Where to Start? The Type Factory offers a journey through the history of type, from it’s humble beginnings to the digital era we are currently living in. Beginning on Level 1 you can follow the rooms through history ending on the top fl oor where you can get to grips with the latest tech that is hitting the world of type. If you’re already a type master that can spot a comma in a bucket of apostrophes then here are some little puzzles to get you started!

Quick Look Desktop Publishing

A recent addition to the Type Factory is the exhibition on desktop publishing which is found on level 3. Desktop Publishing is a relatively recent addition to the scope of typography and design allowing anybodyu with a computer to write, design and publish books. When used skillfully, desktop publishing software can produce printed literature with attractive layouts and typographic quality comparable to traditional typography and printing. This technology allows individuals, businesses, and other organizations to self-publish a wide range of printed matter—from menus and local newsletters to books, magazines, and newspapers—without the sometimes-prohibitive expense of commercial printing.

Get your fingers inky on the Factory Floor! The Factory Floor is the interactive level of the Type Factory! Here you can get to grips with letterpress, discover how offset lithographic printing works, design a typeface out of cake and try screen printing kittens! There is also a fully interactive touch screen wall for where you can write whatever you want in your favourite typeface in 30072pt! There is also daily workshops running covering all aspects of typography and print so pop down and see what’s on!

Some highlight that you should keep in your diary are: Slab Sheriff: An insight into the popular typefaces used in cowboy films and why we associate them. 14/02/13 - 13/04/13 James T Edmonson: A talk from the contemporary type designer and a lesson in how to design type. 02/05/13 - 02/07/13 Letter Purse: A collection of high fashion typefaces that are also used to sell products that are at the other end of the spectrum and how this works. 21/08/13 - 02/09/13
