OBITUARY

T

he story of Roscow Archibald Livingstone Davies begins with his birth on the 9th of September 1939, in Nassau, Bahamas. He was the 5th child and 4th son of Hall of Fame Athlete Samuel Edwin Price “Sir Day” Davies and Doris Winifred Sturrup-Davies. Roscow received his early education at the Southern Junior and Senior Schools and after successfully completing the entrance exam, he was afforded the opportunity to attend THE prestigious Government High School. After completing high school, Roscow joined the Bahamas Telecommunication Corporation as a Trainee Technician. He steadily moved through the ranks from Supervisor to Manager and on to Executive Management. During his tenure with Batelco, Roscow pursued and accomplished many academic achievements, beginning with a certification in Electrical Engineering and City and Guilds of London Institute Telecommunications Certificate, Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology from Florida International University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Miami and Technical Colleges in Colchester and Chelmsford, Essex, England. His career with Batelco spanned forty-one plus years, all of which were served with honour and distinction. Roscow, was a multifaceted man who wore many hats. He was a family man, church man, sportsman and a Mason. ROSCOW THE FAMILY MAN: After a courtship that started when Roscow laid eyes on the lovely Mavis Elizabeth Barry-Tynes at the Big J’s Ice-cream Parlour on Mount Royal Avenue, they were wed on 9th September 1961, at St. George’s Anglican Church. This union produced three sons: Stephen, Trevor and Kevin. Roscow, was devoted to his wife of almost 60 years; and his boys, whom he and Mavis raised with firm, but loving hands. When his grandchildren came along, they became the center of his life. He never failed to make time to attend dance recitals or soccer games, pick up from school or drive them to their various appointments. He showered them with love and affection, passing on words of wisdom as he moved along. ROSCOW THE CHURCH MAN: Roscow was embedded into the very fabric of St. George’s Anglican Church. He made time for regular worship with his family, attending the 9:00 a.m. service on Sunday mornings. He also regularly attended the 6:00 a.m. mass on Wednesday mornings. Roscow was intricately involved in the many ministries of the parish, especially the Anglican Church Men serving as Secretary and Treasurer for many years. At the time of his death, he served as the Assistant Treasurer. The A.C.M.’s annual boat ride was his baby, organized to the hilt. Roscow also served on the Vestry, as the

People’s Warden and held other positions in the parish. He also gave service in the wider Anglican Community as a part of the Cursillo Movement, a member of the Diocesan Council and the Diocesan and Provincial Synods. For the past 29 years, Roscow served as the Treasurer for the parish of St. George, meticulously keeping in order the finances of the parish. This in itself is a testament to his integrity and honesty. His life was one of service to God and his fellow man. ROSCOW THE SPORTSMAN: Roscow was an avid sportsman, playing a variety of sports over his lifetime, including cricket, baseball, softball and tennis, but he loved the game of football, aka soccer. He entered senior league football as a member of St. George’s Football Team in 1956. In 1957, at the tender age of seventeen, he was the youngest player selected to represent the Bahamas on an All-Star team in the first International Match against the Coral Gables Soccer Club in Miami, Florida. As a National Team player, he represented the Bahamas at the C.A.C Games in Panama in 1970, the Dominican Republic in 1974 and the Pan American Games in Colombia in 1971. Following the establishment of the Bahamas Football Association (BFA) in 1967, Roscow was elected to the office of Vice President and served in that capacity until 1979. In 1980, he was elected as President of the Bahamas Football Association and served until 1989. It was under his leadership that the BFA thrived, and the game of football saw considerable growth and development in the Bahamas. Roscow was recognized for his contributions to this sport that he dearly loved, by having the field at the Bahamas Football Association’s Development Center at the Blue Hills Complex named in his honor. Today, the “Roscow A. L. Davies Soccer Field”, stands as a prominent reminder of his devotion to this sport. His love for sports led to Roscow’s involvement in many sporting activities notably: • H e served as a Charter member of the first National Sports Advisory Committee; • E lected as a Vice President of the Bahamas Olympic Association in 1984, where he served until 2008. During this period, he represented the Bahamas as Chef de Mission of the Olympic Delegation at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea in 1988 and Barcelona, Spain in 1992. Also, the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Other contributions were made at Games in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, Atlanta, Georgia and Manchester, England; • I n 1976, he was a founding member of the Bahamas Association of Certified Officials (BACO) for Track and Field in the Bahamas. He remained an active member of the group until his death; • H e was inducted into the National Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2013;

• A s a member of the Bahamas Anti-Doping Commission, he served as the Chairman of the Education and Training Committee and remained an active member of this Commission until his death. ROSCOW THE MASON: Masonry was another area of Roscow’s life to which he was dedicated for over 50 years. As a member of the Prince Hall Family of Master Masons, he served as Most Worshipful Grand Master of Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Deputy of the Orient for Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Grand Worthy Patron for Prince Hall Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star for the Bahamas. At the international level, he was elected and served for two years as the Co-Chair of the Conference of Grand Worthy Matrons and Grand Worthy Patrons, Order of the Eastern Star. Roscow had a significant impact in the lives of the fraternity membership, young and old alike. He possessed rare qualities that attracted others to him. Always willing to give wise counsel, he was one to go to when things seem dismal. His experience and calm demeanor was one of his greatest traits that built confidence, trust and respect to brothers and sisters alike. An upright man and mason he exemplified the tenets of the order for all to follow and challenged all others alike to be the best they could be. Not settling for mediocracy he was a man who prided himself in doing things well and left his mark on his work. He was treasured in the fraternity, one who was respected and cherished to the end. ROSCOW THE MAN: Dedicated, self-assured, calm, slow to anger, kind, gentle, intelligent, meticulous, organized, humorous, and unassuming are words used by persons to describe this giant of a man, who lived quietly, but boldly. He was respected and loved in every sphere of his life. He held us all to a higher standard and expected us to be the best versions of ourselves always. After a short illness, he slipped away as quietly as he lived, at 1:03 p.m. on Tuesday, 13th July 2021. In recognition of his tremendous contributions to the nation, Roscow was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s New Years and Birthday Honours 2020, which was presented posthumously on Tuesday, 20th July 2021. He was a man among men. Daddy, Dad, Grandpa, Past Grand Master, Past Grand Patron, Roscow will be immensely missed by us all. May he rest in peace. Roscow Archibald Livingstone Davies is survived by his: Wife of 59 years, Mavis;

ORDER OF SERVICE THE RECEPTION OF THE BODY CELEBRANT: With faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the body of our brother ROSCOW for burial. Our brother was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly Father, the giver of life, that He will raise him to perfection in the company of the Saints. People: Amen. CELEBRANT: Praise be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all consolation! He comforts us in our afflictions and thus enables us to comfort those who are in trouble, with the same consolation we have received from Him. People: Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. CELEBRANT: I bless the body of ROSCOW ARCHIBALD LIVINGSTONE with the holy water that recalls his baptism of which St. Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. By baptism into his death we were buried together with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection. All: Amen. (The pall is now placed on the casket, as a reminder of his baptism and in hope of the resurrection.) CELEBRANT: On the day of his baptism, ROSCOW put on Christ. In the day of Christ’s coming, may he be clothed with glory. People: Amen. CELEBRANT: ALL

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

CELEBRANT: Let us pray: O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our brother ROSCOW. We thank you for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before, through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. THE PROCESSION (The priests and clerks go before the body as the following sentences are exclaimed) Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and who ever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His compassion never fails: every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23. Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:. I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to

come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord: so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9. We brought nothing into this world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the Name of the Lord. Job 1:21. The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deuteronomy 33:27. INTROIT HYMN | O JESUS, I HAVE PROMISED O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Be Thou forever near me, My master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my guide.

O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee That where Thou art in glory There shall Thy servant be. And Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, My master and my friend.

O let me feel Thee near me! The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear; My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But Jesus, draw Thou nearer, And shield my soul from sin.

O let me see Thy footprints, And in them plant mine own; My hope to follow duly Is in Thy strength alone. O guide me, call me, draw me, Uphold me to the end; And then in Heav’n receive me, My Savior and my friend.

O let me hear Thee speaking In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self will. O speak to reassure me, To hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul. PREPARATION OF THE EUCHARIST CELEBRANT: PEOPLE:

Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

The Celebrant then says: CELEBRANT: PEOPLE:

CELEBRANT: Let us pray: Almighty God, we remember before you today your servant ROSCOW ARCHIBALD LIVINGSTONE and we pray that, having opened to him the gates of larger life, you will receive him more and more into your joyful service that, with all who have served you in the past, he may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The congregation sits. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST LESSON | WISDOM 3: 1-5, 9 | Read by Sharelle Sawyer-Ramroop (God-daughter) Reader: A reading from the Word of God written in Wisdom 3:1-5, 9 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. Reader: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God The congregation remains seated. The Psalm is led by the Choral Ensemble Psalm 133 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Oh, how good and pleasant it is, * when brethren live together in unity It is like fine oil upon the head * that runs down the beard. Upon the beard of Aaron, * and runs down upon the collar of his robe. It is like the dew of Hermon * that falls upon the hills of Zion. For there the Lord has ordained the blessing; * life for evermore.

Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord * and let light perpetual shine upon him. NEW TESTAMENT LESSON | 1st THESSALONIANS 4: 13-18 | Read by Simone E. R. Davies (Grand-daughter) But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. Reader: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. (The mourners and the congregation stand out of respect for the gospel as gradual hymn is sung.) GRADUAL HYMN | TEN THOUSAND TIMES, TEN THOUSAND. Ten thousand times ten thousand In sparkling raiment bright, The armies of the ransomed saints Throng up the steeps of light; ’Tis finished, all is finished, Their fight with death and sin; Fling open wide the golden gates, And let the victors in.

O then what raptured greetings On Canaan’s happy shore; What knitting severed friendships up, Where partings are no more! Then eyes with joy shall sparkle, That brimmed with tears of late; Orphans no longer fatherless, Nr widows desolate.

What rush of alleluias Fills all the earth and sky! What ringing of a thousand harps Bespeaks the triumph nigh! O day, for which creation And all its tribes were made; O joy, for all its former woes A thousandfold repaid!

Bring near Thy great salvation, Thou Lamb for sinners slain; Fill up the roll of Thine elect, Then take Thy power, and reign; Appear, Desire of nations, Thine exiles long for home; Show in the heav’n Thy promised sign; Thou Prince and Savior, come.

THE HOLY GOSPEL | JOHN 14: 1-6 Gospellor: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Gospellor: People:

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John, the 14th chapter, beginning at the 1st verse. Glory to Christ our Saviour

Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Gospellor: People:

This is the Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ, our Lord.

CELEBRANT: Let us with confidence and hope confess the faith into which we were baptized, as we say, ALL: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Led by: Sydney & Kaitlyn Davies & Jade Forbes (Grand-daughters) Leader: We have gathered to celebrate the entry of ROSCOW, into life eternal. People: To affirm with praise and thanksgiving the goodness of the Lord. Leader: Let us rejoice in God’s presence with us, in death as in life among those who now see God face to face. People: Our lips will shout for joy, for God’s love is over all that God has made. Blessed be God’s glorious Name forever! Leader: We feel the pain of separation, we are conscious of our loss, but we hope in Jesus Christ. People: We give thanks to God from whom comes all life and death and who surrounds us in both. We have affirmed our faith and rejoice in Christ’s victory over death, which is God’s promise to us. Leader: Lord, you raised the dead to life; People: Give to our brother ROSCOW eternal life. Leader: Our brother ROSCOW was washed in baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. People: Give him fellowship with all your saints. Leader: Our brother ROSCOW was nourished with your Body and Blood. People: Grant him a place at the table in your heavenly kingdom. Leader: Comfort us, Lord, in our sorrows at the death of our brother ROSCOW. People: Let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to you our brother ROSCOW who was reborn by water and the Spirit in Holy Baptism. Grant that his death may recall to us your victory over death and be an occasion for us to renew our trust in your father’s love. Give us we pray, the faith to follow where you have led the way; and where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit to the ages of ages. All: Amen. THE PENITENCE The President shall introduce the Act of Penitence. Celebrant: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence Let us therefore confess our sins.

All: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and one another, in thought, word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are sorry and repent of all our sins. For your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the honour and glory of your Name. THE ABSOLUTION Celebrant: Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE Celebrant: We are the Body of Christ. By the One Spirit we were all baptized into one Body and have all been made to drink of the One Spirit. All: Let us then pursue the things that make for peace and build up the common life. Celebrant: All:

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

OFFERTORY HYMN | FOR ALL THE SAINTS

For all the saints, who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm 0f paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; Thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on His way. Alleluia, Alleluia!

O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, And win with them the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, And singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Celebrant: Through your goodness, Lord, we have this bread and wine to offer, the fruit of the earth and the work of human hands. They will become our spiritual food. All: All things come from you, O Lord, and of your own do we give you. Blessed be God for ever. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Celebrant: All:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Celebrant: All:

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Celebrant: All:

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

CELEBRANT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, Everlasting God: Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of everlasting life. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. CELEBRANT: All Holy and glorious Father, our Creator God, we give you thanks because in your loving wisdom you brought all things into being, and are truly worthy of praise from every creature you have made. Again and again we have turned away from you; yet in every age your steadfast love has called us to return, to live in union with you: for it is your eternal purpose to put new life into all things and make them holy. Through your Son, Jesus Christ who took our human nature upon Him you have redeemed the world from the bondage of sin: and by the power of your Holy Spirit you have gathered a people to yourself, to make known in every place His perfect offering which He made to the glory of your Name. Hear us, therefore, Father, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; And grant that these gifts of bread and wine may be unto us His Body and Blood. For, on the night He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Celebrant: All:

Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant: And so, Heavenly Father, rejoicing in His Holy Incarnation; His Blessed Passion and His Perfect Sacrifice made once for all upon the Cross; His Mighty Resurrection from the dead; His Glorious Ascension into heaven; and looking for His Coming in glory; we offer to you this Bread and this Cup. We pray that you will accept this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and grant that all who eat and drink of the Body and Blood, of your Son, our great High Priest, may be renewed by your Holy Spirit, and be one Body, one Spirit, in Him. Let faith and love increase in us. Unite us with all Bishops, all other ministers of your Word and Sacraments, and with the whole people of God, living and departed, whom you have made for yourself. Confirm us in holiness, that we may be found ready to join the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Apostles, and all your saints, when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again: Forever giving you thanks and praise through Him from whom all good things do come.

With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise: All: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER Celebrant: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray: All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant: All:

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

THE AGNUS DEI Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant him rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant him rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant him rest eternal. INVITATION TO COMMUNION President: My brothers and sisters in Christ, draw near and receive His Body which he gave for you, and his Blood, which He shed for you. Remember that He died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All: Grant Gracious Lord, that we may so eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and drink His Blood that we may evermore dwell in Him and He in us. Amen. COMMUNION HYMN | HERE O MY LORD I SEE THEE FACE TO FACE Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face; Here would I touch and handle things unseen, Here grasp with firmer hand th’eternal grace, and all my weariness upon thee lean. Here would I feed upon the bread of God, Here drink with thee the royal wine of heav’n; Here would I lay aside each earthly load, Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiv’n. I have no help but thine, nor do I need Another arm save thine to lean upon: It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; My strength is in thy might, thy might alone. Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness; Mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing blood; Mere is my robe, my refuge, and my peace: Thy blood, thy righteousness, O Lord my God.

hymn | “Rise Up, O Men Of God Rise up O men of God, Have done with lesser things. Give heart and soul and mind and strength, To serve the King of Kings, To serve the King of Kings.

Lift high the Cross of Christ, Tread where His feet have trod, As brothers of the Son of Man, Rise up O men of God, Rise up O men of God.

POST COMMUNION HYMN | THE KING OF LOVE MY SHEPHERD IS The King of love my Shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never, I nothing lack if I am His And He is mine forever.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill With Thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy cross before to guide me.

Where streams of living water flow My ransomed soul He leadeth, And where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight; Thy unction grace bestoweth; And O what transport of delight From Thy pure chalice floweth!

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love He sought me, And on His shoulder gently laid, And home, rejoicing, brought me.

And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise Within Thy house forever.

The congregation remains standing for the commendation. THE COMMENDATION | Conducted by Fr. Berkley Smith The Choral Ensemble sings the Russian Kontakion of the Departed. Celebrant: People: All:

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy...

Celebrant: Our Father, People: Who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. Celebrant: People:

And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil.

Celebrant: People:

From the gate of hell Deliver his soul, O Lord.

Celebrant: People:

May he rest in peace. Amen.

Celebrant: People:

O Lord, hear my prayer. And let our cry come unto thee.

Celebrant: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray: Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant ROSCOW. Acknowledge, we humbly ask you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of eternal peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light where to live and reign with you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in glory everlasting. All: Amen.

Celebrant: People:

Rest eternal grant unto him O Lord. And let light perpetual shine upon him.

Celebrant: People:

May he rest in peace. Amen.

Celebrant: All:

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

The service concludes with the singing of: THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS (from Messiah) G. F. Handel (1685-1759) The recessional takes place during the organ postlude: ORGAN POSTLUDE: VARIATIONS ON “THE OLYMPIC HYMN” Spyridon Samaras (1861-1917) Arranged by Adrian Archer & Reverend Shazzabazzar Turnquest As the body is borne from the church, one or more of these may be sung or said. Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and giving life to those in the tomb. The Sun of Righteousness is gloriously risen, giving light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death. The Lord will guide our feet into the way of peace, having taken away the sin of the world. Christ will open the kingdom of heaven to all who believe in His Name, saying, Come, O blessed of my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you. Into paradise may the angels lead you. At your coming may the Martyrs receive you, and bring you into the Holy city, Jerusalem. THE COMMITAL One or more of the following sentences may be said: I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Write this: “Happy are the dead who die in the faith of Christ! Henceforth,” says the Spirit, “they may rest from their labours; for they take with them the record of their deeds.” Man born of a woman has but a short time to live. Like a flower he blossoms and then withers; like a shadow he flees and never stays. In the midst of life we are in death; to whom can we turn for help, but to you, Lord, who are justly angered by our sins? Lord God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us from the bitter pains of eternal death. You know the secrets of our hearts: In your mercy hear our prayer, forgive us our sins, and at our last hour let us not fall away from you. Then, while earth is cast upon the coffin, the minister says these words: MINISTER: In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to Almighty God our brother ROSCOW ARCHIBALD LIVINGSTONE and we commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. And we beseech you in your infinite goodness to give us grace to live in your dear love and to die in your favour that when your well-beloved Son shall come again in judgement both this our brother ROSCOW and we ourselves may be found acceptable in your sight. Grant this for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The minister may says: MINISTER: PEOPLE:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

MINISTER: Let us pray. Almighty God, with whom still live the spirits of those who die in the Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful are in joy and felicity; we give you heartfelt thanks for the good examples of all your servants, who, having finished their course in faith, now find rest and refreshment. May we, with all who have died in the true faith of your holy Name, have perfect fulfilment and bliss in your eternal and everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the Spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. And this we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then may be said:

MINISTER: PEOPLE:

Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon him.

MINISTER: May he and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. PEOPLE Amen. MINISTER: The Lord bless him and keep him, the Lord make His face to shine upon him and be gracious to him the Lord lift up His countenance upon him and give him peace. The minister then dismisses the people with these words: MINISTER: PEOPLE:

Alleluia, Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

MINISTER: PEOPLE:

Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God.

HYMN | THE DAY THOU GAVEST, LORD, IS ENDED

The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at Thy behest; To Thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

The sun that bids us rest is waking Our brethren ’neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping, While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And rests not now by day or night.

So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never, Like earth’s proud empires, pass away: Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.

As o’er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away. MASONIC RITES

Husband TO MY

This tribute is to the one I have spent 59 years and 10 months with; the one who has been my life, my love, my protector and my world. You were my rock. I am now praying and wondering how I can cope without you. We have spent time over the years travelling and working together for many organizations. Now I have to figure out how to carry on. Over the years you’ve taught me to be independent. Your calmness always helped me through whatever problems we faced. Now I have to rely on God’s strength and guidance to continue to lead our family in the way we would both like them to go. I thank God for you. You were a man of impeccable character. I was blessed to have you as my husband. You gave of yourself freely to everything that you were involved in. You were an example to many and made a difference in the lives of many both near and far. You have taught me to have the courage to go on without you. I will strive to live on as I know you would want me to do. Roscow I will always remember and treasure everything that we shared and did together. I am sure with God’s help I will survive. I will always love and remember you. Your loving wife Mavis

addy was a daddy’s daddy. He was a man among men. He was a man of deep spirituality who loved his God. The life he lived is an expression of his spirituality. Over the past week, there have been many persons known and unknown who called to express the significant influence he had on their lives. He loved his wife, to whom he was married for 60 years. He loved his children. He loved his church. He loved football. He loved masonry. Roscow Archibald Livingstone Davies is AN EXPERIENCE that you only experience, when you experience that experience which you cannot experience until you experience that experience which is Roscow Archibald Livingstone Davies. If I could emulate him much more than I have to date, I would be a better man, a better husband, a better father and a better priest. I love you Daddy, miss you Daddy. Your son, your brother and your father. RABBI

his is my tribute to a man small in stature but giant in size. Today I thank God for the love and for all that my father did for us. I thank God for the lessons he taught us, the examples he gave and the joy he brought to all of our lives. If every child in the Bahamas grew up with a father like my own, I don’t think we would have half the problems we have today. Thank God for the loving example he set for us and all of the ways that he blessed and enriched our lives. I will always remember one of your favorite sayings, Live simply so that others can simply live. May his soul rest in peace and rise in glory. Trevor

Dad

TO MY

Daddy, Dad, RALD, Chief whatever name I called you by they all had one thing in common; they described who you were to me. Quiet yet powerful whenever you spoke, the way you commanded respect without a loud voice or a “biggerty” spirit, the way you were able to control any situation with your calm demeanor, the way you could take any situation and turn it into a joke, the way you interacted with your Mavis, especially when you disagreed, the way you wore your church socks with short pants, tennis or loafers and thought you looked good, the way you supported me during my soccer career from the day I could walk, through high school, university, men’s league, National team and now into coaching and the way you could actually tell someone to “go to hell” in such a way that they looked forward to the trip. Daddy I miss you so much already! I could not believe that you were laying there, on that gurney as I was rubbed your head one last time and messed up your famous Mohawk that your grandchildren loved so dearly. You looked so peaceful resting there as I quietly said goodbye. Finally, there are only two people that I have ever wanted to emulate, Pele and my DADDY. You are my HERO and I LOVE you very much! G FOR GRAMPA A GIANT OF A MAN! Words cannot express the sorrow, affliction, anguish and agony felt in hearing that you had passed away. Just No words. I cannot express enough appreciation for the time I was able to spend with you throughout the years and everything that you have bestowed upon me. You taught me many things, from owning up to mistakes made - as all men should, to using my left foot more on the pitch, to learning how to stick out and see-through new beginnings no matter how difficult they may be. These are but a few of the many lessons that I will carry throughout the rest of my life and pass down to my children, and their children, God’s willing. You were never the loudest but always the biggest supporter in ALL things. My earliest memories of this would be back at primary and high school Sports Days. You would have your camera out recording every event I participated in and that same evening we would go back to your house and replay it for critique and correction. Looking back on it as a child, I really took those small things for granted at the time. However, you were helping to mold me into a better athlete. I was able to gain a better understanding of sports in general and how it translates into adulthood as far as managing different obstacles or experiences that may come along and ultimately how to obtain my goals in the real world. There are countless, priceless memories, and lessons that I will cherish for the rest of my life Grampa. You have opened doors for me that I did not even know existed through your prayers, actions and even the mention of your name. You were a master of subtle jokes and prudence. You made me wise way beyond my years, and I am, and will forever be, grateful to you. I love you and miss you dearly. - Deuce

rampy you were my one and only. There will never be enough words to describe my immense love and adoration for you, and just the same, there will never be enough words to describe the pain I feel in losing you. Throughout life I watched you in your silent but stern manner walk into rooms and command attention. When you spoke, we all listened and there was no question to whatever you said. You have always been the ultimate, husband, father, brother, friend, and grandfather; in my eyes you could do no wrong! You have ALWAYS shown up for me, whether it was recording my dance recitals, showing up at school for Grandparents’ Day in your best Team Bahamas attire, flying throughout America for both my graduations, or lending your ear whenever I needed advice. I have never made any major life decision without your counsel, which is why it was so important for D’Juan to ask you for my hand in marriage; to get your blessing meant EVERYTHING to me. There are VERY few times that I have seen you shed a tear, but our conversation at last Christmas dinner will forever be my greatest memory of you. I waited until everyone was occupied, and I snuck next to you in the corner. We didn’t need a big display because we’ve had so many secret conversations over the years (for a week straight, I had planned out what I was going to say to you). I told you the wedding date we had chosen and asked if you would do me the honor of walking me down the aisle as your FIRST girl. I didn’t let on, but I noticed the tears well up in your eyes as you said nonchalantly, “yea, sure”. I was so happy! I jumped over and gave you a kiss and a hug and we went back to our dinner. Grampy, I wanted us to have that moment so badly. I knew that you would know the right joke to tell to calm me down. I knew you would not cry, and I knew giving me away would mean just as much to you as it did to me. Grampy, our bond was so special and doing life without you will be very hard. I am definitely a “Grampa’s girl”. Thank you for setting the standard of what kind of man I should have in my life; faithful, trustworthy, respectable, strong, hard-working, family-oriented, grounded in his beliefs, and true. You have spoiled me rotten with your time, care and love. I will miss you FOREVER and I will love you past my lifetime. My life teacher, dancing partner, my one and only. Love, Simone

T

o the Giant of a man with the gentlest soul, the quiet storm who lit up any room we were in, the man with the dry humour but always full of life. He was always there, whether it be a ride from school, soccer games or a dance recital. If there was one person I was sure would laugh at a stale joke of mine or Kaitlyn’s it was him. He was the kind of person that could make anything into a joke and it was always funny. You watched me graduate high school, get into college, play soccer at a college level and in a few months would have seen me graduate with my bachelor’s degree. You were there for every major milestone in the lives of your children and grandchildren and it’s sad that you won’t be here in the flesh to see more but I find comfort in the fact that you’ll be here in Spirit. You touched many people in your life and I am happy and grateful that I was able to be a part of that and apart of your legacy. There are no words to describe how I am feeling but I do know that you are at peace. I will always love you and I miss you. Take your rest Grandpa, till we meet again. Love, Trent I am not sure where to start, or how to say it but Grandpa I know that I am going to miss you so much. You were a man that had so much soul and life. I loved the light that shined so brightly inside of you. The joy and happiness you brought to the people around you. I’ve never heard you raise your voice and that told me the kind man you were. Never boastful. Never prideful. You always knew how to make us laugh with a silly joke. The smile that it brought to my face when I would see you laugh and your shoulders moved at the same, or when you would shimmy your way in the middle of Kaitlyn and I to sit between us, or when you cut a slither of cake for Kaitlyn. The one thing I can say that it was never a dull moment with you. Thank you for all the times you picked us up from school, took Kaitlyn and Trent to soccer practices, me to dance class, taking us to dentist and orthodontist appointments. You watched all of your grandchildren grow up and you’ve watched us reach amazing milestones. Each moment spent with you is a moment to never forget. I love you Grandpa and I am going to miss you so much. Love, Sydney There’s a lot I’m going to miss about grandpa. The way he’d bounce his shoulders when he laughed. His ability to capture the attention of a crowd with a single sentence, and squishing himself between Sydney and I before church. I didn’t think this day would come so quickly. But, I’m happy with the time we spent together! Rest well grandpa! Love, Kaitlyn

Father

TO MY

Dad you have been a source of inspiration to me in all things. I will miss our tête-à-têtes where I taught you how to use the features on the computer, your Facebook account, the apps on your phone, and how to go online to make travel arrangements. You were a lifelong learner who was determined to stay on the cutting edge of technology. I thank you for your wise counsel and for teaching me how to manage people. You have shown me through your quiet strength how not to react, but instead, respond to situations. You have shown us in your living how to walk calmly and placidly amidst the everyday noise. You were our strength and rock. You were of an example of a godly man who was humble and lived peaceably with all men. Your quiet but stern demeanor will always be remembered. I thank you for all that you would have shared with me and all that you would have poured into my life. You were the only father that I knew…I appreciate that you treated me like a daughter. I will miss your dry wit and your ready answer and comment to everything. I will miss your hugs and your kisses. I will miss all of the time that we’ve had with you. I thank God for your life, for your example and for all that you would have poured into our lives. I thank you for your positive influence on my children. Most especially, I thank you for your love. I will miss you greatly. Rest in peace Dad. Italia

Dad

FOR MY

I have been blessed to have not one, but two phenomenal fathers: My DADDY, Caleb and my father-in-law, Roscow – my DAD. He was firm, soft spoken, humorous, meticulous, unassuming, loving and kind – small in stature, but a giant of a man..Dad. I shall miss this gentleman, his jokes, his intellect, his way of showing us his love, and his way with his grandchildren. The dynamics of family dinner will shift a little, but his light will always remain in and around us, for I know he will always be with us. I am grateful for the blessing of Roscow Archibald Livingstone Davies. Rest easy Dad. Much love always, Renée “Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality” Emily Dickerson

Strong Towers, those who by their manner and bearing help us to navigate the streams, seas, oceans and currents of life. They are not always blood related; they may be introduced to our lives by circumstance, friendship or employment. Mr. D., Dad became our strong tower by circumstance and the blessing of claim. Quiet, no fuss Roscow –an intelligent, confident, grounded, well rounded gentleman; able to articulate his position whether for or opposed without malice or brute force; yet the intention of the delivery was always clear. He did not raise his voice and spoke with equanimity to all he encountered high or low. His affection for one was delivered with a smile and a twinkle in his eye; his praise or correction in the same quiet voice. I think it was intentional so that one would be obliged to listen. We shall miss his mischievousness (he and Denny in church) his wisdoms and the delight with which he regaled our gatherings with merriment. But most of all we shall miss that calm assurance of love, support and the assertion by his presence, by his bearing, that no matter the circumstance it would be well. We know it shall be well, thanks to you Dad. We honour you, Dad with the tribute we gave to our Daddy, Caleb B.O. I, “His life was gentle; and the elements So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, THIS WAS A MAN!” Rest With The Ancestors, Dad. A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE ROSCOW A. L. DAVIES BY THE RT. REV’D. LAISH BOYD Bishop Of The Diocese Of The Bahamas And The Turks And Caicos Islands

I wish to offer heartfelt condolences and assurance of prayers to our sister, Mavis Davies, her sons, Father Stephen and his family, Trevor and Kevin and his family, on the passing of our brother, Roscow A. L. Davies. I do so on behalf of the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands, on behalf of the staff of the Diocesan Office, and on behalf of my wife, Joann, and our sons. Roscow Davies was a soft-spoken, gentle giant with a colossal footprint. He was an example of the best of Anglicanism, a diverse mix of gifts and service: • a decent, Christian man who took his faith seriously, • a family man par excellence, • a dedicated and stalwart employee during his working years, • an athlete who participated for many years, and also gave back to sports – especially to soccer - for the rest of his life, allowing many to have their lives transformed by sports, • a community-minded man, demonstrated in many ways, particularly in his involvement with Prince Hall Masonry, representing the best of what that fraternity stands for, • a wise man who guided, counselled, mentored and encouraged many – including me, • a churchman who gave so much of his life, energy, time and resources to numerous ministries of the church, in his parish home of St. George’s in the Valley and beyond. He was a Bahamian son from humble beginnings, the sum total of whose contribution is most extraordinary. As the scriptures say of Abel and his life, the same can be said of our departed brother: “Though he is dead his life still speaks.” (Hebrews 11:4). We thank God “for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage.” (Book of Common Prayer, page 374) Thank you, Brother Roscow, for your life and witness. Thank you, Sister Mavis and family, for sharing him with us. May his example and contribution move us all to deeper commitment and service. May he rest in peace.

The Bahamas Football Association Nassau, Bahamas-It is with profound sadness the Bahamas Football Association and President Anton Sealey acknowledges the passing of Past president Roscow AL Davies on July 13th, 2021. Our deepest condolences go out to Mrs. Mavis Davies and his sons, Fr. Stephen, Trevor and Kevin and their families. Roscow A.L Davies is a legend in Bahamian soccer history and will always be remembered for his investment in the growth and development of Bahamian Football. In 1956 Davies began his playing career with the St. Georges Football Club. In 1957 at the age of 17 he was the youngest player selected to represent the Bahamas on an all-star team in our first international match against the Coral Gables soccer Club in Miami Florida. He continued his playing career by representing the Bahamas at CAC games in Panama in 1970, Santo Domingo in 1974 and the Pan American games in Columbia in 1971. He transitioned from the pitch to the administration side of Bahamian football as a vice president and subsequently elected President 1980-81. Roscow served with meritorious distinction over the years and at this time we would be remiss if we did not honor the personal sacrifices both Mavis and Roscow made in the name of Bahamian Football. In his honor, the Bahamas Football Association named the development center in the Baillou Sporting Complex after Mr. Davies. Today thousands of young men and women play and develop their skills at the complex named after a giant of a man. He left behind a legacy of soccer playing and coaching family in the form of Kevin Davies, Assistant Men’s National team coach, Fr. Stephen Davies, Rabbi to us in the soccer community, Kaitland, his soccer playing grand daughter and Trent his grandson. In 2019, the Bahamas Football Association on celebrating its 50th Anniversary honored Mr. Davies with the Beacon of Light Award for Administration at its banquet. Thank you Roscow for your immeasurable assistance and legacy and may eternal rest grant unto him oh lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

TRIBUTE FROM ST. HILDA’S CHAPTER NO. 1 “Say not in grief, ‘he is no more’, but in thankfulness that he was” -Hebrew ProverbThe Order of the Eastern Star (OES) teaches us many beautiful lessons honouring womanhood. We realize our important duty as women whose lives transitions through the labyrinth of human life and the many roles we play. The labyrinth is best travelled with the aid of another. While our Sisters serve as beacons of strength and support to aid our journey, our Brothers are also pivotal. We in St. Hilda’s recognize the bonds of filial love among our membership because they shape and mould us into better human beings during our womanhood years. As the Hebrew Proverb stated, “… he is no more, but we are thankful that he was”. PGWP Davies was much more than a Patron to our Chapter and, we are truly thankful that he was, who he was. He was an exemplary man in respect to his character and, his mentorship extended beyond filial love to storge love which often occurs between a parent and a child. Brother Davies never left St. Hilda’s unattended or its ritualistic work undone. We called him, “Past Grand Everything” for he was ever present for any and everything, St. Hilda’s. As the longest sitting Assistant Secretary he kept our books immaculate. He excelled at everything he did: husband, father, scholar, athlete, Mason, Star, Brother - you name it, he did it well. Our Chapter is better because of you and we pledge to continue your legacy. We know that you fought hard to keep us a cut above and we are all the better for it. You protected

us in and out of the Chapter room and we thank you. We thank you for ensuring that every ritualistic ceremony was performed with the highest quality possible. If we strayed, you corrected in the most humble and jovial manner. We still say, “no one can perform an installation ceremony quite like Brother D”. When no one else donated, you did! When no one else showed up, you did! When no one else understood, you did! When something did not make sense, you brought clarity! You taught us discipline and that mediocrity just would not cut it, but most of all, you taught us COMMON SENSE! Brother Roscow Archibald Livingstone Davies, when all is said and done, the only thing left to say is, Thank You for moulding excellence and Godly principles in us. Your desire for excellence and morality stemmed from your parental traits which was a naturally occurring love rooted in the deep emotional connection nurtured in each of us. Thank you for giving us light on the dark days, hope when things were grim, but most of all, thank you for treating us like the Queens we are. Thank you for letting the world know that we are Fairest Among Thousands Altogether Lovely. The world has lost a giant of a man, we love you Past Grand Everything! Until then… “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift”, 2 Cor. 9:15. With respect, love and fond memories of the Past Worthy Matrons, the Past Worthy Patrons, the Past Officers, the Worthy Matron, the Worthy Patron, the Officers, the Brothers and the Sisters of St. Hilda’s Chapter No. 1. Farewell our Brother!
