I

van Llewlyn Cartwright was born on April 4, 1947 to the proud parents of the late Ivis and Cyril Cartwright in the quaint settlement of McKenzie Hill Long Island. Ivan was the first child to bless the union. As a boy Ivan attended Roses All Age School. Upon completion of Roses All Age School, he became employed with the Diamond Crystal Salt Company. Ivan came from a family who believed in education; therefore, he left Long Island to enroll at the Technical Institute in New Providence where he studied mechanics, successfully completing the program to attain a certificate from the City & Guilds of London Institute in mechanics in 1967. He then went on to work at the Ministry of Works. In 1969, during a visit to Long Island, he attended a wedding and his life changed forever when he met a young lady who lived in Mangrove Bush by the name of Sharon Knowles. He was immediately attracted to her, and for several months he wrote many letters in pursuit of her; eventually leading to him relocating to Long Island in December of 1969 where he commenced employment at Carroll’s Mechanic Shop in Deadman’s Cay. His persistence in pursuit of Sharon, whom he affectionately called ‘Chilie’ paid off; as they were united in matrimony on the 4th April, 1970; a fruitful union which produced four children; three boys and one girl. After marrying his lifelong companion and friend, he discontinued working at Carroll’s Mechanic Shop and started working for himself at his home. Apart from mechanics, he had a zest for the seas; he loved anything to do with boats and the water. Anytime there was a conversation

involving fishing, boats or mechanics, he would eagerly participate, always willing to impart his knowledge. He learnt a skill that had not yet reached the island; how to use a Hawaiian Sling and Spear with goggles and fins; a skill he happily shared with many other persons in the community. Having such a phenomenal desire for the sea, in 1976, he and his dad bought a smack boat which they named ‘The Lucky Strike’. Fishing then became his main source of income. In 1985 he ventured into boat building when he built his first boat which he named the ‘Little Sherry’ in honour of his only daughter. Ivan was always a family man. He believed in doing whatever it took to support his family; sometimes being out to sea for weeks at a time, braving rough weather to ensure that they were well taken care off. During his early fishing years when the children were still fairly young, he would take them with him many times to his boat when he had work that needed to be done. The ‘Little Sherry’ served as an apprenticeship for Adrian, while it became a playground for Damian & Sherrel; Dexter had already gone off to college at the time. Sometimes Sharon would go but she would often become seasick; something he always teased her about. After he sold the “Little Sherry’ he moved on to obtaining larger fishing vessels, which he would rebuild and give a complete remake. He was always so proud of his transformations and handiwork. He was very talented and there was nothing he couldn’t do, once he put his mind to it. He always believed in doing things well and always giving or selling the best; whether it was fishing or farming. As he became older, he started to follow in his father’s footsteps when

he entered the farming business; initially farming for watermelon and sweet potatoes. Whenever he was out to sea, Sherrel was responsible for managing the farms. Ivan had a strong faith in God. He was much indoctrinated and lived his life according to the scriptures. He strongly believed in the scriptures. Ivan never so much as even cursed and he disliked any type of confrontation. He was an avid church goer; whenever he was on the island he could be seen in the back of the church. Ivan was very proud of his children and their accomplishments. In his eyes he had done his duty to God by raising his children to be upstanding members of society. He was happy that he was able to see all of them grow up and married with their own families. He enjoyed having his grandchildren around, especially when he was able to fish or go boating with his sons and grandsons. Nicholas was always his go to guy whenever he needed something done with his phone or the television; anyone who knew Ivan, knew he enjoyed watching a good movie or a western. In April of 2017, Ivan complained of having shortness of breath and was losing his appetite. It was discovered that he had fluid surrounding his lungs and he needed to have surgery to remove the fluid. A week later, the doctors called his daughter in for a meeting and confirmed that Ivan had lymphoma. Ivan remained strong, deciding to fight and give it his all. In June of 2017, Ivan and Sharon were moved to Colombia by their son Dexter to ensure that he received the best treatment and care possible. Dexter would often visit and check up on his dad; sometimes with his wife and children. Ivan was always overjoyed when he received calls from family and friends during this time; especially when Adrian would call his dad to ask him for help with any problem he may have been facing with a boat, or keeping updated with all the messages in the fishing chat. In October of 2017, after completing seven rounds of chemo, he was able to leave Colombia and travel to Miami for a while; he was overjoyed as he was able to see his friends and spend time with his family. His daughter Sherrel took a trip to Miami and surprised him, giving him the chance to meet his granddaughter, Gabriella for the very first time. During this time, his son Damian as well as Albert and Bernadette along with their families

as well as two of his friends, Kevin and Baltron were able to visit him. He was very happy and hopeful that he had defeated the cancer; however it was later discovered that the chemo was not successful and he had to go back and do even stronger chemo. As daunting as the news was and even when that chemo was unsuccessful, he still remained positive and never complained about his illness. He looked forward to returning home and spending time with his family and friends who he had not seen in such a long time. He wanted to spend time with Gabriella ensuring that he was there for her first birthday and insisting that she go back to Long Island with him. Ivan was still doing his best to fight, but he became weak and the cancer was just too aggressive. As time went on he became weaker in his legs, something that concerned him always. He never complained and always reassured his wife that she was doing a wonderful job in taking care of him, as she was willing to try anything to help him get well. He never wanted her to become worried about him and always reassured her that it would be ok. On October 1st, 2018, Ivan became weaker and started having trouble breathing; as he did not have access to oxygen, his condition worsened. He slipped away peacefully on October 4th, 2018 after praying together with his wife and surrounded by their son Dexter and other family members. Pre Service Hymn | ‘Through All the Changing Scenes of Life” Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

Oh taste and see that God is good: experience will decide how blest are they, and only they, who in God’s truth confide.

Oh magnify the Lord with me; with me exalt God’s name; when in distress and fear I called, God to my rescue came.

O saints, fear God, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make holy service your delight; your wants shall be God’s care.

The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliverance God affords to all who seek and hope and trust.

The Lord preserves the souls of those who on God’s truth depend; to them and their posterity God’s blessing shall descend.

BLESSING OF THE BODY I bless the body of Ivan Cartwright with the holy water that recalls his baptism into Christ of which St. Paul writes: “All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death.” By baptism into His death we were buried together with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For it we have been united with Him by likeness to His death so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection. Behold the light of Christ. Thanks be to God.

Priest: People:

“I am the resurrection and the life, the person who believes in Me, though he dies, yet shall that person live, and whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die”. Do you believe this? Yes, we believe that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, who is come into the world.

We must work the works of Him who sent us while it is day, for night comes when no one can work. “As long as I am in the world”, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world”.

Priest: People:

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Priest:

Let us pray: Almighty Father, You raised Your Son, Jesus, Christ, from the dead, so that we who believe Him to be the Light of the world may, with Him, be brought to the fullness of Light in His resurrection. Grant, we ask you that our dear brother Ivan Cartwright who has left this world will inherit eternal life, through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. OFFERTORY HYMN | “And Can it Be” And can it be that I should gain An int’rest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love Divine! ’Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. ’Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine! Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness Divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own. Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

He left His Father’s throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me.

Priest: People:

Pray, brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Deliver us, Lord, from evil, graciously grant us peace in our days, that by the help of Your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ. Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne; Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone! Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion Thunder like a mighty flood: “Jesus out of every nation Has redeemed us by His blood.”

Alleluia! Bread of angels, Here on earth our Food, our Stay; Alleluia! Here the humble Flee to You from day to day. Advocate and Intercessor, Earth’s Redeemer, hear our plea; You, the Lamb, alone we worship, You, the Lamb, alone we see.

Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us; Faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received Him, When the forty days were o’er, Shall our hearts forget His promise? “I am with you evermore.”

Alleluia! King eternal, Lord omnipotent we own; Alleluia! Born of Mary, Earth Your footstool, Heav’n Your throne. Robed in flesh, the veil You sundered, Limitless High Priest we laud You have saved us from destruction, You have raised us up to God!

RECESSIONAL HYMN | To God Be the Glory’ To God be the glory, great things He has done; So loved He the world that He gave us His Son, Who yielded His life an atonement for sin, And opened the life gate that all may go in.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, To every believer the promise of God; The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Refrain Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give Him the glory, great things He has done.

Refrain Great things He has taught us, great things He has done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; But purer, and higher, and greater will be Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. Refrain

My Dearest Husband Ivan, words truly cannot express my grief because a part of me died with you. You were a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. An outstanding, hardworking and honest person, a gentleman extraordinaire! You were my rock, my strong tower and the person I depended upon for everything. We were blessed with four wonderful children, three daughter-in-laws, one son-in-law and six grandchildren whom you treasured and adored. You were a role model for them so your legacy will truly live on! We stuck together through thick and thin, which resulted in a strong marriage with respect for each other. Yes, you had your faults but the good outweighed the bad. People came from all over the islands to seek your advice in mechanics and fishing, which you willingly gave. I did not have to worry about anything when it came to maintenance and repairs. You were my “fix it man! Your trust in me was immeasurable. I had the freedom to do whatever my heart desired because I had your support. We were a team in the ventures you took on, and you were truly a gifted person. When you were diagnosed with lymphoma, you did not despair and you fought valiantly. Although it was a very difficult time for both of us our relationship grew stronger. During that period of time it gave us the opportunity to talk and spend time with each other and I thank God for that! I will always love you! Your memories will linger in my heart forever! Rest in peace until we meet again! Your loving wife of forty eight years, Sharon (Chilie) Cartwright.

Tribute to Daddy Daddy, you were my first love; the man that could do anything, even lift engines by himself. Before I had dolls, I had your hair to comb and decorate as I pleased. I can still remember all the piggy back rides or lying next to you on the cold tile floors talking you to death as you often tried to take your naps. I smile whenever I think of the many trips to go check on your boat, which I would often raid for change. Last year when you came to the hospital , I prayed that you would be ok. When they told me you needed surgery, you didn’t want me to miss work to be there but I had to stay to know you were ok. I knew when the doctors called me to meet with them at the hospital it would not be good news but I just didn’t want to believe it would be the worst news of my life. I would come to visit you every evening in the hospital and you would always tell me I didn’t have to come every day; but I just could not bear the thought of you being there all alone. That’s just how you were though; you never wanted to bother us or have us worry about you. You were a simple man; it didn’t take much to please you. You always said that you hoped you lived to see me get married one day and I am so happy that you got the opportunity to walk me down the aisle God granted your wish and even gave you a little more than you asked for because he allowed you the opportunity to see me have a child of my own. I am glad we were able to spend time with you and that I was able to grant one of your last wishes, to have Gabriella spend the summer with you in Long Island. You always said she was me right back in the world and that you were travelling back in time to when I was her age. It was nice to see you still manage to smile and not complain despite what you were facing. Daddy, you were a good father, someone we could always depend on. Going home will never be the same, because you won’t be there. I will miss having to bake for you whenever I came home. I have such fond memories of you; I am only sad that memories are all I have now. I am glad that you are not suffering any longer, because you never wanted to be a burden. When I picture you, I can still see you smiling as you watch over us now. I love you daddy and I will forever cherish the memories. You will live on in my heart forever. I will make sure that Gabriella knows what a great man her papa was and always remembers the song you taught her. I miss you so much already. Your only daughter, Sherrel

M

y father instilled in us a core value system that defined who he was as a person and as a father. He was a man of integrity. He believed in the value of an education and in hard work. He demanded honesty and respect. Don’t get me wrong, he was stern, and his parenting style was tough. Whenever we stumbled, he could have accepted our moaning and advised us to take the easy way out. But he would have none of that. He fully expected us to see things through. I knew that he always wanted what was best for me, my brothers and my sister. As I look back, I remember the first time I was able to negotiate successfully with my father. It was when I convinced him that I only needed five O levels to get into COB and not eight that my teachers recommended I take. He agreed! He has been supportive of my decisions through the years, including my decision to move to Canada for my career and my decision to live in the United States. Although I left Long Island so many years ago, we spent substantial time together in Miami. I will always cherish those memories. When Daddy became sick, he approached it with the same strength and conviction that defined who he was as a man. He embraced going to a different country where he couldn’t speak the language for treatment. He fought hard and valiantly. He tried his best to remain positive even when his body started to fade. I loved and respected my father. Daddy, I will miss you. Love Dexter

God’s Garden Submitted By: tammylee God looked around his garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew that you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone… For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Prayer for the Family | Fr. Kendrick Forbes FINAL PRAYER BY THE PRIEST

GRAVESIDE HYMNS “When Peace Like A River When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. Refrain: It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed his own blood for my soul. Refrain

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Refrain And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, even so, it is well with my soul. Refrain

‘Trust and Obey’

When we walk with the Lord In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way; While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey. Refrain Trust and obey, For there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus, But to trust and obey. Not a shadow can rise, Not a cloud in the skies, But His smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt or a fear, Not a sigh or a tear, Can abide while we trust and obey. Refrain Not a burden we bear, Not a sorrow we share, But our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, Not a frown or a cross, But is blest if we trust and obey. Refrain But we never can prove The delights of His love, Until all on the altar we lay; For the favor He shows, And the joy He bestows, Are for them who will trust and obey. Refrain Then in fellowship sweet We will sit at His feet, Or we’ll walk by His side in the way; What He says we will do; Where He sends, we will go, Never fear, only trust and obey.

Farther Along

Tempted and tried we’re oft made to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long; While there are others living about us, Never molested, though in the wrong.

Often I wonder why I must journey Over a road so rugged and steep; While there are others living in comfort, While with the lost I labor and weep. Refrain

Refrain Farther along we’ll know more about it. Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up my brother live in the sunshine We’ll understand it all by and by.

Faithful ‘til death, said our loving Master, A few more days labor and wait; Toils of the road will then be as nothing, As we sweep through the beautiful gates.

When death has come and taken our loved ones Leaving our homes so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder how others prosper Living so wicked year after year. Refrain

Refrain When we see Jesus coming in glory; When He comes from His home in the sky; Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion. We’ll understand it all by and by.

Glad Reunion Day There will be a happy meeting in Heaven, I know When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below Gathered on that blessed hilltop with hearts all aglow That will be a glad reunion day. Refrain A glad day, a wonderful day, A glad day, a glorious day There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day. When we live a million years in that wonderful place Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace That will be a glad reunion day. Refrain A glad day, a wonderful day, A glad day, a glorious day There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day.
