking for a smart way to reduce investment volatility while still retaining growth potential, then consider the advantages of asset allocation. Asset allocation is the process of deciding what percentage of your money to put into the three major asset classes: stocks, bonds, and cash. Because each type of asset responds differently to shifts in the economy and financial markets, some investments may be up while others may be down. With asset allocation, a portfolio may experience less fluctuation in value than individual assets within the portfolio. This investment technique may have a significant impact on the ultimate success of your portfolio. In fact, asset allocation has more influence on portfolio variance than any other single investment decision. In the study shown below, asset allocation was shown to account for as much as 91.5% of the variation in total return, far outweighing other significant factors such as market timing and security selection.
Asset allocation may help you maximize portfolio return at a reasonable level of risk, create a prudent diversification of investment assets, meet financial goals, and accommodate your risk tolerance, investment time horizon, and tax situation. Once you define your goals, time horizon, and funds needed, you can begin to choose appropriate asset classes, and diversification strategies, that will help develop the right portfolio for you. There’s also something more to consider: your tolerance for risk. For an investment strategy to work for you, it’s imperative that you’re comfortable with the risk you assume. Even though your financial situation may point toward a higher level of risk, your peace of mind might dictate a more conservative investment plan. Investing today is about more than stock picks and bond selections. In fact, stocks and bonds are only a small part of the equation. It’s important to spread investment dollars over various asset classes. While diversification and asset allocation do not ensure a profit or protect against loss, a combination of money market, fixed income, and equity investments can provide potentially higher returns than either money market or fixed income investments alone. The current investing environment offers numerous alternatives. Talk with your financial advisor about what investments might be best for you. Asset allocation is not a static strategy. To be effective, an asset allocation plan should be reviewed periodically. Also, any changes in your financial goals, lifestyle, time frame, and financial circumstances, plus changes in market conditions, could necessitate revision of your asset allocation plan.

“I am extremely honored to be selected as Georgia’s TIME Dealer of the Year and represent the new car dealers across our State. My father was also a former Time Dealer of the Year so to be able to share this award with him is especially an honor and makes the recognition even more special,” said Jay Prince, Vice President of Prince Automotive of Valdosta Inc., and Georgia’s 2019 TIME Dealer of the Year. He was among the 51 selected nominees to be honored beating out more than 16,000 candidates nationwide for what is one of the industry’s most prestigious and coveted honors. After graduating from the University of Georgia in Athens in 1993 with a B.B.A. in accounting, Prince started his professional career working in accounting firms in Atlanta. By 1996 he became a certified public accountant. It wasn’t until a year later when his father, John B. Prince III, opened a Chevrolet-Mazda dealership in Valdosta and asked his son to be general manager, that Prince discovered his passion for the automobile business. “I wanted to earn the respect of my fellow workers so I worked tirelessly – and I do mean tirelessly – to make my dealership successful,” he said. Since then Prince has become a member of the Georgia Automobile Dealers Association where he has held several positions of leadership. With his long-standing dedication to community service, it

Prince has also been a long time affiliate of the Greater Valdosta United Way, serving on the board for a number of years. “My work with the local United Way resulted in successfully raising $1.25 million when I was campaign chair in 2005; expanding the group’s reach into four additional counties; and bringing new car dealers of Valdosta together to donate a portion of their proceeds from the sale of new vehicles,” but he didn’t stop there. Prince participated in the United Way’s Day of Caring where he completed hands-on projects for local charities. As a board member for the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, Prince was able to launch the Think B.I.G Campaign in 2005. The campaign strived to promote local commerce among individuals and businesses in the area. Even though he and his family’s auto group have received various awards for their philanthropy, Prince is proudest of the recognition he has received from his father. “My most meaningful achievement would be the respect that I have gained from my mentor, my father, as an astute business person and for his praise that I have done a great job,” says Prince. It is the only Miracle Field in the country that has space for four sports: baseball, track, soccer, and basketball. Last month, the organization held the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, inviting the public out to “play ball!” The Miracle Field is surrounded by four standard baseball fields and has a large pavilion and concession stand that are both fully accessible, as well as a boundless playground where children of all abilities can play together for a truly inclusive experience. VLPRA Executive Director George Page says the Parks & Recreation Authority Board made it their mission to highlight inclusivity by building a full complex to complement the field. “We wanted to make sure that all the leagues participate side by side,” Page said. “It’s important for our youth leagues to play at the same and in the same space as the Miracle League. Meet the 2019 STAR Students from Four Valdosta High Schools
T
he Georgia Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award is awarded to the senior with the highest SAT score in one sitting who also ranks within the top ten percent of their class. Nominees’ SAT scores must be equal to or be higher than the SAT National Average scores on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. High school STAR Students are asked to name their STAR Teachers. Statewide, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation sponsors the program and has honored more than 25,000 high school seniors since 1958.
Each school’s STAR student and STAR teacher are honored at a local banquet. The highest scoring STAR student is awarded the region title and will go on to the state competition in Atlanta where they compete for PAGE STAR scholarships and awards. STAR Teachers continue on with their STAR Students at every level of the program. STAR teacher is truly one of the most prestigious honors for a teacher, because the student selects him or her from every teacher he or she ever had. Here are this year’s local STAR students and STAR teachers:
Georgia Christian School STAR Student Michael Yared – STAR Teacher – James Lee
Valwood School STAR Student Mary Lacey – STAR Teacher – Peter Allen
Georgia Christian School has named Michael Yared as its 2019 STAR Student. Yared is the son of Nada Yared of Lake Park, Georgia.
Valwood School named Senior Mary Lacey as its 2019 STAR Student. Lacey is the daughter of Brian and Jamie Lacey.
Yared is the third of three siblings in his family to achieve STAR Student. He has participated on the Math team, played soccer, and this year won 2nd place at the State Literary Competition in Spelling. He has volunteered for many projects for Interact club. Yared plans to attend Georgia Tech in the fall, where he will pursue his dream of studying Math or Physics. “I am honored to receive the STAR Student award,” Yared said. “and I would like to thank my family as well as the GCS staff for supporting me all these years. I couldn’t have gotten here without them.”
Lacey is a member of Science Olympiad and the National Honors Society. She received the composition award in ninth and eleventh grade and the drama award as a sophomore. Lacey has been in numerous drama performances and spent the summer of 2018 in the Governor’s Honors Program at Berry College. In the fall, Lacey hopes to attend the University of North Carolina.
Yared has chosen James Lee as his STAR Teacher. Lee teaches high school math at Georgia Christian. He is in his 27th year of teaching. Lee said, “I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to teach Michael Yared in high school mathematics. He is an extremely bright young man who exhibits great qualities among his peers, such as integrity, humility, and an attitude of service. I look forward to seeing great accomplishments by him in mathematics and physics. I wish him well in the Georgia Tech Honors Program.” 60

“This award is a huge honor, and it makes me thankful that I have such a strong network of family, friends, and teachers that have inspired me and believed in me throughout my academic career. I am so glad that I am able to share this success with them." As for the reason Coach Allen was selected, Lacey stated, "I choose Coach Allen for STAR teacher because he has allowed me to grow as both a writer and a person. He was the teacher that pushed me the hardest to succeed in the areas where I am the weakest: writing and comprehending advanced literature."
Valdosta High School STAR Student Noah Carroll – STAR Teacher – Gnann Moser
Lowndes High School STAR Student Joyce Liu – STAR Teacher – Becky Martin
Valdosta High School Named Noah Carroll as its 2019 STAR student.
Lowndes High School named Joyce Liu as its 2019 STAR student. Joyce is the daughter of Chunlei Liu and Li-Mei Chen. Liu is not only the 2019 Lowndes High STAR Student, but she is also the 2019 PAGE Region 10 STAR Student. As top student in the region, she will attend the 2019 State PAGE STAR Competition in Atlanta.
Carroll suffers from a chronic illness called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which kept him hospital homebound from the latter part of his eighth-grade year up until the end of tenth grade. Being hospital homebound prohibited him from extensively competing with some of the extracurricular traveling teams, making his recent academic achievement more of a triumph; although despite his health, he was able to participate in Math Club, Drama, and Academic Bowl. This fall, Noah will attend the University of Texas at Austin in order to study mechanical engineering at the Cockrell School of Engineering. Carroll chose his Advanced Placement English teacher, Gnann Moser, as his STAR teacher. Moser, who has taught English for 43 years (37 of them at Valdosta High), is thrilled to be named STAR teacher for the fifth time. Regarding Moser, Carroll asserts, “She offered me help when I was battling my chronic illness, and my writing has improved tenfold this year.” Moser has high praise for Carroll as well, saying, “Noah Carroll is truly one of the most interesting students I have taught in a very long time because he interjects amazing insight into literary analysis in both classroom discussion and compositions despite his dislike of the English/Language Arts Curriculum.” Moser was pleasantly surprised that she won, since the previous four students who selected her, like Carroll, were also partial to Math and Science and not English.
Liu has previously been chosen for the Governor’s Honors Program in Science, the Junior Academy Science Research Program, the Lowndes Youth Leadership League Class of 2017, was invited to the Princeton University Creative Arts and Humanities Symposium, and earned 2nd Place in State FBLA Business Communications. Liu also competes regularly with the Lowndes High Math Team, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science Olympiads. She is a member of the Lowndes Ambassadors, Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America and plays the clarinet in the Valdosta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Liu plans to attend Emory University where she will major in Biology to pursue a medical degree. Liu selected Becky Martin as her STAR Teacher. “Mrs. Martin’s class sparked my curiosity and compelled me to learn more,” Liu said. “She has also been incredibly supportive, providing me invaluable advice and going out of her way to help me succeed. Mrs. Martin constantly motivates and inspires me, and I know I can go to her whenever I need to do so.” About Liu, Martin responded, “Joyce Liu is amazing! Not only is she the first student in Lowndes High School's history to make a perfect 1600 on her SAT, she is also very active in the leadership of many clubs and organizations on campus. She has been accepted to Emory, Harvard, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and UNC. Joyce is a stellar student in character and personality as well. She is humble, kind, and funny.” Spring 2019

Getting Ready For Spring BY MICHELLE LAMB, LEMONGRASS DAY SPA
T
he long days of winter blues are beginning to come to an end here in Valdosta, Georgia. The days are getting longer, warm sunny days are replacing the crisp, cool mornings, and soon the infamous heat of South Georgia summer’s will be here before we know it. As the seasons quickly change, it is easy to find yourself caught up with demanding tasks. Gardening, spring cleaning, making summer plans, or strenuous work projects. Whatever you may be facing this spring, it is important to remember that self-care is the key to stress relief and relaxation!
Skincare We tend to focus mainly on our skin during the cold winter months when dryness, irritation, and redness seems to be most prevalent. But it is important to nourish the skin year-round. Spring may be beautiful, but without proper practices in place, it can bring about undesirable changes in your skin. Harsh UV rays from the sun can cause issues in your skin pigmentation and lead to dark spots. It also can deprive your skin of its natural radiance and moisture, causing wrinkles, and dullness. Dust and pollen can clog pores and lead to unwanted break-outs and even cause an influx of oiliness. Luckily, an easy way to combat these issues, starts with a good skin care routine followed day and night. We recommend cleansing your skin first, followed by a toner to help keep your skin clear of any dirt and oils, then hydrating your skin with a moisturizer that contains SPF to protect your skin from the sun. Try our Coola Sunscreen products for weightless coverage that is essential in the warmer weather. Our Repechage Skincare has something for every skin type, and full of supplements and antioxidants that are sure to keep your skin protected and give you that wonderful “glow from within”! We also recommend stepping into our spa to experience our Hydra Facial MD or Repechage Sheet Masks, to give your skin that extra ounce of love it needs this spring!
this case we recommend our painless, deep-tissue, therapeutic massage to alleviate any pain caused by desk jobs, gardening, or even chronic discomfort. For a quick fix for soreness at home, try regular stretching or our Lemongrass hot and cold compression packs to deal with stiffness in different body areas.
Getting Ready For Spring Taking time to relax is the easiest way to fight stress from everyday life. And it can be done very simply right at home! Spring cleaning is a famous term for decluttering and re-organizing and a great way to transition out of the winter months. A clean home is a clean mind space. Next time you find yourself in the cleaning mood, try taking a few drops of an essential and adding it to your mop bucket. For the warmer months, we recommend something fresh and clean like Eucalyptus, Lemon citrus, Lemongrass, or Jasmine or Geranium for a more florally scent. This will not only leave your home with a pleasant aroma; essential oils are a great way to keep yourself relaxed! Spring time is a beautiful time of the year known for rejuvenation and new life. The trees are turning green and the flowers are beginning to bloom. With so many wonderful things going on around us, it is easy to hang onto those dreadful winter blues. Remember to take time for yourself, and take a deep breath when things get too hectic. Here at Lemongrass we are here to put your mind at ease during your visit with us and provide you with a relaxing experience you will not soon forget.
Massage Therapy Your skin isn’t the only thing that could be signaling seasonal changes and stress. Back and joint pain or persistent headaches could be a sign from your body that it is being over-worked. In 62

THE WHO, WHAT, AND HOW:
Deviled Eggs JASON RUSSELL, CHEF & FOOD ENTREPRENEUR

S
pring is here with it's backyard barbecues, luncheons, and weekend brunches. The age-old spring dish of Deviled Eggs will find their way on the menu soon enough. Arming yourself with a few tips, some creativity and a solid recipe, you could be the next talk of the event presenting the deviled eggs.
with pickle relish or with a similar garnish on top.
Who: This southern staple can be traced back to ancient Rome, highlighting the beginning of a meal. Although, their recipe didn’t call for Duke’s Mayo (which is the secret to any great recipe). After several variations, and centuries later, the “deviled egg” did not appear, as we know it until about 1896 in one of the first appearances in a Boston cookbook suggesting mayonnaise and mustard as a binder.
How: Start with peeling— be sure to take your eggs from the cold refrigerator to the boiling water, this helps the shell release from the egg. Cook for 14 minutes and cool off in cold water immediately, until eggs are cold to the touch. Swirl them in the cold water, having them slightly bump and crack, then start with the air pocket at top of egg and chip away, rinse under cold water when done. Next tip is for travel. Unless you have a dish made just for carrying deviled eggs, you will have a hard time keeping them clean on a regular dish. Try a mini muffin tin or ice cube trays work beautify. CHEF TIP – Try cutting the eggs vertically for a new way to present them.
What: -is up with that name? Well, the jury is still out as to the complete origin but it picked up the “deviled” part in Britain, which often refers to spicy or minced. Composed of simple ingredients, this dish is of course the boiled egg, yolk filling mixed with mayonnaise, a tangy/spicy component like mustard and texture, either
Popularity of this classic dish has grown over the past few years, as chefs play with creative variations, from pimento cheese, bacon, crab, smoked salmon, wasabi, chorizo and even a crowning spread for biscuits. The options are endless and only limited to your creativity.
Pimento and Ham 12 large eggs ¾ cup freshly grated sharp Cheddar ¼ cup jarred pimento (drained) 1 Tbl. Dijon mustard Pinch ground red pepper Optional Toppings: Sliced green onions, diced country ham, sliced pickled okra, spiced pecans
14 minute. Cover, remove from heat, and let stand 10 minutes. Drain. STEP 2 Place eggs under cold running water until cool enough to handle. Peel under cold running water. Cut eggs in half lengthwise; remove yolks. Reserve 6 yolks for another use.
HOW TO MAKE IT STEP 1 Place eggs in a large steel saucepan (not nonstick). Add water to depth of 3 inches. Place cold eggs in water. Bring to a rolling boil; cook
STEP 3 Mash remaining 6 yolks with mayonnaise using a fork. Stir in cheese and next 3 ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon into egg whites. Serve with desired toppings.

W
alking into Dedo Maranville’s home, one is immediately embraced by her warm southern hospitality. Dedo is a potter—no, that’s too limiting—she’s much more than that one word. Yes, she is a potter, but that isn’t the only word that defines her. She’s an artist, a passionate romantic, a storyteller, a therapist, a lover, a connoisseur of Jeeps and not least of these, an animal lover. Greeted like a lifelong friend, she immediately began the tour of her home pointing out different pieces that she has created over the last few years, and all this before the front door has barely closed.

Maranville hasn’t always been a potter. This passion was found later in her life. She was a hairdresser for 35 years, and didn’t even know what pottery was. One day, she watched the show “Throwing Clay” on the DIY network. It was a show about the potter, Bill Van Gilder. She was hooked. “I told my husband,” she said, “ I am going to do that stuff where you put it in that big ‘thing’ and you fire it.” “I didn’t even know what a kiln was,” said Maranville. She went about the normal channels one might to learn about this new art form, but to no avail. She contacted her sister who had taken pottery in high school who told Maranville that she would show her how to sinter and raise a wall. If she couldn’t do those two things, her sister told her to go on to something else. Maranville spent the next six months learning sintering and “pulling up.” After that, she spent two and a half years practicing day in and day out. “The good news is that I can do stuff that you’re not supposed to do, because I don’t know any better,” she said with a smile. To hear Maranville talk about her husband, Jesse, you’d think they had just met. Sweet and romantic, it’s a nice break from the dismal stories one might normally hear of relationships that have lasted half as long. Jesse built her the two rooms where she does all her work and spends so much of her time. To step into these rooms, it’s like stepping into her imagination. One is surrounded by all the elements of her creations, from the un-molded clay, to paints, to the kilns that are waiting to fire the next creation that leaps into existence from her mind. In her glaze room, she has two kilns, shelves of her own 72

creations, and even a few that aren’t. She joked with her husband recently that she needed more room and may have to expand into his grilling area. Her pottery isn’t what you might think of when you think of pottery. It’s colorful and often whimsical. From a sock monkey that she has sitting on a shelf to a tiny Mexican church which will feature a tiny dove hanging inside; if she can think it, she can make it. She doesn’t try to make what everyone else makes, she likes to do her own thing. She’s not in this to make money and many of the pieces she has made she still has because she creates for herself. She doesn’t even enter art shows anymore. “Throwing” clay, the term used for making pottery, is akin to therapy for her. It helps to relieve her anxiety and escape from the rote of the everyday. “When you come out into these two rooms, you don’t bring anything with you,” she says. Even now, she gets excited whenever she opens the kiln. When she works, it’s just her and the clay. Listening to 60’s music (her favorite), she creates these pieces solely for herself, sometimes multiple times. She believes that she can always do it better the next time. Some of her pieces, she won’t even glaze, for fear of ruining it with the heat. She comments that she can often spend hours just painting some of her pieces and that requires a tremendous amount of patience. She feels that she must accomplish something worthwhile each day to maintain balance in her creative life. Such is the value and mark of an artist’s life.
Dedo found her passion for pottery later in life. She’s an artist, a passionate romantic, a storyteller, a therapist, a lover, a connoisseur of Jeeps and not least of these, an animal lover.
