Whatare you doing,

A Design of Customized Automobile Factory in Urban Context
Urban automobile Factory Master Thesis Work, 2006
Urban Fairytail Memoir by U.A.F
Once upon a time, ‘Mr. Architecture’ had its own stories, and ‘Mr. Architecture’ and ‘Ms. Urban’ were happy then.
A dream to be taller Mr. Architecture had. People come into city more and more, he wanted to be loved by them and Ms. Urban.
Dreams come true, but...
People in city forget what Mr.Architecture really was.

Q: What Are You ?, and what are you doning here? No one know architecture does what, so people painted his face with something that is nothing to do with its function. Today, some architects even care only about the “elevation.”

More Floor, Same Technology? After the development of modern structure technology, just stacking up seems enough. It makes same architecture, and every building is just a combination of walls and slabs eventhough they all have different use, aim and function.
Architecture is more than slabs and walls. Ms.Urban’s complaints made Mr.Architecture worried so much, and its solutions are on architect’s hands. ‘Sloped production line’ needs flat place to work, and way to carry components.

that every product we buy is more than just a value of its price, and has its complex and valuable process. Mr. Architecture is happy to show people the process, and Ms. Urban never ask him what is he and what is he doing. They live happily ever after.
Perspective Elevation also can show how the building works.

What is Where is Who is
Asia?
Asia Front Express, competiton + Shin Min Jae, Bae Chun Hwan
Asia Front
Express
Competition, 2003 17
Asia Front Express This can be a small train or great network through Asia, and Passenger in the train or just passers-by can see it, feel it and think about it, whether they are Asian or not. Asia, the difference, the value is, now, everywhere.
18
19
What You Do is What Asia is
Transparent train will travel through Asia, and can give chance to Asian people to see themselves.
This is just flexible equipment to support your various activity.
Asia is not a territory or a citizenship. Asia is Asian people itself and they are influenced their nature, history and culture. Their daily life are well summarized when they are in this train. This train is adjustable to any circumstance,.
It’s hard to explain what is Asia or who is Asian in a word, because the difference comes from the ‘individual’ people. A project that can show difference - value - sholud be for a person, not for people or country and should not be placed at certain place or site. This negative definition give birth to rules : 1. a space for one person, 2. mobile site.

Then how
Station area
PRT based city
should be formed?
Airplane runway needs stright enough to take off with high speed, and curve to rotate with low speed. That is why airplane runway is formed. With its character of transportation, railroad, road and airplane runway is formed. PRT is very similar to airplane with its way of speeding up, down and rotating.
M In vast area of urban scale, Big volumes of programs, such as convention center, shopping mall and exhibition, are divided.

1. Highrise, Higher-rise
Higher-rise is only higher than highrise? Then, simply stacking more and newer technology to build up higher is all we need?

Absolute power : Superman Superman’s hometown, smallville is a farmland. His super powers are from somewhere over the space. He flies over the manhattan’s highrise, not between them. His ‘absolute’ power is the same as 20th century’s faith on highrise. He grew up where has no tall building, and fly from ground to sky. They both have super powers to save the world, but superman uses his own power to overcome gravity, and can fly without any other support.
Higher-rise Linking between buildings is making urban ‘eco system,’ and 3 dimensionin 21st century al city is next step of highrise.
Relative power : Spiderman Spiderman only can live in city. If he’s in farmland, what could he do? Spiderman only can fly with his web hanging between tall buildings. These super heroes have different birth place. His powers are only useful between highrises, even he lives up with pizza delivery service. Spiderman is real 21st century’s urban hero.
Highrise Absolute and independant powers against gravity made redundant rein 20th century sources and difficulties in communication. As buildings get higher, they get more obstructive.
30
Today’s urban context is always relative to other elements. However we still construct and design in 20ths way and, and 21ths cities, 21ths highrises and 21ths people are uncomfortable with these 20th.

Joint Study
Origami Study
3. Frame Work From paper, to frame, the most important part is the ‘real’ joint. Each Joint nees to rotate 360’ in Y plane and 270’ in Z axis
2. Origami Linking between the buildings should be temporary, because it uses building’s redundant structure. So temporary structure should be easy to be installed or removed. Folding structure study starts from Origami - paper play.

4. Transforming
5. Bigger and bigger. After Tectonic Studio (2003), this work was developed in Structure Class, 2005 As the project gets bigger, the goal change from deployable web to deployable arch.
1/200 Urban Scale Model
Bigger Joint is needed and it is re-engineered with possible material - woods - is used.
Triangled Green Module is Installed to make web as an hanging park. 1/50 Kinetic Model Phase 1 Phase 2
Since the ‘web’ is temporary installed, it is easy to move and remove. Hence, it shoud be smaller when it nees to be mobile with a affordable crane and other construction machines.

‘prime directive.’ Eco-oriented 3 dimensional landuse
Vegetation Oak trees and chestnut trees are to be preserved, for they play important roles for the overall vegetation. Pitch pine trees are also valuable. A hundreds year old zelkova tree and big ginkgo trees are worthy to remain, whereas widely spread peach orchard may be removed due to management concerns.
Topography of the Site Various components composing the topography are shown as mountain ranges, forests, farmlands, and time structure, and sub-categorized as follows: 1. Central Park , 2. Landscape Design, and 3. Community Park.
42

Ecological Landuse
Terrain Analysis :
Nature Use
Approximately 30% of overall site area is preserved with the original vegetation intact, which is over twice that of the 11.37% requirement. Old farmland, hills, and valleys survive here and there, placed freely in between artificial structures that will accommodate new lifestyle. These are seen as quilt patterns, and suggest how manmade structures should be arranged in the site. This is not to simply preserve old natural resources, but to make them as structural components for the new urban framework.

The park located in the center of the village will be one of the main nodes of the greater city which has a loop structure. It will be a prototype of future green patterns. Central park gives a sense of orientation to the village and becomes a natural backdrop for forming various communities.

2. Community Park A pedestrian axis and a green axis extended from the adjacent block are directly connected with the Heart Center. Library, cultural and religious facilities are off the pedestrian roads which are naturally formed along natural topography.
46
Preserved green area extends through the central park, and even reaches to the edge of the village to have green continuity with neighboring zones. Building bands and This village is a slow town where pedestrians enjoy abundant outdoor life through streets, paths, shelters, and plazas. pedestrian bands are mixed with green bands to create various interactions. The void and filled spaces weave the matrix of life with appropriate porosity.
