HER STORY

Cypriana was the first child born to Cecil Valentine and Anna Louise (nee Russell) Bethel on 17 September 1930. She was quickly followed by Cecil in 1932, Peter in 1934 and Pam in 1935. The young family settled into the family homestead on Sands Road in the late 1930’s. Cypriana’s father, C V Bethel, was an educator and her mother, Anna, was a renowned seamstress.

Cypri was educated at Wright’s kindergarten on Delancey Street, the public junior and senior schools and the Government High School.

Cypri started her working career in the public service in the Telecommunications Department where she rose through the ranks to become secretary to the Director and subsequently to the Minister. After retiring from the public service she joined the Solomon Brothers group of companies, where she served as Executive Secretary to Norman Solomon. After retirement from Solomon’s she served as the home secretary for Barry Farrington, who lived across the street from her in Sans Souci.

On 30 September 1972, Cypri married the love of her life, Frederick W Fleischer, a very handsome young priest who had moved to Nassau from Florida. In January 1975, the couple adopted a son, whom they named Trevor Cyprian Fleischer on whom Cypri doted.

She was so proud of Trevor’s accomplishments throughout his life. She welcomed Trevor’s wife, Beth, with open arms when they got married 25 years ago and was even more elated at the arrival of her grand-son, Zak, who was named after Cypri as he shares his middle name, Cyprian, with his dad. Cypri was especially proud of Trevor when he joined the US Coast Guard twenty years ago where he risen through the ranks over the years to become a USCG Chief. Over the years, Trevor would visit his mum as often as he could and Cypri would go to visit Trevor’s and his family, wherever they were stationed.

After Fred passed in July 2022, Trevor’s wife, Beth, moved to The Bahamas to take care of Cypri. Beth has been a Godsent in taking care of Cypri as if she were her own mother. Beth took over the home in Sans Souci, ensuring that any required maintenance of the house was taken care of and that all was working well to keep Cypri as comfortable as possible over the past two years.

Cypri was exceptionally proud of her grandson Zak who loved his grandmother and enjoyed visiting her and staying with her at their home Wyncliffe where he learnt to swim in the pool there. Cypri and Zak had a wonderful bond and she had an important role in his life. She would have been very proud of him when he recently graduated with his Master degree in Business. Zak is very proud of his Bahamian roots.

Cypri was brought up as a Baptist and attended Salem Baptist Church as a child. She later joined the Anglican church and was a devoted and faithful member of Christ Church Cathedral for the rest of her life. She was very active in her church and was a member of many of the church organizations including the Anglican Church Women’s Ministry, where she served as President for two terms; Vestry; and the Cell “D” group, where she was the longest serving coordinator. She coordinated Bible Studies, coffee hours and other socials, fund raising activities, fashion shows and pageants. She supported her husband in his music ministry including serving as choir mother, dresser, and coordinating the choir’s travel both local and international. She hosted visits by foreign musicians to her home and to the Cathedral and looked after their every need. Over the years, no matter how her memory failed her, she always remembered the hymns and the music; she may not recall your name, but she knew every verse of the hymns.

Cypri was a glamorous, fashionable woman of her era and loved dressing up and going out to parties and balls. She and her dear friend, Setella Cox, would model clothing, especially bathing suits at the Silver Slipper nightclub on East Street for the Carver Garden Club and at the Adastra Gardens in Chippingham whenever they had shows. This love of modelling and fashion led Cypri to become very involved in the Miss Bahamas Beauty pageant, which she was involved in for many, many years. In later years, she was also one of the judges for the Kelly’s Bride of the Year competition. She also served on several other committees.

Fred indulged her in looking her best as he loved buying her new dresses and outfits with matching shoes and purses, all ready for a fabulous night out. She loved to entertain and was the hostess with the ‘mostest’. She was a member of the ladies Friday night Pokeno games, which was a ritual and endured for decades. Cypri enjoyed the weekly fellowship with a group of friends, along with her sister, Pam, Lady Edith Turnquest, Shirley Cooper, Ruth Robinson, Joyce Bain, Caryl Lashley, her god-daughter Michelle Fields, and many others over the years. Cypri delighted in the fact that she was a perennial winner.

Cypri was a woman of the world and loved to travel and cruise with family and friends. She often went on trips with her dear long-time friend Lowell Mortimer and with the Thompson clan, the family of her sister-in-law, Earla.

It was discovered however that Cypri was not a fan of modern technology as she was not interested in learning to use computers, despite the many benefits presented to her relative to their convenience; she instead chose to remain faithful to her typewriter. She also refused to make use of the cell phone that her husband Fred purchased for her, which remained off even though she was urged to have it on just in case of an emergency.

Two of Cypri’s god-children, Michelle Fields and Robin Roberts, both say that she was absolutely the best Godmother in the world; she took her role seriously. They were like family to her and she participated in their lives, nurtured, supported and indulged them. She never forgot a birthday and personally baked and delivered the very best cakes. She was always loving with the kindest most encouraging words, but able to bring one back down to earth with a sharp quip with it was necessary. She encouraged them in their ambitions and was proud of their accomplishments. She was adored.

Cypriana died peacefully at her home in Sans Souci on the afternoon of 25 June 2024 with her daughter-in-law Beth and her devoted care-giver, Maureen McQueen by her side.

She is survived by her son Trevor; daughterin-law Bethany; grandson Zak; brother Peter I Bethel; sisters-in-law Jeanette and Earla Bethel, Bobbie Miller, Priscilla Turner; nephews Colin and Terence Bethel and Brad Dassler-Bethel; nieces Patricia Davis, Pamela Miller and Alison Bethel-Pastor; and many family members and friends. Special thanks to Beth, her daughter-in-law and Maureen, her care-giver of many years, who both took such good care of her in her later years.

THE SERVICE

RECEPTION OF THE CREMAINS

{ALL STAND}

Minister: With faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the cremains of our sister, Cypriana. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

Minister: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Minister: Let us pray.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister, Cypriana. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

ALL: Amen.

THE OPENING SENTENCES

Minister: Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” {John 11: 25-26}

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His compassion never fails: every morning they are renewed. {Lamentations 3: 22-23}

I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. {Romans 8:38-39}

We brought nothing into this world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. {Job 1:21}

Glorious in his faithfulness!

3.Fatherlike he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows. In his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia, alleluia!

4.Widely yet his mercy flows! Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face. Sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise with us the God of grace!

Minister: The Lord be with you

All: And also with you

COLLECT: Almighty God, we remember before you today your servant Cypriana and we pray that, having opened to her the gates of larger life, you will receive her more and more into your joyful service, that, with all who have served you in the past, she may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen

THE FIRST LESSON | Wisdom 3:1-5, 9 | Read by: Robin Roberts, Godson

Reader: A Reading from Wisdom 3:1-5, 9.

But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.

In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace.

For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality.

Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself.

Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.

Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

HYMN | The King Of Love My Shepherd Is

1.The King of love my Shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am His, and He is mine for ever.

2.Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul He leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth.

3.Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love He sought me, and on His shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me.

4.In death’s dark vale I fear no ill with Thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy Cross before to guide me.

5.Thou spread’st a table in my sight; Thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight From Thy pure chalice floweth!

6.And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise within Thy house forever.

SECOND

| 2 Corinthians 4:16--5:9 | Read by: Pamela A Miller, niece

Reader: A Reading from the Book of 2 Corinthians, chapter 4 verse 16 to chapter 5 verse 9

We do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling-- if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord-- for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

Reader: The Word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

HYMN | Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer

1.Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou are mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand: bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore.

2.Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fiery cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through; strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield.

THE HOLY GOSPEL | John 14:1-6

Gospellor: The Lord be with you

All: And also with you

3.When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side: songs and praises I will ever give to thee.

Gospellor: A reading from the Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

All: Glory to Christ our Saviour

Jesus said, to his disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Gospellor: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to Christ our Lord.

Refrain

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord! Let the earth hear his voice: praise the Lord, praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice: O come to the Father through Jesus the Son and give him the glory: great things he hath done!

2.O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood! To every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Refrain

3.Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer, and higher, and greater will be our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.

The Urn is taken to the Columbarium by Trevor C Fleischer

(As the Urn is borne from the Church the following sentences may be said:)

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and giving life to those in the tomb. The Son of Righteousness is gloriously risen, giving light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death.

The Lord will guide our feet into the way of peace, having taken away the sin of the world.

Christ will open the kingdom of heaven to all who believe in his Name, saying, “Come, O Blessed of my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you.”

Into paradise may the angels lead you. At your coming may the martyrs receive you, and bring you into the Holy City, Jerusalem.

RECESSIONAL HYMN

The Day Thou Gravest Lord Is Ended

The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended, the darkness falls at thy behest; to thee our morning hymns ascended, thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank thee that thy church unsleeping, While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And rests not now by day or night.

As o’er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, no dies the strain of praise away.

The sun that bids us rest is waking our brethren ‘neath the western sky, and hour by hour fresh lips are making thy wondrous doings heard on high.

So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never, like earth’s proud empires, pass away; thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever, till all thy creatures own thy sway.

2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Cypriana Bethel Fleischer made a great contribution to this country, dealing with the young persons in her very pleasant manner, giving them a purpose and hope something to look forward to, uplifting their self-esteem.

On a more glamorous note, she was a founder member of the Miss Bahamas contest which l think became a reality in I961/2. It was an exciting time for the young ladies, as we all had a favourite young lady to win. The committee members were dedicated to their cause, training their charges to walk with a few textbooks on their heads which gave them grace, and other niceties, such as standing for lengthy periods etc. Cypriana worked tirelessly in order to ensure a successful contest. She also did her share of being a chaperone to the young winner, sometimes to an exotic far away country in order to take part in the Miss Universe pageant, the peaking of the whole effort. My sister and myself could not attend the first contest as we were having exams. This exciting year coincided with GCE and/or Pitman Exams.

Cypriana’s dad and my dad were very close, having studied high fashion tailoring together, and worked together downtown. This was before CB as we called him went abroad to study languages. Cyp’s mum was an outstanding seamstress. I was told by the wife of a former Acting Premier, that Mrs. Bethel had made her wedding gown. Small wonder that our Cypriana was well-versed in the “Finer things of life.” “May the Angels Welcome Your Sweet and Gracious Soul into Paradise,” Cypriana. you’ve done the very best that you could have.

If it was to be done, one could rest assured that it would be well done, if Cypriana was involved. The Fleischer’s son was in the class with our last daughter. I’m not sure if Cypriana was class mother, but I’m sure that she was involved in quite a lot of the class’s happenings. At the school fair, she featured her own stall. One year it was salads, consequently we, other mothers, were asked to bring to the stall “ice cream scoops”. A good idea, ensuring that the portions would be neat. She was a wonderful mother to their child.

The purpose of this somewhat informative tribute is because I found it incumbent upon me to somehow “remind or to share a bit of both of our family’s knowledge of Cypriana’s parents, siblings and her upbringing. There is just one way to raise a family, to respect our elders, to know the Lord. The Right Way. I realized sometime ago that many of the persons on her street/area were not aware of her status in this paradox called life. As I said, the reason I wrote the above, which is just a peek into her existence. Cypriana Bethel Fleischer “Was A Class Act.” who came from a brilliant family. “Rest in Eternal Peace my Dear Lady. You will rise in Glory.”

CYPRIANA BETHEL FLEISCHER

As I pause to reflect on your life, I think of you as one of the greater influences on my life; as a mother, a graceful woman to emulate, a church leader. I remember your smiling eyes and how you graciously and kindly treated others, always warm and welcoming. Your style, your manner! And that deep bubbly laugh!

The way you organize and plan and pull together meetings, functions and events with flair! Your direct and polite manner and at times tough love delivered with the nicest words and twinkling eyes that sent the message that you were no pushover. The way you get down and do the hard and dirty work to make it happen. And then you emerge with grace, style and beauty!

I saw the fruits of your labour from afar with The Bahamas Beauty Committee, and up close and personal with our Anglican Church Women and St. Dominic Cell. Not only were you instrumental in purchasing and procuring through donations, but you also rolled up your sleeves and did the hard work preparing care packages and setting up to receive our beneficiaries with the same gusto and energy. I saw you serve as our longest Cell Coordinator. You guided and built our St. Dominic Cell to a vibrant lay ministry undertaking many projects to support the Cathedral while bringing together many families in fellowship as one unit.

You made it all look so easy! Mrs. Fleischer you were a class act!

I am a better woman for having walked alongside you all these years. Thank you for the many lessons you may not have realized you were giving me!

I thank God for allowing our paths to cross these many years!

May your soul now rest in peace.

Arlene Marie Hercules

TRIBUTE TO CYPRIANA V FLEISCHER

Mrs Fleischer and I were initially involved in the Miss Bahamas Beauty Pageant each year, while she was still active on the committee.

We later developed a church relationship in the late 1990’s at Christ Church Cathedral. There was a time when I did not drive and she would come and pick me up every Sunday for church; this went on for years. It then came to the point when she was no longer driving and I picked her up for church and this continued until she was no longer able to attend, about four years ago.

It was such a joy each Sunday when she would get in the car and she would ask if I went swimming that morning and I would say, yes I did. She would ask if the water was rough and I would say, yes it was. She would say that was the time that she loved the water herself. She would adjust her seatbelt and look around and she would say that there is so much beauty and it costs us nothing. She would go on with the beauty of nature and the beauty of the world. Then bring up the events of the week. The outing would end after church with a long drive out west with her telling stories about her childhood and growing up and Salem Baptist and later

transitioning to Christ Church Cathedral.

It was so much love involved in the care and concern for the environment because she took the time to look at the flowers, the water and the sky. She would always chime that it was so much beauty and it cost us nothing, telling me “look at it, look”.

We would drive on and on approaching Harbour Bay, we would get ice cream from Dairy Queen. We always saved this for the last leg of our Sunday trip. She was like a little kid in the candy store always; her eyes would gleam and she would smile all the way home as she ate her ice cream.

I will always have those memories of her; the joy that I was able to bring to her on a Sunday. Even after the years of going to visit her in her state of silence. She would always respond “I love you, I love you” and “Thank you for coming to see me”. She was always gracious up to the very end, even up to two weeks ago when I visited her last and she was holding I love you as best she could and holding my hand.

So I will have those memories of her forever and ever. Amen. Jerome Miller
