Aims Level 5 Chris Shuttleworth
Stemming from my summer research I have decided to redesign the existing World Toilet Day website to give it more of a serious edge. During my work on World Toilet Day it is often assumed that it is a joke topic and a made up day when, in fact, it is a day that intends to raise awareness of poor sanitation that affects 60% of the worlds population. From conducting research into existing websites, including sites of a similar nature and sites that I think are designed especially well, I have decided to simplify the WTD website and give it more of a ‘campaign’ image to communicate it’s purpose quickly.

Exsisting Website Level 5 Chris Shuttleworth
This is the existing World Toilet Day website. I think that it is instantly unclear what it is about and not many people will be willing to go out of their way to find out, the unprofessional logo also makes it seem like a fake and non-legitimate cause. There is also too much going on on each page and it is difficult to know where to look and what to do. The communication of the purpose of the day would benefit from each page being simplified and giving people quick information that they can choose to look further into if they want to. The colour scheme also gives the impression that everything is sorted and there isn’t really much of a problem and contributes to people not being aware that it is a legitimate cause.

Development Level 5 Chris Shuttleworth
When developing the website digitally I found that it wasn’t looking as official as it did on the scamp. This prompted me to make some changes such as the navigation bar links worked better being a dark grey that turns white when the user rolls over.

World toilet day focusses on improving sanitation and hygiene in the countries that need it most, where billions of people die as a direct result of not having a proper toilet. This is the home page of my website, I wanted to make it drastically different from what WTD have already (see ‘Existing Website design board) as this website doesn’t really communicate the purpose or severity of the situation. I am proposing an interactive home page in which the users cursor cleans the dirty image into something more similar to fig 3. This references how the user can personally help the situation and gives a quick idea of what the day is all about.

Site Pages Level 5 Chris Shuttleworth
I have tried to keep the pages of the website very simple to clearly communicate the the audience. I have decided to use a monochromatic colour scheme to set a consistent tone throughout, this also allows the social media icons to stand out, which is needed most at the moment- awareness of the situation.
