Preparing For A Fun And Successful Summer
By Lindsay Asawa, Ph.D.
Academics
S
ummer vacation can be an opportunity for fun-filled, educational, and relaxing quality time with our children. On the other hand, it can also be filled with boredom, tantrums, overstimulation, and maybe too much quality time. A little preparation and some helpful guidelines can lead to more of the former and less of the latter. Here are a few ideas:
Structure
Losing the structure and routine of the school year can be an unexpected challenge for many children and families. Before the summer begins, consider creating a visual schedule or plan for the summer. A family calendar can be filled with daily and weekly goals, activities, summer camp schedules, vacations, and appointments. Children also function best when following a consistent daily routine, whether it is during the school year or summer months. Ageappropriate chores can be part of that routine. Chores keep children active and busy, promote responsibility, and provide structure and consistency.
It is also important to keep bedtime and sleep hours as consistent as possible. Although some flexibility is necessary in the summer, adequate sleep is one of the most important ways of preventing problems. When the monthly schedule and daily routine for the summer have been determined, keep all family members and childcare providers informed.
Exercise
Most people acknowledge the health benefits of exercise for children. However, not everyone is aware of the behavioral and emotional benefits as well. Exercise stimulates the brain and releases endorphins. This has a powerful positive effect on children. The brain stimulation improves focus, motivation, self-control, memory, and emotional well-being. Endorphins boost energy levels and make us feel happy. Exercise also improves nighttime sleep and serves as a positive distraction during the day. The summer provides ample opportunity for exercise – swimming, playgrounds, bike rides, sports camps, and plenty of time to play outdoors.
While it certainly does not need to be the focus of the summer months, there is no reason why children should stop learning and practicing what they have learned. It is common to forget information that has been learned after the school year ends, requiring unnecessary time spent reviewing and re-learning when the next school year begins. Instead, the summer can be utilized as a time to practice skills, catch up in areas that are delayed, and even learn something new. This can be accomplished without shifting the focus away from fun and relaxation. Start by scheduling a meeting or phone conversation with your child’s teacher at the end of the school year. Identify areas of concern and set small, manageable goals for the summer. Schedule daily “learning time” in your child’s routine. Provide small amounts of work to complete during this time, keeping it brief (20-30 minutes) and varying work each day. Purchase low-cost and grade-specific workbooks, print free worksheets that are found online, or create a binder with worksheets that the teacher or school has provided. “Learning time” can also be used for tutoring or educational computer games and apps. For students who are excelling in school, the summer can be a time to further their knowledge and keep them intellectually challenged. Consider enrichment programs, special projects, foreign languages, and educational summer camps. For students of all abilities, the summer is a perfect time to make learning hands-on and fun. Visit museums, plan science experiments at home, take a trip to the zoo, cook and bake together, attend weekly library programs, go on nature walks, ask for a free tour of the fire station, and find ways to incorporate learning into daily life.
Behavior
Following the guidelines above will certainly reduce the amount of behavior problems that occur. However, it will not eliminate them. The summer break is a time when children test their parents, become overstimulated, and fight with siblings and peers. Start the summer with June 2017

Continued ~ a set of clearly defined rules and consequences. Discuss expectations with your children before they go into new settings. Keep things as visual as possible – hang up a list of rules, create a behavior chart, and leave written instructions for older children. Be sure to pay attention to good behavior and provide rewards for their efforts (e.g., electronics time, extra bedtime story, movie night). Most importantly, children need adult supervision in the summer time. The rates of injuries and accidents increase significantly in the summer months. Make sure that safety is a priority while your children are having fun!

Last Minute Father’s Day Gift Ideas
f you are wondering what to get Old Man for Father’s Day, I’m right there with you. I always look to outdo my previous attempt at putting a smile on Dad’s face and getting him something that will truly tell him just how much he is appreciated. After all, this is his day. A day where he can tell as many dad jokes as he wants. And a day in which we all must let him finish telling everyone that story everyone has listened to him recount a hundred times before. While trying to avoid clichés, I have at times found myself having to find something last minute because that extravagant idea that I had conjured up seems somewhat impossible. That means giving in into buying those always useful and convenient, but notexactly-exciting shirts, ties, socks or wallets. For those Dads that love to grill, a pizza stone made for a grill can turn any old pizza recipe into a new culinary masterpiece. There are some great options out there and most of them run for less than $50. And let’s face it, who
By Rosanna Vidal
doesn’t love pizza? It’s a win-win for everyone. Man Crates (mancrates. com) has an oh-so cleverly named Mount Rubsmore box of four rub mixes including George Srirachington, Thomas Jeffersalmon, Aburgerham Lincoln, and Theodore Roastevelt that will surely bring happy tears to Dad’s eyes. This box is around $25 and ships the day the order is placed. If Dad likes sports, Astros tickets are always a great choice. Tickets are easy to purchase and find online for as little as $25 each. So Dad can go on speaking way too loudly into his phone without having to worry about germs, UncommonGoods has a PhoneSoap smartphone sanitizer. The sanitizer kills germs using UV light, while the phone
charges (uncommongoods.com, $19.95 for the regular on-the-go pack, or $49.99 for the white sanitizer). If Dad is an adventurer, basically everything from either Academy or REI is a safe bet that’ll surely make him happy. Tip, they have some decent deals online if you shop in time to receive the order before Father’s Day. Something that the little one’s can make for Dad (with adult supervision) is a DIY mug, which is very simple to make. Kiddoes will love to use their imagination to make Dad something he will use every day, and do it with their own hands. For this DIY all you need is a white mug, some paint Sharpie markers, some stencils (optional), a couple of hours, and an oven. Toddlers can also make their own gift by decorating and painting a paper crown made just for Dad. Just cut up the shape of the crown let the kids decorate it to perfection and let it dry. For the more tech advanced Dad, Google’s Chromecast will let him stream all of his favorite movies and television shows straight onto his TV. The Chromecast device is easy to install and elegantly designed. Chromecast can be purchased almost everywhere that sells entertainment appliances for somewhere around $35. At the end of the day, Dad will love anything you put some effort and thought into giving him. June 2017

Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Hosts Annual Sports Physicals
ouston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Sugar Land offers annual student physicals for Fort Bend ISD, Alief ISD, Stafford MSD and any other student athlete needing a physical. The physicians have been associated with local school districts for more than 17 years and have donated more than $500,000 back to those communities.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) requires all high school athletes to undergo and pass a physical examination prior to participating in sports. Physical evaluations include examining height, weight, vision, blood pressure, pulse, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, spine, and all joints in the upper and lower body. Physicians discuss the athletes’ medical history and consult with them and their parents if further evaluation is necessary prior to releasing them to participate in sports. “I grew up in the area and attended Elsik High School, so it is an honor to come back and support the players. We look forward to continuing to support these school districts,” said Vincent Phan, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and team physician. “We truly enjoy working with the schools in these districts.” “Performing physical examinations is just part of being the team physician. Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine physicians support coaches, athletic trainers and players throughout the school year,” added Timothy Sitter, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and team physician. “Partnering with Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine provides a convenient, inexpensive opportunity for our athletes to complete this important physical

Healthy Looking Skin with Homemade Fast Fixes for Acne
ach of us looks into the mirror each day and as we age there are different things we can do naturally to prolong our youthfulness and prevent problems. Here are five ways to reduce acne overnight a rich and emollient eye cream that will hydrate and keep the eye areas from aging faster than necessary; and two wonderful toners with antiinflammatory and antioxidants and Vitamins C and E to keep skin soothed and happy during these summer months! The Five ways to reduce acne overnight are through Aloe Vera, Honey, Basil, Lemons and Ice. Aloe Vera can be grown in your garden and when the first sign of a pimple arising slice a leaf off the pant and squeeze the gel directly onto the affected area and let dry. Honey has so many benefits! Using it one the skin as a salve for about an hour and then wash off and pat dry. Basil leaves are collected for the garden and steeped in warm water to make a tea, dip into the bowl with a cotton pad and apply or transfer to a water spray bottle and place in the refrigerator and spritz for not only a pimple aid but as an overall pick me up on a warm summer day! Freshly
squeezed lemon juice applied directly to the area is a powerful antiseptic. When pimples are infected it helps to reduce swelling by adding cold to the skin directly through ice. The eyes are important and are the first place that we look at each other when we talk to one another. As we age the lines that form around your eyes are a telling sign of how healthy we are and how well we have taken care of ourselves. This eye serum is easy to make, inexpensive and delivers moisture richness that the delicate eye areas need at night for repair. To make take 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa butter. Put all three in a glass mason jar and place in microwave to melt. Once melted, stir together and the place lid on it and apply at night to each eye area weekly. Toners are a great way to infuse the skin and during the summer months and they are super easy to make. I like to make several different ones and keep in my refrigerator to spritz after a day poolside. Here are two that I make often and the whole family enjoys! Matcha Toner is rich in vitamins C and E and has antioxidant properties. To
By Alisa Murray
make it take 2 teaspoons of matcha green tea powder and 1/2 cup of boiling water. Steep and Strain and then place in a spray bottle and spritz as you wish. The Fennel seed and Honey toner smells wonderful and is an inflammatory and great for preventing wrinkles! To make is take 1/2 cup of witch-hazel and combine with 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds, 1 tsp of honey and 2 tablespoons of water. Place in a bowl and let spot for three days then strain and add to a water spray bottle and use as you wish. As you can see most of these items we have at home and in our garden. It is easy to create tinctures, toners, creams and smart fixes for all of our skin types and their needs. Naturally is best without the use of things that we cannot pronounce and chemicals that can do harm. As we age our skin needs different types of things. I hope you enjoy making and using these naturally!

Entrepreneurship: The Glorious Dread
hen I thought about writing an article on starting a business, the first image that popped into my head was a rollercoaster, and funny enough, I had a dream about being on a rollercoaster last night. Coincidence? I think not. You don’t know me (yet), but I’ve had a terrible fear of rollercoasters since I was a kid. When my husband and I started dating at 16, he took me to the County Fair and, in hopes of impressing him, I agreed to ride ‘The Octopus’. Let’s just say someone ended up in tears and it wasn’t Steven. Since then I’ve avoided rides at all cost. Well, in my (very real) rollercoaster dream last night, I felt the anxious anticipation mixed with intense fear as the rollercoaster inched up to its peak, then the huge rush of the drop - I still felt fear, but it was different, it was exciting and energizing. The same cycle continued as the ride went on and on. Then I got off the ride and immediately craved something more exhilarating. Dave Ramsey has a term for the exact feeling I’m talking about, he uses to describe barefoot water skiing, it’s called The Glorious Dread. He also uses that term to describe Entrepreneurship. Powerful, huh?
I can proudly say that my fear of rollercoasters finally ended a few months ago (as a 31-year-old woman) on my last trip to Disney World. I saw my three-and-a-half-year-old loving the thrill of the rides, I mean LOVING. (She rode the ‘Tower of Terror’ three times, for heaven’s sake.) On that trip, something just clicked for me. My mental pep talk went exactly like this:
“Heather, what the hell are you afraid of?? Look at the serious risks you take EVERY SINGLE DAY, and you’re letting a rollercoaster own you?? Okay, you’re doing this.” So, I did it. I rode my nemesis, ‘Expedition Everest’....and LOVED IT. The intensity of emotion was still there, but instead of fear it was excitement. Someone once told me, the only difference between fear and excitement is breath. It was probably some hippy yogi, but they were totally right. Why all of this rollercoaster talk, you ask? Because that IS starting and running a business - The Glorious Dread. It’s terrifying and thrilling and it’s that same cycle month after month or sometimes even day after day. You’re being vulnerable and brave enough to take the risk of putting yourself and your work out there for the
By Heather Suchma
rest of the world to love and buy into... or to totally reject. And the scariest part is, there’s money involved. For us it’s millions of dollars on the line, but I can tell you the dollar amount doesn’t intensify or lessen the fear and weight, it’s all the same. Here’s some of the best entrepreneurship advice I can share: 1. A lot of people use “research” as a viable procrastination crutch. The best way to learn is to do. 2. If you’re not at least a little embarrassed by the first work you create, you’ve waited too long. 3. You and your business aren’t meant to serve everyone. If you bend and sway with every opinion, you’ll be lost at sea with a product that is meant for everyone but serves no one. 4. “Marry your mission, date your plan.” It means the driving force behind your business - the why, never changes, what changes are the ways you’ll do it. 5. Partnerships are messy and hard and I don’t recommend them. That being said, we have the BEST partners in the entire world. I’m honored that they want to be a part of what we do and they’re honored to be a part of it. 6. It’s lonely. I know, so cliché, but it’s true. Not everyone will understand your journey and they’re not meant to. Surround yourself with people who challenge you. Don’t stress over not being able to connect with old friends and family the way you used to - you’re not who you used to be. 7. Just freaking do it. xo - Lady Heather Wife, Mom & Entrepeneur

Farmers Market at the Old Imperial Sugar Factory
alking into the Farmers’ Market at Imperial feels like a dream for foodies, explorers, and people alike. If you like to try new things while also being comforted in the fact that what you’re trying has been enjoyed and approved by people before you, this market experience is a dream come true. Located in the lot next to the Imperial Sugar Company’s building, this farmers’ market is easy to find and easy to access. With ample parking space, finding a spot is a breeze as long as you get there early. The majority of vendors can be found under a tin roof that protects from rain or sun while still allowing the fresh air to waft the smells of fresh produce, and fresh baked goods, sweets and breads to make them impossible to ignore. With an amazing range of cuisines featured, there is something for everyone. From one booth and vendor to the next, you may be able to find everything from Indian, Italian, South American, and of course, our own Southern Cuisines. Even your canine

friends are welcome and often have booths dedicated purely to them with healthy and natural goodies and treats for their enjoyment. Some of the vendors are on a rotating schedule so visitors can try different products and goodies each time they attend. However, you can still keep track of the vendors and see when they will be featured at the market again by visiting the market’s website (imperialfarmersmarket.com). These farmers, bakers, cooks and curators love what they do. That fact is clear and apparent in each and every one of their faces. They will politely offer what they are selling, and their knowledge and accomplishments, without pushing or forcing their product on the market visitors. Every single vendor I encountered at this farmers’ market is clearly passionate about what they can bring to your table. They are each ready and willing to offer people a nice experience. All while throwing in that personality and confidence, one only exudes when they know and love what they do.
With free samples offered with an easygoing attitude, you (and your stomach) will feel a need to try everything without feeling obligated to do so. As you find yourself browsing and walking through the booths found around the outside perimeter of the roof, you may find more, non-food related items. All sorts of crafts and goodies like handmade candles, hand carved wood trimmings, natural soaps, knitted pieces and more, each one being a great option for a gift or just to keep for yourself. So, if you are looking for something fun and family friendly to do on Saturday mornings, try the farmers’ market next Saturday. A place in which you can find some organic produce and healthy treats or just roam around and enjoy live music and activities for kids. The market stands year-round and opens every Saturday 9a.m.-1p.m. Go ahead and try all the yummy treats. Calories don’t count as much when things are made with wholesome ingredients, right? June 2017

After the accident she had some difficulty, but she was careful and adjusted her lifestyle to accommodate the injury. In 2001 that disc ruptured and the two discs above those were herniated. It took two surgeries and six weeks of physical therapy to begin the recovery process. She had some residual pain and a few physical restrictions, but for the most part, everything seemed okay until last summer when the pain in Kathy's neck began to escalate. By October, the pain was so bad she couldn't lift her arm to write on the chalkboard or turn her head. She even had a hard time looking down to grade papers. Kathy has been teaching biology, chemistry and physics for almost 14 years for Schola Home School Classes at Providence Presbyterian Church. She says, "I was raised by medical people. My father was a doctor and my mom was a registered nurse. We were not a family to seek chiropractic care. We believed in science and traditional medicine. However, during my recent flare up I was exhausted, in pain and I did not want to have another back surgery. My husband met Dr. Steve Harris at a Rotary meeting and suggested I schedule a consultation with Dr. Harris." "I felt at home the minute I entered Sugar Health Center. I inter viewed Dr. Harris, asking him all kinds of questions. I wanted a reason not to go anywhere else, but I had to be sure. Dr. Harris patiently answered all of my questions and said he would review my x-rays and come up with a personalized plan. Dr. Harris was so kind, so helpful and knowledgeable. He did not talk down to me, he acknowledged my knowledge. I went home and shared the information with my husband Barry. We prayed about our decision and decided that Dr. Harris was the right doctor for me. I have seen dramatic results since I started my treatments with Dr. Harris. I am back to an almost normal quality of life." Dr. Harris offers chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal decompression, and rehabilitation. He is well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philan thropist and humanitarian. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and recently celebrated
