PROJECT 1 Minimal Letterforms Brief:

Program: Format:

Process:

2

Using letterforms of a specific typeface, understand the unique visual characteristics of each letter in the alphabet and choose four different letters (uppercase or lowercase) to create a composition exploring symmetry, balance, juxtaposition, contrast, and form/counterform by subtracting what is necessary before legibility is lost. Adobe InDesign + + + +

Black and white print on high quality paper Trim and flush mount to 11 x 14” Bristol Margins: 1.375” left and right, 1.875” top Four 4” squares (two on top, two on bottom) with 1/4” gaps between

For this project, I started off by tracing letters into multiple 1 x1” thumbnail sketches exploring different typefaces and their letterforms. After creating several thumbnails, I chose my three favorite sketches and replicated them into 4 x 4” thumbnail sketches. I chose to demonstrate the typeface Friz Quadrata, because I was really intrigued by the serifs and thick and thin characteristics of the letters. For my final presentation, I used the letters “K,” “W,” “X,” and “Y,” because they produced interesting geometric shapes while maintaining their unique characteristics when the colors were inverted.

PROJECT 2 Type Hierarchy Studies Brief:

Program: Format:

Set 1A Variations

Set 1B Variations 4

With a provided information about a hypothetical design lecture series and specified characteristics of the typeface Univers, create three varied sets of typographical arrangements demonstrating organization and visual principles, such as grid structures, proximity, contrast, grouping/isolation, and symmetry/asymmetry. Adobe InDesign + Trim and flush mount 10 x 10 high quality print on Bristol + Set 1: A. One size / one weight (15 pt. Univers 45) B. One size / two weights (15 pt. Univers 45 and 65) + Set 2: A. Two sizes / two weights (15 pt. and 9 pt. Univers 45 and 65) B. Two sizes / two weights / two styles (15 pt. and 9 pt. Univers 45, 45 oblique, 65, and 65 oblique) + Set 3: A. Two sizes / two weights / two styles (15 pt. and 9 pt. Univers 45, 45 oblique, 65, 65 oblique) + rule B. Any size, weight and style of Univers, with our without rule

Set 2A Variations

Process:

For Set 1 of the Type Hierarchy Studies project, I created four original rough drafts (two for Set 1A using 15 pt. Univers 45, 2 for Set 1B using 15 pt. Univers 45 and 65) by cutting out printed copies of the provided information and pasting them onto trace paper in a well organized manner. Afterwards, I took my work to InDesign and created a final version for Set 1A and Set 1B. Set 2 and Set 3 started off with a different approach. After familiarizing myself with the body copy, I was able to create rough drafts on InDesign rather than cutting and pasting. I created twelve drafts (three for Set 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B using the specified dimensions of varied sizes, weights, and/ or the addition of a rule). For Set 2A, using 15 pt. and 9 pt. Univers 45 and 65, my final presentation showed hierarchy and organization by making the first names of lecturers 9 pt. Univers 45 and last names 15 pt. Univers 65. I explored these varied weights, because it pointed out the information people would most likely recognize. For Set 2B, I used a similar technique to Set 2A. However, we were specified to explore the Univers 45 oblique and Univers 65 oblique. This specification added more character to my final presentation of this set.

Set 2B Variations

Process:

Set 3A called for the same characteristics as Set 2B with an addition of rules. I reorganized my set of information and explored rules by making them a significant part of my final product. I use the rules to my advantage and highlighted the title series, as well as, the titles of each lecture to direct viewers’ eyes. Finally, with the Set 3B, I had the freedom to display the information in any size and weight of Univers with or without rules. I chose to organize my information in a simple hierarchy with plenty of white space. My title was 36 pt. Univers 65, subtitle was 24 pt. Univers 45, and all other information was 15 pt. with varied weights.

PROJECT 3 Book Design Brief:

Program: Format: Process:

Create a book demonstrating the ability to organize supplied text and image on a grid system layout working with only black, white, and grey, plus one spot color if appropriate. Adobe InDesign + Any size + Print on high quality paper and binded The first step in creating my Book Design project was to sketch out thumbnails of my possible spreads using a grid layout. I chose to use a three column grid in my 8 x 8 book. I explored rectangular, circular, and square text boxes along with overlapping images in my thumbnails. After receiving approval, I took to InDesign and started creating my book. I chose to make use of two different saturations of black creating two varied greys with an orange spot color. When creating my thumbnails, I enjoyed the idea of overlapping boxes, which became a very significant part to my book design. My final product was 40 pages and my cover was created to match the designs in my book.

Process:

The final step to my book was to print and bind. At first, I thought the process was going to be very difficult. However, in the end, I realized it was enjoyable and I learned a new skill. The tools I used to bind my book were two c-clamps, a paint brush, wax paper, binding glue, and two pieces of wood. First, I looked at my pages to make sure they were even. I wrapped wax paper around the pages so that glue would not mess up the first and last page. Next, I placed one piece of wood on the top and bottom of my pages, then clamped them together with the c-clamps. Lastly, I took the glue and paintbrush and applied three layers to the ends of my pages. After many hours of drying, I glued my cover page at the binding. Design 115 was a very enjoyable class for me. I learned the importance and beauty of each unique characteristic of a letterform. I studied and portrayed type hierarchy using different sizes, weights, and added rules to display content. Finally, I learned how to combine text and image using a grid layout making this course a great experience for me.
