-TOPIC SELECTION -BRAINSTORMING

01

-CONCEPT EXPLORATION

IDEA DEVELOPMENT As this module entails us to develop a strong concept for a brand, it was vital to go through intense brainstorming sessions to help us pick an appropraite topic for the first stage.

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

TOPIC SELECTION

Our very first task was to list out some of our likes and dislikes, in order to get started with our creative process. This was from a more personal point of view.

-LIKES

04

05

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

I jotted down associations with my likes and dislikes, scribbling down any terms that popped into my mind relating to the keyword.

-DISLIKES

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Noting down the problems in the world got us thinking about global issues and how graphic design can play a role in its solution.

SOME PROBLEMS TO SOLVE

06

07

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

TOPIC SELECTION 3

Merging various aspects within my brainstorming, I came up with few general topics to further explore.

FEW CHOSEN TOPICS

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

08

FIVE TOPICS FOR INVESTIGATION 1. The revival of native language for children living in foreign countries Kids are forgetting their roots and traditions while living outside their hometown. Most of them are unfamiliar with their native language which plays a huge role in their upbringing. Accustoming them in this aspect will keep them in touch with their heritage. Teaching children won’t be such a strenuous task for parents with the introduction of an app for easy learning.

Based on class critique, I was asked to combine topics 1 and 2 into one solid concept about ethnicity and textiles

2. The disappearance of ethnic wear in today’s culture

3. The development of alternative forms of eco fabrics

Ethnic attire is becoming unnoticed in multicultural cities due to modernisation. Regaining popularity of traditional attire can help spread awareness of its importance in society, more specifically with kids of this century. An event organised by a support group can help spread awareness of the importance of your roots, while bringing together immigrants alike.

The production of fabrics like cotton and polyester pollute the environment. To promote sustainable fashion, they can be made by materials that would otherwise go to waste such as food products which is proven to be the future of the textile industry. Merchandise to promote the innovation and an event demonstrating te production of such fabrics will help develop a liking towards it.

4. Child labour in the fashion supply chain

5. The lack of a role by elders in daily society

Certain fashion houses engage children with work in their garment and textile factories. Improvement in such unethical practices and mistreatment of these underaged workers is imperative so as to obtain better working conditions in poor countries. A campaign to prevent child labour will hopefully stand as an initiative to factory owners.

The elderly often feel helpless and devalued due to their weak health and abilities. Positive encouragment regardless their age will enhance their self-esteem and worth by making them feel young at heart. Activities for the elderly and motivation through interaction with each other will keep them occupied and increase their self-confidence.

09

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

BRAINSTORMING WALL Fusing my topics 1 and 2, I carried out this brainstorming session to further explore my options.

BEFORE

AFTER

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Brainstorming with opposite pair of keywords helped dive into different aspects under my chosen topic. Relating to ethnicity and culture, I chose these specific terms. The process of mind-mapping gave me different directions to think about.

10

11

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

THREE TOPICS FOR INVESTIGATION 1- Parents’ responsibility to teach their native language to kids Do parents find it difficult to bring up their kids with their mother tongue? An app that makes educating young children a fun and easy experience where teaching a new language doesn’t seem like a task and the organisation of an event to make traditions a part of their lifestyle. 2- Lack of touch in children living away with their roots How many kids these days speak their mother tongue and are aware of their culture? A user friendly app where children can learn their language and culture through a pen pal living in their hometown. Photographs, videos and emails can be shared. For a better experience, other than a video chat, kids can spend a week at their pen-pal’s place similar to an exchange program. 3- Unpatriotic immigrants Are you ashamed of your culture and what others around you would think? A series of posters to a cultural event to feel at home, eat authentic food, sing and dance to your native music while meeting others alike. Enrol in language classes and join your country’s community for regular meet ups and celebrations during festivals. Merchandise will be available promoting each ethnicity.

FINAL TOPIC:

For a stronger topic, I integrated textiles with ethnicity and concluded with: The revival of traditional textiles by rural Vietnamese artisans

BRAND IDENTITY

BRAND NAMES I listed down possible brand names keeping in mind the jist of my concept hence including elements of textiles, ethnicity, tradition and craft.

BRAND IDENTITY

LOGO DEVELOPMENT I started out with logotypes for HomeSpun and Reweave, trying to include script with clean type.

20

I developed typographic and iconographic sketches as solutions for potential brand names, incorporating an element of weaving in majority. The fine lines depcit the warps and wefts of yarns being woven.

HomeSpun perfectly and directly summed up my organisation however, I was told it’s not memorable enough and maybe a little too safe.

SA PA, VIETNAM HMONG HILL TRIBE CROSS STITCH ZIPPER POUCH

tribalthreads TEXTILES BY CREATIVE NATVES

At TribalThreads we are proud of our collaboration with the Hill Tribes of Vietnam. As we’ve grown closer to our partners we’ve come to learn more about the different types of fabrics available and their origins and history. The magic they are able to create when they transform what was once an object for everyday use into a piece of art is what inspired us to try and promote their work to the world. The women who created these amazing textiles started learning this art form at a very young age where skills are passed down mother to daughter. With this product, the Hmong Hill Tribes essentially took their intricately hand embroidered vintage skirt and repurposed it into a beautiful zipper pouch. The cross-stitching needlework and indigo-dyed batik technique are authentic to the Hmong textile traditions.
