TThis year marks the seventh edition of the DTSP Wolf Pack Track and Field Classic. By my own admission, I just love the slogan of this exciting meet –“It’s Hunting Season”. Though poetically metaphoric, it truly is a time when we hunt for the best talent not in The Bahamas, but also on the planet.
This track classic is also a special treat for us, as we honour the works of a living sporting legend, President Mike Sands. He has trodden the long, unending road of track and field throughout The Bahamas and now has made his last stop in Monaco, the headquarters of World Athletics where he sits as World Athletic Council Member and President of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC). He has truly been a significant architect of Bahamian Athletics, leading the charge and bearing the gift of so many globally iconic Bahamian athlete.
Through it all, in spite of all his lofty achievements, he has always demonstrated a stronger commitment to God, as a faithful Adventist, and an equally committed faithful family man. In fact, I often laugh when he says that he goes to the food store every Sunday to prepare Sunday dinner for his family. Not sure what food must taste like on a Sunday afternoon in the Sands house, but suffice to say, it can’t be too bad, since he keeps on cooking.
A Mason’s Addition groundsman, a prolific Backgammon player or rather “professional”, Sands has always had the common touch. Though having a complex
personality of a shield that can protect a friend and sword that fights off the enemy, he has set his place at the table of one of the most memorable sporting personalities of our time.
I therefore wish to congratulate DTSP on the selection of fine choice of an honouree and I look forward to yet another exciting day of competition, comradery and good ole athlete hunting. I especially wish to congratulate Larry Clarke for always his kind considerations and commitment to the Sport who is always wonderfully supported by his lovely wife and hunting pal, Gail Clarke together with their wonderful cast of coaches, parents and athletes.
Together, let’s hunt for gold.
Drumeco D. L. Archer President Bahamas Association of Athletic Association
The D.T.S.P Wolf Pack Track and Field Club is honored to host another exciting track meet dedicated to the development and betterment of young student-athletes in The Bahamas. Since our inception, we have always been guided by Christian principles that promote integrity, discipline, structure, and hard work.
This year marks the beginning of a new era for the DTSP Wolf Pack, as the last of our original members have matriculated to an institution of higher learning. We eagerly anticipate the achievements of a new generation of student-athletes as we usher in the “New Dawn” era.
These meets provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents and hone skills that will help them become responsible, valued members of society. Each year, we choose a theme to reflect the dedication and commitment of our athletes.
This year’s theme, “I Come to Get Me,” encapsulates the pride and determination we aim to instill in our athletes. It symbolizes their commitment to competing with intensity and striving for excellence, not just in athletics, but in all aspects of life, including academics.
Through hard work and discipline on the field, our athletes gain skills and values that translate seamlessly into other areas of life. As a small but mighty organization of 27 athletes, we quietly contribute to our community, guided by the belief that it is better to give without seeking recognition.
Despite being a relatively young club, the D.T.S.P Wolf Pack has achieved remarkable success, such as:
• Carifta Silver Medalist and Qualifiers
• North American, Central American, and Caribbean (NACAC) Qualifier
• Junior Pan American Games Gold Medalist
• Junior World Athletics Team Member
Additionally, our annual Andros Boot Camp, now in its 4th year, equips our athletes with the endurance and conditioning needed for the upcoming season.
Looking to the future, we are committed to expanding our middle- and long-distance program—an area where The Bahamas traditionally underperforms—while continuing to expose our athletes to international competitions.
We take immense pride in our alumni’s achievements.
Four have earned master’s degrees, six have graduated with bachelor’s degrees and others are pursuing their first degrees. Many of these former athletes return annually to mentor current members, volunteer at our events, and continue contributing to the club’s legacy.
This year, we are privileged to honor Mr. Mike Sands, a distinguished former sprinter and a trailblazer in sports administration.
Mr. Sands represented The Bahamas at the Summer Olympics in 1972 and 1976, serving as the nation’s flag bearer on both occasions. His athletic accolades include being the first Bahamian gold medalist at the 1975 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics and earning a bronze medal at the Pan American Games the same year. As a tireless advocate for nation-building and the development of national athletes, Mr. Sands exemplifies the values we hold dear. This year, we proudly induct him into the D.T.S.P Honorees Hall of Fame.
Track and field is much more than a sport—it is a platform for cultivating life-long values and personal growth.
Through the discipline of regular training, athletes learn the value of consistency, time management, and goal setting—skills that transcend the track and prepare them for academic and professional success. Track and field imparts the importance of accountability and ownership with athletes quickly realizing that their performance is a reflection of their effort, preparation, and mindset.
Moreover, the competitive nature of the sport teaches grace under pressure and respect for competitors, cultivating sportsmanship that is essential in building strong, characterdriven leaders.
At D.T.S.P Wolf Pack, our mission is to instill these values in every athlete, ensuring that their journey with us contributes not just to their athletic accomplishments, but to their overall growth as responsible citizens and future leaders.
To all athletes, coaches, parents, sponsors, officials and fans, welcome to the D.T.S.P Wolf Pack 7th Annual Track and Field Meet. We wish every athlete success and hope you enjoy the event.
Remember: “I Come to Get Me!” Thank you.
Coach Larry Clarke President, DTSP Wolfpack
Michael ‘Mike’ Sands began his early education at Bahamas Academy in Nassau.
He was later educated in the United States, studying at Sheepshead Bay High School, in Brooklyn New York before graduating from Penn State University through a full athletic scholarship.
Mike is a former Track and Field athlete. As a teenager, he excelled in the sprints and at the tender age of 17 he became the youngest member of the team when he first represented The Bahamas in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay that included Tommy Robinson, Kevin Johnson and (Dr.) B.J Nottage, during the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Two years later, he was selected to represent The Bahamas at the 1972 summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany where he was chosen as the flag bearer. He was also a quarter finalist in the 100m and ran in the heats of the 200m and the 400m relay.
While at Penn State, Mike won several Intercollegiate (IC4) Conference Championship titles for the Nittany Lions. He also earned several All-American honors, the first of which as a finalist in the 440yard relay at the 1973 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
At the 1974 NACAA Championships in Austin, Texas Mike was a 100yd and 220yd dash semifinalist.
1975 was arguably Mike’s best season when he posted personal best times of 10.1 in the 100m, 20.58 in the 200m and 45.20 seconds in the 400m. In the process, Mike simultaneously held the Bahamas National records in the aforementioned events. The latter of which stood for 21 years.
At the 1975 NCAA Indoor Championships in Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, Mike made history by becoming the first Penn State Track and Field athlete to ever win an NCAA Indoor title.
As a result of this accomplishment, Mike’s legacy is permanently etched in the Penn State Nittany Lions Track and Field Wall of Fame, with a life size poster displayed in his honor.
Later that year Mike competed in the 400m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, in Provo, Utah.
In the semifinals, Mike established a new stadium record of 45.46 seconds in winning his heat. Unfortunately, due to injury he finished fifth during the finals.
Mike Sands became the first Bahamian to win a gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Championships, in winning the 400m title at the 1975 event in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
At the 1975 Pan Am Games in Mexico City, Mike claimed a bronze medal in the 200m and placed fourth in the 400meters.
During the 1975 Bahamas’ National Track and Field Championship Mike displayed his versatility as a sprinter by claiming titles in the 100m in 10.0(w), 200m, 20.7 and 400m in 45.7 seconds, a feat yet unmatched.
Mike’s second Olympic appearance followed at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, where he again served as the nation’s flag bearer and the first in an Independent Bahamas. He was selected to compete in the 100m and 400m, advancing to the quarter finals in the longer distance. 1976 was to prove to be his last competitive Olympic Games, though despite competing in smaller local and regional events following those Games he retired from active competition in 1981.
Mike acknowledges that one of his proudest moments in Track and Field was serving as Manager of Team Bahamas on the historic
achievement of Frank Rutherford’s bronze medal performance at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Following his retirement from sprinting and through the insistence of then BAAA President, Alpheus Finlayson, Mike transitioned to administration of the sport, commencing with the position of becoming the Athletes Representative and later Public Relations Officer for the Bahamas Association of Athletics Associations(BAAA) Mike would go on to assume roles of greater responsibilities. He was elected President of the BAAA in 2009 and served several nonconsecutive terms.
He served as a Vice President of The Bahamas Olympic Committee and Vice President of the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) from 2007-2011.
In 2019, Mike made history by becoming the first Bahamian to be elected President of NACAC, which is one of six Area Associations of World Athletics. The others being Africa, Asia, Oceania, South America and Europe.
By virtue of this position, Mike is a World Athletics Council Member and Area Representative for the 38 Member Federations within the NACAC Area.
In 2023, Mike was given a huge sign of approval when he was re-elected unopposed as the top official of that regional body for a second four term at the NACAC Congress in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Mike Sands is married to the former Teresa Gibson and together they are the proud parents of five children and nine grandchildren.
When not engaged in Sports Administration Mike enjoys traveling, reading and backgammon.
The executives, coaches, athletes, guardians and supporters of D.T.S.P. Wolfpack Track Club are delighted that Mr. Sands has consented to being our honoree for our 2025 track meet. He serves as an inspiration to our athletes, and indeed all involved in track and field. We wish Mike many more years of good health and strength as he directs the track and field progress of the region, and beyond.
We salute a true Bahamian hero!
