TABLE FOR TWO BY THE SEA, PLEASE BY HANNAH SELINGER
For a perfect sunset, head directly to The Halyard Restaurant, which faces the Long Island Sound. The restaurant, which is part of the Sound View Hotel, offers a light-filled dining room and a deck overlooking the water, as well as locally sourced fish and produce from the East End’s superlative farmers and fishermen. Start with a tomato and burrata salad, showcasing the North Fork’s own tomatoes, before moving on to a piece of grilled Montauk swordfish, served with olive oil-poached tomato, fennel Castelvetrano olives, and chives. For dessert, take in a sunset that only a view of the water can provide.
Right next door, at the Port of Egypt Marina, find another seaside gem: chef-owner Tom Schaudel’s A Lure Chowder House & “Oyster-ia.” Open for dinner, this seafood-centric restaurant with a view offers plenty of options, including a seafood bar to start, with a classic shrimp cocktail, a yellowfin tuna poke, littleneck clams on the half shell, and local oysters with a cucumber verjus mignonette. House specials also include beer-battered cod, littleneck clams with bucatini and a garlic-white wine sauce, macadamia-coconut-crusted flounder, and pan-roasted Scottish salmon with ratatouille.
NORTHFORKREALESTATESHOWCASE.COM12 EAST END EATS
Equally under-the-radar is Aquebogue’s On the Docks, a restaurant tucked into Meeting House Road, with its own transient dock (you can pull up by boat, though you’ll need to call ahead for availability). On weekdays between 4 and 7, the restaurant holds a happy hour, but you can get the appetizers, sandwiches and burgers, and larger plates any day of the week. Come for the fried seafood platter — it comes with flounder, shrimp, and scallops — and stay for the view overlooking the Lighthouse Marina and Meetinghouse Creek. For a farm-to-table experience with a view of the water, head directly to Waypoint Restaurant, in Southold, which faces Mill Creek and the Peconic River. Food is locally grown when possible, and dishes are inspired by Long Island. The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner. A petite raw bar offering local oysters and clams starts things off.
The Halyard Outdoor Dining Photo: Read McKendree
Among the standout entrées: the poached local fluke, served with a summer vegetable velouté and parsley cream; a grilled skirt steak, with a Romesco sauce, charred broccolini, and a chimichurri; and a lobster ravioli, with shrimp, scallops, tomatoes, and a Cognac cream sauce.
THE NORTH FORK’S MOST DELICIOUS SEASIDE EATS
If your meal on the North Fork requires a view of the water, well, we understand. The spirit of the sea is everywhere on the East End. To dine on the water is an unparalleled privilege. Check out these delicious seaside spots, and get yourself a table, post-haste. In Greenport, Porto Bello offers an outdoor patio overlooking the marina. Sit beside the water and indulge in an appetizer or two that speaks to the environment. The restaurant has an entire category of “seafood starters” that capture the mood, including tuna tartare, midnight clams casino, lobster salad, local oysters on the half shell with a mignonette, clams on the half shell, shrimp cocktail, calamari frito, saffron mussels in broth, coconut curry mussels, and a seafood tower called the seafood oasis. Located within Safe Harbor’s Greenport Marina, Porto Bello is a hidden gem that allows a private view of the water with none of the summer crowds.

North Fork | East Marion. You remember the feeling. You’re on holiday on the coast of some Caribbean isle or on the cliff of a European town overlooking the Mediterranean. Each morning when your head leaves the pillow you know you are on vacation with broad expanses of water dotted with boats and vistas of other shores. Much closer to home, only 100 miles from Manhattan, you can recreate that feeling each and every day when you develop this very private, nearly 12 acre waterfront, meadow-like parcel composed of two 5.7 acres lots spanning 350’ along the North Fork’s Long Island Sound. With all permitting work done on each lot, a savvy buyer would save hundreds of thousands of dollars and months of waiting to begin construction of a significant house, waterside pool, tennis court and even a guest house for those who would undoubtedly flock to help you enjoy your grand, new estate. The low, but stable bluff, provides easy access down a gentle pebbled path to the beach from where you’ll enjoy an abundance of aquatic activities while conversation and laughter will resound around the inevitable nighttime beach fires. At night, go into town for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants overlooking Shelter Island or head to one of the many vineyards for a wine tasting. Participants are all local, including marching bands, bagpipes, fire departments, social clubs, American Legion halls, Girls Scout and Boy Scout troops. After a covidcaused hiatus for the past 2 years, Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program hopes to return to the festival as the sponsor of “The Merry Merfolk Parade”. This paradewithin-a-parade serves to raise awareness of the shellfish and habitat restoration work of CCE Marine Program’s Back to the Bays Initiative. Come show your support of our local waters dressed as your favorite sea creature, mermaid or pirate while helping to draw attention to the importance of the marine ecosystem. There’s an awards ceremony following the parade, with prizes for best costume and other categories. For more details visit eastendseaport.org

If a garden blooming in stages tracks the seasons of spring, summer, and fall, so, too, can the potted plants of your patio. Bring in earthier tones and heartier plants, which you can find at some of the South Fork’s local nurseries. (Fowler’s Garden Center, in Southampton, and Wittendale’s Florist, in East Hampton, are two good places to start.)
As the days grow shorter, warm up your outdoor space with light, light, and more light. Decorative lanterns — look to the Antiques Center Southampton for pieces that could use a revival — can hold candles and LED lights for a toasty fall glow. West Elm’s new standing heater lamp looks more like an indoor lamp than like an unattractive patio heat lamp. It’s an aesthetically pleasing way to add both warmth and character to your steadily cooling outdoor space. Tabletop fire pits — you can find these at Food52, on Amazon, and even at Williams-Sonoma, in Bridgehampton — are another great way to add light and heat to your transitional space.
ust because fall is right around the corner does not mean that patio season is over. Transitioning your outdoor space for the cooler months requires a little bit of forward thinking, as well as an eye for design. Here are some of our best ideas for converting your outdoor space to a paradise for fall weather.
DESIGNJ
Embrace Textiles Change the feel of your space with the addition of textiles. Outdoor-friendly rugs are a great way to warm up patio spaces and make them transition-ready. Ruggable, a company known for its machine-washable rugs, produces a collection of outdoor rugs in a variety of colors, styles, and sizes — their largest outdoor rug is 9 x 12, appropriate for a large exterior space. At the end of the fall season, the rug “cover” can be removed from the pad and placed in the washing machine, in preparation for next season. Complement your fall-ready rug with other warmthinducing textiles, like indoor-outdoor blankets, lush pillows, and throws for an environment that says “cool nights” like no other.

FALL
Multi-colored chrysanthemums, which can stand up to cool evenings, are inexpensive and can help transition a space, but if you want to add other unique pops of color, consider aster, which runs in the blue family, or coneflower — also known as Echinacea — which blooms in pink, orange, red, yellow, and even white. Purple fountain grass can add height and depth to an outdoor space, as well as adding a distinct autumn feel. Use glazed ceramic planters to bring even more color and texture into your transitioning space. Think Cozy If you have the space, consider integrating an outdoor den — yurts, tents, and pergolas are perfect for fall weather, and they can be customized to suit your patio needs. Temporary structures like this can be purchased online, at places like Amazon. Then decorate them to the nines with fur throws and lush pillows from places like Hildreth’s Home Goods, in Southampton, Serena & Lily Design Shop, in Wainscott, and Homenature, also in Southampton. Stack pillows on the floor along with throws, LED candles, lanterns, and anything else that suits your fancy. When the fall nights hit, grab a glass of wine and head to your indooroutdoor respite.

Considered the gateway to the North and South Forks, the Township of Riverhead offers rare contrasts: New York’s most productive and diverse farm-based region surrounded by waters known to boaters globally, the Great Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound, either accessing the Atlantic Ocean. A Riverhead hamlet, Aquebogue is approximately midway between two charming village Main Streets, Riverhead’s and Greenport’s, boasting the North Fork’s best dining, lodging, and specialty shopping. In between, the North Fork’s many vineyards are recognized for their world-class production and welcoming tasting rooms, indoors and out. If a more commercial demand must be met, Route 58’s national department and chain stores are a short trip further west. Sound Avenue is alive with newly established agri-businesses or those managed by families for generations. Looking north from Sound Avenue, beyond the farms and tree line, are Long Island Sound’s breath-taking bluffs and beaches. Church Lane is quieter, ending and beginning with two of the North Fork’s oldest churches, connecting Sound Avenue and Main Road - where the four parcels, 71.80 acres lie, currently fully cultivated and income producing: 12.30 DRI acres fronting on Sound Avenue, abutting the 59.50 DRS acres fronting on Church Lane, all located within Riverhead Town’s Agriculture Protection Zone (APZ).
