Sienna Plantation Looks Towards the Future

ienna Plantation is one of the premiere residential communities in the Greater Houston area and has been quickly expanding through major real estate and business developments. With such progress, Sienna Plantation (and Missouri City as a whole) is seeing a population boom which rivals that of the Woodlands during the 1980s. The master-planned community already has an impressive portfolio of developments. In real estate, prime location is highly prized and Sienna Plantation offers convenience to major freeways connected to Houston, but has a relaxed suburban community atmosphere. As Sienna Plantation reaches its 20th anniversary, the original cotton and sugar plantation that birthed this sprawling community lounges sleepily in the corner of Scanlan Road, eagerly looking towards the developments

around it and back at its own colorful history. The land that the subdivision now sits on was first purchased by David Fitzgerald, one of the Old Three Hundred setters of Stephen F. Austin’sd colony. Fitzgerald settled on the east bank of the Brazos River in 1822. Soon after, Austin found out that Fitzgerald was a fugitive in the United States and had to force him to leave the colony. However, Austin allowed Fitzgerald, his son, and slaves to stay in the colony and granted him the title to the land where Sienna Plantation now sits. Jonathan D. Waters, a farmer from South Carolina, purchased David Fitzgerald’s league in 1840. Here, Waters cultivated a variety of crops and developed one of the largest plantations in Texas, which he named the Arcola Plantation. The estate was eventually sold to Thomas W. House in 1872, who was a successful

businessman in nearby Houston. During this time, a man by the name of John Rutherford Fenn operated the plantation for Mr. House. J.R. Fenn was part of a family of early settlers along the Brazos River and had famously escaped captivity from the Mexican Army in 1836. Mr. Fenn oversaw the labor on the plantation as part of the prisoner lease program. The T.W. House plantation, where Sienna Point is located today, saw many prisoners leave their footprints on its land from 1867 to 1913. For almost five decades, the Sugar Land Sugar Company sub-leased prisoners to plantations in the area, which the company itself leased from the Texas Prison System. In 1913, Houston mayor Thomas H. Scanlan bought the estate and was endowed to the Scanlan Foundation, which sponsored the Houston Roman

Continued ~ Catholic Dioceses. The Cenacle Sisters operated a retreat on the property from the 1950s to 1972. The Cenacle Sisters gave the land its current name, Sienna Plantation, after the Siena region of Italy. However, it was the Johnson Development Corporation, which owns the property today, that developed it into a masterplanned community in 1978. The project suffered from setbacks and stagnation during the economic crisis of the 1980s. In the early 1990s, a billionaire entrepreneur from the Philippines, Tan Yu, who had extensive experience with large-scale business projects in Asia, revitalized the real estate development of Sienna Plantation. Today, Johnson Development Corporation is seeing the reward of their efforts, and is ready to set in motion even more ambitious plans for the community. The development company is also getting ready to create a street through Sienna Point, the site of the old slave quarters, that will provide residents direct access to FM 521. The street is projected to be completed by early 2018. Likewise, a $25 million elementary school will be opened in August 2017.

The old plantation of Jonathan D. Waters, which some locals claim is haunted by a woman in a red dress, had humble beginnings, but is seeing an array of new faces as 21st century settlers occupy that stretch of land along the Brazos. In this county, the past, present and future are all equally vibrant. In 2017, the Johnson Development Corp. will create an emergency access road on Scanlan Road, and when Sienna Plantation’s residents drive by the old house, maybe they can reflect on how the momentum of history came to form this tightknit community today.

5 Staycation IdeasThis Summer

ummer is in full effect and that means fun family activities to either soak up the sun or stay away from its blazing rays. Although gas prices went up from this past February’s much-embraced low cost, and the current price per gallon is only slightly cheaper than last July’s, it shouldn’t dissuade your family from exploring this large, beautiful state. In fact, you don’t even have to go far to have some good times with your family and friends. So we’ve made a list of 5 staycation ideas you can check out this July. Whether you’re into outdoors or looking to stay cool inside, our county has a little something for everyone. 1. George Observatory: No summer activities list is complete without mentioning George Observatory, which is deep in the heart of Brazos Bend State Park. George Observatory has been a consistently popular day trip for families since its telescope began pointing to the heavens. The great thing about George Observatory is its location. You can enjoy the network of trails at Brazos Bend State Park, take selfies with freeroaming alligators, and have a picnic after you’re done looking at the cosmos. Amateur astronomers can also come by every Saturday night and bring their own telescopes.

2. Wake Nation Houston: This place is one of the hidden gems of the area, which is just down Highway 6 from Sienna Plantation, off 288 in Rosharon. Wake Nation Houston boasts an impressive aerial ropes course, the Aqua Glide Waterpark, a paintball course, and cable wakeboarding. If you’re new to wakeboarding, fear not, they also offer classes for all ages. This is a great way to work on that tan whilst tearing through the waves. 3. Sienna Stables: For a calmer family outing, check out Sienna Stables, which offers therapeutic riding for patrons looking to get in touch with nature. If you want to learn equestrian skills such as English or Western Riding, Sienna Stables offers lessons for all age groups as well. They also feature horse shows throughout the year if you want to simply admire these beautiful creatures. 4. Santikos Palladium: in Richmond may not be on the same level of the iconic Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, but this aesthetically beautiful and sleekly modern movie theater has been accumulating a lot of rave reviews from locals. The Ancient Greek theme does not feel gimmicky like other venues that try to pull off such branding, because the wellreplicated Greek architecture harmonizes

perfectly with the Texas-sized space of the venue, and luxury hotel feel. Whether you want to impress your date, chill with friends, or watch the latest superhero movie with your kids, Santikos Palladium is always the right choice on a Friday night. 5. Fort Bend Museum: Fort Bend County has always been a place that warmly embraces newcomers, which is why it has seen an exponential population boom over the last decade, and will continue to grow out of the shadows of big brother Houston. If you’re one of the new settlers in the area, I suggest you take your family to the Fort Bend Museum and learn about this county’s very fascinating history. The museum features many artifacts and exhibitions that chronicles interesting historical events, such as the Jaybird-Woodpecker War and its former seedy reputation as a haven for organized crime. So much for being a sleepy little place, eh? On the grounds are also the well-preserved Moore Home and Long-Smith Cottage. See? You don’t have to go too far to add some excitement and fun to your summer. So forget the stressful road trips or Tokyo vacation for now—stay close to home and explore your own backyard first, because you’ll never know what you might find.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital hosts annual National Cancer Survivors Day Luncheon

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital joined nearly 14 million American cancer survivors in the annual celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day®. Also recognized were the many family members, friends and health care providers whose contributions to and support of cancer survivors help make the celebration possible. The celebration was led by associate chief nursing officer Sally Shen, M.S.N., R.N., NEA-BC. Shen briefly shared how cancer has affected her family before introducing Mary Nugent, this year’s patient speaker, and Sindhu Nair, M.D., hematologist/ oncologist at Houston Methodist Oncology Partners, who delivered the physician perspective as well as the survivor acknowledgment. “You are our inspiration, and I thank you for that,” said Nair. “Here in this room, we have husbands and

Anyone living with a personal history of cancer — from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life — is a cancer survivor, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation®. Additionally, the foundation says that more people are surviving cancer than ever before, which can be attributed to advances in prevention, early detection, treatment and followup care. Cancer, however, does come with many challenges, such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, financial hardships, employment problems and psychological struggles. “Despite these difficulties, cancer

How to Minimize Your Risk for Injury in the Gym ETTING HURT WHILE EXERCISING IS “NOT FAIR” AND IT’S PREVENTABLE WITH THESE SIMPLE RULES

You’re working out. You’re paying the price. You’re pushing it to get in better shape or you’re just pushing it because you love it. Then BAM, you get injured. It’s just not fair. You got injured trying to get in better shape. It’s an oxymoron. • Listen to your body. That’s a good rule while exercising and a good rule 24/7. Let’s use push-ups for example. It’s one of the most beneficial single exercises especially if using a hand grip push-up stand or gripping around the arms of a chair. Some days you can do 20 (for example) and then other days it’s difficult to get past 15. There will soon come a day when you can do 24 without difficulty. Let those good days be how you increase.

• A third rule is to stay within your tissue limits. I’ve had two patients that pushed the weight up too far and pulled the tendon attachments up. I reattached them and pointed out that they were exceeding the weight that their tissue could handle safely. They both listened for a while, about 2-3 years, then started pushing it up and both of them ruptured their bicep tendons off the bone and required surgery. It’s just not worth it. Your body is original equipment. Take care of it. The replacement parts are not as good as the original. • Exercise is great for keeping the muscles, joints, and cardiovascular systems healthy if you do it correctly and don’t overdo it. Do it correctly and enjoy the benefits. Overdo it, and if you live long enough to feel the effects, you will pay for everything. Steve Harris, DC

• Do as many reps as you can correctly perform. Most injuries I’ve seen in 40 years of practice involve pushing the reps too far and getting out of correct form where muscles are “recruited” that should not be involved so they get strained. The strain can misalign the spine, joints or can pull the tendon attachments up off the bone. The tendon pulled up is called an enthesopathy as in tennis elbow and golfers hand. In the gym, many cases involve the shoulders. The best way of dealing with this is not to get injured but the good news is there is a soft tissue technique which can help most cases of enthesopathy.

ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk.
