PRESIDENT ARCHER

Go Boldly!

When I was told the theme of this year’s Star Tracker Star Performers Track Classic – “Go Boldly,” I felt as if I were teleported back to my boyhood days when I couldn’t wait to watch Star Trek. So if you would indulge me for a moment, here would be my version of the Star Trek’s intro for a track meet:

“Athletics, the final frontier These are the voyages of a Star Tracker Our mission is to explore a whole new world To seek out a new life and meet new people To boldly go where no athlete has gone before!”

If you are not a Treker like me, then I suggest that you go on Youtube and watch the intro of the series. Once again, like a little kid I digress. Its amazing how Star Trek and the Star Trackers’ mission are in such alignment with each other. The mission to embark upon a new frontier in sports and education, to experience the world and meet new people, to make a life of yourself through your God-given talents and to be the very best that you can be as an athlete, a student and a professional are all the ideals of a Star Tracker.

When one considers the body of work of this organization - one that assists the least among us, that selflessly teach and encourage the weak and the strong, treating them as equals in a sport that can be so tribalistic. It is an organization that impresses upon its athletes and coaching staff to Go Boldly and raise the standard of excellence in everything that you do.

To Go Boldly conjures up the spirit of fearlessness and courage; it is the bearing of confidence even in the face of defeat. It is the clarion call to never give up and believe that somewhere deep inside that we are all winners.

To Go Boldly, a Star Tracker is left to explore and to discover all the riches that life offers in its multi-faceted spheres. It is a mission to find yourself, to learn your craft and to be best that you can be.

Mere words could hardly explain the virtue of being Bold without the support of all the Star Trackers accomplishments from high rates of scholarship recipients, regional and international medalists and record breakers to even a World Record Holder.

Yet still, I say be Bolder, run faster, throw farther and chase the sun, the moon and the stars and even if you fall short, maybe you’ll find yourself on the mountaintop.

2025 is expected to be an exciting year and the excitement is fanned by the Star Trackers meet. It is always a delight to visit this meet, as it is a part of a family reunion of schools and clubs from across the Family Islands who embark upon a common mission to become a Bold and shining Star.

I wish therefore to congratulate Captain James Kirk, Lieutenant Spock and Lieutenant Data and Admiral Scotty....well I guess I’m back in Star Trek mode...so back to reality. I wish congratulate our everyday Star Fleet – Captains David Charlton and Laura PrattCharlton, Lieutenant Rudolph Ferguson, Asst. Lieutenants Luther Rolle, Claudlyn Clarke, Wellington Richards, Myriam Stapleton, Nurse Michelle Mortimer, Chief Warden Sandra Rolle, Assistant Warden Andrew Rolle, and Cameo appearances by Grammy Beverly Wallace Whitfield, together with the incredible fleet of athletes and parents.

May you continue to boldly go where you have never gone before!

VISION STATEMENT

“To provide optimum physical training and discipline while enhancing character, leadership, and wholesome living among our athletes, by a team of qualified, dedicated, passionate coaches, assisted by committed, caring parents working in tandem, striving to promote excellence in the sport of track & field within the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.”

MISSION STATEMENT

The Star Trackers Track & Field Club will distinguish itself as a leader in track & field in the Bahamas and will be recognized for its ardent parental involvement. Its trifold (athletes, coaches, parents) formula for success will be utilized to foster and promote high academic standards and athleticism while cultivating productive citizens in the young people it trains, mentors and influence both on and off the track.

Sponsor's message

We want to thank everyone for attending todays STAR TRACKERS TRACK & FIELD CLASSIC. Your presence here today proves that you join us in supporting our Bahamian Student Atheletes and Student Athletes from Schools/Clubs in other Countries...!! As most of us understand, competition brings out the Best in our Student Atheletes...!!

Baker & Greyco are so proud to again sponsor this year’s 22nd Star Performers T&F Classic of 2025.

Baker & Greyco have done work in multiple countries throughout the world beginning with The Atlantis Project, The Lucayan, Pelican Bay, and Caves Heights to name a few we have done in The Bahamas. These were followed by projects in Puerto Rico, Aruba, St Martin and Togo, Africa. Greyco is capable of building any size project and we have an experienced staff that can assist with design, engineering, and the execution of your project regardless of world location. The fundamental belief in doing the right thing for our clients, co-workers and communities has made us the leader in concrete construction around the world. We understand that the projects we build are not just about profit and loss but about owners, client’s, and the communities where they are

built. Many of our projects will and have had a significant impact on local economies thru direct employment and the purchasing of goods and services from local suppliers. Over the years our participation in Bahamian projects has enabled us to contribute well over 2.5 million dollars to the Bahamas National Insurance, over 2.3 million dollars to The Bahamas Public Treasury, well over 80 million dollars to local vendors and suppliers. Most importantly, we have put well over 50 million dollars into the hands of Bahamians thru direct wages.

In appreciation for the opportunities given to us we also attempt to give back to our local communities thru great non-profit endeavors like The Star Trackers Track & Field Club and we are proud to once again sponsor this 2025 Star Performers Track & Field Classic. Our investment in these Bahamian Student Athletes has resulted in millions of dollars in scholarships that have literally altered the course of their lives. The universities and colleges that award these financial scholarships do so only after sorting thru hundreds of applications in search of deserving students. We are extremely proud of every scholarship recipient and the successes they have achieved because of such outstanding opportunities. To date, StarTrackers has had over 100 Student Athletes catch a flight to a

great and rewarding future.

We would like to especially honour Devynne Charlton, the 1st World Record Holder for The Bahamas in the 60m hurdles. We have watched Devynne compete from she was just a little girl. She was always a fierce competitor, never giving up. We are extremely proud of you Devynne!

We also want to thank and salute our Greyco and Baker employees who have played significant roles in projects here at home and abroad. When you think of Great Companies, you must also think of Great Employees. Our Bahamian Employees have helped make our Company Strong. From all of us at Greyco and Baker, again we welcome you to today’s Start Performers Track & Field Classic and wish you all a Healthy and Prosperous 2025. May God bless us All and GO TRACKERS..!! GO BOLDLY!

Regardless of where these Student Athletes finish in their respective races, please give them a resounding cheer as they have all worked very hard to get here today..!!!

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF OUR YOUTH

Each year, the Star Performers Track and Field Classic is one of the more well-attended meets on the local track and field calendar, in large part because of how it caters to young athletes from different islands around the archipelago of The Bahamas.

This year is no different with athletes coming in from Grand Bahama, Abaco, Andros and Exuma. The one-day meet, set for Saturday February 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the original Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium, is one of the more inclusive and popular meets on the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) calendar.

In addition to hundreds of athletes from New Providence, Meet Director David Charlton said there are also 150 coming in from Grand Bahama and the Family Islands, most of whom are looking to put down qualifying times and distances for

the 2025 CARIFTA Games scheduled to be held in Trinidad & Tobago.

Charlton said they are able to accommodate the large influx of athletes and coaches mainly because of the contribution they receive on an annual basis from title sponsor Baker Concrete/ Greyco Ltd. along with other individuals and corporate Bahamas.

“We’re very excited with what is set to take place this Saturday. The forecast predicts beautiful weather with no breeze so we are anticipating a number of qualifiers, particularly in the sprint events,” said Charlton. “Thanks to JR McDonald from Baker Concrete/Greyco Ltd., we are able to accommodate a large number of Grand Bahama and Family Island athletes. He has been very reliable to us over the years. It is because of him that we are able to extend help to the Grand Bahama and Family Island athletes.”

James R. McDonald, vice president of operations at Baker Concrete/Greyco Ltd., said he is thrilled to be doing his part to assist with the development of young athletes in the country and is only hopeful that more corporate citizens would come on board. He has been in The Bahamas since 1997 and facilitated the sponsorship of the Star Performers Track and Field Classic shortly afterwards.

“Coach David Charlton and his team put together

a presentation and we were on board from day one,” said McDonald. “It’s a privilege to assist and something we look forward to. It’s what being a good corporate citizen and sponsor is all about. After Coach Charlton and his team made the presentation, I said this is awesome. It was exactly what we were looking to do. My speech to the athletes is always the same - we could put the ladder in front of you but it’s your job to climb the ladder and ascend to new heights. We saw that with Devynne (Charlton) and now we have a world record holder and world champion in our midst. All of these kids are awesome. Our first scholarship award winner went to UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), and now he (Dr. Karlton Rolle) is a medical doctor. There was another girl (Tanae Dorsett) who got a full ride to Rice University in Houston, Texas. We are so proud of all of these kids.”

Baker Concrete/Greyco Ltd. has been the title sponsor of the Star Performers Track and Field Classic since 2006.

Dionne Briton, coach with the Invictus Track and Field Club in Freeport, Grand Bahama, said they are grateful for the support they receive each year.

“We have 20 athletes coming in - eight female athletes and 12 males. This event is like the mother of all track and field events. They go all out to assist Grand Bahama and Family Island athletes and make sure they are well taken care of - from accommodation to bus transportation and meals, everything is taken care of. They even assist with airfare. No athlete is left behind and our athletes look forward to it. We have been coming for the last 11 years. Our athletes are always very excited to come to this meet. We’re very grateful and we look forward to attending.”

Athletes from eight track and field clubs in Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be attending the meet along with the Andros Heats Track and Field Club from Andros, the Fast Track Superstars from Exuma and the Moore’s Island Exterminators from Moores Island, Abaco. Athletes will arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday.

Coach Kennord Mackey and the Turbulence Track and Field Club out of Eleuthera usually attend the meet but Mackey said they have been unable to the last two years due to their own meet which they stage at the same time in Rock Sound, Eleuthera.

“They do an excellent job with assistance,” said Mackey. “We usually bring about 10 athletes and they help us with hotel accommodation, registration and food, and also help a few athletes with airline tickets. We would have been more than glad and happy to take part, particularly since we have a few who we feel could make an attempt at qualifying for CARIFTA. We will be having our own meet this weekend but we wish the Star Trackers family all the success in the staging of their meet.”

The 22nd Star Performers Track and Field Classic, staged by the Star Trackers Track and Field Club, promises to be a star-studded affair. One of the featured matchups is expected to be the battle of the Zions - Zion Miller from Bahamas Speed Dynamics in New Providence welcoming the challenge of Zion Shepherd from Freeport, Grand Bahama, in the under-20 boys 400 meters (m). Both have already ran sub-48 seconds for the year with Miller running 47.58 seconds at the Red-Line Athletics Sonja Knowles Track and Field Classic at the original Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium last weekend and Shepherd running 47.67 seconds indoors. The qualifying time for the CARIFTA Games is 47.65 seconds.

Also, talented athletes such as Keyezra Thomas, Rizpah Thompson, Kianna Henchell, Jayden Moss and Isiah Jones from Grand Bahama are set to make an appearance at the meet.
