Dreams of East Hampton Village Living Gary R. DePersia Licensed A s sociate Real Es t ate Broker m 516.380.0538 | gdp@corcor an.com

East Hampton. You’ve always dreamt about that stunning village house you’d buy walking distance to everything in East Hampton, perhaps even on the coveted Circle itself. Hopefully, the house would have been recently constructed for exacting owners by a great builder like Farrell Building Co with all the bells and whistles you would expect in new construction including a full house audio and central vacuum. Of course, you would want your home to be sitting behind a gated entry with mature landscaping shielding it from the neighboring properties. Wouldn’t it be nice too if you could just plop your furniture in without having to do any renovations? Certainly, you could imagine the languorous lunches and intimate moonlit dinners you’d enjoy either in the formal dining room al fresco or on your stone patios all prepared in the new state-of-the-art kitchen under a coffered ceiling that includes Wolf range, Sub-Zero refrigeration and center island with two-inch Calcutta stone countertops, second sink and additional refrigerator. Didn’t your wish list also include a dramatic sun-drenched great room under vaulted, paneled ceilings as well as separate den for quiet reflection? And naturally, it would be great if the master was conveniently located on the first floor with his and her bathrooms and double doors out to the stone patio while three additional bedrooms were found in the finished lower level, all with baths ensuite. Didn’t you mention the loft like second floor with ample room for another living room or entertaining areas? And how about that detached two car garage to hold all your toys? Well I just happen to have one if you are still in the market. But you better hurry as there aren’t any other 4-bedroom, 4,800 SF beautifully maintained homes sitting on The Circle at the moment. Yes, dreams can come true if you are quick enough to buy this sensational new offering. Exclusive. $3.995M WEB# 873527

Spectacular Seven Acre Oceanfront Compound East Hampton. Heroic ocean views are merely the prologue to the story that unfolds off East Hampton’s fabled Further Lane as nearly 7 lush acres on two separate parcels plays host to both house and guest house along 300’ of pristine oceanfront. A gated entry opens to reveal a sprawling 2-story, 5,900 +/- SF residence on its own 5.4 acres designed by Zwirko & Ortmann to incorporate enviable vistas from every room over the gently, undulating dunescape to a vast liquid backdrop. The great room under a vaulted and beamed ceiling forms the nucleus of this chic, recently refurbished retreat which is anchored on one end by a fireplace and on the other by the dining area. A generous eat in kitchen with fireplace opens to a covered porch with room for alfresco dining sure to resonate with conversation and laughter during meals both large and small while looking out to the sea. A guest master with private terrace, an additional fireplaced bedroom suite, powder room and a glass encased office adjacent to the two-car garage complete the first floor. Upstairs, the master wing with its own terrace finds seclusion on the eastern end of the residence while fortunate guests will be very comfortably ensconced in a generous suite with fireplace and terrace to the west. A separate staircase finds another guest or staff suite. Outside broad stone terraces wrap around the rear of the residence affording expansive views with room for copious lounging to enjoy it all. While a 50’ pool with ocean views is found leeward of the residence framed by a large bluestone patio a new 60’ oceanside infinity edged pool is also a possibility. Noted Hamptons mid-century architect Alfred Scheffer designed the recently renovated 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath guest house with fireplace that resides on its own 1.3 acres seamlessly landscaped into the park-like grounds. The two-story structure with sleeping loft has its own heated Gunite pool and a detached garage creatively transformed into a spacious gym. While both houses are ripe for renovation and expansion, an ambitious new owner might create something more befitting this gorgeous acreage that could include a 12,500 SF new residence oceanside as well as a 6,000 SF guest house, both of which could be enhanced with more square footage in finished lower levels. In addition, the property has more than ample room for a sunken north/south tennis court. With endless possibilities and the broad, white sandy beach at the end of your private walkway, this substantial oceanside compound awaits your private tour. Exclusive. $72M WEB#872050

HAUTE SPOT APRIL GORNIK: CHAMPION OF THE ARTS BY DAWN WATSON

A

locally sourced grab-and-go café, though because of the pandemic the theaters will remain closed for screenings until it’s safe gather again. And under the guidance of architect Lee Skolnick, the Church has been restored and renovated, and has programming in place that will commence once a Certificate of Occupancy has been issued. She couldn’t be prouder of the outcomes.

pril Gornik didn’t necessarily start out to become an activist. Yet over the past decade-plus, through her involvement in a number of Sag Harbor community efforts and outreach, the North Haven-based artist has become one of the leading voices for advocacy here on the East End. An accomplished painter, her work hangs in such venerable institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of American Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Best known for her dreamlike large-scale landscape paintings, Gornik’s work is in a number of other major public and private collections and has been shown at the Whitney Biennial in New York, the Venice Biennale, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill and Guild Hall in East Hampton, where she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award back in 2003. Alongside her notable accomplishments on canvas — linen, technically — the artist has carved out a serious “second career” as a community crusader. It started out locally back in 2007, when she became involved with Save Sag Harbor. Since, she’s lent her considerable efforts to the Sag Harbor Partnership, working tirelessly to rebuild

“Both look amazing. It’s a blast to show people through the Cinema, and watch them be blown away. Wait till you hear the sound in the theaters… and wait till you see how we’ve renovated the Church. We cannot wait to open our doors fully to both venues.” Though she’s committed to improving the community, Gornik is getting something deeply personal out of her efforts as well. the Sag Harbor Cinema and raising a community arts center and artists’ residency from the bones of the former Sag Harbor United Methodist Church. “For me, helping with causes I believe in is tremendously rewarding and important,” she says. “Although I must say I’m in a little more over my head than I’d planned at the moment!” Gornik and her husband, artist Eric Fischl, are so committed to improving their community that they have gladly given millions of their own money to these various projects. Several years ago, they sold their lofts in SoHo to buy the Church and jumped in to lead the efforts to rebuild and reimagine the Cinema after it burned down four years ago. “The Cinema kind of fell in my lap from working with the Sag Harbor Partnership after Save Sag Harbor, and then the Church came back on the market a couple of years ago, after everyone had written it off as a private residence,” reports Gornik. “I was thrilled that Eric was inspired to throw our hats in the ring for it, so now there’s that as well to work on and it’s a joy.”

The two monumental projects are now almost ready to roll, she reports. The Cinema quietly opened recently for small private tours and a

“Culture is a critical part of keeping our souls and spirits fed and lifted — nothing needed more apparently than now during Covid,” she says, adding that, of course, the basics of having enough food and shelter are paramount. “There have been so many studies done saying that people who are active in and contribute to causes they believe in are happier, and that that seems to be deep in our DNA.” As the Cinema and the Church are nearly complete, the artist is now back in the studio a bit more regularly, she says. She’s recently completed a new print that she is donating to the Southampton Arts Center for fundraising. And, of course, she’s already on the lookout for new projects that need championing. The big question is, with so much on her plate, when does this woman sleep? “Argh, that’s an ongoing problem,” she says. “I am trying. But I sometimes wake myself up because I’m too damn excited about everything, so how lucky am I?”

TURN, TURN, TURN Listed for sale after being on the rental market for years and years, the historic Windmill House at 64 Deep Lane in Amagansett is now available for $11.5 million. Most notably the 1957 summer home of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, the three-story, 1,300-square foot circa-1830 house features a former working windmill, two bedrooms, one bath and occupies 5.45 acres. Monroe and Miller, who were married at the time, took the lease to escape the New York City tabloid press. Monroe reportedly prepared for her upcoming role in “Some Like It Hot” while staying at the quaint and cozy cottage, which is being represented by Bobby Rosenbaum of Douglas Elliman. The rustic Quail Hill Farm-adjacent home was previously owned by Fabergé cosmetics founder Samuel Rubin and later by Upjohn pharmaceutical heiress Deborah Ann Light, who donated a 20-acre chunk of the property to the Peconic Land Trust back in the 1990s. Over the years the property has been a temporary rental home to writer Kurt

Vonnegut, actor Terence Stamp, designer Ralph Lauren and “Stargazer” sculptress Linda Scott. ARTISTS & WRITERS East Hampton’s Squirrel Hall is on the market for the first time in 60 years. The former home and art studio of abstract expressionist painter Conrad Marca-Relli — a contemporary of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, and the person who identified Pollock’s body after his fatal car crash in 1956 — is another property rife with cultural history. Currently owed by former Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim Museum curator C.Y. de Moura and fine art painter and designer Giovanni de Moura, the home has been graced by such famous faces as the aforementioned Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, who rented it for a week in the late 1950s, and frequent guests de Kooning and Pollock. Located at 852 Springs Fireplace Road in Springs, the property is one lot away from the famed Pollock Krasner House. The 2.39-acre property comprises a rustic 3,000-square-foot, circa-1800s shinglestyle main house with many original details, plus a

Martha Gundersen & Paul Brennan, Douglas Elliman Real Estate

STILL STRONG IN THE HAMPTONS BY KATE C. PATCHETT

W

ell, we have made it through 2020 and are approaching the finish line. It’s been a complete whirlwind, to say the least. The real estate market picked up at the start of the pandemic and things haven’t slowed down, nor does it look like it will any time soon. Sellers still have the upper hand while buyers still search for available properties to buy or rent. Hamptons real estate agents have been busier than ever, and are preparing for another fast-moving season in 2021.

The trend of buyers choosing the Hamptons as their primary home location will continue into the new year. “Without question, we are seeing and feeling the change in population here in the Hamptons,” shares Corcoran licensed associate real estate broker Tim Davis. “I read [recently] that nearly 6,000 new residents have decided to make the East End their permanent home. We are quite fortunate in that regard.”

For those that are not quite certain about the Hamptons, or have yet to sell other properties before purchasing a new one, the rental market has always been an ideal entry to test the waters. Enzo Morabito, licensed associate real estate broker with Douglas Elliman found that while the Hamptons rental market was very busy

54

early on with COVID-19, it has now stabilized as consumers began buying. Brown Harris Stevens associate real estate broker Christopher Burnside says the market is difficult on all fronts, and premiums are forcing tenants to look in other areas never considered before.

What buyers are looking for now has not changed over the past year. Access to the outdoors and natural spaces remains strong, as well as the transition at home for indoor-outdoor living. Separate spaces for a home office and virtual classroom are also important, as well as good connectivity as many have transitioned to a virtual lifestyle. Homes that are move-in ready are of course ideal, as well as the ever-coveted new construction.

Though sellers do have that upper hand, agents do have recommendations for buyers in this market. One is that now is still the time to purchase as inventory continues to shrink. Charles Forsman, a licensed real estate salesperson with The Petrie Team at Compass, says in this market buyers need an agent that will be honest with them. “It is no secret the current market is competitive for buyers,” he explains. “Finding an agent who is going to give you an accurate market analysis for the properties you are interested in is a

must. While some of the well-priced homes are selling within days of being listed, there are other properties that are certainly reaching for a high price. Short and sweet: knowing the market and acting fast on properties of interest.”

2021 is practically here, and we look forward to what the new year holds. The impact of the pandemic will continue and the real estate market will remain strong, many agents predict. While this is good news to an extent, for sellers and contractors, there can be some downsides.

“The sales prices have risen with the demand, and the contractors are busy,” share Plum Builders’ Al and Mary Giaquinto. “Although that imbalance will stabilize, sales prices will not revert back to 2019 levels; those are in the past. There is such a limited supply of properties on the East End that our local professional people are priced completely out of the market both for rentals and sales, a truly unfortunate development for local businesses.”

Hamptons real estate agents now share their thoughts on the current and future state of the local market…

MARKETWATCH HRES: The COVID-19 shutdowns saw a lot of buyers choosing the Hamptons as their primary home location. Do you see this trend continuing? Christopher Burnside: The beach versus the city? This seems like an obvious decision especially when your health is concerned. Remote learning, virtual offices, and quality of life prevail in the Hamptons.

Christopher Burnside, Brown Harris Stevens

HRES: What advice do you have for buyers in this seller’s market? Tim Davis: Look closely at the recent sales data which is quite abundant. Don’t overprice your home thinking that the market value has necessarily increased beyond the closed sales data. A flood of overpriced properties could stall the flow of our market right now. For buyers, provide as much data about existing conditions, current zoning, expansion possibilities and the importance of still buying the best locations.

Tim Davis, The Corcoran Group

HRES: How is the rental market doing, both year-round and seasonal? Mary Giaquinto: The rental market is strong, and the demand continues to be strong especially for well-maintained homes with the right mix of technology and wellness features that are in demand today. Again, prices have strengthened.

Al & Mary Giaquinto, Plum Builders

HRES: Any insights into how you see the market evolving as we head into 2021? Enzo Morabito: There are a lot of brokers out here, because there’s a lot of business. Change brings opportunity and the market should continue to be healthy. This is still a vacation community, but it’s also now even more year-round than it’s ever been. Even the typically summer-only and seasonal pop-ups are staying open because everyone’s here.

Enzo Morabito, Douglas Elliman Real Estate

HRES: What are current buyer must-haves in this market? Charles Forsman: I would say the biggest “must-have” is something move-in ready. However, other interests have not changed, even as winter approaches and the temperature begins to drop. Aside from most people looking for something move-in ready, there are two major checklist items that attract the average buyer, a pool and central air conditioning/heat.

Charles Forsman of The Petrie Team, Compass 55

Art and Soul A SAG HARBOR HOUSE FROM THE EARLY AUGHTS REIMAGINED BY LEILA JONES

W

hen David Scott and Alex Pashkowsky, clapped eyes on a 7,000-square-foot shingled house on three acres of land in Sag Harbor’s North Haven neighborhood, the couple made three major

decisions within minutes. The first decision was to buy the property. In style and form, the house was reminiscent of the vernacular architecture of Nantucket, even though it was a new-ish build from the early aughts with standard-issue finishes throughout. Hence their second decision, namely to refurbish structure from the ground up. “The place had a rambling charm,” Scott, of David Scott Interiors, recalls. “And good bones. But there was a lot of sheet rock and there wasn’t much molding and the rooms were pretty bare.” As the two men walked around the property, they felt certain that the six bedroom, eight bathroom house had the potential for greatness. The only thing it lacked was, in Scott’s word, “soul.” And that realization led to the pair’s third snap decision: Scott’s design would eschew the standard hallmarks of beach décor. The place would not have the white-on-white palette or the chilly minimalist aesthetics of a typical high-end Hamptons weekend retreat. Instead, Photos: Antoine Bootz

there would be lots of color and fantastic art and interesting objects. The interiors would be moody and deep-textured. Most important of all, there would be spaces for living large all year long. In short, a space of exuberant splendor checked by maximum restraint. It was true that the house was rather big for just two people. But the opportunity — and for an interior designer, what is a house if not an opportunity? — was too good to pass up.

WELLNESS

HOME SWEET HOME HYGGE – THE DANISH ART OF CONTENTMENT BY ISABELLA JENKINS

S

o, you haven’t heard of hygge, the Danish art of contentment? Well you’ll be hearing more and more about it. In 2016, it was one of the words on Oxford Dictionaries’ 2016 “word of the year” shortlist. And, if you do a search on Amazon you will find many books on the subject, a game, recipes, candles, even a T-shirt. They all want to let you into the secret of why Danes are the world’s happiest people. It wasn’t always thus. A century or so ago Denmark boasted a large empire and its people were as miserable as everyone else. But when its power began to wane, its citizens compensated by developing an insular mindset. While the country had looked outward for its power previously, it was time to delve inward: both inside the home and inside the person.

76

Pillows and throws make for a cozy hyggeinspired living room

“It is a feeling of being warm, safe, comforted and well,” according to The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort and Connection. “To hygge is to invite intimacy and connection.” As you can see, the term is used as a verb as well as a noun and adjective. Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard captured hygge’s challenge when he wrote: “Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it.”

While there is no translation into English, many define hygge (pronounced “hue-guh”) as “coziness.” It is that and then some. It’s about doing things that make you feel good, especially around the home – from relaxing in a candlelit bathtub to hanging out with friends enjoying togetherness and conviviality. It’s about quietly celebrating life’s little moments and being in the moment. Call it Danish Zen if you will.

The sharing of meals and the act of cooking are huge in hygge. In How to Hygge: The Nordic Secrets to a Happy Life, a cookbook and wellness guide, the author has a section on “Twenty Steps to Nordic Kitchen Hygee,” which advises us to “master at least five ways to cook with nature’s original superfood: the egg” and “take the time to make a simple loaf of bread.” She also rhapsodizes on triple cherry gløgg, a mulled wine with cardamom pods and star anise that she calls “healthy hedonism.”

Images depicting hygge are often of a curled-up kitty, a smoldering fire, a pair of slippers, a pile of books by the bed, a bird’s nest – all meant to reinforce the idea of shelter. For some reason there seem to be loads of pictures depicting a mug of cocoa – you’ve got to love a philosophy where chocolate is a component.

While much centers around the sanctuary of home (eluding those frigid Nordic winters), the outdoors also has a place in hygge. Playing sports or just picking wildflowers – both are preferable to going to the gym or ordering a bouquet online. Forage for berries, take a hike, grab a paddleboard. Biking is a hygge pursuit too – but don’t do it on

a high-speed racer but rather the slow kind with a woven basket. To appreciate nature is to hygge. Hygge encompasses embracing the mundane and is consciously practiced in everyday routines. Instead of sweeping the porch or making the bed with a feeling of resentment, you instead honor the sense of ritual. According to an article about the subject in the New Yorker, hygge is about “artisanal this and homemade that, fetishizing what’s rustic as authentic, what’s simple as sophisticated: urban American sophisticates already know this aesthetic; we’ve aspired to it for a long time.” Amen.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON BAY STREET THEATER IS MOVING TO A NEW LOCATION IN SAG HARBOR BY RICHARD LEWIN

I

n 1986, when “C.B.D.” stood for “Central Business District”, the Village of Sag Harbor Trustees, in cooperation with the New York State Secretary of State and the U.S. Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, officially adopted a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (“L.W.R.P.”). The Trustees agreed that there was a need to establish a zoning plan for the precious Waterfront (and the rest of the Village). Because of the special importance and uniqueness of the area, three wholly new Waterfront zoning districts were established to control future development: Resort Motel (“RM”), Waterfront (“WF”), and Marine (“MA”). According to Jack Youngs, Vice President of the Sag Harbor Historical Society, the Village’s awakening to the need for updated formal zoning was most likely prompted principally by a 1985 real estate development proposal. It would have permitted the conversion of what is considered the Village’s oldest dwelling, the beloved classic “Umbrella House” (now Cavaniola’s on Division Street), and the demolition of the adjacent building. They would be replaced by a combination of condominiums and a small shopping complex, to be called “Umbrella House Walk”. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Joan Tripp, 25-year President of the Society, the plan was defeated, to the delight of Village residents who

80

feared any loss of historic local flavor. The position of opponents of the development at the time was that strip malls would cater only to tourists, citing the vacancies at the then-new Water Street Shops, which had opened in July of 1985. With the recent Breaking News announcement by Bay Street Theater’s Executive Director Tracy Mitchell, that B.S.T. had purchased the Water Street Shops property at 22 West Water Street (now commonly referred to as “The 7-Eleven Property”) for the location of their future permanent new home, planned for 2023. The Village’s attention to zoning is once again in sharp focus. The Theater in its current location has been a beacon for the East End Arts community since opening there in 1991, so the move has major significance. Two of the three founders of Bay Street Theater, Emma Walton Hamilton and Stephen Hamilton, are pictured above. The third was the late Sybil Christopher. Recent real estate activity on Sag Harbor’s unique Waterfront area has resulted in the decision of the Village Trustees to declare a six-month moratorium on development, while zoning updates are considered. According to Sag Harbor Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy, Nelson Pope & Voorhis, the Form-Based Codes Institute and Chuck Banas Design have been hired to study and recommend

any zoning changes by January 2021. Of primary importance will be the preservation of the public’s visual and physical access to the water, and the maintenance of Sag Harbor as a village where walking is a primary means of local transportation. To this end, in 2019 Southampton Town purchased 1.25 acres of waterfront property for $10.5 million from the Community Preservation Fund, with the intention of creating the John Steinbeck Waterfront Park, design donated by Edmund Hollander Landscape Design, which will connect the Windmill and Long Wharf through a walkway under the Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter Veterans Memorial Bridge. For seventeen years Dan Gasby and his late wife B. Smith (pictured above) owned the famous “B. Smith’s Restaurant” on Long Wharf. Dan was recently elected to the Board of Bay Street Theater. Whatever the future brings to the Sag Harbor Waterfront, his sentiments are shared by all who love the Village. Realizing that nothing in life is static, he is thrilled that Bay Street Theater will have its very own new entertainment and technology complex. He loves his Village, which he has always found to be more than sympathetic and supportive, with special thanks to Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy. www.baystreet.org

A

s the holidays approach, take advantage of the South Fork’s artisan purveyors to do a little shopping. You can find everything you need for the food and beverage lover in your life at some of the Hamptons’ own stores and markets. Dig in! GRINDSTONE COFFEE AND DONUTS You’ll need to make sure to order these beautiful donuts the same day you gift them, but the sweets lover in your life definitely will not be disappointed by these brioche-style donuts. For a holiday morning, the maple sea salt donuts are hard to beat, but if you’re going to try, aim for the apple cider donuts, the lemon poppyseed, or even the cinnamon-sugar. Orders can be placed online. HARBOR MARKET & KITCHEN This Sag Harbor market sells lovely handcrafted foodie gifts for Hanukkah and Christmas, including Hanukkah chocolate gelt, chocolate Advent calendars, peppermint drinking chocolate, and peppermint bark. You can also pick up organic, free-trade espresso for the coffee lover, small-batch hot fudge, assorted candies and biscuits, and oils and vinegars.

WÖLFFER ESTATE VINEYARD In Sagaponack, stop by this vineyard for wine — and far more. In addition to their benchmark rosés, Wölffer has many other gift-worthy options, too, like their Grapes of Roth Virgin Berry Riesling, which scored a 90-point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the Diosa Late Harvest White, which scored a 92-point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and the Grapes of Roth Merlot, which also scored a 92-point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. MONTAUK BREWING COMPANY This Montauk-based brewery is now selling “crowlers,” or large-format beers in cans. Five flavors are currently available: the Mango Kolsch, the Juicy IPA, the Pilsner, the Wave Chaser, and the Cold Day IPA. Each crowler is 32-ounces and can be ordered online for curbside pickup at the Montauk location. For the non-beer enthusiast, you can also opt for a six-pack of the brewery’s hard seltzer. Black cherry and mixed berry are both currently available online.

LEVAIN BAKERY Levain’s epic, palm-sized cookies can hold up for days on end, and they make the perfect gift for the foodie in your life. Located in Wainscott, the bakery is known for their chocolate chipwalnut, dark chocolate chip, dark chocolate peanut butter chip, and oatmeal raisin cookies, all of which are practically a meal in and of themselves. Signature cookie gift boxes, which come wrapped, can be purchased in three sizes: four, eight, or 12. They can be stored for a week and, per Levain’s recommendations, should be heated before eating. LOAVES & FISHES This iconic Bridgehampton store has been open for four decades, and it’s still a reliable go-to for delicious, homemade desserts. Gift the food lover in your life a tart, fruit pie, or meringue, depending on what Sybille Van Kempen has on offer for the week (the menu changes weekly, and is posted online). For a more festive gift, consider the store’s layer and bundt cakes, which never fail to impress. Happy Holidays!

Create YOU Love WHAT

THE ART OF JOJO ANAVIM BY HEATHER BUCHANAN

L

ong Island born artist Jojo Anavim is as bright and original as his artwork, and despite his soaring career and celebrity collectors which would boost any ego, cites being humble and grateful as his keys to success. “My motto is be good to people and create quality work and the universe will take care of the rest.” To thine own self be true is another artistic guiding principal. “Create what you love and not what you think will sell,” he advises.

of color, nostalgia for brands from his youth and a witty sense of humor permeate his art. Of these partnerships he comments, “Every brand has their own unique story, and it’s my job to be a cultural archaeologist in a way and bring that story to life.” The Hamptons where he spent summers was always his happy place and he waxes nostalgic of having a drink at the American Hotel Bar (in the age of Covid don’t we all!). A pivotal moment in his career came at a house party in the Hamptons. “A buddy

The support of his parents who emigrated from Iran has been essential for his confidence, encouraging his creativity from an early age. As a child he was already studying with Disney animator Al Baruch. Anavim honed his skills as a creative consultant in commercial art for such brands as the W Hotels, Sephora and Universal Music Group, laying the groundwork for elevating everyday objects into objects of transcendence. In 2013 he decided to take the leap to fine art. Anavim recounts, “I always loved commercial art but you want to grow and evolve and you’re always asking yourself what’s next. My pet peeve is status quo or stagnation.” His rolling stone definitely gathers no moss. Thinking outside the box (or the box literally) has broadened his appeal and reach. His art work has adorned everything from a Yankees seat for an auction to a celebratory champagne bottle for the Indy Car Grand Prix to 50 limited edition hand painted boxes for Venus et Fleur. Anavim creates safe space for these high-profile clients, keeping his studio cell phone free and a place to relax and proverbially let their hair down. “By nature of who I am I don’t get star struck,” he says, “I think of them as creators and they think of me as a creator and we bond on that level.” Personal privacy is also important to Anavim who separates his personal and professional life, “For me it’s really important to stay off the radar as much as I can personally – my family time is important to me.” So, what is on the bucket list for this already accomplished young artist? “I’ve always had on my radar to execute a sculptural series. Like everything I do I want to make sure it’s done correctly. Hopefully 2021 will see some three-dimensional works.”

of mine had rented a very nice place in Water Mill and there were always interesting people coming through from all walks of life — be it entertainers, artists or athletes,” he says, “You could meet people and it was just a great place for creative minds to collaborate.” One of these new friends he made was basketball player Kristaps Porzingis where he traded a painting for a lifetime supply of Adidas sneakers. Through everything from Instagram to word of mouth to traditional galleries his work has attracted celebrity collectors such as Selena Gomez, Seth McFarlane, Kylie Jenner and Sheldon

Anavim also looks forward to participating in the show B-Cawz at The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton featuring art that makes a difference in association with social impact art company Dandelion. “I have so many clients on the east end of Long Island and always admired the art scene and the galleries in town,” he says. “This year I signed with The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton and it’s been such a great partnership. Having great gallery representation in the Hamptons has always been a goal of mine since I began my career so it’s just such a great experience working with the team there.” And hopefully that will include a toast at the American Hotel. www.jojoanavim.com

If you take a moment to look across the pond as you turn, you will see a narrow lane, called James Lane, only three blocks long, that borders the other side, intersecting only Jefferys Lane, Maidstone Lane and Dunemere Lane. On James Lane are some of the most important historic properties in East Museum, the East Hampton Historical Society’s Mulford Farm Museum and the Gardiner Mill Cottage and Mill. WELCOME TO ST. JOHN THIS VIRGIN ISLAND IS A NATURE-LOVER’S PARADISE

T

he most incredible fact about St. John — the smallest of the three principal United States Virgin Islands, which is located about four miles east of St. Thomas and accessible either by boat or by small plane — is not that it is nicknamed Love City. It is not that donkeys roam its hilly roads, which range in altitude from sea level to roughly 1,000 feet above it, a height that is exploited at the island’s infamous 8 Tuff Miles road race, held each February. It is not the fact that Renée Zellweger’s infamously short-lived marriage to Kenny Chesney took place on one of the island’s pristine beaches (the singer is one of many wellheeled notables with a home on the laid-back island).

the provision that the lands must be protected from future development. The sole exception — the Caneel Bay Resort — operates on a lease agreement with the park service, which owns the land on which the resort sits. Sixty percent of St. John’s acreage is national park, and a great deal of the island’s waters, coral reefs, and shoreline have been protected by this provision. The island remains one of the world’s most astounding ecological preserves in the world, all because one man saw the future.

Three years after the battering of Hurricane Irma, St. John is starting to come alive again. Caneel Bay has not yet reopened, itself in the center of a debate regarding a lease agreement and an insurance claim, which both locals and tourists hope will someday work itself out. In the meantime, the island’s casual vibes and sandy spits lend themselves to long, languid days of lounging. St. John is by no means St. Barth’s. If anything it’s the distinct opposite, an island where nature has been encouraged to take over: donkeys wander, traffic (on the British side of

Photos: Hannah Selinger

The most incredible fact about St. John, actually, is the fact that, in 1956, Laurance Rockefeller, an American businessman, conservationist, and the son of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller, Jr., donated his private lands to the United States’ National Park Service, with

the road, irrespective of the American territory) meanders, snorkelers head out to find a turtle or two, friends catch the last lip of a setting sun with a painkiller before heading out to dinner. No shoes? No worries.

Rockefeller’s forward thinking has kept the reefs alive, too. Sunscreen and global warming and widespread environmental crises have impacted reefs throughout the world, but on St. John they still feel more vibrant than anywhere else I’ve seen in recent memory. Around Honeymoon Bay, a lurking barracuda has been stalking his prey for what seems like two decades now. The sea turtles are still dining at Maho Bay. The spotted eagle rays are still floating through space, long, graceful, like birds. Tarpon are big enough to take your breath away.

Nature finds its way into every setting on St. John. In Coral Bay, the island’s sleepier town, restaurants are outdoor-oriented. Even a little late-afternoon rain can’t prevent the whimsy of

a meal at Rhumb Lines, where colorful canopies, bespoke pillows, and potted plants evoke a cozy terrace. The road is right outside, and lucky onlookers might chance upon a flock of wayward chickens or, yes, even a donkey or two crossing the road. Such is the intersection of nature and everything else on this boundary-less island.

Perhaps nowhere is that unparalleled joy more apparent than from the beach. Look up from a spot of sand and you see — well, nothing, in fact. No high rises, because you cannot build them. The island has not a single massive hotel, ever since the Westin converted to timeshares. Instead, the beaches betray nothing besides rolling mountains of green, a peculiar delight for those who have traveled far and wide through a Caribbean known for its abundance, luxury, and over-accommodation. So plan your future trip to St. John. You won’t need much. Nature has you more than covered.

PURE LUXURY THE FLAGLER CLUB IS AN ELITE SANCTUARY AT THE TOP OF THE BREAKERS BY ZOE LANGSTROM

derived from food trucks reminds you that you’re in the current century. While we are there early in the week, we are told that on Fridays, pre-Covid, it was known as the liveliest bar scene in town. Lately I am going through a dumpling phase and order Shiitake Mushroom Pot Stickers and Hong Kong Dumplings: superb. The chopped salad with a cherry vinaigrette was out of this world and what the heck is in the jewel-green sauce served with the grilled artichoke? We could drink it by the gallon. We also sample the Salmon Yakitori that has been seared beautifully in a Japanese robata grill that uses bichotan charcoal to reach extremely high heat and seal in juices. Breakfast is at The Circle, a stunning circular room surrounded by immense Palladian windows and a buffet with everything you might desire including an omelet station, carving board and array of fruit. We try the dragon fruit, new to us with its red exterior and white seeded interior somewhat like kiwi. Not only does the newly renovated Seafood Bar overlook the sea, it also boasts an aquarium bar and serves up such delectable treats as conch fritters and crab nachos. The 140-acre property boasts 11 boutiques, nine restaurants, eight bars, four oceanfront pools, two 18-hole championship golf courses, fitness center, spa and poolside bungalows. here is no more iconic Palm Beach resort than The Breakers, a hotel that has been around since the Gilded Age in 1896. And there is no other word to describe it but “magnificent” – from the moment you are driven down the Royal Palmlined avenue to the lobby with its artisan-painted fresco ceiling. I have to keep pinching myself as a reminder that I’m in Florida, not a grand palazzo in Florence. Did I mention that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places?

Upon arrival, I am picked up at the airport by a chauffeur driving a Tesla then whisked upstairs to the Flagler Club, an elite sanctuary on the top two floors of a wing of the hotel. With only 25 rooms (compared to 513 in the rest of the establishment) it is tantamount to being a hotel within a hotel.
