Karen Althea Nottage Heaven Has Gained an Angel Those special memories of you will always bring a smile, if only we could have you back for just a little while, Then we could sit and talk again just like we used to do, you always meant so very much, and always will do too, The fact that you’re no longer here, will always cause us pain, but you’re forever in our hearts until we meet again. ~Unknown Author
The Birth of a Leader
The Beauty of Childhood and Teenage Years
On the phenomenal morning of Thursday, 23 March, 1961, a ravishing 7lbs 6oz baby girl was born to proud parents Veronica Hall and Henry Johnson, in beautiful 5th St. Coconut Grove Nassau, Bahamas. She was given the name Karen Althea. A born, valiant leader from birth, “Kay” as she was affectionately called, was the eldest child of her mother’s ten esteemed children: establishing protocol, a stern, yet fair demeanor, an ethical and civil mindedness amongst her siblings from day one.
A “fashionista” at heart, this beauty had a riveting and fascinating life while coming of age. A community socialite, and the stern mentor of her siblings, Kay was always fearless, courageous and loved by all. She adored her siblings, yet she was especially close to her sisters Wendy and Marcel. She referred to Wendy as her “hand and foot, or Wenlene”, while Wendy in return would refer to her as “Titta”. Marcel was always known as her pillar of strength in many ways. An undaunted tomboy, but a refined lady at heart, Kay was not afraid to take a chance at anything, whether it was riding a box cart, or a bicycle. However, despite her adventurous spirit, her sophistication would still allow her to tackle the chore of washing clothes, while Wendy on the other hand, would battle the chores of tidying the home and caring for the younger siblings. Mischievous at heart, Kay was well-known for her singing, teasing and taunting chants with big sister Dr. Zelrona “Zelly” Mackey. She would “pick a fight” with Zelly, and run to lock the door in fear of Zelly’s playful wrath ‘reigning down’ upon her.
The Training of a Shining Star Kay received her early education at Wentworth Primary and then on to H.O. Nash Jr. High. She then accelerated to C.C Sweeting Sr. High School, where she completed her studies in 1978. At this pivotal moment in her life her desire for fashion began. In her final year of high school, she entered the Miss C.C. Sweeting beauty pageant, with a placement of second runner up. This shining star exemplified beauty, fashion and elegance.
Kay was undoubtedly Coconut Grove’s social elitist, so much so that her siblings, would refer to themselves 4

as “Kay’s sister/brother.” She knew everyone! A trait and popularity that would remain with her until the very end. As a teen, she also loved church and prayer meetings and always dragged Wendy behind her. Kay had an avid love for God from her youth, and always felt as if she needed a word from Him. Kay loved her family and spent lots of time with siblings (both maternal and paternal). She always made time for other close family members and friends and made it a point that her family knew who she was and celebrated in their accomplishments. Everyone was special to Kay, but she held a special place in her heart for her aunt Shirley, who she considered “Her partner in crime”, her cousin Joy, who was a best friend and sister, her cousin Tontie, another best friend and sister, and her friends GQ and Vaughan (whom she considered brothers). She also loved her work family and proudly spoke about Ann, Ms. Stubbs, Nay, Agenor, Bastian and Baby Tommy to name a few.
The Contributions of a National Civil Servant, and Stewardship of a Community and Civic Leader An individual with extraordinary passion and diligent work ethics, this remarkable young woman, on high school summer breaks and upon graduating senior high school, amalgamated with Mrs. Gwendolyn Colebrook, a dear neighbor, to work at a private residence in Lyford Cay. This would be Kay’s first official job. Not long after this, Kay’s spark to “serve and protect” would ignite. This would inspire her to enlist in the Royal Bahamas Police Force (R.B.P.F) in 1979, and following graduation from the Police Training College she was posted to The Traffic Police Division. She stood out as a gem in her uniform as she directed vehicular traffic downtown Nassau. Here, she would remain for the majority of her career. Ambitious, adventurous, fearless and determined, this noble hero possessed integral qualities that led her to be enrolled in the motorcycle training program. This “superwoman” became one of the first female Police motorcyclists in The Bahamas. As a valiant leader, she assisted with paving the way for young females in the country. of allowing young women to realize their potential, and to believe that anything good could be achieved through dedication and hard work. Her mantra was always to God the Almighty father first and foremost in one’s life. She accomplished these with eloquence and noble standards. For no one wore the police uniform with elegance, style and charisma, like Kay. Always striving to be the best at whatever she set her mind to, Karen was sharp as a razor when it came to traffic matters, thorough and precise with any matter at hand. Her diligence and untiring efforts elevated her to the rank of sergeant.
The Devoted Wife, Mother And Grandmother
Karen worked at various divisions throughout the Force inclusive of: The Southern Division; The Police Canteen Office and the Mobile Division, where she would remain until her retirement in February of 2015 after thirty-five years (35 years) of civil leadership.
Once Kay was in the car, he bellowed out to Kay these exact words, “You’re pretty police girl nah, one day, I will marry you!” They went on their first date a few days later which was for ice cream at The Howard Johnson, Cable Beach. Randy held on to his words and on Friday October 11th, 1985, this pair were joined in Holy Matrimony at 7a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, Meeting Street.
Civil Leadership and community stewardship would implore Kay to join the Police Reserve as a retired sergeant. Her tenacity, impeccable drive and work ethics would then lead her to be in charge of the records section at The Traffic Division. Officers relied on, and respected her expertise in traffic matters. Unless otherwise known, she would have certainly been thought of as a regular serving officer. These astonishing traits led to her promotion as an R/Inspector in 2015, and then to R/Assistant Superintendent (A.S.P) in September of this year (2021). This extraordinary woman served her country with honor. She lived and served with the highest possible standards.

In January 1984, Kay met the love of her life. A dashing prince charming that came to sweep her off of her feet. Both were living at the Police Headquarters at the time, also known as “The Bungalow”. This beauty was standing, patiently waiting for a ride to proceed to the hairdresser. Being the well-kept attractive woman that she was, she attracted the attention of a fellow officer Mr. Randy Nottage. Approaching her respectfully, he would then offer her a ride to the hairdresser after engaging in short conversation.
This union were blessed with two children, Rashad Randy, and Ramon Rashawn Nottage. Kay loved her family, with all her heart, mind, body and soul. She held her vows close to her heart, and stuck through the good and bad. Her boys were also given nothing but the best, inclusive of teaching them about Christ. Despite her love for her children, her grandchildren were “The apples of her eyes”. Her granddaughters Rshae and Ramiya spent more time with her, and they went everywhere together, most times identically dressed or coordinating with her. Every Sunday, after church, it became tradition for her, and Jackie Hall along with their granddaughters to dine out for
breakfast. She referred to Shae as the “Mother Hen”. Kay taught her how to how to cook, run her everyday affairs, wash clothing (which became her expertise), and shop but mainly to supervise Miya and RJ. She loved RJ wholeheartedly and he was always her concern. She often bragged about how well he did in Track & Field and how she knew that one day he would make them proud. During her illness Shae became her caregiver, and spent a lot of time with her, most especially while away attending doctor’s appointments. Kay and Randy’s love for one another was priceless. Her love for him was unquestioning, as her last words according to the physician were, “Tell my son to take care of his daddy.” The Faithful Servant Kay loved the Lord and served him faithfully. She grew up in church; however, a few years after marrying Randy, her family made Mt. Tabor Church their home. Again, a well known person and loved by all she came into contact with, she became a dedicated member of the church’s Sanctuary Choir. She was also the wife of Pastor Randy Nottage, a title she upheld with honor. This remarkable and faithful servant loved God, and placed him at the forefront of her life. Despite the trials and tribulations, she encountered within her life, she always maintained that her Lord and savior was in control.
parties. She hosted and starred in fashion shows with her big sister, Dr. Zelrona Mackey.
A Fashion Icon
Her love for fashion led to the opening of her own clothing store, “Essence of Kay”, where the trendiest African attire (which she wore like no one else), amongst other fashionable items were sold. She was the “African Queen of The Bahamas.” This fashion guru would then travel far and wide to enhance personal fashion designs, clothing and accessories. She had a wardrobe fit for a queen, nothing less of style, elegance and sophisticated grace.
A “fashionista” and lady of sophistication and refinement, when she stepped out, she not only turned heads, but stopped hearts! An integral part of the fashion world, Kay was active in organizing and judging numerous tea
Her adoration for fashion would also lead to a very integral part of her life. In 2008, she met Sharlene, a beautiful young lady that she would become extremely fond of, and sponsor in the Miss Gospel Bahamas

The Passion for Living Kay loved life and always celebrated herself. It was of importance that she treated herself to something new for every occasion. Her remarks would exclaim, “This is for me.”
pageant. Sharlene wore the title “Miss Essence of Kay” and model custom made attire purchased by her loving sponsor. Due to their similar personalities, and interests, they instantly become friends, and shortly thereafter, she would be referred to by Kay as her “adopted daughter”. They would spend every weekend together and soon, everyone she knew, knew Sharlene as her “daughter”. Sharlene became very vital for Kay. A Valiant Warrior In 2018, this warrior after experiencing severe back pain; had a series of tests executed. The results led to among other medical issues a hip replacement surgery. The year of 2019 for Kay, was spent travelling back and forth attending doctor appointments at Cleveland Clinic. The surgery was undergone, and she recuperated well. A person who loved life to the utmost, Kay fought from not being able to walk, to utilizing a wheelchair, to a walker, then a cane and miraculously on her own again. Once she was feeling stronger, she joined a workout group, “Jazzie’s Fit For Life”, to maintain her health and strength. She enjoyed every moment of her workout sessions, and always fought never to miss a workout session; an eminent fighter indeed.

Determined to have a sixtieth (60th) birthday party this year, 2021, yet concerned about the limitation of only being able to invite thirty (30) persons (because she knew so many people) this was such a challenge. Yet, she had to execute, as it is certain, under normal circumstances, there would’ve been a guest list of at least three thousand people. Kay planned intensively, and ensured that she left “no stone unturned.” She beamed with excitement and happiness. Everywhere she went, she was sure to inform the world that she was turning sixty years of age. She was literally the most excited birthday girl this year. From large accents such as backdrops, food and lighting, to the smallest accents such as cutlery and napkins, Kay ensured everything was complete to perfection. She was so jovial and entered the celebration with Randy dancing to Mt. Tabor’s Celebration Medley, making it personal “See What The Lord Has Done For Me” and embracing everyone not forgetting to seize every possible photo opportunity with loved ones. That was truly a celebration fit for an angel and a queen. The Sunset of a Valiant Warrior It is a true saying that everything of God, happens for a reason. After a short hiatus between Kay and her daughter Sharlene, a longing for one another would reunite them in January of this year (2021). Now a professional nurse by profession, Sharlene would spend many days massaging, and nurturing Kay. It was as if no time had elapsed between both mother and daughter, sharing memories, photos, loved ones and
personal information with one another. Sharlene vowed to be Kay’s personal nurse. On Thursday October 14th, 2021, Kay reported to work as normal. Around 11:00am, she complained of feeling nauseous and self administered medication. By Monday October 18th, 2021, the ill feelings worsened. Sharlene, her daughter, not knowing it would be their last day together spent the day with her praying, rubbing her down and nurturing her, until shortly after six o clock (6:00 pm) when taken by immediate family members to Doctor’s Hospital. It was thought that she was simply dehydrated, unbeknownst to us that at 12:23 am Tuesday morning, she would peacefully pass away, to be with her Savior and mother, Ronnie. Each day she proved her love for her Lord, her family and friends. As we say until we meet again to a dear wife, mother, sister, niece, cousin, friend and colleague, we will reminisce on her favorite hymn, forever keeping her in our hearts. May she rest in peace.
“I love You, Lord For Your mercy never fails me All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands From the moment that I wake up Until I lay my head Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God And all my life You have been faithful And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God I love Your voice You have led me through the fire In the darkest night You are close like no other I’ve known You as a Father I’ve known You as a Friend And I have lived in the goodness of God.” ~Cece Winans

Order of Service Presiding: Pastor Kenneth Romer Entrance of the Family Call To Worship | Pastor Kenneth Romer So when this corruptible has put on incorruption And this mortal has put on immortality Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written Death is swallowed up in victory Oh Death where is your sting” Oh Hades where is your victory? The sting of death is sin And the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory Through our Lord Jesus Christ” 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 Opening Hymn | There’s A Refuge Secure” There’s a refuge secure, that will ever endure, In the Savior, divine and complete. He will hold fast my hand, till I reach that fair land, Where ’ll lay down my load at His feet.
I was lost deep in sin, had no comfort within, Till I trusted this Savior divine. Now I lean on His breast, finding comfort and rest, And I truly can say He is mine.
(Chorus) Blessed refuge secure, will forever endure, Tho’ the tempest around me roll. Soon I’ll see His sweet face, and will sing of His grace, In that beautiful home of the soul.
Sinner, come home today, have your sins washed away, In the blood of the one crucified. Then your life will be sweet, and your joy so complete, In this refuge of love, you may hide.

A Tribute to
My Loving, Devoted Wife My Dearest Kay, You lit an eternal flame in my heart more than thirty-five years ago, which continues to burn brightly, even into eternity. I dedicate these words of the 18th century writer, William Penn to you, my love: “They that love beyond the world, cannot be separated by it. Death is but crossing the world, as friends to the seas. They still live on in one another.” My love, you gave me your all and made many sacrifices for me and the boys. You were an honest, loving, dedicated wife and mother. You put service above self and sought to uplift and encourage all you met.

MyNana Nana, you were my motivation and my hero. As your first grandchild, we had a special love for each other, so much that people called me mini you. I love you because no matter what you always encouraged and guided me every day of my life. I am sad today, but I will always remember the good times we shared especially when we laughed, until tears filled our eyes. I will miss the times when you me and Mya sang our hearts out to your favorite song “The Goodness of God”. I will miss our Saturday shopping days and the treat you gave us to make up after keeping us out all day.
Nana, thank you for all you did for me. No one can ever replace you. I will miss spending time with you. You always made sure I was cared for and did all the special things for me, like making my banana pancakes. I will miss making you laugh, and hearing you say “this lil girl is something else”. I will miss talking to you on the telephone, but I understand God needed you more 18

My Fairytale Godmother They say godmothers have no wands or wings, Instead they work with wisdom, love, and things. With wisdom, pre-eminence and grace you took on this role, You loved me right down to my soul. You offered your heart, and your world to me. One of the greatest supporters on my team. My fairytale godmother in real life, and not in a dream. You greeted me always with a hug and kiss, Each freely out of love which I will surely miss. So I chose a twinkling star in the sky at night , To say a prayer for you to it’s bright light. You’re in God’s Heavens now my angel. In my thoughts, you’ll always remain How lucky I was, How blessed I’ve been, You were more than my Godmother, You were also my friend. So sleep on my love and take your rest, thank you for always supporting me and helping to make my dreams come true. Love always. ~Your Neish

Here’s to a Lady, so worthy of praise! You were a Lady, who knew when to suit-up and make the motorcycle talk R/ASP Karen Nottage; but also knew when to dress up and give Our GOD Praise and Glory, for the many miracles you received! Karen “Mom” Nottage! Wow! Wow! Wow! You’re gone and it hurts, but GOD is my strength, comfort, and giver of life!!! Our LOVE was kindled in the year 2008 and blossomed even more, during the MISS GOSPEL BAHAMAS PAGEANT, when you became my sponsor & I carried the title of your then business “Miss Essence of Kay”! Oh! I remember that season especially how you ensured that that my custom- made African Print Dress flew in safely and on time, all the way from Ghana, West Africa for my runway night. You went above and beyond for me! You were not my biological mother, but you were ‘Mom’ and a great mother figure in my life. You taught me much and likewise shared much more with me.
spent the entire day with you as your daughter, nurse & caregiver. Despite how you were feeling we prayed, chuckled, hugged and loved on each other as we talked about so many (and all) things with God as always, the major subject. Finally, I write this, with many emotions. The memories we created will forever be etched in my heart. I will always remember our last day together. I am so happy we had the chance to expressed our love to each other. We’ve maximized every moment of the days and months and for this, I’m forever grateful to God and will love you always! Thank You, for loving and appreciating me, my Husband & Pastor, Kellen Russell and or daughter Kyla, (who loved you much). May your soul rest in heavenly peace. Your Adopted Daughter, Sharlene Russell!
We were inseparable and OUR LOVE for each other was priceless, powerful, and purposefilled, it blossomed authentically & bloomed so beautifully. As the years went by, life got busy, a lot had changed and time was lost, but God saw fit to allow our LOVE to bloom even further: We thanked our God and appreciated our love even more continuing where we left off. He restored the years equally, as we’ve always agreed! Your 60th birthday celebration was a major highlight. We toasted to our rekindled relationship hoping to have enjoyed many more years together but, our God had other plans. On your final day on earth, 18th October 2021, I was privileged to have Karen Althea Nottage ~ 1961 - 2021

An Eternal Memory Until We Meet Again Those special memories of you Will always bring a smile.
I sit here and ponder how very much I’d like to talk with you today, there are so many things that we didn’t get to say. I know how much you care for me, and how much I care for you, and each time I think of you, I know you’ll miss me too. An angel came and took you by the hand, and said your place was ready in heaven, far above… and you had to leave behind, all those you dearly loved. You had so much to live for, you had so much to do… It still seems impossible that God was taking you. And though your life on earth is past, in Heaven it starts anew. You’ll live for all eternity, just as God has promised you. And though you’ve walked through Heaven’s gate, we’re never far apart, for every time I think of you you’re right here, deep within my heart.

If only I could have you back for just a little while Then we could sit and talk again Just like we used to do You always meant so much to me And always will do too. The fact that you’re no longer here Will always cause me pain But you’re forever in my heart Until we meet again. Forever Love -Wendy

Tribute To
Our Big Sister You were the first of our father’s children one who grew up strong and seemingly fearless always ready and willing to face the challenges that lie ahead. As you expanded your wings in life you selflessly thought of us, reached out and sought us out one by one. You made time for us, checking in on us at every turn we made in life. You encouraged us to strive for more not to become a negative statistic; the police officer, enforcer, always on duty. No matter how much time passed between us It seemed like you were never too far away; whether popping up for a surprise visit on your motorcycle or just a simple phone call. You were always there. You were like our personal superhero only lacking the cape. Your love for us was sincere. As you expanded your family becoming a wife and a mother you continued to lead by example showing us how to do things right. You loved your family, you were always willing to go to bat for them in any and every circumstance. You though stern, still knew how to exude elegance in mind, spirit and dress. You began to earn your wings here on earth by giving your life to the Lord, Jesus Christ and living for Him until the day He called you home. You are now His enforcer standing at the ready, resting awaiting for His next orders so that you can execute them diligently. You will always be our superhero one who does not need a cape because you now have wings. Your love can still be felt from the other side, though physically not here you will never be forgotten because you are never too far away. We love you K, our big Sis. -Talbot, Lisa, Monique, J.J., Calsey and Derwin

My Cousin
To God Be The Glory, Great Things He Has Done Allison Chambers Coxey once wrote, “There’s something God has given us, that’s more than family; he’s placed a love for you, my sister, deep down in the heart of me.” Kay you were more than my cousin and a dear friend, we were sisters! You’ve loved me unconditionally, and stood with me through thick and thin. You’ve shared my joys and sorrows, always being supportive and encouraging at all my pivotal life experiences. From being my matron of honor, to both of us being godparents to one another’s children; I only find comfort in knowing that you are safe in the arms of our heavenly father. I was truly blessed to have you in my life. I will miss our talks, and your comforting voice, I will miss our special times together, our 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning workout 24

sessions. And those random moments, where we’d mutually rejoice. God looked around his garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the Earth and saw your face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. For I am now certain that he only takes the best. Sleep on my sister, my friend and my confidant. My Friend
I first met Kaye on the balcony of our church (Mount Tabor) at one of our night services, she sat in the first seat and I in the third seat. Bishop Ellis made a call for folks to come and join the Sanctuary Choir, I thought of the long walk downstairs to the altar and was a bit hesitant, and suddenly this woman grabbed my hand and said come we going, they need people. We made our way to the altar and when we got there, Bishop looked at us with that stare that said something funny was coming, he said “you see them there, ain’t none a dem cud sing” he was right. Karen and I had the same thought of just wanting to be a part of something. This was just the beginning of a friendship that would blossom throughout the years. I spoke to her on the Thursday before her passing and could not reach her since. A trusted friend you were, a prayer and fasting partner, a confidante, an any time of day or night friend. in good times and in bad we were always there for each other. Despite the many challenges we faced, we always found solace in
prayer, and you would always say “Shay God is in Control”. You’ve done all you could on this side and have bore the pain and the burden of many others, sometimes leaving yourself un-done. Your work here on earth has ended, and now your reward awaits you. I love you Kaye and I will miss you dearly. So, until then my friend, Rest in Eternity. Love, SHARON
