THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL SERVICES, INFORMATION & BROADCASTING
O
n the occasion of The Bahamas Red Cross 50th Annual Ball, I am honored to offer greetings in celebration of your achievement of this momentous milestone. Although, the country was spared from natural and other disasters since your last ball, your organization continued its invaluable services in the community. We commend you on your continued efforts to build capacity and skills of our citizens in the areas of: Disaster Management, First Aid and CPR, Lifeguard Program and Psychosocial support. Your focus on Backyard Farming during 2023 will go a long way in building food security for our families and communities. Notably, The Bahamas Red Cross’ Climate Resilience Program’s mission aligns with the country’s Climate Change Policy and we look forward to your continued support. You ought to be commended for targeting the nation’s youth for participation in this very valuable initiative. This cadre of youth volunteers demonstrate your organization’s futuristic vision and excellent succession planning for this very important service to the community. Your 50th Red Cross Ball Anniversary’s theme “Shades of Red, A Golden Celebration” is a defining one, as 50 symbolizes positive changes and new beginnings. There is also a spiritual meaning to the combination of red and gold. The color gold meaning “divine illumination, abundance, and spiritual enlightenment” and red means “strong emotions, passion and vitality.” Therefore, as you forge toward executing your programs and initiatives this year, may your “Shades of Red…” be associated with passion and empathy for those you will be called on to serve in the Bahamian community. May your fundraising initiatives exceed your expectations enabling you to meet the needs of the large cross-section of persons who will be seeking your services. In your “Golden Celebration” this evening, may all in attendance stand in salute to all the workers and volunteers of this organization for another outstanding year of service to the Bahamian people! Let this 50th year be linked to enhanced confidence in this civic organization and may this evening’s celebration capture the attention of the entire Bahamian community. As the Minister responsible for the country’s social safety net and on behalf of the citizens and the Government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas I wish to express congratulations to The Bahamas Red Cross staff and your cadre of volunteers for your selfless and relentless service throughout our Bahamian society! THE PRESIDENT OF THE BAHAMAS RED CROSS SOCIETY
D
istinguished Guests, Esteemed Colleagues, Ladies, and Gentlemen,
It is with profound humility and immeasurable honor that, as the President of The Bahamas Red Cross Society, I address you on this auspicious occasion marking the 50th anniversary of our esteemed Annual Red Cross Ball. We are gathered here not just to celebrate a significant milestone but to honor a legacy. A legacy diligently crafted over half a century, symbolizing the very essence of the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross - Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality. The Bahamas Red Cross Society, since its inception in 1939, has been a stalwart bastion of hope, a beacon of humanity in times of tumult and tranquility alike. Our mission, unchanging and steadfast, has been to alleviate human suffering, uphold life and dignity, and promote health in both times of peace and conflict. Our mission, deeply rooted in these principles, is clear:, To prevent and alleviate suffering wherever it may be found, To protect life and health and ensure respect for the human being, To work for the prevention of disease and the promotion of health and social welfare, To train personnel and encourage voluntary service, To act as a channel for collecting money and goods donated by the general public for the sick and suffering. In recent years, our mission has been tested by unprecedented challenges, notably the catastrophic Hurricane Dorian and the ongoing global pandemic. These adversities have strained our resources, tested our resilience, but most importantly, they have underscored the indomitable spirit of the Bahamas Red Cross Society and amplified our unyielding spirit and reaffirmed our commitment to our mission. As we navigate these tumultuous waters, our gratitude extends to our generous patrons, donors, sponsors, and supporters. Your unwavering commitment bolsters our resources, fuels our mission, and invigorates our vision. Tonight, we reserve our deepest appreciation for the true

vanguards and heroes of our cause - our extraordinary network of volunteers and our dedicated staff, lead by our Director General, Ms. Alicia Pinder. Your relentless dedication, selfless sacrifices, and unwavering resolve are the heart and soul of our society. As we look to the future, our vision is both clear and ambitious. We aim to enhance our relationships, strengthen our operations, and extend our reach to the family island centres. We stand committed to fulfilling the agenda of the 2030 National Strategic Plan, ensuring that we continue to support the most vulnerable in our society through initiatives like Meals on Wheels, daily feeding, social welfare programs, first aid, CPR training, and rapid response to national disasters. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and it is fitting to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all past presidents, particularly my immediate predecessor, Terez Curry. In this regard extend my deepest respect and gratitude to all past presidents for their exemplary leadership which has been instrumental in guiding our society towards the path of service and compassion. Lastly, my sincerest gratitude goes to the Ball Committee, expertly led by the visionary Kim Thurston, our 1st Vice President, and her team of innovative strategists. Your commendable efforts, dedication and commitment to organizing and orchestrating this splendid event epitomize the spirit of The Bahamas Red Cross Society. In closing, The Bahamas Red Cross Society is more than an organization; it is an emblem of hope, a testament to human resilience and a symbol of compassion. As we continue to confront challenges and adversities we shall not waver nor falter but we shall persevere for we are the Bahamas Red Cross Society. Thank you and here’s to the promising journey of the next 50 years. Sincerely, Edison L. Sumner President

T
he good book admonishes that we, “in all things, give thanks.” As simple as that principle seems, we acknowledge that we find it improbable or even impossible to apply thankfulness to so much that we encounter and experience. Thankfully, tonight, on the golden jubilee of its Annual Ball, The Bahamas Red Cross golden commemorates countless reasons, persons, actions, occasions, and accomplishments for which we are all beaming with appreciation.
a monumental Past President of The Bahamas Red Cross. The Red Cross soared, under his years of devoted leadership, and continues to elevate. Our Corporate Honoree, tonight, is Commonwealth Brewery. We treasure their years of consistent top-tier support that has been pivotal to our success. BTC is the Ball’s Title Sponsor, and we cannot say enough about their meaningful contributions to tonight. With so much to be grateful for, we must also highlight the love and work of the Ball Committee members, who collaborated energetically to produce this event. They are truly a fine group of individuals, many of them new to this, but all of them productive and impactful.
The numerous roles of the Bahamas Red Cross in making a positive difference are reflected in this year’s theme: “Fifty Shades of Red.” Shades not only represent color, style, or approach; shades render shelter, safety, and protection; and, shades signal the Red Cross’s universality and it range of options, services, and excellent outcomes. It is always worth repeating and being grateful for key services that The Bahamas Red Cross executes via people and processes that are voluntary. For example, our Disaster and Emergency Relief and our First Aid programs complement our support for food provision and security, nutrition, and personal crop cultivating featured in the Backyard Farming, Mealson-Wheels, and School Milk Scheme programs. Our Family Island Services, our Junior Red Cross/Red Cross Youth, and our Climate Change Initiative programs help demonstrate thoughtful dedication to The Bahamas and its future.
As we celebrate and have fun tonight, let us individually take time to appreciate each other. Meet and greet at least one new acquaintance. Share a smile or hearty laughter. And, importantly, rededicate your time, talents, and resourcefulness to sustaining the work and mission of the Red Cross. With your support, we are confident that The Bahamas Red Cross will remain a significant contributor to the well-being of people, nationally and internationally. We thank you for your encouragement and support, and we are confident that, fifty years from now, there will be immeasurable reasons to give thanks at the Obsidian Celebration of The Red Cross Ball.
Beyond this fifty-year milestone of the Ball, The Bahamas Red Cross will relentlessly continue, with unity and impartiality, to prevent and relieve human suffering, protect life and health, and enhance interpersonal respect, collaboration, understanding, and lasting peace. We are thankful for the opportunity to appreciate, at this Golden Ball, our Individual Honoree, Craig Tony Gomez. Craig is

OBEDIAH H. WILCHCOMBE
O
n behalf of The Bahamas Red Cross Society, we extend our deepest gratitude and honor to the late Honourable Obediah Wilchcombe, whose lifetime of public service has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our nation. As Minister for Social Services, Mr. Wilchcombe was more than a stakeholder; he was a cornerstone in the foundation of our society’s efforts to champion the cause of the disenfranchised and the downtrodden in our communities. His unwavering commitment to the upliftment of those in need resonated powerfully through the halls of the Ministry and into the heart of every initiative he supported. His advocacy went beyond mere words; it was a call to action that he answered daily with a fervent dedication to creating meaningful change. His tenacity was matched only by his compassion, as he sought to not only address the immediate needs of the poor and vulnerable but also to empower them to rise above their circumstances. Minister Wilchcombe was a true ally to The Bahamas Red Cross Society, reinforcing our shared mission with vigor and rallying support for our cause. Our recent collaboration was a testament to his genuine interest in strengthening the bonds between the Ministry of Social Services and our organization, setting the stage for a future of mutual support and growth. Minister Wilchcombe had a unique ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life, understanding their struggles and championing their cause with genuine empathy and an unrelenting determination to effect change. His belief in the untapped potential of the Bahamian people was a source of inspiration, driving us to push the boundaries of what we can achieve in service to our community. He saw the inherent dignity in every individual and worked tirelessly to ensure that dignity was recognized and honored. Minister Wilchcombe was more than a leader; he was a beacon of hope, a voice for the voiceless, and a tireless advocate for social justice. We at The Bahamas Red Cross Society extend our heartfelt gratitude for Minister Wilchcombe’s unwavering support and partnership. We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and colleagues and together, we celebrate his life, his contributions, and the profound difference he made in the lives of so many. We stand with you in honoring a life so richly lived and a spirit so generously shared. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may the values he championed continue to inspire us all to work towards a kinder, more compassionate Bahamas.

n the quiet moments of selfless giving and the gentle touch of compassion, Mrs. Clara Ruthmae Bell lived a life that was a testament to the power of kindness. Today, we at the Bahamas Red Cross Society stand in heartfelt gratitude as we pay tribute to a soul whose light shone brightly in the service of others. Mrs. Bell’s unwavering dedication to our cause was a beacon of hope for many. Her hands, always ready to serve, brought sustenance and comfort through the Meals On Wheels program. Her spirit of volunteerism was not just an act of charity, but a profound demonstration of love in action. She poured her heart into every meal prepared, every package delivered, ensuring that the most vulnerable among us felt the warmth of a community that cares. With the grace of a guardian angel, Mrs. Bell lent her wisdom and resources to the 2023 Red Cross Ball Committee. Her tireless efforts were instrumental in the magical orchestration of the first post-Covid Ball, an event that symbolized resilience, unity, and the joy of togetherness. Through her generosity, she ensured that the joy was shared, that the fruits of our collaboration were not just a celebration for a few, but a shared memory of triumph for all volunteers and staff. As we remember Mrs. Clara Ruthmae Bell, we are reminded of the beauty that humanity can hold. Her kindness was a gentle reminder that in a world that often forgets to pause, there are still those among us who embody the purest form of human compassion. We deeply miss her presence, her contributions that touched lives, and the unconditional warmth that seemed to embrace us whenever she was near. Today, we not only mourn the loss of a cherished member but also embrace the challenge to mirror her example. May we each find it within ourselves to embody the essence of Mrs. Bell’s spirit in our daily interactions. Let us extend an extra hand, share a kinder word, and walk with a more open heart, as we continue to weave the legacy of Mrs. Clara Ruthmae Bell into the very fabric of our community.

THE RED CROSS FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES The Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality: these seven Fundamental Principles sum up the Movement’s ethics and are at the core of its approach to helping people in need during armed conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies. These principles unite the components of the Movement – the ICRC, the National Societies and the International Federation – and enable them to provide effective, unbiased assistance to people in need. They are mandatory rules of conduct that the Movement’s components are required to follow at all times, and States must respect this necessity. The Fundamental Principles are key to the Movement’s identity. Adherence to these principles ensures the humanitarian nature of the Movement’s work and brings consistency to the broad range of activities it undertakes around the world. The principles provide a common bond for the National Societies, which vary greatly in structure, culture and membership. Humanity: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours – in its international and national capacities – to prevent and alleviate suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for every human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples. Impartiality: The Movement makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress. Neutrality: In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature. Independence: The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement. Voluntary Service: The Movement is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain. Unity: There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory. Universality: The Movement, in which all National Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
