Expanding OUR

WORLD ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18

Our Mission

Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center promotes Jewish identity. We provide a comprehensive program based on Jewish values, traditions, heritage and culture and are committed to enriching the lives of all the individuals and families in our community.

Our Vision

We, Sid Jacobson JCC, serve our community with quality programs and services that promote social, cultural and physical well-being. Our focus is on our community, those we touch directly and those we touch in collaboration with others, but we also value our connection with K’lal Yisrael (the broad Jewish community) and Israel. We live in a constantly changing world. Our programs and services evolve as our members and their needs evolve. We recognize that serving tomorrow well begins by reaching out today.

Our Principles

CARING | Show compassion and benevolence to others. RESPECT | Respect yourself and those around you. PRIDE | Nourish the spirit by strengthening your sense of Jewish identity, and remain committed to Tikkun Olam.

Within and beyond our walls 58 years ago the doors to the neighborhood’s first community center opened wide. Settled on the property of a former chicken coop in Franklin Square, we launched our very first Early Childhood program. And while the halls and faces may have changed since, our mission to meet the needs of the evolving communities we serve has always remained the same. Community, engagement, and commitment are the hallmarks of our trade. Sid Jacobson JCC is the place where lives intersect within and beyond our walls. It is a grand community living room where individuals become friends, families grow and connections deepen. We continue to enhance the ways we serve those who need us most and those who simply believe we make their lives better. Our cultural programs were more dynamic this year than any time in our history! The lineup included best-selling authors Nelson Demille, Daniel Silva, Joy Mangano, and Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. For the vulnerable, we purchased a bus to transport seniors who no longer drive but who crave connection. We also expanded our Mneme Therapy Art program for frail seniors and special needs populations. Two of those works of art were selected to be the cover art for our program guides. Recovering participants within our Cancer Wellness Center’s grew by 71% this past year proving the viability of revitalizing programs within a non-hospital setting. New this year was the coming together of several departments to create a brand new, (and as yet unnamed), Center for Community Engagement, and the naming of two major Centers that are transforming our world for the better – Randie Waldbaum Malinsky Center for Israel and the Irene & Ronald Cohen Center for Parent Engagement + Education. Their missions and accomplishments are highlighted in this report. We’ve come a long way since our days at the chicken coop. We’ve touched many lives and many lives have had an impact on what we have become today. Chazak, Chazak, V’Nitchazek! (Be strong, be strong, and we will strengthen one another) is chanted when a book of the Torah is completed in synagogue. As we end a new year and begin another, may we continue to strengthen one another as we move forward.

Center for Community Engagement

Harold COHEN “I feel that it is as important for me to be given this opportunity to give back on MLK Day as it is for the recipients of what we do. I felt the vibrations in the room, from the youngsters rushing to keep us supplied, to the people at every station. Keep it up!

Mission

The Center for Community Engagement was launched in the fall of 2017 as our commitment to Tikkun Olam. The center has already evolved into a hub on Long Island that addresses social justice and uses social action to better our community and tackle with heart the issues facing society today. We serve as an educational portal and resource on major issues and a connection point for all who wish to engage in and help individuals and communities in need. Our mission is to create a caring, warm and enriched community that empowers and engages individuals through volunteerism, while also supporting our neighbors in need.

Center for Israel

Tomer KAZES “Coming to the United States and being at the JCC has exposed me to all different types of people and how they connect with Israel. By being here, I bring Israel to the community. Now, when they visit Israel, they will always have a friendly face to visit.“

Mission

The Randie Waldbaum Malinsky Center for Israel was created with the mission to provide opportunities for Long Island communities to develop and celebrate their connection to Israel through innovative and creative programs and partnerships. The center was built on five pillars: education, advocacy, culture, connection and Israeli-American community.

History In 2014, the Center began with one Israeli emissary, Shaliach. Over the years, the Center has continued to grow and this year we have one Senior Shaliach, one Junior Shaliach and five Shinshinim, Israeli high school graduates who defer their army service for a year to serve as ambassadors of Israel. In addition to their work within the walls of Sid Jacobson JCC, the staff works with more than 20 partner organizations including synagogues, schools and other JCC’s. In May of 2018, the Center was officially named in memory of Randie Waldbaum Malinsky. The Waldbaum family felt strongly about the mission of the center and thought naming the Center for Randie would be a fitting tribute to the ideals that she was passionate about.

IRENE & RONALD COHEN

Center for Parent Engagement + Education

Christina SPOLJARIC “What we wanted more than anything was a place where we could feel supported and we found that at the Irene & Ronald Cohen Center for Parent Engagement + Education. We feel we belong and that is the best part of the Center, the community.

Mission

The Irene & Ronald Cohen Center for Parent Engagement + Education’s mission is to address parents’ needs today, and throughout the ever-changing landscape of parenthood. It is a welcoming space that features classes and provides resources, lectures, and personal consultations for all phases of childrearing, as well as to foster important social connections.

Vision

In seeking out the needs of parents in our community, we provide information and resources that are developmentally appropriate. Parents face new challenges and stressors in today’s world. How we communicate and everyone’s preference for information varies, enabling us to meet their needs in a variety of ways. The main areas of focus are: Creating parent communities & networks Providing parent education Accessibility to resources & consultations Facilitating community partnerships We are moving beyond the walls of the JCC to make connections through person to person contact, written communication and interactive events. Positive parenting methods, balancing work and family life as well as engaging in recreational activities for the whole family are just a few of the avenues we are addressing to ensure the needs of parents are being met.
