Bay Street Theater’s 2014 Mainstage Season begins with the World Premiere of Conviction, a modern drama, from May 27- June 15.The play is written by Carey Crim and directed by Scott Schwartz; produced in association with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Rubicon Theatre Company and Dead Posh Productions. Conviction tells the story of Tom Hodges, a charismatic, confident and caring teacher that students adore and parents admire. For the second production, Richard Kind returns to Bay Street Theatre in Travesties a Tony award-winning comedy, which runs June 24-July 20. This Tom Stoppard classic will be directed by Gregory Boyd. Stoppard creates a smashing theatrical extravaganza with the wit of Oscar Wilde crashing headlong into song-and-dance, strip-tease, pie-fights, and brilliant wordplay. The season culminates with the World Premiere of My Life AS A Musical, which runs July 29-August 31. The musical has book, music and lyrics by Adam Overett; music direction by Vadim Feichtner, and directed and choreographed by Marlo Hunter. My Life AS A Musical is about Parker, who isn’t like anyone else. When Parker wakes up in the morning and leaves his apartment, he hears people singing, he sees people dancing - and no other person on earth knows this is happening. Because Parker’s life is a musical. Special Saturday nights include Paula Poundstone on May 24, Richard Lewis on June 21 and A Divine Evening with Charles Busch accompanied by Tom Judson on July 26. After an extreme winter of seemingly endless snowstorms, arctic temperatures, and frigid wind chills, the spring thaw has finally arrived. East Hampton and Amagansett continue to be trendy with the very high end of the market coming back.” She remarks, “Both buyers and sellers are on a pretty even scale right now.” Angela reflects, “As we head into summer, both buyers and sellers will keep our sales market strong.” Mary Giaquinto at Plum Builders, Inc. notes, “The summer rental market has been consistent and strong with demand outstripping supply.” She remarks, “The most active segment of the market is $1M and below and everything of value appears to be going.” She expects,“The costs of building will continue to rise as competition for good subcontractors, building materials, interest rates, necessary green practices, and the cost of a building lot keep rising.” Mary predicts, “The market will increase in strength into the summer as the East End becomes the warm weather destination.” Mala Sander at Corcoran Group observes, “It is another great year for sales as the sales market is quite strong. The frameless glass shower door is chic, while semi-frameless glass sliding doors are cool for the bathtub. The gooseneck or rain showerhead provides a powerful body wash. When Geir Magnusson, an East Hampton producer with a pilot’s license, took a broker friend and his real estate customer on a flight over the Amagansett dunes to view a property from its aerial perspective, little did he know that the flyover would lead to marriage. “It shows clients from the air the relationship of the property to schools and shopping,” said Mr. Magnusson. In this case, it also showed the customer a new relationship entirely. “As we took off from the runway there was a group of deer, the sun was setting, and the moon was coming up,” he said. A boon for romance to be sure. And a deal-clincher too. She also bought the house. Of course not all real estate flyovers end in nuptials or even house sales. But they do work to give a customer who’s serious about a property a sense of its scale, boundaries, and who its neighbors are.

In fact, he was picking the Greenwich, CT resident up at the airport in White Plains and flying her to the South Fork for a looksee at a 14-acre property from the air before landing and showing her a ground’s eye view. One thing this potential buyer wants to know: how far is the property from the airport. She owns a plane herself. How does he lure people skyward? “A lot of time it starts out that people just want to go somewhere, say Martha’s Vineyard,” he said.They’ll ask if he an give them a ride there. Off they’ll go into the wild blue yonder, and check out a property or two en route. Robert Kittine, a broker with the Corcoran Group and a former commercial pilot also owns a four-seater. His is a Cessna 182. He will bring up that fact in conversation to test the waters. If someone is interested, about one in ten he said, he’ll take them up. “They get a

kick out of it,” he said. “There’s an awful lot of competition from other real estate agents out here. If anything can give you an edge, you try it.” Mr. Burnside agrees. “If you’d had a broker show you three houses and then he took you up in a plane, would you go to another broker? It’s about loyalty.” But a flight is not the first thing he offers a customer. “Flying is very distracting. You’re wearing headphones, talking to air traffic control, and navigating,” he said.“You can’t focus on selling a piece of real estate from the air. I try to show them when I’ve already got the deal in the bag: they’ve seen the property and area, they know the comps, and have been back a second time. The next step would be seeing it from above – if they’re brave enough.” Mr. Kittine has been known to offer a flight to Nantucket for lunch as a “closing present.”The 55-minute ride over the shimmering bays and inlets of the East End, and into the Atlantic Ocean certainly has an advantage over the usual closing goodie bag.

Q: As a Hamptons native, how has The Hamptons changed since you were a kid? A: I wish I was able to define myself as a true Hamptons native, since I have been here only since 1977. But even in that relatively short period of time, the changes have been quite profound, especially in the disappearance of all the Mom & Pop stores on Main Street, and also how crowded the place has become. Q: What do you like to do in the Hamptons ...after selling real estate of course? A: I have been an active volunteer with the Amagansett Fire Department Ambulance Squad for the past 29 years. Q: What is the most challenging aspect of being a real estate agent for you? A: Keeping up with all the changes in local and regional codes, laws, rules and regulations pertaining to all aspects of real estate including environmental, planning, zoning, building, code enforcement, etc. Q: What is the best advice you can give a 2nd homebuyer when searching for a vacation home in the Hamptons? A: First, line up the necessary financing ahead of time, even before doing any initial research for the real estate, and get a mortgage pre-qualification letter at least. It’s even better, if they can, to get a pre-approval letter. They can then find out definitively what amount they can spend in total for their dream house. The second important step after that is to find and identify the right broker – one whom you are comfortable working with. Q: As one of the more seasoned real estate agents in the Hamptons, what is it that sets you apart from the others? A: The time, energy, enthusiasm, integrity and attention to detail that I extend to each and every deal, whether it is a rental, a home or a commercial transaction, from the modest starter homes to the large estates.

Q:What is a typical day like in real estate for you? A: Each day is a different day in the life of a real estate broker. Very often, I would start the day with no firm appointments or even a to-do list, and that could turn out to be a very busy and hectic day. We have to be ready to roll with the proverbial punch every day. Q: Can you tell us about some of your more notable sales? A: One year when three friends, who had rented together for the previous few years, decided instead to purchase. Within a few weeks, I had sold them a total of four properties (they had mentioned their plans to a fourth friend), all in Amagansett, in the Dunes, and one of them was a 2-acre oceanfront home. Q: What is the most personally satisfying part of your work? A: When everything comes together in the end – at title closing - with all parties involved in the transaction walking away happy, satisfied and contented. I sincerely feel my role in the business is not as a salesman, but more of a match-maker, Q: If you had a bucket list, what would be #1 on your list? A: To have properties listed for rent or for sale at the right prices, and not grossly inflated either with (a) a built-in negotiation factor; or because (b) that is what their neighbors had gotten for their house or (c) that is the amount they require for the next house they intend to purchase.

Lighting designer Caitlin Faron is a behind-the-scenes wizard. Here, we train a beam on three dazzling works by this alchemist of light. Caitlin Faron is possibly one of the most talented lighting designers you’ve never heard of, but that’s no knock on her. While the names of celebrated architects and interior decorators and landscape designers are part of the cultural lexicon, lighting designers remain very much off-stage figures, quietly working their magic out of public view. And that’s a pity; because many of us underestimate the defining role that light plays in shaping our experience of a space. ‘Light affects everything, ’ says Faron, who founded the Southampton based Shine-Design in 2009, a practice that specializes in interior and exterior residential projects. ‘How colors look, how we perceive distance and depth, how we feel in a room, are all a function of light and the designer’s ability to bend and manipulate it.’ In many high-end houses, she observes, lighting remains an afterthought. Her best advice? Plan ahead. ‘The decorator might have an amazing chandelier, but what sort of a lighting scheme will you put in place to support that chandelier? Good lighting design should be of a piece with the form and use of the space, and for that, you need to start early.’ Here, Faron gives a guided tour of some recent dazzlers:

Amagansett kitchen. “We’ve got five different types of lighting in this kitchen and everything is switched separately so you can create different kinds of settings based on how you’re using the room. So as not to compete with a set of big vintage pendants hanging over the prep island, the lighting had to be discrete. We used LED puck lights because they’re small and unobtrusive and illuminate a work area with little spots of fantastically concentrated light, and also because they complemented the semi-industrial look of the structure. We even recessed one into the bottom of a beam over the sink.

Five-hundred-square-foot glass pavilion, Amagansett. “This is such a cool structure for entertaining,”says Faron. “Because it occupies a prominent place on the property and is visible from multiple viewing points, we installed triangular fixtures that wash light up from the ceiling, and, on top of the tie beams, a linear run of LED, giving it a real presence in the landscape.”

Converted barn, North Haven. “The idea here was to create a dialogue between the reclaimed wood trusses, the intimate core seating area with fireplace, and the outer activity areas which required more light. At each truss location, we used recessed wall washers for which I specified a custom rubbed-bronze trim that pointed up the warm tones in the wood, and installed accent lights at the roof ridge to illuminate the stone chimney, filling in with lamps in the seating area. It took a lot of fixtures and a couple of mock-ups to convince the client, but the results were effective and dramatic.”

Ah, for a quiet Sunday morning in summer. Do you yearn for your own little oasis, without the buzzing of lawnmowers, the whining of leaf blowers, the impatient honking of car horns? Most of us can’t surround ourselves with acres of woods or fields to gain privacy. But with the right landscaping we can all create our own small havens and shut out the rest of the world, at least for a while. Planting for Privacy Maybe the street is your biggest problem. Or the neighbors. Or that rental down the street. Here are some strategies for creating your own little oasis. You might not be able to shut off all the noise, but you can soften it, and keep all the cars and people out of sight. What Kind of Planting Suits Your Needs? Depending on the level of privacy you want, the architectural style of your home and property, and what features are already present in your landscape, you can create privacy with a formal hedge or an informal screen or mixed hedgerow of plants. To deter wandering animals or intruders, you might want a dense, thorny barrier screen. The high green wall of the classic privet hedge is ubiquitous on eastern Long Island, especially in the Hamptons. A tall hedge effectively blocks the view of your property from the street and from next door. It helps keep windblown sand and salt from blasting your flower gardens. A hedge also very neatly delineates property lines. In a formal setting, it works quite well. Basically a row of closely planted, carefully sheared plants (usually shrubs but sometimes trees), a formal hedge needs careful shearing several times a year to maintain its neat shape. Ideally, for longest life, a hedge should be sheared with the top narrower than the bottom, so all parts of the plants get enough light. Otherwise the bottom can become sparse as years pass. Eventually the hedge may need to be cut way back to rejuvenate it. Classic hedge plants include, of course, privet, but also arborvitae (which deer will likely graze), hollies, Leyland cypress and for a lower screen, cherry laurel or “skip” laurel (two forms of the same basic plant in the cherry family, less often attacked by deer but no longer immune as it used to be. 82

Informal Screens For a looser, more relaxed, maybe even colorful look you’ve got more options. In an informal screen the plants can assume their natural forms without a lot of fussy shearing.The look is softer and looser. Did you know that privet, when left unsheared, takes on a billowy form? It also blooms around the Fourth of July here, which may or may not be appealing. A screen of shrubs, while not a solid wall, can offer other benefits, such as flowers and easier maintenance. Many shrubs are deciduous, losing their leaves in winter, but if you don’t use your outdoor space a lot during the cold months, that might not be a big issue. Evergreen shrubs and trees, such as junipers, spruces and white pines, will be green all year. Some good candidates for informal screens include viburnums, bridal wreath spiraea, summersweet (Clethra), ninebark (Physocarpus), peegee, or panicle, hydrangeas (deer favorites in many gardens, though in my experience less likely to be attacked that the classic blue macrophylla hydrangeas), rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) and lilacs. If it’s a barrier you’re after, rugosa roses, with their thorny stems, are a good choice (though deer, perplexingly enough, love to eat them). For a spring-to-fall screen you could also plant a row of tall ornamental grasses. Just bear in mind that the plants will need to be cut back close to the ground in late fall or early spring. Whatever kind of hedge or screen you consider installing, one plant to avoid at all costs is running bamboo. Bamboos are beautiful and romantic, they sway in the breeze and deer don’t eat them. But running bamboos are impossible for homeowners to control. Unless you plant it in a pot, it will get away from you. Bamboo can pop up yards away from where you plant it. You can sink metal edging strips into the ground around it and bamboo will get underneath it and pop up on the other side. It’s insidious. The only possibly feasible solution I’ve ever heard is to drive a very sharp spade deep into the ground on either side of a stand of bamboo in fall, to sever the runners.
