Protecting Yourself from Break-Ins

issouri City is a quiet, peaceful community tucked between the suburbs and the countryside. For the past decade, the area has been a prized location for homeowners and businesses alike. In terms of crime, our community has always held a reputation for being a very safe place to raise a family, with extremely few violent incidents, which consists mostly of sporadic domestic violence cases. However, this suburb has seen an increase in property crimes over the last few years, especially auto and home theft. In particular, homeowners have recently experienced a series of break-ins which left residents of the enclave shocked and worried. Although curbing burglary is ultimately in the hands of police and lawmakers, residents can use extra precautions to prevent break-ins.

By Michael Miraflores

Here are some tips on how to make sure you don’t become a victim of property theft or home invasion robberies. 1. Install Security Cameras You can easily buy wireless CCTV (closed-circuit television) systems online or at any electronics store. There are many companies, including AT&T and Comcast, that offer package deals on home security. You can even link the surveillance camera feed to your smartphone through the manufacturer’s app, which most systems come with. Although it cannot physically prevent a trespasser, it can dissuade them if they spot the all-seeing eye of a camera lens. It can also be of great help to investigators if you are burglarized, because they will have visual footage of the perpetrators. 2. Get a Dog

Dogs are man’s best friend for many reasons, one of which is that they act as guardians. These tough sentinels will not only make criminals have second thoughts about targeting your house, but your canine friends will alert you of any intruders on your property. It’s suggested you choose a breed that is prone to barking and can be easily trained. This way, your dogs will know when and how to channel their aggression towards unwelcomed guests and not the mailman. Personally, I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback that I trained to take down attackers and a Doberman Pinscher out in my backyard, because they can cover a lot of ground with their lightning speed. However, you don’t need to have aggressive breeds or hunting dogs to defend your turf. Even a small French Poodle or Chihuahua will get the job done with their incessant highpitched barking.

Continued ~3. Use Home Alarm Systems This is the most common home theft prevention system. The most popular company is ADT, which has dominated the home security industry for many decades and are trusted. However, there are other companies to choose from that can give you customizable options. A home alarm system will not only protect your home when you’re away on vacation, but also act as a panic button when your house has been breached. 4. Turn on Your Lights It’s as simple as flicking on your porch or driveway’s light switch. Don’t worry about racking up electricity bills, because a single or even two lightbulbs will hardly put a dent in your pocket. An unlit home is an invitation for prospective burglars because you are giving them what they love the most: the cover of darkness. Think about it. If you were a thief, which house would you choose to burglarize? The one with the illuminated exterior or the one that’s so dark that neighbors and patrol cars wouldn’t even give it a second glance? Don’t just turn on your lights outside, always have a light turned on inside as well, like a desk lamp near the front windows. This will give the illusion that someone in the house is awake. 5. Gates and Greenery

If you want to really lock down your castle like Fort Knox, then you might want to invest in a front door and/ or driveway gate. There are many companies in the area that specialize in providing custom residential gates regardless of your house’s layout. Another thing you can do is to plant thick and abrasive bushes, such as Siamese Rough Bush, in front of your first-floor windows. This will create a kind of buffer zone. On the flip side, don’t put shrubs that grow wildly near your entrance, because waiting intruders can use these as hiding places to pounce out from when you arrive home and unlock your door.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Offering FREE FLU SHOTS to Benefit Santa’s Exchange

ith fall around the corner and the holiday season not far behind, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is once again offering Fort Bend residents the opportunity to “give a gift and beat the flu.” Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, in collaboration with the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Fort Bend Exchange Club, Rotary Club of Sugar Land, Rotary Club of Fort Bend and Toys for Tots Fort Bend, is offering free flu shots on Saturday, October 22 to community members who participate in Santa’s Gift Exchange. Fort Bend and surrounding area residents can bring a new, unwrapped toy or clothing item to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital from 8 a.m. to noon in exchange for a free flu shot. The toys and clothing will benefit local children in the Fort Bend area. “We are proud to partner again with the local exchange and rotary clubs and Toys for Tots to provide this community offering,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “This is a great way for the community to stay healthy while also putting smiles on children’s faces during the holiday season.” In 2015, Santa’s Gift Exchange provided toys and clothing to more than 5,000 economically disadvantaged children in Fort Bend County. “Everyone’s assistance is needed to meet the challenge of providing toys for children who will not have toys this year without our help,” said Jenn Cole, co-chairman of Santa’s Exchange 2016. “We are looking forward to partnering with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for a seventh year. This is a great collaboration; get a flu shot and in return you are able to give back to the children in your community,” said Cole, a 14 year member of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land. “Our community is well known for its philanthropic values, so we encourage you to participate by dropping off toys or clothing even if you have already had

your flu shot,” Siebenaler said. If you would like to participate in this community event, please bring a new, unwrapped toy or clothing item to the Main Pavilion lobby of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital between 8:00 a.m. and noon on Saturday, October 22. For more information, please call 281.274.7910. The flu vaccine is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and B. Vaccination with the flu vaccine may not protect all people who receive the vaccine. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will be distributing a limited supply of the influenza vaccine to persons age 18 and over with no history of GuillainBarre Syndrome or rubber latex allergy. If you are pregnant, please visit your obstetrician-gynecologist or primary care physician to have your vaccine administered.

8. Read at least two good books, on my nightside table now… “Grief is the thing with feather” by Max Porter and “Beautiful Bombshell” by Christina Lawson 9. Pick an hour in your week and dedicate it to writing. Sit and sip tea and let your thoughts flow onto the page. Write about your children, how you feel about the world right now.. let your mind wander and write down where it leads you… 10. Pick an elderly person in your church or go to the nursing home and bring them someflowers. Try to set up a monthly “date” to visit and get to know them.

4. Keep looking at Christmas Vacation getaways and call your agent to get the best deals and get booked! 5. City of Champions

ugar Land is home to quite a handful of Olympians, both in the Summer and Winter games. Legendary figure skater, Tara Lipinski, once called the Houston suburb home, and inspired generations of kids to pursue their dreams at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center. In this summer’s Olympics, the Sugar Land was well-represented by Simone Manuel and Steven Lopez. The city honored the two gifted athletes for their hard work and achievements by presenting them with a celebration at Town Center. Simone Manuel made headlines for being the first African-American Olympian to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming as an individual. The 20-year old phenome also set an American and Olympic record. It’s just another day in the life of Simone Manuel, who won a total of four medals (two gold and two silver medals). Take a deep breath, because there’s more. Simone also holds three world records as part of the relay team and swims for Stanford University. At her age, Simone is poised for more greatness in the future. Outside of the pool, she has also become an inspiration for young African-American girls to try out the sport of swimming. Steven Lopez, the taekwondo hero of Sugar Land, unfortunately did not win any medals in this year’s Olympics.

By Michael Miraflores

The Kempner High School alum lost the bronze medal to Tunisia’s Oussama Oueslati. However, Steven can hold his head up high for representing the city and the country to the best of his abilities. The two-time gold medalist—who won in Sydney in 2000 and in Athens in 2004—has long been a local star, and has proven that coming up short does not make you any less of a champion. Another Houston area Olympic star is Simone Biles, who set the internet ablaze with her flawless performances, brilliant smile and infectious personality. Biles is arguably this year’s Olympic superhero not named Phelps or Bolt. The kid from Spring, Texas won 4 gold medals, one bronze, and a lot of hearts around the world, including a teen idol named Zac Efron. This year’s Summer Olympics showed us that our country becomes truly united when our tremendous athletes represent the red, white and blue. We may all come from different backgrounds, have different shades of skin, but what matters most in the end is the universality of hard work, dedication and passion. We are lucky that Sugar Land has athletes that illustrate these virtues and that they are passing them on to the next generation of our city’s future Olympians.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Chiropractic Care

Helps Chronic Headaches and

Migraines

M

y health problems brought me to a man who’s made a real difference in an important ministry,” says Gary Hill, Pastor of Administration at Sugar Creek Baptist Church. “When I was five years old, I was bouncing on my bed. I tried to do a flip, landed on my head, and spent two weeks in traction. Every since then I’ve suffered from headaches. Until my early twenties, I treated them with over-the-counter medication. Eventually they got so bad that I began taking prescription pain medication. I had two or three migraine-strength headaches per week and the medication didn’t fully control the pain. Each headache could last fourteen to twenty hours and was absolutely debilitating. I tried Botox, I saw a Nerve Specialist, but nothing helped.” “A couple of years ago I was at the National Day of Prayer in Sugar Land. Dr. Steve Harris stood up to pray on behalf of the business community. I saw in the printed program that he was a chiropractor...and a little voice told me to contact him. I really believe God put us together….not merely as a solution to my own pain, but for a higher purpose revealed later.” “At my first visit, Dr. Harris found places in my neck and spine that had deteriorated. I accepted Dr. Harris’ full recommendations, and before I was even halfway through I felt a difference! Now I’ve gone from two to three debilitating headaches per week to one easily-controlled headache every five to six weeks. When I feel it coming on, I take a pain pill and knock it right out. The medications I took for all those years only masked the real issues and barely held the pain at bay. Dr. Harris and his chiropractic techniques got to the root of the problem. Now I see him periodically for a tune-up.” “I’m so thankful the Lord tapped me on the shoulder and told me to go see

...and Changes Lives! Dr. Harris. Because of that impulse, phenomenal things have been happening through the prison ministry, the Heart of Texas Foundation. Through this foundation, a 4-year fully accredited Seminary has been established in the maximum security Darrington Prison in Rosharon, similar to a successful program in the Angola Prison in Louisiana. When Dr. Harris heard about the prison ministry, he dedicated his prayer, his time, and his resources to making a difference in the lives of others!” Changing lives through physical pain relief is at the core of the chiropractic profession, but Dr. Harris is just as passionate about changing spiritual lives. He took a tour of Angola and saw firsthand the moral rehabilitation that has brought about a dramatic reduction in violence at that facility. He says, “I and my fellow Sugar Land business owners and members of the Sugar Land Rotary Club returned convinced of the genuine changes made with these inmates. Miracles do happen, when people work to help others.” www.heartoftexasfoundation.org.
