Regional Monthly Awards SHPE News! Leader of the Month – Marco Yepez Marco is currently a senior majoring in Industrial Engineering at the University of Central Florida. Leading one of the largest chapters of the nation, Marco has gone above and beyond to ensure that his chapter and his members succeed. During his term as the SHPE president of the University of Central Florida, Marco and his executive board have organized the first SHPE Jr. Mini Conference in the region which motivated numerous high school students to pursue STEM fields; his chapter also hosted Noche de Ciencias and many workshops that range from professionalism to self-defense classes. Marco also had the initiative to organize the regional camping retreat taking place at the end of the month. Thank you Marco for your efforts and exceptional leadership!

Chapter of the Month – University of North Carolina at Charlotte The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has managed to surpass their greatest membership in the history of their chapter and overcomed many challenges for being such a young chapter with a very low Hispanic population; however, these challenges do not prevent UNCC to be very successful with over 50 members strong and 40 paid members. UNCC is also working with other Carolina chapters and the current leadership is looking into taking sub-regional positions next year. Keep up the good work!

Member of the Month – Ricardo Aleman Ricardo is a Junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the Florida State University. He’s been actively involved in his chapter and is currently the external vice-president at SHPE-FSU. Marinella Piñate I was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, but for the past 9 years Orlando has become my hometown. I am a 4th year Industrial and Systems Engineering student at the University of Florida, as well as the 2011-2012 SHPE Jr. Representative for region 7. I have been actively involved with the University of Florida’s SHPE chapter for the past four years, and I am also a mentor for the Institute of Industrial Engineering, as well as a member of INROADS. Some of my initial goals as the region 7 student representative include but are not limited to: • Increasing the number of members in our region by collaborating with each chapter’s recruiting campaign, but more importantly, increase the number of active members in each chapter and the region by developing strong bonds with the members and thus motivate them to be part of something bigger that would help them develop themselves personally and professionally. • Strengthening the SHPE Jr. Initiatives so that by the end of 2012-2013 every university chapter is sponsoring a SHPE Jr. Chapter. • Increase the presence of professional chapters in our region and regional events. As I mentioned, this list are my initial goals and initiatives for the region. I truly believe I have the commitment and motivation necessary be the next region 7 RSR, and I am confident that if I become your next RSR this list will grow and we will make region 7 not one of the best regions, but the best region in the nation. I look forward to working with every single one of you! To view a complete biography and the list of goals, please visit Marinella’s fan page Here

Gabriel Arab Gabriel Arab was born on September 11th, 1991, in Miami Beach. He is CubanArgentinian and grew up his entire life in South Florida. Since elementary school, he had been excited about airplanes and anything space related. Now entering his fourth year in mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida, Gabriel is as excited about working with the space industry as he is passionate... About SHPE. Gabriel has been involved with SHPE-UF since his freshman year, taking on several leadership roles since, and now holds the Georgia Sub-Regional Student Representative position. Strong bonds were formed between the region and him while working with his regional team and gaining momentum in member morale. He believes he cannot leave the region in the hands of just anyone, and will do everything he can to support all of the productive initiatives in place, or planned to be in place next year. For example, he has been working on a regional corporate package, aimed at increasing funds for regional events through corporate partnership on a grander scale than just one chapter - while leaving existing chapter sponsorship as they are. Another is the networking completed with many professional members and representatives that have given him an inlet of knowledge and experience to join in on any event. Thanks to this, Exeqpath and the Atlanta professional chapter will also be joining us at the Region 7 Leadership Retreat, and there are hopes of more student-professional chapter interaction in the near future. As a member of the region who sees how many chapters are run, from small to top 5, Gabriel Arab is your candidate for Region 7 Student Representative. He believes in the mission and vision of SHPE and will always put the region's best interest as top priority. For more information, please visit Gabriel’s fan page Here
