The Life and Legacy of

JASMINE RUBY CLARKE-YOUNG BA, MAT June 22nd 1973 – April 10th 2011 Born on June 22nd 1973 to the parentage of George F. Clarke (deceased) and Movena Bowe – Clarke, Jasmine Ruby became the fourth of five siblings. As a child, Jasmine was a lover of animals and could often be found tending to sick creatures feeding them and nursing them back to health. She was always a lover of music and would write out the lyrics of songs so that she could sing them during bathe time. Values, morals, and discipline from a very early age were instilled Jasmine from her parents. She was said to get her work ethics from her mom, Movena and her sense of humor from her dad, George. George and Movena made necessary sacrifices to provide for all their kids. They encouraged them to always give of their best and ensured that they were equipped with all tools needed for them to be successful. During her formative years Jasmine attended St. Mathew’s Primary, and then went on to attend St. Anne’s High School. While at St. Anne’s school, Jasmine was the first to start a cheerleading squad, which has blossomed into a reputable and envied squad to this day. During a career day held at St. Anne’s school, Jasmine was one of many who were advised by Chef Chea to consider a career in the Culinary Arts. Jazz, as she was affectionately called, was intrigued and impressed by how she was advised; she also liked the “white jacket.” It was this dialogue that sparked her interest in the field of culinary and the rest is now

“May the work I’ve done Speak for Me” Words are inadequate to describe the life and times of this remarkable woman who meant so much too so many. She was undoubtly a hero. While a woman of humble beginnings, her life was marked by meaningful accomplishments.

history. Jasmine graduated from St. Anne’s in June of 1989 at the tender age of fifteen. Jasmine was first employed at Subway, while there her love for food and the industry grew. She enrolled into the Bahamas Hotel Training College, where she completed the apprenticeship program. Throughout her three year program she was sponsored by the then Merv Griffin Paradise Island Resort. In 1993, she enrolled in a Bachelor Degree program in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management at Johnson & Wales University; Providence, Rhode Island. Representing her university, she won a silver medal at the Boston Food Show. Jazz also placed first in another culinary competition held in London, England. For this competition she represented the United States of America but being Jazz, she asked her lecturer if she could represent The Bahamas instead. When told that she couldn’t, she decided to continue on anyway and walked away with a gold medal. After completing the Bachelor’s program at the age of twenty, she decided to stay and complete a master’s degree in Culinary Education. Jasmine became the first female Bahamian to earn this degree. In 1997 she received the most outstanding Pastry Student of the Year award and graduated as class valedictorian. As a result she delivered the commencement address.

During her graduate program, she lectured at the university and was asked to remain on as a member of staff upon completion. She also gained international exposure and worked for various hotel chains and organizations including the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Atlanta, Ga; the 1996 Olympic Games; The Boca Raton Resort and Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla and the Wyndham Hotel in San Diego, California as head chef. However, in 1998 Jasmine’s love for her country led her back home and she joined the then Sun International team as a Culinary Trainer. She was responsible for the recruitment and training of cooks and chefs and also assisted in the daily management of all kitchens. Jasmine continued to enjoy competing in culinary competitions and therefore became a team member

of the Atlantis Culinary

Team who won first place and two gold medals in the 2003 Culinary Classics. This achievement earned her an opportunity to represent the Bahamas once again and she became a member of the Bahamas National Culinary Team, which represented the Bahamas at the World Culinary Olympics. In Germany, October 2004 Jazz was responsible for the pastries for the competition and that year she and her fellow team members brought the Bahamas home a bronze medal. She described this as the biggest accomplishment in her entire career as a chef. “There is a lot to learn and an enormous sense of pride to represent your country at that level.” - Chef Jasmine There was no stopping the successes of this phenomenal woman as she received several promotions during her tenure at Atlantis. However, none was as special as her recent promotion to Executive Pastry Chef. Jasmine met Mr. Darrin Young in 1999 at a local hotspot; and she fell in love at first sight. She often spoke of his radiant smile and nice physique. The two dated for a few years, until they joined in Holy Matrimony on July 6th, 2002. Jazz and Darrin became inseparable, and often enjoyed doing everything together. Traveling together became a favorite pastime for the couple especially when they went to Harbor Island and although the thought of flying made Jazz nervous, she always felt safe and at ease as long as her Darrin was next to her. They also enjoyed attending church, and Jazz particularly enjoyed the praise and worship segment of the service. Jazz took pride and pleasure in preparing gourmet meals for her D Boy and Darrin always supported and accompanied Jazz during her many international competitions. This support and love was unwavering. When Jazz became ill, Darrin never left her side and became so knowledgeable on her condition that he was given the nickname Dr. Young. Jasmine was a disciplinarian and had a zero tolerance for foolishness. However, she still was the sweetest person one could encounter. Children couldn’t help but

hearts beat and was eagerly and anxiously awaiting their arrival. Jazz, began to experience complications and as a result she delivered her twins prematurely. She remained hospitalized for a period of six weeks. Jasmine fought a good fight, but her Heavenly Father called her home on Sunday April, 10th to join her twins. Darrin held Jazz’s hand as she slipped from time into eternity. Jasmine was pre-deceased by her father George F. Clarke Jr. and her twin son Darrin and daughter Joy. Left to remember her are:

love her, especially her nieces and nephews. They looked forward to her visiting and enjoyed her baked goodies she frequently made for them. She always gave abundantly and unselfishly. Anything that Jasmine’s name followed was something to be esteemed. Being the artsy person that she was she enjoyed decorating and event planning. She especially enjoyed planning family gatherings, but was always willing to help others make their event, party or wedding the “talk of the town”. She had an eye for fashion and would usually be seen in the trendiest styles, but what this “fashionista” enjoyed most was to wear anything that would “bling”; glitter and sparkles on everything, including cupcakes! Jazz developed many close relationships but none so close as that with her baby sister Joyelle. There was rarely a time that you saw one without the other. They were more than sisters they were best friends. A milestone in Jasmine’s life was when she found out she was expecting. It was one the happiest moments in her life and everyone that loved her celebrated in her happiness. She would always rejoice at that sound of hearing their

Order of Service RECEPTION OF THE BODY Priest:

With faith in Jesus Christ we receive the body of our sister JASMINE for burial. Our sister JASMINE was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly father, the giver of life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Priest: Let us pray.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister JASMINE. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pil grimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our lord.

People: Amen. OPENING SENTENCES: Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and who ever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His compassion never fails: every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23 Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, Believe also in me. John 14:1 I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, not anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether w live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9 We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21 The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deuteronomy 33:27

Opening Hymn | THROUGH ALL THE CHANGING SCENES OF LIFE Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still My heart and tongue employ.

Oh, make but trial of His love, Experience will decide How blest they are, and only they, Who in His truth confide.

Oh, magnify the Lord with me, With me exalt His name; When in distress to Him I called, He to my rescue came.

Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then Have nothing else to fear; Make you His service your delight, Your wants shall be His care.

The hosts of God encamp around The dwellings of the just; Deliverance He affords to all Who on His succor trust.

COLLECT FOR THE DEPARTED: Priest: Let us pray: Almighty God, we remember before you today Your faithful servant JASMINE; and we pray that, having opened to her the gates of larger life, you will receive her more and more into your joyful service, that, with all who have faithfully served you in the past, she may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN | BECAUSE HE LIVES God sent His son, they called Him Jesus He came to love, heal, and forgive. He lived and died to buy my pardon, An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. (CHORUS) Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, All fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living just because He lives. How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives. But greater still the calm assurance, This child can face uncertain days because He lives. And then one day I’ll cross the river, I’ll fight life’s final war with pain. And then as death gives way to victory, I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives. Hymn | O JESUS, I HAVE PROMISED O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: be thou ever near me, my Master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend.

O let me feel thee near me! The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O let me see thy footmarks, and in them plant mine own; My hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone. O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Savior and my Friend.

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Priest:

The Lord be with you.

All:

And also with you.

Priest:

Lift up your hearts.

All:

We lift them up to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All:

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, Everlasting God:

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of life eternal. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

All:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Priest: Sovereign Lord and Father, to you be glory and praise for ever. In your boundless wisdom you brought creation into being; In your great love you fashioned us in your image; In your tender com passion you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, to share our human nature; In the power of the Holy Spirit, He overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of your new creation.

On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Priest: Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved Son. All:

We remember His death. We proclaim His resurrection We await His coming in glory.

Priest:

And we offer you, Father, our sacrifice of thanks and praise. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus our Lord and Redeemer. As we partake of this holy food of new and unending life, may your Holy Spirit establish us as a royal priesthood with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John The Baptist and all your sons and daughters who share in your eternal inheritance; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All:

Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours forever and ever. Amen.

With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise:

THE LORD’S PRAYER Priest: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray: All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Priest: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All:

Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

THE INVITATION Priest: My brothers and sisters in Christ, draw near and receive His Body which He gave for you, and His Blood, which He shed for you. Remember that he died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All:

Grant us gracious Lord, that we may so eat the flesh of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and drink His Blood, that we ever more dwell in Him and He in us. Amen.

THE COMMUNION AGNUS DEI: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant them rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant them rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant them rest eternal. COMMUNION HYMNS AND CAN IT BE And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain— For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains feel off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

’Tis mystery all: thee Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach thee eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace— Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me!

HOW SWEET THE NAME OF JESUS SOUNDS

I VOW TO THEE MY COUNTRY

How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear.

I vow to thee, my country—all earthly things above— Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; ‘tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary, rest. Dear Name, the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace!

And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago— Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Priest and King, my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring. Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see thee as thou art, I’ll praise thee as I ought. Till then I would thy love proclaim with every fleeting breath; and may the music of thy Name refresh my soul in death!

POST COMMUNION PRAYER ALL:

Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Post Communion Hymn | AS THE DEER As the deer panteth for the water So my soul longeth after thee You alone are my hearts desire And I long to worship thee (CHORUS) You alone are my strength my shield To You alone may my spirit yield You alone are my hearts desire And I long to worship thee You’re my friend and You are my brother, Even though you are a king. I love you more thank any other, So much more than anything. I want You more than gold or silver, Only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy Giver, And the apple of my eye. THE COMMENDATION The President and other minister take their place at the body. All are required to stand. Priest: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant, JASMINE, with your saints. All:

Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

Priest:

You only are immortal, the creator and maker of mankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All:

Give rest, O Christ, to your servant JASMINE with your saints. Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

Priest: Lord have mercy. All:

Christ have mercy.

Priest: Lord have mercy. Priest: Our Father in heaven. All: Hallowed be Your name… Priest:

Let us commend our sister JASMINE to the mercy of God our Maker and Redeemer. Deliver your servant, JASMINE. Recessional Hymn | Our God Reigns How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him Who brings good news, good news; Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness: Our God reigns, our God reigns! (CHORUS) Our God reigns! Our God reigns! Our God reigns! Our God reigns! He had no stately form, He had no majesty That we should be drawn to Him. He was despised and we took no account of Him. Our God reigns, our God reigns! It was our sin and guilt that bruised and wounded Him. It was our sin that brought Him down. When we like sheep had gone astray our Shepherd came And on His shoulders bore our shame. Meek as a lamb that’s led out to the slaughterhouse, Dumb as a sheep before its shearer, His life ran down upon the ground like pouring rain That we might be born again. Out from the tomb He came with grace and majesty; He is alive, He is alive. God loves us so, see here His hands, His feet, His side Yes we know, He is alive.

Graveside HY MN S

WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. (CHORUS) It is well, it is well, With my soul, with my soul, It is well; it is well, with my soul.

CITY OF GOLD There’s a city of Light, where there cometh no night; ‘Tis a city of beauty untold; All my treasures are there and its beauty I’ll share, When I get to that city of gold.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

(CHORUS) When I leave all trouble and care, I will say good morning up there; I will have great gladness untold, When I get to that city of gold

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

There’s no sorrow up there in that city so fair And no sickness can enter I’m told; Shadows all will have flown, I will meet friend I’ve known When we get to that city of gold.

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul.

Won’t you go there with me to the home of the free, Would you see heaven’s beauty unfold? If you will come along, we will sing heaven’s song When we get to that City of gold.

HE’LL UNDERSTAND AND SAY WELL DONE

IT’S ALRIGHT NOW

If when you give the best of your service, Telling the world that the Savior has come, Be not dismayed when men don’t believe you. He understands; He’ll say, “Well done!”

There was a time I travelled a lonely sinful road; Beneath a heavy burden bending low; But now all things are different, since Jesus took my load It’s alright now, I’m His I know.

(CHORUS) O when I come to the end of my journey, Weary of life, and the battle is won, Bearing the staff and cross of redemption, He’ll understand and say, “Well done!”

(CHORUS) It’s alright now, for I am in my Saviour’s care It’s alright now; my Saviour hears and answers prayer He’ll walk with me, (He’ll walk beside me) Till I climb the heavenly stair, And everything (And everything is alright now)

When you are tried, so weak and discouraged, Turn to the cross--see the Father’s own Son. Look up in love and say with Your Savior, “Not my own will, but Yours be done.” Trials will pass; they soon will be over. Pain will be gone and the glory begun. Then we will see the King in His beauty. Bowing, we’ll hear, “My child, well done!”

And down a lonely pathway, without a friend to guide, I walked in sin and sorrow all alone ‘Till Jesus came and found me, and drew me to His side; It’s alright now, for I’m His own. No more in sin I wander, no more in darkness roam The Lord has placed my feet on higher ground; Each day new heights I’m gaining, my soul is nearing home, It’s alright now, I’m heaven bound.

GLAD REUNION DAY There will be a happy meeting in heaven I know When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below. Gather on the blessed hilltops with hearts all aglow. That will be a glad reunion day. (CHORUS) Glad day, a wonderful day, Glad day, a glorious day; There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay, That will be a glad reunion day. There within the holy city we’ll sing and rejoice, Praising Christ the blessed Saviour with heart and with voice. Tell him how we came to love Him and make Him our choice. That will be a glad reunion day. When we live a million years in that wonderful place Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face. It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace. That will be glad reunion day.

How could I live life without you? That was something that I had never planned to do. It’s like trying to win a game without your MVP, planting a seed and not getting a tree, having eyes but just can’t see. Hopeless! But hopeless, less the less, is hope. Hope of a brighter day, because you sent your candle of love my way. What can I say? You absolutely took my breath away! Each night I pray, thanking the Lord for you my Boo! As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder, but each day without you feels longer and longer. Jasmine (Boo) my love, I never thought that I could love someone so much in all my life! You were truly a blessing and I thank God for putting such an interesting, caring, loving, funny person in my life. Honey, it’s going to hurt me to the depths of my soul to not have you here with me, but it soothes me to know that I now have my guardian angel smiling down at me and that you’re in a better place with your Daddy. Jasmine, there were so many aspirations and dreams you had for your life. I will miss the nights cuddling, talking about our future plans, the laughter and the hugs we shared and the simple things we enjoyed while bonding. You were not only my soul mate, you were my best friend. You epitomized the word friend and I’m sure anyone who knew you would say the same. I was able to come to you and tell you anything and talk to you about anything. You were there to encourage me and lift me up whenever I was feeling down. Before I met you, I couldn’t even boil water (as the old folks say). You taught me how to cook, and you often bragged to family and friends about my cooking skills! I’m going to miss looking into those beautiful

eyes that just seem to always say to me I love you. Jasmine, you made me laugh hysterically; it was as if you were my personal comedian. I’m going to miss the times that you would call me just to tell me that you miss me and love me and send me kisses through the phone. I will truly miss the times spent with you! Despite all the tears and heartache, I’m smiling. I’m smiling at the fact that I was able to celebrate you and your wonderful life. I’m smiling at the fact that you were the best female friend anyone could ask for and an even greater wife. I’m smiling because I know that if you were here that’s what you would want me to be doing.

Jasmine, I will never forget you. You’re etched in my thoughts, dreams, and heart and I would give anything to be with you right now. But I know that you are in a better place and I am longing for that day to be with you; and I will be longing for that day until we are together again. I will forever cherish the memories of you. You have left an indelible impression on my life and everyone else’s. There are no words to express my love for you. You know you were my forever friend, my heart’s string, my wife, my angel, my BOO! You will always be in my heart now and forever, until I see you again.

LOVE YOU FOREVER, D-Boy (as she called me)

To my Jas’

Mommy understands everything. Safe in the arms of Jesus, Safe on His gentle breast Mommy Loves you, But Jesus says He loves you BEST. See you soon. Love, Mum.

My Jazz

My big sister – My best friend My special twin, and no doubt, my other half. To God be the glory, great things he hath done. I was blessed to have had the world’s greatest sister, one who made life so simple, exciting and easy for me, always keeping one step ahead, leading and guiding with courage, discipline, strength and love. For 36 years, I never had to worry about needing a friend to play with, or someone to talk to, as Jazz was always there. Some people thought that Jazz n’ Joy was one name as one name was never called without the other. There were others who might just find out today that we are not biological twins. As children, we ensured that all of our friends knew that if they wanted to be one of our friends, they would have to take 2nd place as 1st place was always taken. What a fantastic childhood it was! As I reflect, I gain strength in knowing that we left no stone unturned, we did it all; Sunday school, brownies, girl guides, Red Cross fairs, summer school, vacations, confirmation classes, horse back riding and list could go on for days. Jazz read to me, helped with homework, and was my coach and mentor for what I thought would be forever. She definitely led by example and exemplified the true meaning of the term “Big Sister” She was so organized and talented. Yet there was that side that always made me laugh. We often laughed until we cried, and never forgot to express our love for each other. For a very long time, we had the same dreams, the same goals, same favorite color and even the some of the same clothes, which never stopped. It wasn’t until she decided to venture into the “chef” world that our lives would take different paths, but that was nothing that $2,000.00 phone bills couldn’t fix! I am so delighted that the words “I Love you” were not difficult for at all. They were the last words we exchanged before she was admitted to ICU. Throughout Jazz’ many accomplishments, she remained humble and would often forget to tell the family about some of them. She was the most giving person ever, and always wanted the best for everyone, even if it was at her expense. Jazz proved that desire, drive, and determination are super recipes for success. She would always complete anything she set out to do, and would see to it that it was carried out exceptionally well. She prepared herself mentally, socially and spiritually, for every task, challenge, or obstacle that she could foresee. About a year ago, Jazz was making big preparations, a slow and steady switch.

She traded wine with cranberry juice, Barrington Levi C.D’s with BB and CC career oriented advice with spiritual advice pastry books with the Bible. Jazz told me everything, but not this one. Preparations for heaven Jazz? It never crossed my mind. The way I see it, you left me with two choices – Go completely insane or live the life you paved for me. You did it! You go girl! Your earthly accolades as you always said were no match for getting into glory. I am so proud of you Jazz, and I will try to be strong for you as I know that you are in a far better place. She was just as determined in being a super mom to aunty Joy’s little stunkins. When God called the twins home a few weeks back, I couldn’t help but to think about the difficult task that lie ahead. How was I to help Jazz recover from such a loss? Was this one thing that Jazz wouldn’t get to carry out the way she did everything else? It would be devastating. But Jazz being the woman that she is, had other plans. She decided that the only way to carry out her plan would be to join her children in heaven where grandpa, God parents and close friends will all be waiting with milk and honey. Take your rest Jazz Thanks for waiting for the final I Love you and that final Goodbye Love Joyelle

Jazz,

WOW! It took me a long time to bring pen to paper. I guess doing this made it real and I didn’t want it to be real, Jazz. Even though my heart is extremely full, I’m still thankful that God loaned you to us for 37 wonderful years. You were a great friend, confidant, financial planner, career mentor and life coach, and most of all SISTER. Having you as a sister was like having 3 different girl friends. Jazz, you didn’t have a selfish bone in your body; you would give anyone your last of anything if you had it and then teach them what to do to get it (*smile*). Even though we were miles apart, we tracked each other down, fed off each other, and gave each other advice on lots of stuff. As I write this, I can hear you coaching me through my tears and joking, “dis ga be long”. I lost a part of me, Jazz, and I will miss calling you, emailing you at work or texting you and making Atlantis track you down just so we could talk. You will always be a part of me. Heaven captured a great soul.

Love you sooooo much Jazz! GG

A BIG SISTER’S TRIBUTE I am most honored to write this tribute to my sister, Jasmine, but deeply, deeply, deeply saddened. I do not know what to do with myself. I am moved, shocked, confounded, disappointed and at times angry. An epistle or a novel would be far more adequate for you to see my sister Jasmine was the epitome of a phenomenal woman. She started out that way. She was mommy’s biggest baby. I used to pretend she was my baby, too. I explained to her that a puppy had taken her bottle; this was to help to wean her. Then I taught her the saying of the day, “Don’t start that”. This came out in her baby talk as, “Don’t tart that,” and later she put her own spin on it and used to say, “Don’t coconut tart dat!” The Fashionista – Jazz loved fashion and had a keen sense of style that can be best classified as ‘diva’, a style that contradicted the profile of a person as accomplished as she, and so loved by all. Bottom line is if it wasn’t “blingin’’, she was mostly unimpressed. I guess she knew what goes with star-like qualities. The Entertainer – Jazz loved karaoke and family gatherings. She would often call just when I had arrived home from school pick up to tell me she was off and was by Mommy and that we all must come down there. At Christmas time, Jazz was Santa Clause to her nieces and nephews – and gave so many toys and gifts it would take almost a committee to organize it. She would structure our Christmas gatherings into a variety show and she would be the headline comedian. Jazz’s jokes were not for the weak. They could render one hoarse, tearful, spluttering and begging for mercy to catch one’s breath. By the end

of the joke we would be on the floor laughing so hard it sounded like crying. Sister – Jazz was a sister with the biggest heart ever. She waited for Celine, Sandor and Simone to reach her before decorating cupcakes, just to let them savor the moment in watching her put a rich dollop of icing on them and let them sprinkle it with disco sparkles. How happy (and late) we were!! Chef – To say she was accomplished is an understatement. Jazz helped to make The Bahamas proud when the team came back with the bronze medal. Daddy and Uncle David were beside themselves when she got the Cacique Award. When I saw my sister speak as Valedictorian on stage with people like Julia Child, I knew what her career path would be like. Last Christmas in the midst of singing carols, Jazz broke out singing a gospel song that I love called, “Perfectly Whole”. I told her that I did not know she knew the song. She told me that she had learned it from hearing me sing it. And so, Jazz, one of my sweet baby sisters, you lived up to a name: Jasmine, a sweet smelling flower, and Ruby, a precious gem. My greatest tribute will be foremost to live a life so I can see you again. To complete my law studies and earn other diplomas and to raise three globally equipped children in your spirit of excellence. I will be an attorney of note and fearless? Absolutely!! Love you so much, Jazz! I know you’re with Jesus and you’re in heaven with the babies. Lyn

Jaz, words cannot express how I feel. You were more than a sister-in-law to me. You were a sister, and my kids loved you dearly. Holly will certainly miss the cupcakes you made for her, and DJ will miss cleaning your car. He just cleaned it for you last week! Everytime someone knocks on my back door now, I remember you knocking and calling me to sample some of your tasty pastries that you were experimenting with. Whenever I would ask your opinion of one of my cooking experiments, I would say “I ain’t no Chef Jaz but I can surely keep you alive”! My brother, oh my brother. You completed my brother. You were his soul mate. He adored you. My family will never be the same again. You blended in as a permanent fixture. You did it in style, Jaz. You left while the crowd was still standing. May your soul forever rest in peace. God knows best. Tab (as you affectionately called me)

OLAYUNKA LOVES YOU JAZZMUNCA! My eyes filled up with tears and I screamed as I heard the news; My head felt like it was exploding. It never occurred to me how much I could lose. I find myself thinking that this could not be real; Every time I think about it, I’m in disbelief - pain is all I feel; Tears fall from my eyes, swollen and puffy, I can barely see; But my heart tells me that you’ll always be with me. I’m glad you feel no pain now - you live in a perfect land. Wow! Not Executive Chef but Heaven’s Chef; Jazz you’re now sitting at his right hand. Trying to get a grip, I lie in bed and cry at night, And I don’t feel any better in the morning light, And I will love and miss you forever, Until the day we are again together, Together in that perfect place above Filled with caring, sharing and love; But until that day comes- I will wipe my tears away, And hopefully see you again someday. Jazz, you have taught me so many a lessons like none other. And because of you I will devote myself even more to being the best mother. I love you Jazz, Yinka (From OlaYinka Burrows)

To an INCREDIBLY special friend… It was such a pleasure to have shared life’s path with you. You understood so much, so naturally. We all helped to keep each other grounded but as the “mother” of the group we relied more on you. You helped us to keep our feet on the ground, our hopes in our hearts, and our faith in tomorrow. Not that we hadn’t realize just how special you were to us then, we now realize that the most unique individual from the group is no longer with us and for that we can not help but feel a sense of emptiness…

Jazz,

It was a privilege to have been apart of your life, sharing all the things we shared in our time together. One of the nicest things in my entire life was having a friend like you. You have never been anything less than amazing to me and you were truly a beautiful person inside and out. I will miss your presence greatly but I’m happy to have priceless memories to hold on to.

Love Val Mini Me, as the “infant” of the group it saddens me to have to write this knowing its purpose, however, I do find joy in knowing that I have not only been privileged but would definitely call it nothing short of a blessing to have encountered such a rare individual as yourself. You are undoubtedly an extraordinary individual because you held so many posts in my life (and others) – you were my manager, my mentor, my counselor, and MOST importantly my friend and you truly exemplified the meaning of this term used so carelessly these days. You gave unconditionally of yourself and one would have been a fool not to absorb, retain, and take advantage of your willingness to help, hold, and lead. You have indeed helped me to grow and develop both personally and professionally and for this I say many thanks. Jazz, you will always hold a very special place in my heart. I will miss you dearly… I love you girlie.

Chara I wasn’t prepared for you to go you were too full of life to be taken away from us so soon. It’s still hard to believe how much I will miss your smile and you laughter. You taught me so much about life and how to be the best and to live in the moment, to never hold a grudge for long and loyal friendship. Being in your presence was a light and joy. You were a great example of the best way one can live. Your generous, loving spirit was a daily gift you chose to give. And I was privileged to know someone so dear a true friend throughout the years. I will always remember the good times we shared. Love you Jazz.

Friends,

This is shocking news Heart breaking and so unfair. Strangely enough Chef Neace and myself were talking about the Bahamas and the wonderful people who have stolen our hearts with their warmth and friendship. During the conversation we started talking about the apprentices and the wonderful chefs that the apprenticeship program has produced. We were also talking about the great food the Bahamian chefs produce everyday and in competitions. I suddenly thought about Jasmine and her devotion to the apprentices at Atlantis, and her willingness to go the extra mile for them. What a wonderful example she was and in every part of her life she could only see the good in people and their potential. Personally I will sorely miss her, so Jasmine you taught your apprentices that everything was possible and to shoot for the moon, so dearest Jasmine sleep amongst the stars you leave us all better people for knowing you, and enjoy your children in heaven with the lord. God bless you, Chef John Kinsella CMC WGMC ACE PhD Les Disciples D’ auguste escoffier Senior Chef Instructor ACF National Past President

The gift of time we should cherish as the gift of life may pass, The gift of love will never end as long as memories last. We love you ‘Jazz’ for making Illusions Hair Loft your family away from home; for the thirteen years of loyal patronage, we love you. We consider it a privilege that you helped to keep the legacy of ‘Dru’ alive. As I remember what seems like yesterday, your routine every visit after every visit consisted of a powder of the face, glossy lips and on goes your new pair of posh sunglasses, (be it day or night!). Oh, and let’s not forget this is all followed by your DIVA strut and stride across the floor. As so many could remember, your personality remained the same - true, genuine and all smiles. May your pleasant memories live on ‘Jazz’ as you go to reunite with your favorite stylist to brighten up the beautiful skies. Smile on ‘Jazz’, The family and patrons of Illusions

To My College Buddy, Jasmine The premature death of Jasmine is the worse thing one could ever deal with and I was so saddened to find out that you were gone! My heart was broken in pieces. I met Jasmine at Johnson & Wales University in 1995 and she was this slim tiny young girl, beautiful as a rose, strong minded, energetic, intelligent, and full of life and was such a goal oriented person. Her personality stood out everywhere she went and always fit into any crowd or environment and everyone would just adore her presence. Jasmine always strived for the best and never settled for less and was such perfectionism with everything she did. She just had to get it right every time and would start over until she does if she had too! Jasmine was available to help anyone with anything and was so humble and just a wonderful human being despite how busy her schedule was and always seemed to find time. When you’re down, she always thought of the most positive things to say that would lift your spirit. She reminded me that life was short and be happy with your life at that present moment, regardless your situation or circumstances, love yourself regardless and make good use of what you have until your situation becomes better. She reminded me that if I am not happy with something, then change it until I am satisfied. Jasmine use to say “Trisha” you can do anything you wish as long as you put your mind to it i.e. when she dared me to sing the national anthem at our graduation at J&W in 1997 and told me that I will do great as long as I practiced and believe in myself. I did an awesome job as I remembered when I turned around and looked at her when I was done singing, there she was with the biggest smile so proud of me. At this very same graduation, Jasmine was valedictorian

and I was so happy and amazed to have witnessed such a talented young woman delivering the most amazing speech I’ve every heard. Since then, all I’ve been hearing was amazing stories about her when she returned back to her hometown in Nassau. Jasmine has no selfish bone in her body and what she wants for herself she always wants for others as well. She has the best teaching skills and makes you so comfortable that you’re determined and eager to learn as much as you can and she made sure you understood everything she taught. Jasmine was one of the most intelligent people I’ve known personally and whatever she did, she puts her heart and soul into it and make sure it’s above and beyond anyone’s expectations. Jasmine always reached out to everyone around her and was an angel in disguised. Jazz, I don’t know why you left us so prematurely, but thank you for being such a wonderful friend, coworker, teacher, chef, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, niece, cousin, grandchild, godchild, godmother, daughter, daughter-in-law loving wife and wonderful mother as I am sure you are with your beautiful children today. We love you so much and we will miss dearly for your memories will forever live on. Your college buddy: Patricia Buntin

Message of Gratitude

“God shall wipe all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” - Revelation 21:4 We are assembled here today not to mourn the passing of our beloved Jasmine but rather to celebrate her life. She has undoubtedly touched the lives of many of you and we were all blessed to have known her as a daughter, sister, wife, and friend. To those who have shown your love and sympathy and given us support during this challenging time, we humbly say thank you. Without your many prayers, blessings, and words of encouragement, our family would not be able to stand strong in the midst of our sorrow. Jasmine’s light of life may now be dimmed, but there lies comfort in knowing that her memory shall prosper in your thoughts and hearts. We ask that you continue to remember us in prayer as we will remember you. May God bless you all!

“There’s never a dull moment”

“I’m Down to earth...after I get to know you. Some people think I’m snobbish and self centered until they get to know me. Well maybe I am just a little tiny winy bit! But I don’t mean to be. I’m honest, frank and to the point. I’m a workaholic.. can’t help it, check my mom. Anything that I commit to with my heart, I give it my all. I would bend over backwards for those I love. I love my Husband Darrin, he is a sweet soul who is the ying to my yang. My other half is my sister Joy. She is my “twin” sister only born a year and a half after me. I love the beach, boating and watersports. I try to surround myself with positive, mature people who don’t have issues or at least know how to handle their issues. I have been blessed in so many ways I can’t begin to list. I’m grateful for where God has brought me and where he will take me.”
