THE 25TH ANNUAL HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WORLD PREMIERES, LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, DIRECTORIAL DEBUT
T
he 25th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) will take place on October 5-9, 2017. The festival was originally founded to celebrate Independent Filmmakers in the genres of long, short, fiction, and documentary films. Approximately 25,000 visitors will attend HIFF with over 150 films and 21 events in 14 venues across the East End. Cash and in-kind prizes will total $225,000. Many local businesses in the Hamptons benefit from partnering with HIFF. Some of these include Rowdy Hall, The Baker House, and The Hedge’s Mulford Farm in East Hampton. The Hamptons International Film Festival’s varied and interesting programs attract folks from around the world as well as locals who share a love of film and also enjoy experiencing the Hamptons. Alec Baldwin and Randy Mastro are now in their second year as Co-Chairs of HIFF. Alec Baldwin
has been a HIFF board member for the past decade and a longtime supporter of the festival, hosting its SummerDocs series for the past nine years, presenting new and groundbreaking documentary filmmaking and leading conversations after each screening. This year’s documentaries included NOBODY SPEAK: TRIALS OF THE FREE PRESS, TROPHY, TAKE EVERY WAVE: LAIRD HAMILTON, WHITNEY. “CAN I BE ME,” and ICARUS. Randy Mastro, on HIFF’s board for the past decade, is a partner in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, and Co-Chair of the Firm’s Litigation Practice Group.

The Opening Night film on Thursday, October 5 at Guild Hall in East Hampton, will feature the World Premiere of director Alison Chernick’s compelling documentary ITZHAK. The film depicts the extraordinary life and music of renowned violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman, widely considered to be the world’s greatest living violinist. Chernick creates a portrait of a man whose remarkable will to survive and passion for music allowed him to find a platform for personal expression against difficult circumstances. Itzhak Perlman, an East End resident, will be in attendance. In a recent press release, HIFF Artistic Director David Nugent said, “We are thrilled to announce Allison Chernick’s ITZHAK as our opening night feature, and to have the talented Itzhak Perlman himself join us for our anniversary year.”

POTUS PAL The Georgica Beach mansion Bill and Hillary Clinton rented in 2011 and 2012 has finally sold after being in contract for almost two years. With its formal furnishings, it must have made a welcome White House substitute for the former First Family. Owned by real estate developer Elie Hirschfeld, the 10,000 square-foot Lily Pond Lane abode sits on a generous acre, 200 feet of which front directly onto the ocean. Hirschfeld bought the home in 1996 for $3.2 million and totally renovated it in 2002 down to its foundation. The property typically rents for circa $150,000 per month.The $29 million purchase price, down from the $32.2 ask, marks the highest sale so far this year in East Hampton. ARMED AND DANGEROUS Hamptonites escaped summer with no terrorist attacks, but we imagine partygoers felt safer with the deployment of Southampton Town’s 15-strong counter-terrorism squad whose members seemed to be on guard at the season’s every chichi soiree. There they were, as revelers sipped rosé, swathed in bulletproof vests and armed to the gills with automatic weapons – at such elite fundraisers as that for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and the James Beard Foundation. While denying that there have been any actual threats, new police chief Steven Skrynecki told BloombergView that, with all the highprofile celebs and liberals in attendance, there was a risk of a lone wolf or even someone from the “ultra right” committing an act of terrorism. If that is true, East Hamptoners beware: your town does not have a counterterrorism unit.Yet. 44

ECO-CHIC The architects at Manhattan’s Leroy Street Studio have designed several Hamptons projects with the environment in mind. Their Cube House in Westhampton Beach was “conceived of as a floating cube perched on timber piles, hovering over the wetlands.” Located in a flood zone, the structure needed to be raised 11 feet above grade on thin stilts. At Shore House, a private villa in North Haven, they embedded part of the house into the hill, thus improving the property’s insulation and energy efficiency. A cedar-clad retreat in Westhampton Beach was raised on timber piers to avoid flooding instead of eliminating sensitive tidal wetlands. The folks at Leroy chose to restore native plant life to return the site to its natural state. LET THERE BE LIGHT Decommissioned in 1934, East Hampton’s Cedar Island Lighthouse has suffered at the hands of weather, fire and vandalism ever since. However, “Now, the group Friends of the Cedar Island Lighthouse and the Long Island chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society have plans to turn the county-owned structure into a two-room bed-andbreakfast,” according to the New York Times. Built in 1868, the handsome granite building was a beacon for whaling and other ships for decades. In August the Suffolk County Legislature approved $500,000 for renovations. Lee H. Skolnick Architecture and Design Partnership was granted $166,960 for the exterior work. Skolnick is hoping to get the commission for the interior too. If so, he told the Times: “We get the historic preservation, and then we get to do something really unusual inside that

GIMME SHELTER New regulations on Shelter Island that limit the number of days to rent out one’s house to 14 have elicited resistance from some locals. Six homeowners are crying poverty and claiming they might have to abandon their homes for lack of rental income. “I’m paralyzed with anxiety about how to survive the winter,” Julia Weisenberg, one of the homeowners behind a lawsuit to repeal the law, told the New York Post. But those in favor of restricting potential rental revelers have expressed concern that the quaint island might “be another Montauk, and we don’t want that.”

ARRIVEDERCI LA PARMIGIANA After almost half a century, Southamptonites’s favorite trattoria, La Parmigiana, is up for sale. Celestino Gambino, who founded the upscale pizzeria in 1974, died in 2010, but his family just listed the 5,500 square-foot building with Wald Real Estate Associates for $6.85 million. Restaurant rights are included in the sale. Not to fret, you can still chow down on the establishment’s eggplant parmesan until a sales goes through.

What took an hour and a half sitting in traffic returns to a more civilized 40-or-fewer minutes travel time. We can get reservations on Saturday nights again, even at the hottest spots. And our favorite fascinating people are less wary of being mobbed with selfie requests.

Speaking of celebs and selfies, wondering who is coming to this year’s Hamptons International Film Festival? Now in its 25th year, the annual event celebrates its silver anniversary at theaters and venues all over the East End from October 5 through October 9. Expected attendees include Jennifer Garner, who will be supporting the film “The Tribes of Palos Verdes,” Hamptons regular Alan Cumming, who stars in “After Louie,” and writer/ director/actor Rob Reiner, who helmed “LBJ” and will sit for an interview as part of the “Conversation With” series. “My Fair Lady” and yours, Julie Andrews will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this year. The stage and screen legend, whose performances in such classics as “Mary Poppins,”“The Sound of Music” and “Camelot” are even sweeter than a spoonful of sugar, will also sit for a Q&A this year with HIFF Co-Chairman Alec Baldwin after a screening of “Victor Victoria” in East Hampton. Ms. Andrews is also the co-creator and star of the new Netflix kids’ series “Julie’s Greenroom” as well as a collection of bestselling children’s literature. Her collaborator is none other than her daughter and 46

Of course the Hamptons provide the perfect backdrop for all sorts of cinema action. Just skimming the surface of current selections, there are two big tennis movies, a documentary and a romantic comedy all coming out that have direct ties here. “Borg vs. McEnroe” tells the story of the rivalry between Swedish tennis player Bjorn Borg and American net man John McEnroe, who just sold

his Southampton estate this summer. The film, which stars Sverrir Gudnason, Shia LaBeouf and Stellan Skarsgard, centers around the drama of the 1980 Wimbledon Championships. The sports drama “Battle of the Sexes” focuses on the sensational 1972 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which became the most watched televised sports event of all time when it aired. Starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, the film’s trailer was pre-screened here in the Hamptons as part of the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament Gala. Ms. King herself attended and participated in a Q&A with Michael Milken at David Koch’s Meadow Lane estate in Southampton, sharing stories of her life and clips from the film. We’ll also be getting some glimpses into filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s life, courtesy of Susan Lacy’s HBO documentary, which airs this month. The film features interviews with those who know the legendary East Hampton- and LA-based director best, including Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma and Tom Hanks. There’s sure to be some juicy inside info on his earlier works, including Montauk-inspired “Jaws,” and many of his other classic films. Lastly, there’s “Home Again,” which opened last month and stars Reese Witherspoon, who happened to spend a few vacay days out east this summer while screening a sneak peek of the film and catching a lobster bake. The romantic comedy also stars East Hampton’s Candice Bergen, and it marks the directorial debut of Hallie Meyers-Shyer, the daughter of Nancy Meyers, whose “Something’s Gotta Give” was set in Southampton.

FUNCTION MEETS STYLE INTERIOR DESIGNER MELANIE ROY’S BRIDGEHAMPTON HOME IS FAMILY FRIENDLY BY HEATHER BRYCE
I
t’s not an exaggeration to say that the 1998 design and building of Melanie Roy’s Bridgehampton house changed her life. The 15-year veteran of TV production with credits for work on such shows as Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, enjoyed the creative process so much that she switched careers afterward to become an interior designer. While she bought the one-acre parcel replete with “teeny” house while she was still single, by the time she was ready to start the project she was beginning a family. She designed the space with her children – her two sons are now 16 and 13 – very much in mind. In fact, now she is known for her “family-friendly” designs. “I have a passion and depth of knowledge for designing family homes that are truly functional and comfortable while also being beautiful and stylish,” she says.
Raised in NewYork City as the daughter of the well-known comedian and celebrated actor, Rodney Dangerfield, Melanie grew up in the arts. Following her successful career in television, she went back to school at the New York School of Interior Design. An internship at Cullman & Kravis – “I was the oldest intern in the world” — led to a job there and eventually to her own business, Melanie Roy Design. Back then, while looking for an architect she collected images of Hamptons houses she liked. When she met with who would become her architect, the late Michael Conway, she was amazed that many of her images were of homes he had designed.
The dramatically large entry hall, which opens into the living room and has views to the backyard and pool, doesn’t feel overly grand. A casual cane sofa lends just the right note of accessibility. She chose a blue and white palette to reflect the natural surroundings. The property is on Surfside Drive, across the street from the ocean. Dark stained oak floors and furnishings act as a foil to the neutral background. Upstairs, where there are natural vistas aplenty including views of the sea, she instituted a lighter palette to “let nature be the star.”

She desired traditional sensibility with an open and airy feel. “I wanted it to feel classic, like it had been here a long time, and I wanted to create beautiful memories in it.”

The blue and white motif meanders throughout the space in decorative items such as the many pieces of pottery – from stools to ginger jars -- she picked up in Hong Kong that create focal points in spots such as the living room mantelpiece. “I started with those as a foundation and built around them,” collecting other more functional pieces such as platters and bowls. One concession to life with kids was her use of durable outdoor fabrics on inside furniture, especially on the blueand-white pinstripe-upholstered dining chairs. For clients, she’s been known to use similarly smart fabrics on huge sectional sofas. Despite her lack of experience at the time, she knew instinctively that the color scheme, which continues with textiles, wine glasses, silverware, wallpaper and even the blue felt on a pool table, would create a flow between rooms. Reminders of the sea abound from shells to driftwood. For dinner parties the consummate hostess uses beach stones as place cards. “I absolutely love the ocean and wanted to reflect its beauty.” A marine theme is also apparent in such items as a custom mirror that hangs from boat cleats, a nautical cage light fixture and a porthole window that looks over the sea from the second story. The piece de resistance is a rusting anchor that greets visitors outside the front door. As much as she loves her home, if she were to update it she would have it reflect the style for which she has become known: a more contemporary look with a softer palette, pops of color and streamlined furniture. But as stylish as it would be, she would ensure that it would maintain its functionality. “I design so that everyone feels at home; I don’t want anyone to feel they can’t sit on a couch.” 58

“The quality you can achieve for a lower budget is so much greater than in years past,” says Scott Weinstein of Audio Den, a 40-plus year business in Lake Grove that services the Hamptons and Manhattan. “A $15,000 projector you can get now is performing like a $50,000 projector from three or four years ago. It’s incredible.”
“Home theaters are less about leather seats with cup holders and have become more sophisticated designer-y rooms.” - Martha Gundersen There have also been “huge leaps and bounds in accessibility,” he says. “Years ago installing a home theater was a several-day project; today you can do it in about a day.” While costs are coming down, some people are still spending a fortune on home theaters. “We just turned a basement space into a gaming area and home theater with a seating capacity of 20,” says Punit Chugh of Aman Developers, a high-end Bridgehampton building company. “It’s almost like walking into a mini theater.” His clients spent more than a million
But with all the improvement in TV screen size and quality, do home theaters still need projection? The short answer is no. However, there is what Weinstein calls a “video emotion” factor. The larger the screen, the more your body reacts emotionally to the image. For full impact, he says, you need a 120-inch screen and front projection. When Hamptonites started building home theaters a decade or so ago, the decoration of rooms was cinematically driven. But that Odeon style is fast disappearing. The folks at Farrell Building Company have transitioned from those “opulent reds and leathers,” says company spokesperson, Sara Goldfarb. Instead, the palette of home theaters mesh with that of the entire house. “We’re using nature-driven colors: beiges, grays. So, it’s no longer like you’re walking into a cave.”
Stevens, agrees. “Home theaters are less about leather seats with cup holders and have become more sophisticated designer-y rooms decorated with Venetian plaster, molding, comfy couches and tables to put drinks on.” Walls are soundproof, but they are covered with “the most expensive fabrics.” Gundersen references a home theater in her listing at 70 Matthews Lane in Bridgehampton, a $12 million house by celebrated interior designer James Michael Howard. The walls are cushioned with velvet, “not only for soundproofing but also for effect,” she says. “The white faux couches are probably the most comfy couches ever.” There’s also a fridge and wine cooler for all comestible needs. And, naturally, all the latest top-of-the-line equipment. “When home theaters first started I wasn’t attracted to them, but now they’ve become more like living rooms surrounded by beauty and style instead of Bob’s Furniture.”
That doesn’t mean they have gotten rid of all of home theater’s bells and whistles. Farrell still installs soundproof walls, a bar and, of course, a popcorn machine. And there’s still tiered stadium seating. But they’ve added luxe elements such as big pillows. “Even the chairs are more relaxed. PAINTER DON CHRISTENSEN MARRIES PRETTY COLORS WITH MODERNIST FORMALISM
I
n retrospect, painter Don Christensen was always headed for a career in art despite not embracing it as a career till midlife. As a kid, growing up in a small Nebraska farm town, he was always the artistic son while his older brother was the athletic one. “I was always drawing,” he says. But the family dynamics changed and his brother became an artist first. And quite a successful one. When his brother attended art school, Christensen says: “It really pissed me off. I didn’t want to compete with my brother.” Instead he became a professional musician, playing in several bands, the last of which was the Raybeats, a neo-surf rock combo, according to Wikipedia. “We were making a living,” he says. The group was touring and cutting record deals, however, it disbanded in 1984. “There we were in our late thirties running around the country in Econoline vans playing rock ‘n’ roll for kids. “We just kind of looked at each other and said, let’s call it a day.”
Indeed, one was one of the last individual arts fellowships awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. He also held his first solo show at the Douglas Drake Gallery on 57th Street in the city, where he displayed his first go at painting crosses. The show generated wide recognition.
wood he collected at building sites. The artist still paints predominantly found objects, but now he haunts yard sales on the lookout for step stools and tables. His initial work on tables didn’t work for him till he had a brainstorm and hung the tables on the wall sideways by the legs, making the tabletop the canvas. He believes that mixing such whimsical pieces gives his “Modernist formalism, what they used to call ‘high art,’ more of a folky outsider thing. I think that is the attraction for me.” He showed several of these at a group show at the Parrish Art Museum alongside works by such artists as Laurie Anderson and Keith Sonnier.

At age 40 he opened a recording studio and “started making paintings for the fun of it,” he says.“Next thing I know I’m doing it after work and on weekends.” Things changed for him after the summer of 1990, which he spent in East Hampton for the first time. He returned to the city that fall, then turned around and came back for good.
His intent was to explore the relationships of colors. “But I wanted to do it simply -- cross two lines with two different colors and put them on a background of another color; that sets up a lot of possibilities.” One reviewer wrote that the paintings resembled musical chords, which makes a lot of sense considering that Christensen “looks for harmony” is his compositions. “There is a single blend of sound even though you can see the individual notes.”

Perhaps what makes Christensen’s works stand out the most is his use of highly saturated bright pigments, or what he calls “up colors.” His choice of colors is “totally intuitive,” he says. “My color theory is that no color exists on its own, only in relation to other colors.” More than an intellectual exercise, his use of color enables him to enter a creative zone. “If you want to put red paint on something, go with it,” he says. “That sounds like it’s easy but it’s not, especially after you’ve been working awhile. You start thinking about other art you’ve seen, your audience and the market – or even mowing the lawn. You have to stay with that pure place of impulse to do something that’s not married to any reason to be doing it. It’s hard to maintain that state of mind.You have to trust yourself.”

WARMING TREND EXTEND YOUR ENJOYMENT OUTDOORS INTO AUTUMN

ummer’s in the rear view mirror now, but there’s still plenty of fine weather ahead of us. Autumn is a golden season here on the East End. For my money, it’s the best season of the year. The summer crowds are gone, but the weather is still mild, with many warm days under blue skies and without summer’s heat and humidity. It’s a great time to enjoy your deck or patio—just relaxing, barbecuing and dining with family or entertaining friends, by day or after the sun goes down. As the weather cools, adding a source of heat to your outdoor living space can extend the time you can comfortably use it. Here are some ways to do it.
fueled by natural gas or propane. Fire pits can be made of steel, copper, or cast stone, sometimes set within a decorative frame. Some of them come with screens to prevent embers from blowing around, and caps to cover the firepit when it’s not in use. Fire pits can be made more permanent parts of the landscape, too, built of stone or brick in a part of the landscape farther from the house. They can be built into a patio either atop the ground or sunken, with surrounding seating making it an inviting hangout place to relax with friends or family. Add some landscape lighting along the way, and you’ve got a delightful nighttime getaway.
For occasional al fresco meals or evenings on the deck spending time with friends or family, a fire pit or chiminea can fill the bill. If you like to entertain and want to use your patio well into autumn as the air grows crisper, a patio heater—or several if you’ve got a big space—may better fill your needs. Veteran beachgoers and campers all know about the homemade “burn barrel,” which is often half of an old metal drum that contains a campfire. Kids love to toast marshmallows over the fire. But there are lots of other better looking options for having an outdoor fire, whether you want to kick back and watch the flames at night, or warm up your patio space so you can enjoy it later into fall. The most basic kind of outdoor fireplace is a fire pit, which can be as simple as a wide, shallow, fireproof dish set on a metal stand about a foot high. Some fire dishes burn real wood, others have a stack of faux logs lit with a gas jet or

chimineas don’t. Instead of wood, they burn propane or natural gas, and most of them have a shutoff valve. Some are electric and need an outdoor outlet to operate. For a smaller space you can consider a wallmounted electric heater. These units produce more concentrated infrared heat. Electric heaters produce no odor or open flame. Another benefit is that there’s not much maintenance needed—there is no tank to fill, no moving parts, though you do need an outdoor electrical outlet. They are available in a range of wattages, depending on the space you want to warm. Outdoor heaters powered by propane or natural gas produce a good amount of heat as soon as you light them. You can find them in small tabletop units that warm a space around an outdoor table or seating area. Or you could place several of them around your patio to warm a large space.
Another kind of outdoor heater, the charming chiminea, looks like a potbellied clay or metal oven with a tall neck. Some are modern-looking and made of steel. Some can convert to grills. The potbellied models fit comfortably into relaxed, informal settings. The sleeker metal types fit better into modern environments. Build a small campfire in your chiminea and enjoy.
Upright units, the type most often seen in outdoor areas of restaurants or bars, take several different forms. Most common are upright units that include a tall pole connecting the base to the heating unit above, which has a hat-shaped shield to reflect the heat downward. Other heaters are pyramid-shaped and are designed to produce heat over more of their surface area. Higherend heaters include sleek, sophisticated designs with ceramic burners that are billed as high efficiency.
If you’re more serious about making the most of your patio for as long as you can before the weather turns seriously chilly, a patio heater might be what you need. Patio heaters have safety features that fire pits and

magansett acupuncturist Sandy Geehring Foster of SGF Acupuncture enjoys seeing her Lyme patients walk out of her infrared sauna with their pain significantly reduced, if not completely eradicated. “Besides reducing pain, it gets rid of spirochetes and strengthens the body,” she says.
While it’s still considered a pioneering modality, there are plenty of emerging studies touting the apparatus’s health benefits. A session in one — where the temperature reaches 140 to 160 degrees — is said to relieve such ailments as rheumatoid arthritis, joint stiffness, muscle spasms, edema, soft tissue injury, sciatica and even cancer. “There have been accolades from cancer organizations,” says Foster.
“The whole body just goes ‘ahh.’ ” After prodigious research, Foster chose a Sunlighten sauna for her practice. “Unlike a lot of other brands it doesn’t use glue that can emit toxins when heated,” she says. It is also full spectrum, meaning it emits near, mid and far infrared wavelengths, which each penetrate to different layers of skin, fat and muscle. “It activates the immune system near and causes cellular regeneration the deeper you go.” It is also an effective detoxifier, loosening toxins deep inside tissues and encouraging them to exit the body through perspiration. Infrared saunas, which employ radiating heat, are considered more effective that regular saunas that work more like ovens — heating outside the body rather than inside. Treatments are said to be effective against cancer because, according to Irvin Sahni, MD, the infrared radiation is harmful only to malignant cells, while healthy cells are immune to the heat. Such saunas are used in some German hospitals to reduce side effects of chemo. Foster has successfully treated patients with everything from eczema to mercury poisoning. But illness is not the only reason to be treated by infrared. “Athletes use it for muscle recovery so they can run faster,” says

My “job” is to “be like seaweed.” So explained Watsu practitioner Peter Balestrieri of (a)LIGHT Sag Harbor. I am immersed in his beautiful stone pool, which is covered by a lofty wood and glass ceiling. The water temperature is 96 degrees and there is no smell of chlorine, the soothing water kept hygienic by an ionizer. Balestrieri gently takes hold of me and lightly swirls me around as all but my face is enveloped by the warm water. It’s an intimate dance as he holds me while rocking me softly. The feeling of being supported while being stretched and cradled is distantly familiar. I haven’t felt this safe since I floated in my mother’s amniotic fluid. I am kelp. Or possibly wakame. I play the role of seaweed well. “My style of aquatic bodywork” he says, “is water shiatsu. t their Greek Revival retreat, the worldrenowned yogis—whose full schedules keep them on the road up to 200 days a year—have found a true respite from the hustle and bustle of their busy lives. But the house is more than a “recharging station” at which to cultivate Zen moments, the peaceful place is also a key gathering spot for friends and family, plus it’s not too far from their workplace and home away from home at Yoga Shanti. “It’s a three-minute walk into the village but still a sanctuary where you can immerse yourself,” says Mr. Yee, whose Gaiam/Living Arts yoga instructional videos in the early 1990s helped to catapult the practice into the American mainstream. “It’s a place where we can sit and enjoy the haven of our own backyard, which is full of nature, even though it’s right in the bustling village. His most immediate go-to is the well used Vibiemme Domobar espresso machine. “It’s the coffee maker, I’m a coffee guy,” Mr. Yee proclaims with a smile. “When you drag yourself out of bed … That’s the first place I’m headed.” “It’s smell, the grinding, the pressing, the whole morning ritual,” he continues, adding that he likes to enjoy the java morning, noon and night, and even thinks about the very first sip of joe the next day as he’s preparing for bed in the evening. also worked together to help create Urban Zen’s Integrative Yoga Therapist Program, Donna Karan’s worldwide initiative. So it comes as no surprise that there’s a special room in the house for yoga. It’s upstairs on the second floor and is dedicated to the practice, as well as for meditating. It can be practiced pretty much anywhere, Ms. Saidman says, pulling up the corner of a handknotted floor covering in the living room and revealing a surprise. “There are mats tucked under practically every rug in the house,” she reports, smiling at her husband. “Just in case the mood strikes.”

COPENHAGEN: THE LAND OF GREAT DANES THE “HAPPIEST CITY IN THE WORLD” IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL.
T
he capital of Denmark, which has itself earned the top spot as a country in the United Nations’ “World’s Happiness Report,” is a magical place that’s worthy of multiple visits. Home to three quarters of a million people, the city is practically Utopian. Clean, green, friendly and architecturally stunning, the former Viking fishing village dates back to the 10th Century and is home to sights galore, due to its deeply rich history, ingenious design and healthy cosmopolitan flair. There’s plenty to see on dry land in this superwalkable city (we clocked 30 miles in our first three days without breaking a sweat) but it’s the surrounding elements that elevate it to the sublime. Visually, Copenhagen’s aquatic topography is a dream. Some of the recommended highlights include the Nordhavn harbor, which is so clean that people swim there even though it’s a home to ferry berths and a marina, and the man-made Amager Strandpark, a 4.6-mile artificial island and public park along the Øresund, or “the Sound,” a strait which forms the Danish-Swedish border; the canals of Nyhavn and Christianshavn, aka Christiana or “Freetown;” and The Søerne— Sortedam, Peblinge and Sankt Jørgens—three artificial rectangular lakes that curve around the western margin of the city center. There’s also a whole lot to wow, architecturally speaking. Marrying a substantial past with the thoughtfulness of modern Danish design, Copenhagen manages to embrace its history while still allowing plenty of space to move forward into the future. Here, Renaissance, neoclassical, rococo and baroque meet contemporary

in the most delightful and thoughtful ways, ushering in a new golden age and high-water benchmark for all who appreciate artistry in urban planning and design in general. The cleanliness and friendliness of the city are also quite notable. It’s bustling and busy but so unblemished, ecologically advanced and efficient that one can wear white pants days in a row without getting a speck of dirt on them—even on public transportation, which is plentiful and well used. In fact, Copenhagen’s high environmental standards are so ingrained that the city plans to be carbon-neutral by 2025.

Fewer than a third of the population bothers with cars here at all and the lack of automobiles is refreshing, as the Danish who live in Copenhagen bike and walk everywhere. As a result, there is virtually no smog, grit

or grime anywhere. And, since most everyone is on foot for two wheels, the convivial bonds are great as well. Literally, every single time we cracked open a map, a friendly and helpful native Dane appeared in seconds offering directions and assistance—and always in English. There’s so much to do and see here. Some of the more memorable sights in Copenhagen include: Christiana—a green/hippie-type squatters’ neighborhood where practically anything goes, except photos; Nyhavn, which is positively gorgeous and has top picks of restaurants and nightlife; Papirøen, aka “Paper Island, which is home to street food and contemporary art; the Copenhagen Opera House; the National Gallery; Round Tower observatory, which is practically ancient and also lots of fun to walk up; the Strøget, the retail district featuring a long street filled with shops; Tivoli Gardens and amusement park; “The Little Mermaid” statue (remember, Hans Christian Andersen lived here); the Amalienborg and Christiansborg palaces; and Rosenborg Castle and gardens, to name but a few. And lastly but certainly not least, there’s the famous hygge, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. Translating roughly into “coziness” and pronounced as “hooga,” it’s all about contentment and well-being. Thankfully, Copenhageners don’t seem to give a Kroner (the currency used there) about fancy airs. The people who live here relish the truly great things in life: friends, family, community, nature, work-life balance, good food, timeless design and quality time. Isn’t that grand!
