Cora Aslee Gibson, affectionately known as “Toosie” to those who knew her during her youth in Long Island, was born on January 24, 1929, to Ada Turnquest and Hartman Toote. She was the only child of Ada, who passed away months after childbirth. Hartman migrated to New York City and lived there the rest of his life.
Cora was raised by her grandparents on Long Island and various aunts and uncles in Nassau. Her formative years in Long Island profoundly shaped her character and she often regaled her family with fond memories of her youthful experiences in Lower Deadman’s Cay. In her late teens, she moved to Nassau, living first with her late uncle Granville Turnquest and his family until she found employment, and later with her aunt, the late Alice Fox, and her family, before obtaining an apartment of her own. Cora reciprocated this generosity later in life by welcoming into her home, numerous relatives from Long Island, when they moved to Nassau.
While living on Arundel Street in Nassau during her early twenties, she met a dashing young man from Eleuthera, Wilton “Will” Gibson, who was living with his aunt’s family on the same street. A brief courtship was interrupted when Cora moved to New York City to live with her Aunt Lilly in pursuit of better opportunities. However, Will had other thoughts and traveled to New York, persuading Cora to return to Nassau and become his wife. She returned on October 7, 1951 (the day before Will’s birthday), and they were married six months later on April 2, 1952. They were blessed with six children and enjoyed a blissful marriage that lasted 62 years until Will’s passing in 2014.
Throughout her life, Cora was strongly committed to family and family values. She freely gave her time, talents, and resources to assist wherever she could. In 1969, when Will was given an In-Service Award to study for his professional accounting examinations, she and Will made the bold decision to relocate their entire family to England for the duration of his studies.
Her selflessness and commitment to making the world a better place touched the lives of many. Whether she was volunteering with the Yellowbirds at the hospital, the Queen Mary Bahamas Clothing Guild, the Crippled Children’s Committee, at the Ranfurly Home for Children, the Children’s Emergency Hostel, or serving on the government-appointed Juvenile Court Panel, Cora anchored these groups for many years and took delight in the monthly visits, with her family, to these institutions. During her time in England, she also participated in many charitable endeavors and was among the few selected to have tea with Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on one of her official visits to Leeds, England. She was also a devoted member of the Kiwanis Club of Montagu for many years.
Cora was always entrepreneurial, industrious and focused on long-term vision. For decades, she was the successful proprietor of Melita’s on Bay Street. Cora, a chic and fashion conscious lady, made sure that residents and visitors alike could obtain, at Melita’s, fine fabrics, stylish hats, exquisite and unusual notions, accessories for clothing and hats and all of the tools necessary for milliners and seamstresses.
A lifelong devout Anglican, Cora and her family pioneered the expansion of the Anglican Church into southern New Providence. The family began at St. Barnabas (where she and Will were married), then moved to Christ the King, and finally to St. Gregory the Great on Carmichael Road. The Gibson Family were pivotal in the establishment of St. Gregory’s, hosting many of the initial Sunday services on their patio. She was a founding member and the third president of the Anglican Church Women (ACW) organization at St. Gregory’s, where her efforts as a fundraiser had a profound and far-reaching impact on the church. Cora was a woman of strong faith, and her faithfulness to God never wavered. While in the hospital, she comforted herself by reciting the Doxology and Psalm 23, her favorites, with clarity of thought and speech. She made it clear that she was ready to meet her God.
An important aspect of Cora’s life is that she grew up during a time of many social injustices in The Bahamas. These did not quell her courage, vision and fierce determination to ensure that change would come and that every child would have the opportunity to fulfill their God given potential. Pre-1967, she and Will, then a senior civil servant, courageously hosted many meetings of the PLP at their home on West Avenue, contributing to the ushering in of Majority Rule, when Dr. Elwood Donaldson won the Killarney seat for the PLP in the 1967 election. Post-1967 she was active in the Killarney Branch which evolved into Carmichael and Southern Shores constituencies and for many years was a tireless fundraiser for those branches of the PLP.
Cora was a woman of resilience and strong character. God blessed her with 95 years and a legacy that will endure for generations to come. Cora never forgot her humble beginnings. She daily thanked her God that in her lifetime, she moved from having to use the “black people counter” at the rear of Bay Street Stores, to owning a store on Bay Street and seeing her offspring achieve great success. She was proud that, with God’s help, and their unwavering belief in their children’s potential. She and Will raised six successful children who have gone on to achieve great things. In her later life, she was particularly pleased with the developing contributions to society of her grandchildren in their various professions and the potential of her great-grandchildren and generations beyond.
She was the cornerstone of her family, the rock upon which they, and many of their friends, built their lives and dreams. Her steadfast love, grace and compassion knew no bounds. She was an unwavering source of guidance, strength and inspiration, a beacon of light in times of darkness, and a constant source of love and comfort to all who knew her. As a mother, she was the heart and soul of our family. Her nurturing spirit created a home filled with warmth, love, laughter, fun and joy.
As we mourn her passing, we celebrate and treasure the extraordinary life that she lived, the love that she shared, and the lessons that she imparted. We remember her with love, joy and gratitude, cherishing the memories we hold dear and honoring the legacy she leaves behind.
Though she may no longer walk among us, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and her memory will be a guiding light for all who knew her. Today, we say goodbye to a truly remarkable woman, a shining example of love, strength, and grace. May she rest in peace, knowing that her legacy will endure forever. We honor and celebrate the remarkable life of our matriarch, a lady whose presence has graced us all with love, wisdom, and strength. We bid farewell to a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend from Long Island, Bahamas, who lived a life filled with purpose, grace, and unwavering dedication to her family, community, and the causes she held dear.
She is predeceased by: her husband Wilton, son Charles, granddaughter Nhomsa, daughter-in-law DeAnne, sonin-law Kenneth and nephew Don Turnquest.

Celebrant: With faith in Jesus Christ, we reverently receive the body of our sister Cora for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God, our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that she will raise him to perfection in the company of the Saints.
People: Amen.
Celebrant: Praise be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all consolation! He comforts us in our afflictions and thus enables us to comfort those who are in trouble, with the same consolation we have received from Him.
People: Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Celebrant: I bless the body of Cora with the holy water that recalls her baptism of which St. Paul writes: All of us who were baptized Into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. By baptism into his death we were buried together with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister Cora. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord. So, we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling if indeed, when we have taken it off, we will not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So, we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

Celebrant: Let us with confidence and hope confess faith into which we were baptized as we say:
People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Leader: We have gathered to celebrate the entry of Cora into life eternal. People: To affirm with praise and thanksgiving the goodness of the Lord.
Leader: Let us rejoice in God’s presence with us, in death as in life among those who now see God face to face.
People: Our lips will shout for joy, for God’s love is over all that God has made. Blessed be God’s glorious Name forever!
Leader: We feel the pain of separation, we are conscious of our loss, but we have hope in Jesus Christ. People: We give thanks to God from whom comes all life and death and who surrounds us in both. We have affirmed our faith and rejoice in Christ’s victory over death, which is God’s promise to us.

People: Give to our sister Cora eternal life;

The penning of a tribute to anyone is typically not an easy task. To a loved one it becomes harder and to a parent it brings with it a flood of emotions that are often hard to control and express. But here I am, and I must do my best, as those words you echoed daily ... “do your best”. You were my mommy.
How does one encapsulate a life of ninety-five years?
A tapestry woven with love, wisdom, and grace. You walked this earth with beauty and resilience, a gentle strength that touched all who knew you, leaving indelible marks of kindness and compassion in your wake. You were my mommy.
Through the trails and triumphs, you stood tall and firm, a beacon of unwavering love and devotion. Your nurturing embrace and comforting words shaped my very being, guiding me through life’s twists and turns with wisdom beyond measure. As your last child, your baby, I may have been viewed by my siblings as spoiled; I called it blessed! The beneficiary of all the lessons and adjustments to parenting you and Daddy learned in raising my five other siblings I got and was able to use as I raised my own children. I learnt what it meant to build a home, not just raise a household. Thank you, Mommy!
As you journey beyond the veil, know that your spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those you touched, and the lives you blessed. Your legacy of love will endure in the memories we hold dear, a testament to the remarkable woman you were. Though the sun has set on your earthly days, your light shines brightly in the heavens above, a guiding star to lead us through the darkest nights. Your words always consistent, “do your best”, and “in all things remember you know how to pray”, will guide us. Bless you Mommy!
The Doxology and Psalm 23 your constant “go to’s” even to the very end. They will always have a different meaning for me going forward. Your book had ninetyfive chapters; I am blessed to have been a part of fiftyseven of them. I now must continue writing as you would want the story to go on. I will do my best. Sleep in Peace Mommy!

On June 28, 2024 at 7:30 am, I received the call from the hospital for the family to come to the hospital right away. Nervously I asked what happened and the person on the other end of the phone answered you will see. These words sent shock waves and chills through my body but I managed to call my sister Joan and asked her to let everybody know as I got dressed and went to pick Joan up to go to the hospital. Mommy had left this world and entered into eternity. She was everything to us and so much more than we can explain. We would give anything to be able to hear our mother’s voice one more time.
Sitting here now writing these words are the hardest thing to do as we had you for ninety five years and this was still not enough. We have to relive the wonderful memories we had with you as we realize this is the final good bye. Mom - we love you and miss you every day. You were a devoted and dedicated mother.
Mommy was an amazing woman. She was self-less always concerned for the well-being of others over her own. Even during the last weeks of her life, she put everyone else above herself. She always asked whoever was around if they had something to eat and if they were comfortable.
There wasn’t any need that anyone had that our Mom didn’t try to meet. No matter what the need may have been, Mom wanted to help fulfill it. She gave all of herself at all times and sacrificed her own needs and desires for the sake of her family and she gave willingly without question and without asking for anything in return.
Mom loved without condition and she loved with her whole heart. Her love was never forced; it was just always there – no matter what. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grand like no one else could – and it was a strong, genuine love. As her life came to a close, we realized that no matter how much she told us she loved us, she couldn’t put it into words - her love was so great. When we left home for school you were, when we returned from school you were there. You were always there for us regardless of the situation or other interest or activity you were involved with.
Mom always made us laugh without even trying to. She would make a comment that no one expected and that comment would surely bring a smile and a laugh. She found humor in everyday things and it was always a pleasure to be around her.
Mom you somehow knew when to swoop in and save us and when to step back and let us learn from our own mistake which made us resilient. You’ve wiped our tears; cheered us on and told us that we are capable of anything in the world which made us confident. You have loved us unconditionally even when we were difficult and that made me strong. Sometime we thought you were too strict with us but we realized it was for our own good. You were our biggest supporter, our wisdom, our reality check, our incredible mother.
You prayed daily for the entire family and encouraged us (Joan, Charles (Deceased), Pamela, Maxwell, Larry and Dwight) to have a personal relationship with God.
Mom because of you we are the persons we are today. Your love for God and your prayers have protected our family and our strong Christian values that you and Dad have instilled in us over the years will remain with us forever.

My parents were an incredible team who exemplified the virtues needed for nation building.
They loved their God. While in her hospital bed, Mummy, strongly recited the Doxology and the 23rd Psalm. St. Gregory’s, where services were held at our home, on West Ave., before an edifice was built, is but one example of their faith in action. The Children’s Emergency Hostel, the Vestry, ACM and ACW are some of the other examples. They instilled in us love of worship and commitment to serving in the Church. Whether in The Bahamas or the UK, for Mummy and Daddy, the Priest was revered, as we children were reminded on many Sundays when, what we thought we would have for Sunday dinner was served to the Parish Priest and any visiting family. We, happily, learned to love “fire engine” on those Sundays. We respected our elders and always addressed them as “Sir” or “Ma’am”. For Mummy and Daddy, these values were non-negotiable.
For Mummy and Daddy, after God came family. They were married for more than 60 years. Again, they demonstrated, not just talked, their love of and commitment to family. Mummy welcoming family into our home, Grumpa living with us when he came to Nassau to record Harvest Time, taking the family to Leeds, in the 1960s, while Daddy pursued his professional accounting qualification, being one of the first Bahamians to do so in the UK, birthdays –where everyone got a piece of the first slice of cake, and Mummy and Daddy delighting in their Grands and Great Grands are only a few of the many examples. Mummy, always mindful of Daddy’s financial position,
masterfully, worked with Daddy, to make his “In Service Award” stretch to take us on holidays to Spain, Scotland, the Great Lakes and other exciting places in the UK and Europe. These were life lessons for us on saving and “living within your means”. Their love enveloped extended family, their children’s friends as well as their friends. Our home was a gathering place always filled with love, laughter and lots of delicious food and fun. I can’t forget Mummy, who could not reverse, co-opting me to drive her new car to take her wherever she needed to go.
They loved their country. Daddy, supported, as always by Mummy, and his colleagues built BTC from Batelco, a Government Department to a well sought after communications enterprise. BTC had fiberoptic cable before most, if not all, communications companies in the Caribbean. Daddy and his colleagues laid the foundation. Mummy was proud of her lineage as a direct descendant of Sankey Toote, I think that his first name was Thaddeus, one for the first black MPs (Parliament was then called the Legislative Council, well before political parties were formed), businessman and land owner (Zode House is on land that he used to own). Just like Sankey Toote, Mummy had a Vision for her country, and she, with Daddy, made sacrifices to accomplish it. One example is that Mummy and Daddy held many PLP meetings in their home and they were instrumental in accomplishing Majority Rule. Killarney was one of the seats in the PLP column in 1967.
Mummy, with her beloved Will, exemplified the virtues of what it takes to build strong families, communities and nations, some of which are, being God fearing, committed to family and family life, courage, trustworthiness and industriousness.
This is how Mummy lived and God blessed her with 95 years. She has gone on to her well deserved rest. She and Daddy left their family a precious legacy. This is why although we shall always miss you Mummy, we celebrate your life, and will do our best to follow your worthy example and pass the legacy on to generations to come.

Though she may have left this earthly space, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. Forever remembered, forever cherished, in the legacy of love and lessons she imparted.

To this day, I recite this prayer, a cherished scripture recommended to me by “Granny,” in times of trouble and need. I have passed this onto each of my children and sometimes, I am even called upon by them to recite it to calm whatever “troubled waters” they may be navigating at the time. It has always brought us each during these times, a sense of peace and comfort.
There’s so much to remember about Granny, or as my children and the other grands and great-grands affectionately called her, Nana. Throughout the years, I have observed Granny in her various roles as a doting and faithful wife to Gramps, a loving mother, and a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. She was generous to a fault, often secretly handing over “envelopes” in her bedroom or elsewhere to the grands and great grands, away from the prying eyes of their parents. When I was much younger and school-aged, she sewed my school uniform skirts and those of my female cousins. This tradition continued until the last of us graduated from high school. My first job was at her store called Melita’s where I was introduced to gloves, hats and to always carry a handkerchief in my purse.
Granny was the consummate prayer warrior who firmly believed that “prayer changes things.” She encouraged all of us to pray daily, and if you ever complained about anything while visiting her home, she would immediately take you to her room, make you kneel down, and offer up prayers on your behalf.
Her love for cooking and entertaining her family was legendary. She was famous for her crab and rice, made in one of the largest pots you’d ever seen, and her conch fritters. New Year’s Day was always spent at her home with immediate and extended family and friends. This tradition

continued even after she was unable to do the cooking herself, with my mother Joan and Aunt Pam taking over the responsibility.
Granny’s civic-mindedness was evident in her involvement in worthy causes, whether it was at the Boys Industrial School (now Simpson Penn Centre for Boys), the Yellow Birds, or later, the Kiwanis Club. As a child, I recall her preparing a meal on Sunday to take to the Boys Industrial School, or making conch fritter batter for the Church cookouts in the early days before the Church had been built. She was always busy, always involved.
After Gramps passed away, she missed him terribly. She often talked about “going home,” and it became clear that she meant her eternal home, signaling that her time with us would soon draw to a close. On the day before her passing, she recalled to us that she had seen a kitchen very clearly but could not see the cook, causing her to ask us, “who is the cook?” I now believe that she has assumed the role of the cook in God’s heavenly kitchen.
While we mourn our loss, we find comfort in the 95 years she spent with us. Her legacy as a God fearing, generous grandmother and great grandmother, a dedicated wife and a life of committment to helping the less fortunate will be remembered. She was a beacon of strength in our family, and now she rests in peace with her beloved husband, Wilton, son, Charlie and granddaughter Nhomsa.

AAs we sit down to reflect on the life of our grandmother, known to her grands and great-grands as Nana, we are filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the memories and the legacy she has left behind. Our earliest and most cherished memories of her revolve around her fine fabric and notions store, Melita’s. It was there, amidst rolls of vibrant fabrics and the hum of sewing machines, that our love for fashion was born. Nana had an impeccable eye for beauty and style and she was a lady of grace. She delighted in watching the “who’s who” come in to select fabrics to design the most exquisite dresses. If you were to look back at pictures from the past you would see how these ladies transformed themselves into the belles of the balls, and in those moments, Nana taught us to appreciate the artistry of fashion.
Working at Melita’s was not just about the work itself. Work came with its own special perks. Nana would treat us to regular Burger King lunches (a welcome break from the healthy meals prepared at home). But… all her grands know just what the white envelope meant. This was the most exciting part of the week as young children. Receiving our salaries (which by the way was always way more than any allowance we would receive). Though we would have been more than happy to be volunteering our services, the white envelope instilled in all of us a sense of independence and the value of hard work from a young age.
Nana’s love and care extended beyond the walls of her store. Every school year, she made sure we had the nicest, crispest school uniforms. We have no clue where our other friends got their uniforms from. We don’t even know where our cousins got their uniforms from. What we do know, though, was at some point during the summer we got measured up in time for the new school year. Come September we would step out the car with immense pride knowing that her skillful hands and loving heart stitched each piece, and we wore them with pride, knowing they were made with so much love.
In our later years, we cherished the moments spent listening to her stories. Nana often took a back seat to Gramps, but in her quiet way, she demonstrated the wisdom of knowing how to support your man. She embodied the saying that behind every successful man is a good woman, and she showed us daily what it meant to be that supportive force.
For the last ten years, since Gramps passed away, Nana longed to be reunited with the love of her life. It is a bittersweet comfort to know that she has finally found her Will, and that they are together once more. While we grieve her loss, we find solace in the thought that she is in a better place, happy and whole again.
Nana’s legacy lives on in the lessons she taught us, the love she gave us, and the memories we hold dear. She was a woman of grace, strength, and immense love. Nana, you will forever be missed, but your spirit and the beautiful memories we shared will remain with us always. Thank you for everything. Rest in peace, knowing you were deeply loved and will never be forgotten.

They say the best way to pay tribute to those who have passed away is not through grief but through gratitude. Allow me to take a moment to share a few of the numerous things that make me most grateful to have had you as my grandmother.
I am grateful that you poured your whole self into cultivating a tight-knit, loving family, extending through several generations. Ever since I was a little boy, the house on Carmichael Road always had family swinging through; aunts, uncles, and cousins, all wanting to be in your orbit and share their day with you and Gramps. You were the heartbeat of the family. There was always plenty of food and laughs to share, hugs doled out frequently, bumps and bruises, both physically and figuratively, sweetly tended to. You taught us to put family first and to always show up for each other. You embodied this by traveling near and far to see your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s graduations, weddings, and other important events. In recent years, being able to do video calls and seeing Natalie and Xavier delight in telling you about their activities and blowing you kisses was truly special.
I am grateful for your ability to listen. When someone was having a conversation with you, you made them feel like they were the most important person in that moment. You asked questions and paid attention to the answers, truly caring about the responses, no matter how trivial. In our visit a few weeks ago, you asked Xavier what his favorite colors were and sure enough, the next time we saw you, you were wearing a beautiful outfit in those exact colors, much to his excitement. You sought to engage us in conversation that broadened our horizons, educated us on both history and current events, and stood strong in your convictions. You were never afraid to give your opinion and always stood up for your beliefs.
I am grateful for your community leadership. At a time when there were not many women-led businesses, you not only operated Melita’s, but you did so on top of running a full household. Your success undoubtedly paved the way
for numerous women coming behind you, making it just a bit easier for them to realize they could do the same. As a young man, the time I spent in the shop with you was truly transformative in my life. I loved nothing more than to spend the afternoon there, chatting together you while we worked. You would inevitably impart some life lesson and your wisdom always echoed, coming back to help me later on. Not only did you teach me basic business skills at the shop, you treated me with the utmost respect, instilled a strong sense of hard work, and demonstrated first hand the value of making a difference in your community and working on your passions.
I am grateful you were devoted foremost to God and your husband. I’m grateful for your quick-witted sense of humor. I’m grateful you had the warmest smile and for how your eyes would light up when you saw me. I’m grateful I got to share you with Lauren, Natalie, and Xavier so that your light could shine on them for even a short while. Most of all, I’m grateful God chose you to be my Nana.
We will miss you dearly but take solace in knowing you are at peace and will continue to be our biggest supporter and guardian angel in heaven.

This tribute is not the easiest to write as we most recently had a chat, where you pressured me to hurry and set a wedding date so that you could ensure you had the right coloured dress; and honestly one thing I always wanted, especially after losing my mother, was to have both my grandmothers present on that occasion when it came. Our Lord, however, had other plans for you and He called you home.
When I think of you though, Nana, I reminisce on our conversations about my work and how you always encouraged me and reminded me profusely that I can do all things through Christ and remember to pray and trust in Him. I also think of the days after swimming, running around Melita’s; and now as an adult, I realize the significance as you a black female entrepreneur having a business on Bay Street. The spoiling with whatever fast food any of your grandchildren wanted, and the strong relationship I witnessed between you and my dad are also forever etched my heart.
In recent times, we enjoyed conversations on my career and doing my best to make a difference in our country; something you lived and left a great example for all of us to follow; we also shared our love for and devotion to the Lord our God, always touching on how it is by His grace alone that we have come this far, and by His grace and mercy we will continue to carry on.
Nana, you lived a full life, you’ve seen seasons come and seasons go; and whilst we honor your earthly pilgrimage, I have no doubt that you are feasting on a heavenly banquet with Gramps, Uncle Charlie, Uncle Kenny, Nhomsa and my mum, along with all of the other family members. We weep for you not because we didn’t expect you to trod this path, but because it hurts not to have you here to impart further wisdom and knowledge. Nonetheless, whilst we love you and wish you had a little more time with us, we
know that Jesus loves you best and by God’s grace, we shall meet again.

Today, I pay tribute to a remarkable woman who touched my life in ways that words can barely express - my beloved grandmother. She was not just a grandmother to me, but a guiding light, a source of endless love, and a beacon of wisdom.
Her presence in my life was a constant reminder of the power of resilience, kindness, and unwavering strength. She faced life’s challenges with grace and dignity, always putting her family and loved ones above all else. Her legacy of love and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
As I navigate the journey of adulthood, I carry with me the lessons she taught me - to be kind, to be strong, and to never lose sight of what truly matters in life. In loving memory of Past President Cora Gibson, from her devoted Sisters in Christ at St. Gregory the Great ACW: Oh, sweet rose, a lovely flower that came from God above. Cora Gibson was a beacon of grace and warmth; her life was a testament to the boundless love of God. Sister Cora brought us joy, peace, and love. Our Sister Cora was a woman who lived with humility and grace. Sister Cora was our teacher, our pillow stone, our confidante, and our biggest supporter. She made sure the ACW was well taken care of, just like everything else she was a part of. Her unwavering faith, gentle spirit, and kind heart touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Sister Cora was the glue that kept our church family together. By opening her home to St. Gregory the Great for one of our very first Masses, as a cherished member of our ACW, Cora’s presence was a source of inspiration.
Sister Cora was smart, cheerful, and witty—a ball of joy, the life of any good party or social event. Her laughter filled our gatherings with light, and her prayers uplifted us in moments of need. She was a stern, no-nonsense person. She was large and in charge, laying down the laws and rules of the ACW, as she holds the title of our second President. Sister Cora gave each one the same amount of love and support, even when she was not physically able to join us at church or meetings. Sister Cora exemplified the character of a Proverbs 31 woman. She was a woman who feared the Lord. She made certain that her children were religiously taught, and for this, we give her high praises.
There are treasures on earth which make life worthwhile; Sister Cora was a special treasure. Sister Cora, thank you for all you have done for the ACW of St. Gregory the Great. We stand on your foundation to be productive Christian women. Though we grieve the loss of such a beloved sister, we find solace in the cherished memories and the enduring legacy of her faith and kindness. Cora’s spirit will forever remain a guiding light for us all. As we continue our journey, we hold her in our hearts, grateful for the time we shared and the love she so generously gave.
It is hard to say goodbye, but we know that you are gone to be with the Lord. Fond memories will always be in our hearts. We love you, but Jesus loves you the best. Sleep on and take your rest. With heartfelt sympathy and love.

The passing of a mother is one such occasion for each of us...siblings and adopted siblings...and family members to reflect in our own way, how much Mom Cora meant to us all both individually and collectively.
The relationship between the Gibsons and Marshalls began back in 1964 when we met Joan and Charles Alex at St. John’s College on Market Street Hill. We fondly recall the Gibson’s move from Musgrove Street in Chippingham to West Avenue in the Carmichael area...where we would gather under the firm but affectionate eyes of “Momsie”.
We can vividly recall Wilton and Momsie rellocating to the United Kingdom for Wilton to complete his professional accounting studies...and taking with them the young children...including infant Dwight.
Upon their return from the United Kingdom...our families reunited...and the bonds grew stronger both in our professional and personal lives.
As youngsters, the guys developed and mastered the art of team-play in both dominoes and cards (whist).
The relationship continued and grew as we shared in significant events in each others lives...and the Marshalls brought Alex and Larry into the Lunch Bunch.
We were all impacted by Momsie’s discipline and devotion to family...we loved her dearly...and will miss her greatly.
As St Francis of Assisi admonishes “May her soul find rest and eternal peace”.
Lieutenant Governor Anastacia Johnson, President Michelle Minnis, Officers, Board of Directors, and Members extend their sincerest sympathies to the Gibson family on the passing of Past Chair Cora Gibson, a devoted Kiwanian and cherished community pillar. Known affectionately as the “Mother of The Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu,” Cora’s generosity and commitment were unwavering. Her life was a testament to service, dedication, and the spirit of giving.
Past Chair Cora’s Kiwanian legacy spanned generations, with her late husband Wilton and daughter Pamela serving as Distinguished Presidents, and her late granddaughter Nhomsa as a Past President, all within the Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu. Cora’s leadership and influence were integral to the club’s success and growth.
In 2009, the Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu honored Past Chair Cora for her dedicated service, celebrating her as the heart and soul of the club. Despite her health challenges in later years, she remained an active member. Although she was unable to attend meetings and participate in projects, she was adamant about remaining a financial member, embodying the Kiwanian spirit until her passing. Cora’s love for cooking was well-known; she often shared her culinary talents at board meetings and was the designated chef during her extensive travels, always finding joy in shopping and preparing a scrumptious Bahamian breakfast.
Past Chair Cora’s life journey is a shining example of community service and dedication. Her selfless contributions and kind heart touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Rest in peace, dear Cora; your impact and legacy will forever be remembered throughout the Kiwanis Organization.
