The Obituary RETIRED NURSING OFFICER ICELYN MARIA JOHNSON PRATT Icelyn Maria Johnson Pratt was born on November 7th, 1926, to Ormand and Mary Johnson nee Coakley. Icelyn grew up a happy, quiet and loving child, and was the big sister to Maxine and Ormand Jr. Strong Christian principles and values were instilled in her from early childhood. Attending Church and Sunday school was not an option but rather, it was mandatory. At a very early age she learnt and appreciated the goodness and awesomeness of God. Icelyn attended the All-Age School in Calabash Bay, Andros. She excelled at her studies and soon realized that she wanted to become a Registered Nurse. This meant migrating to New Providence which was not an idea that initially thrilled her parents. She left Fresh Creek to pursue her dream at age eighteen (18) years. While excited, she had some apprehensions about leaving her sheltered life in Fresh Creek for the city life, but she made up her mind to embrace the change and maximize the opportunity. Her parents felt satisfied that while she was required to live in the Nursing Home, she would still be under the watchful eyes of her maternal uncle, Wilfred Stanley Coakley. They developed such a close bond that he became more of a second father to her rather than an uncle. Icelyn enrolled in the Bahamas General Hospital in 1944. After successfully completing a four (4) year training program, she graduated as a Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife in 1948. Shortly after graduation, Icelyn met the dashing and debonair Donald Pratt from Arthur’s Town, Cat Island who at the time was a School Teacher. One of her first postings was on the island of Abaco. There she developed her passion for Family Island and Community Nursing. Donald and Icelyn’s relationship quickly blossomed and on August 24th, 1949, they were joined in Holy Matrimony at St. Agnes Church. This union was blessed with one (1) child, Valerie. They adored their daughter and Icelyn would have laid down her life for her. She was a caring and loving mother who made many sacrifices to ensure that her daughter had the best of everything both psychologically and materially. Despite this, she did not spoil her only child but rather, she ensured that her daughter was well grounded - spiritually, morally and educationally. Icelyn and her husband served on many of the Family Islands in their roles of Community Nurse/Midwife and her husband as a teacher and later as

a Family Island Commissioner. The islands that were the recipients of her service include, Abaco, Mayaguana, West End Grand Bahama, Andros, Cat Island, San Salvador and Exuma. Life on the Family Island was not easy; in fact, she experienced many challenges. Despite this, she recounted her experiences with excitement. Being a nurse on the Family Island entailed many sleepless nights travelling for many miles in a Land Rover to manage medical emergencies and maternity cases. She boasted about delivering hundreds of babies during her career and was so proud to see them become outstanding citizens in their communities. Being the wife of the Commissioner propelled her to many roles including that of homemaker, community builder, counsellor, trusted friend and social hostess. She hosted many official dinner parties for residents and visiting dignitaries to the Island, expertly displaying her exemplary culinary skills and social graces. Icelyn had many hobbies. She was an excellent seamstress and boasted of being able to cut “free hand”. Many persons can attest to her delectable cuisine and baking. It was a joy for her to bake for her family, friends and colleagues. Gardening was her love and she prided herself with eating her home-grown produce and keeping her yard well-manicured. Lilies were her absolute favourite and she enjoyed attending to them at Eastertime. In 1973, Icelyn relocated to Nassau where she was assigned to Community Nursing Services. She spent most of her time working in the District Nursing Service where she performed home visits to those requiring nursing care at home inclusive of attending to newly delivered mothers. Icelyn served with distinction in the community and nothing she enjoyed more than visiting her patients. Her last place of deployment was at the Flamingo Gardens Clinic.

In 1995, she was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) by the Queen for civic, innovative and meritorious service in the local Community - an award well deserved. In August 1990, Icelyn retired after serving with distinction as a Nurse/Nursing Officer. This was the year her 3rd grandson Brandon was born, and she wanted to care for him herself. She doted on her 3 grandsons, Kwivan, Ryan and Brandon. They were truly blessed to have such a loving, caring and devoted grandmother. They meant the world to her. Glenn was not her son-in-law but rather, he was her son. God blessed her to be the recipient of exemplary care from her four (4) “men”. Icelyn was extremely kind. She embraced and gave freely to her family, friends and strangers. She was devoted to her church, St. Agnes and could be seen enjoying the 7am mass every Sunday. Icelyn thoroughly enjoyed the midnight masses at Easter and Christmas. She offered her best and always secured stiff, crisp notes for her tithes offering. She knew how to worship her God as she was deeply grounded spiritually. She looked forward to going to church on Sundays and continued doing so until she was forced to slow down and eventually discontinued due to her declining health. She was also a long-standing member of the Anglican Church Women (ACW) and enjoyed “turning” out with them on the first Sundays of the month.

After suffering a house fire in September 2017, she moved in with her daughter and her family. Due to her declining health, she was unable to return to her home after the house was restored. Instead, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, son-in-law, grandsons and her caregiver Ms. Ruth Burrows. She was treated royally by them. Icelyn was strong and fearless, and a humble, appreciative and graceful lady to the very end. She fought a good fight, but she was getting weary. As her health continued to decline, her family prepared for the inevitable, but were still not ready for that final parting. On Friday September 17th, 2021, she gave up her battle and returned to the loving arms of Jesus. She so aptly demonstrated “so shall a man live, so shall he die” as she very quietly and peacefully slipped away at home, surrounded by love, with her daughter and caregiver praying for her as she ebbed away. A Requiem Mass Of Thanksgiving Musical Prelude | Strings ‘n’ Tings Opening Sentences Celebrant: Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His compassion never fails, every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23
Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:1
I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9 We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. Job1:21 INTROIT HYMN | Through All The Changing Scenes Of Life Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still My heart and tongue employ.
Oh, make but trial of His love, Experience will decide How blest they are, and only they, Who in His truth confide.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me, With me exalt His name; When in distress to Him I called, He to my rescue came.
Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then Have nothing else to fear; Make you His service your delight, Your wants shall be His care.
The hosts of God encamp around The dwellings of the just; Deliverance He affords to all Who on His succor trust. A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | Icelyn Maria Pratt | 7
COLLECT FOR PURITY All: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. COLLECT FOR THE DEPARTED: Celebrant: Let us pray: Almighty God, we remember before you today your faithful servant Icelyn; and we pray that, having opened to her the gates of larger life, you will receive her more and more into your joyful service, that, with all who have faithfully served you in the past, she may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. All:
Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD: NEW TESTAMENT LESSON | 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 Read By | Glenn A. Miller ( Son-In-Law ) Reader: A Reading from the First letter of Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 15 verses 50 to 58 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labour is not in vain. Reader: All:

GRADUAL HYMN | Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer ( CPWI 413 ) Guide me, O thou great redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty, Hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven Feed me till I want no more; Feed me till I want no more. Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, strong deliverer;
Be thou still my strength and shield; Be thou still my strength and shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell’s destruction Land me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according St. John Glory to Christ our Saviour.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Celebrant: All:

SERMON APOSTLES’ CREED: Celebrant:
Let us with confidence and hope confess the faith into which were baptized, as we say
All:
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
INTERCESSIONS | led by Ryan Miller and Brandon Miller (Grandsons) Leader: For our sister, Icelyn , let us pray to the Lord Christ who said, “I am Resurrection and I am Life.” Leader: Lord, you consoled Martha and Mary in their distress: Draw near to us who mourn for Icelyn , and dry the tears of those who weep. All: Hear us, Lord. Leader: You wept at the grave of Lazarus, your friend, comfort us in our sorrow. All: Hear us, Lord. Leader: You raised the dead to life: Raise our sister Icelyn to eternal life. All: Hear us, Lord. Leader: You promised paradise to the thief who repented: Bring our sister Icelyn to the joys of heaven. All: Hear us, Lord. Leader: She was nourished with your Body and Blood: Grant her a place at the table in your heavenly kingdom. All: Hear us, Lord. Leader: Comfort us in our sorrows at the death of our sister Icelyn. Let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope. Celebrant: Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to you our sister Icelyn who was reborn by water and the Spirit in Holy Baptism. 10 | Icelyn Maria Pratt | A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will
Grant that her death may recall to us your victory over death, and be an occasion for us to renew our trust in your Father’s love. Give us, we pray, the faith to follow where you have led the way; and where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to the ages of ages. All:
Amen.
ACT OF PENITENCE Celebrant: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Celebrant:
Let us therefore confess our sins.
All: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and one another, in thought, word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are sorry and repent of all our sins. For your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your Name. Amen. THE ABSOLUTION: Celebrant: Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen. OFFERTORY HYMN | And Can It Be (CPWI #496) And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain— For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains feel off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
’Tis mystery all: thee Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.
No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach thee eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace— Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me! A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | Icelyn Maria Pratt | 11
Celebrant: Through your goodness, Lord, we have this bread and wine to offer, the fruit of the earth and the work of human hands. They will become our spiritual food. All:

THE EUCHARIST PRAYER Celebrant: All:
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Celebrant: All:
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Celebrant: All:
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father almighty, everlasting God: Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of life eternal. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Celebrant: Sovereign Lord and Father, to you be glory and praise for ever. In your boundless wisdom you brought creation into being; In your great love you fashioned us in your image; In your tender compassion you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, to share our human nature; In the power of the Holy Spirit, He overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of your new creation. On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.” And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Celebrant:
Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved Son.

COMMUNION HYMNS Blessed Assurance | ( CPWI 497 ) Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
(Chorus) This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love.
O Jesus I Have Promised To Serve You To The End | ( CPWI 672 ) O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my Friend; I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my Guide.
Oh, let me hear Thee speaking, In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will; Oh. speak to reassure me, To hasten, or control; Oh, speak, and make me listen, Thou Guardian of my soul.
Oh, let me feel Thee near me; The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear; My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer, And shield my soul from sin.
O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee That where Thou art in glory There shall Thy servant be; And Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Oh, give me grace to follow, My Master and my Friend.
14 | Icelyn Maria Pratt | A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will
Oh, let me see Thy footmarks, And in them plant mine own; My hope to follow duly Is in Thy strength alone. Oh, guide me, call me, draw me, Uphold me to the end; And then in heaven receive me, My Savior and my Friend.
POST COMMUNION ALL: Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN | When Peace Like A River When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
(Chorus) It is well, it is well, With my soul, with my soul, It is well; it is well, with my soul.
And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
Officiant: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tomb. The Son of Righteousness is gloriously risen, giving light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death.
The Lord will guide our feet into the way of peace, having taken away the sin of the world.
Christ will open the kingdom of heaven to all who believe in His Name, saying, Come, O blessed of My Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you. Into paradise may the angels lead you. At your coming may the Martyrs receive you and bring you into the Holy City, Jerusalem. Graveside

THE COMMENDATION Minister: All:
Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints. Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.
Minister: You only are immortal, the Creator and Maker of mankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! ALL: Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. Minister: Let us commend our sister Icelyn to the mercy of God our Maker and Redeemer. Deliver your servant Icelyn, O Sovereign Lord Christ, from all evil, and set her free from every bond, that she may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit where you live and reign one God forever and ever. Minister:
All:
Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant Icelyn, Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive her into the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen
THE COMMITTAL: Minister: Everyone the Father gives to me will come to me; I will never turn away anyone who believes in me. He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also give new life to our mortal bodies through His indwelling Spirit.
My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope.
You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: “Happy are the dead who die in the faith of Christ! Henceforth,” says the Spirit, “they may rest from their labours, for they take with them the record of their deeds.” Man born of woman has but a short time to live. Like a flower he blossoms and then withers; like a shadow he flees and never stays. In the midst of life we are in death; to whom can we turn for help, but to you, Lord, who are justly angered by our sins?
16 | Icelyn Maria Pratt | A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will
Lord God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us from the bitter pains of eternal death. You know the secrets of our hearts: In your mercy hear our prayer, forgive us our sins, and at our last hour let us not fall away from you. In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to Almighty God our sister Icelyn; and we commit her cremains to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. And we beseech you in your infinite goodness to give us grace to live in your dear love and to die in your favour, that when your well beloved Son shall come again in judgement both this our sister Icelyn and we ourselves may be found acceptable in your sight. Grant this for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. All:
Amen.
Let us pray. Minister: Almighty God, with whom still live the spirits of those who die in the Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful are in joy and felicity: We give you heartfelt thanks for the good examples of all your servants, who, having finished their course in faith, now find rest and refreshment. May we, with all who have died in the true faith of your holy Name, have perfect fulfillment and bliss in your eternal and everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Minister: Merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the Resurrection and the Life: Raise us, we humbly pray, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; that when we depart this life we may rest in him, and at the resurrection receive that blessing which your well-beloved Son shall then pronounce: “Come, you blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world.” Grant this, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. All:
Amen.
Minister: Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the Spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. And this we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Minister: All:
Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon her.
Minister: All:
May she and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace Amen
Minister: The Lord bless her and keep her, the Lord make His face to shine upon her and be gracious to her, the Lord lift up His countenance upon her and give her peace. All: Amen.

Minister: Unto Him that is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy; to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Closing Hymn | Great Is Thy Faithfulness Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
(Chorus) Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided— Great is Thy faithfulness! Lord, unto me!
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Hymn | Abide With Me Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Thou on my head in early youth didst smile; And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile, Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee, On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour. What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word; But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord, Familiar, condescending, patient, free. Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
Come not in terrors, as the King of kings, But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings, Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea— Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Tribute to Mummy Mummy losing you was the hardest thing I ever had to endure. Despite the numerous signs you gave me, I chose to ignore them and I was not emotionally prepared when you left me on Friday. I think of you constantly, feeling the deep gaping void you left in me. You loved me unconditionally and you made my childhood so memorable. Thank you for instilling strong morals and Christian values in me. You were my biggest motivator and you always encouraged me to “aim for the stars”. Mummy you gave me a wonderful life and for that I am extremely grateful. You exposed me to travel, culture and the finer things in life. You always told me that you were going to ensure that I am not spoilt as an only child, and that I would become a strong, independent and professional woman. During my early childhood, I lived on several Family Islands with you and daddy. You were not happy with me changing schools so often. In your quest to ensure that I had stability, you made the ultimate sacrifice by sending me to a boarding school abroad at the tender age of nine (9) years. You got your desire because not only did I get a good education, I developed into a strong, independent woman who is able to excel both professionally and personally. You were so proud of my achievements and you demonstrated that. You were the most supportive, kind, caring and compassionate person I know. You loved your family and friends unconditionally. I always wondered where you got all that energy as I observed you working as a Nurse and still caring for your family, baking, cooking those scrumptious meals, sewing and gardening. When I introduced you to Glenn and eventually married him, you accepted him as your son. Quite frankly, sometimes I felt that the roles got reversed and I was the daughter in law. Secretly, I was so happy of the way you totally embraced him. Our three boys brought you so much joy and I could never repay you for what you did for our family. They truly know what it means to have an exceptional grandmother. As you aged and began experiencing health challenges, it was a honour for us to have you move into our home to nurture and care for you. Your grandchildren, son-in-law and caregiver took excellent care of you which is a testimony to how you treated them and how much they loved you. I am so happy that we had the privilege to care for you at home and that I was able to watch you peacefully and quietly slip into the arms of Jesus. Mummy I miss you terribly and my soul aches because of your absence. I am however comforted knowing that you are in a better place and that I have a guardian angel watching over me. Sleep on Mummy and take your well-deserved rest. I love you to eternity!! Your only child....Val 20 | Icelyn Maria Pratt | A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will
A Tribute to my Mother-in-Law Mummy, forty- three (43) years ago, I met you at your home in Stapledon Gardens after being introduced to you by your lovely daughter Val. You seemed so happy when you discovered that like you, I was from Andros. Deep Creek South Andros to be exact. Val and I were later married in 1981 and you invited us to stay at your home for a period in order to save toward getting our home in the shortest time. You made me feel so comfortable and I was so happy to see how much joy your 1st grandson brought to you ten (10) months later. Three (3) years later, Val and I later built our house next door to you in Stapledon Gardens. I felt so good living next to your home as we continued to strengthen and build our relationship. Eventually Val and I became the proud parents of three boys - Kwivan, Ryan and Brandon. I was so impressed with the professional way you presented yourself and being available for each one of them in your own way. Our boys love you so much. I will never forget your presence and support you gave to the three (3) boys during school events, ie. track and field, swim meets and prize giving. You were always there or in your absence enquired about “who won the race”. You made them feel so special and had a monetary prize for them even if they did not win the race. You were present at all of their graduations, from kindergarten to university. Your cooking was so good. The boys, Val and I will never forget those great tasting pots of crab and rice with steamed fish, cracked conch and everything else you prepared including sides. They were just so very tasty. Christmas and birthdays will never be the same without you. You attended almost every Christmas and New Year Eve Service with us up to 2018. We were so excited to attend these services as a family with you. I will never forget the sound advise you gave me and the extreme kindness you showed me over the last forty-three (43) years. Thank a million Mummy for everything. I shall never forget you and I miss you terribly...see you in heaven! Love, Glenn A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | Icelyn Maria Pratt | 21
Dear Grammy, That dreaded day has come. That day that I would unknowingly kiss your forehead and say I love you one last time! That day when I would sadly have to say goodbye. Saying goodbye is never easy, but you lived a God-fearing and full life. We were getting ready to celebrate our milestone 95th and 40th birthdays together like we always do, but God had other plans. You exceeded your three scores and ten and surpassed four scores and ten. I thank God for blessing me with your unwavering love for almost forty of the best years I can ever ask for. You taught me the true- life lessons on honesty, Christianity, humility, professionalism and most of all, manners and respect. Your heart was pure and full of gold. You always told me that “manners and respect will take you through the world” and “whatever you do in life, do it the best you can”. This was a proven fact the day I was able to represent us in Ireland all expenses paid! You are the true definition of strength. If strong was a person, it would be you. It was a privilege and an honour being one of your designated caretakers, and I’m sure you realized how much I completely enjoyed being able to be there for you every step of the way. Throughout this four-year experience with you, I discovered a new level of strength and endurance just by observing the fight you had within you. No matter what kind of day you were challenged with, you never gave up on life despite the countless and relentless obstacles that it threw at you. I admire how you pushed through and never gave up, and I will forever respect you for that Grammy. Starting this new beginning of life without you will definitely be the most difficult thing I have ever tried to accomplish, but thanks to you I’m doing it with a new- found strength. Many days I felt like no one in this world loved you more than me. I find comfort and peace in knowing you are resting now, free from all pain, medication, and physical challenges. You have truly earned your wings and I could not have asked for a more precious guardian angel. You were a true virtuous woman, one of the last of a dying breed. I loved you in life, and I love you even more in death. I pray that you continue to watch over our family, and that your sweet soul rests in peace. I truly believe, one glad reunion day, we will see each other again. I salute you Grammy, the greatest warrior I have ever met. From my lips to your soul, I will Always love you! Love Forever, Kwivan, your Christmas tree 22 | Icelyn Maria Pratt | A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will
Tribute to Grammy As I am now sitting here in my room where I was raised, I am writing the most heart wrenching, yet warming tribute to you. I can start many places, but I’ll begin by saying you are a legend of my time. I do not have much memories about the world as a baby, but I knew for sure I always loved you. I quickly learnt that you were my Grammy, you are Icelyn Maria Pratt, the greatest woman in the world! You took so much pride in taking care of your three grand boys. You always showed us that family is everything and Grammy, you loved your family more than anything. You demonstrated love in so many ways. I have never seen a lady who would do whatever she can to make someone smile. Grammy you gave the yard man cold drinks and lunch, and as a person who 1st attempted to clean the yard and almost had a heart attack, trust me, food and cold drink meant everything. I can go on about so many things about you, but they told me that my tribute can’t cover the entire book. I’ll make this as brief as I can. Grammy you retired to take care of me when I was born, you strolled me up and down the hills of Stapledon Gardens daily, took me to Primary School, you taught me how to hurry up bathe because its 5:00am, and school started at 8:30am. St. John’s College was a 3 minute drive that you turned into 15 mins because you refused to drive your car through the shortcut. Grammy, you taught me patience, love and wisdom. You picked me from up from school at the exact time you knew I would be ready for my cheeseburgers from Burger King and my Kool-Aid in the fridge, right in time for Sesame Street. Everybody loves you Grammy, your family, friends and those you went out of your way to help. Just the other day, the gas man asked for you, and said he missed you and missed delivering gas for you. The garbage man walked way in the back yard to collect and lift your garbage to the front, then placed your empty bin back in the back where it belonged. Anyone that knew my Grammy will know that she showed you true love. You will be remembered as a warrior, a strong woman, the greatest! Mummy will miss you. You took in my father like you gave birth to him, you took care of him. He will miss you. Your grand boys (your Christmas Tree, your Easter Egg, your Summer Breeze) will miss you. Your sister will miss you; Ms. Burrows will miss you, everybody you touched will miss you. Christmas will be tough without you. Fortunately, your spirit will live on within us now. Thank you for everything you taught me, when I officially decided to move in with you, the wisdom, conversations and knowledge will always be something I remember you for. I will never regret moving in with you and I will most certainly miss everything I did for you, from day 1 down to the very last day. I love you so much and I most certainly will miss you. Thank you Grammy. Love, Brandon, (Your Summer Breeze) A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | Icelyn Maria Pratt | 23
Tribute to Grammy I shall always remember you Grammy for your words of wisdom: “Whatever you do in life, do it the best you can.” “If someone is down, never push them further.” “Always be obedient. “Manners and behaviour take you through the world” “Always put God first and you can never go wrong.” Grammy, you were a God-fearing woman and were the perfect example of having faith. You were a strong woman and I always admired your strength and endurance. I am thankful for the way you took care of me from infancy to adulthood. You taught me right from wrong and how to be a responsible man. I am thankful for the way you cooked for us. I’ll never forget coming home from church to the most delicious meals you prepared for us with love. When you were unable to do so, I really missed it, although you never wanted to stop. My parents had a hard time convincing you that they can prepare Sunday lunch. Your warm personality will always live on in me. I am thankful for everything you did for me Grammy. We had our private moments that no one knew about. You were my strongest supporter and cheerleader when I was in school and ran track. You rewarded me every time I won and attended all my important school events. Mummy always told me that you paid my school fees in full from Kindergarten to my completion of high school. You encouraged me with my artwork and my music, and you took care of me when I was sick or had surgery. I remember as a young boy, I would always lie in your bed and that’s how you knew I was not feeling well. Grammy, you always believed in me and always made me feel special. I will never forget you. I love you with all my heart, and I am so happy that I had the opportunity to take care of you when you needed me. Sleep on Grammy and Rest in Peace. Love, Ryan
Tribute to My Sister Ice
My beautiful sister Ice, oh how I miss you! You were my confidant, best friend, and a sister I loved so dearly and respected to no end. We were inseparable. If there is one thing I always knew, death was the only reality that could and did separate you and I. Words cannot express how much I miss you and forever will. Our nights never ended without our exchanges of goodnight, which came to a sudden end when you were not well. After our retirement we spent a lot of time together as you chauffeured me around, paying bills and just enjoying each other’s company. I would forever be grateful for all the assistance and encouragement you gave my children and I over the many years. I especially enjoyed us worshipping together every Sunday, when we were able to attend church. I didn’t have to worry about getting home. You were always there ready to drive me home. We always had a “push in hand”, as we called it for each other, even if it was only a banana. Family was very important to both of us. Almost every Sunday while our uncle Stanley Coakley and Aunt Merle were alive, we would go to Lewis Street to collect our fresh baked bread and fellowship with them. Those were the good old days. Ice, I will truly miss you. You were a sister like no other. Rest in Peace Maxine Wright

Tribute to My One Good Auntie How blessed and fortunate I am to have had such a beautiful Auntie in my life. I have fond memories from early childhood with Auntie. She was always present. As long as I can recall, my Aunt was always assisting us with great counsel and financially. As I reflect, I am certain that she is the reason I chose Nursing as a profession. During my community rotation as a Senior Nursing student, I was assigned to work with her for a week. She and I decided to keep our relationship a secret, as Auntie wanted to mentor me and have the opportunity for us to spend quality time. This time together further cemented our relationship. As we drove from house to house, my aunt was constantly encouraging and advising me on issues not only related to nursing, but also on life lessons. Priceless! My regular allowance continued for years, until she was finally ready to accept that I was a working adult. Auntie was extremely private, so I was not allowed to divulge our business, as she would say. Auntie planted endless seeds in my life. I was honoured to give back to her, and it was a pleasure to offer Auntie gifts. Her response made me feel like it was the greatest gift in the world. With gratitude and much excitement, she couldn’t wait to show Val. Auntie was constantly baking pound and raisin cakes for my immediate family. Oh how I wish I had asked for the recipes. Those cakes were delicious! Christmas time was always very special, I would get a fruitcake in a special tin delivered by Auntie and Val. I was not allowed to collect the cake as she always wanted to deliver it. Although I witnessed Auntie’s health declining, I was blessed that she almost always recognized me, and would make reference to my husband and children. I feel truly blessed to have had the influence of my one good Auntie my entire life. Rest in peace Auntie Susan Cargill

My Good Auntie For over fifty years, I shared many fond memories with Auntie, which will last me a lifetime. As a child, I recall Auntie sending packages to mummy from Cat Island, of the native produce. In response to this, mummy would say “only the dirt Ice wouldn’t send from Cat Island”, and she was correct. Even though mummy made a good fruit cake, Auntie’s fruit cakes were always my favorite, because they were more spirited. As to Auntie’s raisin cakes, they could never be duplicated. The Easter Baskets were my favorite. Every Easter I would look forward to receiving one from Auntie. This tradition continued late into my teens and perhaps my early twenties. I loved it so much that even as a fully grown man I still looked with one eye, eagerly awaiting another Easter basket. Auntie, you will always ride with me as my car license plate number 5767 you gave to me. You’ve lived a good life! Rest in peace.
Dear Grammy,
Words cannot begin to describe the depth of gratitude I have for having had you in my life. I always admired your strength and independence. However, the thing that stands out the most for me is the generous person you were and the genuine relationships you established with the persons you called family or friend. One memory that stands out the most is that time when I saw you on the bus stop and offered that you should ride home with me. You seemed so committed to meeting the bus driver that you frequently drove with so that he could get the bag of pears that you had for him. Once you gave them to him, I saw a sense of relief on your face. Also, from the day that I fell in love with your crab and rice, there was never a time after this that you did not ensure that I had a plate of it before me whenever I came home. Not one time!!! In season or out. These instances demonstrated to me that you were committed to the relationships you developed. I will cherish the experiences that I have had with you, but most importantly the values that you possessed and held strong to. Sleep in heavenly peace Grammy. I love you and will miss not being able to sing Happy Birthday to you on November 7th or even your presences here on this earth moving forward. Physically you may not be here, but in spirit I am aware that you will still be watching over your family and friends. Love always Avard. 26 | Icelyn Maria Pratt | A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will
To my Dear Aunt Ice, From my birth we were always close, as you were present in the room when I was born and for the first year of my life, you, Val, my Mum Theodora, my Dad Ormond, and I lived together. From my earliest childhood memories, I have the fondest recollection of you, my sweet Aunt Ice, and loved your warm hugs, endearing smile, and gentle and kind demeanour. You until the very end were a great Aunt to me. You were always so very proud of my achievements, and I of yours, as you were the first healthcare professional in the family. You were an exceptional nurse and midwife, as you devoted most of your life helping others and led a life of service. I looked forward to my trips home and our longstanding tradition of you, Aunt Maxi, and me spending the day together. During those hours we would laugh and chat about anything and everything and strengthen our bond. I just loved being in your beautiful presence. In later years, whenever I video called to check on you, no matter how you were feeling, you always managed to give me a smile and say, ‘Manda, I’m so glad you called. How is Daniel?’ You were so very happy when my son, Daniel Theodore, was born. Whilst I am very sad of your passing, I have to remind myself of the wonderful life you led, which was full of purpose. Through your steadfast love of God and your family, I am comforted in the legacy that you leave behind in your beloved and faithful daughter Val, son Glen, and grandsons Kwivan, Ryan, and Brandon. You were rightly proud of each and every one of them and adored them. I miss you Aunty, but I know you are truly resting in peace, in the loving arms of our heavenly Father, and embracing your beloved parents and siblings who have gone on before you. I take comfort in all of our happy years together and beautiful memories, and the fact that I will see you again someday. Your loving niece, Dr. Ormanda Johnson (‘Manda’) A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | Icelyn Maria Pratt | 27
Aunty Ice We know the time has come for you to reunite with the Johnsons and Coakleys who always think they’re right. You’ve not lost the battle but simply join the fight. The angels have said calm down get on board and join this golden flight. Mommy is with her arms open standing in the line saying, “Ice, where is the raisin cake you know I like”. Smiling and thanking her for the Cat Island experience she gave Tony, Merce and Ann as brother Tony extends a warm hand. Merc became a doctor because of you she would say, thank God I was able to see that glorious day. Aunty Ice smiled when she remembers her visit to her sister Marguerite she was not allowed to speak until mom‘s favorite TV show was complete. They whispered so that I could not hear as children were seen and not heard and I dare not speak in fear. Dressed in her uniform, Aunty Ice embodied authority and was respected by all. Helped any and everyone as it was not only her profession but her call. We will miss Aunty Ice as she brought us fruits from her garden and a slice of her birthday cake, however we are happy that she is on board and has arrived to her heavenly home safe. The Dahls

he was a mother to my mom; the only grandmother I knew because both of mine were long gone. Small yet mighty.
The way she would cup your face, the yelp she’d let out when you walked in the house. She really made you feel loved and important and special. “SYMONE! You alright?!” She would look me over, pull my arms out to my sides and examine me, ask me about school and other things before putting a red and blue striped envelope in my hand. (If you’re West Indian, you know what it is.) And her pound cake!!... it was unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. My godbrothers and I destroyed one in a day. I’m grateful that we were able to see each other one last time. Rest well, Grammy. Until we meet again. from Symone
