A Former Carnegie Home at a Compelling Price Exclusive Representation For the art collector and connoisseur, a finely proportioned home in Southampton’s “summer cottage” community built in 1898. The restoration unified the spaces whilst opening up hallways and staircases and modernizing the interiors for today’ fast paced lifestyle. Additions to the 3-story house resulted in stunning new interiors including two home offices. And so, a home regarded by many as embodying a pedigree of elegance in its very best vein, awaits for one with an impeccable eye for all that is beautiful, young and modern in architecture both inside, and out. elcome to the Columbus Day issue of Hamptons Real Estate Showcase.

With the Labor Day holiday behind us, this is traditionally a quieter time of the year in the Hamptons. Of course, this year is very different and there was no “Tumbleweed Tuesday” to be had. Many of our seasonal renters are staying on through the winter. Quite a few of them are buying houses and making the Hamptons their primary residence. We welcome all of these new homeowners to the East End. This is a special corner of the world, so let’s all work together to preserve the wonderful quality of life that we have here.

Featured on this month’s front cover, Aleksandrina Penkova and Raphael Avigdor of Douglas Elliman Real Estate present a private 36 acre pond front estate with three waterfront homes in the heart of Sagaponack North wine and horse country. Three additional building lots of two acres each are also included in the sale, with enough room for sizable homes, pools and tennis. Surrounded by the Long Pond Greenbelt Preservation area, this last of its kind property offers privacy and endless choices for a new owner.

Also in this issue, be sure to check out our current Marketwatch report (page 54) as brokers tell us that the current seller’s market has turned into one of the busiest seasons ever in the Hamptons; Kate C. Patchett’s feature on the upcoming Hamptons International Film Festival - this year it’s a virtual and drivein event, but still one not to miss; Leila Jones’ “Bold Spirit,” featuring designer Alicia Murphy’s reinterpretation of farmhouse style in a Wainscott new build; Anne Halpin’s “Seaside Gardens,” for ideas to consider for your East End garden

HAUTE SPOT DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER CHRISTIANE ARBESU’S PASSION PROJECT

C

hristiane Arbesu is really good at telling other people’s stories.

The documentary filmmaker is especially gifted when it comes to producing meaningful content for good causes. This past summer, she lent her skills to two of the East End’s most successful not-for-profit organizations — the Ellen Hermanson Foundation’s Gala, which was held via video in July and raised more than $111,000, and the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s virtual Gala in the Garden fundraiser, which brought in approximately $750,000 in August.

Cuban ambassador to Indonesia, was concerned about Fidel Castro and his communist regime. So he decided to move himself, his wife, and their children, away from the tiny island country and sought political asylum in Montreal.

Tracking down and meeting with her aunts, uncles and cousins, some of whom had been presumed dead, she finally got the chance to learn about the family she never knew. They all greeted her with outstretched arms, kisses and tears of joy. “It’s incredible, it’s like an explosion of feelings,” says Arbesu. “And yet it’s so profoundly sad. Because we lost so much time.”

“The mission is to create visual content that uniquely connects brands to consumers by empowering people to make informed decisions for their well being,” she says.

The impetus for the 51-minute film was how the Cold War affected her kin in Cuba. Her father, the first

He believed that the move would be temporary; that he could return with his family after a few months had passed. But, unfortunately, they were never allowed to return to step foot on the ground of their homeland. “Growing up in Montreal, there was an element of sadness and longing for the family that had been left behind,” says Arbesu. In 2016, when President Obama opened relations with Cuba, she leapt at the opportunity to finally be able to make the pilgrimage to the place of her family’s origins.

experience when politics forces severe decisions to be made; it is something that breaks the hearts of all involved.”

Even though she had been born in Montreal, and had never actually stepped foot on the ground of her family’s native land, the homecoming was Dancing with Uncle Mafo emotional. Making the trek back to the onceforbidden country, Arbesu visited the places once familiar to her parents and the graves of her ancestors as she met with as many relatives as she could locate.

The Hamptons Bays resident, and founder of Terrebonne Productions, has spent the past 20-plus years helping non-profit and corporate clients get their messages across visually. Clients include Bayer, The American Liver Foundation, Montefiore Health System, Nike, Pfizer, Verizon, among others.

But there’s one story that’s her own to tell. And with her first feature documentary, “I Am Arbesu,” she has finally gotten to share it with others, including her large, extended family.

BY DAWN WATSON

“I Am Arbesu” is the story of the reuniting of a family separated by politics and geography. For more than 50 years,” she says. “The subsequent pain and suffering mine and too many other families

Many of those she interviewed and talked with have now passed, including her own mother, who was never able to return to her native land. But despite the lost time and accompanying sorrow, there were also many moments of pure joy, such as when Arbesu meets up with her kin for a family dinner, dances in the street with an uncle and connects her father to his relatives via cell phone. A love letter to her family, and to the resilient spirit of the people of Cuba, the award-winning film showcases the beauty and joy of the place and the people, as well as the poignancy of reuniting with lost love. Colorful and filled with the character of place and time, it’s especially poignant as so many of the people who are featured in it are now gone, including her mother. “Visiting Cuba for the first time in March 2016 changed my life forever and the lives of the many relatives I was finally able to meet,” says Arbesu. “While we cannot make up for the 53 years of lost time, we have a restoration of the fabric of love that exists in spite of such division.” To learn more, visit www.terrebonneproductions.com.

HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL VIRTUAL AND DRIVE-IN EDITION BY KATE C. PATCHETT

The Father - Olivia Colman & Anthony Hopkins Photo: Sean Gleason, Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics

T

he 28th edition of the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) has shifted its traditional viewing format to offer virtual and drive-in options for viewers this year. Running from

October 8 through 14, the festival promises its usual lineup of thought-provoking, relevant long, short, fiction, and independent documentary films. A collection of films from around the world will be accompanied by postscreening Q&As and exclusive talks, while following CDC and WHO guidelines. This new hybrid format of virtual cinema and drive-in screenings includes films in sections like Conflict and Resolution, Views from Long Island, Compassion, Justice and Animal Rights, and more.

HIFF will kick off with its opening night featuring

the world premiere of With Drawn Arms from Glenn Kaino and Afshin Shahidi. To be awarded the Film of Conflict and Resolution Award, a signature HIFF given to a film that “deals with the complex issues and societal effects of war and violence, and the attendant human dramas, in creative ways,” this story follows the legacy of Olympic athlete Tommie Smith. Centered around Smith’s fist-raising gesture at the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico City – an act of silent protest that is one of the most recognizable images in the history of sports – the film includes interviews from various subjects including soccer gold medalist and activist Megan Rapinoe, the late U.S. Representative John Lewis, and actor Jesse Williams, who also serves as an executive producer along with musician John Legend.

Nearly 50 years have passed since this iconic moment

raising a salute to human rights. Smith partnered with artist Kaino to explore and expand this legacy, traveling around the country to meet key figures inspired by his sacrifice and working on new art projects designed to connect Smith’s intention to a new generation. The film is described as being the “untold story of [Smith’s] sacrifice becomes a cautionary tale of how we must work together to keep each other’s stories alive, and a reminder of how much, but also how little, has changed for athletes who are using their voices to make a difference.” The award is accompanied by a $5,000 cash prize from the Brizzolara Family Foundation.

“In the face of these unprecedented times, we are

thrilled to continue to present unique and fascinating films for our audiences — from thrilling narratives like The Father and Nine Days to powerful documentaries like Stray and Harry Chapin: When in Doubt, Do Something,” said HamptonsFilm artistic director David Nugent. “We are particularly proud to be opening this year’s 28th edition with a film that explores a seminal moment from the civil rights movement that continues to resonate with today’s climate of conflict and change in With Drawn Arms.” Harry Chapin: When in Doubt, Do Something H A M P T O N S R E A L E S TAT E S H O W C A S E . will be another world premiere unveiled at HIFF. Rick Korn’s film illuminates the world of awardwinning songwriter Harry Chapin and his life defined by his storytelling and humanitarian work. The Long Island artist is known for such hits as “Cats in the Cradle” and “Taxi,” and as such this will be debuted in the festival’s Views from Long Island section. Chronicling his life’s journey, from his rise to fame to his untimely death, Korn includes archival footage and interviews with famous friends and fans. Among these is Billy Joel, Pete Seeger, Pat Benatar, and Bruce Springsteen. The film is a beautiful celebration of Chapin’s art and activism.

In another documentary by Elizabeth Lo that

is sure to capture the attention of viewers is the film Stray, shot through the eyes of three stray dogs – Zeytin, Nazar, and Kartal – wandering around the streets of Istanbul. It is through this lens that we see the overlooked corners of society. These animals search for food and shelter, embarking on

inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that portray an unvarnished portrait of human life. “Whether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages, protesters without arms, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing,” a description of the film reads. This inspiring tale will be shown in the Compassion, Justice and Animal Rights section.

MARKETWATCH HRES: Where do you see the market heading for the rest of 2020?

Gary DePersia: I see a continuation of what has been happening since the spring. I see renters staying out east longer

than they expected and probably paying more than in past years. Some are even looking to commit now for next summer or year-round. I see a continuation of people looking to buy. I also see builders going back into the market in a big way to buy land and start construction in response to shrinking new home inventory.

Gary DePersia, The Corcoran Group

HRES: What changes have you seen in the market throughout the course of the pandemic?

Christopher Covert: The market has seen so many changes. Not only in sheer volume and demand but, more

noteworthy, in buyer attitude. We have seen a complete shift from the analytical and measured approach that we have experienced over the last several years to a very emotional purchase process. Buyers now need something, not just want something. There has been an urgency that we have not experienced in the past. It has been a rapid and dramatic transformation in how buyers approach the market. Christopher Covert, Compass

HRES: What amenities/features are buyers most interested in right now?

Judi Desiderio: Homes with multiple places to work and learn online. The great rooms of the past have given way to

more places from which to have virtual meetings while other family members are learning or working. Privacy and more nooks and crannies needed for the new world we are in.

Judi Desiderio, Town & Country Real Estate

HRES: Where do you see the market heading for the rest of 2020?

Mary Slattery: While I do not have a crystal ball, I can report an increase of inquiries for post-Labor Day through

December rentals. It’s possible that we will see both rentals and sales continue to be robust through the end of this year and into 2021. I am expecting to see new sales listings enter the market after Labor Day as more homeowners begin testing the sales market.

Mary Slattery, The Corcoran Group

HRES: In your experience, are buyers still looking for virtual tours vs. in-person showings of homes for sale?

Raphael Avigdor & Aleksandrina Penkova: Interestingly enough, we don’t think there will ever be a replacement for

walking the actual property and home. Houses and properties here are very diverse when it comes to layouts, finishes and updates done over time. They are harder to envision than a straightforward plan of an apartment in New York City, for example. In addition, a lot of the buyers have never owned a house prior, so they have a lot of questions when it comes to how the different systems in the home work. Moreover, house tours can be done while complying with all safety guidelines, which clients and agents in the Hamptons have been very respectful of.

become more and more common.

Breast cancer is one of these. Often champions for the cause, sometimes victims themselves, step forward and create new ways to raise awareness and funds to help prevent future spreading of the disease and to find a cure. The late Evelyn H. Lauder, former Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estee Lauder Companies and a breast cancer survivor herself, was one of these champions. In 1993 Mrs. Lauder founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and became its Chairman. Inspired by her own experience as a breast cancer survivor, in 1989 she initiated the fundraising drive that established a state-of-the art breast and diagnostic center at New York’s Memorial Sloan Iris Dankner and Family Photo: Richard Lewin
