BACKGROUND

BRIEF

Furniture Designer Ryan Smith has developed the idea of selling custom made flat pack furniture. Ryan’s work has a strong D.I.Y and hands on ethic. As part of his final year work he is going to batch produce his cube chair with a variety of custom screen printed artwork on it. This will be produced under the name of ‘Bamdoodle’.

This brief was to design and develop the brand of ‘Bamdoodle’ as well as design the packaging and instructional information that accompanies the product. The design must compliment Ryan’s hands on, playful and interactive motif.

BRIEF / BACKGROUND

RESEARCH

The research I conducted was on existing furniture makers and brands as well as skateboarding brands as this is the target market for the product. The identity needs to have lots of fun and personality and a bit of tongue in cheek tone of voice. However there needs to be a balance between professionalism/ reliability and fun/ personality.

CONCEPTS

These are the concepts that I talked through with Ryan, he thought that the first concept of incorporating a speech bubble would be most successful as it is simple and memorable. This would also work well with the doodles that Ryan will screen print onto the seats themselves.

Bamdoodle- a mix between bamboozle and doodle. Impossible shape route.

DEVELOPMENT

Building upon the hand rendered style that I pitched in the initial ideas I developed a more refined icon that gives a solid, branded identity to support the looser hand rendered illustrations that Ryan prints onto the furniture.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

05

Building on the chosen concept I extended the Bamdoodle logotype into a typeface that could be used for promotion. The tone of voice that accompanies the brand is cheeky and light hearted. The business card will be the same shape as the brand icon itself.
