Obituary

Celebration of Life and Legacy’ of Matriarch Marjorie Symonette Russell O.B.E.

A TIME TO BE BORN

Marjorie Symonette Russell, born on August 18th, 1928, in the tranquil settlement of Nicholl’s Town on the beautiful island of Andros, peacefully passed away at her residence in Nicholl’s Town, on April 18th , 2024. She was the beloved daughter and baby of her predeceased parents Margaret Stirrup Oliver of Nicholl’s Town, North Andros and Charles Stephen Symonette of Rock Sound Eleuthera. She was fondly known as “Goddie Marjie” to many within the community.

A TIME FOR EDUCATION

Marjorie’s educational journey began at the Nicholl’s Town All Age School, and Eastern Senior High School (Nassau) where her brilliance shone through, leading her to become a school monitor.

A TIME TO WORK

Marjorie was introduced to her life’s passion by Maybell Rahming who taught her sewing after school. She had few choices but to go with her sister Maude to do work, this involved sewing, hemming, and stitching buttonholes. A seamstress by profession, she greatly contributed to the fashion industry in North Andros with her creative design and unique style, at her clothing store where she also made school uniforms and Marjorie designer dresses.

Her elegant creations graced the streets of Nicholl’s

Town, especially on Sundays as she made her way to Church and Sunday School, leaving a lasting impression on all who saw her.

A TIME FOR LOVE AND FAMILY

In her personal life, Marjorie was united in marriage to the late Clarence “Mossa” Russell on April 17th, 1946 (deceased). She was the proud mother of five children: Peggy, Jen, Stephen, Ricardo and Wayde. She was a devoted mother, and doting grandmother who found joy in preparing delicious meals for her loved ones with family favourites like ‘Fish Soup, Chicken N Dumpling Soup, Fried Fish with Grits N Peas’, creating a warm and welcoming home for her family to gather and share in her love.

A TIME FOR FAITH, HONOR AND COMMUNITY

Marjorie, a woman of small stature, but with a big and pure heart dedicated her life to serving her community and making a difference in the lives of those

around her. Exemplifying dedication and commitment to her faith she served as a senior circuit steward for 30 years and over 40 years as a Sunday School teacher at Wesley Mount Zion Methodist Church instilling values, and teaching in generations of young minds.

Her contributions were recognized when she received the prestigious award of Queen’s Honor ‘Order of The British Empire’(O.B.E.) 1994 a testament to her outstanding service and leadership. She was an active member of the O.E.S Guiding Star No.10 and other civic organizations, always lending a helping hand where needed. Her work at the Bahamas Red Cross, particularly her leadership in teaching students at the Nicholl’s Town All Age how to sew, knit, and crochet clothing and accessories for Bahamian troop overseas, showcased her compassion and dedication to serving others. Her nurturing and motherly love extended beyond her own family, earning the title ‘Mother of the Year’ 05/2000 from Shirley Caesar for her kind and selfless acts of raising a village in her community

A TIME FOR TRANSITIONING

Despite facing challenges such a mobility loss in her later years, she maintained her spirit and continued to find joy in pleasures like conversations with loved ones, singing hymns, and reciting poems. Even as her health declined, she found ways to stay connected to faith, her family through her son Ricky who would call everyone to speak with or FaceTime

mummy or grammy and take her for a stroll around the community.

Marjorie’s health declined further in the later part of 2023, leading to being bedridden and further mobility loss. Marjorie was able to spend a few weeks with her loved ones assisting to care for her. At 95 in her state, although she spoke few words she built the strength to create sufficient energy to be witty, a great listener, give a nod, recall a bible verses and recite poems.

Her readiness to meet her maker, and her sense of peace in God reflect a deep faith and willingness to move on to the next chapter of her journey. It’s clear that Marjorie’s love for her family was a guiding force in her life, and her desire for them to be united and okay is a testament of selflessness and caring nature. Her love for reading Royal Readers and the Bible until the very end shows her commitment to learning, growth and spiritual nourishment.

Marjorie Russell “Goddy Marjie” as she was affectionately and respectfully called in her community will be remembered for her talent as a seamstress, her unwavering dedication to her family, Church and Community, and her kind and nurturing spirit. Her legacy of creativity, Love, Grace, and Elegance will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.

May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love and memories she created during her lifetime.

THE ENTRANCE:

Dying, Christ destroyed our death. Rising, Christ restored our life. Christ will come again in glory. As in baptism Marjorie put on Christ. So in Christ may Marjorie be clothed with glory.

THE WORD OF GRACE: The Sentences

THE INTROIT | “Till We Meet Again”

HYMN | “All Hail the Power”

All hail the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall. Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all. Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all!

O seed of Israel’s chosen race now ransomed from the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all. Hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all!

PRAYER

Let every tongue and every tribe responsive to his call, to him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all. To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all!

Oh, that with all the sacred throng we at his feet may fall!

We’ll join the everlasting song and crown him Lord of all.

We’ll join the everlasting song and crown him Lord of all.

O God who gave us birth, you are ever more ready to hear than we are to pray. You know our needs before we ask, and our ignorance in asking. Give to us now your grace, that as we shrink before the mystery of death, we may see the light of eternity. Help us to live as those who are prepared to die. And when our days here are accomplished, enable us to die as those who go forth to live, so that living or dying, our life may be in you.

HYMN | “I’m Glad I Counted the Cost”

When first I started to seek the Lord, I’m glad I counted the cost; I fully measured to Jesus’ word, I’m glad I counted the cost.Chorus:

I’ve paid the price and obtained the prize, He saved my soul that was lost; And now my treasures are in the skies, I’m glad I counted the cost.

I laid my sorrows at Jesus’ feet, I’m glad I counted the cost; And now I’ve pleasures so pure and sweet, I’m glad I counted the cost.

[Chorus]

I’ve bid farewell to this world of sin, I’m glad I counted the cost; And now my Jesus abides within, I’m glad I counted the cost.

[Chorus]

Although the trials seem hard to bear, I’m glad I counted the cost; I now my burdens with Jesus share, I’m glad I counted the cost.

[Chorus]

’Twill not be long till the Lord shall come, I’m glad I counted the cost; And bear my soul to that heav’nly home, I’m glad I counted the cost.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again, He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy, catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (SUNG)

BENEDICTION

RECESSIONAL HYMN | “And Can It Be”

And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Savior’s blood! Died he for me? who caused his pain! For me? who him to death pursued?

[Chorus]:

Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

‘Tis mystery all: th’ Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine.

‘Tis mercy all! Let earth adore; let angel minds inquire no more.

‘Tis mercy all! Let earth adore; let angel minds inquire no more.

He left his Father’s throne above (so free, so infinite his grace!), emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam’s helpless race.

‘Tis mercy all, immense and free, for O my God, it found out me!

‘Tis mercy all, immense and free, for O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in sin and nature’s night; thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine; alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach th’ eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own. Bold I approach th’ eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own.

GRAVESIDE HYMNS:

MY SAVIOUR FIRST OF ALL

1 When my lifework is ended and I cross the swelling tide, When the bright and glorious morning I shall see; I shall know my Redeemer when I reach the other side, And His smile will be the first to welcome me.

Chorus:

I shall know Him, (I shall know Him,) I shall know Him, And redeemed by His side I shall stand; I shall know Him, (I shall know Him,) I shall know Him By the print of the nails in His hand.

2 Oh, the soul thrilling rapture when I view His blessed face, And the luster of His kindly beaming eye; How my full heart will praise Him for the mercy, love and grace That prepared for me a mansion in the sky. [Chorus]

3 Oh, the dear ones in glory, how they beckon me to come, And our parting at the river I recall; To the sweet vales of Eden they will sing my welcome home, But I long to meet my Savior first of all. [Chorus]

4 Thro’ the gates to the city in a robe of spotless white, He will lead me where no tears will ever fall; In the glad song of ages I shall mingle with delight, But I long to meet my Savior first of all. [Chorus]

THE DAY THOU GAVEST

1. The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended; the darkness falls at thy behest; to thee our morning hymns ascended; thy praise shall hallow now our rest.

2. We thank thee that thy church, unsleeping while earth rolls onward into light, through all the world her watch is keeping, and rests not now by day or night.

FACE TO FACE

1 Face to face with Christ, my Savior, Face to face- what will it be When with rapture I behold him, Jesus Christ who died for me?

Refrain:

Face to face I shall behold him, Far beyond the starry sky; Face to face in all his glory, I shall see him by and by.

2 Only faintly now I see him With the darkened veil between, But a blessed day is coming When his glory shall be seen. [Refrain]

3 What rejoicing in his presence, When are banished grief and pain; When the crooked ways are straightened And the dark things shall be plain. [Refrain]

4 Face to face- oh, blissful moment! Face to face- to see and know; Face to face with my Redeemer, Jesus Christ who loves me so. [Refrain]

3. As o’er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, nor die the strains of praise away.

4. So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never, like earth’s proud empires, pass away. Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever, till all thy creatures own thy sway.

Service of Committal

In the midst of life, we are in death; from whom can we seek help? Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. God who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through the Spirit that dwells in you. (Romans 8:11)

Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. Then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

(1 Corinthians 15:51, 53, 54 B-55, 57)

Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also dwells secure. You, [Lord,] show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, in your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:9, 11)

The following prayer is offered:

Let us pray.

O God, you have ordered this wonderful world and know all things in earth and in heaven. Give us such faith that by day and by night, at all times and in all places, we may without fear commit ourselves and those dear to us to your never-failing love, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

One of the following or other scriptures may be read:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for you. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you suffer trials so that the genuineness of your faith may prove itself worthy at the revelation of Jesus Christ.Without having seen him, yet you love him; though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the harvest of your faith you reap the salvation of your souls.

(Adapted From 1 Peter 1:3-9)

Jesus said: “Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.”

(John 12:24-26)

Standing at the head of the coffin and facing it (preferably casting earth upon it as it is lowered into the grave) the pastor says:

Almighty God, into your hands we commend your daughter Marjorie, in sure and certain hope of resurrection to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. This body we commit to the ground (to the elements, to its resting place), earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Yes, says the Spirit, they will rest from their labors for their deeds follow them. (Revelation 14:13, Alt.)

One or more of the following or other prayers is offered:

Gracious God, we thank you for those we love but see no more.Receive into your arms your servant Name, and grant that increasing in knowledge and love of you, he/she may go from strength to strength in service to your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, look with pity upon the sorrow of your servants, for whom we pray. Amidst things they cannot understand, help them to trust in your care. Bless them and keep them. Make your face to shine upon them, and give them peace. Amen.

O Lord, support us all the day long of our troubled life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then in your mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, you have shared with us the life of Marjorie. Before she was ours, she is yours. For all that Marjorie has given us to make us what we are, for that of her which lives and grows in each of us, and for her life that in your love will never end, we give you thanks. As now we offer Marjorie back into your arms, comfort us in our loneliness, strengthen us in our weakness, and give us courage to face the future unafraid. Draw those of us who remain in this life closer to one another, make us faithful to serve one another, and give us to know that peace and joy which is eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

To Mommy,

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.

His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain. And knew that you would never get well on earth again.

He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes, He whispered to you “Peace be Thine” and gave you wings to fly.

When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain, We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again. You’ve left us precious memories, your love will be our guide, You live on through your children, you’re always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Rest In Heavenly Peace, Your beloved son Jen

Brittany Russell

The softest heart that gave the strongest love…It would be impossible to put in to words the role you’ve played in our lives Grammy. You wore many hats, a confidant, a protector, a friend...you were the embodiment of a mother to us all. I remember as a child being in the airport anticipating your wheelchair (that we had to fight you to use for its lack of a fashion statement) breaking the corner. I gave little thought then for what it took for you to leave your home and travel to the U.S., but you showed up. Each and every Christmas, and in between, you showed up. Your love was and is so consistent, so pure. You truly were our MATRIARCH. I pray that we can make you proud, that we can remember to show up, and that we can embody your softness and grace, especially amongst the ones that we love. Thank you Grammy for each and every lesson and the abundance of love. I love you, eternally. We’ll be seeing you sweet lady.

To Mom

Mom, I will miss your beautiful smile every Sunday morning. It’s hard to say goodbye, but you are no longer suffering. Your name was called, you were an angel here on earth now you have your angel wings and crown.

Rest in Peace Mom.

I Love you, your daughter Peggy

To Mommy

You have fought the good fight and now you have earned your wings. You will be missed and I will forever hold those precious memories of you in my heart forever. My rock is gone but you will never be forgotten.

Rest In Peace Mommy, Love Ricky

To Grammy…

Your gentle spirit and unwavering love were a constant source of comfort. We will forever cherish memories of your shared stories, your laughter and contagious smile that always brightened even the worst days.

95 years of beauty and grace you were talented, delicate, poised, elegant, soft spoken and selfless thinking of the wellbeing of your loved ones even during suffering.

Grammy the love you gave extends across oceans and something you experience very few times in life. Making you proud has been our constant motivation throughout this life whether during Undergrad, Postgrad or our career journey’s.

As you told us leading into your final weeks “Grammy can’t be here forever and we can’t always be together”. You will forever be embedded in our hearts, we hope to become half the lady you were always achieving and pursuing only the very best out of life.

Until We Meet Again Grammy, Love, Synamon (Lil’ Marjie) and Holly

OUR TRIBUTE TO GRAMMY

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

We had a wonderful grandmother, One who never really grew old. Her smile was made of sunshine, And her heart, of solid gold. Her eyes were as bright as shining stars, And in her cheeks fair roses you’ll see. We had a wonderful grandmother, And that’s the way it will always be.

Though her smile is gone forever and her soft hands we cannot touch. We still have so many memories. Of the one that we loved so much.

God looked around his garden. and found an empty space. Then he looked down upon this earth And he saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And he lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful. He only takes the best.

Rest in Perfect Peace Grammy, With love, forever and always.

Your Grandsons.

BLOSSOM, WITHER, DIE

Mummy, thank you for your nuturing, love, and support. You have molded me, thaught me how to pray, kept me in Sunday school, church programs, tested me on homework spelling, and created me the most unique design school uniforms designs. When faced with adversities, I always remember what you have thaught me and the foundation from which i take. To trust in the Lord with all my heart.

As your beauty withered, i often had to reassure you, that your purpose was not yet done, that your heavenly home was not yet ready. Many feel like the best gift a parent can give a child is perhaps a good education. But you have thaught me that the best gift ever. Is the gift of eternal life. As all earthly possesions will pass away. You have cradled me, then i cradled you. The true beauty and essence of life.

Until we meet again, I am happy knowing you made it to your eternal home.
