I notice that the type says “DIE so the dye is cast.

PAPER LIMITATIONS This project was about being restricted and limited to the use of simple white paper to create a typeface. We were also limited to using a scalpel only. No glue or tape were allowed. The images below shows a set of boxes with a cut out stencil typefaces. These show the 3D aspect of the type, creating depth then moving on to different ways of lighting the typeface from behind.

PAPER LIMITATIONS – CONTINUED The images below shows a range of techniques that include scratching the paper and cutting the paper. The lighting for each images varies from using a torch to fairy lights, I aim was to look at how you could cast light from behind and how well It would shines through. The outcome is quite interesting as you see the variations of the paper and how its been manipulated.

It is fun to explore movement and light using the cut out type

TYPOGRAPHY IN THE ENVIRONMENT The idea behind this work was about looking at different ways of getting typography into photography; this work was influenced by the Levi ‘Go Forth’ campaign by Jeff Luker. The images convey someone who is free-spirited and about having freedom. Looking at different ways of putting the type with the image. One example is using ink, food dye and bleach to create the writing then scanning it in and layering it over the image.

EVALUATION Having to represent the portfolio, has helped me to look at further ways to develop my work, and to simply go with and see how far I can take it. Originally, I found the project limitations quite hard to find lots of ideas, such as coming up with as many ideas as possible, but going further into it I started to look at more and more ways, that I could manipulate the paper. This made me interested in how I could present it or show it off, finding different light sources such as torches, fairy lights and sunlight. I tried to look at ways of lighting the paper from behind. I quite admired the visual effected the different light sources had and tried to capture them photographically. I feel the referral has helped me to improve my work, although it wasn’t the grade that I had wanted. I do, however, believe it was fair as I can see where I had gone wrong and how I could improve it and develop more thoroughly. Looking forward I know what I can do to improve my marks, I feel that semester two will be better for me as I have some ideas that I am excited to carry out and work with for independent practice and also production and consumption.
