from the PUBLISHER
Each year, we enjoy publishing the “Love and Marriage” issue of Valdosta Magazine because we are inspired by stories of love and life of the newlyweds and couples who have been married for many years. The brides, and wedding related articles, provide good advice for brides to be and help us remember what a magical day one’s wedding day truly is.
As time goes by in marriage, we learn to adapt and deal with so many “opportunities” that arise. The couples featured in “That’s Amore,” share that love and laughter are key to embracing those “opportunities” and making the most of them.
Love is highlighted in various ways in this issue of Valdosta Magazine. The love of art by a long-time potter, the love of books by a teenager, the love of music by a music teacher, the love of farming, and more. We’re always amazed by the love of

volunteers in the community who support non-profits through gifts of time, talent, and treasures. And, the love of community expressed by local entrepreneurs who continue to invest in Valdosta, and many others, who continue promoting and making Valdosta the incredible community it is.

MY ADVICE
Brides listen to a lot of people when trying to plan for their perfect day. But, who better to offer advice to brides-to-be than actual brides? Here is some advice from White Wedding brides and consultants on how to make the most of your wedding day … and the days leading up to it.
“In the stress of planning and preparing, don't forget to slow down and enjoy every moment, because one day it will all just be memories.” — HOPE FUTRAL
Pe le
OVER
IT'S THE BRIDE THAT MATTERS
Policy
After ten years in the wedding industry, one thing we’ve learned for sure is weddings are wonderful and memorable, but they often come with unwanted stress.
As much as brides and their families want to enjoy the experience, the multiple layers of planning, orchestrating parties, and people can take a toll. More personally, many brides plan a wedding while they are enduring another major live event, like trying to complete a college degree. Also, brides and grooms are often just starting their adult careers and feel an enormous amount of pressure to perform at work. All these events are exciting life moments but when combined can be overwhelming.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the fact that combining new families while respecting each other’s traditions and opinions is a daunting task, to say the least. And lucky for us: the bridal appointment is often the first time these parties convene!
Bridal party appointments often include moms, stepmoms, future mother in laws, grandmothers, bridesmaids, and more! The dress shopping experience is fun and often everyone wants to be included. But too many opinions and a passive bride who wants to respect everyone’s opinion can be a recipe for disaster that ends with decision
fatigue. That’s why an experienced (“magical”) bridal consultant is a must! They must be a dress expert, fashion guru, counselor, planner, a best friend to the bride in the moment, and a referee at times!
Because of the sensitivity of the moment and the importance of the experience, we threw “policy” out of our business motto years ago! When helping a wedding party at any stage, a “people over policy” strategy is a must. Brides speak their own language and have their own set of limitations – there is no space for factoring in business policies during this time. To dissolve the layers of stress, our goal is to be creatively helpful with no limits. What one bride needs or wants may be totally different than the next. Even the sweetest bride respects that there is an appointment after hers but, at the same time, she really doesn’t want to think there are any other brides in the world at that moment. And that is understandable.
Deciding to be married, planning a wedding, and enjoying your special day are some of the of the most important moments in life and we want to fan the flames! We believe the most successful wedding vendors consider this same approach when helping brides with planning and decision making. | VM
Article by BROOKE WHITE, Owner, White Weddings Bridal
“Enjoy the planning process because you only get to be a bride once! Do what makes you and your fiancé happy. Try not to stress so much over the details and remember that what truly matters is that you are marrying your best friend!” — CARLY MARCHMAN
“Its easy for wedding planning to become the overwhelming topic of conversation. Be intentional about setting aside time for you and your fiance to talk about and do things other than wedding planning!”— CANDLER BROGDON
“Remember to breathe and enjoy every moment of the day. Remember that all the tears, late night planning and hard work are worth it!” — SAVANNAH SANDERS
“My advice would be to enjoy the day & the planning that leads up to it. You only get this day once! So let it be special!” — MEGAN MAY
“Having a timeline and schedule is extremely beneficial in executing a smooth and stress-free wedding day! Knowing where everyone is and what’s going on when is a lifesaver!” — DONNA
THOMAS, WHITE WEDDINGS MENSWEAR MANAGER
“Just because it’s a wedding doesn’t mean it has to be a family reunion. Invite the people who mean most to you and your fiancé and don’t be afraid to stick up for your marriage!” — ASHLEY
RUEHLE, WHITE WEDDINGS MANAGER
“Do not stress the day of; allow all your hard work to unfold and take in every moment, because it will fly by. Remember that your wedding day is about you and the person you love, so nothing else matters!” — CARLY
WILLIS
“It can be stressful not knowing when or where to begin to plan a wedding. I live by ‘the sooner the better’ and such is the case when it comes to organizing a wedding! Reach out on social media or connect with other brides to get their input of what they wish they knew going in and helpful tips. Especially if they’re a first time bride new to the game, they often don’t know what things cost or if they’re being overcharged for what they’re wanting, so really building up a supportive community that can educate + forming this community ASAP.” —

Start your happily ever a er in Valdosta.
Our beautiful city believes in preserving the past while celebrating the future. Many of our wedding venues are steeped in a rich history, each with its own unique story to tell. From rustic farmhouses and historical homes to golf courses and traditional churches, there’s a venue just for you.
.ahhh, I do.
a recipe for love
It all started with Giuseppe’s family restaurant, Mom and Dad’s Italian Restaurant, when Laura walked in and sat at Table 53, and the rest is history. Giuseppe and Laura have been inseparable ever since! Laura came from England in 2014 after gaining a golf scholarship in Oklahoma. She then transferred to Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia in 2017 to gain her Bachelor’s Degree and then her Master’s Degree in Business in 2021. In May of 2018, Laura and Guiseppe met at the restaurant, which has a rich family history that they now continue together.

“HAVING THE WEDDING IN VALDOSTA WAS SPECIAL BECAUSE IT IS THE PLACE WHERE WE MET. WE BOTH HAVE LOTS OF LOVING FAMILY AND FRIENDS HERE AND, IT'S WHERE WE WANT TO START OUR OWN FAMILY SOON. WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO CHOOSE LOCAL VENDORS WHO SUPPORT OUR FAMILY BUSINESS.”
Giuseppe is the fourth generation general manager of the business, and the history includes four generations and several families. His parents, Massimo and Cynthia, married on July 4th, 1983 and became partners with Massimo’s parents at the Thomasville Mom and Dad’s Italian Restaurant. In 1986, two years after the birth of their first son, Giuseppe, and two years before the birth of their second son, Vito, Massimo and Cynthia moved to Valdosta to open their own restaurant. Since then, Mom and Dad’s Italian Restaurant has been serving Lowndes County and the surrounding area, and Laura and Guiseppe are proud to continue the traditions started so long ago.
Giuseppe proposed in his parents’ home on Christmas day in 2021, with his grandmother's engagement ring. Giuseppe and Laura were officially married in January of 2022 by Honorable Judge Arthur McLane, with a phenomenal reception, complete with New Year’s Eve fireworks, on December 31, 2022! Laura’s parents, John and Cath Alexander, hosted the event at Fox Hill in Valdosta to
include all of their family members and friends in the celebration. Laura shares, “Fox Hill did an amazing job and has first class facilities for a perfect wedding venue. Having the wedding in Valdosta was special because it is the place where we met, and we were able to choose local vendors who also support our family business.”
The couple describes their wedding day as magical with many special moments for everyone to be together before the big day started! Laura loved time with her bridesmaids in the bridal suite, and she cherishes having her mother by her side while getting ready. She says of that time with her mother, “I can't thank her enough!” Looking back on the pictures, her favorite part of the day was the first looks

with her father, John, and most of all, with her new husband, Giuseppe. Their reactions were priceless, and those memories will never fade.
Laura’s family traveled from England, including Laura’s paternal and maternal grandparents, alongside Giuseppe’s grandmother, and they are so thankful that they were in attendance for the special day. To have Laura’s brother, Jack, be one of Giuseppe’s groomsmen and Laura’s sister, Zara, as her maid of honor was such a special blessing. Giuseppe's mother, Cindy, created the most spectacular wedding cake with 240 handmade sugar roses. Special traditions at the event included the bagpipes for Laura’s family that were played in the ceremony, their first dances, and traditional Italian and Greek favors! Guests were given bombonieres, which are candy-coated almonds, while Eddy Castellanos, the violinist, serenaded family and friends throughout dinner.
Laura and Guiseppe have traveled abroad together visiting their families, to England to see Laura’s family and to Italy to visit Giuseppe’s family. Their hobbies include hunting, fishing, golf and fine dining, of course, which they love to do together. Their family ties run deep, and Laura looks to the future in the community, saying, “Valdosta is special to us both with lots of loving family and friends, and it's where we want to start our own family soon.” It sounds like the perfect recipe for many more generations to come! | VM

Andie Krispin & Andrew Perham
love is in e air
It’s a small world, and that has a big meaning for Andrew and Andie Perham. After college, Andie moved to Spain and then to South Korea, teaching in an Englishbased kindergarten program. Andrew was also in South Korea, stationed there as an officer in the Air Force. The pair met online while both lived in South Korea, and they soon realized their shared roots, having both lived in Valdosta, Georgia years before — at the very same time! Andie, formerly Andie Krispin, was born and raised in Valdosta, while Andrew’s family lived there during his kindergarten and first grade school years when his dad was a flight commander at the 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron at Moody Air Force Base.

Story by MEGAN PIPER WHITE | Photography by CAPTURED BY COLSON PHOTOGRAPHY
The happy couple knew very quickly into their relationship that they had found the one, and a new assignment for Andrew in Germany sealed the decision to get engaged and married before that big move! Andrew planned a special night out at the Korean National Ballet in Seoul, which seemed like the perfect date for an engagement. However, hoping to surprise Andie when she was least expecting it, he proposed in her living room earlier in the day! Andie shares, “He told me he didn’t want to spend another minute without me as his fiancé.” Inside the ring box was a shared joke from a few weeks before: a Taco Bell hot sauce packet reading “will you marry me?” Andie recalls with a laugh, “Thinking it was a prank, I rolled my eyes and laughed at him, but then he pulled the real ring out of his
pocket. He so perfectly incorporated our inside joke and still managed to make the proposal a surprise for me. I love most that the proposal was goofy and fun, while still being sincere and emotional. It shows off all the best parts of Andrew’s personality and our relationship.”
Her family was instrumental in planning the event, as Andrew and Andie were planning from South Korea and needed “boots on the ground” in Valdosta to make all of their dreams come true. Paige Krispin, her mom, shared her tireless attention to detail and immaculate planning and organization, and her Aunt Kristin McLane let them use Park Place for the ceremony venue and had the fantastic idea of using Gud Coffee for the reception. Kat Krispin, Andie’s sister and Maid of Honor, was also a huge help, as were countless other people who volunteered to step in. The list goes on and on of their local support for their big day.
In fact, one of Andie’s favorite memories of their wedding was a special addition from her father. As an avid car fan, she can name any make and model on the road, and her dad made arrangements for their getaway car to be a 1955 Chrysler Windsor convertible. She shares, “It was such a great moment seeing that car!” A nod to Andie’s mom’s side of the family, originally from western Pennsylvania, was a longstanding tradition to have a cookie table at the reception. Guests enjoyed cookies with their wedding cake, and the treats also served as a small wedding favor with provided boxes to take them home after the wedding. Family connections are such a special part of weddings, and Andie wore her cousin’s veil, and her signet ring is a family tradition they’ve had for three generations.
Andie shares her advice for future brides: “It really does go by faster than you can imagine, and as you get older, the moments where everyone you love is together become fewer and farther between. Let yourself have time to savor the company of those closest to you on your big day! Having everyone that Andrew and I love together under one roof to celebrate our special day was the best feeling in the world. Especially when we live so far from home, there’s nothing quite as special as being together.” | VM

Wedding Flowers
Planning your wedding flowers should be a priority. A reputable florist tends to book two years in advance, so as soon as you set a date and choose a venue, start looking for a florist to plan your floral landscape for your beautiful day.
• Selecting your color palette and theme is the first thing to decide. Pinterest boards are wonderful to share with your florist. It helps them to see the vision you are gravitating to.
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more questions you ask, the more likely you will find a florist you can have a positive relationship with.
• Ask for a free wedding consultation before you make any firm commitments. This helps you discover if you are on the same page for your special day.
• Selecting a floral statement piece often has more impact than thinly spread decorations.
• Your wedding flowers should always enhance your dress and never overshadow it.
• From the start of the process, discuss your wedding flower budget so that the florist can help you optimize it. And the florist will clearly show you the
exquisite results and attention to detail you’ll get for your investment.
• Be flexible. Flexibility will help brides meet their budget requirements.
More than anything else, the most important thing is that you have fun and enjoy this special time!

Their intimate wedding turned out to be the perfect safe haven from the storm, with around 25 people in attendance, including most of their immediate families and the officiant and his family. They chose Valdosta because that’s where Caroline grew up, her parents still live there, and it’s where their favorite photographer, Wes Sewell, lives as well! “I grew up here in Valdosta, and Caleb moved here to be near me. It’s my home and being married in the location that I grew up in was really special.”
A tradition that they did choose to continue in their smaller, more intimate wedding plan was to light a unity candle together, as Caroline’s two older sisters also had unity candles at their weddings. The main thing they plan to remember is that the stress

of planning their wedding day didn’t symbolize what their marriage holds in the future. The day was beautiful, the people there meant a lot to both of them, and they each married their best friend.
When asked about her favorite part of the wedding, Caroline shares, “Caleb and I wrote our own notes to each other for the wedding day. Before the ceremony, we went outside with
our photographer and read our notes to each other. It was a beautiful moment and allowed us to remind each other of the love that we have for one another.”
After their wedding ceremony and a lovely lunch at her parents’ home, Caroline and Caleb were able to enjoy a getaway to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. When asked for advice for future brides, Caroline says, “slow down and enjoy the process. It’s a time in your life that you only experience one time. Also, remember that the end result is to be married to the man you love, so don’t stress, and just know that everything will work out the way it’s supposed to work out!” Hurricane Ian was a major part of their wedding planning, but the blue skies and sunshine they experienced after will carry them for years to come! | VM

celebrations
For the last six years, the Wooley family has been hosting weddings in Valdosta and beyond! Their five daughters have all been married within that time, with three of the weddings within the same 18 months. The youngest of the five girls, Amy Gail Wooley (now Amy Gail Kenerly) was the last of her sisters to get married. Her husband, John Lex Kenerly IV, is from Jesup, and he is the oldest brother of four siblings and the last wedding for the Kenerly family as well. By the time their wedding day came, both families felt like professional wedding planners! Truly, this special wedding felt like the last big celebration they needed to make them each complete.

For Amy Gail, growing up with five girls in the house meant there were times when it was absolutely crazy — there was lots of sneaking clothes from each other's closets, and "hurry ups" yelled trying to get them all out of the door — but those days held some of their best memories. “As the baby, I have had such incredible women to look up to my entire life. My sisters and, of course, our parents were and continue to be the best support system and such an example of the Lord's unconditional love. By God's grace, and the standards our mom and dad set, we all married men who fit well into our family and love us deeply. Now that we are all older, it is like having four built-in best friends, always. I think some of our best memories are still to come, and as my dad said to all of the girls earlier this year, ‘We've had enough memories to last ten lifetimes,’ and for that we are grateful.”
Amy Gail and John Lex have an interesting story of how they met. They were actually set up on a blind date by the pastor’s wife at their church in Athens, home of the University of Georgia, where Amy Gail went to college and John Lex went to law school. Amy Gail describes it, “She was mentoring me at the time and had mentored John Lex’s sisters before and thought we would be a good match. We still call Mrs. Lisa our matchmaker!” John Lex then reached out to Amy Gail and planned a date night. They started the date with dinner, then ordered cheesecake

later, Amy Gail fell for him too.” One thing John Lex and Amy Gail prayed about leading up to their wedding was that it would glorify the Lord over anything else and that it would feel like the sweetest celebration with so many people that they love. At the end of the wedding celebration, they shared that they were overwhelmed with feelings of love and joy and that it was truly one of the best days of their lives. Amy Gail shares, “The Lord has been gracious surrounding us with family and friends who love us so well and that day was such an example of it.”
Amy Gail’s grandmother, Anne Wooley, had a very special part in their wedding events. She gave Amy Gail her wedding gown to wear on the night of the rehearsal. Anne and her husband, M.C. Wooley, who ran the Lowndes County Paper Mill for over two decades, were married for 52 years before he passed away. One night, the family went over to Anne’s house after wedding dress shopping, and she mentioned that she still had her wedding dress. Amy Gail describes the scene well: “My sweet Grandma then went to the top of her closet and pulled her wedding dress out of a trash bag — top of the line preservation! I tried it on and
immediately knew I wanted to find a way to wear it. With alterations, I was able to wear it on our rehearsal night. It was truly one of the most special things. Grandma said later that night, ‘This might be one of the greatest nights of my life.’”
When asked what makes Valdosta special, Amy Gail shares, “This is where I grew up and where most of my family still lives. I think it really is the place that feels like home to me. It was where I met so many of the girls that were standing by my side on my wedding day, women who I know will be lifelong friends that I got to grow up with in Valdosta. Valdosta also provided a genuine community that holds many incredible people who had a major impact on who I am today.”
During her father-daughter dance at their wedding, to bring it all to a close, Amy Gail had the rest of her sisters join her and her dad on the dance floor. It was a complete surprise to her dad and a memory he often brings up. There were tears, laughter and uncoordinated dance moves, but it was so much fun for their family that is finally beyond wedding planning and celebrating all of the joy ahead! | VM

ven though Gaye and Frank George were born and raised a few miles apart in Lowndes County, they didn’t know each other until college. He went to Valdosta High and she went to Lowndes. In those days, there wasn’t too much cross-town mingling. Or at least, according to Frank, certainly not as much as the guys would’ve liked. With a four-year age difference, they were definitely not in each other’s high school orbit.
Gaye remembers Frank from her days of rushing Phi Mu freshman year at Valdosta State College. He was the sorority’s Sweetheart as a senior. She jokes that she remembers him, but he doesn’t remember her. This was when he was heading off and she was heading in. Frank left for MCG, where he spent the next two years learning occupational therapy. Gaye would be at Valdosta State College for two years, then at UGA for three, at the university's College of Pharmacy. They’d spend their education years just missing

each other.
After Gaye had been in Athens for a year and a half, she came home for Christmas. It was 1988. She ran into Frank, who was working at SGMC at the time. That is when all their near misses finally clicked. They dated that month of Gaye’s Christmas break and she figured as she returned to Athens that he’d go back to his life, but no, they continued to date. He’d come visit her and take her to Atlanta to see his brother and her cousin.
She took him to see his first real play at the Fox. It was Les Miserables and he fell in love with the theater. He took her to see her first MLB game. Dale Murphy was playing for the Braves. This was back when fans could drive up and get tickets five rows behind home plate. Gaye discovered she loved baseball.
“Part of falling in love is you want to do the things they love,” Gaye says.
Gaye and Frank continued to date all through the rest of her time at UGA and got engaged in the spring of 1990. When it came to proposing, Gaye said he planned a romantic evening.
Frank borrowed the sundeck of his cousin Joe and Mary George’s lake house. He lined the staircase with luminaires and had a friend serve them dinner. The meal was from the very popular restaurant at the time, Fiddler’s Green.
Their wedding was a traditional affair held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, which was formerly on Country Club. They filled the church, on what Gaye described as a cool, sunny spring afternoon, with Frank’s large Lebanese family, their church family, Gaye’s family, and friends from near and far. Gaye remembers fondly that Sue and Stan Cox catered their reception at the Crescent, while they were still at the Sheraton, shortly before they opened Covington’s.
After they married, the couple settled into work. Gaye was a pharmacist and Frank continued with the hospital. He did general occupational therapy. This means that he worked with any kind of patient the hospital had. That could be pediatrics, burns, orthopedics, neurology, hands — anything and everything. Frank explains that back then South Georgia didn’t really know much about OT. Occupational therapy
has been around since the 1900s but is not widely understood. It differs from physical therapy because it isn’t just the physical aspects of the body, but the cognitive and social needs as well. Frank explains it like this: “When you woke up this morning, everything you did, except the walking, everything you did — your showering, brushing your teeth, bathroom, dressing, cooking breakfast, leaving for work — all of those things are what occupational therapists get their patients back to doing. We get our patients back to work. Whatever that looks like to them.”
After 2½ years with SGMC, Frank left to do contract work regionally. He did that for seven years before opening his own specialty clinic. In November of 1998, he opened Valdosta Pediatric Therapy Services. Everyone thought he was crazy to specialize in children, but he says peds was always his first love. He loves helping children. The pediatricians in town, and in a 45 mile radius, were so happy to have somewhere to send their kids who needed help, and that caused Frank’s practice to take off. This year his clinic will have been in business for 25 years.
“If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.”
On the home front, Gaye and Frank raised three children in Valdosta. Their eldest son, Judson, has followed in his father’s footsteps and become an occupational therapist as well. He spent his formative years playing baseball, another George family tradition. Their middle son, Cannon, lives in Macon and is in management. He spent his years in Valdosta swimming competitively. Their youngest child, their daughter, Evans, is following in her mother’s footsteps and is in Pharmacy school at UGA. She, like her mother, enjoyed dance for many years here in Valdosta. She’s also left her mother the joy of her horses. Gaye spends many hours mucking stalls and feeding and cleaning the horses. Gaye loves to say, “We don’t regret a minute, a mile, or a dollar spent on our children. It was all worth it.”
As these two Valdosta natives contemplate the future, they think they’d like to travel this beautiful country. Gaye would like to see parts of Europe too, but they are having a good time enjoying each other, and the quiet of their South Georgia sunsets. | VM

Taylor & Judson George
WHEN THE WORLD STOPPED, THEY FELL IN LOVE THEY DATED THROUGH A PANDEMIC — THE PERFECT TIME TO GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER
arried only four months ago, Judson and Taylor George are one of Valdosta’s newest married couples. They met on the very first day of their post graduate program at the University of St. Augustine. They were in the same cohort in the Fall of 2019 of their two-year Occupational Therapy program. The second week of school, a few of the guys, Jud recalls, asked a few of the ladies if they could join their study group. Taylor was one of the women in the study group. They all became fast friends and spent lots of time studying as a team.
When COVID hit in early 2020 their schooling went online. Both Jud and Taylor stayed in St. Augustine. “What better place to go through a pandemic?” Jud remembers. They talked from January to July, cooking together, studying together, playing tennis on weekends, and enjoying the

beach. It was the perfect opportunity for them to get to know each other, uninterrupted.
Taylor’s specialty is pediatric occupational therapy. When they graduated in August of 2021, she took a job with Jud’s father, Frank at his pediatric clinic. Originally from Ocilla, Taylor studied public health at Georgia College before deciding on occupational therapy. She loves what she does, seeing patients as young as newborn and up to 21. She helps patients with developmental delays that can be found in children with autism or those born with Down's Syndrome and similar issues. Taylor helps kids with cognitive tasks, play therapy, social skills, and sensory integration to increase their independence with activities of daily living. These tasks vary depending on the age of her patient and the needs that they have. One particular activity she enjoys is taking her older, more advanced patients out into the community to order a coffee or snack to help them with their psycho-social skills.
“The big word is function, I help them to achieve that, and for kids, that can be learning it for the first time.” Taylor explains that her goal is always to help her patients and to set them up for success.
As much as Taylor and Jud love each other and enjoy the work they do, they do not work together. Jud works for SGMC. He practices in the acute care setting. As an occupational therapist, Jud typically evaluates a patient within their first few days in the hospital, whether that’s for trauma like a car wreck, a stroke, amputation, generalized debility or any sort of failure to thrive. Jud comes to see the patients on every floor — neurology, surgery, COVID, and cardiac.
Jud and Taylor stay very busy with their careers and patients, so when it’s time to relax they spend their down time together. Perhaps it was their pandemic dating, but the couple is used to togetherness and really prize their time. They also joke that their home is tiny and there
is nowhere for them to hide. Jud says, “It’s been great for communication because we can’t fight or stay mad; everything is out in the open and shared between the two of us.”
In December of 2021, Jud proposed to Taylor in the beautiful pecan groves of Taylor’s family orchard in Ocilla. They married at High Grove in October of 2022, surrounded by family and friends in what Taylor described as a traditional and classic affair. The best decision they made was to hire a wedding planner. Hers was John Gandy out of Tallahassee. He handled every detail, which, while working full time, was exactly what the busy couple needed. Taylor is quick to mention that another brilliant decision they made was leaving their honeymoon planning to a professional as well. They used travel agent Holly Elrod of HDE Destinations to plan their Barbados trip. Jud said, “The pool at the Curacao resort collapsed a month before our trip and she fixed it all. She found us a new place to stay. It was a problem that we would not have known how to fix. We didn’t have to, she solved the problem.”
The pastor from Taylor’s home church presided at their wedding and led the couple in their marriage counseling. Taylor said, “He asked us questions that facilitated discussion about love languages and how those help each other. We discussed interactions and goals, and our expectations for each other and how we will keep each other accountable. He provoked great analysis and the sessions helped us grow as a couple. I would encourage couples considering marriage to seek counseling, but I also think the right fit is crucial.”
Jud’s advice to newlyweds is to strive to love like God loves us. “God loves us unconditionally. Try for that with the understanding that we will fall short, but be intentional and genuine.” | VM

AS THEY CELEBRATE 20 YEARS TOGETHER, THEY REFLECT ON WHAT HAS GIVEN THEM STRENGTH IN THEIR MARRIAGE
Their relationship started with humor, and 20 years later, despite the slings and arrows of aging, humor weaves its way through every day Cheryl and Jack have together.
Cheryl, born and raised in Quitman, was a widow when she met Jack. He lived across the lake and several friends had poked and prodded and tried to get them together.
Cheryl remembers saying, “If he wants to meet me, he’ll have to call me. Nice girls don't call boys,” adding, “My mother was still alive in Quitman and she would’ve frowned on that move.”
Jack did call. He needed to discuss the fish issue on the lake, something all the homeowners were debating, and she remembers him asking if she’d like to go to lunch to talk about it.
It was a Ruby Tuesday lunch and they laughed through the whole meal. Afterwards, they had fun playing a trick on his business partner and that set the foundation for a relationship based on happiness, and lots of laughing.
Cheryl and Jack spent five years teaching each other different pursuits. Jack taught Cheryl how to handle her boat, and together they enjoyed fishing. Cheryl was an avid tennis player so Jack took it up to play with her. Jack was a

scratch golfer, born with a golf club in his hand. He played for UGA and won the SEC in 1963, so while Cheryl enjoyed going out on the course with him, and riding in the cart, she says playing golf with him was rather intimidating and pretty much out of the question.
The couple married in 2003 on Thanksgiving, surrounded by their families at the Lake Park United Methodist Chapel. Cheryl especially recalls the beautiful music that day. Her siblings played guitar and sang. Her son Hal wrote a song and sang it accompanied by his guitar.
In keeping with the ever-present undercurrent of laughter in their relationship, Cheryl will always remember when the chapel doors opened, instead of the CD of love songs that was supposed to be playing, Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” blared out. They think she might be the only bride in history to walk down the aisle to that one.
The reception was at their home and was a traditional Thanksgiving feast. As they were leaving for their weekend away, her son Hal ran to grab some rice from the pantry to throw at the departing couple. He threw it into the car, lest they skip that good luck tradition, as they were pulling off. Cheryl said, “About that time, our eyes started to burn. It was Zatarain’s Cajun Rice. Jack did everything he could to get that smell out of the car. It was so strong, he sold it the next week.”
Cheryl loves to travel. Jack is a homebody. When asked about traveling, Jack said, “I was stationed in Germany in the Army for four years after UGA. I was what’s called an Obligated Volunteer. I had enough travel with the military.” Cheryl said, “Jack clipped my wings, but only because I don’t want to go without him. I’d rather stay right here with him, unless it’s a girls’ trip, of course.”
The two complement each other. Cheryl does the talking for the both of them. She is the social butterfly. Jack prefers to sit and listen. His favorite man to quote is Churchill, and his favorite saying of his is: “This world is fraught with missed opportunities to keep your mouth shut.”
Both Jack’s sons, Jackie, married to Mary, and Maxwell, married to Rumie, have keen senses of humor. They live in Philadelphia and Atlanta, respectively, restricting the sharing of that humor to electronic means for the most part.
In their early years of life together, Jack and Cheryl used to launch their pontoon boat, The Minnow, on pretty evenings, and collect the neighbors for a twilight cocktail cruise. Cheryl laments that although they love to entertain they do it less often these days. It’s become quite a bit of work. Cheryl and Jack are enjoying retirement. Jack sold his Remax business five years ago, although he keeps his license current and still sends referrals to his colleagues, because after 44 active years in real estate he’s not ready to stop completely.
Cheryl is retired from the Turner Center for the Arts, where she was the Executive Director for 10 years. It’s a job she profoundly loved, but the hours were long and each day she never really stopped thinking about the center. She is happy to support the center as a volunteer these days. She and Jack make every effort to attend Turner Center events and she is proud that the Hal & Jill Project continues to thrive at the center. Cheryl says that her two children, Hal and Jill, live in heaven. They are memorialized with the Hal & Jill Project, which teaches local children to play stringed instruments. Coming soon, they will be adding drumming to the offerings. “When I put out the call for donations of guitars and other stringed instruments at the beginning of the project, we couldn’t walk in our offices, there were so many donations. The response was deeply gratifying.”
As Cheryl and Jack celebrate 20 years in 2023, they reflect on what has given them strength in their marriage. “We started out with humor as our mainstay and we built upon our faith and mutual respect for each other. We love our families and we have stayed close with our children, grandchildren, and all of the extended members of our families.”
When Jack and Cheryl aren’t enjoying the lake or the Turner Center, they can be found in Hiawassee. “I’m a mountain girl, just like my dad. We have always loved the mountains.”
They love to quote Yogi Berra and enjoyed reading a book of his sayings to each other. They’d each read a chapter every night before bed and crack each other up. Jack said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Cheryl followed up with, “The future ain’t what it used to be.”
During her prior employment with Kids’ Chance, a non-profit organization that gave scholarships to children whose parents had been killed or injured in workplace accidents, Cheryl went sightseeing while at a conference in North Georgia, hoping to spot a well-advertised Frog Pond. She never found it, but she did find a lovely cabin on Frog Pond Rd. She and Jack try to get up there several times a year, and consider it their spiritual retreat. “Here, we live five miles from the Florida line; there, we are five miles from the North Carolina line. We go as far as we can, but still stay in Georgia. Life is good because God is good!” | VM

TIPS FOR NEWLY MARRIED HOUSEHUNTERS
HOME ADVICE
Article by TOM CALL
While both getting married and buying a new home can be very stressful, with some careful planning and the right mindset you can do both and begin your new life in a new home that is your very own. We've put together a guide for how to decide if homebuying as newlyweds is right for you, and if so, what you'll need to know to begin married life in your dream house.
WHAT DO THE NEXT FEW YEARS LOOK LIKE?
This is the time to evaluate any other major life transitions on the horizon such as making a career change that may include a move. To see a return on your investment, you need to own the home long enough for it to appreciate in value. If you know you might move in the next few years then now is the time to rent, not buy.
HOW IS YOUR CREDIT?
Do both of your credit scores put you in the right position for buying? If not, you may want to spend a couple of years cleaning up your credit to obtain the most favorable mortgage.
CAN YOU AFFORD THIS EXPENSE?
The biggest expense that comes with buying a home is usually the down payment. Have you saved enough to purchase the home you want? Additional costs are property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and an emergency fund. Look carefully at your budget to determine if you should work on saving more before making this big commitment.
ADVICE ON A HOME LOAN
Married couples may be eligible for a larger loan by combining their two incomes. But the downside is that the bank will take the lower-scored person's credit into account, and this could seriously affect both the size of the loan and the mortgage rates for which you qualify.
HOW TO SEARCH FOR THE RIGHT HOME
For many couples, this will be their first homebuying experience, and it can be nerve-racking. And while there are advantages to going through this experience as a couple, there are also downsides. Here is some advice for newlyweds buying a home.
THE SEARCH BEGINS BEFORE YOU START LOOKING
It’s important to define what you are looking for before you begin looking. Make separate lists of your priorities. Then combine lists, working together to prioritize what is most important to both of you. Now is the time to have an in-depth discussion with your partner about how each of you envisions your new home.
KEEP A CLEAR HEAD
Choosing a new home is an extremely emotional experience. It is critical that you approach this from a place of rational decision-
making. It is easy to fall in love with a house, but if it doesn't meet your budget requirements and your other priorities then it's not the right house for you. It's also important to keep an open mind. Sometimes a house doesn't emotionally move you, but if it checks all the boxes, it could be the right fit.
PRACTICE COMPROMISE
A big part of getting married is making compromises, and now is the time to put that into effect. You might believe that a certain house is the perfect one, but if your spouse hates it, then there is no way it is ever going to be right for you as a couple. Make a pact with your partner: if a house isn't right for both of you, it's not right for either of you.
GETTING
MARRIED AND BUYING A HOUSE AT THE SAME TIME
That's a lot on the plate for anyone and there are some big drawbacks, the most obvious ones being time and money, but plenty of people do both at once. Here are some tips:
GET A HEAD START:
Weddings and purchasing a home both take a lot of planning. And finding the right home, and then going through the loan process and closing can take time. It's impossible to know exactly how long until you find the right house. If you have your heart set on returning to a new home on your wedding day, then the earlier you get started the better.
DO YOUR RESEARCH:
This includes both before and after you've found your new potential home. It's critical that you explore your homebuying options from every angle, from considering school districts to the current housing market. Once you believe you've found a potential home, you'll need to start the research process again, to make sure that this is the right one and will be for years to come.
WORK WITH PROFESSIONALS:
A great real estate agent is key that can provide guidance on the journey and even serve as mediators for the times when you disagree as to which is the right house and help keep you focused on your priorities.
GET PRE-APPROVED:
One of the most helpful things you can do is getting preapproved for a loan. This will help you understand how much you can afford.
DON’T RUSH:
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to take your time. While it may have been your dream to start your married life in your new home, that dream is not worth the cost of getting stuck for years in the wrong one.

YOUR GUIDE TO VALDOSTA’S PEOPLE, PLACES AND BUSINESSES
A Life that Revolves AroundMusic
Valdosta Magazine contributor Cheryl Oliver met with Issa Young after his performance at the Turner Center's "American Soundtrack" event this past August.
Deeply impressed by his love for music, his journey, and his dedication to spreading the beauty of music, we wanted to share his unique story.

this page would be reverberating. Issa Young is one of our community’s most resonant voices. Those who heard Issa sing “Ol’ Man River” at the Turner Center’s “American Soundtrack” last August know what I mean. His deep bass voice emanates from the very depth of his soul.
Issa’s life revolves around music. The Choral Director at Pine Grove Middle School and Choir Master at Christ Episcopal Church, he has a mastery of multiple musical instruments that started at an early age. Discovering his voice came much later, thanks to the insight of an encouraging college professor.
Read on to learn more about this remarkable singer and musician in his own words.
VM: Tell us what brought you to Valdosta and about your educational path.
Young: I moved to Valdosta in 2009 from Albany, Georgia, to attend VSU. While there, I earned my BA in Vocal Music, MMP in Vocal Performance, and MAT in Choral Education. I’m working on my Education Specialist degree from Piedmont University. I plan to earn a Doctorate in Vocal Pedagogy and teach at the collegiate level.
VM: What sparked your interest in music?
Young: When I was around age 3, Dad created the Young Nubian Band, consisting of my four siblings. I joined when I was 4 or 5. My father, a doctor in Albany, Georgia, was invited to Nigeria with one of his friends to lecture on AIDS, and he soaked up the culture. With a new love for that culture, Dad wanted to share it with our community. Although we were born in America, he wanted us to connect to our roots and express our heritage musically. We wore hand-made West African attire and sang West African songs while playing traditional instruments. It stayed with me because I found music to be an emotional outlet.
VM: Do you incorporate African-origin music in your teaching?
Young: Where most children learn music from Western sources, I was fortunate to discover music uniquely connecting me to my heritage. Also,
singing and playing improvised songs without sheet music trained my ear and helped me understand music.
I am an African-American who learned African songs from my father, so my idea of African culture and music is second-hand. That isn’t to say that I won’t incorporate what I learned into my teaching. If we’re learning a
song of African origin, it will make the experience more authentic.
VM: Who are the most significant influences on your music?
Young: I started VSU as a piano major in 2009 but changed my major to voice after my collegiate voice teacher, Dr. David Johnson, took an interest in me. My first musical influence, besides my father, was Ms. Sybil Thomas. She always found a way to connect music education with intrinsic learning. My piano teacher, Mr. Richard Miller, probably had the most significant impact during my grade school years. He taught me the basics of music theory, encouraged my composition and creativity, and pushed me to be my own pianist.
When it comes to teaching, however, I base my style on my middle school band teacher, Ms. Eartha Watkins, and my collegiate vocal teacher, Dr. David Johnson. Ms. Watkins’ level of respect and passion for music was always inspiring. Dr.

MUSIC / ISSA YOUNG
Young: I was born in 1990, and most of my earliest musical memories are African music and children’s songs. But we had many different genres in the house. My mother and father played soul and ’80s music. My sister always played the top 40 hits. One brother listened to heavy metal and rock. Another alternative music. My youngest brother listened to the same music that I listened to, but he loved video game music.
Johnson was the inspirational force I needed during my early college years, and he’s why I’m a choir teacher today.
VM: How, specifically, did Dr. Johnson help you develop your abilities?
Young: Dr. Johnson, or “Doc” as I affectionately call him, was the first person who saw the potential in my voice. Before I met him, I never really sang out or liked my voice because I constantly compared myself to all of the professional and trained singers of old. However, Doc took an interest in me and helped define my bass-baritone voice and overall character as a student and a person. He turned an instrument I let gather dust into the voice I use today.
VM: Tell us a bit about your family here in Valdosta.
Young: I met my wife, Carmella, while at VSU. She has an incredible musical journey of her own. At age 15, she taught herself to play guitar and later took lessons. She played at the Apollo
Theater’s Amateur Night in 2005 and 2006 and won first place twice. Before joining the Navy, she played on Good Day New York and occasionally in college. She still plays guitar as a hobby and takes lessons weekly to keep her skills sharp. We have a 3-year-old daughter named Sophia.
VM: How do you intend to nurture the love of music in your daughter?
Young: Sophia has many musical influences in our home. She has a toddler piano and guitar, plays on our upright piano, sings songs around the house, and loves music that reminds me of my own. We want her to make her own choices regarding her life goals. Still, we plan on teaching her to sing, play piano, guitar, or whatever instrument she can get her hands on, and be a great all-around musician as early as possible.
VM: Your own interest in music is quite diverse. In your leisure time, what are you most likely to listen to?
Throughout my middle and high school years, I listened to adult contemporary and soft rock music. I later fell in love with Japanese culture. I started listening to J-pop, J-Rock, and Japanese City Pop, and I still do today. I also listen to a lot of soft rock, ’80s synthpop/rock, and later music of the 2000 and early 2010 decades. My home is filled with music from different cultures, eras, and genres, so I always find differences and similarities in the various types of music and train my ear to create my own down the road.
VM: What are your most significant accomplishments and goals?
Young: Even though I sang in the YNB, I never sang in the choir in middle or high school because it wasn’t seen as appropriate for adolescent boys. As a male choir teacher, I want to help break that stigma. There are so many amazing things happening vocally for children during their teenage years, and it’s sad to see talents go unnurtured due to decades-old gender roles associated with males and singing.
My biggest accomplishment, however, is being a music teacher. I love singing and music, and I’m always excited to share that love with my students daily. My goals are simple: to be the best teacher I can be for my students. I want my students to love music and singing because they want to, not because I told them it was for a grade. | VM

HISTORIC CLUB TEEING IT UP FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS
Valdosta Country Club full golf course renovation is underway
The Valdosta Country Club golf course was carved out of South Georgia woodlands that once encompassed the Cherokee Plantation during the Civil War. The VCC’s courses have undergone overhauls through the decades, with the most recent update in 1997. However, 25 years of wear and tear were beginning to show. The 2023 renovation encompasses all aspects of the course, from irrigation and cart paths, to bunkers and greens, for a heightened golf experience from tee to green.
“As a long time VCC member and golfer, our golf course needed an upgrade,” explains Drew Respess. “And it is getting a major one. It’s going to be a solid, but fun, test for the really good players ... and golfers who are new to the game. I couldn’t be more excited!”
Golf course architect Bill Bergin was selected to redesign the storied course. The project concept features an 18-hole course, sixhole par-3 short course, full short game area and practice range.
“The renovation of Valdosta Country Club is going very well. Duininck has a terrific team in place, and they are doing an excellent job. If you can ever actually claim it – we are ahead of schedule,” says Bergin. “More importantly, the quality of the transformation becomes more evident with each visit. The raw material we have to work with was well hidden but is emerging with each sweeping movement of the dozers. Exposing space and building features that work with the land has been our targeted goal from the beginning and is now
visible throughout the back nine. I truly believe the golf course will exceed all expectations, including my own.”
Greens complexes will have a dramatically different feel as they have been expanded to include deep bunkering and catch basins in the surrounding areas. Tree removal and under brushing will also improve air flow as well as create a more open look.
VCC board member Greg Hunter says “The Valdosta Country Club has been a staple in our community for over 100 years and has provided the community with a place to gather socially, to forge long-term relationships. The investment from our membership to revitalize the golf course, tennis courts, and other facilities of the club will restore the VCC as the preeminent private golf course in South Georgia.”
In addition to golf, the Valdosta Country Club offers tennis, including the only clay courts in the region, a state-of-the-art fitness center with personal training, and a shortcourse Olympic size pool and snack bar. Continued improvements are what attracts not only golfers, but families and businesspeople to the Club. The VCC looks forward to opening the new golf course this fall! | VM
“The investment from our membership to revitalize the golf course will restore the VCC as the preeminent private golf course in South Georgia.”
The ceremonial groundbreaking was in December 2022. The new course, expected to be completed by Fall 2023, will include:
• A new 18-hole course is being reworked from the existing 27 holes
• Expanded driving range and practice facilities
• All greens, fairways, bunkers, and cart paths are being rebuilt
• A short course will be added between the first hole and the practice facilities

Farmers of the Year Named at Farmer Appreciation Breakfast Hosted by Lowndes County and Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber
Agriculture is Georgia’s number one industry and on Thursday, December
8, the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners and the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce held a local farmer appreciation breakfast and presented the 2022 Farmer of the Year awards, recognizing a large and small farmer from Lowndes or Echols counties. David Corbett, South Georgia Produce, was named Large Farmer of the Year while Janet and Steve Hendley, Fifth Day Farm, were named Small Farmer of the Year.
Alongside his sisters, David Corbett, owner of South Georgia Produce, began working on the family farm with his parents at an early age. After college and a profession outside of farming, Corbett began farming full-time and started South Georgia Produce in 1993, supplying fresh produce to U.S. markets including summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, bell pepper, specialty peppers, cucumbers, and cabbage. All three of his children
have worked in various capacities within the farm and are still actively involved today. In fact, his son and son-in-law formed Ty-Cor Farms, LLC several years ago, growing top-notch, good-quality produce that supplies South Georgia Produce.
Fifth Day Farm started in 2017 as a backyard hobby and has blossomed into a popular agritourism family destination for Lowndes County and visitors alike. The Small Farmer of the

Fifth Day Farm has tremendously impacted students from Lowndes and surrounding counties, teaching them about farms, farm animals, and agriculture in general.
“Lowndes and Echols Counties have a rich tradition of being large farming communities and providing an abundant supply of food and fiber to not only our community and state but all around the world,” said Bill Slaughter, Lowndes County Board of Commission Chairman. “The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners are proud to recognize our farmers and show appreciation to them.”
The agriculture industry represents more than $338.7 million in annual farm gate value within Lowndes and Echols counties.
The program focused on highlighting the impact of agriculture on Lowndes County and our region, as well as expressing gratitude for all the farmers and producers in the room. The keynote speaker was Arthur Tripp, who serves as the State Executive Director of the USDA Farm Service Agency. He focused on ensuring that farmers were aware of all the opportunities that are available for support. He also asked attendees
to think about the future of farming and to find ways to encourage younger generations to become active in agriculture.
Over 65 nominations were received for large and small farmers of the year, with some farmers receiving multiple nominations.
“Agriculture plays a tremendous role in our local economy and our daily lives. The Chamber was thrilled to partner with Lowndes County and Georgia Grown to honor our local growers and producers. This event would not have been made possible without the support of our sponsors who recognize the importance of local agriculture — CJB Applied Technologies and Cecil W. Powell Insurance Company. Healthcare Expanding Access to
Patients in Lowndes County and the surrounding areas now have another hospital available for their healthcare needs.
South Georgia Medical Center commemorated the grand re-opening of its SGMC Smith Northview hospital in early December 2022 with a special ribbon cutting ceremony.
SGMC leadership welcomed community leaders, state and local legislators, physicians, and staff to recognize the significant role that the hospital and campus play in access to quality healthcare for the region.
In mid-December, SGMC Urgent Care relocated from its position within the hospital to another building on the SGMC Smith Northview Campus to provide more visibility and convenient access for patients.
In January 2023, SGMC fully re-opened the Smith Northview hospital, featuring a 12-bed emergency room with 24/7 coverage from emergencymedicine board-certified and residency-trained physicians. In addition, the hospital houses 45 acute inpatient care beds.
According to SGMC Emergency Department Medical Director Dr. Clark Connell, the hospital re-opening could not have come at a better time as hospitals across the state have seen a steady increase in patients.

“The foresight of SGMC’s leadership team and our elected officials to identify the need to expand access to healthcare in our area and their dedication to see the project through is commendable,” said Connell. “It was no small feat, and our team looks forward to providing more choices for high-quality healthcare to those in our region.”
According to Ronald E. Dean, SGMC President and Chief Executive Officer, creating unequaled access is a top priority for the health system because convenience and capability matter.
“SGMC Smith Northview significantly enhances access to our remarkable team of 600-plus providers and the most comprehensive healthcare system in the region,” shared Dean.
Furthermore, patients who receive care at any SGMC location or facility receive access to their own MyChart account and application (commonly referred to as an Electronic Health Record) that allows for a centralized record of their information that integrates seamlessly with all care provided to them across the health system.
In addition to inpatient and emergency services, the Smith Northview Campus offers specialty services such as a walk-in lab, outpatient imaging, outpatient surgery, a diagnostic sleep center, a neurology clinic, and the aforementioned urgent care. | VM

A Girl’s Best iend
Navigating through life’s obstacles can become insurmountable at times — even more so if you are a teenage girl trying to figure out your direction in life. Cambree Lucas is only 14 years old and a freshman at Lowndes High School, but clearly she is already establishing her path and making a strong statement about her faith in the process.
Cambree, an avid reader, recently discovered author Grace Valentine on Instagram. She received her first Grace Valentine book on Easter from her parents. Since then, Valentine has become one of Cambree’s favorite authors. Grace has written three books, Am I Enough?, Is it Just Me?, What Will They Think? and her fourth book, To the Girl Looking For More, will be out in April. Raised in Louisiana, and a graduate of Baylor University, Grace currently lives in Orlando, Florida. She is a young, vibrant Christian author, blogger, podcast host, and speaker who loves God and has a heart for young girls and the struggles they face every day. Her readers love that she is young, vivacious, and real. “I like to write about Jesus, my mistakes, what I’ve learned, and I dream of a world where no girl cries because she doesn’t feel good enough,” Grace explains.
Grace is not only an author, but she is also a mentor and a special friend to so many young

girls like Cambree, who has read all of Grace’s books, and her mini-books that she posts online. “Grace’s books are so relatable and a perfect fit for high schoolers like me,” Cambree said. “She is the friend every young girl needs.”
Well, that could have been the extent of their encounter, but Cambree was bold and faithful. A few months back, she messaged Grace on Instagram and asked her to come speak to her cheer team in Valdosta. Grace and Cambree communicated back and forth until they agreed upon a date when Grace would already be in Valdosta for another scheduled event. Cambree was so excited Grace could come! She immediately began planning the event, with help from her mom, Jenna.
Cambree invited some of her closest friends who were also fans of Grace to a luncheon at Oak Line Farms on Saturday, February 4, to meet Grace. Twelve girls were able to attend, along with a few moms — Casey Langdale and Whitney Robinson, LHS varsity cheerleader coach. Grace brought her grandmother, Myra Shiver Valentine, who is a former Hahira cheerleader.
After lunch, Grace sat down with the girls for an intimate discussion. The girls were given an opportunity to talk about their lives, their struggles, and their fears freely. Cambree said, “Grace showed genuine interest in our lives, and she related her advice to the Bible and to the people in the Biblical stories. She showed so much compassion for the struggles we face. God moved in so many ways that day, and He created lots of new friendships and memories we will cherish forever.”
Emma Allbritton, a junior at Lowndes High School, said, “I learned from Grace to not let the enemy get in the way and that even if something doesn’t go my way, a bad thing can become a good thing, if it becomes a God thing!”
Cambree and her friends are learning that navigating life’s treacherous path can be accomplished. Having a true relationship with God and friends like Grace makes this attainable and sustainable. The true friend every young girl needs is God and a special friend like Grace who will boldly share His truth! | VM
“We weren’t called to speak our minds, we are called to speak the Spirit. True boldness requires courage, self-control, humility, and wisdom. Boldness doesn’t require perfection, just a perfect God working out the details for His good and our good. Boldness isn’t exclusive to the loud personalities. It is given by the Holy Spirit, and it is available to all of us. I want you to forget the lie that Jesus wants quiet and one-dimensional women on His team. Throughout this book, you will see that you can be bold and gentle, purposeful, and true to your personality, humble and confident. A little messy, yet expectant and even misunderstood and forgiven. Jesus listens to women, but to walk in purpose, we must listen to Him.” – excerpt from Grace’s book, What Will They Think?

Know, Then Go: Education is Vital for Appropriate Care
You return home from grocery shopping Saturday morning, only to stumble up the stairs and find yourself with a swollen ankle. You can't put weight on it and the swelling shows signs of bruising.
You pick the children up from school, only to find out that your youngest has a sore throat and fever.
All too often, illness or injury appears out of the blue. Should you head to the emergency department or urgent care?
Knowing where to seek medical care makes a big difference. While the answer is not always simple, understanding the basics can help you save time and money, but most importantly, ensure you receive the right level of care.
According to Dr. Elizabeth Flail, co-director for South Georgia Medical Center's Emergency Department and Urgent Care Center, recognizing the difference between 'emergency' and 'urgent' care can be difficult because both terms imply a medical need that needs to be addressed quickly.
"There are distinct differences between the level of care provided at hospital emergency departments and urgent care facilities," says Dr. Flail. "Our ERs are equipped to handle the most complex or critical medical needs, which include life and limb threatening situations ranging from a heart attack and stroke to traumatic injuries following an accident."
For non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, Dr. Flail shares that there are a few reasons your primary care physician (PCP) should be your first call.
"Your PCP knows you and your health history, including what medications you take and any chronic conditions that should be considered in your treatment," says Dr. Flail.
However, if you don't have an established PCP
or if your PCP is unavailable, an Urgent Care center may be your next best choice as they typically accept walk-in patients and are open after-hours and on weekends.
"Urgent Care is the middle ground between a PCP and the ER. If you have a minor illness or injury that just can't wait until a regular appointment, Urgent Care fills that gap."
Urgent care centers generally have shorter wait times compared to an ER, and in most cases, the out-of-pocket cost is also lower. However, it's always a good idea to check to see what is covered by your insurance plan.
A good rule of thumb: if your sudden illness or injury is something you would normally feel comfortable addressing with your PCP, then an urgent care setting is probably more appropriate than the ER. | VM
SGMC offers the entire continuum of care, including 12 primary care offices, four emergency departments, and an urgent care center. For more information, visit sgmc.org

Walter Hobbs The Potter
Walter Hobbs has quite a resumé, and at the top of it is the title, “Walter Hobbs – The Potter.” A prolific professional potter for over 50 years, Hobbs is well-known for throwing a variety of creative, eclectic pottery. Hobbs first specialized in functional pieces like dishware, including coffee mugs which remain extremely popular. In fact, in a recent downtown Valdosta collaboration with Gūd Coffee called “Mugged in Benny’s Alley,” Hobbs sold over 200 mugs in six hours.

One important thing to know about Hobbs, though, is that he has never been content with the mastery of one form or style. He’s continually evolving new ways to express himself in clay. He says that it’s important artistically for him to push himself. “Whether it be forms, glazes, firing processes, textures, or uses, I find that challenging myself is rewarding,” Hobbs observes. His modern pieces feature artistic and sculptural styles.
Hobbs grew up in Cordele, Georgia, then came to Valdosta State University. It was during his sophomore year at VSU that he took his first pottery class. Originally intending to study architecture, he decided to pursue pottery. After
earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts, he accepted an invitation to be a graduate assistant teaching ceramics at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. When he returned to Valdosta, he began teaching art in middle school and earned his Master of Fine Arts Education. He has also been an art instructor at VSU and Troy State University. Having taught thousands of students, including as artist-in-residence at The Turner Center for the Arts and at the Glynn Art Association, he still gets calls from would-be apprentices.
Officially retired, Hobbs might be working harder than ever. A teacher and a learner, Hobbs enjoys every aspect of pottery, even building

his own kilns brick by brick. He has several at his home, from small to huge. On cool evenings, he can cast a giant glow as he fires raku pieces, which are removed while red-hot and deliberately cooled quickly in sawdust. Raku pottery tradition has its origins in 16th-century Japan. What began as ceremonial tea bowls has evolved over the centuries, and in Hobbs’s back yard, it continues dynamically. He speaks enthusiastically of the chemical processes involved in taking a glaze to a luster, tampering with the damper to control the heat. Not surprisingly, he laughs that he has an electric kiln he never uses, because – after all – electric kilns are so predictable. And predictable is not fun.
What Hobbs relishes are the “happy accidents” that come by experimenting with pottery’s elements of earth, fire, air, and water. No two works are exactly alike; it’s the unique qualities that make them beautiful. A partner in Artists on Ashley downtown, he has a wide variety of stoneware and raku on display there, as well as in numerous permanent collections. His pieces have been juried into prestigious exhibits all over the south and his list of awards is long. In the future, he plans to continue entering shows and placing his works in more galleries.

PEACH STATE SUMMERTheatre
The Peach State Summer Theatre (PSST) is a statewide program housed in the College of Fine Arts Department at Valdosta State University. Peach State started in 1990 as an amphitheater in Jekyll Island before its relocation to Valdosta State University. In 2006, PSST was named the Official Theatre of Georgia, with this being their 34th year of performances.
PSST held local auditions at the end of January for their upcoming musicals, Mahalia A Gospel Musical, The SpongeBob Musical, and Monty Python’s Spamalot to fill over
60 positions for the summer performances. Auditionees included locals and VSU students, as well as performers from all over the U.S. PSST has welcomed performers from California, New York, Miami, and Atlanta, with even some from Las Vegas coming out to the 2022 auditions. Hank Rion, Artistic Director for PSST, noted that the auditions and rehearsals are “a fast process, and the actors and technical staff participate in all three shows.” He also commented that after auditions, the casting of roles is the longest process. The Box Office opens when rehearsals start around mid-May. Peach State’s

first shows of the summer generally premiere in June, and the company usually sees up to 6000 attendees per season.
The audition process is a fun and entertaining experience for the actors and casting directors. The type of talent required depends on which shows Peach State is casting for. In the summer of 2022, PSST casting crew looked for more contemporary dancers and waltz styles due to the musicals of that season (Cinderella and Ain’t Misbehavin’). At the auditions held in January, they looked for tap dancers to contribute to the tap routines for the upcoming musicals. Rion wanted to expand the company's existing dance styles with the inclusion of tap-dancing, which had not been featured in recent Peach State shows. Overall, the casting crew looks for professionality, good company, originality, creative style, and performers with good energy.
Director Hank Rion completed his undergrad at Valdosta State University and participated in the 2nd acting company of the Peach State
Summer Theatre in Jekyll Island, 1991. Rion went on to direct professionally and took over his mentor’s spot as the director of the PSST. Hank Rion’s overall goal is to “reach different generations to encourage more people to come out to the Theatre.”
Rion works hard to reach all generations of the audience, and so far, he has been successful. The plans for the upcoming musical Mahalia include having a chorus, congregation, choirs, etc. come out and sing for the finale.
“The best thing about Peach State Summer Theatre is that you can come to Valdosta and see all three shows in two days because we perform in rotating repertory,” Rion stated. “A lot of the people PSST work with continue to come back because it is fun and a great experience.”

TWO HEARTWARMING MODERN NOVELS:
Times bestseller last summer, it was a “Read with Jenna” selection.
Marcellus, the octopus, narrates his own point of view in the opening chapters and throughout, and it’s his voice more than the others’ that captivates. He lives in a small public aquarium in a fictional small town near Puget Sound.
REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES
by Shelby Van Pelt (2022)
Ahardworking widow, a down-onhis-luck loner, a Scottish grocer, and a brilliant Giant Pacific Octopus comprise the unlikely, but irresistibly engaging characters in Van Pelt’s debut novel. An instant New York
Tova, the widow who fastidiously cleans the aquarium nightly, forms a bond with Marcellus. She has lost her beloved husband to cancer and her only son to presumed suicide. Although she has friends her own age (the “knit wits”), it’s her connection to Marcellus that commands the heart of the narrative. The other characters are “icing on the cake.” It’s a deliciously charming novel. Treat yourself to this one.
ALL THE BROKEN PLACES
by John Boyne (2022)
Irish author Boyne revisits the characters of his 2006 novella, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, for this sequel. That one ends as the family leaves Auschwitz, where Gretel and Bruno’s father was commandant. (Broken Places is not a “holocaust novel” though, and you wouldn’t need to have read Striped Pajamas to enjoy this welltold tale. There’s a 2008 film version available on Prime if you want to watch it).
Boyne’s narrative features two storylines, alternating between the 91-year-old Gretel in present-day posh London and the teen to 20-something Gretel who flees her wartime past in the 1940s. The plot poses the question as to whether children must answer for the crimes of their parents. Boyne masters the dual plots, but doesn’t tell the reader what judgment to pass. Gretel’s neighbors in a prestigious Mayfair building form the compelling subplots and twists in the story. The two audio readers (one old, one young) do a fabulous job. Both ring as true as the best actors on screen and the 12 hours of audio fly by.

SAM
by Allegra Goodman (2023)
Narci Drossos describes herself as a compulsive reader, saved in her youth by a summer bookmobile librarian who ignored the bi-weekly limit of five books; thus, allowing her in one summer, to go from Harriet the Spy and Nancy Drew to David Copperfield and Jane Eyre. She holds three degrees from Valdosta State University and has been teaching English at Valdosta High School for over 30 years. She’s published book reviews in ELLE magazine and online on Instagram @novels_with_narci, where she’d appreciate a follow and your feedback on this VM feature using #VMbookreview.
Goodman is a graduate of Harvard and Stanford, and she writes literary fiction. This “Read with Jenna” selection has been featured in Vogue and People. The New York Times calls it “a portrait of a girl at risk that shimmers with an unusual intimacy and depth.” The eponymous character Sam comes of age in blue collar Massachusetts, far removed from its prep academies and prestigious universities.
Like her single mother’s aspirational focus, Sam is a climber – literally –she scales rocks, walls, and boulders. Figuratively, she is a climber too, yearning

THE RESEMBLANCE
by Lauren Nossett (2022)
Nossett received her Ph. D. in German literature from the University of California, Davis, and a BA and MA from The University of Georgia. Having taught college German, she now writes full time, with this as her debut. The novel’s synopsis on the inside jacket is titled with the admonition “Never Betray the Brotherhood.” A fraternity brother steps off the curb at the Lumpkin Street crosswalk on UGA’s campus and is struck dead by an oncoming vehicle, the driver of which looks just like him.
Nossett’s heroine, Marlitt Kaplan, is a police detective; she happens to be
THE VILLA
by Rachel Hawkins (2023)
Hawkins was a high school English teacher in her native Alabama before becoming a selfproclaimed “popcorn” novelist, penning light mysteries/romances like The Ex Hex under the pseudonym Erin Sterling. Her previous The Wife Upstairs under her own name presented a modern version of Jane Eyre. In The Villa, Auburn University graduate Hawkins takes on the fabled 1816 gathering of Mary Godwin Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and Jon Polidou. Literary legend has it that during their dark and stormy stay at a villa in Switzerland, the hearthside telling of horror stories led to the later publications of Polidou’s The Vampyre and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
The Washington Post hails The Villa as both “a moody labyrinth” and a “spooky,
ALL THE DANGEROUS THINGS
by Stacy Willingham (2023)
Willingham earned a BA in magazine journalism at The University of Georgia and a MFA in writing from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She was a successful copywriter and brand strategist before turning to fiction with the 2022 publication of her international bestseller A Flicker in the Dark. Now a Charleston resident, Willingham sets her newest in Savannah. A Book of the Month selection, Dangerous Things is quickly becoming a bestseller too.
In the prologue, you learn that Isabel Drake is an insomniac, stricken sleepless when her son, Mason, was stolen from his crib in her and husband Ben’s Isle of Hope home one year ago. A former feature writer for a renowned regional magazine (think Garden & Gun), Isabel had left her career at Ben’s request when she became a mother. Ben, however, did not stick around when she was unwilling to accept the idea that their son is dead. She becomes a frequent personality on the murder podcast circuit, willingly putting herself at risk to find the truth about what really happened to Mason. That mystery, and several others regarding her past, unfold in just over 300 fast-turning pages. Fans of modern crime stories will recognize the grim fascination with mothers and lost children, but ultimately, this story isn’t as dark as it might be.

MEET THE MERCHANT: JESSICA GANAS
Owner of Curate
Story by ALLEN ALLNOCH
Downtown Valdosta these days is a vibrant scene for shopping, entertainment, and dining. Jessica Ganas has been a committed participant in that scene, and her latest venture is making downtown an even more colorful place to be.
In 2022 Jessica opened Curate, a collective space at 134 North Patterson Street featuring an art gallery and vintage retail items. Curate follows a trio of other downtown businesses she’s opened over the past 14 years: Bennie’s Gallery (2009), Red Door Records (2010), and Cinema Downtown (2015).
“Downtown is transforming, with many historical buildings being restored,” Jessica says. “The McKey Building is being remodeled into an event space and boutique hotel. The historic courthouse renovation should be completed in the spring. I have witnessed incredible revitalization efforts over the last decade and a half. It has been truly rewarding to see downtown transform and receive the appreciation it is due. I am excited to be a part of the progress and I can’t wait to share what we do downtown with the public.”
Curate offers a gallery of original art by six talented area artists, as well as a wide variety of vintage collectibles and furniture curated by 10 vintage vendors. Ganas hosts art events on the first Friday of each month, plus regular gallery openings, live bands, artist pop-ups, and artist talks.
Ganas’ own work and interests are reflected at Curate, including her love of music. “As one

of the vendors in our collective, my specialty is vintage vinyl,” she says. “I love discovering records for my clientele of record collectors. My love of vintage collectibles also led me to create the Boozy Flea, a vintage vendor market which takes place monthly at the Georgia Beer Company.”
Jessica’s vision is to further establish downtown Valdosta as the arts district, and to expand opportunities for artists to exhibit. To that end, Curate has partnered with Sublime, GUD Coffee, and The Southern Cellar, all of which now display and sell local original art.
“I enjoy art and feel that it unites and shapes the cultural climate of a community, challenging the status quo and boosting economic growth,” says Jessica, who is a board member with
the Valdosta Heritage Foundation, a member of the Leadership Lowndes Class of 2023, and a VSU Alumni board member. “Being downtown creates the perfect setting, allowing me to meet others who feel the same. I enjoy meeting people new to our area and helping them discover more about downtown and Valdosta.”
Jessica clearly has a passion for downtown Valdosta, and the area is blessed to have her there.
“Through opening my retail shop, I hope to encourage more businesses to come downtown to build a stronger community,” she says. “Downtown Valdosta will always be dear to me because it is where I met the most important people in my life, including my husband and closest friends.” | VM

The film crew (above) was made up of high school students from Brooks and Lowndes County. Shot in Quitman, “The Buick Special” is one of the films that will be headlining the festival opening.

DID YOU KNOW?
The city of Valdosta is often called the Azalea City. Many azalea bushes are concentrated in Drexel park, which is named after Richard J. Drexel. Mr. Drexel, a native of Indiana, went to work for the city of Valdosta as, according to the Valdosta Daily Times, “the city parks everything – laborer, foreman, designer and supervisor.” In 1925, he began planting azaleas on public property and private land throughout the city. He planted hundreds, expanding to the college campus, Sunset Hill cemetery, and along Patterson Street.
