INTERSECTING LIVES The pace of change in our country and in the world is staggering. One can get whiplash turning from one issue to the next. Psychologists will confirm that the polarization of our society and the rising incivility of our discourse often lead to stress that filters into our everyday lives. When the drama unfolding in our society surpasses the fiction that unfolds on our TV screens, it is worth remembering the myriad of organizations that exist to enable people to connect with one another – person to person, heart to heart, human being to human being. We know that community is built through connection; that intersecting lives builds community. It’s the rationale behind our cover and it is the theme of our capital campaign. For nearly 60 years, Sid Jacobson JCC has resonated with the sounds of life flourishing alongside gentle comforting supports for those in need. From generation to generation we have brought people together within and beyond our own walls - but we are not alone in this. Throughout these pages you will find our partnerships with over 130 organizations, from the UJA-Federation, to local Synagogues, our fellow JCCS, to partner institutions like Mercy First, La Fuerza, Momma’s House, and to area hospitals, to name a few, that help us all connect the dots. We are the centers of giving around you. We are all houses where a soul can find comfort. We are the places where hearts get mended. We are islands of calm where life flourishes. “When the Israelites in the desert built the tabernacle, some brought gold, some brought copper, some brought the work of their hands and some brought the wisdom of their hearts. Together we have all built this community.” In these interesting times we are doubling down; expanding our programs and physically transforming our main campus and our camp to meet the demands of a 21st century center of community. We have raised $7 million of a $12 million capital campaign and are now turning to the wider community to ask for your participation at any level that is comfortable for each family. Want to help? Please reach out to me. When you are asked, we hope you will find us worthy and that your family will join our vision of what can be achieved when we work together. Help us to continue intersecting lives for generations to come, ensuring all will have a place to celebrate, support in times in need, and safety in their home away from home. If you are looking for a soft landing from the chaos outside, you’ve landed in the right place. In this holiday season, be present with us, person by person, heart by heart. From one human being to another, David Black

September 4-December 15, 2018

Travel, Landscape + Street Photography by Alan Sloyer December 14, 2018-April 29, 2019

This exhibition opens a window into the world of Jewish children during the Shoah. Unlike other Holocaust exhibitions, it does not focus on history, statistics or descriptions of physical violence. Instead, the toys, games, artwork, diaries, and poems displayed highlight some of the personal stories of these children, providing a glimpse into their lives during the Holocaust. The exhibition tells the story of survival - the struggle of these children to hold onto life. It describes their attempts to maintain their childhood and youth by creating for themselves a different reality from that which surrounded them. In many cases, it was the children who gave their parents the encouragement and hope to continue their desperate daily fight for survival.

Sloyer was raised to believe that travel is the best education. He has traveled to unique destinations in more than 70 countries, on six continents, over the past four decades. His photos have appeared in The New York Times, New England Journal of Medicine, Chronos, Annals of Internal Medicine and Shutterbug magazine. His photograph, A Winter's Morning, was selected by Nikon for its holiday card for North and South America.

This exhibition was created by Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Center in Israel. Sid Jacobson JCC’s presentation is made possible by the American Society for Yad Vashem, www.yadvashemusa.org.

ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer and provide support to ongoing programs at SJJCC: Friendly Visiting, Virtual Senior Center, Special Needs Programs, Cancer Wellness, Career Services, Community Theater, Literacy Tutors, and more. Through our ongoing food drives, 2,400 units of food were donated to local food pantries last year.

After the hurricanes hit Houston, Puerto Rico, and Florida, we were able to quickly come to the aid of those communities with donation drives for needed supplies.

In 2017, 200 blankets were knitted and crocheted by Knitting for a Cause and donated to St. Francis Hospital’s Infusion Center.

Friendly Visiting Program Connects isolated seniors and volunteers to form mutually rewarding relationships. Weekly visits often include a cup of coffee, a game of cards, talk about daily news, exchange of stories, and more. Engage Jewish Service Corps Coffee + Conversation Coffee + Conversation is time set aside for members of the Engage volunteer program — boomers and beyond — to meet and develop deep, meaningful bonds with like-minded members of the community while sharing volunteer experiences. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

As a way to help support those looking to connect, engage, and take action on the issues that face many communities across the world, including our own, we have compiled a list on our website of organizations dedicated to the education of constructive social engagement and social responsibility.

WE THE PEOPLE

We The People unites great minds in and around the community to engage in meaningful dialogue about pressing issues facing us, and our world, today. Here, you have a voice free from judgment. Here, we discuss the issues on our minds at the local and broader level through advocacy trainings, issue-based education, and civic connection opportunities while meeting our mission to seek out balanced solutions. The goal: to effect change that will result in a better life for all.

COMMUNITIES IN NEED

Rooted in our mission is the understanding of our Jewish identity, the appreciation of human diversity, and a commitment to tikkun olam, repairing the world. Please visit our website for a list of resources in order to help communities in need.
