DOWNTOWN MIAMI’S IMPRESSIVE TRANSFORMATION
BY MARIETTE WILLIAMS Photo: Aston Martin ResidencesDowntown Miami’s transformation has been nothing short of impressive. The area has come a long way from being a business hub full of office high-rises to its current standing as a cosmopolitan city center with Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury accommodations.
“The Miami Downtown market has evolved from a more commoditized product type to a blend of all types of developments,” says Jay Phillip Parker, CEO of Douglas Elliman Florida. “The enhancement of the lifestyle offerings from restaurants, private clubs, and fitness studios have complemented the overall lifestyle available in the downtown core which has attracted a higher caliber of buyers.”
Much of the city’s growth has happened in the last few years as developers have capitalized on the city’s potential, transforming the area with new restaurants and upscale residential and hotel openings. Here we take a look at what Downtown Miami now has to offer.
LUXURY STAYS
The downtown area has several newly opened hotel residences and residential properties with some of the best views and amenities in Miami. “We believe that the Downtown core will become more attractive to a super luxury theme,” Parker tells Hamptons Real Estate Showcase. “As buyers begin to see downtown as a suitable location for ultra-luxury, several developers will offer top-ofthe-line high-end residential, unlike anything we have seen.”
One of the newest openings downtown is The Residences at 1438 Brickell. With 189 thoughtfully designed luxury condos across 70 floors, residents get gorgeously designed two- to four-bedroom residences and access to 80,000 sq. ft. of amenities including a rooftop pool with poolside service and a 10,000 sq. ft. spa and gym. The burgeoning neighborhood continues to garner international and domestic attention as home to world-class brands and businesses.
At the Aston Martin Residences, one of the
tallest residential buildings south of New York City, there are 391 residences from studio apartments to a spectacular 10,000 sq. ft. triplex penthouse. The project is a partnership between Aston Martin and G&G Business Developments. The residences all include panoramic views of Biscayne Bay and state-of-the-art amenities, including a private marina that can accommodate superyachts.
Finally, the 49-story Elser Hotel & Residences has 646 rooms that look out onto Miami’s downtown skyline, and the property includes 24-hour concierge services, a two-story fitness center, and a cocktail bar in the lobby. The project is walking distance from some of the Miami’s major hotspots, including the new Miami World Center, the FTX Arena, The Science and Perez Art Museum and more.
TOP NOTCH DINING
Miami’s downtown restaurant scene is flourishing, in part to the new wave of restaurants helmed by world-class chefs. For an intimate dining experience, head to the Bib-
Gourmand-recognized Jaguar Sun, located in the lobby of the Miami Guild Downtown X hotel. The restaurant offers small pasta dishes, generous cocktails, and a raw menu featuring fresh oysters and scallops.
Great for a special night out, El Cielo Miami is a Michelin-starred diner in the heart of downtown Miami serving up modern Colombian cuisine in a warm, earthtoned dining room. For casual (but excellent) New York-style pizza, Miami Slice has gourmet pies with a heavenly crust, and MOTEK, a sunny Mediterranean diner has salmon skewers, four types of hummus, and an Arayes burger that won People’s Choice at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.
EXCITING ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Bayside Marketplace is a fixture in the downtown Miami area, and the waterfront outdoor retail and entertainment district is a convenient place to get drinks and a bite to eat before catching a Miami Heat game. Besides basketball, art reigns supreme in Miami too. The Perez Art Museum is a perennial favorite for modern and contemporary exhibits, and Verde, the museum’s restaurant, has a spacious patio for al fresco meals.
Another area attraction is the Phillip and Patricia Art Museum, a family-friendly venue with a 250-seat planetarium. Bayfront Park is a popular place to hang too. The park’s amphitheater is often the location of huge concerts, and the park is a great location for leisurely walks and bike rides. And a more recent addition to Downtown Miami’s landscape is the Miami Observation Wheel, which offers 42 glass gondolas with sweeping views of the city.

SUMMER SOJOURNS
WHERE THE SOUTH FLORIDA SET ESCAPES THE HEAT
BY SKYE SHERMANIt’s summertime and snowbirds have officially flown the South Florida coop. But where, exactly? Warmer (and cooler) climes await at these high-end destinations where you’ll find South Florida’s winter set beating the heat in style.
The Hamptons
Few places make a perfect pair quite like Palm Beach and the Hamptons. Both exclusive enclaves of the wealthy and A-listed, one shines with glorious weather in the winter, with the other taking over for the summer. Expect sun, sand, and surf in both, as well as ritzy stores and in-demand restaurant reservations.
Aspen
Après-ski in Aspen is one of winter’s best places to see and be seen, but it’s not a bad place to be caught come summertime, either. Sunny and warm with fields of flowers in full bloom, it’s an idyllic setting for hiking, mountain biking, and festivals like the popular Food and Wine Classic. Plus, you can get out on the water at Roaring Fork River via paddleboarding, kayaking, or even fly fishing.
The Hamptons Photo: Jake Rajs AspenNantucket
No place screams summer quite like this tiny island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Nantucket is insulated from the real world with shingled architecture, dune-lined beaches, charming wharves, cobblestone streets, and centuries of history. Still, even the most discerning visitors will find the restaurants and high-end boutiques up to their standards.
Monaco
Those with transportation means of their own and a desire to be hidden away amongst the world’s elite head for Monaco. Plan to arrive by yacht, private plane, or helicopter to fit in with the jet set. This microstate on the French Riviera is a beautiful spot to summer, complete with events, festivals, and plenty of excuses to dress up in your finest frock. No yacht of your own yet? Try your luck at the famous Monte Carlo Casino and cross your fingers.
Amalfi Coast
It’s not summer without at least a week on the Amalfi Coast of Italy, eating your fill of fresh pasta and pizza and sipping on sweet limoncello. Village-hop between Positano, Salerno, and Sorrento for the full experience, and make sure your Prada shades won’t darken the view of the area’s gorgeous pastel-colored cliffside homes and rugged Mediterranean Sea beaches.

BY SKYE SHERMANSummer may be Palm Beach’s off season, but there’s still plenty going on in this palm-studded paradise to keep your calendar as packed as you please. Beat the summer heat of the Sunshine State with these fun air-conditioned (or naturally cooled) activities.
PERUSE THE NORTON MUSEUM OF ART
The extensive programming at the Norton Museum of Art doesn’t take a summer break. What’s more, through September, Palm Beach County residents can visit for free during Summer at the Norton. Check the museum calendar for special events like Art After Dark and various art lectures, classes, and workshops, from drum circles to tai chi. Note that the museum is closed on Wednesdays in the summer.
CATCH A PERFORMANCE AT THE KRAVIS CENTER
While the Broadway season doesn’t start back up until November, special summer performances tend to pop up even in the offseason. If you’re in need of a little Motown and R&B Funk to chill out as season looms large on the horizon, The Commodores will take the stage in September.
PADDLE AROUND PEANUT ISLAND
Embrace the rays with a day spent on and paddling around Peanut Island, one of the area’s best snorkeling and boating spots. While a sandbar flotilla is the Saturday agenda item of choice for local boat owners, those with no floating vessel of their own can take the Peanut
Island Shuttle Boat, which departs every 25 minutes from just north of the Port of Palm Beach. The 10-minute ride will get you to Peanut Island in a jiffy, and the company even has snorkeling equipment for rent.
TOUR THE FLAGLER MUSEUM
Whether you go for the Independence Day Celebration or simply a tour of this 75-room Gilded-Age wonder, a visit to the Flagler Museum is the ideal summertime activity. The best way to appreciate the significance
and history of this former mansion — which Palm Beach founding father Henry Flagler built for his third wife — is with a docent-led tour, which is offered several times per day on weekdays. Self-guided tour brochures and narrated audio tour wands are also available. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays.
