ou know that terrible feeling when your foot “goes to sleep?” Now imagine having your entire leg go numb...for years. That’s what Tom Matthews, a local sales representative for Microsoft, experienced as a result of a herniated disk. He says, “A few years ago after I had finished a marathon, I started having persistent back problems and pain that resulted in complete numbness down my left leg. An MRI revealed that I had a herniated, bulging disk protruding from my spine...the kind of problem that usually requires surgery. I’m really uncomfortable with the idea of surgery, so I started doing my research...and I learned that decompression would probably be the most effective non-surgical option for me. I visited several chiropractors in the Sugar Land area, looking for the right one for me.” “When I realized that Dr. Steve Harris and I attend the same church, I called him for an appointment and showed him my MRI. Dr. Harris didn’t make any promises about how long the process would take or how effective it would be in my case. He offered me spinal disk decompression (at a price much lower than the other chiropractors I had considered), chiropractic adjustments, and laser treatment.” Dr. Harris may use Triton DTS decompression tables to relieve the pressure on your spine. In fact, he’s even taught courses to help other chiropractors use these tables in the best way to relieve a patient’s pain. Dr. Harris also practices soft tissue techniques (used by only 150 people anywhere in the world) and uses an oscillator
and a laser to restore circulation, break down scar tissue, and improve range of movement. These varied, advanced techniques made a difference for Tom. He says, “Throughout my experience Dr. Harris was very honest and approachable. I highly recommend him! My response to treatment was slower and took longer and Dr. Harris considered stopping it, but I said, ‘Don’t give up on me. I don’t want spinal surgery.’ Dr. Harris listened and in just three more weeks, I turned the corner with rapid and full recovery. Three months later, I lost 25 pounds and discovered that I had adult onset diabetes. So that was the complicating factor for slow recovery. Also, I had another MRI and the herniated disc had gone back in place. The radiologist said he had never seen that before. Amazing! That’s concrete proof that Dr. Harris and his chiropractic care can be an effective alternative to surgery! If you have a tough, complicated spinal condition, see Dr. Harris. He’s the real deal...and he saved me from surgery!”

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful Concert
his upcoming Labor Day, a lot of folks will be taking a much-needed rest from work to spend time with family and friends. There are a ton of events going on to celebrate the hardworking people of this great country and to say farewell to the summer. While there are major concerts at Toyota Center and beach parties in Galveston, you don’t need to drive that far (and get stuck in Labor Day weekend traffic) in order to hear some tunes and enjoy the outdoors.
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, a local nonprofit organization, will be hosting a concert at the Sugar Land Town Square plaza on September 2. The live music event will feature 33 1/3 RPM, a very talented and entertaining band who plan to perform a variety of familyfriendly hits for the crowd. If you’ve never seen 33 1/3 RPM live before, you will be in for a treat. They play a variety

of genres, from Motown and classic rock to pop. Their infectious energy and great song selection will have people from all age groups dancing their tails off at the plaza.
More importantly, the Giving Spirits concert will benefit Keep Sugar Land Beautiful’s environment-conscious initiatives. The local grassroots organization has been a tireless advocate for keeping Sugar Land pollution-free for many years. They educate citizens, especially the youth, on the importance of recycling and taking care of our surroundings in general.
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful offers a multitude of programs that are integral to preserving the city’s beauty. For instance, the Texas Stream Team

If you have teens, you can encourage them to volunteer for the Storm Drain Marker Installation Program during the weekends, which is another initiative started by Keep Sugar Land Beautiful in cooperation with the City of Sugar Land. In this program, volunteers place markers on storm drains and hand out flyers to homeowners which inform them on how they can help keep the city’s drainage system free of trash.
The September 2 concert at Town Square will ensure that important programs like these—along with the Adopt-A-Spot and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful’s educator workshops—will keep going for many more years to come.

6 Back-to-School Tips for Parents
ummer is coming to an end and the start of a brand new school year will soon be coming around the corner. This not only cues the transition from summer to spring, but also marks the shift from a fun, carefree vacation mentality to a sharp scholarly mind. As a parent, it’s your duty as the household general to get your young troopers back into shape for the upcoming academic year. Here are 6 tips that will help you prepare your kids and yourself as well. 1. School Time: In the summer, your kids got used to a freewheeling lifestyle that didn’t abide by any schedule. They stayed up and cruised the web or played video games until their eyes were red. So it’s important to instill discipline in your kids’ sleeping habits to get ready for “school time.” It’s recommend you get them on the school time sleep schedule about two weeks before the first day of class. Remember to enforce the sleep schedule or else they won’t be able to kick the bad habit of staying up late. 2. Scholar Mode: Who knows what kids
by Michael Miraflores
are doing in the summer. They have mysterious ways, but I’m guessing they’re not solving algebraic equations or analyzing Shakespeare plays. So to get their brain back into scholar mode, you can take them to the local museums. The world-famous Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is free every Thursday. For the science lover in your family, the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land is just a short drive away. This will help children and teens fire up their inquisitive minds. 3. Read More: Reading is a fundamental skill that not only boosts literacy, but critical thinking as well. Take your kids to the local library or bookstore, and let them pick out some books by their favorite authors. Instilling the habit of reading will prepare students for the academic year, particularly in their English courses. 4. Use Productive Apps: Back then, all we had was a pencil, notebook and a basic calculator. Today, we have smartphones making us smarter but also lazier. Having said that, there are a lot of free mobile apps that will help
students be more productive. Some apps like iHomework can keep your kids’ assignments and school projects organized. However, make sure they don’t become too dependent on these apps. Teach them that their brain is smarter than any smartphone. 5. Work Spaces: A cluttered room reflects a cluttered mind. There are a lot of things in a teen’s bedroom that can easily distract them, so set up an area in your home especially for doing homework. As with adult work spaces, students need an “office” where they can get things done without interruption. 6. Be a Good Role Model: The most influential people in your kids’ life is you. They pick up on your good and bad habits at home. So set a good example for them when it comes to doing their homework. You can synchronize your work with theirs. Set up your own work space at home, or even share the same room with them, for both of you to do your work. This way they’ll see that even adults have “homework” and how important it is to have discipline.
