SID JACOBSON:

A PORTRAIT

2

A KIND, GENTLE SOUL,

Sid Jacobson, Z”L (1918 – 2005) was an innovator with vision far beyond his years. From the time he was a young man, Sid believed that every person has a responsibility to help those who are in need. Tzedakah, (charity), was not only one of the ways Sid practiced his faith, but it was also the principal value he passed down to his children and his family. Sid made everyone feel special. His ability to connect to people on such a profound level was extraordinary… he honored the lives of those around him and they in turn honored him. Community and leadership were primary motivators in Sid Jacobson’s life. Growing up in the era of violent anti-Semitism, Sid believed it was important for Jews to connect in a wholesome environment that formed community and created leadership; a safe haven to meet the needs of the Jewish people. He was, therefore, an early advocate for Jewish community centers, part of a movement dedicated to advancing Jewish life while welcoming all peoples, regardless of race, creed, ethnicity, or identity. When likeminded individuals created the first Jewish community center in East Hills, Sid was at the forefront of its development.

As the building neared completion in 1988, Sid’s children, Marjorie and Mark Gershwind and Kathy and Mitchell Jacobson paid tribute to their parents’ years of service, for what they gave to their family, their community, and the world, by naming the center in their honor. But in a twist born of pure love, his wife, Bernice, Z”L, changed the original intended name – the Bernice & Sid Jacobson JCC – to Sid Jacobson JCC to acknowledge her husband’s unfettered dedication to repairing the world. It has been 61 years since Sid’s “baby” opened. Today, Sid Jacobson JCC is one of the most recognized JCCs in the country, with hundreds of programs, welcoming all peoples and enabling community life to flourish. As foreseen in Sid’s vision, Sid Jacobson JCC today delivers on this promise. As an organization, we are committed to excellence, innovation and to inspiring a generosity of spirit that serves to enhance community, as you will see in the following pages. Our community is forever indebted to this remarkable man and his outstanding family who continue to carry on his legacy. *Sid Jacobson was the founder of MSC Industrial Direct ** In 2009, SJJCC expanded when it purchased 12 acres of woodlands later named the Bernice Jacobson Day School and Camp, home of Camp Jacobson. CJ continues to thrive today.

HEAR FROM OUR

COMMUNITY... Special Needs

Kehilla gives me a place to go to relax and be funny and have friends without having to worry about people judging me. Everyone here works really hard to help us grow. Summer Camps

Entering the second week of camp and my son has already overcome a lifelong fear. Playing in our local pool, he proudly showed off how he swims completely under water, a freedom the camp staff brought to him. Tonight, this mama got to watch her baby conquer the world. And my baby gets to sleep knowing the world is his to conquer. This is what camp JACOBSON is all about! 8

Early Childhood

SJJCC means so much to my family it’s where we met friends and were welcomed into this incredible community. It’s where my son learned to walk, talk, share (sometimes), make friends, his letters and numbers. It’s where my son grew from a baby into a boy w h o i s p r e pa r e d t o ta k e o n kindergarten and the world! Community Engagement

I felt like I needed to do something to make a difference. Since the pandemic, giving back has taken on a whole new meaning. It has been life saving for so many.

Health + Wellness

Thanks to the wonderful group exercise classes over the years, I was able to walk right after having surgery. I know how much work is involved to make SJJCC run as well as it does, many thanks to all the staff for always helping me out.

The Hub

Thank you to all those working at The Hub! Your calm, reassuring voice and continuing support is appreciated and very welcome at a time full of stress.

Jewish + Israeli Connection

We never questioned our commitment to Judaism and living a Jewish life; however, we never felt a connection to Israel, until now! We have learned so much and, more importantly, have made Israeli friends for life.

Adult Day

Knowing that my mom is in a place that’s safe just takes so much worry off of my heart. She’s truly enjoying herself at her programs. She continuously speaks so highly of what she’s doing, how she feels loved, how she feels a part of something. I could not possibly be able to do this without SJJCC. Cancer Wellness

Cultural Arts

We are so grateful that our already incredible JCC has emerged as a true cultural arts center. No longer do we need to go to Manhattan to hear some of the greatest authors and public figures of our time. We are enriched by each and every event.

Naming the Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center in my wife’s memory ensured that others facing cancer could continue to receive free services, even without health insurance

"

It was the worst of times and it was the best of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the winter of despair, it was the spring of hope… Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, 1859

34

A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

To Our Community, In the darkest days of Covid, we operated under two basic premises: brutal honesty and unrelenting optimism. The facts were brutal, but it was the optimism that saved us at every turn. There were many days when we wondered if we would survive. However much we had saved for a rainy day would not be enough unless many angels believed in us. We needed our leadership to launch an emergency campaign. We needed our donors to respond in unprecedented times. We needed the community to experience us differently. We needed our staff to rise to heights never seen before while their own families were hurting. This guide is an homage to all who created so much light through the darkness and a bow to the many that we lost along the way. If I want to convey anything on this page, it is my profound gratitude. The programs, the access points, the connective tissue our community needed were created by the extraordinary people who work here, past and present. Sid

Jacobson JCC staff became masters of reinvention in an age of unpredictability. In the tumult of our times, their aim was stability. In the worst of times, they gave the best of themselves. With the weight of the world on their shoulders, they delivered and then they delivered some more. They have my heart because they exist to touch yours. If you’re reading these words, you are already a part of us. We know that you either helped to sustain our work or that you represent our future. We intend to carry on the vision of Bernice and Sid Jacobson and the brilliant leadership that enabled life to flourish within our hallways and camp grounds. You all have a thousand thanks, but most of all, the commitment of my team to carry the dreams of our community forward for many years to come... With only warm thoughts,

David Black, Executive Director
