Sub–genres of Horror.
Sub-genres is a subdivision of a genre of literature, music or film.
Comedy Ghosts

Monsters
Zombies Werewolves
There are many different types of sub-genres of Horror films. Here are some examples.
Witches
Psychological
Fairy-tale Demons Vampires
Action
I have chosen to zoom in on three of these sub genres: action, monster and comedy.
Action horror is a sub-genre of horror with includes intrusion of evil. It contains gun fights and chase scenes. This type of sub-genre normally includes zombies, demons, gore, violent animals and vampires. This genre will use fast pace editing as it contains a lot of action, it is used to emphasis the movements of the characters. There would also be a lot of weapons used because it would create tension and suspense.
Comedy horror has traditional themes and characters. This genre overlaps with black comedy, as they both aim to scare the audience, but also aims to make them laugh at the fear. This would use different codes and conventions as the editing would be changed to make the scenes funny and scary, for example by making the audience jump over silly things will make them laugh about it.
Monster is another sub-genre; it concentrates on the struggle between human and monsters. Often the monster is part of an experiment that goes wrong, linking this genre to science fiction. The villain is normally the monster. This would use different codes and conventions because the villain is not human, therefore they would not have a weapon to kill people – they tend to use their ‘hands’. Also instead of using the convention of ‘relatable location’ they change it to ‘relatable villain’. As you can see below the film ‘Dog Soldier’ uses a Wolf as the villain, which is relatable because wolves are seen as bad animals in society.
