MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR GENERAL
Her
Excellency
The Most Honourable Dame
CYNTHIA A. PRATT
O.N.,GCMG
I am indeed pleased and delighted to extend best wishes to the organizers, honourees and patrons of the 51st Red Cross Ball 2025. Under the theme, “Mystic Blossoms - An Enchanted Journey Through Asia,” attendees anticipate an exciting and memorable evening.
This Ball, which is a staple on the national social calendar, will kick off major fundraising events for The Bahamas Red Cross Society.
I am particularly pleased that the organizers will recognize the contributions of Bamboo Shack as Corporate Honouree and Sir Franklyn and Sharon Lady Wilson as individual honourees. It is important that the Bahamas Red Cross Society recognizes and pay tribute to its sponsors and donors.
On Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, a number of its corporate sponsors were honoured at Government House. Although the many volunteers and contributors donate without an expectation of reward and compensation, it is always good to show appreciation.
I wish to take this opportunity to encourage others to support the work of the Bahamas Red Cross Society.
The many special projects of the Bahamas Red Cross such as Meals on Wheels, Disaster and Emergency Relief, CPR and First Aid and Ambulatory Services deserve our highest commendation and support.
In closing, I wish to commend Mr. Edison Sumner, President of The Bahamas Red Cross Society, Ms. Alicia Pinder, Director General and the co-chairs of this year’s Ball, Mrs. Kimberly Thurston and Mrs. Bernadette Bunch for their hard work and commitment to an evening of splendor and excellence.
Enjoy your evening.
Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame
A. Pratt, ON, GCMG

This evening, we come together from different walks of life, yet we share a common purpose. We are here to uplift those in need. The funds raised tonight will help maintain vital humanitarian services, ensuring that comfort and relief reach those who rely upon the Red Cross in their hour of greatest vulnerability.

New Providence, The Bahamas
Iextend greetings to The Bahamas Red Cross on the occasion of your 51st Annual Red Cross Ball. The very fact that your organization continues to maintain its relevance across five decades is a testament to your adaptability and strong pulse on the national, global and technological trends of an ever evolving society. Your ability to collaborate cross-generationally to provide the support services and training throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is commendable. Even though our country was spared from major natural disasters in 2024, it is was reassuring to know that your organization was poised to provide aid if called upon, and for this we are truly grateful.

Message from
EDISON L. SUMNER
President of The Bahamas Red Cross Society
Distinguished guests, esteemed colleagues, and cherished friends, welcome to the 51st Ball of the Bahamas Red Cross Society, themed “Mystic Blossoms - A Journey Through Asia.” Tonight, we embark on a cultural journey that celebrates the richness and diversity of Asian cultures while reflecting on our own vibrant history and impact.
As we look forward to June 2025, we prepare to celebrate a monumental milestone—the 50th anniversary of the Bahamas Red Cross Society Act of 1975. This landmark legislation not only marked our transition from a branch of the British Red Cross, which had served the Bahamas since 1939, to an independent national society, but it also established us as an auxiliary to the government and its agencies. This unique position enables us to collaborate closely with the government in times of national need, enhancing our ability to serve the public effectively and efficiently.
I am profoundly proud and honored to lead this organization during this dispensation and to stand on the foundation laid and the pillars built by all of my predecessors over the years. Their vision and dedication continue to inspire our work and our mission.
The work of the Bahamas Red Cross is invaluable to our nation. From disaster relief and emergency response to community health and education initiatives, our efforts have touched countless lives and strengthened our communities. As an auxiliary, we play a crucial role in supporting governmental efforts, ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive response to the needs of our people.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the members of our Executive and Management Committees for their tireless dedication, as well as to our volunteers, staff, patrons, sponsors, and contributing donors. Your unwavering support and generosity make our mission possible, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
Events like this Ball play a crucial role as major fundraisers, enabling us to sustain and expand our operations. Your presence here tonight is a testament to your commitment to our cause, and we thank you for your continued support. I encourage others to get involved in the work of the Red Cross as contributing members and volunteers. Your participation can make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.
A special thank you goes to the 2025 Ball Committee, chaired by Kim Thurston and co-chaired by Bernadette Bunch, for their incredible work in executing yet another excellent event. We are also deeply grateful to all of our sponsors, especially BTC, for their continued support as our title sponsor this year and their commitment to sponsor again in 2026. I also wish to congratulate all of the 2025 volunteer awardees as well as the BRCS 2025 Honourees Sir Franklyn and Sharon Lady Wilson and Bamboo Shack Company lead by Ms. Elaine Pinder on their remarkable accomplishments in supporting our National Society.
As we revel in the beauty of “Mystic Blossoms,” let us carry forward the spirit of unity, service, and progress that has defined our journey. Thank you for being part of this remarkable evening and for your unwavering support of the Bahamas Red Cross Society.
Thank you!
Edison L. Sumner President

DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE BAHAMAS RED CROSS SOCIETY
e are pleased to welcome you to the 51st Annual Red Cross Ball. This year 2025 marks a significant milestone, as Bahamian history records the passing of the Act on June 23, 1975, to establish and incorporate The Bahamas Red Cross Society. As we had become a sovereign nation it was time to say goodbye to The British Red Cross. With the unknown ahead, I can imagine there must have been some uncertainties, yet they forged forward.
As can be expected, within the past fifty years we have witnessed many changes both in The Red Cross and the growth and development of our nation. One thing that has remained, however, is the stellar partnerships and unwavering support of the Bahamian people to the most vulnerable in our community. Individuals, Companies, Corporations, Churches, other Organizations and Volunteers throughout the years have shown renewed confidence in our passion and principles of relieving human suffering wherever it may be found. It is your confidence that has buoyed us throughout the years and for this, we remain forever grateful.
I stand on the foundation laid by so many amazing people whose significant contributions helped us to be where we are today. I wish to congratulate the individual honorees Sir Franklyn and Lady Wilson. Theirs is a history of volunteerism, supplementing our Meals On Wheels program as well as financial support through corporate donations. I further congratulate our Corporate Honoree Bamboo Shack, a staple in supporting our Annual Fair and other fund-raising initiatives through staff support, food as well as monetary donations.
And to you our wonderful Ball attendees thank you for your presence, and may tonight’s memories forever be with you, as together we experience the wonders of Mystic Blossoms, An Enchanted Journey Through Asia.
Message from KIMBERLY WRIGHT-THURSTON
THE CHAIR OF THE 2025 BALL COMMITTEE
Blossoms are best known for their beauty, fragrances, and fragility. Throughout history, blossoms have been the source and inspiration for creating and producing teas, tinctures, artwork, designs, medicine, dyes, and decorations. What is sometimes overlooked is that blossoms are the givers, supporters, and sustainers of life. Blossoms are central to the persistent cycle that ensures everything exists and survives. The Bahamas Red Cross reflects the sustenance and worthiness of blossoms in its work and values.
Voluntary Service, Humanity, Impartiality, Independence, Neutrality, Universality, and Unity are core principles that are blooming on branches of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (ICRC) which embracingly, encircle the world; from Asia to Australia to Antarctica to the Americas to the Artic Circle to The Bahamas. Through its vibrant network of people and systems, the ICRC readily dispenses help wherever it is needed. Truly, every corner of the world can confidently rely on the ICRC to provide, support, and assist in sustaining life. In The Bahamas, the dedication of the Red Cross to its purpose and values leads daily to impacting and improving lives.
The Bahamas Red Cross survives to play its part in the cycle of survival largely due to the contributions and support of members, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and wellwishers. In this vein, we are pleased to extend congratulations to tonight’s Individual Honorees, Sir Franklyin and Sharon Lady Wilson whose charitable grants have greatly assisted in ensuring the sustainability of our programs. We are pleased also, to salute Bamboo Shack, the 2025 Corporate Honouree, whose consistent support has led to much success in our operations.
We are indeed grateful for the dedicated efforts of Members of the Ball Committee who, for many months, have unselfishly given of their time, talents and resources to ensure another successful fundraiser. We are also highly appreciative of the unwavering support of the Ball’s valued Title Sponsor, BTC. BTC’s support is certainly an excellent display of corporate social responsibility to be emulated by others to the benefit of the most vulnerable in our society.
This Ball therefore, provides an opportunity for restorative festivities, for creating and enhancing relationships, for sponsors and supporters to reinvigorate their commitments, and for gratitude to flow freely. Everyone here is a blossom of potential. Everyone is able to inspire and nurture new blossoms. Let us continue to work together so that the work of the Red Cross continues to bear fruit. Let’s blossom together! Enjoy the Ball!

Bamboo Shack: A Bahamian Success Story
Bamboo Shack, a name synonymous with Bahamian culture, is the result of Elaine Ann Pinder’s vision, resilience, and dedication. Her journey began with two jobs—working at an insurance company by day and at a drive-in theater by night—to subsidize her college fees. It was at the drive-in theater that the aroma of freshly fried chicken inspired her dream: to create the best-tasting chicken recipe. Determined to achieve her goals, Elaine left The Bahamas to attend Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.
After completing her studies, she returned home and briefly taught at C.W. Sawyer Primary School. Inspired by then Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling, she launched La Rose Boutique, a premier clothing store that attracted clientele from across The Bahamas and the world. However, the Gulf War in 1990 caused a decline in tourism, forcing Elaine to pivot and pursue her long-held dream of making the perfect chicken recipe. In February 1990, with just $500 in inventory, second-hand equipment, a perfected recipe from her mother’s kitchen, and a cigar box as a cash register, Elaine opened Bamboo Shack in a one-room shack on Nassau Street.
She worked 18-hour days alongside two employees. A product of her environment, after observing Father Allen and Keith’s personally cleaning chicken in tin tubs and managing earnings in a brown paper bag, she did the same. These values quickly turned Bamboo Shack into a thriving enterprise with nine locations, including Bamboo Shack at the Nassau Cruise Port, Bamboo Grill House, Bamboo Shack Express, and later ventures such as Frankie Gone Bananas, Sapodilla Restaurant and Sunset Beach Club. Bamboo Shack now employs over 400 people.
Elaine’s unwavering investment in the Red Cross spans over three decades, reflecting her commitment to its mission of helping those in need. Bamboo Shack was always a participant in the Red Cross fairs, donating 100% of its earnings to support the organization. From raffles to gala events and balls, Elaine’s dedication mirrors her desire to be an agent of hope and serve the community that has shown support for so many years.
With a commitment to innovation and excellence, Bamboo Shack is poised for even greater success. The company is building a state-of-the-art warehouse to better serve its branches and is expanding its franchise model.
Elaine has passed the leadership torch to her children, Gilchrist, Gandhi, and Jamie, who are dedicated to carrying her legacy forward.
Bamboo Shack remains deliciously Bahamian—a culinary empire and cultural icon built on Elaine Pinder’s vision of excellence and her desire to leave a legacy of flavor and compassion.

THE RED CROSS FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
The Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality: these seven Fundamental Principles sum up the Movement’s ethics and are at the core of its approach to helping people in need during armed conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies. These principles unite the components of the Movement – the ICRC, the National Societies and the International Federation – and enable them to provide effective, unbiased assistance to people in need. They are mandatory rules of conduct that the Movement’s components are required to follow at all times, and States must respect this necessity. The Fundamental Principles are key to the Movement’s identity. Adherence to these principles ensures the humanitarian nature of the Movement’s work and brings consistency to the broad range of activities it undertakes around the world. The principles provide a common bond for the National Societies, which vary greatly in structure, culture and membership.
Humanity: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours – in its international and national capacities – to prevent and alleviate suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for every human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.
Impartiality: The Movement makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
Neutrality: In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.
Independence: The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.
Voluntary Service: The Movement is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
Unity: There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.
Universality: The Movement, in which all National Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
