Since World War II, the impressive growth of the manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the nation from a largely rural economy into one primarily industrial and urban. The 1989 US-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (which includes Mexico) touched off a dramatic increase in trade and economic integration with the US. Given its great natural resources, skilled labor force, and modern capital plant, Canada enjoys solid economic prospects. Top-notch fiscal management has produced consecutive balanced budgets since 1997, although public debate continues over the equitable distribution of federal funds to the Canadian provinces. Exports account for roughly a third of GDP. Canada enjoys a substantial trade surplus with its principal trading partner, the US, which absorbs 80% of Canadian exports each year. Canada is the US's largest foreign supplier of energy, including oil, gas, uranium, and electric power. During 2007, Canada enjoyed good economic growth, moderate inflation, and the lowest unemployment rate in more than three decades. GDP (official Exchange rate): $1.432 trillion (2007 est.) GDP (real growth rate): 2.7% (2007 est.) GDP (per capita – PPP): $38,400 (2007 est.) GDP Composition by sector: agriculture: 2.1% industry: 28.8% services: 69.1% (2007 est.)

Education in Canada In 2003, 44% of Canada’s working-age population (those aged 25 to 64) had a college or university degree. This was the highest ranking among all 21 OECD countries. The United States was ranked second, at 38%, and Japan was third with 37%. Toronto residents hold more university degrees than any other city in the world. According to a recent research report by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, ‘Spending time abroad in a structured learning opportunity – from a few weeks to a semester or two – is one of the best ways for Canadian students to develop international skills and perspectives. A number of recent studies confirm the need for employees with the kind of skills gained through international experiences, including knowledge of a second or third language, intercultural competence, resiliency, flexibility, and an understanding of international business. Indeed, the skills outlined in the Conference Board of Canada’s checklist of employability skills are often those gained or enhanced through study abroad – and they’re also the kind of skills that improve the chances of finding a job.’ ‘Most importantly, employers stressed that they’d like to hire more graduates with foreign experience – but said that such people are hard to find in Canada.’

On a per capita basis, Canada spends 80 cents, Australia the equivalent of $9.07, Germany $3.02 and the United States $4.70 on federal international scholarship and exchange programs. This places Canada far behind other OECD countries in terms of sending students abroad to gain valuable international experience and knowledge.’ http://www.aucc.ca/_pdf/english/publications/reality_check/study_abroad_e.pdf
High Schools There are some hospitality programs beginning this September in the high school sector to prepare students for employment and further education opportunities. ‘The Ontario high school system is being transformed with new Specialist High Skills Majors that allow students to focus on the career path that matches their unique skills and interests, said Education Minister Sandra Pupatello today. "The McGuinty government is on the side of Ontario families who want the best public education for their children," said Pupatello at the District School Board of Niagara head office in St. Catharines. "That's why we are empowering students to customize their education so they can be better prepared for the future and reach their full potential." This September, Specialist High Skills Majors, part of the regular Ontario Secondary School Diploma, are being launched as pilots by 27 school boards. The majors are tourism and hospitality, construction, primary industries, manufacturing, and arts and culture.’ http://ogov.newswire.ca/ontario/GPOE/2006/08/31/c9806.html?lmatch=&lang=_e.html
Canadians Traveling Abroad Although there are no firm statistics on students studying abroad as a result of not needing to provide reasons for leaving the country, Canadians, by and large like to travel. ‘Canadians went globe-trotting at a record pace last year, taking an all-time high 6.2 million overnight trips to destinations other than the United States, and spending a record high $9.4 billion in the process. Nearly half of all Canadians going overseas, around 3.8 million, visited Europe. The United Kingdom was the most popular overseas destination as Canadian travellers made an estimated 899,000 visits there, up 19.1% from 2004.’ http://www.statcan.ca/Daily/English/060529/d060529b.htm

Swiss-Canadian Relations Swiss business: well established in Canada Most large Swiss companies have a presence in the Canadian market, with production facilities, sales centres or subsidiary companies. In 2005 Switzerland was Canada’s fifth largest foreign investor, after the US, the UK, France and the Netherlands. Close political cooperation Political relations are friendly and problem-free. The two countries collaborate often at multilateral level. At the United Nations they pursue similar objectives, for example in the fields of peace promotion or International Humanitarian Law. Both countries are members of the Forum of Federations – an international platform for federal states, as well as of the International Organisation of Francophonie within all of which they also work on joint initiatives. Consulate Locations Embassy: Ottawa ON Consulates: Vancouver, BC, Toronto, ON, Montreal, QC Student Exchange Programs Given the growing and dynamic global labour market, it becomes more and more important for students to gain abroad experience by studying in a foreign country. The mobility of students is promoted by Swiss and Canadian universities through various exchange programs, which offer Canadian students the possibility to study in Switzerland. Scholarships for Canadian students Through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (SFS), the Swiss Government grants foreign students university scholarships as well as scholarships for arts. University scholarships are intended for students who have graduated from university (postgraduates) and who will be able to deepen their education and undertake research work in the fields in which Swiss universities are particularly active. Youth Mobility Program On 6 February 2007, the Ambassador of Switzerland in Canada, Mr. Werner Baumann, and Mr. James Fox, Assistant Deputy Minister at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Bilateral Relations, have signed a Protocol Agreement aimed at facilitating the mobility of young skilled workers and students between Switzerland and Canada. The purpose of this agreement is to encourage the mobility of young Swiss and Canadians workers and students, offering them the opportunity to gain work experience abroad. http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/reps/nameri/vcan/canott.html
