JOHN OZZIE SAUNDERS

FORSYTHE John Ozzie Saunders was born to proud parents Peter and Wally Saunders (deceased) on October 26, 1961 in New Providence, Bahamas. The oldest of two children, John’s early childhood was spent in Ross Corner, Grants Town. Throughout his early childhood John, along with his mother and brother, found themselves relocating from Nassau, to Harbour Island, Eleuthera and then to Freeport, Grand Bahama. His primary education began at Oakes Field Primary and, after relocating to Harbour Island, he attended the Harbour Island All Age School. John later graduated from Catholic High School in Freeport, Grand Bahama and went on to attend Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center where he obtained his Associate’s Degree in hotel catering and restaurant management. He also attended Miami Dade College to further his studies in business administration and marketing. John also lived in and travelled frequently to Bimini where he had family and several best friends like his brother from another mother Shannon. He developed his love of fishing and healthy appetite for hot, freshly-baked Bimini bread. While in high school he was an avid player on the high school basketball team. During his adolescent years John was an employee at Jack Tar and The Princess Hotels in Freeport, Grand Bahama where he learned his trade as a

busboy. Later, his career path led him to work as a paralegal at Fayne Thompson Chambers. In his adulthood, he decided to make Nassau his home where he was employed by Jones Communications as an Accounts Executive for 26 years. John made friends easily and considered himself an entrepreneur. He used his skills learned from Thomson’s office and found additional work referring clients to law firms such as Cooke McIver & Co., Devard Francis and Co. and Murrio Ducille’s Chambers. When he would enter the room he would say, “The big CEO is here!” Often times with his “swaggerific” suits and polite diction, he was mistaken for some “big wig” politician or lawyer. He’d broker big deals, and seek financial advice from his good father-in-law, always trying to make a better and bigger financial future for his beloved children. John never missed an opportunity to brag about how each and everyone of them were doing. In 2015, John became a franchise holder of Pure Water Systems Ltd. which led to a long- term relationship with the Palm Cay Community.

John fathered and nurtured his eldest four children Jonnell, Jonnean, Dominic and Jamie.

The Burial Rite in Celebration for the life of

He played a pivotal role in raising all his children and took pride in every aspect of their lives. John was very influential and instrumental in ensuring the best for his children. Jonelle regards her father as her protector and one who she can rely on for sound advice. Jonnean looked forward to her frequent lunch dates with her dad. Dominic used his father as his sounding board and confidant and Jamie regarded his dad as his best friend and #1 fan as he was rooting for him to go pro in soccer. John had a very tight-knit relationship with all his children, and they regarded themselves as a “wolf pack”. In 1997, John courted Renee Saunders-Forsythe (nee Brown) and it was love at first sight. They were introduced by a longtime friend, Percy, who said, “Husband meet your wife, wife meet your husband.” In late 2001, John decided to ask for Renee’s hand in marriage by writing to her parents, the late Reno and Mary Brown. After seeking their blessing, the couple got married at St. Agnes Parish Church, Baillou Road on November 16th, 2002. Although he was a devout Catholic he decided to become a member of the Anglican faith. They were blessed with two daughters Janaye and Jayna. John’s proudest moment for his daughter Janaye was when she was accepted into IMG Academy in Florida. He doted on his daughter Jayna who was the apple of his eye and affectionately called her “Daddy baby & Boggie”. To know John was to love John. He was a distinguished gentleman, charismatic, jovial and loyal. John’s heart was so big he played a significant role in everyone’s life. John was kind to people just because. He helped many individuals find jobs and was a community activist. He never forgot where his roots were. He was known by his family as “Mr. Make it Happen” as he ensured they all were taken care of. He had such an enduring spirit that he was affectionately called “JR” and “Big John” by his friends. In his caring nature, John was dedicated to accompanying his father-in-law on numerous doctors’ appointments overseas while he was ailing. Even when his mother-in-law and mother, whom he held dear to his heart, were both sick, he gave of his time and sacrificed to fit everyone into his schedule with a big smile and little complaint. He had the ability to relate to people from all walks of life and he looked for the character of

the man. We will miss his Saturday pancakes, his loud cheering during the Dolphin games, his infectious laugh, his ice cream treats, the masculine scent of his cologne, family dinners and his constant reminder to stay focused but most of all we will miss his love and affection. John was a passionate member of the Saxons Junkanoo group. After meeting Renee, he decided to put away his cowbells for his new love. He enjoyed various activities including traveling which he did often with his family. He also enjoyed interacting with the St. Agnes Renewal and Rededication group. He was an avid sports lover, and his favorite teams were the Miami Dolphins and Miami Heat. He was also a proud member of the Prince Hall Mason Fraternity and The Progressive Liberal Party. One of his favorite activities was fishing. On the 23rd day of November 2020, he went on to the nearer presence of God. SEQUENCE OF

EVENTS MINISTER: Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who

believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live, and who ever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His compassion never fails, every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23 Jesus said, do not let your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:1 I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9 We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. Job1:21 MINISTER:

In the midst of life we are in death; from whom can we seek help? From you alone, O Lord, who by our sins are justly angered.

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal One, have mercy upon us.

Lord you know the secrets of our hearts; shut not your ears to our prayers. but spare us, O Lord. Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal One, have mercy upon us. O worthy and eternal Judge; do not let the pains of death turn us away from you at our last hour.

HYMN | “Through All The Changing Scenes of Life

Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still My heart and tongue employ.

Oh, make but trial of His love, Experience will decide How blest they are, and only they, Who in His truth confide.

Oh, magnify the Lord with me, With me exalt His name; When in distress to Him I called, He to my rescue came.

Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then Have nothing else to fear; Make you His service your delight, Your wants shall be His care.

The hosts of God encamp around The dwellings of the just; Deliverance He affords to all Who on His succor trust. MINISTER:

Let us pray.

Almighty God, we remember before you today your servant JOHN and we pray that, having opened to him the gates of larger life, you will receive him more and more into your joyful service, that, with all who have served you in the past, he may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. ALL:

Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON | Read by Earl Thompson Jr. READER:

A reading from First Corinthians Chapter 15 verses 50 to 58

What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. READER: ALL:

The Word of The Lord Thanks be to God.

A TRIBUTE | Stephen Francis HOMILY:

THE COMMENDATION

MINISTER: ALL:

Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints. Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

MINISTER: You only are immortal, the Creator and Maker of mankind; and we are mortal,

formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

ALL: Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain

are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

MINISTER: Let us commend our brother JOHN to the mercy of God our Maker and redeemer. Deliver

ALL:

your servant, John, O Sovereign Lord Christ, from all evil, and set him free from every bond, that she may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit You live and reign, one God forever and ever. Amen.

MINISTER: Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant JOHN, Acknowledge, we

ALL:

humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen

THE COMMITTAL: MINISTER: Everyone the Father gives to me will come to me; I will never turn

away anyone who believes in me. He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also give new life to our mortal bodies through His indwelling Spirit. My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: “Happy are the dead who die in the faith of Christ! Henceforth,” says the Spirit, “they may rest from their labours, for they take with them the record of their deeds.” Man born of woman has but a short time to live. Like a flower he blossoms and then withers; like a shadow he flees and never stays. In the midst of life we are in death; to whom can we turn for help, but to you, Lord, who are justly angered by our sins? Lord God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us from the bitter pains of eternal death. You know the secrets of our hearts: In your mercy hear our prayer, forgive us our sins, and at our last hour let us not fall away from you. JOHN OZZIE SAUNDERS - FORSYTHE

In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to Almighty God our brother John; and we commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful are in joy and felicity: We give you heartfelt thanks for the good examples of all your servants, who, having finished their course in faith, now find rest and refreshment. May we, with all who have died in the true faith of your holy Name, have perfect fulfillment and bliss in your eternal and everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

and the Life: Raise us, we humbly pray, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; that when we depart this life we may rest in him, and at the resurrection receive that blessing which your well-beloved Son shall then pronounce: “Come, you blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Grant this, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.

MINISTER: Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the Spirit of faith and courage, that

they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. And this we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Amen.

MINISTER: ALL:

Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

MINISTER: ALL:

Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God.

MINISTER: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and

giving life to those in the tomb.

The Sun of Righteousness is gloriously risen, giving light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death. The Lord will guide our feet into the way of peace, having taken away the sin of the world. Christ will open the kingdom of heaven to all who believe in his Name, saying, Come, O blessed of my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you. Into paradise may the angels lead thee; and at thy coming may the martyrs receive thee, and bring thee into the holy city Jerusalem. MINISTER: Unto Him that is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless

before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy; to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever.

CLOSING HYMN | “Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not, as thou hast been thou for ever wilt be.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness; morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Pardon for sin, and a peace that endureth, thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

No more in sin I wander, no more in darkness roam The Lord has placed my feet on higher ground; Each day new heights I’m gaining, my soul is nearing home, It’s alright now, I’m heaven bound.

HEAVEN LETTERS TO

If I could write a story it would be the greatest ever told, of a kind and loving father who had a heart of gold. I could write a million pages but there’s one thing I would say, just how much I love and miss my daddy every single day. I may be hurt but I won’t be sad because one day we will see each other again. I love you Dad. Jonnell Saunders

Any man can be a dad but it takes someone special to be a father. You were so special to me you called just about everyday to check on your grand boys and I. Those calls meant a lot. You always loved to hear them say “Papa”. We will truly miss your presence. I will miss the hilarious phone conversations we had in the early morning or late at night. When you were happy you called when you were sad you called or simply showed up. Your strength gave us a sense of protection. I know you’re watching over your Cubs, you were truly our Grizzly Bear. Walking down the isle is going to be so tough without you, but Jaime and Dom will accept that position. Your Cubs celebrate your life everyday. We will be there always for Renee. We will continue to look out for each other as we should and as you would want.

You did not say your last farewell, not even a goodbye. You were gone before we knew it,and only God knows why. A million times we will miss you, a million time we will cry over memories of you. In our hearts you hold a special place, no one else can ever replace. It broke our hearts because we love you, but you didn’t go alone, for piece of us each went with you, the day God took you home. We will meet again someday, for I know you are in a better place. I thank God he made you my daddy while we weathered through the ups and downs we had while you were here on earth. Love You Beyond Words, Miss You Beyond Measures. Dominc

Words can’t begin to describe how much I love you. The OG John Saunders. You were more than just a father and a role model, you were my best friend. My personality, my smile, my humour and even my dance moves all come from you. You touched the lives of so many people and always brought the jokes and fun wherever you went. I wish I could wake up tomorrow to discover this was all a bad dream but I know I have a guardian angel watching over me now and I can’t wait to see you again. Rest in paradise Daddy. Jamie Saunders

“MR. MAKE IT HAPPEN” To a “legend”. Daddy I don’t know where to begin. My Daddy, my protector, my shoulder to cry on, my stress and my rock. They say there is a reason. They say time will heal. Neither time nor reason will change the way I feel. Gone are the days we used to share but in my heart you are always there. The gates of memories will never close. I will miss you everyday until we meet again. Daddy I love and I promise to make you proud no matter what I do. Thank you for all the life lessons you taught me. Thank you for being there to cheer me on. Most of all thank you for being you. I love you Daddy. Keep watching over me. I love you forever legend. Love, Naye Naye Janaye Saunders-Forsythe

To my #1 dad, You have always been there for me when I was sick, sad or hurt you would always be by my side to make me feel better. I miss you everyday and I hope we can meet again someday. I will work super hard to get that honor roll for you because I know you will be proud. I still will be “shootin them goals” because I know you were my number one fan. I love you so much.
