Louise Elizabeth Simmons
God, Faith, Family, Service, Commitment, Training, Discipline, Decency, Respect and Caring. These words best describe the life of Louise Elizabeth Simmons.
Caleb and Amie (nee Smith) were blessed with the birth of their second child (first daughter) of seven children (two males and five females) on 12th October 1921 on Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos Islands. They named her Louise Elizabeth (Weese, as she was affectionally called). She completed her education at the Salt Cay All-Age School under the tutelage of Ms. Mary Robinson. When she was old enough to go out of the home to work, Louise was employed as a housekeeper for the Harriot Family. Her father was very industrious and often fished among the keys. One day during a fishing trip, he along with a fellow skipper encountered very challenging weather, and they never returned home. As a result, Louise’s home training by her mother instantaneously made her conurturer of her siblings. She noted, “I was Jack of all trades and did men’s work which included masonry, carpentry, painting, sewing bags for the salt industry for shipping, and making ropes for the sail boats as a means of supporting my family.” She also was a member of the team who crocheted socks for the British war veterans during World War II.
As time went on, now a grown lady, Louise continued to assist with the rearing of her nieces and nephews. When her sister Ruth and husband who were educators migrated to The Bahamas to embrace a teaching position at the Victoria Point All-Aged School in Mangrove Cay, she was asked to join them. On 23rd March, 1959 she migrated to The Bahamas with their four children; Annette, John, and R. Aston and M. Leo. She embraced the many friendships extended to her from communities in South Andros, Long Island, Andros, Grand Bahama, and New Providence.
During numerous family gatherings, she often spoke about her travels to Jamaica, New York, Las Vegas, Texas, Philadelphia,
Georgia, Florida, Virginia, and the United Kingdom, to support and visit with family members on vacation trips.
When her sister’s children were grown enough, she sought employment at the former Rassin Hospital, now Doctors Hospital, working in the kitchen with long-time friend, parishioner, and neighbor, Mrs. Mary Foster; She then taught at St. Agnes day school for almost two decades under the leadership of Ms. Evelyn Claridge, Fr. Milton Cooper, and Ms. Vera Love before her retirement.
Prior to the death of her mother in 1976, Louise promised her that she that she would look after and protect her youngest sister, Mary. So, she relocated to Nassau Street from Boyd Subdivision to live with her sister and her four children. She kept this promise until her demise in March, 2024.
Louise’s Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was always first in her life. As a part of her dedication to her faith that Louise routinely implemented for years, she ensured that she conducted personal and family devotions, and Bible study. Louise faithfully and courageously made her way to Holy Spirit Anglican Church to worship at the 7:00 am mass and 6:30 pm evensong each week via foot from Nassau Street to Howard Street, Chippingham. She dedicated her life to service of others and her church. She was a member of her church’s singing choir, altar guild, Sunday school and the Anglican Church Women (ACW) ministries. Louise never allowed you to leave her presence until you were filled with spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial nourishment, and trunks of wisdom and advice, and never sought anything in return.
During her months-long celebration leading up to her 100th birthday, she was visited by the Most Honourable Sir Cornelius A. Smith, Governor General of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and received a written

letter of congratulation and best wishes from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. During a visit from the Hon. Alfred Sears, M.P., Ft. Charlotte Constituency, she was asked “what is one wish that you have?” to which she responded “to return to the place of my birth.”
Immediate, preparations began and Louise was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and celebration she received from her family and home-town natives when her feet touched Salt Cay again. She received a special award from His Excellency Nigel Dakin, Governor, Turks and Caicos Islands. She was paraded through the streets and welcomed at The House of Assembly in Grand Turk, to be honoured as Lady Louise Elizabeth Simmons.
However, the highlight of this trip was her visit to St. John’s Anglican Church in Salt Cay where she was christened and worshiped. She wept as she entered its quaint sanctuary and sat in the same seat as she did many years ago. The grand celebrations and tributes continued with family and friends traveling from near and far during her 101st and 102nd birthdays.
Although she never married or bore any biological children of her own, she lived her life being passionate about instilling training, discipline, decency, respect and caring into us; her nephews and nieces. When did she do it? When she was bathing us, combing our hair, dressing us, sewing our clothes, teaching us to read, cooking for and feeding us from babies to adults, and disciplining us with one lick across our necks with a wet dish cloth (the dish cloth Ninga as described by Louie, greatgrandnephew). And because she treated us not as an aunt would, but rather as a mother the entire family acknowledge her as the greatest matriarch to have ever lived.
During the days when she was unable to attend church services at Holy Spirit Church, she worshiped with her niece at The Most Holy Trinity Anglican Church so that she can see Fr. Deangelo, Mrs. Tennessee and ‘her boy,’ Kimaini Bowe. It was because of the life she lived, she was remembered and often visited by Fr. John Micklewhyte, former priest, Holy Spirit Anglican Church who prayed with her, had private church services with her, and ensured that she received The Holy Communion. She was also visited
by Fr. Lynden Douglas, Rector, St. Ambrose Anglican Church on Ash Wednesday. Louise also participated in the Anglican Diocese of The Turks & Caicos Islands Lenten Mission Services held 18th -20th February, 2024.
For many years, she spoke about preparation for her inevitable departure from this earth. But, in November, 2023, she made this communication intentional and personal. She shared with Lanario, grandnephew, that she will not be here when he returned from his practical maritime studies abroad. Up to two weeks prior to her demise, she had total control of her human faculties, and enjoyed physical health to a fair degree. She embraced surprised visits from nieces and nephews, family members, and friends from Abaco, Grand Bahama, New Providence, Florida, North Carolina, Turks & Caicos Islands, and the United Kingdom.
On 3rd January, 2024 during one of those cherished visits by Keith, Leah, Dixie, Yvette, Annette, Louis, Erica, LeRon, Lisa and Mary (sister), she said thank you to the family, and uttered the following prayer over the family:
“I have seen most of them (the family). Those who are not here, I suppose were not able to come like Stanley, Jonas, Franklyn, Freeport and Provo. I pray that you all are well. I am thankful to see my family. I had a good Christmas although I didn’t feel good, but I enjoyed it. My family came to see me, and that was the most beautiful thing. I pray Oh God that they would look after their families, have a good New Year; they all would grow up together, looking after their children, looking after one another, and pray that God will bless them, guide them and protect them. Although I don’t expect this next year, I trust that God will bring me as far as He could carry me. Thank you Oh, Lord this morning for this prayer for all my family. I pray
that He will guide you all and protect you, and keep us together. This I ask in Your precious name, Amen.”
The family of Louise Simmons is completely satisfied that she received her flowers while she was competent in mind to appreciate them. For her remaining two years on this earth, all of her nieces and nephews including the grands, great-grands, and great great-grands were showering her with appreciation for what she did for them; and her mental faculties were sufficiently sharp to receive the praises given to her. She will forever be remembered.
Louise is predeceased by her parents, Caleb and Amie Simmons and siblings; Alfred Simmons, Edward Simmons, Ruth Jones, Ida Williams, and Winnifred Bassett.

Celebrant: With faith in Jesus Christ, we reverently receive the body of our dear sister Louise, for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God, our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister Louise. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

V: I bless + the body of Louise with the Holy Water that recalls her baptism into Christ of which St. Paul writes: “All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death.” By baptism into His death we were buried together with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might have a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.
On the day of her baptism, Louise put on Christ. In the day of Christ’s coming, may she be clothed with glory.
Lord hear our prayers and be merciful to Your servant Louise whom you have called from this life. Welcome her into the company of your saints, in the kingdom of light and peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Almighty God, we thank You that in Your great love You have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of Your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of Your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be unto us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow, nor crying, but the fullness of life with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

THANK YOU MESSAGE FROM LOUISE ELIZABETH SIMMONS, ON THE OCCASION OF HER 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
I want to take this time to say thank you to all of you for doing what you have done for me over the years especially on my 100th birthday. I was overwhelmed by receiving so much attention. I was not looking to celebrate, and travelling was out of the question! I told many of you not to make a fuss about my birthday and that my traveling days were over. However, after my passport was renewed, I was asked to make a birthday wish. Even though I said that I would like to visit Turks Island again, I was not really planning to do so. I never thought that I would have set foot on Salt Cay again!
I was still reluctant to make any preparations and I specifically told you all not to make a fuss because I was still feeling very sad about my niece and nephews who died. When I looked around and listened again, I was trying on dresses, putting on gloves, receiving gifts and flowers, and being visited by many family members who travelled from near and far just to celebrate with me. Every day was a special event; whether it was a telephone call or someone who passed by just to say hello.
I really appreciated the visit by Minister Sears, the Member of Parliament for the Ft. Charlotte Constituency, the Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and his presentation of a birthday message to me from the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II.
I especially loved the concert as I watched all of you celebrate me and have a good time.
Then it was off to Turks Island. I had such a wonderful time there. Everything was so exciting and good and I felt like a queen how everyone treated me; from having tea with the Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands in Providenciales, to lunch with the Parliamentarians at the House of
Assembly in Grand Turk who gave me the title “Lady” Louise, Church service at St. John’s Church in Salt Cay; just one big celebration after another. Every minute someone wanted to take a picture. I said that I did not want the fuss, but I am happy about it all.
My favorite part of the trip was visiting Salt Cay. I saw places that I use to go to when I lived there such as the Benevolent Hall, Sunday School, Mary Robinson’s School, the “Fally” (the causeway between the saltpans) and more! I do not have all of the words to say how all of you made me feel but THANK YOU!
Many people asked me what is the secret for such a long life? I often say, “hard work.” I worked very hard during my life – since the age of twelve, building walls, painting – everything a man did. I did not marry or have children of my own, and I sacrificed to help my mother, brothers and sisters with their children. I stood behind the pole and put them in front. When I look at all of you, the hard work and sacrifice was worth it all.
It was not only hard work though; it was all about serving God and obeying my parents. He kept me all these years –when times were good and when they were not so good. I can still see, hear, speak, move about and my brain is working well. Only God knows how much longer I will be here, but I am satisfied with what I have and how I lived. When He calls me I will have to go. But until then, I will be right here.
Once again, thank you to all of you from Nassau, Freeport, Salt Cay, Provo, Grand Turk, England and the United States. I appreciate you and I love all of you. God Bless You.
